Preparations
After getting the last piece of the wedding together - the venue - Dawn and Rohan celebrated with a bachelor's party for Rohan.
She used the same night to spend some time with Luna in the comfort of her private home while he was getting slightly drunk with his best friend and sim of honor, Theo, and his friend, coworker, and officiant, Tate.

We’ve been chatting for about half an hour when Eloise lowers her voice to a whisper. Until now she’s been confidently talking through the ups and downs of being a 19-year-old woman in a world she finds unsteady.
She’s annoyed that, on TikTok, the advertisements she gets are keyrings with rape alarms and “stabby kitties” (a cat-shaped metal keychain with pointed ears sharp enough to cause damage), feels that modern feminism sometimes goes a bit too far, but having grown up in the age of nudes, she doesn’t really trust men. Which is unsurprising considering the story she tells me next.
“So a boy I know was asking a girl at his school for nudes,” she says, quietly. “And then when she refused, he threatened to rape her.” The boy was 14 and had recently posted an Andrew Tate video to his Instagram page, which was Eloise’s first encounter with the online influencer.
“It said stuff like how women are your property and that it doesn’t matter if women say they’ve been sexually assaulted; if you’re with them that’s your right. I didn’t like it,” she adds.
Tate has made several appearances in the headlines this week. On Tuesday, a Romanian court rejected his appeal to ease the ban on him leaving the country as a legal case against him – in which he’s charged with human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women – continues. He denies all charges against him. The following day, Ipsos polling for King’s College London’s Policy Institute and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership found that one in five men aged 16-29 who have heard of Andrew Tate have a positive view of him.
Separately – or, arguably, perhaps not – another survey published in the same week underpinned a renewed focus on the attitudes and beliefs of Generation Z, this time from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The research asked just over 3,000 adults of varying ages – 50.6 per cent of whom were female – about their understanding of rape and serious sexual offences, and the law on consent, and drew troubling conclusions.
Overall, 74 per cent of people surveyed understood that it can still be rape if a victim doesn’t resist or fight back, but the number fell to just over half (53 per cent) of 18-24-year-olds who had the same understanding. Less than half of respondents from this age group recognised that victims might not report a sexual offence to police immediately, that being in a relationship or marriage doesn’t mean consent can be assumed, or that if a man has been drinking or taking drugs, he’s still responsible if he rapes someone. More than 70 per cent of over-65s recognised that even if no physical force is involved a person might not be free or able to consent to sex, compared to just 40 per cent of young people.
Previous generations have become used to hearing that rape myths and misconceptions continue to persist, but that’s precisely why this week’s grim trinity of headlines stings. “There tends to be a public assumption that things are generally always getting better,” says author and feminist campaigner Laura Bates. “Actually, views like these are incredibly widespread among young people.”
Bates regularly works with schools, talking to pupils who often tell her that “rape is a compliment”, that “it’s not rape if she likes it” or, “it’s your boyfriend, you have to have sex with him”.
She adds: “Attitude surveys have to be taken seriously because they are a real red flag that we’re going backwards – we’re seeing much more extreme and concerning misogynistic attitudes among the youngest generations than we are among the oldest. We have to face up to that and ask, why is that happening?”
Gen Z has never been neatly contained. Growing up as the first digital natives in the chokehold of crisis – climate, Covid, cost of living – has seen them praised for their social awareness, but disenfranchised and forgotten by politics. Their extremely online nature has given them unprecedented access to the world and other people – but, of course, that’s a double-edged sword.
“The internet has made everyone’s voices louder, but that means the most misogynistic people in the world are heard more too,” says Niya Clement-Hickson, a 26-year-old marketing designer from London. He says his generation has been “kind of ruined” by social media.
“You’d be surprised at just how many people around my age will argue that Andrew Tate is not as bad as he seems.”
When I spend an hour talking to 16-year-old Tate fan Manus from Ohio on TikTok, he says exactly that. He’s relatively timid and seems unsure of what he thinks at times, but came across Tate aged 12, being drawn to his motivational speeches, humour, and attitude towards making money. “[Tate] kinda showed me how people really are in reality,” he says. On Tate’s assertions that women are the property of men, he says those beliefs are simply from the Bible (though Manus himself is Muslim).
