I saw the ask about No Regrets and it reminded me of this question I’ve tried to find an answer to for years but could never find. Sorry if the wording is weird, it’s hard to type out because asking and explaining my question is difficult
Did the author of No Regrets get permission to use characters from Isayama? Or was it just a fan made thing that wasn’t canon and just something created for fun?
What’s always been weird to me is it actually got ADAPTED. Like it wasn’t created by Isayama or even canon in the series yet, but Wit animated it. It was published in September 2013, animated in December 2014 and April 2015, and THEN chapter 69 came out in May.
Did Isayama even have a backstory for Levi? Did he see No Regrets and decide to give Levi a backstory and make it canon? I have no idea how far ahead Isayama even planned aot back then because I 1) had no idea of aot’s existence, and 2) wasn’t there when the manga was released back in 2013-2015.
For the new chapter we’re getting for Levi, do we know how many pages it’ll be? Will it have the same amount of pages as a normal chapter, or be shorter or longer?
Isayama authorized the No Regrets manga and visual story. You might find this post interesting as it contains an interview with Isayama and Hikaru Suruga (the No Regrets artist) as well as words by the author, Gun Snark (Gan Sunaaku). No Regrets was one of 6 visual novels/mangas that were release by various authors in the 2013-2015 times frame . All with Isayama's permission. There was a huge explosion of authorized material during those years, including the Smart Pass content, A Spoof on Titan, Attack on Titan Junior High, Before the Fall and so on. The list is really endless.
My opinion on the why of it all is that Isayama has talked about how he was convinced in those early years that each chapter would be his last. He was in constant fear of cancellation. He's also mentioned his long work days, the stress, and how little sleep he was getting. Writing and illustration 46 pages a month was a more-than-full-time job for Isayama and he was stretched entirely too thin. When the series exploded in popularity, there was a desire for more and tons of money to be made, but Isayama didn't have the time to produce anything beyond what he was doing. Thus the collaborations started. With No Regrets, Isayama provided guidelines as to what he envisioned for Levi's backstory. I can't find proof of that, but I do recall reading that he provided the general idea. It was a very limited scope, which is why he's able to produce Bad Boy now. He had a vision for Levi, but no time to develop it so he allowed No Regrets to cover a small period of time. I believe Bad Boy is only going to be 18 pages, but I'l very excited for it. I can't wait to see what Isayama can do when he isn't dealing with strict deadlines. Thanks for the ask! I hope this covered some of what you were interested in.

What are your thoughts on the whole Mikasa's new family thing? As a normal person with some romantic experience, I think it makes sense for her to have a family and not be stuck single on a dead guy for life. As an AoT fan who can basically not separate her from her 'Eren' rhetoric, it feels like a twist... or dare I say, betrayal? I wish we had a bit more padding to the ending, because it seems these things were wrapped up very quickly, and besides the literal deaths, I feel like my girl Historia and Levi got such bitter endings...
This is quite a few questions so I'm answering them in a list:
1) I really like Mikasa moving on because from the framing of her final moments in the story and the passing time in the extra pages and credits, I feel like she had a mourning period and then was able to move on and start a new family, something she always wanted. And I think earning that ending is at least some (and an appropriate one) reward after what she went through.
2) She has always loved Eren, but she has also punched him in the face when she thought he was doing stupid shit and being hot-headed. She threw him in chapter 1, punched him in the face in episode 2, is perfectly capable of making her own decisions without him, which was the point of the first half of episode 6. As much as she loves him, her attachment has actually comparatively little to do with him and everything to do with the death of her parent(s) figure(s) twice in a row in the span of a year when she was a child.
Tumblr media
(Episode 6 in the anime, chapter 5 in the manga.)
Her attachment to Eren has caused a bunch of issues and is her biggest "flaw", but she has never been a *doormat*, which is what so many people read her as and I disagree with.
The decision to kill Eren was made by her when she saw families and children suffer because of him, something she can deeply relate to and works to prevent.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 48)
Mikasa isn't a crying damsel, she's a warrior who went through some pretty tough shit and is reacting accordingly.
She will fight when she needs to fight and do the right thing when she needs to do the right thing.
3) Pacing was actually probably the biggest issue I personally had with the manga's ending, but the anime pretty much fixed all of it in my eyes. Mikasa's feelings for Eren, though, and vice versa was one of the most obvious things about the entire story from start to finish, so you've got a disagreement there as well. From the moment you see the subtle blush from Eren in the flashback, the trope became really clear to me and nothing onward from there really convinced me otherwise because Eren never had any other relationship like that in the story, no other love interest characters or characters framed in relation to his character in the same way.
