thinking about Carmen taking care of his girl sm he won’t put up with her spending any of her hard-earned money :(
After shutting your door for you, Carmen walks around the front of the car into the drivers seat, shuffling with the seatbelt as he turns the key in the ignition.
You hum to yourself in the meantime and find your lipstick in your bag—your new lipstick, a little more luxe this time, just the right shade to compliment your skin, a treat for yourself after finishing up a project at work. Just a little gift you deserved. You flip down the sun visor and open the mirror, making a pretty o with your lips to carefully apply it, stifling a smile when you feel Carmen watching.
“Where’s that from, baby?” he asks, a hand smoothing up your back.
“Hm?”
“The—the, uh—” he points to his own mouth while staring at your lips— “Lipstick, you call it?”
“Oh,” you smile. “Yeah, it’s new.” You hug his bicep, an affectionate squeeze before cradling the side of his face and toying with the tuft of hair by his ear. “You like it?”
He hums, “‘F course, ‘s pretty.”
But his smile falters, and it has you pouting.
“What?”
“Nothin’…” He shrugs. “Just don’t remember buyin’ it. You used my card, right?”
You shake your head. “No, I bought it myself. It wasn’t expensive, Carm, I promise.” Half true, at the very least.
“Yeah?” He let’s go of you only briefly to lift his hips and pull his wallet from his pocket, fishing out the wad of cash that’s accumulated there. “How much was it, baby? I’ll pay you back.”
“Carm, I didn’t ask you to do that.”
“Yeah, well, I’m doin’ it anyway.” He counts out one, two, three twenties—
“Carmen, put that away—”
He looks up at you, raises his brows, dishes out a fourth and a fifth. “What?” He doesn’t even flinch when he folds the bills in two and leans over the console to slip them in your purse, sneaking a kiss to your cheek as he does so, just because he knows it’ll distract you. A hand on the wheel now—a veiny, tattooed hand, enough to make you drool—with the other holding your jaw, he kisses you again, the corner of your mouth to keep your lipstick in tact. “Use my card next time, you hear me? Doesn’t matter what it’s for.”
You frown. “But I feel bad . . . I make my own money, y’know.”
“You’re not supposed to spend your money, baby, you’re supposed to spend mine.” Again, he kisses you, guiding you where he wants you with his thumb and index gently holding your chin so you can’t look away. “I got you, baby. Lemme take care ‘f you.”
And, well, when he puts it like that . . . it’s not so hard to oblige.

Thinking about being in a zombie apocalypse w/ Price
Pairing: John Price x Male reader
CW: major character 💀
Thinking about you and Price having feelings for each other ever since you can remember, but you’ve never gotten the courage to confess and time never seems right especially when a zombie apocalypse breaks out.
Suddenly you’re too busy trying to survive and thoughts about confessing are long forgotten about.
However one day when it’s just you and Price out on a patrol, gathering necessities before night comes, you end up getting bitten and for the first time since the apocalypse happened you see Price truly shaken up.
He’d been the first to take charge when the apocalypse broke out, the first one to put his feeling aside and focus on surviving the horror that was now your every day life.
But in this very moment he looks so lost, frozen in place eyes wide and mouth agape before he gathers himself enough to shoot the zombie dead and pull you to the side.
You already know what this means, you remember him being the first to say it.
If someone gets bit we shoot them dead no hesitation.
He just never thought- never dared think it would be one of his own at some point, someone so close to his heart yet so far away.
However before you can even suggest it, he’s pulling you into his embrace, lips pressing against your temple and whispering “it’s okay, it’s okay, just a minor scratch” as the blood soaks through your sweater because denial has always been his best friend.
“You’ll be okay you’ll be okay you’ll be okay” he mutters over and over again as he rips a piece of his shirt before he grabs ahold of your wrist, hands shaking as he rolls up your sleeve to see the damage.
It’s clear as day, it’s not just a scratch but teeth marks deeply etched into the skin, with blood continuously pouring out from it.
You feel your eyes fill with tears, bottom lip wobbling before the wound’s covered by a piece of fabric.
“John” you say as he begins to wrap it.
“Hush” is all he says in response albeit his voice is sounding weaker and you see the way his hands shake, can hear him take shaky breaths, can feel he’s falling apart right before your eyes as he applies the gauze.
“John” you say again with your hand resting on his but even then he won’t look up for your wound
“John you have to do it” you say again and that’s when he finally looks up, cerulean eyes filled with tears and bottom lip wobbling as he grabs ahold of your neck to pull you closer to him
“Do you hear yourself boy?!”
“You’ve said it yourself! If someone gets bitten we shoot them dead!” You say, your own furry reflecting on your face
“That is not the same thing! That is not what - that’s not” his eyes close, tears trickling down his cheeks and his voice cracks when he speaks “you’ll be okay it’ll be alright we’ll just wait til the rest of the boys get here yeah?”
You bite your tongue, swallowing down the bile rising at the back of your throat before you nod your head in response because after all you too have made denial your very own best friend.
The first hour passes and Price makes sure to dry the sweat from your forehead, gives you some food and water to shove some nutrition into your body while continuously changing your bandage with the limited supplies he has with him.
The boys arrive by the third hour and he doesn’t even allow you to mention the bite, just explains you had some bumps in the road but managed to get your supplies. He has an arm around your waist, body flushed against yours to support your weight as he walks you back to the camp, explaining to the rest that you’re just tired it’s been a long day and that he’ll be the one to take you to bed.
By the fourth hour you’re shriveled up in your sleeping sack, running a fever while heaving up your dinner, all while price is there hands once again shaking eyes glassy as he wipes the sweat of your forehead and makes sure you take proper gulps of water.
By the fifth hour you’re reminding him once again that you won’t make it there’s no cure for this and denial has overstayed its welcome but he’s having none of it head shaking and lip turned down into a frown “why?! Why why why are you keeping me alive?!” You almost sob out. “Because I love you, that’s why, do you understand now?!” He yells, the captain tone slipping into his voice as he explains how you’ve got his whole heart in your hands.
A silence falls over the two of you because what is there to say for two people that are doomed.
By the 6 hours silent tears are trickling down your half changed face, blunt nails digging into the palm of Price’s hand while your heart beat gradually slows down.
By the 7th hour, dusk has turned to dawn and 141 find you and Price laying on the floor, hand in hand, with matching bullet holes in your temples.
In the palm of Price’s hand they find a note, on it the words “to be loved is to be changed” are written on paper, later on they’ll find a bite on his body that matches yours.

Stupid Cupid
Summary: Only your dear friend, Dante, would be the one to get so tired of your obliviousness to one another's love that he'd force you both to go on a blind date.
And how do you two return the favour? Well, it's an eye for an eye, right?
Notes: This one's not all that good to be honest.
5426 words.
Tumblr media
“Y/N”.
You glanced up from your phone at the clean-cut man with brown curled hair and a neat goatee sat under his chin. You raised an expecting eyebrow at Dante who leaned his weight on his hands against the table you were sitting at, leaning over and towering over you.
“Can I help you?” you asked, ending the tense silence.
“Tyler likes you”.
Not this again.
You sighed and went back to scrolling through Instagram.
“No, he doesn’t”.
“How would you know that?”
“I just do”.
It was his turn to sigh and drop his head, deciding to sit down on the chair opposite you. He knew there was no use in convincing you - he’d tried countless times - yet he still thought that maybe one day you’ll be all like “Oh my god, really? I’m going to give Tyler a biiiiig kiss!”
At first he made little comments like “stop flirting, you two” whenever you both were laughing at something and simply having fun.
Then it was the suggestive winks and nudges which were attempts to direct your attention to one another in a more romantic light (which was obviously to no use).
He once made a remark about how you never date anyone or ever have a boyfriend and you promptly came out saying, “It’s hard to date when I’m head over heels for Tyler”. You’d responded so casually that the Martin brother had almost laughed it off, but he quickly realised what you'd just admitted to.
Why weren’t you embarrassed? Was it sarcasm? You didn’t acknowledge your response at all, not even a single movement to indicate how you were feeling.
This all led him to that moment. The moment where he spent every waking hour tormented having to watch the both of you as clueless and ignorant as the other, like children lost at the grocery store looking for your parents.
“Why don’t you just ask him?” he asked for maybe the fourth or fifth time this week.
“Nah I’m good”.
Of course that was your response. Of course you acted like you didn’t care. Of course you wouldn’t be willing to even take a chance, to believe one of her friends, one of Hook’s closest friends. He considered giving up, but for some reason he felt like he was their cupid, the one to shoot the arrow for two of his very good friends.
“Alright then”, he replied.
You expected Dante to declare that the end of his attempt to make a fool out of you, however, he still hadn’t left the table and continued to stare at you, almost trying to study you.
Feeling the eyes piercing into you, you looked up from your phone again, them not having left the screen for the whole encounter.
“I don’t mean to be rude, but when are you going to stop?” you asked, tired of being asked the same questions religiously.
“Stop what?”
“Trying to make me and Tyler a thing”.
Dante rolled his eyes and shook his head in comprehension. Did you even hear yourself?
“When you both realise you’re in love with each other”.
“How many times do I have to tell you? It’ll never happen. He’s not interested”.
You wanted to enjoy your lunch in peace and apparently that wasn’t going to happen here so you stood up and started collecting your things. He never meant to annoy you; he wanted quite the opposite, trying to make you happy with the person you’d liked for so long, but the frustration from not being able to get through to you was starting to drive him crazy.
“I give up. I can’t do this anymore. I just can’t with you. You’re impossible!”
You gaped at the hypocrisy, taking offence.
It was true. You had a uh… shy liking towards the hooded man who mostly kept to himself, ‘shy liking’ being a major understatement. You were very good friends… that’s all… and that was your problem. You didn’t let it get the better of you hence why you constantly brushed it off whenever Dante brought up the subject. It was easier to ignore the feelings and let everyone live their happy single lives than pine over a stupid boy like some teenage girl.
“I’m impossible?! Try talking to a guy who’s never shown any interest in you and then have another friend insist that he’s crazy for you”.
You turned your back to him and walked out of the catering room in an attempt to find a more private space to finish your lunch.
So that ‘s what the problem was, huh? Hook just wasn’t showing enough interest in you.
Dante sat there, head in hands, desperately trying to think of his next approach. He knew he should stop pestering you because he didn’t want to damage the friendship you’d made over the years, but he was way too committed to the whole stupid cupid act to give up then.
He’d have to speak to Hook.
—
“Y/N likes you”.
Similar to how you were before, Tyler was hunched over his manspread legs, staring at his phone, his posture and hoodie being his only recognisable properties as his face was almost completely hidden by his hood.
“Yeah, right”, he replied, eyes not leaving his phone. He, too, had experienced countless of Dante’s naggings.
Dante - who was standing directly in front of him - crossed his arms and readjusted his footing, knowing this conversation would be as hopeless as all the others.
“What makes you think that she doesn’t?”
“She likes Ethan Page”.
Wha…? Where the hell did that come from?
He was quick to respond. “She doesn’t even talk to Ethan Page”.
“All the women here like Ethan Page”.
“...alright then”.
As quickly as the conversation had started, Dante Martin walked away, unable to understand what exactly had just happened.
Had she ever even spoken to Ethan Page?
He got to the end of the hall and stopped dead in his tracks, finally realising that Hook had just been trying to cause confusion so he’d leave. Great. Very clever.
He twisted his head to glance at his friend who was looking back at him, a smirk spread across his face which turned into a snicker as he went back to concentrate on whatever was on his phone.
This would take a lot more effort than he was currently putting in. If he really wanted his two friends to be happy, he would have to be a lot smarter than simply telling them the truth. Apparently, honesty was not as reliable as it should be.
—
You were inside the locker room, doing some quick stretches before your upcoming match, Dante standing a few feet in front of you, but this time not to convince you of Tyler’s feelings, strangely.
“I’m not going”, you said straight.
“It’s only a little blind date. My treat. It’ll help you get your mind off Tyler”.
He knew he was pushing his luck asking you to agree to go on a date with a complete stranger, but it was vital for her to accept for his dastardly plan to go ahead.
“I don’t need help, but I do need to go to my match”.
You attempted to pass him but he swooped his body in front of yours at the last second second, preventing you from leaving. You could have sworn this was classed as harassment.
“Just one date tomorrow. If you’re still not happy after twenty minutes then text me and I’ll call you pretending there’s an emergency so you can leave”.
You really did not want to go out on a date as there simply wasn’t any time for it in your schedule. Didn’t he know you had a very successful wrestling career to keep up? Perhaps if you had more time to think about it, you would have come to understand that Dante was hiding some sort of trick up his sleeve, however, in a rush to get to your match which was starting in 15 minutes, your brain took in every word at face value.
“Ugh fine. One date. But I swear, if I turn up and he’s holding a bouquet of red roses and uses the words ‘ladies first’, I’m doing a 180 and sprinting out of there”.
His lips turned into a victorious smile. “You won’t be disappointed”.
Now it was Hook’s turn.
—
Hook would be easy to convince. Dante knew exactly what would sway him.
“Heeeyyy how about a date tomorrow night?”
Hook was taken aback by the question and stared with a shocked look plastered over his face.
“No no no!” Dante scrounged for a clarification. “Not with me, dude. With a girl I know. It might make you feel better”.
The questioning look he once gave had now been shaken off. “Fuck that”.
“Come on, I’m paying for the whole thing. And if you don’t like it I’ll take you to a strip club and pay for everything”.
Hook considered his options very briefly. A blind date that could potentially turn into love, and if that fails, he gets a chick’s ass to make the ‘heartbreak’ all better. Works either way.
“When and where?”
Dante mentally smirked in deviousness and satisfaction. He knew he had won.
—
You only had thirty minutes to get yourself ready for your date, so heavy makeup wasn’t exactly an option like it usually would be for going out. You chose to wear a F/C satin mini dress that hugged your waist, kept up with stringed straps that tied on the top of your shoulders. You decided to show yourself off a little and not take the modesty approach you normally take with your baggy hoodies and leggings you wear around backstage.
Your date would be in for a treat, that was for sure.
You took a taxi to the restaurant Dante told you to be at and sprayed yourself with perfume a couple of times and made sure you looked presentable before opening the door to the place. You might as well try and make some sort of an effort.
You knew that you weren’t meant to be excited about this date - and honestly, you weren’t all that much - but you thought about what Dante had told you about trying to get over Hook. Maybe it was time you got yourself out there and date someone because your chances with him weren’t exactly looking good.
“Hi, I’m Y/N L/N. I’m supposed to be meeting someone”, you told the lady who greeted you.
“Of course. Someone’s already paying for your dinner tonight, correct?”
You nod. “Right this way”.
You weaved around tables of seemingly happy couples (you didn’t know about their personal problems) and past booths of families with rowdy children until you were stopped at one of the tables for two.
Your eyes travelled from their chest that leaned forward into the table and his elbows resting on the surface, to the ties of their light grey hoodie, one being twiddled with his fingers. Then you saw the sharp, well-defined jawline that had quietly driven you crazy for the past 3 years. Your eyes finally reached his cold ones that peered into your own.
He must’ve been as surprised as you were.
You thanked the lady and sat down opposite to Hook, who swiftly scanned your body before it was hidden by the table. With any luck, he’d be able to get a closer look later. He figured it was best if he didn’t mention that he could’ve gone to a strip club, not wanting to put you off, and ultimately preferring the date over anything else.
“This…” you began. “...is definitely not what I expected”.
“Can’t say I’m complaining”, Tyler said, glancing at the only part of the dress visible to him which just so happened to be where your breasts were. Coincidence? Could have been, but probably not.
“Did you know about this?” You ignored the butterflies that flew in your stomach caused by his teasing and leaned into the table slightly as to whisper your question. It wouldn’t have made a difference, of course, as no one around you would have cared why you were here.
“No. Dante told me to come here for a blind date”.
Dante, you sneaky prick.
“He said the same to me!” You avoided the few strange looks that were shot across to you for raising your voice. “So uhh what now?”
You tried to cover the blush that had risen in your cheeks with a hand, having no knowledge whether it was actually effective or not.
“Make the most of a free dinner I guess”, Tyler chuckled, making you feel a lot more comfortable about the situation. “You’d better be hungry because we’re going for the most expensive of everything. Let’s bleed him dry”.
You thought it was hilarious that Hook wanted to take advantage of Dante’s good deed, even if it was plastered in deceit. You wanted to believe he was joking about ordering the most expensive options, but you wouldn’t put it past the man to take the opportunity for the upper hand, and you certainly wouldn’t say no to a good meal.
“I can get behind that”, you took a look at the menu, immediately spotting your choice of weapon. “I think the seventy dollar steak has my name written all over it”.
“That’s the spirit”. Your eyes met in sync and you found yourselves unintentionally exchanging smirks.
“Seriously, though. What steak is that expensive?”
“Good ones”.
“It better be”.
Throughout the night, the two of you - not only having drained your friend’s bank account - had more fun than either ever had before or could ever imagine. You somehow ended up playing footsies under the table and the occasional knee collided with the roof of it, resulting in some snobby couple next to you giving you both disgusted looks, glancing at your legs. They must have thought you were trying to pull off some Fifty Shades Of Grey shit.
You decided to order a sharing dessert platter which was a lot more romantic and cliche than you’d anticipated, which was bizarre for you because you absolutely despised all of the date cliches. They just made you cringe and they got boring after experiencing the same things time and time again.