He maintains he’s never seen Tate speak violently about women, and when I send him leaked voicenote recordings of Tate saying that he enjoyed raping a woman, Manus is certain it’s fake “probably to make him look bad”. I ask for his views on feminism and he responds that feminists now want “superiority” and “more rights”. What rights exactly? “More rights in general,” he says, vaguely.
This opinion is not a rarity – there’s a pervasive idea circling comments sections and pub corners that the pendulum has “swung too far”. “Some of us warned that when you continue to suppress their identity by telling young boys that they are inherently toxic, they’ll start acting irrational,” one comment under an Andrew Tate post this week read. But it’s not just boys who hold this idea. Early last year, a survey from Ipsos UK and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London echoed this and some of Eloise’s views that feminism has gone too far. They found that 52 per cent of Gen Z and 53 per cent of millennials believe that we’re now discriminating against men. Less than half of Gen Z respondents said they defined themselves as a feminist.
Was it coincidence then, to see that shortly after the research was published in March 2023, the year of the girl was in full swing? A persistently pink summer was punctuated with girl dinners, #tradwives – modern women who believe in traditional gender roles – and stay-at-home girlfriends sharing their daily rituals on news feeds. New York magazine’s The Cut declared it “Woman in Retrograde” as the year came to a close; a cluster of reactionary elements to a significant demise of mainstream feminism.
This shift back to traditional behaviours is also present in younger men, says Niya. “A lot of guys feel that their role is all about providing money, being a protector. But they feel they deserve to get something out of the interaction. They just can’t deal with being told no.”
In terms of consent, does he hear attitudes that put women in danger? “Absolutely,” he replies. Niya didn’t learn about consent in school – “I don’t think it was ever talked about beyond ‘don’t have sex until you’re old enough’” – and thinks this is quite common for men of his age. For Maya, who’s 24 and neurodivergent, the line of consent is difficult to pinpoint and somewhat shaped by social media. There’s a “disconnect” from what she really wants – and is able to articulate – in the moment.
“I think that we do have less and less sex and more and more porn,” Niya adds. “And I think that once porn is your main and in some cases, only engagement with sex and women, then that is going to completely screw up how you see sex.”
Do all roads lead to porn? Probably. Clare McGlynn, who is a professor of law with particular expertise in sexual violence and online abuse, says: “We know that algorithms promote more extreme content, more hate – and many, many younger people, men and women, are getting this. Millions of people, as we speak, are watching mainstream online pornography that is racist, sexist, misogynist and violent in its content. Of course, it’s shaping attitudes and lives.”
“There’s certainly a pressure on young boys and men, for example, to be taking and sharing nudes – they’re part of a culture that is encouraging them to,” McGlynn explains. During a study, she looked at what material was presented on the homepage of popular sites – she found landing pages which were filled with sexually violent material. “So it’s also not them even actively choosing that material; we’re part of a culture that is grooming young men, teaching them expectations around sex – and asking them to accept and normalise it.”
What appears clear from the survey conducted by the CPS is a dangerous lack of understanding of what constitutes a crime. “I do lectures on criminal law and I’ve had students come up to me afterwards and say that they didn’t know they had been sexually assaulted or raped,” McGlynn adds.
Laura Bates says that we’re in the midst of a “crisis of sexual violence among young people”.
“Deeply misogynistic misinformation is being spread to young people online at a rate that most people just have absolutely no idea about,” she says. “And there is a massive knock-on effect.
“Some will look at these surveys and go, well, what does attitude matter? But you have to draw a connection between these really worrying attitudes about rape and the fact that nearly 80 per cent of young people told Ofsted inspectors recently that sexual assault is normal and common in their friendship groups.”
So what can be done? More responsibility and accountability from social media companies, says Bates. Tate’s content – some of which reportedly shows him attempting to beat a woman with a belt; she later hides behind a locked door – has been viewed more than 11 billion times on TikTok, she says, adding: “That’s more than the population of the planet.” Last year, advocacy group HOPE found that more 16-17-year-old boys had watched Tate’s content than had heard of Rishi Sunak. “I think it’s really important that the government supports high quality, age-appropriate sex and relationships education,” she adds.
Actively listening to and engaging with boys – as seen in initiatives like the state of New York’s Starting the Conversation campaign – is also important. Boys must have a safe and judgement-free environment to express themselves: the more their experiences of rape culture are internalised, the more difficult they are to see.
