note: imagined an actual child!reader. ive never written or read something like this so this was a fun experiment! the ask is really fun to imagine though, i hope i did it justice!!

The Astral Express Crew are visiting Belobog after helping the stellaron crisis but this time, it's purely for a vacation. you weren't allowed to go last time and it really bummed you out so you're real excited about going!!

first stop is visiting Bronya and Seele in the Supreme Guardian's office. Dan Heng and MC are at the bottom of the shelf, arms out in an attempt to catch you in case you fall. thankfully, you get down fine. but Welt is grounding you, literally. you're banned from climbing on things for the rest of the trip.

the second stop is Serval's workshop. Himeko is talking to Serval about the machines and all that while March is showing Welt how the little connector puzzle works. you were listening to March before some of the tools caught your eye. suddenly, you're in the back of Serval's workshop playing with Serval's scrap pieces. MC is the first to notice you're gone, alerting Dan Heng and Welt. there's a sort of assumption you've gone far, so que a panicked Welt slamming the door of the workshop open trying to find you. you couldn't have gone far... or maybe you could? Welt's not sure how much to overestimate or underestimate your ability to go missing. 10 minutes later and Himeko finds you happily playing with bits and pieces of metal scraps and a pair of pliers in the back of the workshop.

the third stop is Boulder Town and god, the entire crew is swearing they're going to keep a close eye on you. Dan Heng stops you from climbing in the cart full of geomarrow and Welt is holding your hand almost all the time (although he doesn't notice that you pulled away a couple times, he's a little too focused hearing an explanation of geomarrows from some miners). but then you meet the moles. and you and Hook get along great! and now you want to play with the moles. and Hook is incredible at swaying people into things. you are now free to play with the moles!

Hook really did mean it when she promised that she'd keep an eye on you and that the moles wouldn't leave Boulder Town. she really did mean it! but you were practically begging Hook to take you to Rivet Town as she retold her adventures with MC to fetch Junjun. you only meant to take a peak, a quick one. but then a peak turned into showing you the street of the restaurant where Natasha took kids who were good, and then it turned to a few streets more, until it was a whole town tour. Hook couldn't help herself, you seemed so interested in her stories about the town!

back in Boulder Town, the Astral Express Crew is ready to move onto the last stop and theyre looking for you. March asks Julian who's hesitant to say but eventually fesses that Hook took you to take a peak of Rivet Town. the original Jarilo-IV Trailblaze Team is worried and there's a bit of initial confusion, Himeko and Welt thinking Hook simply took you to the next town over. and Dan Heng has to explain that Rivet Town is infested with fragmentum monsters. poor Julian is bombarded with question like whether or not you and Hook went alone, how long you've been gone, etc...

they do find you and Hook, eventually. it was about an hour long search. it just happened that you and Hook got tired and decided to rest in one spot for a while, who knows how long it’d take the crew to find you guys had you not stop exploring.

the fourth and final destination is the Robot Settlement! the entire crew understands that a LOT can go wrong at the settlement; so many crevices and corners you could run to, robots who may not recognize you aren't a threat or are malfunctioning. Dan Heng explained the crew's concerns to Svarog and Clara who quickly come up with a solution: Svarog isn't letting you out of his sight!

while Clara gives the crew a tour of the Robot Settlement, Svarog accompanied to watch you. he catches you nearly running away to get a closer look at a robot twice, four times for something shiny in the stone walls, and once for something on the ground. he couldnt quite figure out what made that part of the snow covered ground was so much more special than the rest for you, and neither could you, which is why it was so interesting.