And why was this time different? Because you were with Hook. You were with Tyler. You knew him and you knew he didn’t give a crap about giving you a bunch of flowers or trying to please you by being someone he’s not. All he cared about was that he was happy, you were happy, and you both were having a great time. That’s all you needed.
After eating one of the chocolate dipped waffle pieces and stopping yourself from moaning in delight at the amazing mouthgasm it gave you, Tyler sent you an amused look.
“What is it?” you asked, licking the chocolate that dripped onto your fingers because you didn’t bother trying to act classy by using one of the skewers. Elegance was overrated.
“You have chocolate all around your mouth”.
You immediately began to lick your lips, imagining how much of a child you must have looked.
“It’s still everywhere”, he snickered at your frustrated face as you tried to lick it all away. How much chocolate could be on your face anyway?
You gave up and reached to grab a napkin when Hook’s hand grabbed your wrist so you couldn’t lift it to your mouth. The entire time, practically peering into your soul.
“What are you doing?” you asked him.
“What would you do if I licked the rest of the chocolate off so you don’t have to?”
You felt your heart thump and you felt it might leap out of your chest, the inflamed feeling of the skin contact on your wrist rapidly circulating around your entire body.
“Didn’t take you to be a guy who’s into food play”. You enjoyed teasing him. He let out yet another low chuckle and released your wrist, you instinctively rubbing the area he was holding, only now realising how tight his grip was and how much you enjoyed it.
“Here”, he said whilst grabbing the napkin you were originally reaching for and wiping the chocolate you’d missed around your mouth. It was sweet. Cliche but sweet.
After finishing your meals, you decided to share a taxi to the hotel you were both staying at, and spent the entire five minute journey talking about how blind you both had been.
“So basically, you’re so cool that I mistook it for you simply not being interested in me?” you asked, finally realising where you’d gone wrong all this time.
“If that’s how you want to see it. I always knew you had a thing for me”.
“Oh fuck off”, you laughed off, playfully nudging his arm. “You were as oblivious as I was”.
“Maybe. But you didn’t make it easy”.
“I didn’t make it easy? Maybe if you’d looked at me every once in a while then you would’ve seen me looking back”.
Tyler set a small smile and wrapped an arm around your middle, pulling you closer, his hand fitting perfectly in the crescent of your waist.
Screw seatbelts, right?
“It doesn’t matter now”, he told you. “And we can thank Dante for that of all people”.
You did feel a little guilty for not believing Dante for all the times he told you that Hook was into you, which sounded like you were back in high school and your friends were gossiping about their latest crush that were ‘totally into them’ - except they weren’t.
“We’re getting revenge on him, right?” you ask.
“Oh, yeah, baby. No doubt”.
—
Dante was thrilled that you hadn’t messaged him to get you out of the date with Hook - not that he thought you would once you’d seen who your blind date was. So when Collision came about, he was ready to tease you both and gloat at how right he’d been all along.
The first person he crossed paths with was Hook who was sitting on the steps that led to the backstage entrance to the elevated seating. As per usual, he had his earpods in and was snacking on a bag of chips. He’d probably benefit from going outside once in a while.
He looked to see who had sat next to him, tilting his head upon greeting his friend, Hook’s mind going over the plan you and him had formed at the door of your hotel room before you uh… got to know each other a little more than you already did.
“So…”, Dante began with a sly grin formed upon his face. “Did you like her?”
Hook looked away, scrunching his face in the process. “She was alright I guess. A bit awkward. Personally, not my type”.
Dante’s face dropped, all previous hope completely drained away.
How? He was fucking in love with her the other day. What the hell happened?
“But you said you liked her”.
Hook’s face twisted in confusion. “When did I say that? I’d never even met her”.
Oh no. Oh shit. This can’t be happening.
With a long sigh, Dante’s hands covered and rubbed at his face, hoping that what he thought might have happened, didn’t.
“Please say we’re both talking about Y/N”.
“Y/N? No. The woman you set me up with. What was her name again? Dalia or Delia or something like that”.
An frustrated groan left Dante’s throat and he leaned back, ignoring the jabbing feeling in his back from the stairs.
“I set you up with Y/N, man. What the fuck happened?” He wasn’t shouting, but there was a clear element of bitterness behind his words.
“I wish it was Y/N. At least then my date wouldn’t have tried to call the cops”.
Dante didn’t think his face could fall anymore, yet somehow he managed it. He was speechless. As much as he wished he could get up and leave, pretending none of this happened, he needed to know more.
“Tell me. What. Happened”.
Hook was unfazed by the irritation in his friend’s voice, and he casually continued eating his chips whilst retelling his version of the night’s events.
“Well, you see…”, he started, shuffling to make himself more comfortable. “The waitress took me to the table and I was there for like five minutes, man, and she didn’t turn up”.
Dante rolled his eyes at his impatience but continued to listen to his story.
“So like I turned around and saw a woman sitting at a table by herself so I must’ve been at the wrong table, and I went over to her, tried my best to be the gentleman I am but she was like… being a bitch”.
Yeeeaaahhh Dante didn’t believe that for a second. Hook being a gentleman? Some woman being a bitch for no reason? He wasn’t buying it.
…what did he do to that poor woman?
“And what exactly did you say to this woman?”
“Literally all I said was ‘this is awkward’ and she agreed, asked what I was doing and said her husband would be back any minute. Like, I swear she was alone the entire time I was in the restaurant. If she didn’t want to date me, she should’ve just said rather than coming up with some stupid fucking excuse like she didn’t know who I was”.
There was no way this was actually happening. He wasn’t this stupid… was he?
Dante wasn’t actually sure on that one. He knew he was a quiet, furtive man who usually kept to himself, and that he was incompetent enough to not realise how infatuated you were with him, but was it really that bad that he would harass a random woman in a crowded restaurant? Probably.
“Oh and the whole time I was there? No sign of any husband. Fucking lame excuse”.
Dante rubbed the corners of his eyes hoping he’d wake up from this strange dream he hoped he was having.
“So you left after that, right?” he asked.
“Sort of. After I tried to kiss her”.
The relieved sigh midway through was cut short and Dante thought he might have forgotten how to breathe, but sucked in a breath whilst shaking with anger.
“Why the hell would you try to kiss her if she said she wasn’t interested?!”
“Her story was bullshit, man! I thought she was playing hard to get but she tried to slap me”.
“Tried?”
“Obviously I wasn’t going to take that shit. Bitch was crazy. Where’d you even get her?”
Dante ignored his question - baffled by the complexity of the situation - and asked one of his own.
“And you didn’t see anyone there you knew?”
“Nah, man”.
“Got it”.
He now had a new mission - to find you and ask why you’d bailed out on the date. Hook’s story was far too in detail to be made up, and - in hindsight - he should have expected you to not turn up to the restaurant without any warning.
He didn’t turn back when Hook asked where he was going. He kept walking at his fast pace until he saw you outside the locker rooms, chatting to Anna Jay about God knows what.
He didn’t care. He didn’t care what you were talking about or even if either of you were talking when he walked right up to you and asked, “Why didn’t you go on the blind date?”
You shot him a look of shock and confusion causing Anna Jay to leave the both of you alone, much to your dismay.
“What are you talking about? I did and he didn’t show”. You crossed your arms and leant against the wall behind you, not thrilled at his interruption.
“That’s not possible because the person I set you up with was there and said that you never showed”.
“Well then we must have missed each other because I was there for ten minutes and he didn’t come”.
Dante felt dizzy with the number of times he’d rolled his eyes that day. You and Hook were just as impatient as the other, not bothering to wait a minute longer before declaring the unlikely as fact.
“What, so you just left after that then? Was that it? You didn’t even call me to tell me he wasn’t there?”
“Hey, I was going to wait. Ain’t no way was I going to skip out on dinner. I just got… distracted”.
Dante narrowed his eyes in suspicion. He could tell by the way you bit your lip and averted your eyes that you were hiding something.
“Distracted how?” he asked, slowly. You struggled to hide the smirk that begged to show on your face. You were relishing in the thought of lying through the skin of your teeth to him.
“I may or may not have been given a few… suggestive glances from a man a few tables along from mine, and I may or may not have met him in the restroom, and I may or may not have let him do me in front of the mirror… turns out he was married… ”
This was far worse than what Dante could have imagined, especially after the harassment story he got from Hook before coming here to find you. The both of you were going to get the biggest scolding of your lives and he planned to end the tension between you there and now.
“You had sex with a married man?” You nodded. “Did his wife not try to find him?”
“No. We were gone for like twenty minutes and I don’t even think she got up from the table”.
“But I would’ve thought you of all people wouldn’t stoop to such-”
Dante’s thoughts stopped him in his tracks and all the pieces of the puzzle very quickly came together.
The woman with the missing husband. The harassment. The married man with you for a while. It all made sense now. You must have entered the restaurant first, went to the back with the man, then Hook arrived and bothered the woman so she didn’t have an opportunity to look for her husband, and because he was with you, Hook thought she was lying.
In a twisted way, Dante was satisfied that he managed to solve the mystery like Sherlock Holmes as he now understood where you’d both gone wrong and could empathise slightly with both predicaments. That wasn’t to say he wasn’t utterly infuriated. After all, you were thick as shit and somehow slipped out of each other’s arms once again by some coincidence, but he could work with that now.
Without another word, Dante grabbed ahold of your wrist and began dragging you through the twists and turns of the backstage area, dodging and weaving through the many people rushing to get things ready before showtime. He was focused on his mission like Tom Cruise. He’d acquire many characters trying to pair the two of you together apparently.
You, however, could only think back to that mind-melting moment two nights ago when Tyler had grasped the exact wrist being held now. It was nothing like the grip that gave you that tingly feeling throughout your body, but you could still imagine.
You were pulled into one of the large entry hallways and came to register Dante’s plan when you caught a glimpse of the very person you had just been thinking about sitting on the steps.
So antisocial.
You let out a small yelp when flung in the direction of Hook, but you managed to catch yourself on the railing. Hook, now noticing the both of you, sent out sceptical looks before putting his stuff on the step next to him and pushing himself up to stand beside you.
“Alright”, Dante led, glancing back and forth between you both. “I didn’t think it would come to this, but now we have to talk about how you destroyed some happy couple’s marriage”.
You expertly acted like you didn’t know what he was talking about just so he could keep going to see how long you’d be able to carry the lie out for. Oh, how pleased you were.
“I set this blind date up for the two of you and the fact that you by some means ruined a nice relationship instead and not see how smitten you are for one another is beyond my comprehension. You’re both insufferable”.
“It couldn’t have been that good of a marriage if he was willing to have sex with me”, you chimed in. Why not make it a little worse?
He continued to rant about his own struggles and how he’s tried to help this entire time but neither of you care blah blah blah. In all honesty, you forgot he was talking a few seconds into his rambling.
You felt a touch on the small of your back before curling around your waist like it had done in the taxi and you turned your head, making instant eye contact with Tyler who you’d been texting non-stop since that night. You weren’t officially official by any means, but you could tell you were only a few intimate moments away from it finally happening. You did things that night. Beautiful, magical things.
You reciprocated his affection with your head resting on his shoulder, Dante not having caught on to you as he was too busy pacing back and forth, ranting about how bad he felt for the ‘married couple’ you destroyed.
“This was worth it”, you whispered close to Tyler’s ear. He didn’t meet your gaze but he did break into a small smile.
“This was only meant to be a little matchmaking. How could it go so horribly wrong?” Dante finally turned his attention to yours and Hook’s close proximity. “And here I am freaking out because you’ve fucked up and you can’t even keep your hands off each other… oh… you’re messing with me, aren’t you?”
You gave him a wide smile and nodded, making yourself more comfortable against Hook’s side.
This time when Dante’s face dropped for the millionth time (it had practically fallen on the floor now), it was in shame, disbelief that he actually fell for your lies. It made no sense. He helped you get together and that’s how you repay him? In that moment, he finally accepted that there was no way he would ever understand the way you both functioned.
Hook, taking advantage of the stand-still the three of you were in, slipped his arm away from your waist and intimidatingly strutted toward the Top Flight guy, coming almost nose-to-nose with him. You all knew he was joking when he fisted the top of Dante’s hoodie and said in a low grunt, “Next time you try and fuck with me or Y/N, we can take this to the ring. Understood?”
Oh, that was hot.
You heard the Brooklyn accent in his threat and it drove you crazy; you were melting at his feet with how flustered you were.
“Yeah yeah I get it, man. Don’t worry”, he replied, brushing off his hand. “I’m just happy my plan worked”.
“I’d apologise to you but you did meddle in something that you shouldn’t have”, you told him, pleased you were able to get your own back on him.
“It was either that or wait for you both to get stupidly drunk to confess”.
You squinted and shared a similar look with Tyler. “Actually, I would’ve preferred that”.
Hook nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I probably would’ve been down for that”.
“Why, though? You know what? It doesn’t matter. I won”. He raised his hands in the air and turned to walk out the door before you could say anything more.
In the doorway, Dante thought he might try and edge another word in there and give you a smug ‘your welcome’, but when he turned toward where you two were standing he uh… decided otherwise and gave you some privacy instead.
…you guys were already having a heated make out session.
He wasn’t exactly about to interrupt that. He got people together, not watch them thrive.
Strolling through the ins and outs of backstage, Dante felt sort of lost, like his only source of entertainment whilst waiting for a match or an interview was gone. Who would he set up now?
Then he saw her.
“Hey, Kris!” he called, receiving a warm smile in return. “How do you feel about a certain Orange?”
THE END.

𝐲𝐮𝐤𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐲𝐚 𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐮. the model. he’s a member of the neo egoists and is ranked fifth of the top six racers in blue lock. his charm is the focal point of his character, driving the audience nuts. curious by nature, he wonders what important qualities you possess other than being “kira ryosuke’s date”. he also wonders how you managed to get the likes of barou, who treats everyone like trash, and nagi, who thinks of only going home, wrapped around your finger. seeing you teach nagi about car anatomy gives him the chance to introduce himself. he thinks there’s something special about you, which he intends to find out, but a teammate of his believes so otherwise.
𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐲𝐚 𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐚. the ninja. he’s a member of the neo egoists and is ranked fourth of the top six racers in blue lock. he claims to be not like his fellow racers and teammates and prefers to operate in the shadows. unlike them, he doesn’t see you as an angel who was sent by god in the form of a mechanic to fix their cars. he fails to see why they’re smitten by you, therefore not interested in interacting with you at all. that turns out to be a lie when yukki gives you a tour of the turf of the neo egoists. it’ll be rude not to make you feel welcome, so he wants to give you a chance. a crow-themed racer laughs at him for fooling himself that he doesn’t find you attractive one bit.
𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐮 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐨. the assassin. he’s a member of the neo egoists and is ranked third of the top six racers in blue lock. all about good vibes and having a good time, he doesn’t want his team to act “mediocre” around you. most newcomers are notorious for never setting foot in this place again. he’s so relieved to hear that you came at your own volition thanks to ryosuke’s persuasion, and everyone you’ve met is nice to you… sans certain others, so he doesn’t need to worry about making an impromptu spiel of why blue lock, aka his team dare you add, is great. if you think he’s too friendly for your taste, let’s see if the next guy who’s stalking you right now takes the top of your list.
𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐲𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐢. the joker. he’s ranked second of the top six racers in blue lock. unrestrained both in words and action, he goes about his day and does everything as he pleases. judging by how karasu and the rest of the neo egoists are quick to stand either by or in front of you, he’s bad news. the altercation got team z’s attention, especially kunigami who he has massive beef with. you being “ryosuke’s date” doesn’t phase him, nor your best friend going for his head for being near you. ever since the older itoshi brother joined forces with u20 and chose him to be at this side, he’s been “behaving”. the younger itoshi brother isn’t amused, as if he didn’t break his nose last race .
𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐫𝐢𝐧. the puppeteer. he’s the unofficial leader of the neo egoists and is ranked first of the top six racers in blue lock. the youngest of the itoshi brothers, has a score to settle with his older brother, sae, who’s participating in the upcoming race as a member of u20 along with his personal choice shidou. it’s already bad enough for racers to use physical violence to settle arguments, but it’s even worse for him to be involved in another fight with shidou, especially before a race that determines his fate and prove to sae that he’s the best of the best. he doesn’t spare a glance at you or ask if you’re alright, as sae walks into the neo egoists’ garage to check out the commotion.
𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐬𝐚𝐞. the prodigy. he’s one of the new generation world 11, the best eleven racers in the streets and a member of royale. as he’ll be the only one representing his team in the upcoming race, he joined forces with u20 since they’re short by two members and personally chose shidou to fill in the other spot. even if it’s not obvious at face value, everyone can tell there’s bad blood between the brothers by the intense atmosphere created from their staring contest. sighing, he breaks contact first to search where you are, then looks at rin to scoff at his lack of concern for you when shidou approaches you. in the distance, claps are heard from a man with “u20” on his jacket.
𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐮. the player. he’s the captain of u20, the name of the team you’ve heard from literally everyone who won’t shut up about them for the past several hours. he’s highly respected among his team for his patience; dealing with sae and shidou, the most difficult people to work with on earth, is like a drive around the neighborhood. he intrudes with a reminder that the streets don’t approve of violence and that they’re going to race soon. in addition, a blue lock racer by the name of kira ryosuke has a special guest and they should be on their best behavior. yet he’s a hypocrite, flirting with you in front of his current date and promising you an autograph when he wins.
𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. the magician. he’s the mechanic of bastard münchen. he understands your position as the center of attention, claiming to be just like you — having a partner for an adrenaline junkie and being the “fixer” to clean up your mess. he invites you to see his partner’s car at the special garage as he’s on his way their to fix its engine, to which you happily accept as there’s finally someone with the same job who you can geek about car anatomy and share techniques. the way he repairs the engine is like clockwork, fluid and in tempo. he really is on a different level. you hear a chuckle behind you, asking if you’re fascinated by his work.
𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐤𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫. the thorn. he’s one of the new generation world 11, the best eleven racers in the streets and one of the major forces of bastard münchen. he puts in so much faith and trust in his partner, ness, the “fixer” of his messes. also known as “blue rose” in his turf, he’s shrouded in mystery and seems like the type who can turn the impossible to infinite possibilities. but in reality, he’s a pain in the ass. within minutes of your encounter, he keeps bragging about his abilities and declaring that his victory will lead to the disbandment of blue lock, so they won’t get in his way of his career. the race’s up, and you’re hoping that a blue lock racer wins to shut his mouth.

Guilt-Tripped Pt.2
TW: Canon-typical violence Part 1 part 3 Pairing: Ghostxreader(ish) Summary: The mission does not go according to plan
Wc: 1758 A/N: The fights scenes are fast-paced/rushed intentionally, I was trying to give off the feel of combat, if it did not work please let me know and I'll fix it :)
You were off your game, that much was clear. Not only was this mission located in your mother country, but the base you were clearing was one you had been “trained” in. You were anxious, and you knew Ghost could tell. But, true to form, he did not pry. That was one of the reasons you liked him. Everyone else would have asked questions but Ghost didn’t. He respected your privacy, understood that not everything is meant to be shared.
“Ghost, how copy?”
“Solid. Moving in.”
“Copy.” You unsling your gun from your shoulder, following Ghost into the abandoned building. You cover his six as you clear the building, finger hovering over the trigger of your gun. The ghosts contained in the walls were dogging your footsteps, begging for you to turn and listen to them.
“Again”
“You’ll break them.”
“Only the weak.”
“No, please!”
“Do it again!”
“Do not defy me.”
“Again.”
“Y/N.” You snap back to attention, “Buildn’s clear.”
“Ay. Let’s look for the intel then.”
“It’ll go fas’er if we split up.”
“Ah…I guess.”
“Stay frosty.” With that Ghost heads up the stairs, leaving you to pray he doesn't find anything he’s not supposed to. You take a deep breath and turn away, searching the rooms more intently this time, on the lookout for files and a USB drive instead of hostiles.
The first room has nothing, just some rotting pieces of wood that used to be furniture. Still, something about it leaves you feeling deeply unsettled. You step out and head to the room across the hall, your hairs standing on end. The second room is basically the same, as are the third and fourth. And fifth. And sixth. After the final room reveals nothing, you head upstairs to help Ghost.
The stairs creak under the weight of you and your gear, the sound adding to the already eerie atmosphere. You grit your teeth, forcing yourself to walk through the hallways that haunt your nightmares.
Ghost is in the first room you come to, his face lit up by a computer that somehow is still working. Alarm bells ring in the back of your brain, but you ignore them, instead focusing on the video that is playing.
“Again.”
The video is grainy, but you know the scene well. 3 girls stand side by side, guns in hand.
“Again.”
They drop to the ground, legs swinging around before standing.
“Again.”
They fire simultaneously, one loud gunshot echoing through the room.
“Again.”
“Again.”
“Again.”
“Again.”
“Aga-
The video cuts out, but you still see what happened next.
“-in.” You are faster this time, the girls next to you running out of stamina. You had been at this for hours, a constant stream of crouch, stand, fire, reload. You drop into a crouch, sweep your legs around, and come up, you and the girl to your left firing at the same time. You don’t even flinch as the girl to your right is dragged away.
“Again.”
Crouch, stand, fire, reload.
“Again”
Crouch, stand, fire, reload.
“Again.”
Crouch, stand, fire, reload.
“Again.”
Crouch, stand, fire, reload. And once again, you are faster. The girl to your left is dragged away, leaving only you. Your palms are blistered and your knees are torn open, but you won.
“Y/n.” You stare at the target in front of you, breathing hard.
“Y/n!” You raise your head, searching for the woman in charge of your training. Except the voice calling for you is male, and…British?
“Y/n!” A hand touches your shoulder and you don’t think, just react. Your gun is buried between the persons ribs before your vision even clears.
“Fuck. Ghost I…fuck. I’m s-fuck.” You stagger back, blinking hard as you holster the weapon. Ghost has his own weapon trained on you, though his finger is not on the trigger.
“What in th’ bloody hell was that?” He hisses. You inhale, exhale, and shove your emotion down where they won’t bother you.
“I am sorry.” You say softly, “I zoned out and you…scared me.” He doesn’t say anything in response, just grunts and shakes his head, holstering his gun. You hold your breath as he stares at you with an indiscernible look in his eyes.
“We'll talk when we get t’ base.” He says finally. You nod, fingers trembling as you follow him into the next room. You hadn’t noticed when you were clearing it before but the rooms up here are much more preserved. This room is empty, save for a barre attached to the wall, the one way mirror above it shattered into a million pieces.
The girls dance in unison, repeating the moves over and over and over again. Your tutu makes your skin itch, and your toes are bleeding from the hours of non-stop practice. Still, you don’t complain. Even at seven years old, you know better than to voice your sorrows.
“Good y/n. Again.” Legs burning, feet aching, skin itching, you begin the routine again. You bring your leg up but your ankle rolls, your form wobbling.
“Oh y/n. I had such high hopes for you.” Your body is thrown across the room, stars dancing across your vision as the acrid smell of smoke fills your senses. Wait…smoke?
“Y/n!” You inhale sharply, looking up at Ghost. But he’s not there. In his place is an aging man with a road face and short beard.
“Dreykov.” He’s older, much older, but you would recognize him anywhere. You look around the room, trying to find any sign of Ghost. The simple movement sends waves of pain through your skull, makes your vision blurry. But you've operated in much worse condition before.
“Where’s Ghost?” Your voice sounds oh so far away.
“Hello to you too darling.” You shiver almost imperceptibly at his voice, “Why don’t you use that pretty little head of yours and tell me?” You can barely hear him over the high-pitched whine bouncing around your skull. Oh, right, your ears are ringing. Ringing, why are your ears ringing? You blink hard, taking in your surroundings. The room is filled with smoke, the remnants of the outer wall scattered across the room, the result of an explosion. Something sticky trickles down your face, dripping into your eyes as you put two-and-two together.
You and Ghost had walked into the room, you’d been violently thrown into a flashback, and while you were off in la-la land, Dreykov must have blown through the wall. But that still didn’t explain where Ghost was. You inhale slowly, trying to focus your vision. And-there! You spot a hole in the floor, and the only thing you can think is that Ghost fell through.
Later you’ll blame it your disoriented state for forgetting he was there, but really you just didn’t want to face Dreykov alone. You leave him in the room, leave him to escape with the intel you'd come to collect, and sprint down to the first level to find Ghost. You jump over fallen bits of ceiling, dodging debris as the building slowly falls apart around you.
Ghost is prone on the ground, a Widow prowling around his body. They always did like to play with their food.
Without thinking you launch into the fray, tackling the Widow over his back. It is a short but intense fight, serving as a distraction as Ghost forces himself up. It ends when she throws a sloppy punch towards your face. You grab her wrists, yanking her forward and sweeping her legs out from underneath her. She hits the ground at the same moment you unload your weapon into her chest.
“You always did think you were better than us.” You spin around as you reload, swaying slightly as your vision blurs again. Another widow, one you failed to notice, stands behind Ghost, a gun pressed at his head.
“I did not.” Your voice is calm and even, not betraying your inner distress as your eyes dart around the room as you try to find a way to get her away from him.
“Yes you did.” The widow snarls. She draws another weapon, slamming the butt of it into Ghost's skull with startling force, leaving him to collapse like a ragdoll.
“We were always second best, always the ones punished, always the ones in trouble. Nothing compared to you.” You begin to circle each other, your eyes trained on the gun she has aimed at you. The motion makes you sick, and you can’t hear anything over your focus on staying awake.
You blink, and suddenly the widow is in front of you. Just as she wraps her finger around the trigger Ghost, who'd be faking his apparent unconsciousness, tackles her. You can see how the scene will play out, and it doesn't end pretty.
You throw yourself at the Widow Just as she plants her gun in Ghosts chest, sending both of you flying across the room. She ends up on top you so you buck your hips, sending her flying forward. You're moving on pure instinct at this point, to dizzy to think.
You wrap you arm around hers and swing your leg over her side, using the momentum to flip positions so that you're on top. You draw your firearm, but are a millisecond too slow.
She flings you off, your skull bouncing of the pavement as you fall to the side. You manage to keep a grip on your weapon but God's does your head hurt.
You blink yourself back into awareness, coming too just in time to watch Ghost grapples with the Widow for he gun. Ghost may be good, but the Widow is great.
You are too dizzy too see straight, but that's no problem. The Institute had made sure you could shoot a target blindfolded, so you close your had around your 9 mil, raise it front of you, and fire.
You are awarded with a female cry of pain, a thud, and silence.
"You...solid?" You wheeze, gun still held tight in your hand.
"Aye. Y'...y' no' lookin' t' gud there." You can barely hear him, swaying slightly where you stand. Gods your head hurts.
You step forward, practically collapsing into Ghost. You can feel his heart beating rapidly, and you think he's talking to you, but you can’t hear him. Though blurry, your eyes are drawn to the Widow laying in a pool of blood, her brown hair pillowing her head.
It makes you sad, almost, to see someone who didn't get saved. Survivors guilt is what your court-therapist had called it. You thinks it was a load of bullshit but it's not like...is she moving?
You flip around Ghost without thinking, unloading your weapon on the Widow just as her bullet pierces your flesh.

Of Kindness and Empathy 6
First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, AO3
Danny had been having a good day.
It had been two weeks since he’d returned to Amity, and his parents were actually calmed down a little from the experiments. Some reporter had dropped by from Metropolis, of all places, and somehow made them see that Ghosts were not only sapient, but had their own culture and hierarchy.
Danny did not ask what the reporter lady had said to them, but when Tucker had asked his dad had gotten a haunted look in his eye and just. Shut down, for a bit.
Even his mom looked ashamed, and ever so slightly traumatized.
Jazz told him and Sam and Tucker that she hadn’t heard everything, but that the reporter had torn them a new one for so long it was sunset by the time their dad distracted the lady with the portal.
She’d gotten there at lunch.
Newspapers were the newest addition to the list of things banned from the house.
So instead of running from his parents shooting at him, he was instead running from them holding notepads and asking him cultural questions about Ghost society.
Which would have been great, if Danny knew much about Ghost society, but Danny did not know much about that culture.
He was incredibly tempted to get one of the eyeball ancients and sic his parents on them.
Or maybe sic them on Tucker, for how weird he was being.
His best friend had been stand-offish for a couple of days before coming back with an almost smothering vengeance, quoting books written by politicians for whatever reason.
Then, there was the fact that Tucker kept looking like he knew something, constantly staring at his phone and making Phantom pose for shoots, but he refused to say what.
“It’ll be funnier,” was all the techie kept saying, hiding behind his phone screen.
Danny didn’t think Jazz or Sam were in on it, they looked about as confused as he did. Jazz saying she was writing her entry essays to different universities, and Sam going on a tangent about how social media was a parasite on the human brain.
It had been just that morning that she and Tucker had been wrestling for Tucker’s phone.
Currently, however, his parents were duking it out with the GIW (and wasn’t that wild?) and the rest of the GIW unit that was not fighting them was chasing him down.
Their weapons were new, brutal, and they were operating like this was a kill mission. There was no regard for civilians, no signs that they were trying to hold back. They’d shot him with a tracker chip that burned and hadn’t stopped chasing him since.
Huntress was preoccupied; a family reunion four states away, so no help from there.
Sam and Tucker and the Phantom Phan Club were trying their best to distract the GIW, but after the bastards had dumped specialized pepper spray on them Danny had resorted to leading them away.
He really hoped that there wouldn’t be any permanent side effects from that; it’d had a strange green glow mixed in. If something had happened to his friends, he’d never forgive himself. He just needed to get away long enough to get the tracker out, and he’d double back to make sure they were okay.
But he’d been flying for so long, and he’d already been shot more than a few times.
This was…not going well.
He needed help.
He hated asking for it.
He had no choice.
The phone was slick with his own blood as he pressed the speed dial to get Mr. Wayne.
“Phantom?” Ah, that was his Batman voice. Whoops. Oh well.
“Hey Batman, I think I messed up,” Danny started breathlessly, almost losing altitude before putting on another burst of speed, “GIW tracked me down mid rounds and uh, I wasn’t vigilant enough.”
“Are you injured?”
Danny winced, lifting his free hand away from his new set of holes. Hmmmm. Yup. That was ‘you should probably get stitches’ levels of blood.
“...Yes. I think I’ve been shot three-” Danny let out a sharp yelp as another shot managed to hit, dropping a good fifty feet before rising again, “-Four. Four times. They can track me when I phase, they shot a tracker in me. It’s…moving. I can feel it. I can’t hide. I don’t know what to do.”
The last bit felt like it was being physically ripped out of him. He hated, despised, being forced to admit a weakness like that.
“...Help is on the way, keep your phone on you. I’m sending Superman. Keep talking to me.”
“Wait, you’re sending who-?”
Danny cut himself off and dodged another shot, careful to keep the phone in his hand and not crush it.
“Phantom, come in. Are you there?”
“Yes! Yes, I’m here. Sorry. Didn’t want to get shot again, I can only make so much blood.”
“ETA One minute. Stay with me. You lied about the King of the Infinite Realms, why? Are you afraid of him?”
Danny dodged yet another shot, sure he’d misheard.
“I…didn’t? Unless I misunderstood who the King is.”
He heard Batman say…something, but the glowing cord wrapping around his ankle and slamming him into the ground with enough force to cause a crater provided a slight distraction from the elder hero’s answer.
Shit. The phone was definitely broken.
Danny pushed himself up on shaky arms and forced himself to roll over, watching the government agents swarm around him.
He didn’t have the energy to phase anymore; everything he had was going towards keeping his ghost form up.
Damn. He’d managed a good run, though. And at least the official, recognized hero’s knew he wasn’t a bad guy.
The cord was cutting into him, and really? Exactly how much blood did they think he had?
But he guessed that was the point of catching him.
To find out.
Danny was blissfully unaware of the drone that Dash had managed to cobble together with the science club recording and broadcasting everything to the world.
Blissfully unaware that due to that story in the Daily Planet that not only was Phantom a renowned hero, but had many fans throughout the world.
Blissfully unaware that for the upteenth time, Bruce was watching another kid under his watch dance with death through that same feed.
The watchers cried out at the injustice of what they saw.
And Superman answered their cries.
Superman landed in front of Danny, tanking the shots meant for him and suffering no damage for it. After all, those weapons were specifically meant for ghosts; any other species wouldn’t be hurt by them unless the setting was changed. Which, for the purposes of the hunt, they weren’t.
Superboy landed at Danny’s side, scooping him up into a bridal carry and breaking the cord with one hand.
Superman turned his head and gave Superboy one nod, glancing up at the sky. At the Watchtower, home to their best medical equipment.
Superboy returned the gesture, and shot upwards, away from the Hell he knew Superman was about to rain down beneath him. He’d never seen his progenitor so livid, and he did not want to stick around to find out what would happen.
Superman turned back towards the GIW, eyes a glittering red.
That had been a child. A kid. A young Meta or Alien doing his best to protect and serve, and these people had been legalizing hunting him for sport.
The folks at the Watchtower would take care of the boy.
All he had to do was make sure that their weapons couldn’t be used against a literal child again, right?
Easy.
The feed from the drone cut off in a flash of red.
~~~~~
Flash had been relaxing at the Watchtower-
No, wait.
Flash had definitely been doing serious business in a serious way at their space headquarters.
Yes.
Yes, that was a better way to word that. If Batman found out that his super secret space headquarters was being used as a vacation home instead of for serious business, the man would lose his mind.
Serious business.
Barry narrowed his eyes at his reflection in the glass and took a long, slow sip out of his smoothie.
Sssseeeeerioussssss bussssinesssssssss.
If he channeled it, maybe the security feeds would portray it-
-that was Superboy, wasn’t it?
Flash turned to look just as the kid sped past him and towards the medbay, someone in his arms.
Frowning, the speedster started for the medbay as well, but froze as a loud squeaking noise came from his foot.
“Please don’t be what I think you are,” the hero breathed, looking down to see what he had stepped on.
It was what he thought it was.
Throughout the hallway was a spattered trail of green blood, quickly turning red. Some of the civilian workers met his eyes, shock written on their faces.
The smoothie hit the ground as Flash raced to the medbay, desperate to see which one of them had gotten so drastically injured.
He made it in time to see a flash of white light as Superboy laid the unknown on the gurney and stepped back, and…Flash had no idea who that kid was.
It was not as comforting a thought as he wished.
“Come on Kon, let’s back off so the doctors can get to work.” He gently herded the young Super away from his…friend? Maybe? And said doctors converged on the new kid.
Kon just stepped away from him and almost ripped his own suit in his haste to get his phone out of his pocket.
Flash didn’t even bother to hide that he was listening in as he followed the kid out of the operating room.
“Tim, we got him here.”
Oh, so it was Red Robin’s friend.