The Online Safety Bill, which was enacted in October last year, she says, was a missed opportunity for change. While it asks for more transparency on social media platforms and imposes sanctions for those not following the act, along with criminalising cyberflashing and sending unsolicited nude images, “it went 250 pages without mentioning women and girls once, until campaigners changed that”, Bates says.
“It’s so much more effective to focus on prevention of radicalisation than trying to unpick it once it’s happened,” she says. “Young people really are prepared to listen and prepared to change their minds, it’s just a shame this isn’t happening in every school.”
“It does make me worried about how safe the world is going to be,” says Eloise, who will begin her twenties in the summer. “What if people really start thinking that women are property again?” Then, she’s quiet again. “I really hope it can change.”

Tate Legacy - Short Life Span Legacy
I've been heavily invested in gen 2 for a while now, but here I am officially handing over the baton - marking off gen 1's greatest achievements, and outlining gen 2 'goals'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am randomising everything for this save, using simsrandom.com and rolling dice, spinning a wheel etc. For this save I'm not so interested in completing goals, more living in the general spirit of the character.
Love that Brielle has 'inherited' a love for animals and the evil trait from her mother - given that she's so sugar sweet, the evil trait is a difficult one to imagine for her, so I'm saying that she works hard to keep it at bay, I'll be cancelling any evil interactions asap, and once she develops another trait I'll delete it - two evil sims in a row is a bit much!
Tumblr media
Anyway, a farewell breakfast with the fam, and we are Sulani bound 🌴🏖️🩴

Before my father died, he read an autobiography by another Trinidadian man in his peer group about what life was like on the sugar cane estates. My dad lived in the labourer barracks on Golconda Estate with his grandparents when he was little, so he was very disparaging of this other man’s account and started noting down his own experiences out of spite  XD
We found a bunch of his notes after he passed, all in his draftsman’s block capitals (a little shaky in his 80s) and I’ve been very slowly going through them. Sometimes it’s hard to conceive of the change that my dad saw in his lifetime. The indentured East Indian workers arriving in the Caribbean seem so long ago to me, but he still saw the direct legacy of all that shit.
[ TRANSCRIPT ]
DUTIES:
1) The Gen. Manager (white English) was the head of the estate & reported to a head manager delegated by [to] owners (”Tate & Lyle”) of England.
2) The overseers also white were mostly bachelors sharing a multi-room bungalow. They dressed in [kakhi] short sleeved shirt, khaki short pants, khaki tall socks, boots & khaki cork hats & supervise all top personnel.
He used to talk about seeing those overseers ride up and down the estate roads on horses, in their cork hats, with whips. In another section of his notes he remarks that all the white English had servants, too.
“In 1937 Kielberg sold his Liverpool sugar refinery to Tate & Lyle and in return was invited to become a co-investor in the company’s new West Indies raw sugar venture.“ <--- this is all that the Tate & Lyle website has to say about its history of exploitation in the canefields. We were nothing more than the living machinery of its venture.

I plan on making an expansive version sometime in the future but here's a rough shot placement of how I rank the generations-
9- Gen 6. Pokemon is at its best when it goes for both story and gameplay as one complete package than two seperate things. X and Y doesn't push either one with pretty bland gameplay (with the exception of Super Training) and a bland to bad story (I cannot name a single thing about the rivals, the team is as bland as Gen 1 Rocket with nonsensical motivations without the Gen 1 excuse and the Champion exists). Aegislash is rad as hell though. Megas are a mixed bag- why does Mega Garchomp exist?
8- Gen 1. Obvious stuff: the glitches in gameplay, really slow pace, starting some of the worst practices in Pokemon like Mythicals, trade evolutions, version exclusives ect. Blue, Lance and Giovanni are interesting characters...outside the Gen 1 games. But the sprites are pretty cool...even if Machop still looks like a gingerbread man to me.
7- Gen 3. Yeah the starters are pretty damn good, they have nice dungeon puzzles and the introduction of abilities was great. But to be real- I can't name a single interesting thing about any of the characters aside from Norman being the ONE dad in Pokemon and Steven being kind of cool. I can't name a thing about Roxanne, Brawly, Watson, Flannery, Winona, Lisa/Tate, Wallace (even though he became a CHAMPION) or any of the Elite Four. I also really don't like Team Aqua and Magma for how shallow they are. Again, they're roughly equal to Gen 1 Team Rocket which could have been fine...if Gen 2 Rocket didn't prove GF was capable of making simple but effective villain teams. Flannery's White Herb Torkoal would have given the games some credit...if not for Juan's stupid ass Double Team-Rest-Chesto Berry Kingdra canceling it out through Evasion hacks.