Svarog is pretty reliable most the time, he practically raised Clara so everyone trusted him with you. maybe Clara was a lot more mellow as a child compared to you but this 'take care of a child' task difficulty increased by tenfold when it came to you. how Svarog managed to lose you is unknown; all he knew was one moment you were crawling all over him, asking him questions, then telling him you wanted to walk, and the next, you were gone.

if they were panicking before, they were having a full on break down now. Svarog lost you and now couldn't find you within his field of vision! with how reliable Svarog was made to sound, they feared the worst. maybe you fell down the cliff, what if a robot malfunctioned and fought you? Svarog tried calculating how far you could've gotten and how likely it was for you to be found but no one could quite decide on when they last saw you.

a wave of relief washes over them when they find you asking a robot questions. honestly, the entire crew feared you'd died or something, though no one wanted to say it. unaware of this feeling, you're caught off guard as March, Himeko, then the rest of the astral express crew rushed over to give you a tight hug. Himeko scolded you a bit for making the crew worry but she was more happy you were fine than anything.

the crew may find it stress inducing and troublesome when you disappear, but they wouldn't trade you for anything in the world!

The morning routine seldom deviated, whoever woke up first, got the shower first, while the others tended to breakfast, and took their turns pulling themselves together for work, or the day in general afterwards. Foxy stood out on the little fire escape balcony, refilling the couple of bird feeders Chica had hung out there for the day, as Freddy helped Chica with breakfast, Bonnie, surprisingly for once, had been the first awake, or, perhaps he’d never fully gone to sleep. It was at times difficult to tell. Conversation was light and lighthearted, as the early hours of the day passed them by with little to no fanfare, as it often did. The smell of pancakes and the heat of the stove infesting the main space of their home, All of it backdropped by the mostly mindless droll of the TV left on in the background. If they listened closely enough, they could catch the occasional sounds of their neighbor shuffling about in his own space beneath their floor; just as they could distantly hear the sounds of the candy shop on the ground floor being prepared to open for the day from the large window left open out onto the fire escape, at least, up until Foxy stepped back inside. Shutting the window behind him to better preserve the warmth of the apartment itself. Foxy idly shuffled across the floor and towards the coffee maker, the low hum of the machine and the scent of fresh coffee joining the mix of sensations around them in their cozy space as time passed them by both far too quickly and yet, at a snail's pace. Before they knew it, breakfast had been served, the shower had been occupied by each of them for the morning, and it was time again to take a walk back down the stairs, habitually glancing towards their neighbor’s door with the brief subconscious curiosity of if they’d catch sight of him again today as they passed. As they stepped off the last step, through the small hallway tucked away behind the candy shop, though disconnected from it to allow residents to get to and from their apartments long after the shop closed and locks its doors for the night, and out onto the sidewalk. As per usual, the windows of the shop sat with clear views of the vast myriad of both mass produced and handmade specialty sweets and candies inside, it was difficult not to want to stick around and buy more than a few of them anytime they walked past. Chica pulled the keys from her jacket pocket, where they’d been left since last night and placed them into Freddy’s hand. “It's your turn to drive today.” She stated, a small yawn tacked onto her voice as she tried to shake the last of the sleepiness from herself. Freddy nodded as he positioned the key to the car between his index finger and thumb and hurried past the candy shop before the temptation of it became too much and made them inevitably late for work with the amount of time they could get lost in the place, seeing what specials there were for the day, and chatting with the eccentric owner. Foxy grabbed Bonnie by the arm, having to forcibly drag him away from the shop windows as Freddy unlocked the car doors, the drive to the restaurant was relatively short, but being late wasn’t something Mr. Afton was quick to tolerate. Being there at least a few minutes early usually served as the best course of action to ensure the long shift ahead didn’t begin with being scolded in the dining room. In the daylight, the neon and brightly colored lights of the main street shopping district were extinguished, leaving little more than the window displays of each shop to try and draw in attention and customers in their stead, few did quite as good a job as the lights did. Old, near ancient seeming buildings, their tall windows near always dusty from their sheer age no matter how often they were cleaned, most, opted to simply place large printed signs over them rather than arrange a proper display of bits and trinkets. -CONTINUES ON NEXT POST- PREVIOUS FIRST NEXT

NEW AMSTERDAM REACTION

This reaction is for the season 5, fifth episode titled "Grabby Hands" which originally aired on October 18, 2022. The episode was written by Graham Norris and directed by Lisa Robinson. Spoilers ahead!