“I don’t know what Clark is doing, and I didn’t stick around to find out. He was pissed.”
Superman? Pissed?
Flash glanced through the window in the doorway, at the kid currently being stitched together.
Yeah, he could see that.
“He uh…made a small explosion of light and looked human. Is that normal?”
Flash had a disturbing intrusive thought.
What if he wasn’t Red Robin’s friend and was another one of Batman’s-?
Oh no.
“Yeah, they’re treating him now. I’ll let you know-what? No, you don’t need to come here. No. Well, yes, technically, but-”
Kon sighed and tugged his phone away from his ear. The call was disconnected.
Then he turned and asked the last thing Flash had expected to hear.
“Do you know Constantine’s number?”
“Uh…yeah?”
~~~~~
John Constantine had done a lot of stupid shit in his life.
Selling pieces of his soul, dating people of questionable morals, drinking, smoking, blood rituals-he’d done things. Stupid, idiotic things.
But he could take a small sliver of comfort that he had never made a mistake on the level of which the American government just had.
They’d seriously injured a denizen of the Infinite Realms.
Normally that wouldn’t have mattered that much; Pariah Dark was known not to give too many shits about his subjects individually, and John had been informed that the big bastard was locked in eternal slumber anyways, so his lust for battle was a problem for those in the past.
But the new King, the one Lois Lane had managed to learn about?
That King sounded like someone who cared.
That was new.
That was dangerous.
So when he got a call from Superboy asking if he knew how to treat a being from the Infinite Realms?
John almost messed up his teleportation spell in his rush to get there.
From what Batman had said, this kid was one of the few, if only, Spirits willing to talk things out and seek peaceful solutions.
Maybe his assumption that they had been courting an interdimensional war had been off mark before, but if this kid died there was a very good chance that he wouldn’t be off mark anymore.
The leak into the Realms was in the kids hometown, yeah? The kid was the one going toe to toe with multiple Entities, some of which John Did Not Want To Think About. The little Phantom kept winning those fights.
That meant in Realms culture he was at least incredibly respected.
At max, the result John really hoped wasn’t the case, it meant that the kid was an unknowing ambassador.
That the American government had just gunned down.
John prayed he was wrong.
He knew he wasn’t.
He shoved past Superboy and Flash, ignored their protests, and stomped into the operating room.
A spell on his fingertips and leaving his lips, he got ready to get as much of a read on the kid’s stability as a Spirit as he could.
And froze.
None of the doctors were reacting to it.
No one else could see it.
Why?
Why did this child have the crown?
“No,” John breathed in horror, just as the heart monitor flat-lined.
~~~~~
Superman was…not sure how to proceed.
He’d destroyed the vehicles, the weapons, beaten the Agents black and blue, but this?
This was a little bit outside of his jurisdiction.
The entire town of Amity Park was gone.
Just…gone.
There was a crater where it had been.
It wasn’t a smoking crater, there was no real sign of destruction. The ground around it wasn’t turned up from an impact, the trees weren’t blown down.
It was like someone had reached down and just…scooped the town out of existence.
“Batman, we…have a bit of a problem,” he sighed, opting to ask the detective what was going on.
There was no response.
“Batman?”
Not even static.
“Bruce?”
“Now isn’t a good time Superman.”
He blinked.
“Nightwing? What’s wrong?”
“...Sit down.”
Clark frowned, but obeyed. He felt like he really was not going to like where this was going.
Nevertheless, he floated to the ground and sat back on the grass.
“Okay, I’m sitting.”
He heard Nightwing take a deep breath.
“Daniel-the kid?-just flatlined. They’re trying to bring him back at the medbay.”
His ears started ringing.
“I’m sorry, Clark.”
Nightwing sounded choked up.
Superman didn’t remember taking the comm out of his ear.
He’d been too slow.
A child had been murdered in front of him.
A town had been stolen while he’d been distracted.
He needed a moment.
He just needed to think.
He-
“Hey old man!”
-was mildly offended.
“Excuse me?” Clark turned his head to glare at…another version of the kid he’d just rescued?
Failed to rescue. The boy was dead and there wasn’t anything-
“Yeah, you! Where’s my brother? And the town too, I guess.”
~~~~~
Dani had been trying to get back to Amity before her stupid brother managed to get caught by the GIW. She wasn’t sure why he didn’t just phase away, but they’d probably done something to him.
Now this sad superhero old guy was harshing her vibe.
Also the city was gone, which like, what was with that? Probably just Ghost Zone shenanigans.
Oh right, the old dude was saying stuff.
“-We’re trying to resuscitate him, but-”
“Why?”
“Excuse me?”
Ohhhhh, she’d made him mad. Good. That was better than the sad sack she’d just been forced to deal with.
“We’re dead, duh. We don’t have pulses normally, he’s probably just healing himself.”
He narrowed his eyes at her, full of doubt. Rude. She hadn’t done anything to warrant such mistrust.
“Look, I’ll prove it,” she said, and casually stopped her heart and breathing. She’d only kept it up because Danny had asked her to anyway.
Oh wow, this guy had superspeed? She barely even saw his hand snap out to grab the hearing aide.
“He isn’t dead!” The old guy shouted. Oh, that was like, a communication device or something. Bluetooth, then. Wait, didn’t she just tell him that Danny very much was dead? Talk about selective hearing.
“Clark I don’t know how to tell you what a lack of pulse means-”
“It’s a species thing, he’s healing himself! He doesn’t normally have a heartbeat!”
She could mark the underwear man as rude as well then, interrupting Nice Voice like that. She’d have to get him hearing aides as a gift or something. Help an old man out.
There was more talking on the other side of the line, but she elected to ignore it. It wasn’t important anymore.
Danny was fine, he’d been saved by a bunch of old people. He just needed to sleep for a bit.
Which meant that until he came back, the town was her responsibility.
The old man clearly didn’t know what had happened to it.
Which meant this was a job for super ultra detective Dani.
She would so nail this case on the head.
She floated down the crater, to the bottom and stuck her finger in some dirt.
She’d seen this in movies, so it would totally work.
She then stuck her finger in her mouth.
And spit it back out.
That was disgusting. Movies were dumb. Sam was right, they were just mind-control for the masses.
“Any clues?”
Dani screeched and almost jumped out of her skin, flickering in and out of invisibility.
The old man was behind her, looking a lot happier and genuinely curious if she’d found out anything.
Well well well, a fan?
She could work with that.
“Well, in my personal superior knowledge, I’d say that the town was taken into the Ghost Zone.” Dani crossed her arms and nodded. Yes, that was definitely what happened, no doubts. The how and why, who knew?
“Hmmm. And do you know how to get the town back?”
“Nope,” she answered, popping the “p”, “they should be fine though, they’re used to this. It’ll pop back up eventually.”
The man nodded, glancing around the crater.
“Well, if all we’re doing is waiting for your brother to get better and for the town to reappear, how do you feel about homemade pie? I’m hearing my Ma say she just finished one apple and one blueberry.”
Oh fuck yes she was all about pie.
~~~~~
In the medbay John Constantine had one hand in a tear in reality and the other feeding its essence into the boy.
The kid was a spirit, of course he didn’t need a pulse, that was probably just him tapping out to sleep. Of course, no one listened when John said it; Superman had to be the one to relay that news. Then it was all arse-kissing and bending backwards, ‘oh no Mr. Superman, we’re so sorry Mr. Superman, we’ll get right to work Mr. Superman’ and so on.
It was fine.
John didn’t need them. He’d helped himself often enough that firstaide wasn’t exactly foreign to him.
The state of the Little King’s stitches were a bit ragged, given that the doctors had stopped once he’d been declared dead and John had stepped in to take over that.
Hopefully he hadn’t fucked it up too badly and the kid had a normal healing factor for Spirits.
Other than that, John had effectively taken over the operating room.
There was a sigil drawn in blood on the floor, just under himself and the King. This was what was powering his little tear in reality, and unfortunately also what was shorting out most electrical equipment in the room.
It felt like there were eyes on the other side, watching his every move, feeding him the energy he needed to give to the boy. Nothing attacked his hand, nothing bit it.
The Realms, or its denizens watching him through that crack, knew he was helping.
John was so lost in concentration that the feeling of ice cold fingers wrapping around his wrist that very much was not in the reality tear made him let out a small shriek, ripping said hand away and clutching at his own chest.
Bright blue-green eyes stared back at him in confusion and concern.
Once the fright was over John couldn’t hold back anymore.
This kid was royalty. Where were his bodyguards? Why was he in the Mortal planes when it was so dangerous? Why were teenagers like this?
So he said the only thing he really could, given the situation.
“What the bloody hell were you thinking?!”
Jae Anon here!
I had an idea that popped into my head after seeing something from, if I remember correctly, marmalade-draws. I could be wrong. But basically, a spell or a piece of jewelry or something is enchanted/cast to make anything Person A eats appear in Person B’s stomach.
Here’s my twist on it. It works both ways. So Person B can eat and it’ll appear in Person A’s stomach.
Enjoy!
Oliver prepared his suit and tie to attend his sister’s wedding. As he did so, he had an idea.
“Hey Elijah! Come in here for a second please!” Oliver called out, smirking a little as he heard his boyfriend’s footsteps.
“What’s up Oliver?” Elijah asked, leaning in the doorway. He raised an eyebrow as Oliver handed over a small necklace.
“So you know how I’m into stuffing? Well, I thought it would be fun if you could do it while I was at my sister’s wedding. Then we could have fun when I get back,” Oliver said, smiling as he put a matching necklace around his neck and tucked it under his shirt.
Elijah couldn’t help but smirk at the idea, putting the necklace on. He was very excited for this.
“You betcha. But how do you want to let me to know when to stop? I doubt you’ll have time to look on your phone,” Elijah said, a little concern showing in his voice.
“I’ll drink something so you feel it in your stomach. It’s the quickest and easiest way to do it. I’m gonna be late if I stall any longer. Start whenever you feel ready,” Oliver said, placing a quick peck on Elijah’s cheek before running out the door.
Oliver made it to the wedding with time to spare. As he sat in his seat, waiting for something to happen, he was surprised that Elijah hadn’t eaten anything yet. He went almost the whole wedding without feeling anything.
When dinner was served, Oliver decided to get a little payback on Elijah. He ate almost nonstop taking thirds and fourths on his plate. By the time he finished the fifth plate, he started feeling his stomach begin to get full.
Oliver sighed quietly as he rested his hand on his stomach, excited to feel himself being stuffed. It took a minute, but he felt his stomach become uncomfortably full. Elijah must’ve been taking some big bites because Oliver felt his stomach swell with each one.
Oliver was soon nearing his maximum limit, his stomach growling in response. It wasn’t noticeable yet, but his round belly was beginning to push on his buttoned dress shirt. Oliver took a glass of water and quickly drank it, becoming worried when Elijah didn’t stop. Oliver quickly got up and said his goodbyes, blaming it on an early work day for tomorrow.
Oliver ran to his car and hurriedly started it, groaning as he felt his suit begin straining against his stomach. He quickly unbuttoned his shirt and suit, not wanting to ruin it by popping the buttons. Oliver unzipped his pants, frowning as his stomach easily settled into the open space. As relieving as it was, he was not enthused, despite feeling turned on by the experience. Oliver drove as fast as the speed limit would let him, letting up belches and groans as he did.
By the time Oliver arrived home, he could barely get out of his car with how heavy his stomach was. He looked like he could easily be six months pregnant. The stuffed boy waddled his way into the house, using his hands to hold his stuffed belly. Even then, he could feel mouthful after mouthful of food being shoved into his already strained tummy.
“Elijah! What the heck?!” Oliver exclaimed, closing the door behind him with a huff. In front of Elijah on their coffee table was still loads of food, all meant for Oliver.
“I was napping when you rudely gave me this food baby, so I figured you could use a couple food babies in return,” Elijah said with a grin as he caressed his swollen, bloated abdomen. He immediately chugged a two liter soda, eyes intently on his boyfriend’s stomach.
Oliver groaned as he lowered himself into the soft couch, his stomach swelling and gurgling with the soda. He put his hand up to ask his boyfriend to stop, but Elijah was intent on watching Oliver wriggle uncomfortably. As time went on, Elijah watched as Oliver moaned and groaned with his growing abdomen, clearly stuffed beyond what he was used to.
Elijah decided to stop when Oliver looked nice and round, a record of looking nine months pregnant. He took the necklaces off them and smiled at his boyfriend, taking to gently rubbing and caressing the swollen, red tummy of his boyfriend.
“Now I feel kinda bad. How about next time, you can go to an all you can eat buffet and fill me this full for a change?” Elijah asked, working out bubbles for the little bit of relief Oliver could get. Soon enough, the stuffed man fell asleep. Elijah put a blanket over Oliver, returning to his original seat.
Elijah looked at the pile of food that was still left, deciding to eat the rest so it wouldn’t go to waste. After a couple hours, Elijah sat back and marveled at his stuffed belly. He wasn’t nearly as big as Oliver, but he was close. His shirt stayed snuggly on his stomach, unable to move from the sheer amount of pressure from his bulging stomach.
Elijah now felt really bad for Oliver, feeling what he went through and now understanding his boyfriend. He soon succumbed to his food coma, snoring softly as he lay next to Oliver. The next day was a chore, both still being overly stuffed and bloated. Elijah made sure to tend to Oliver, ignoring his own pains and setting to help relieve Oliver of his.
Awww, these two sound so cute!!! Constantly in a cycle of getting revenge on each other for stuffing one another too much, then feeling bad and coming home to sooth their poor partners over stuffed belly
ive been off tumblr for about about 3 months so looking forward to a good catch up of jude thoughts🤭🤭
keep having this thought of him catching a flight somewhere early in his career and sitting next to you for a few hours. he’s peeking over and watching the movie you are, and you guys end up talking for the entire duration of the flight. at the end of it you both say goodbye etc thinking you guys would never see each other again but every few months you both would just bump into each other, after about 3 times of seeing each other you’d be all like ‘think you’re stalking me’
he’d finally pluck up the courage of asking you to a game or something and the both of you would just be head over heels for each from the beginning
oh i love this actually. you’ll always bump into each other in the randomest of places as well and you’ll say quick little hellos and ask how the other is doing and jude will give some comment abt his career and how well it’s going and you’ll tell him you’ve watched him play a couple times. and ur telling him abt ur job or uni and he’s saying something abt how smart u are and he really likes seeing u get all shy over that compliment. then you’ll say goodbye and think okay that’s definitely the last time but then it’ll happen again and it’s definitely fate. and one day it’ll be like the fourth/fifth time and u bump into him in a coffee shop when he’s back home in birmingham and it’s so ridiculous that this keeps happening. ur joking w him abt “r u sure ur not just stalking me?” and he’s laughing and telling u something abt how pretty girls like u must just be a magnet for him. and he just can’t let this whole thing pass bc to him there has to be a reason u keep seeing each other. and ur pretty and he thinks ur funny and he really wants to take u out. so he’s asking for ur number and making a joke abt how he won’t have to wait three months to see how ur classes are going :(( so u start texting and it’s obvious ur both so into each other, u facetime every night and u just get on so well so after like a week or so jude’s asking if u wna fly over to madrid to go to a match, saying he’ll take u out after and u can stay for a few days and he’ll show u around and ofc ur saying yes and hes immediately booking ur flight (he wldnt let u pay or do anything for it bc it’s his treat) and he’s meeting u at the airport and takes u out for dinner and the whole thing is amazing from the start. he’d be so happy having u at the match and wld make u wear his shirt and wld tease u sm abt it and everyone’s calling him out for showing off and being a flirt but he just can’t help himself. it wld only take another few weeks before he asked u to be his girlfriend
THE REASON WHY YOU LOVE HIM
Maybe it's the way he smiled.
When Akashi Keiji smiles, it’s in a soft way - his lips turn up, cheeks rising a little. When he smiles, the people around who see him blushes, for who has ever seen a sight so beautiful?
But when Akaashi Keiji smiles, it’s warm. His mouth curls upwards, his eyes turning to crescents as they smile, too. His lips part to show a bit of his teeth, while gentle pinks seem to bloom at his cheeks. Sometimes, he laughs shortly after, a sound deep from his throat, melodious and comforting.
The first time Akaashi Keiji smiled at you, it was the day you first met.
He sat right next to you, neat and composed as the other students came filing in. It's the first day of school and you thank the heavens the person you are seated with looks gorgeous and smart.
You were the first to speak.
"Hello." Your voice is quiet, almost shy, a part of you is afraid he won't reply. His head rose and he turned to look at you.
He replied, “Hello.”
You fumble with your greetings and introduction, your own name stumbles out of your lips - there is something about him that has made you a little tongue-tied. When he smiles and gives you his name, your brain is quick to repeat it a second, third, fourth, fifth time. “My name is Akaashi Keiji,” He said, “I hope we get along.”
He smiles. It is the first time you feel your heart skip a beat.
“I’m sure we will.” You respond with a smile.
Maybe it’s his kindness, even if it feels a little limited at times.
Akaashi Keiji knows how to give - all within reason, of course.
He’s the type to lend an eraser or a pencil, but only if it’s the extra.
“Akaashi… can I borrow your pencil?” You asked quietly, leaning to his direction. He looks at you for a brief second, before he turns and opens his pencil case. Soon enough, he’s handing you a pencil,
And when he handed it towards you, your skin buzzed for a second when the two of you touched, even if it was only for a moment. “I’ll return it after class.” You said, he only nods. When you turn away, there’s a thrum beneath your skin and the pencil lended to you feels like gold.