6- Gen 2. This isn't a condemnation of Gen 2 rather than how old it is. It brought in the Dark and Steel types which have helped make great type matchups and interesting new Pokemon. It made Team Rocket actually pretty interesting since they help embolden the theme of 'times are changing' with them clinging to power and relevancy with Giovanni refusing to show to showcase how their time has come and gone. Lance reinforces this theme by taking over from Blue and Red before teaching Silver, who starts the trend of more dynamic rivals. The sprites are actually really good because it's right before RSE started having blurrier sprites with clear and colorful sprites. It's just other gens adapted what makes it good.
5- Gen 7. The original stuttery Gen, though Pokemon like Vikavolt being a bettle-railcannon, Incineroar being a heel wrestler, Mimikyu's...everything and Lycanroc being a good fast Rock type making some standout Pokemon. It also introduced regional variants with solid additions like Alolan Muk and Alolan Ninetails. It's UI is also a great integration of the region's colorful aesthetic with paint brush splashes. Hau, Lillie, Gladion, Guzma and Lusamine are real standout examples of more in depth Pokemon characters and I think Team Skull is a pretty fun team to feed into the innocent tropical feel of the region. The Totem Pokemon also make for more unique boss battles. The Ultra Beasts are insane from a conceptual and gameplay perspective. I also really love Zygarde's Complete form.
4- Gen 8. A real tossup between this and Gen 7. This is a lot cleaner in terms of visuals but trades off a lot of the color and mix of tropical relaxation/insanity with a clean and flat sports aesthetic that I think is less memorable. Cinderace has an amazing signature move animation but the other two's aren't very interesting in either design or moves. I really like Sir Fetch'd and Obstagoon as new evolutions alongside Orbettle and Toxitricity as great new additions but the clean and simple presentation does make it less memorable. The gyms are also less memorable though the likes of Nessa's design and Raihan's design AND battle are very memorable. Also Leon's battle is really cool...even as he has a nostalgia baiting Charizard. (and I STARTED the series with Charizard). And then we have Hop, the first rival to actually challenge N's spot as the best rival in the games. What really pushes it over the edge is Legends Arceus for being a pinnacle of gameplay, atmosphere and story integration in the series.
3- Gen 4. This might be a little biased considering my clearer memories of Sinnoh. I think with Platnium has one of the best experiences in the games with a well-paced story, great balanced gameplay with the physical and special split allowing for more diverse Pokemon. The starters take advantage of this with the likes of Inferape being a mixed attacker, Empoleon being a special Water/Steel type and Torterra being a physical Grass/Ground tank. We get a great backstory for the Pokemon world in the form of it's creation myth and I think the best Gym Leader rematches in the 2D games. It also helps that this Gen remakes the Gen 2 games, improving the Gen 2 games and gives them the advantage of the more refined Gen 4 sprites and animations and fixing it's leveling issues in Kanto.
... Never forget the issues with the DP's speed and locking several postgame hook resolutions (Shaymin, Darkrai and fucking ARCEUS) behind LIMITED TIME DISTRIBUTIONS.
2- Gen 9. To try and make this quick- the best cast of the games with Arven, Nemona being one of the best rival and Penny being the best friendly team leader alongside the great authority figure in Principal Clavell, memorable Gym Leaders like Larry, Iono, Katie and Rhyme and the sad story of the Professors and how they ended up. They also made the first Legendary Pokemon that's an actual character in Koraidon/Miraidon. The open world allows for more expression of Pokemon's personalities (like how Tauros charge at you to show their aggression, weak and timid Pokemon run from you, Slakoth and Slowpoke lines not reacting to your presence, friendly Pokemon like Hoppip floating towards you, Tyrogue eating berries ect. The updated model textures make the Pokemon look more like actual animals that exist which helps make them appear more like pets. And this is without going into the DLCs which contain either the second best or the best rival in the series in Kieran. However the performance does in fact have issues and there should be more puzzles like in the 2D games. Also if the Pecharunt event is limited time- I'm having words with the developers.