Since my last reaction got a bit longish, I'm going to keep this one as short and sweet as possible. I want to start off by saying I really liked this episode. With each episode we are getting in this final season, I'm reminded why I fell in love with this series in the first place. This week's episode is all about good intentions and how our desire to help those we care about can result in them getting hurt or worse. Let's start with Dr. Lauren Bloom.

Lauren moved in with her sister at the beginning of this season despite protests from her friends and colleagues. Lauren wants to reconnect with Vanessa (Kathryn Prescott). Both of them have endured immense amounts of trauma which has resulted in them both becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol. Thankfully, Lauren has been sober for two years and has somehow miraculously remained so while rooming with her sister who seems perpetually drunk and high. Lauren has been faking taking shots just so she can win her trust. While Lauren's desire to re-establish her relationship with Vanessa is pure, her approach is all wrong.

At the end of the episode, Vanessa finds Lauren's sobriety chip and flips out. I felt so bad for Lauren in this moment but I also understand why her sister is upset. It would feel super violating to have someone come into your home, cozy up to you, and lie to you daily. What Lauren's done for the past four episodes can be filed under the category of manipulation. Again, I get that she wants things between her sister to be like they were before both their worlds came crashing down, but Lauren also needs to realize that her sister is an addict and just as she made the decision to clean herself up, Vanessa will need to make a similar decision. Sorry, Lauren. I'm #TeamVanessa on this one. I do hope things between these two can work out in the future but a lot of healing needs to be done.

Next up is Dr. Floyd Reynolds. When three patients arrive in the emergency room exhibiting the signs of a rare poisoning. When Max and Lauren figure out that the three patients live in the same building, Floyd leaves New Amsterdam and makes his way over to the apartment building. What follows is a montage of Floyd interviewing the residents of the building and learning about all the things that are wrong. Apparently the place is laden with black mold, rats, spiders, and a host of other issues that made me think perhaps maybe the building should be condemned or burned to the ground.

Allow me to digress for a bit. I get why New York City is so appealing. Having visited there back when I was in high school, it was a nice change of pace from living in a smaller town in the south. I loved how much culture was there. On any given day, there's so much to do. Museums ... Broadway plays ... sports ... the best restaurants ... I get why people visit the place. What I don't understand is why anyone would want to live there. On top of the rent being sky-high, it seems like everything is so grimy and miserable. Hearing these characters talk about all the money they pay just to live in a rat-infested hell-hole made me so appreciative of my small town life.

Once again, we have another doctor at New Amsterdam with good intentions. For some reason that's not readily apparent, Floyd becomes invested in wanting to solve each of these residents' issues. He suggests that maybe they pay extra in rent so the owner can afford to fix their apartment up. Naturally the residents poo-poo this idea because they barely have the money to pay rent as is on top of paying medical bills. Just when things are starting to feel hopeless for Floyd, he comes up with an idea that would involve the residents paying more, only instead of them paying rent, they would be paying a mortgage. New Amsterdam would foot the bill by giving them a loan. I do find it funny that the whole narrative of New Amsterdam, since season one, has been how broke the place is yet they are able to give out substantial loans to random people in the neighborhood but I suppose I'll overlook this detail in favor of celebrating what seems like a win for Floyd. 

A part of me thinks that when it comes to his personal life, Floyd feels helpless. Every relationship he has never seems to work out which is why he is too scared to try something new with Gabrielle, the new nurse at the hospital. By the end of the episode, it seems like he may be open to trying something, even if it's temporary. Oh, another funny part of this episode was Floyd trying to figure out what her name is after she didn't tell him in the last episode. Him making guesses felt very Rumplestilskin to me. Up next is Dr. Iggy Frome. While Max, Lauren, and Elizabeth are holding things down at the hospital, Iggy takes four of his teenage psych patients out for a day in nature. As he tries to garner some enthusiasm out of them, he notices they are more preoccupied with their phones than with whatever he is talking about. He pulls over and demands they turn over their cellular devices and he hands his own phone in out of solidarity which is such a bad idea. 