He’s the type to share his book with you, but makes no move to adjust.
So you move your seat closer to his, peering into his open book as you take note of the lesson. Akaashi is kind enough to wait for you to finish taking notes before turning the page, his own hands working quickly to paste translucent sticky notes along the important details. He has an entire pack of it by his side, scribbling more information on the spaces in between.
Akaashi is kind enough to help you study between classes or to help you clear up confusing lessons.
“Factor them, so you can get rid of some of the components.” Akaashi murmurs, writing on your paper to show you. “Like this.” He said softly, patiently. You nod along as he said, “Okay, now you cancel both the (x+1) on the denominator and numerator.” You follow his instructions, calmed by his patience to teach.
“It’ll be easier for you if you memorize the formulas and such. During the quiz, you’ll probably have no time to keep on doing things manually.” He said.
You laugh sheepishly, “I’ll try… you’ll still help me, right?”
“I can help you study.” He said with finality.
The day of the exam, you lean towards him a little, but before you can even ask for his help, his arm has already covered his answers. He raises an eyebrow at you, which makes you turn back to your own paper.
And yet, when you sulk afterwards, he gives you a small carton of banana milk, though he bumps it on your forehead first before he sets it down.
If not, then maybe it’s his voice.
Because when Akaashi Keiji spoke, he spoke smoothly, he did not stutter nor show signs of doubt. It’s one of the reasons why people like him so much.
You look up at him from your seat, watching him stand as he was called on by the teacher. Akaashi opens his book, beautiful eyes finding where the last reader left off, before he starts to speak. His english is a little heavy, yet flows well as he reads the part of the poem assigned to him.
He distracts you enough that you do not realize when the poem has ended and where your daydreaming began.
Akaashi looks at you, blinking before turning away.
If you weren’t called to read the next part, maybe you would’ve paid more attention and saw how he too, stared as you spoke, soft pink rising up his neck.
And if it’s still not that, then maybe it’s because of his presence alone.
Akaashi sits silently to the side, eating a rice ball as he reads a book. All around you, your friends babble on and on about a new cafe that opened just down the street, a few blocks away from your school.
You’re about to say that you want to go to the aquarium instead, when the others started to gush all about the food that they want to try out in the new cafe. “Are you okay with going to the cafe?” They asked you, simultaneously turning their heads towards your direction.
Your throat constricts a little, as if your heart has jumped to your tongue. It takes you a second before you say, “Yeah… sure.”
“Alright, this Saturday, then!” They grinned.
They leave soon after the bell rings, leaving you fiddling with your hands, budgeting everything in your mind. You sighed, when you turned back to the side, Akaashi was looking at you. “Oh, sorry. Were we too loud?” You asked.
“Why didn’t you tell them?” He asked.
Your eyebrows furrow, “Tell them what?”
“That you didn’t want to go to the cafe.” He said simply.
You tense up under his gaze so much that “What?” Is the only thing that you can utter.
“Sorry, I couldn’t help but overhear.” He smiled.
You shake your head, “No, no- but… how did you know?”
Akaashi Keiji’s reply is simple, “Your tone was different. When you really agree to something, you sound much happier than that.” When you don’t reply and only stare back, Akaashi blinks before taking it as a sign that the conversation is over. He turns back to his book, finishing his rice ball as he flipped to another page.
A part of you wants to end it at that, but the other, more impulsive part is quick to ask - “Then, would you like to go to the aquarium with me?”
Akaashi stared for a moment, before he smiled and said, “Sure.”
That was what led to this, to walking under glass-kept waters, where above you both, schools of fish swimming away from sharks, the mutterings of other visitors reaching your ears as they talked.
You try to remember all the fish facts you read up online - maybe it will impress him, maybe it will make him talk more. You go on and on and on. Akaashi only nods along. There is a pang in your heart and you feel your hands tremble.
You try again, you start to ask questions.
“What’s your favorite fish?” You asked, by now, you’ve forgotten that you’re here to look at the animals, not fumble over words as you desperately try to make conversation. Akaashi shrugs - he doesn’t have one.
You try again.
“Have you been to an aquarium before?” Yes.
“When?” When I was 10, I came with my family.
“Did you like it?” Not much.
You spew out questions until you’ve run out of breath trying to get rid of the silence. So you ask a question you don’t like asking.
“I’m sorry, am I annoying you?” You asked. You dread the answer he will give - what if he found you boring, or noisy, or selfish, or a know-it-all, what if he hates you? What if he regrets coming here?
Akaashi responds with a small shake of his head, “You’re not.”
“I’m sorry, I’m just trying to fill the silence-” You said again, you don’t believe that you’re not. Because you’ve heard that before. “I just-” You hate yourself for stuttering, “I just don’t want this to be boring.”
“You don’t have to force yourself to talk.” Akaashi said, blinking seriously and offering you a small smile. “I enjoy your company as is.”
Akaashi walks beside you - he is silent. Yet, for the first time, the silence doesn’t bother you.
And oh. There is comfort in his silence.
Where others’ felt tense and frustrating, Akaashi’s silence felt normal. His presence does not leave with the sound of his voice, no, instead, it only seems to solidify - because Akaashi Keiji doesn’t need to speak to say that he’s there.
The two of you end up in front of a couple stingrays, you can’t help but put your hands against the glass, marveling at the way they glide through the water. One of them swooped upwards and you can’t help but giggle at the seemingly smiling face of the animal. Your eyes followed it as it swam around.
When you turn back to Akaashi, he is smiling. “You finally look happy.” He said.
A dark blush rose from your neck - you don’t know if he knew how his words have affected you, or if he even knows how he sounded but you don’t speak of it. You simply bask in the moment, part of you registers this as a date, but the more rational part of you labeled it as platonic. You decide to ignore them both, instead, you simply walk with him along the lit path of the dark aquarium. All around you are silhouettes of other people, a thousand buzzing voices tuned out by Akaashi’s presence.
He, alone, is enough to draw your attention even as he did nothing to get it.
Soon enough, you stood by the edge of a dolphin show, watching with wonder as trainers guide and instruct three dolphins to play around. You don’t mind the way that the water splashes on your new outfit, nor the noise of the other visitors. Beside you, Akaashi watches, as well.
One of the dolphins practically flies out of the water, making you slap his arm excitedly as you point towards it. Akaashi only chuckles - he doesn’t mind the way that you’re acting, letting you do as you wish.
And when the show is over and the dolphins swim freely, Akaashi is the one who holds you back from touching them when they get close - when you pout at him he only says, “It’s unpredictable.”
You’re quick to get over it, going over instead to a penguin enclosure, where workers come and let you feed the penguins. You’re quick to wear the gloves, throwing fish just a few feet from where you both were, watching in amazement as the penguins waddle and swarm at the food. You look over to grin at him, “Can you take a picture?”
Akaashi nodded, pulling out his phone to capture pictures of you and your antics around the aquarium. Soon, you both end up under glass again, looking up at the fish that swim by.
“Look! It’s a hammerhead shark!” You smiled, watching it swim up above you both.
Suddenly, you feel his hand close over yours, he pulls you away from a group of visitors you were about to collide with. “Ah, sorry.” You smiled sheepishly at them. When they’re gone, you thank Akaashi, who only nodded.
You don’t comment on it when he keeps on holding your hand - why would you?
As you look around and take your own pictures, Akaashi is the one who tugs you in a certain direction to avoid you getting in an accident. Your mind is aware of your surroundings - after the first time, your brain becomes more alert in order to not embarrass yourself and yet, you let him. You let Akaashi hold your hand, directing you where to go even if you knew it.
A part of you warms at the amount of care the simple gesture showed.
The time to leave comes, but instead of parting ways, you let him walk the both of you to a small cafe near the aquarium. You don’t mind that as he does, his hands still keep themselves intertwined with yours
Your skin flushes at each squeeze or tug of his concern.
He squeezes your hand by the crosswalk just as the lights turn red and the cars stop, holding your hand in a hold that is secure, yet comfortable - he didn’t hold your hand like the bruising grip of your parents, or the loose grip of your laughing friends. He held your hand. He held your hand.
He opens the door for you when you get there, letting you sit as he leaves to get your orders. It is then that he leaves your hand unoccupied. And when he went away, you clutch your hand to your chest.
Akaashi Keiji holds your hand once and your heart thrums in his name.
No? His care, then.
After all, it was Akaashi Keiji who cared enough about you to ask where you were when you were absent in school. "Are you okay?" He asked over the phone.
You sniffle, the cold has lessened but the ache in your body remained, "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little bit under the weather."
After school hours, you are surprised to see multiple notifications of texts from him. When you open them, you giggle at the sight of photographs of his notes (thoughtfully separated by subject) and a text listing a to-do list of things you need to catch up on.
You smile and text him, 'Thank you :D'
Your phone dings. He replies, 'You're welcome.'
Still no? Then maybe his passion.
Akaashi Keiji's passion burns silently. It's there, but it doesn't spread like a wildfire. Instead, it's a well-kept flame that never dies.
You step into the gym, looking around curiously.
You sit by the benches, the sight of volleyball and players aren't new but this sight of Akaashi is. Akaashi's gentle hands seem a little more aggressive in court. His eyes seemed a little sharper and calculative as he made quick judgments of who to set to and how to fool the enemy into making a mistake.
You're completely taken by the sight of it.
Akaashi doesn't scream out motivation to his teammates, but his actions are loud enough. You can barely keep yourself seated, the Bento box you spent hours making feel heavier in your hands.
A whistle blows as both teams breathe heavily. Your heart sinks when you see Akaashi's team panting as the other team celebrates.
Akaashi walks off at the same time as the others do.
You're quick to stand and go after him. When you catch up, he's scowling slightly in front of a vending machine, watching the drink drop. It melts away at the first sound of your footsteps.
He turns his head and looks at you when you call out to him. You fumble with your words, "Uhm- thank you for the notes. I, uh, made this for you." You said, extending the Bento Box towards him.
He takes it hesitantly. "You didn't have to."
You respond, "I wanted to."
You walk with him to the cafeteria, where you both sit down to start eating.
"Are you okay?" You ask. It feels a little awkward.
Akaashi looks at you, "Of course." The tight grip he has on his chopsticks is enough to let you know how he truly felt.
You watch him carefully, trying to see if he liked it.
He doesn't show his emotions obviously but you see the small jump on his eyebrow when he ate the egg rolls you made, or the light, quick purse of his lips when he sees the slightly burnt sausages. "If you don't like it, you don't have to eat it." You said.
Akaashi Keiji stares at you as he puts another sausage in his mouth.
You fiddle with your fingers, that is when he asked, "Did you get hurt while making this?" You look down at your bandaged fingers and quickly hide them under the table.
"No?" You said, flinching when it comes as a question instead of a statement.
Akashi blinks. You relent. "Fine. Yes I did."
He sighed but didn't say anything else.
And yet, before lunch break ended, Akaashi sat by you, changing your sloppily applied bandages with new ones. "You have to disinfect the cuts first before you bandage them." He reminds you, "And next time, be more careful."
When he's done, he places another carton of banana milk into your hands, "Here, it'll make you feel better."
By the time school is over, your eyes wander to see where Akaashi might've gone. You ask around, no one really knows either - this is why you hated Thursdays, because Thursdays meant having only one morning class with Akaashi. You text him, waiting for a reply as your feet continue to wander.
He does not reply.
Finally, you end up by the gym. You jump slightly at the sound of balls hitting the ground. When you step inside, you see Akaashi, standing only a few feet away from the net, setting for people who weren't there.
"Akaashi?"
Your voice breaks his concentration, making him tense. He caught the ball in his hands, looking over to you, asking what you needed.
You asked him, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he replied. A part of you knew that he wasn't.
So you walk in, false confidence draped on your shoulders as you asked, "Do you want help?"
Akaashi is hesitant, but he accepts.
Soon, you are throwing balls in his direction, his body moving almost on autopilot as he keeps on setting again and again and again. By the time you're both done, the sun begins to threaten that it will leave entirely, giving you only minutes of sunlight before the two of you finally make your way out.
"I'll walk you home," he said.
You shake your head. Though the two of you go towards the same initial direction, you know that when you reach the third intersection, you'd have to part. His house is to the left of the third intersection, yours is to the right of the fifth. If he goes to yours, he'd have to walk for thirty minutes more and you knew he was tired. You knew he was slowly burning out.
So you said, "You don't have to."
He replied, "I want to."
You couldn't find it in yourself to say no to that.
The two of you stop by a small shop.
You buy him strawberry milk the same time he bought you banana milk.
So maybe you don't hate Thursdays as much anymore. Because now, Thursdays meant late volleyball with Akaashi, followed by a night walk and banana milk.
Ah. When did you start liking banana milk?
Maybe it's all of the above.
Before you knew it, you only have a year left before college comes so you stand beneath a cherry blossom tree, cursing under your breath because fuck, this is so cliche.
It’s spring and everything is blooming - everyone is confessing. It feels so stupid to do the same but your heart is thumping like crazy and everything else feels irrelevant. Who cares if it’s cliche? Who cares if it’s been done before? Who cares if it’s obvious?
It’s your feelings and you have the right to do with it as you wish so when Akaashi comes into view, everything melts away. Suddenly, it’s just him and you under a cherry blossom tree.
You know that he knows - after all, how could he not?
And yet, you still spit it out, the words that feel so big on your tongue. “I like you.” You said, screwing your eyes shut as you try to ask your heart to calm down because if not, you might just pass out right then and there. “I like you so much.” You breathe, your lungs stagger and ache as you try to take in oxygen.
Akaashi Keiji replies. “Why?” You open your eyes, it’s then that you see the cards of pinks and glitters tucked crumpled on his pockets, and the plastic bag of chocolates he was holding. Ah. There were those that came before you.
You stammer - you didn’t think of a poem to tell him how much you like him or a beautiful metaphor that illustrates how you feel. “I-” You stumble over your words, “I just- I just like you.”
“When I’m with you, I’m comfortable and I feel accepted and I haven’t felt this way before.” You said, you feel all tongue-tied again, as if each syllable is stuck in your throat and you have to force them out each time. “I love your silence, when I’m with you I don’t feel pressured to be someone I’m not and I… I appreciate the way you treat and care for me.”
Your answer is all over the place, if you knew, you would have memorized an essay that answered him fluently and properly, you would construct a message that had clear points, you wouldn’t stutter or doubt if your message is coming through. If you knew he would ask ‘Why?’, you would have written a thousand words to tell him why you liked him but you didn’t.
So you conjure all the ways you liked him - “I like it when we touch, because your hands feel warm and soft and when you held my hand that day we went to the aquarium, I couldn't help but want you to keep on holding on to me. I’m jealous of all the girls who had the courage to confess to you before me- I envy their strength to look you in the eyes and tell you ‘I like you’ because I’m confessing to you right now but I can’t look you in the eyes because I’m embarrassed and I feel underprepared.” You spoke quickly, looking down on the ground as you gripped the box of homemade cupcakes you baked for him specifically for today.
“I want to give you something better because now I see what the others gave and it’s all so expensive but I- I don’t have enough money to afford that much and I never really had a talent for writing heartfelt letters because they all end up cheesy but I- I wanted to do it for you. So instead, I made you cupcakes! But I don’t think you’ll like them because- because it’s my first time making cupcakes of this flavor because I know you like this but I’ve never made it before but I wanted to make it for you but Akaashi I’m so nervous that I’m speaking the first thing that comes in my mind. So please, if you’re going to reject me, please just reject me already-” You were going to look up to look him in the eyes when he cut you off.
“May I kiss you?” He asked softly.
His words are enough to make your brain short-circuit.
“What?” You asked - you must have heard him wrong.
Akaashi repeats his question, “May I kiss you?”
You stammer - what even is there to say? You respond a little quicker, tongue tripping on words, "Y-yes!"
Akaashi Keiji leans in, you freeze. His hands cupped both sides of your cheeks, you have a second to register how he drops the plastic bag filled with chocolate treats. You have another to panic about whether or not your breath smells good and whether or not you should open your mouth or keep it closed.
Akaashi Keij kisses you under a cherry blossom tree and shit, it's fucking cliche but you love it - because that moment, that fraction in time is strictly just yours and his. It didn't matter that this was probably done before, that multiple students have probably kissed under the same tree… what mattered is that Akaashi Keiji's lips are on your own and your first kiss tastes like chocolates and lip balm.
Akaashi pulls away, you finally dare to look at him and your heart skips a beat at the sight of his flushed cheeks and the way his breaths seem labored. He is just as breathless as you are.
His hands are still holding your cheeks.
You feel them tremble against your skin.
Before anything else could happen, impulsivity pushes you to pull him in again by the collar of his uniform. Until his lips are flush against yours for the second time because once is not enough.
Your grip on his clothes tighten.
Ah, you're probably going to buy chocolate-flavored lip balm soon.
Maybe it's something entirely different.
Being with Akaashi means a good morning text by the time you wake up and a goodnight text before you sleep. The sight of it is enough to make you kick your feet in the air, heart acting like drums as they beat against your hollowed ribs.
Being with Akaashi means little study dates in the library, tucked in some corner where no one will interrupt you both. He leaned towards you, voice patient when he said, “Now you have to convert it to moles.” He nods along when you do it correctly, but is quick to correct you when you get it wrong. And in turn, you help him review for tests you knew he could do on his own.