1- Gen 5. Probably the most unique generation since it was the last 2D Gen with sequel games rather than remakes or third versions. This aspect changes a lot since it basically doubles the story of the generation which helps with things like Cherran and Bianca's character arcs with Cherran's use of held items foreshadowing his intelligence and thus his capacity for teaching or Bianca's weaker team reflecting how ill-suited she is for battling to justify her becoming Juniper's assistant. The locations are stunning in their visuals due to the combination of 3D environments and 2D sprites. The Gym Leaders have some great standouts like the Straiton City brothers, Lenora, Elesa, Skyla and Drayton. We also have Team Plasma and how they tackle a concept that Pokemon has long since tiptoed around (Pokemon abuse) being led by their leader N, who stood uncontested as the best rival for a long time.
... It's not perfect. Many of the changes in the sequel are justified by Memory Link events that you can't get normally, the Legendaries are a bit too busy and N probably came in a little early since he's a very verbose and grand rival with big talks of ideals and truth...in the generation right BEFORE we got more in depth dialogue choices. Which kind of makes the writing deflate a bit. Still, probably the best generation we have.

THE PIERCE LEGACY: GENERATION 4/5
Eight years later, here we go again! For everyone that may be around but doesn't remember, or for anyone new who might hop on here, here's the basics of this legacy:
Each generation is focused around a new occult life state. Generation 1 was ghosts, generation 2 was imaginary friends, generation 3 was fairies, generation 4 was werewolves, and generation 5 will be witches. If I manage to stick with it, we'll move onto mermaids, then plantsims, vampires, and the last two gens were still up in the air. Each gen also has a colour, with yellow, green and orange being those of the three surviving generations.
We're going to start off pretty light story wise until the kids are at least children, to see if I can actually get back into it, but then we'll see.
All old posts are still linked on their navigation page, and the summary of the most recent generation's story is specifically here. (Bear in mind it was all written 8-10 years ago, so it's not all very well written and is outright clumsy in places, plus some posts were lost to the censors.)
More details below the cut. (Sorry, this got WAY TL;DR.)
The current family is as follows:
Maylu, Nat and Kain Pierce: Maylu was generation 3's heiress, and is the only non-occult sim left in this family. Nat was her childhood sweetheart, and Kain was another fairy they both met at university. What started as a drunken three-way became asking Kain to help them have kids became a polyamorous relationship.
Alfred and Avery Pierce: Generation 4's heir and spare. 'Twins', of a sort, in that they were born on the same day, even if they're actually half-brothers. Avery is blind in one eye and Alfred has stunted wing growth, both as a result of the same incident in their childhood.
Tessa Pierce (née O'Connell) and Ylva Pierce (née Tate): Generation's 4's spouses! Both werewolves that have rough pasts, as all the wolves do. Tessa and Alfred have been together since they were young teens, Ylva and Avery got together later in their teen years.
Ivory Nein-Russel and Adrian Nein-Russel: Unrelated to the Pierces themselves, but Ivory, Tessa and Ylva are practically sisters. With a little bit of an age gap, Adrian and Ivory fell in love last, but no less deeply, and last we saw they'd just gotten married.
Elanya Pierce, Felan Pierce and Calypso Nein-Russel: Heiress and spares (sort of) of generation 5! Elanya is a fairy, Felan and Calypso are werewolves. Calypso was adopted. They're a bit older than when we last saw them, being treated as more around 3-4 than 1-2.
Then, living elsewhere in town and only here for this picture, there's:
Ella Pierce and Faye Pierce: Spares from generation 4, Ella being Maylu's bio kid and Faye being Nat's, a turned-werewolf and a fairy respectively. Ella grew up a normal sim, but got Dexter to change her when they were teens because she was tired of being the only normal sim. This was more dangerous than expected.
Dexter Pierce (née Richwood) and Obsidian Pierce (née James): Spouses to Ella and Faye, respectively. Both werewolves, who like Adrian were also with the pack since they were kids. Dexter and Adrian have a bit of a rivalry, but they've been working on it.
Xavier Pierce and Cyril Pierce: Cousins to generation 5, Ella and Faye's kids respectively. Xavier is a werewolf and Cyril is a fairy.
I have all sorts of weird random bits of personalised occult lore for this family, but the relevant bits are:
There are very rare instances of occult hunters, and there is, technically, still one out there on the trail of the wolves in this family.