Speaking of good intentions, Iggy is concerned the teens may be too focused on their technology instead of the world that's around them. This is a valid concern, especially from a behavioral health provider. However, rather than be reminded of the saying, everything in moderation, Iggy overcorrects and his actions result in the five of them getting lost in the woods. Well, you know what they say, when it rains, it pours. Literally. After huddling near a tree during a pop-up storm, Iggy and the teens build a fire in the middle of the woods. What's interesting is that no one seems too terribly upset with Iggy for getting them lost in the woods.

Perhaps the funniest part of the episode is when a notification goes off and everyone looks at one of the teens who assures them the sound they heard was a bird. The notification goes off again and finally the kid reveals that while he did turn in his phone, he kept his iPad which has both power and a signal. With iPad in hand, Iggy is able to lead the kids back to the van and back to civilization. Iggy, it seems, has learned a valuable lesson. His good intentions backfired on him and someone, including himself, could've gotten hurt in the process. One of the biggest complaints about Iggy is how impulsive he is, especially in his personal life. Often his actions result in those around him - his kids, his soon-to-be ex-husband, Martin - getting hurt. I hope we get to see him spend the rest of the season growing because as I've said before, Iggy Frome is my favorite character on the show. 

Last up is Dr. Max Goodwin. Last episode, he got some pretty unsettling news concerning his health, however, we don't really get to deal with that this episode. Instead, we start the episode off watching him and Luna making breakfast. Luna is little and wants to help out but Max is too focused on making sure she doesn't climb up on anything or make a mess. He wants to keep her safe but ultimately she still gets hurt when she picks up a knife and cuts her finger.

Max takes Luna to work with him and Auntie Lauren patches up her finger. I loved seeing Luna interact with Lauren because it's yet another reminder of how the doctors are each other's family. With Luna's problem temporarily fixed with a finger stitch (ha, that rhymes), Max has to deal with one of his nurses getting arrested after she accidentally administered a fatal dose of a drug that killed a patient. The nurse's arrest has a ripple effect around the hospital when other nurses start second-guessing their actions out of fear of making a mistake that could get them sued or worse. 

Max is at his wit's end. On one hand he understands why people would be concerned. Nurses are the first line of defense in healthcare and if a mistake is made, especially one that results in a patient getting hurt or worse, the blame is almost always shifted to them. Max understands why these men and women are concerned but he doesn't think that healthcare providers should prioritize themselves over their patients. While I get where Max is coming from, a part of me thought to myself during this episode that it's easier for Max to have this view because he's a doctor and it's nurses who are feeling the brunt of this.

For once, there are no easy solutions to this issue and it's quite refreshing to see Max not be able to charm his way out of this issue. This is a very real issue and I'm sure there are nurses who watched this particular storyline and felt seen and heard. Ultimately Max's solution is to keep fighting which doesn't really feel like a solution at all. Accidents will keep on happening because accidents happen and fingers will yet again be pointed at the nurse who was involved. It's just a fact of life. However, with that said, Max's non-solution felt very realistic. So much of what's wrong in healthcare and in society, in general, is unfixable. The way the system is configured makes it next to impossible to implement any positive change and I'm glad this show is finally acknowledging that. It's a bleak ending to this particular storyline but at least Max is able to fix things at home.

At the end of the episode, Max explains to Luna that he loves her and wants to protect her and always will want to protect her. He also tells her that he has to find a way to let her be more independent without letting his concerns get in the way. See, Max gets it! Balance is the key! At the end of the episode, Max finds a way for Luna to help out with making breakfast that gives her independence while in a safe environment. I love seeing Max and Luna together. I know it must be rough being a single parent. I just hope that whatever is going on with his health is curable because Luna has lost so much and I don't want her to lose Max.