“But I want to do this with you.” He said, when you mention that he can probably review this by himself. Akaashi stares at you. As you stare into his blue eyes, you realize that it’s really easy to fall a little deeper, until you’re neck deep and your heart swells.
You smile. “Okay… let’s continue then.”
You remember that the first time the two of you decided to go on a real, official date, it’s in a botanical garden. The coming of Spring has driven the both of you to visit one. That is what gets you on a train going to Kyoto, your lips curved into a smile as you show him the destination - Kyoto Botanical Garden. You’ve already told him about this, knowing that he would appreciate having the chance to make a loose plan the two of you can follow to make the most of the day.
Akaashi doesn’t say much, he only says that he’s looking forward to it, as well. A part of you is nervous that he’s pretending - ah, maybe this is an elaborate prank and Akaashi Keiji is much more cruel than you think - but before you can overthink it any further, Akaashi clamps his hand on top of yours, intertwining them securely.
You lean on his shoulder.
Akaashi tenses.
Immediately, you move to pull away, only to have his unoccupied hand pat your head, gently guiding it back on his shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he murmurs softly, “it’s my first time being like this, so I didn’t expect it.”
“Oh… it’s fine.” You smile to yourself, giving his hand a little squeeze.
The world falls silent. You think to yourself, ah, could this get any better?
Akaashi turns and places a soft kiss on top of your head and you think - yes, yes it can.
The two of you arrive at the garden at exactly 11:07 AM. The moment you do, you find a good place to snap a picture of both of your shoes. It’s followed by a selfie near the gates, making you glad that you brought your selfie stick along.
Akaashi steps close to you as the two of you pose for the picture, his hand finding your waist as natural as the leaves falling from nearby trees. And perhaps a part of you falls along with them as you feel his hold. You’re quick to take pictures, walking around and talking with him as you did.
Your feet lead you to the Rhododendron Garden. You feel your breath taken away by the sight of the flowers. You lead him nearer, taking pictures of the pink, red, and orange flowers. Akaashi’s hands are the ones who stop you from touching them.
“They can cause skin irritation.” He says simply.
You turn to him. “How did you know?”
He looks back towards you, “Research.”
A soft chuckle leaves your lips and you tease him, “Wow, I didn’t know you were such a nerd.” You stuck your tongue out to him playfully, making him huff a little. “Was it for an assignment? Or a project?”
“No.” He answered, holding your hands again.
“Then for what?” You smiled.
“For you.” He murmurs. “Plants and flowers are beautiful, yes, but I didn’t want to risk you getting harmed if you accidentally touch or eat one.”
“Eat one?” You asked. “You think I would eat a flower?”
“...yes.” He said, almost slowly as his eyes flicked to the side for a moment before his sight trails back to you. “I simply want to keep you safe and sound-” His explanation is cut off by the sound of your laugh, loud and kind of boisterous. He looked dumbstruck - a part of him had expected you to get offended… a part of him did not realize your laugh sounded this beautiful.
“Fine, whatever.” You chuckle, trying to brush it off and ignore the blush that has risen to your cheeks. “Whatever you say, I guess.” And if you hold his hand a little tighter, Akaashi speaks nothing of it. Instead, he gives your hand a small squeeze.
You venture towards the Rose Gardens, past a section of the Botanical which was fashioned to look European. You bend down a little, taking photographs of the flowers. "They're beautiful." You smile, eyes following the way they sway in the wind.
You don't see the way he looks at you - you are far too distracted by the roses to see it.
He says, "Yes, they are."
His gaze burns.
You end up walking along the central lawn, walking into a homey cafe as Akaashi holds your hand. “Lunch first, then we go to…” You scroll along your phone, where you have a map of the place saved. "The Japanese Gardens, right?”
Akaashi nods as the two of you set down your things. You sit in front of each other, quickly deciding on what you’ll get. Soon, he leaves you to get your orders, you stay seated, waiting patiently. When he gets back, he carefully places your Udon Noodle Soup in front of you, followed by a glass of water. On his side, he places a bowl of Katsudon. Followed by this is a plate of gyoza, which came with a small container for the sauce.
He smiles, “Be sure to eat well.” You can only nod as the two of you start eating, hands gripping your chopsticks securely. Somewhere in the middle, Akaashi catches you giving small glances towards his Katsudon, without hesitation, he picks up a piece and extends his hand out towards you. “It’s tasty, try it.”
You hesitate, before deciding to eat it. You lean in, taking it from his chopsticks and chewing slowly, nodding as he asked if you liked it. Your eyes meet. You are still leaning in a little and as if impulsivity possessed you, you decide to rise a little, meeting his lips with your own - and somehow, his Katsudon tastes a little better when it comes from his lips.
Akaashi chuckles, looking away a little as a soft blush rose from his neck.
The two of you eat quietly after that, stealing glances, sharing portions of your food as the two of you take a quick rest from walking. Deciding to take your time finishing the portion of gyoza left, Akaashi rose from his seat, taking the one beside you, instead. You spend the rest of that time talking softly, laughing and taking cute little pictures. You take a note to make a scrapbook soon - it’s the first time you’ve ever felt like this and every single part of you longs to simply capture this very moment and live in it forever.
The two of you leave soon after, making your way towards the Japanese Gardens.
He holds your hand as you walk, his fingers slotting between your own and you can’t help but wish that moments like these lasted for eternity.
Akaashi walks you home after your date. He leans towards you, gently pushing his lips against yours. When he pulls back, you have to blink multiple times to get back to your proper senses. He gives you a small, transparent box. You look up and take it from his hands, carefully holding the box as you gazed at the potted, succulent plant inside the box.
“I bought it for you while you were away for a bit.” He said, “I hope you take care of it.”
“Of course I will.” You smiled. “Thank you, ‘kaashi.”
Akaashi smiles, kissing you again, just as soft as the last time. “You’re always welcome. Let’s do this again soon.” He said after pulling away. You nodded, making him smile a little wider. “Goodnight.” He said, followed by a sweet, soft murmur of your name - and it was as if each syllable became priceless when he said them.
“Goodnight, Akaashi.” You smile.
He's so easy to love, isn't he?
Akaashi Keiji shares one of his earphones with you while the two of you sit next to each other. The first song he plays is always a love song, followed by whatever song is next on the playlist. You actually have your own playlist with him, titled 'A Dream Come True', each song was the answer to a question, making you chuckle as you began to compare and contrast your tastes in music. It's a bit cliche, but it's true, isn't it?
Akaashi Keiji always makes sure you're prepared for tests - because he knows that sometimes, you run low on motivation. So he brings you an energy drink, maybe a cup of coffee, sometimes even a whole meal. He stays up with you when you study your lessons, helping you out when you need it.
“Here,” he said, quietly as you both sat in your room, “I usually dissuade you from drinking these but I know you need it.” He sighed as he handed you the energy drink. He sits beside you, opening his notebook as he studies beside you again. As you drink, you take it upon yourself to hold his left hand, watching him scribble notes and make neat markings on the book he was reading.
Akaashi simply squeezes your hand lightly as he did, giving you brief glances when you move around before putting his attention back to studying.
Akaashi Keiji cooks with you. When you hit your first anniversary, he took it upon himself to invite you to his house while his family was away. There, the two of you spent the day making ramen from scratch.
He stands beside you as you massaged the dough, cutting up vegetables and pork as you did. Soon enough, you’re splitting the mass of dough, laughing as you both struggled a little to split it evenly. “If you end up with more noodles than me, I’m stealing your bowl.” You laughed, making him shake his head with a smile as he brought the bowl of flour closer.
You both start making sheets made up of the dough, folding and dusting it with flour before beginning to cut it to make noodles. "You're not cutting it evenly." He chuckled, looking up from his own noodles, which you saw were cut evenly.
"Whatever, perfectionist." You roll your eyes, though you do give a little more effort in evenly cutting them.
It doesn’t take long before you’re sitting next to him, assembling your ramen carefully. "Hey! That's my portion!" You gasp, stealing the piece of meat from him and hitting his hand lightly as he laughed. You place it carefully on top of your noodles, smiling as it all comes together.
He places a small container of chili powder near you, "Here, I know you like it spicy."
You smile, leaning in to kiss him briefly. "Thanks, you know me so well." He chuckled, watching you carefully sprinkle in some.
He puts your bowls next to each other, carefully placing chopsticks on top of neatly folded tissues. "Let's take a picture." He murmured. You snap quick pictures - both of the food and of each other - putting it into the gallery collection labeled as '1st Anniversary'.
You start eating in the living room, opening the television and putting on a movie as you eat together.
He just feels perfect, doesn’t he?
It's been four years since then, college has come, and it threatens to split you apart.
"I can't this week," he said - how many times has it been?
You purse your lips, hand tightening your grip on the phone, "Again?" The question slips out of your lips like the falling of droplets. Small. Quick. Almost unheard. "You promised you'd come with me this time." A part of you is quick to give up - the Museum will open up again, don’t worry, don't worry - but the rest is starting to scurry away from him and your hands have started to ache as you hold onto strings that kept you together.
"I'm sorry," how many times have you heard that before?, "But this is a very important project, I can't risk passing it late."
More important than me? You almost bit back, more important than our 4th anniversary? You do not say it. You cannot. So you keep your true thoughts locked in the darkness of your mind and you say to him, "Yeah. Okay. Sure. We'll reschedule, then?"
"Yes, I'm really sorry-" you cut him off before he can speak your name, you knew that if he did, you would crumble and break and from the way you see it, Akaashi cannot risk being distracted by anything… by anyone.
It is the first time you ever missed an anniversary.
"It's okay." You said. You grip the phone a little tighter. You stare almost blankly at your computer screen. The phone call ends before you realize - you both do not say I love you anymore, the phrase has gone foreign on your tongue, like an unknown language you hear for the first time. And even your ears, which used to translate his playlists to that phrase; or your skin which used to shiver and recognize his touch as his way of saying it; or your lips which smile at the taste of his unspoken words - they neither hear, feel, nor taste it anymore.
You place your phone away from sight. You do not wish to see it.
A vain feeling of burning grief rises from the embers of a broken heart - it threatens to choke you and leave your throat bruised and burnt from its touch. You almost want to beg for it to do so. You have a feeling that it would feel much better than this.
Loneliness. Your mind labeled the feeling - the emotion born from being alone; the feeling of being abandoned.
Your eyes trail to your computer screen. There, the sight of him makes your gut curl and tie in knots, the Akaashi you knew from two years ago smiles at you. The dimple on his cheek stays the same, so does the ruffle of his dark hair and the clearness of his blue eyes - the Akaashi you knew has gone static.
Akaashi is smiling, wearing the outfit he wore during one of your dates in an art gallery - a simple, beige cardigan and loose pants, his glasses resting on the bridge of his nose. The sight of him from your computer screen looked so real it coaxes tears out of your eyes. Your dislike of drawing realism is dwarfed when it is him you draw. For how can it ever go against the love you have for him which always seems to overflow onto the spaces of your hollowed ribs?
It has been too long since you last saw each other and clumsy phone calls between classes or before you both go to sleep is not enough.
It is as if life has stolen him from you and dangles his image far from your reach yet close to your eyes - you see him in the darkness behind your eyelids, there, he has the chance to let you lay your head on his shoulder, the taste of banana milk sweet on your tongues, his hand holds yours and you are warm. So warm that you melt into his arms but now, in the cold and in the darkness of your dorm room, you are running a fever and your soul, which yearns for him screams his name but he does not respond in kind.
Instead, he says I'm sorry.
Oh how you've begun to despise that phrase.
You are left there on your bed, curled and crying and despising your reaction because at this point, you should have gotten used to it.
How many times has he left you like this, unknowing that it was a time you needed him most?
But then again… what did you expect?
The two of you have aged, you do not live just thirty minutes away anymore, instead, he lives two cities over, attending his dream college as you attend yours. You both chose this, saying that it will work, saying that you will make it work - but that did not last long.
Somewhere near the end of first year, your weekend dates have been forgotten; by the second, even scheduled dates are canceled and rescheduled, only to get canceled again. Now here, on your third, phone calls are filled with I miss you yet followed by I'm sorry. A part of you hates him for saying that, yet hates you more for sometimes doing the same.
It is as if life is determined to keep you apart, the same way fate strung you together, making you live half an hour apart from childhood to your teenage years yet never letting you meet until highschool - but ah. What if you two were never truly built to last?
Your nails dig into your skin, threatening to break into it and make you bleed. How many times have you done this to yourself? Hugging your knees to your chest, asking where it went wrong. You both tried didn't you? You both wanted this to work, didn't you?
Oh. What if everything is going wrong because you are the only one who wants this now?
You think. You think. You think.
What if, behind the closed phone screen, after the hung up calls and quick goodbyes, someone else wraps their arms around his shoulders like you used to. And it is them that whisper comfort in his ears and what if he is only waiting for the right way, for the right time to end it?
What if, when he says “I’m sorry”, he is only waiting for you to realize the silent goodbyes that follow that phrase?
Akaashi wouldn't do that to you… right?
You bite your lip, a part of you tries to pull you back but it cannot. You sink. In this falling, there is only darkness - you cannot envision Akaashi to be there to catch you, why hope that he will when you know that he is not there?
But you trust him, don't you?
And you love him, don't you?
You feel paralyzed on your bed, unable to move and unable to think of things other than the fact that he is not there. You felt as if you were going crazy.
Your roommates have come and go to tell you to eat, but your lips only move to give a half-hearted excuse that you aren’t hungry yet - in truth, you have no appetite at all, even as your stomach churns and eats itself from the inside.
There’s a knock on your door. A part of you wishes it is him. The rest know it’s not.
It’s your roommate, they tell you that you should eat soon, it's late and you shouldn't skip dinner. "I know you're on a diet," they said, "but you haven't eaten properly in weeks. I don't want you to get sick, okay? Please eat dinner soon."
"I will." You respond - you will not. You hear their footsteps retreat, making you close your eyes as you try to fall back asleep.
But really, why do you love him?
You wake to the sound of knocking. Someone asks if they can come in. You grumble and say whatever comes into mind - "Leave me alone, go away." They knock again and apologize, and finally you relent - "Fine, come in, whatever." You huddle a little closer to your blankets, curling up as you hear the door open and their footsteps are heard as they walk in.
They close the door. You hear a soft click as they lock it.
They sit on your bed, you feel it dip under their weight. At this point, you can't find it in yourself to care if they end up being a serial killer or whatever - a thought that you'd probably regret in the afterlife, if ever.
They brush a hand through your hair, before you hear a sigh. They lift your blanket, settling beside you and putting a loose arm around your waist. They kiss your hair and come a little closer.
They utter your name and ask if you're asleep - you cannot find it in yourself to reply. So you pretend. You act like you're asleep, even if you knew that they probably know you aren't.
He doesn't tell you that he loves you.
When you truly wake hours later, it's near the afternoon, you sit up and feel their arm fall from its place on your waist. You look to the side and see him right there - Akaashi Keiji, warm and asleep as he breathed softly.
"So it wasn't a dream." You mumble to yourself. "You're really here."
You can't help but reach out to touch him. Your touch alone is enough to stir him awake, his eyes fluttering open and immediately focusing on you. His soft utterance of your name is enough to make you draw back. Just hours before, you had so much to say, but now that he was here, your parched throat could not bear to say anything.
“What happened?” He asked, getting up from the bed and holding your hand gently. “I hear you haven’t eaten properly in weeks.”
You sigh and shake your head, "It's nothing. It's late, Akaashi, you should get back to your dorm."
Akaashi shakes his head, looping his hand around your wrist and pulling you back. "Wait! I… I wanted to talk." He said. "About us."
Ah. Here it is.
The thing you have been dreading - the coiled dread in your gut wakes, slithering up your spine until it curls around your lungs and heart. "What is it?" You ask.
"Why don't we go to the living room? I'll cook you up a meal as we talk." He said.
"Not here. The others-"
"I asked for a favor. They're out right now. For the entire day." He said. "I know you like privacy and I didn't really think you would be up for going out."
You nod hesitantly. "Fine. Let's get this over with."
You sit on the chair in front of the counter, he grabs the apron from the rack and begins to talk as he opens the refrigerator. "Is Omurice okay with you?"
"Yes but- actually, they cooked last night, there's probably still some leftovers from dinner. I can just eat that." You said, rising from your seat as the ache in your bones started to come back.
"Sit down," he said - it's the first time you've ever heard him sound so forceful. "Please… just… sit down, okay?" He turns towards you and smiles, "Let me take care of you."
He doesn't buy you your favorite meals.
He grabs a chopping board as he takes out the ingredients, along with the leftover pork chops from last night. He heats it up as he begins to chop portions of carrots and potatoes. "I'm not sure where to begin," he said.
"You're doing just fine- after that you just have to make fried rice then-" Your rambles are cut off.
"You know that that's not what I meant." He sighed.
"Well maybe I don't want to talk about it." You said, "Maybe I'm not ready to let you go- Akaashi, we've been together for four years, I'm not going to let you leave me like this." You look down, trying to hide the tears forming in your eyes.
"Leave you?" He asked. "Why would I leave you?"
You look up, "Is that… not what you're here for?"
Akaashi blinks at you, opening his mouth as he tries to conjure the right words, "I'm not- I didn't come here to break up with you."
You sat up a little straighter, the tears in your eyes backtracking and retreating back into their ducts. "Then what are you here for?"
"To apologize." He said, "And to talk about what we want to do next - if anything, I've been anxious you'll break up with me." He turned back to the vegetables he was cutting, his eyes blinking rapidly as he tried to blink the forming tears away. And perhaps he is just as heart broken as you have been.