Fairies all start with the tiny little wings that then grow into one of the bigger shapes when they get older. Alfred's were stunted by emotional trauma and never grew.
Fairies can develop something called an adeptnature, which is a talent for a very specific branch of their nature magic. Alfred has one for befriending small animals, Avery has one that lets him sense the weather.
Fairies can have a variety of face markings, like Nat's 'eyeshadow' or the speckles on Alfred and such, that almost always skip a generation.
There are three kinds of werewolves: born wolves, moonborn wolves, and turned-wolves. Tessa, Ylva and Ivory are each of those respectively.
Cottonwood Hills, the town I play in, is a generally very welcoming town for occults but does not believe weresims exist. Maylu is working on proving it so the weres in the family can be open about what they are without issue.
Normal sims cannot learn alchemy. (Obviously they actually can mechanically, but lore wise.)

🐍 Draconis Family | Generation 1
I’m starting the #TS4AscendantLegacy challenge by @spacesuitsims. 💫 It’s an incredibly detailed astrology-based legacy which I am really excited to explore! Full rules can be found here.
*I will include rules & requirements for each generation at the bottom of the post.*
We begin with my Gen 1 Taurus Rising sim, Evangeline Draconis, as a teenager living at her family’s mansion in Willow Creek. The Draconis line comes from old money and is rich beyond all reason, which is where her love for luxury is born. 💸

Draconis family mansion in Willow Creek
💞 Gonzalo and Selina Draconis are proud parents to one dog, Ryder, and six children: young adult Kellan, teen Evangeline & her twin Ciaran, twin children Sawyer and Arcturus, and infant Tate.
Those two certainly got their wish for a large family and are always extremely busy between raising the kids, working full time (Gonzalo is in business & Selina is in law), leading the Game Makers club for the wealthy and elite, and being there for each other. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Luckily, a full-time butler has always lived onsite to help manage the household.

🏙️ Kellan just moved into his first apartment in San Myshuno, where he’s focusing on his music and becoming fast friends with his neighbors, who are all of a similar age.
Evangeline and Ciaran both excel in school and are learning to balance their education alongside their new jobs — Evie works in retail and Ciaran is a lifeguard. 🛟 The twins are extremely close and love to cause mischief, both at school and sometimes at home due to their love of mary jane. 💨
Meanwhile, Evie’s relationship with close childhood friend Max Villareal has begun to blossom into something more…

📜 Gen 1 Rules & Requirements
Taurus Rising ♉️
Taurus is a fixed earth sign, finding comfort in the home and in the material world. Often having a taste for luxury, this Venus ruled sign loves to pamper themselves and enjoy the good things in life. Taurus can be stubborn, grounded in their beliefs and values and uncompromised when in comes to change as they feel they must control all aspects of their lives to be fulfilled. Taurus must learn that accepting a genuine helping hand and guidance will help, not hurt them.
Traits: Lazy, Foodie // Aspiration: Master Mixologist
Career: Choose (Retail)
Modality: Fixed Earth // Planetary Ruler: Venus
Complete an aspiration in the creativity category (Child: Creative Genius)
Overindulge in an area of life (juice, parties, romantic partners, gossip)
Course correct after making two friends/romances into negative relationships (over -65 red) and rebuild the friendships back to good friends, swearing off the bad behavior and finding balance
Gen 1 - 1st House: House of Identity 🧘🏻‍♀️
The first house is the house of self, it represents the native (aka the person) - their personality and physical body, their interests and view on life, etc. The first house focuses on the individual, unlike many other areas of the birth chart. The Ascendant is always in the first house and their positioning sets up the rest of the chart - much like your founder sets up your legacy family. Explore, grow, and create a legacy of your own. The goal of this Gen is to find your sim’s identity.
Complete the Renaissance Sim aspiration
Play with 3 difficult lot challenges at all times (I’m applying this rule when Evie becomes a YA)

Dear Yuletide Writer 2023
Dear Yuletide Author,
First of all, thank you so much for writing a story for me. I really love Yuletide. I love writing stories for people; I love reading stories written for other people in fandoms I didn’t know enough about to properly request; and I love waking up on Christmas morning with a story written just for me waiting. It’s magical. I have loved every story that was written for me, and I am sure I will love whatever you write.
Things I love, in general: witty dialogue. Fic that gets the voices right. Everyday moments that mean more than they seem to on the surface. Enemies-to-friends or enemies-to-lovers. Female friendships. I like crossovers and AUs.