As I said earlier, this was a great episode. Sure, some of the plots were a bit shaky and the resolutions were a bit questionable, but ultimately I was thoroughly entertained by this episode. What made this episode particularly enjoyable is getting to delve deeper into these characters we've grown to love. Each of our characters learned valuable lessons about good intentions this episode and a few of them got hurt in the process. I do think Lauren will be able to make peace with her sister, even if it means they don't have a relationship. I think Reynolds will finally find what he is looking for, which is someone to love and for the person to love him back. Iggy is finally starting to learn that simply having good intentions is not enough. He's hurt a lot of people, including himself, and it was nice to see him take some accountability for once. As for Max, he's learning that life isn't fair and that sometimes instead of fighting to win, you have to fight to maintain. I can't wait to see what happens next! Until next time ...

Fun fact about my au: the Afton and Emily families are pretty well off financially. The restaurant business makes a good amount of money. The company pitch got a lot of money from sponsors especially because the animatronics cost A LOT of money to make.

Not that you would know that from the way Michael lives. In his defense it was started by Ennard, but his house is an unkempt nightmare. He’s really only done a few things to fix the damage Ennard caused to the house and those were to clean up the blood and flesh parts left around the house and get rid of all the shit they used to cover up the smell of the dead body. The walls are covered in scratches, furniture is upturned and broken, the family picture on the living room wall is destroyed beyond recognition, and the house is covered in newspaper clippings, pictures, a ridiculous camera and TV set for making and playing back recordings, it almost looks like something cultish, but really Michael just doesn’t know that he has a life of his own anymore, and for all he knows, stopping his father’s cycle of violence is the only reason he’s worth anything.

Also, the basement is still covered in blood and full of makeshift torture instruments Ennard created. There are some vials in there containing remnant as well, and Michael has to use those to preserve his body to prevent further decay and even try to mend what’s decomposed already, but he hates that he’s allowing himself to gain any benefit from his father’s actions.

Part of the reason he uses it anyway is because when Michael and William infuse themselves with remnant, it makes them experience the memories of the deceased it came from. Michael repressed a lot of his traumatic memories and the emotional damage they caused him for years, and he doesn’t think he should forget again. Both as punishment and so that the victims’ memories can be preserved in some way.

(And that last part is why Vanny in my AU canonically gets nightmares and hallucinations of William’s victims. Glitchtrap is an entity created by the after-effect of William’s crimes and the trauma that remains in the wake of the ending. Spring Bonnie’s AI was imprinted with William’s remnant and as such, the memories of the victims whose souls he essentially harvested. As Glitchtrap, it pushes that onto Vanny when it implants into her brain, and she then suffers these memories of the children’s deaths in the form of hallucinating and having nightmares. A similar thing also happens to the animatronics infected by Glitchtrap, as it infests their code with the memories of killing the children through running a code that loops MP4 files of the children’s deaths. Those files are corrupted as a result of being Glitchtrap’s direct memories, and when the code is run that plays the videos, Glitchtrap can then infest the animatronic and execute the program that turns them into killers.

Furthermore, a similar thing happens when Glamrock Freddy is possessed. Michael’s memory of the aftermath of Cassidy’s death and desperately trying to save him uploads as an MP4 file that the system doesn’t know what to do with, causing the initial error that turns his eyes silver. Over time, Michael manages to take control of Freddy, fully overpowering the vessel and making it entirely his. The MP4 of Michael trying to save Cassidy after the bite ends up being deleted as that one memory stops being Michael’s focus and he instead moves forward to what he can do to stop his father, or whatever seems to be echoing him, now.)

The animatronics being infected with code that causes them to just continuously see an MP4 of the victim's deaths is an interesting concept, especially with GlamMike in your AU