"I couldn't come yesterday because of the project so I wanted to make it up to you today. Then I heard you weren't eating well so I came late into the night yesterday as soon as I finished the project but well… you were already resting, I think." He said, "I'm sorry that I slept next to you last night, I know I didn't ask for your permission. I just- I just couldn't help it, I guess."
He chuckles. You watch him mess up a little as he wiped at his forehead - he's nervous. You've never seen him act like this before. He opens the stove and adds a slab of butter into a pan, letting it heat up for a bit before he adds cooked rice. It's followed by the vegetables he cut up. As he cooked, he said, "I wanted to make it up to you. Everything that I've been lacking and missing-"
"It wasn't your fault." Your mouth is quick to say it, even as your insides churn in glee as he begins to apologize.
"It was." He said, "I should've made some time for us, like you were doing. I'm sorry that I've been selfish for the past few months."
"You were chasing your dreams - who was I to stop you?" You asked.
He says your name. Softly. Gently. As if your name will break on his tongue if he says it any differently. "It's okay," he said, "I already know my faults. And besides… I don't want you to think there's something wrong with you or that I've fallen out of love with you or anything like that because I haven't."
He plates the fried rice, setting it on the counter. He breaks two eggs into a bowl, adding a little salt before beating it.
What passes is a moment of silence. You watch, eyes trained on the fact that he is here - how many nights have you lain awake, wishing for the stars to bring him back to you?
You look down, there is a voice in your head that says you should break up with him - make him feel as desperate as you did, it said, hurt him as he has hurt you. And yet, you don't. Perhaps you love him too much to do so.
Sometimes love is letting go, the voice said, it questions you, what makes you think he won't just neglect you again? You are as expendable as the eggshells he broke and got rid off moments ago, what makes you think he will keep on loving you as he used to?
You play with your hands, heart beating a little quicker and harsher against the bones of your ribs. What if he finds someone else? It will hurt more if you continue, just leave now - that way it will hurt once then never again.
Do not tell me that he's worth it - do you even know if he still finds worth in you?
"I know I'm pretty late but if it's okay with you… do you think that maybe we could try again? I promise that I'll be better this time." He said, setting down the plate of food in front of you, freshly cooked, and looking delicious yet your stomach tightens and churns at the sight of it - perhaps it is not food you hungered for.
He unties his apron, hooking it on the rack again as he goes around the counter to step closer towards you. He speaks your name but his voice is muffled by your own heartbeat and suddenly, you feel frozen as you say on that seat. Doubt creeps and breathes onto your neck, raising goosebumps and fear of being left - Akaashi speaks your name again but the tremble of your heartbeat does not cease. In fact, it grows louder.
It is the first time you felt alone even while in his presence.
He will find someone to replace you, the voices said, look at him. Top of his class and soon to graduate, blessed with good looks and a nice voice - men and women will flock to him, do you think you'll stand a chance?
But he loves me, you think to yourself, Akaashi loves me.
But does he? Tell me. Does he really?
Your hands clench against each other, almost threatening to break your knuckles until Akaashi's hand covers your own. Your hold on yourself loosens a little. His hands move. The chair scrapes against the floor. Suddenly, his arms are around you.
"It's okay." He murmured, kissing the top of your head, "I'm right here. I'm not going to leave." It was as if he knew what was going on inside your head, as if he heard what doubt and anxiety had whispered into your ears. "It's okay, I've got you. Cry if you need to, I'll stay as long as you need me to."
The tears come like the makings of a waterfall, dripping from your eyes and down along your cheeks leaving tear tracks on your skin.
"I'm sorry," you said, "I'm so sorry, I don't know why I'm crying I just-" Akaashi shakes his head, wiping at your tears as he gives you a small, worried smile.
"It's okay," he said, giving your temple a soft kiss, "It's going to be alright." He rubs your back as you let your tears fall. "I'm sorry, my dear," he murmurs, holding you a little tighter, "I didn't mean to make you feel abandoned."
You cling to him a little tighter, there is a silence in your head that threatens to break as soon as you unhold him so you let yourself unravel instead - perhaps, you will find solace in the sound of your own breaking. You spend what seemed to be a thousand years right there in his arms, but even that is not enough to fill your heart's chasm.
Your hands feel weak even as they grip him tightly, you cannot help but cry as he carefully rubs your back. He treats you as if you would shatter right there in his hold should he touch you too roughly. You don’t know whether to hate or thank him for it.
After some time, you are able to tear yourself away from him, sniffling as you finally settle and slumped down on your seat. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you with all of this.” You said.
Akaashi shook his head, gently placing a kiss on your tired knuckles again. “It’s fine, dear. It wasn’t your fault.” He smiles lightly against your skin, “Why don’t you eat for now? You’re probably still quite tired, so we can rest for a bit before talking about this again.”
You give him seconds of silence before you say, “Okay.”
He hands you the cutlery, watching with a soft smile on his face as he sees you smile slightly as you break the egg on top, watching the half-cooked yolk run along the fried rice. You give him a look, before pushing him lightly towards the container holding the cutleries. “Eat with me.” You say, “I won’t be able to finish it all.”
You pierce the heated piece of porkchop, bringing it to his lips as you say, “You need food, too.”
Akaashi sighs, before he eats it and gets his own spoon and fork. “As long as you eat well, as well.” He said, watching you eat a spoonful before he eats, too. He sits right next to you, silently eating, yet somehow making sure that you ate more than him.
“Let’s go out. On a date, I mean.” You said - impulsive and sudden.
“Are you sure?” He asked.
“Yeah. We can drop by your dorm so you can change, then we can visit the park or something.”
Afterwards there is silence as you take a quick shower while he washed the dishes, but as you stand under the water, the soft warmth is not enough to comfort you. As soon as you are out of his reach, the whispering voices come back. He’s lying, it said, like the others did. You feel tears swell up from their coves again, your fingers twiddling with each other as you watch the soap suds get washed away by the running water.
He will leave when the time comes, maybe when you’re angry or while you argue, they say, so that he’s not the bad guy. Your hands claw at your arms again - ah, you should leave the shower soon. You should, you should. Yet your legs do not move. You feel stuck as the whispers turn to statements - he will leave again, until you understand what his leaving means and break it off with him. He doesn’t say it but he wants to be free of you.
So you ask yourself - what can you do to make him stay?
How can you convince him to stay?
You look down at yourself, trying to ignore the forming lump in your throat.
Your throat constricts, you do not have words left to say other than your woes and you’re sure it will only push him away. What if he really leaves?
But what else is there to give?
A knock on the bathroom door snaps you away from falling deep into those thoughts again. Akaashi spoke your name before he said, “You should step out soon, you might get sick if you stay there for too long.”
You say that you’ll step out soon but your mind is still trying to think of something - of anything - that might convince him to stay. It was as if your mind had forgotten the words he uttered of not wanting to leave you, perhaps you have been feeling lonely for too long that you have begun to cling to a person who will not leave you.
Or perhaps you just don’t believe him and his words anymore.
You wrap a towel around yourself, holding it against your body as you step out. You open your closet, putting on your clothes and buttoning up your shirt only to hear your door open. Akaashi curses loudly as he fumbles with the doorknob, and as you turn to look at him, you see the way his eyes are cast downwards, cheeks flushed red and his hands trembling a little from the panic. You didn’t hear what he wanted to say - nor can you find it in yourself to care.
This.
You stride towards him, holding his wrists and you say, softly, “Don’t go.”
He hesitated in answering and you can’t help but pull him into your room, locking the door behind the two of you as you basically crowd him onto the bed. He falls on the mattress, settling to sit against the headboard, as if he wanted to run from you. You begin unbuttoning your clothes, letting it fall to your elbows as you shrug it off.
Perhaps if you can make him happy now, he will stay with you forever.
You see his flushed face as he tries to keep on looking away and you say - almost a demand - “Look at me, Keiji.” His blue eyes flicker towards you, blinking quickly as you step closer, crawling into bed and trapping him between your limbs. His breaths come quick and heavy - nervous and unsure.
You settle on his lap, hands moving upwards to thumb at the edges of his clothes.
You ask, “May I?”
He doesn't even let you do what you want.
He answered, soft sighed as he spoke, “No.”
“Oh.” You say softly. He doesn’t want you. “You don’t want me.” You look away. Your hands fall, but before they could fall onto your lap, his own hands have caught them and brought them to his lips.
“I do, my dear,” He murmurs, “Trust me when I say that I do want you.” His blue eyes look up at you, “But not like this.”
“Then how do you want me?” You asked, sounding hopeful - yet for the wrong thing.
Akaashi looks up at you, thumbing and grazing his touch along the edges of your eyes. “When you’re okay, then we can do this.” He said, “But not when you’re like this… not when we are like this. I don’t want our first to be so unromantic and sad.” He offers you a soft smile, “Why don’t we just watch a movie? Or would you prefer a short nap? We can cuddle, if you’d like.”
“But this is the only thing I haven’t given yet.” You say.
Akaashi makes you look at him, “You don’t need to. I will love you regardless.”
Ah. It is the first time you ever heard him say that, isn’t it?
You can’t stop the tears that fall from your eyes and you raise your hands to sob onto your palms as you feel your soul tremble at the mere utterance of how he loves you. He loves you. Akaashi Keiji loves you.
His gentle hands pry your hands away from your face, chuckling as he leans up to kiss your tears away. You sniffle - you don’t understand why you’re crying so much but at this point, does it even matter?
At some point, he has maneuvered you to lay on top of him, his arms wrapped around your waist as your hands grip at his clothes. Your legs are tangled with each other's, your ear against his chest, listening to the sound of his heartbeat.
So… why?
"You won't leave me?" You ask.
His hands move to comb his fingers through your hair. He answers you, "Never."
"Are you sure? What if you find someone better?" You ask again. You close your eyes, exhausted from this day alone.
"That's impossible," he said simply, "There's no one in this world that equals you." He says it so seriously that you can't even remember what your doubts have whispered just an hour before.
"I love you." You say.
He responded, "I love you too."
Why him, of all people?
Years later and he kisses you at the altar, his hands cupping your cheeks as your lips meet for the billionth time.
He tastes as sweet as the first time.
In the after party, he holds your hand securely, intertwining your fingers and kissing you periodically. You giggle at this - it's one of the few times he was ever like this.
"You must've missed me a hundred times today." You say softly as you get ready for your honeymoon.
"I'll kiss you a hundred more tonight." He whispers back, smiling as you blush and push him away slightly.
"You're being stupid, Akaashi." You roll your eyes.
"Just for you, Akaashi." He winks, pulling away from you as he watches you blush a little deeper.
But then again, maybe the point isn't why but the fact that you do.
"Akana! Right here, c'mon!" You grin, clapping your hands as you cheer for your little daughter. Keiji is crouched down, bracing to catch her if she falls. Hikaru is standing on wobbly legs, holding onto your arms as he watches his twin sister take her first steps.
You hear the small patting of her feet against the hardwood floor.
Finally, she reaches you just fine, her small hands clasping on your own as she smiles. You give her a big hug, grinning as Hikaru joins in. You carry Akana to the couch, your husband following suit as he carries Hikaru.
"They're growing up too quickly." You sniffle, bouncing Akana on your leg as Keiji sits beside you, letting Hikaru cling to him as he replies with a low chuckle. "What? You don't think they're growing quickly?"
"They're still toddlers. And besides, they'll probably stay with us until they're 18, calm down." He smiled, "Don't worry, you have a lot of time with them."
He leans forward and kisses your forehead. He pulls away, beginning to play with Hikaru as he smiles.
You watch him as you hold your daughter.
So this is what love is.
Shostakovich and Aziraphale
I was thinking (and talking to @balance-of-probability endlessly) about the choice to have Shostakovich's fifth symphony feature so heavily in S2 ep 1, and how it struck me as a little odd as there are a bunch of composers Aziraphale loves mentioned in the book and Shostakovich isn't amongst them.
Backstory: In 1934, Shostakovich’s opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk premiered to huge popular acclaim, which was very briskly walked back in 1936 after the Stalinist newspaper Pravda published an article denouncing it.
Actually more than denouncing it, condemning it. It wasn’t credited but was authored by a guy called David Zaslavsky who was almost definitely scribing for Stalin himself. Lady Macbeth was banned in the USSR until 1961.
Anyway by 1936 Shostakovich had written his fourth symphony, which he withdrew from public performance until 1961 because it was more of the same thing that had made the Soviet leadership cancel Lady Macbeth – it was unconventional, anti-patriotic, and indicated that Shostakovich was a “bourgeois formalist”.
So he shelved it and started working on Symphony No. 5 which is, on the surface at least, Soviet as fuck. And that’s what we hear Aziraphale listening to in S2E1.
(Sidebar this story is told in Julian Barnes’ The Noise of Time which is either a literary wank soup or a masterpiece depending on how cranky you are when you first read it)
So basically what Dmitri Shostakovich did in those years between the fourth and fifth symphonies was something that might be familiar to S2E6 enjoyers/agonisers: he decided to toe the party line.
Kind of.
Listening to the finale of the fifth symphony (and if you want to listen along it’s the recording of Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, it’ll be called something like Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47; iv. Allegro non troppo) without the context of the rest of the symphony or in fact Shostakovich’s life is like ah yes that’s a bit of a Soviet battle anthem let’s march into Leningrad or whatever.
But it is, as critics have increasingly understood in the years since Shostakovich demurely described it as “a Soviet artist's no-nonsense response to fair criticism”, dripping with irony. This man reviled the Stalinist line on art and life – he takes the Soviet anthem and turns it into a sort of fucked up evil clown march. The whole thing gives me this vibe:
Tumblr media
(gif from @goodomensedit)
There’s a lot of stuff about that time in Shostakovich’s life that is extremely hard to verify. There’s a “memoir” which is for sure at least partially fabricated called Testimony in which there’s an alleged quote from our man saying that final movement is a parody, that “it's as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, "Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing", and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering, "Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing"."
Whether or not Shostakovich said that (some of his friends who outlived him support that reading, including Rostropovich who conducted a bunch of his work) you can definitely hear it in the piece and you can definitely see how it gives us a clue into the decision Aziraphale makes at the end of the season.
What Shostakovich had to decide back in the 1930s was whether he would a) flee to somewhere like the US, where many other artists targeted by Stalin went; b) stay and become a public nuisance, leading almost definitely to an off-the-books execution; or c) become a party-approved Soviet Artist and hope for change. Even nudge it along in a subtle way. Even get on the inside and work to bring it down. We don’t know how true that was for old mate Dmitri and we don’t yet know exactly what Aziraphale has planned. But yeah:
tl;dr: Shostakovich 🤝 Aziraphale
          Staying inside a rancid and destructive militarised culture in the hope that it can change
Hello! May I ask ❤️ 12,11 and 17 for Jade? Thanks!
Tumblr media
Jade Leech:
7. ♥ How do they feel about polygamy?
Interested in theory but it couldn’t be just anyone who’s the third member of the relationship, or fourth or fifth. He thinks it could be quite interesting to date multiple people at once but he does make it known he can be quite competitive, so if one of your other partners tried to outdo him… He might have a few things to say about it. He’d probably prefer monogamy just because it’ll be less of a bloodbath, and a little simpler if you’re trying to establish a romance that’s meant to last.
8. ♥ Are they loyal to their partners?
If he picked you as his partner, of course he would be loyal. Jade isn’t a fan of wasting his own time, even if he might seem to indulge in chaotic happenings on a whim. He wouldn’t date you if he wasn’t dedicating himself to see what a life with you might be like, but he does make it clear that he’ll be honest the entire way through the relationship even if it may hurt your feelings. He just wanted to assure there were crystal clear communication skills, though it’s funny coming from a man who skirted around direct responses as much as he could and who asked ‘why do you want to know?’ to people asking if the two of you were dating.
9. ♥ Are they patient with their partners?
Absolutely. Jade might be hiding many different traits under his ‘perfect butler’ façade but his patience is not one of them, at least not when it comes to being patient for the people he loves. Floyd had been great practice for controlling his facial expressions and dealing with rampant mood swings, but this was all motivated by the love he had for his twin. The same could be said for you, though his motivations are less familial in nature.
11. ♥ Do they make an effort to find someone with similar views, be they political or moral?
Might make an effort to go for someone who doesn’t have the same viewpoints as him, just to make it interesting. But he likely wouldn't want to date a person even if he has wildly fun devil's advocate debates with them, as he doesn't want to argue every single second of his life.
12. ♥ Do they seek to find a partner purely to further the bloodline and name, is it for true love, or is it for pleasure alone?
Jade doesn’t really have a particular thing that’s guiding him in romance. It’s helped along by the fact his parents are not pushy about the subject of him and his brother getting married so it’s never been something he worried about. If it came to him then he’d know, and he’d act accordingly depending on what stage of life he was in at the moment.
17. ♥ What sort of characteristics or quirks draw them to someone?
Fun-loving
Unpredictable
Witty
Willing to indulge him and his hobbies
Not a goody two shoes
Hi Killy? How about #20 caffeine, dealer's choice for characters. Thank you!
Ooo, thank you for this one! 💙 I'm delighted at it being dealer's choice, as this got me to try my hand at writing my fave of faves: Rosie. I do hope I've got him down right! (Slight, slight spoilers for the most recent ep apply!)
caffeine
The base is somewhat beautiful when the sun’s still low. There’s a slight haze hanging just above the dewy grass, too thin to be a full-on fog but lending this early morning a particular enchantment all the same. Gold streaks flicker through the last vestiges of night. If she squints at the treeline hard enough, its greens will mingle with the twinges of red in the dawn. Like Christmas painted through a misty window.