Things I’m not wild about, in general: Female characters being catty for no reason other than "girls are just awful." Mpreg stories are also a really hard sell for me. (Not completely out of the question, just a hard sell.) Rape, torture, dismemberment are generally not what I’m looking for in a Yuletide story. I really don’t like stories about moms dying. I prefer gen to smut. (If you do want to write smut, please nothing smutty about high schoolers although fic where they’ve grown up a bit is OK and anything PG-13 is fine.)
Specifics for the fandoms (and all optional details are optional; as a Yuletide writer, I love getting fairly specific requests for prompts, but don’t feel like you have to stick with mine):
1. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (character requested: Calpurnia Tate)
I want what I think everyone wants on reading The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate and The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate: I want Calpurnia to go to college. (A real college, where she could study science.) I’d love a story about that – Calpurnia fighting to go, going, being there, graduating, any element of it. Any historically plausible college -- Or, if you’d prefer, any story where she takes an important step toward getting a real education will make me happy. Or any story where she does science with her Grandfather, because those are my favorite parts of the books. Or you could use any item on that bucket list she writes at the end of the first book as a prompt. I would prefer not to get a story where Calpurnia’s grandfather dies in the story. If he’s died before the story starts (even quite recently) that’s OK. One of the things I really appreciate about these books is that Calpurnia never surrenders to the demands of femininity. She learns to cook and knit and do various other mandatory tasks because her mother forces her, but never says to herself, “oh, this isn’t so bad,” and the book never presents “becoming a LADY” as the inevitable response to maturity.
I love all the side characters and their relationships with Calpurnia, so feel free to use your favorites or make up some OCs for her to hang out with in college or whatever.
2. Chalion series, Lois McMaster Bujold (characters requested: Tanar Xarre and Surakos Bosha)
I love Tanar and Bosha -- their complicated, intimate, not-exactly-romantic, not-exactly-not-romantic relationship -- and would love to see more of it, within canon or not. Some possibilities:
* Tanar does, as Bosha has suggested, run off and become a pirate queen. Or a bandit queen, a saint, a self-appointed ambassador to some country, anything cool and worthy of her.
* A story set when Tanar is younger, about some danger she gets into and how Bosha gets her out.
* A story in which Bosha is in danger and Tanar gets him out.
* A story about how Tanar, Adelis, and Bosha navigate Tanar and Adelis’s marriage.
* Curtainfic. (I mean, I have to figure that Bosha would spend the whole shopping trip waiting for someone to show up who he gets to has to kill.)
Please feel free to use any of the other characters from the series as well -- if you want to include Adelis, Penric, Nikys, Hekat, or anyone else, by all means feel free.
 3. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (character requested: worldbuilding)
I loved this movie -- it was delightful. I think a story that goes through part of the story from the perspective of the people playing this RPG would be really interesting. (Was Forge previously a PC? Did he drop out of the gaming group and move away? Did the GM make him a villain because they were mad at the player, or did the player say, "feel free to have me come back as a villain, that would be GREAT!") I would particularly like it if any of the characters are being played by someone of a different gender from the character (or someone who initially thought they were playing a different gender, then realized they weren't), if Kira is someone's actual kid who gets to pop in and role-play until bedtime, if someone is playing TTRPGs for the very first time…
4. The Saint of Steel series (characters requested: Zale, Worldbuilding -- either/or)
I love Zale so much. SO much. I also just love the whole concept of the Temple of the White Rat. I would be happy with anything related to either Zale or the Temple of the White Rat. I realize "I love all this stuff so much" is not much of a prompt, so here are some ideas:
Zale has to handle some profoundly petty legal problem (along the lines of someone demanding a small personal item back from a former roommate) that escalates.
The Temple gets wind of one of the other swords (like from Swordheart), and sends Zale out to handle it.
Zale has to handle a child custody dispute.
Something in which the Temple of the White Rat exists in some version of the modern world.
A story in which the White Rat called a paladin and decided they were a lot of trouble and the Rat could stick with lawyers henceforth.
A story about how the White Rat calls devotees (does the Rat call people? Or do people just find their way to the Temple and get adopted?)
Seriously, anything sounds great. I also love all the other characters: feel free to include as many as you want (or to invent OCs).
Thank you, and happy Yuletide!