It’ll be a while before Christmas comes, now, though the mornings aren’t getting any warmer.
Imogene puffs up her cheeks. Blows warm air between her hands, then rubs them together briskly. She’s forgotten her gloves again. Margaret’s not about to loan out her perfectly good set of spare gloves, either, if that glare from earlier is anything to go by. And Jeannie is nice and all, but the knitwork on her gloves is absolutely drenched in perfume. Imogene lets out a sigh. Contemplates the risks associated with running back to her bunk and praying her own gloves will be in the place where she put them last.
Truth is, she hasn’t got the time. Jeannie’s already taken off at a dead run for the bathroom for the second time in an hour, which has got Margaret fuming in a way that’ll at least make sure the sink’s going to be so spotless you could eat out of it. Imogene would be more worried about Jeannie if this wasn’t already the fourth time a girl like her was prone to retching her guts out in the morning and being just fine and dandy in the afternoon.
These girls, like some of the men, barely stay long enough to learn their names.
And then, of course, there are those few who seem to stay a lifetime.
“One for the road, Captain Rosenthal?”
His answering laugh is soft, but his joy somehow never fails to meet his eyes. “If you can spare me a cup, yes. Thank you.”
“It’ll be a little minute, sir, sorry.” Imogene shoots him the closest thing she’s got to an apologetic smile. “I hope you can wait that long to get your latest dose of caffeine. These new coffee makers are a bit slower on the uptake.”
Captain Rosenthal hums a little to himself. “I believe I can find the time for it this morning, Imogene.”
“Glad to hear it, sir. Congratulations on your twenty-fifth, by the way!” She’d meant to say that about five days ago, but the party had turned raucous and strange in equal measure before she’d had the chance. And the men had been pretty tightly knit around him, at least before the mood had taken another tailspin downward. “When are you due to go home? Is it a ways away yet?”
He shifts his weight from foot to foot the way he always seems to do when contemplating something important. His gaze fixes on the horizon. Well past the planes on their hardstands, beyond the line of trees and buildings. Like there’s something in the early morning sky only he can see.
Imogene waits him out the way she always does. There is no hurrying Robert Rosenthal, not when he is pondering something important before his first coffee of the day. He might have something interesting to say once the idea lands and takes root inside him. Last time, he had made a small comment about bird migratory patterns that had somehow evolved into a conversation about penguins at the zoo. The time before that, he had asked her something about hairpins – not a topic for a man, or so Margaret had scoffed after – before he’d leaned forward ever so slightly and told her some of his men might have gotten their hands on a second helping of chocolate through the cunning use of hairpins. (DeBlasio, if she had to name one. It’s always the goddamn Italians getting into trouble on this base.)
“I’m not too certain Florida will agree with me.” His smile is almost remorseful, as if he has contemplated the idea and found himself to be rather like a fish out of water. “I’d miss this weather. Gruesome chill in the air this morning.” He shudders just a little, more to himself than to her. “And I have to say, Imogene, I’d be hard-pressed to find better coffee than this.”
“Now you’re just flattering me, sir,” she laughs, grabbing a pristine white cup for him. “We do what we can, but the stateside coffee just tastes better if you ask me. I dream about it sometimes.”
“The perfect cup of coffee? Bit of milk, two sugars. Little bit of foam on top, perhaps.” There’s a twinkle in his bright eyes as he steps closer, keenly awaiting his morning shot of caffeine. “What is your poison of coffee choice in this world, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Imogene hums to herself. “Bit of milk, bit of caramel, sir.” She almost wishes she had enough time to foam the milk up a little, give it a bit of a whisk before stirring it into his cup. “The sugar’s too cloggy. Caramel syrup works just as well to sweeten it.”
“I take it there is no secret stash of caramel syrup on base here?”
“You”– she gestures with the little spoon –“would be correct, Captain. Perhaps you can sneak me some, once you’re back home?”
The shadow that passes over his face is gone as swiftly as it came, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t see it. Imogene sucks in a rather noisy breath. Feels a chill swoop down and back up her spine in a way that’s got very, very little to do with the morning cold of early March. He glances back at the horizon a moment. Wistful, her mind supplies. Then: yearning.
She’s seen it before. In Major Cleven and Captain Rivers, every time they were kept on the ground too long. In Major Egan, once Major Cleven had vanished and left a hole in the fabric of reality itself. In Stella Lombardi, whose eyes never quite seem to meet the ground anymore, and in Two, who might just survive them all. There’s something in the set of their shoulders. Something in their eyes, once you know where to look.
Imogene looks. Sees. “You’re not going home.”
Blue eyes, brighter than any morning, meet her gaze. “Not just yet.” His confession hangs in the air between them a moment. She fills up the space with a mostly full cup of coffee, milk and sugars already stirred in, and is proud when her hand does not tremble. “We have work to do here, don’t we, Imogene?” His bare hand brushes her own before he lifts the cup in clear gratitude. “Thank you for the coffee, as always.”
She takes a deep breath. Steadies herself on the counter, just out of his keen gaze’s reach. “You’re very welcome, sir. Same time tomorrow, then?”
A laugh startles out of him, bright and beaming and so alive that she wants to cry. “Same time as always, ma’am.”
___________
I'm excited to finish writing Chapter 26 because at the end of Chapter 25, the Diaz family had just returned to the U.S. and after they made it home, Eddie checked his voice mail and there was a message from his cousin about an attempted delivery of a SpedEx package for Buck. Buck had no idea who it was from and he worried about it all weekend into the New Year.
They attended Maddie's and Chimney's New Year's Eve party which turned out to be an engagement party for them but they told their found family they got married while they were in Italy and that Buck adopted Chris on Christmas morning. Everyone questioned them regarding why the didn't tell anyone about their nuptials but they reassured them they're going to have a vow renewal ceremony in May of 2024 so they can all celebrate with them. But they didn't tell them they put a bid on a house in Italy and they aren't planning to until they believe the time is right.
On January 2nd, Buck accepted the package from the SpedEx delivery driver and after he opened it and viewed the contents, he collapsed and became unresponsive and unconscious right after Eddie entered the room.
___________
Here's another snippet from Chapter 26 and it's more of Eddie's 9-1-1 call with Linda.
___________
‍“Eddie!  Listen to me.  I know it’s hard but I need you to remain calm.  Are you listening?”
He is but right now, he’s focused on Buck’s angelic face and to him it looks like he’s sleeping but he knows he’s not.  As his mind starts to spiral, he thinks of all the years they have yet to live along with the plans they have set for their future.  They’re supposed to travel the globe together so they can walk on sandy beaches in Hawaii, travel to Alaska in the dead of winter while it’s 40 degrees below zero, take a ship to Antarctica so they can see the penguins and he hasn’t mentioned it yet but he wants them to go to Sydney, Australia.  He knows they have spiders so big they’ll make them leave but he believes as long as he’s there with his husband, they’ll be ok.
The panic in his chest tries to escape his lungs for the fourth maybe even the fifth time but he swallows and forces it to go away until he can deal with it sometime later.  When he realizes he’s been quiet too long, he replies, “Yes, I—I’m listening.”
“The 141 is still stuck on the interstate but I’ve dispatched another RA unit that’s closer and they’re in the adjoining subdivision.  Their hospital transport got cancelled and they just notified dispatch they’re on their way back to their station but I’m sending them to you.  You should hear the sirens any second.”
He nods even though she can’t see him, then replies, “Ok, but… please, please tell them to hur—ry.”
“They’re coming as fast as they can.  Stay on the line with me, ok?”
“Ok.” He responds as his mind spirals at 100 mph and it’s in a tug of war with his heart because his instincts are telling him it’ll be better for him to wait for the RA unit because the closest hospital is about 10 minutes away and since the I-110 is backed up on both sides, it’ll take him twice as long to drive there and it’ll be even longer if he has to take the streets.
“Eddie?”
“Hmm?”
“I need you to keep talking to me.  You said he’s unresponsive?”
“Yes!”
“Does he have history of a heart condition?”  She knows the answer but she has to ask him for the recorded line.  She was at work the night Buck got struck by lightning and even though she didn’t take the 9-1-1 call, the entire dispatch center was on full alert when Captain Nash explained they had a firefighter who had been struck and they were three minutes out from the nearest hospital.
“Yes, he—he was struck by lightning last year and he—he…”  He stops talking because he’s on the verge of hyperventilating and the panic lodged in his throat is attempting to claw its way out but he inhales a big gulp of air and breathes past it, then he continues.  “He died for—three minutes and seventeen seconds.  That’s how long his heart stop—ped… I know be—because I counted.”
“Don’t worry Eddie, the 128 is enroute and I’m being told by the paramedic on duty they just entered your subdivision.”
Eddie’s crying and he knows it but he doesn’t care.  He emphatically admits, “He… can’t—go… he’s my heart, my every—thing!”
Linda can hear the pain in Eddie’s voice and she wants so badly to be there for her friend.  So, she looks at Sue, who's listening in and gets the nod she was waiting for then says, “It’s ok Eddie.  Just listen to the sound of my voice.  Everything is going to be ok.  Can you hear me?”
“Yes—yes… I can year you.  How much lon—ger before they’ll get here?”  He asks through broken sobs.
“They should be there in less than one minute.  Do you hear the sirens?”
Can Eddie hear the sirens or is he too distraught? 👀
Will Buck make it to the hospital or will he leave Eddie all alone? 🥹
Court Gentry x reader
787 words. Unedited. If I do I’ll stress out
Creepy men following you, but court saves you, violence
Other Writings
“Hey baby” the man across the street with his friends says. You know he’s talking to you because there’s no one left for him to greet.
You don’t react besides grabbing your pepper spray in your purse. When you pass the group and reach the next light on the sidewalk you think you’re now safe, until you hear the multiple footsteps behind you.
“Come on sweetheart, no smile for me?” The man grabs your arm that’s holding the pepper spray. You can’t use it on him, even if you tried he’s already overpowering you. He won’t let you take another step, risk of falling otherwise.
“Let go—” Your voice is soft and weak. You clear your throat and try again. “Let go of me.”
“Aw” the man coos, his friends laugh. “M’sorry baby, I just couldn’t help myself.” He lets go but now five men are all around you.
Your hand tightens on the can. You know you will only be able to spray one man before you get restrained, and then it’ll only be up to how good you fight.
In the middle of you trying to figure out which man you should pick to pepper spray, there’s another set of footsteps farther away.
There’s a blonde man turning the corner and limping, he seems to be surprised there are other people outside at the time when he sees you and the men around.
His hand is on his side and he grunts. You don’t know if he’s in pain or if he’s annoyed, but he slows down as he gets closer and looks at the way you’ve been backed into the side of a car.
“Everything okay here?” He looks from one man to the next, and then you at last. He raises his eyebrows and you know the question was meant for you.
The men that had followed you are all looking at the new comer so you take you chance and shake your head delicately. Thankfully none of them noticed your action.
“Yeah, we’re good” one man verbalizes and steps in front of you.
“Okay” your possible savior sighs and stands straighter “we’re doing this.”
In a flash, the blonde man the has the one closest to him on the ground before he moves onto the next one. He punches once to the man’s face and then another one to ribs.
The other men begin to kick into action. One attacks the blonde man from behind. He attempts to use a choke hold, but the blonde man while his second victim is bent over and fighting for breath, grabs the wrist of his new attacker in both hands. He pushes the body part in different directions and then twists. There’s a snap and a scream and then the injured man retreats to the sidelines.
The second man regains his breath and steps back up to the blonde man with his fists back up.
The blonde huffs and grabs the opponent’s left elbow and spins him so he faces his back. He swings his arm around and hits the man’s temple. He crumbles but he is quickly replaced by a fourth man.
He gives a better fight than the men before him, but it’s still no match. Some punches are exchanged before the blonde wrestles him into a choke hold like the other man had tried to do.
That’s when the fifth man, the one who had been propositioning you, attacks.
He’s had a knife the whole time and now points it into your savior’s arm that is wrapped around the other man’s neck.
He opens his mouth for a threat, but you decide it’s time you help. You rush behind the man with the knife and with you pull your hand from you purse. It is still wrapped around the can of pepper spray. You copy the way the man had incapacitated the second victim and bring the can down onto the man’s temple with force.
He falls the same time his friend does from the loss of air, unconscious.
You swallow and take in all the men passed out, except for the man who is holding his wrist. He’s already running away from the scene.
“That’s not for me, is it?”
You look back to the blonde man when he interrupts your thoughts. He gestures to the pepper spray in your hand and you realize this is his attempt to relax you from the situation.
You shake your head and drop it back into your purse. “Thank you”
He shakes his head as if he did not take on five men to help you.
He takes one step but keeps his eyes on you. He’s still limping. “Can I walk you home?”
:::::::
In my head Six was just walking back from a more higher stakes fight when he sees you. The second fight is easy for him but he’s just annoyed lol
Maybe I’ll write a smutty part two?
Nursing your third – fourth? Fifth? – drink of the night, you stared grimly at the aged wood lining the bar. You’d spent almost every night there for the last week, though you were fairly certain you would have to look for a new hideaway if the bartender’s sorrowful expression shifted any closer to pity. You’d already had your heart shattered, you didn’t need to become a “sad story” for her to use later when dissuading people from drinking so much.
“I’m sorry, (Y/N).”
“It’s always been her, hasn’t it?” you laughed humorlessly, watery gaze meeting regretful emerald.
“…yes.”
Sneering at the memory, you took a heavy swig of liquor. It burned against your raw, sob-cracked throat but you ignored it, relishing in the fire. At least then you could feel something.
“Why drag this on so long then? If you’ve known?”
“I don’t know…”
A familiar, honey sweet perfume wafted under your nose as someone landed on the stool beside you and your eyes slammed closed. You knew who it was, never one to leave a friend in need despite how much you wished she wasn’t here, since you couldn’t bear to look at her. Look at the reason for the end of a three year long love that apparently hadn’t truly been…
Love.
“What are you doing here, Kara?” you mumbled brokenly, slowly gathering the courage to peek at the frowning blonde. Her silence was telling and you wanted to melt through the floorboards of the dingy bar. “If you’re here to comfort me over my ex being in love with you for the entirety of our relationship, please don’t. I already feel awful enough. And if you’re here to apologize for dating her now, I will personally smack you with a chair. Mostly because I know it won’t hurt you but it’ll save my hand and my buzz.”
“I didn’t want you to be alone,” she offered softly, fighting her instinct to do exactly what you asked her not to do. “You haven’t spoken to anyone in a week. We’ve all been really worried. I nearly came looking for you a few times, but Alex told me you’d probably want to be left alone and that I was the last person you’d want to see. You need a friend, though…”
The meekness in her words and her demeanor forced a genuine chuckle from your chest. It was reminiscent of the shy reporter you’d met years ago.
Simple, sweet Kara Danvers.
“There’s irony in this, I hope you know. Being consoled by the woman I was left for.”
The unhappy glint in her crystal gaze left you reeling slightly. She seemed guilty but there was an undercurrent of something you couldn’t exactly place.
“When she asked me out tonight, I was confused,” Kara admitted, wincing at the pain dancing across your features. “She told us what happened the night after she broke up with you but she was vague about why. I thought maybe she was just being Lena; that she’d come to her senses. Her words were very Luthor and disconnected. Strange.
“She invited me to dinner this afternoon and I went, thinking maybe she wanted to come up with a plan to fix this. Fix you guys. I always thought you were a great couple! But then she started explaining and all I could think about was coming to find you. About how wrong her confession was. How could she hurt you over something that…” she trailed off, teeth clamping into her bottom lip as she tried to find the words escaping her.
“She told me this was inevitable,” you scoffed bitterly, downing the rest of your drink. “A Super and a Luthor. A great love story, like fucking Romeo and Juliet; as if that made all of this better.”
Brows scrunching disconcertedly, Kara replied, “Didn’t they die at the end? Because of their families?”
You paused for a moment before a hearty laugh filled the mostly-deserted bar. “Yes.”
“Well,” Kara cleared her throat awkwardly, ignoring the discomfort that idea left her with. “She was wrong. I don’t…I didn’t…”
As the unspoken meaning of her words washed over you, you gaped at the Kryptonian like she’d sprouted two extra heads and a tail. A gentle breeze could’ve bowled you over. Fuck, an ant could’ve carried you off.
Saying you were stunned would be an absolute understatement to the current turn of events.
“What?”
Shrugging, Kara nervously played her twitching fingers. “I care about Lena. She’s my friend but the past and the family problems and everything that’s happened is just too much to overlook. I can’t spend my life worrying about another knife aimed at my back. I think she’s different than her family – I really do – but there’s so much history we’d have to erase and I really don’t want to end up like Romeo and Juliet.”
Blinking owlishly, you couldn’t even pretend to find the words for an intelligible response. All that would surely form from your mouth would be sounds. And not even the kind she’d be able to decipher.
Just… sounds.
“You were who I wanted to see.”
There was a confession hidden somewhere in her words - no matter how minute an admittance it seemed – but you were too tipsy and exhausted and heartbroken to consider it at that moment. Later, when the alcohol had run its course and you were done wallowing in your misery, it would come to you and you would understand, running like your life depended on it to her apartment at four in the morning demanding answers to questions you’d never realized you’d had.
But for now, this was enough.