4) Likewise, I think Levi probably had the best ending out of every single character in the story. As much of a pyrrhic victory as defeating Eren was, he got his revenge and kept his life. He got the most strongly defined closure he could get in context of the story.
5) What I agree with you on is how Historia was treated, though I'm not sure if for the same reasons or in the same way. The final arc basically destroyed her character and the anime equally did not even mention or even have a nod towards any of her defining moments as a character or her important relationships (because I suspect Isayama just could not figure out how to write her in this context in any other way).
In my eyes, she went through one of the best, most strongly defined character arcs in the entire story, but all we got from it was a metaphor for the birth of a new world... through a clearly gay-coded character. It's pretty awful and contradicts the theme of freedom her character is about and embodies by the end of the Uprising arc AND the general ideas of freedom the story is about, but I choose to put it in its own awful box and reluctantly close my eyes to it.
I think her arc was about her finding out what she wants and no longer living in a role and I think the entirety of the final arc went against that.
I've gone into why Historia's arc is awful in many other asks and posts, so I don't feel like reiterating it all right now (I have a tag for her character and pretty much all characters, so if anyone is interested, you'll probably find my detailed thoughts looking around there, but, yeah I think it's pretty awful even if you don't see her as gay-coded.)
Thank you for the ask!

Why I think that Chapter 139 (AOT Ending) makes no sense
Yes. Actually it should come out to your ears, but I thought about the last chapter again and I wanted to share this with you. The story about Ymir Fritz: We knew from Ymir Fritz that she must have been around 14 years old when she was first seen. She was a slave and they had her tongue removed which is why she couldn't speak. When she released the pigs and was therefore hunted and finally fell into the tree, it was a sign of her desire for freedom.
When Zeke was about to go through with the euthanasia plan, Eren hugged Ymir and said she was free. She then followed Eren's plans instead of obeying the king's descendants as she has done over the years. The message was clear: Ymir is no longer a slave to the king.
Until then it was still logical. Ymir Fritz was actually a slave, even after her death. Only Eren could make it clear that she was FREE. But then the last chapter came and nothing made sense anymore.. Suddenly she had feelings for the king and suffered from her love for him for 2 millennia. Only Mikasa could change that. That also explains why she released the pigs and had no will to live. Above all, it never became clear why the ONE person was needed for Ymir to break free and find peace was. People. We talk about of thousend of years. No one can tell me there hasn't been someone who has loved like Mikasa before. Especially the scene in which Mikasa kisses Eren's severed head and Ymir stands next to him with a satisfied expression on his face terrifies me enormously. What's the point of having an impact with Mikasa when Ymir has practically applied herself by obeying Eren instead of Zeke? But the main thing was that you could unnecessarily add more love drama.
Tumblr media
Erens plan was...destruction: Eren's plan was to wipe out humanity away from paradise. It is clear why he did this. Paradise threatened to be wiped out from the world and it was evident that there would be no peaceful negotiations. So the goal was set and implemented with Ymir's help. Armin and Co. should stop him, kill him and become heroes so that paradise will be accepted by the world. So I thought... would be his plan. No. Eren's plan was to do whatever it took to get Mikasa to kill him in order to break the titancurse. But if he hadn't known that the curse could be broken in this way, he would still have killed the people. And he doesn't know why... Give him a good reason, PLEASE. Wouldn't the euthanasia plan or the plan to hold the attackers at bay with the Wall Titans have been better options than killng thousands of innocent people? Of course he didn't want to sacrifice Historia and the freedom of his people. Oh well. Eren seemed to want to save his people above all. I think it's a bit of a shame at this point, because he knew that there were also good people outside of paradise. Chadren ist real shit. xD He could have at least THINK about an alternative. Instead of: I don't know why. How EreMika ruined the ending: I personally feel that Eren's outburst of emotion about his love for Mikasa was quite inappropriate. But after all, the whole story should end like this, otherwise Isayama wouldn't have brought in the totally illogical part with Ymir's feelings for her tormentor and the illogicial story, that only Mikasa can end Ymirs lovesick pain. Mikasa is quite a tragic character. She was severely traumatized by the death of her parents and the subsequent death of her new family. It was only thanks to Eren that she didn't give up on herself and life completely. But the aftermath of her trauma is still felt. If you look at her quotes like this, you realize that she says a lot about the beauty and especially the cruelty of life. But "fighting" is also very common in their vocabulary. Eren, on the other hand, is not only the last part of her remaining family, but the one who always gave her support in bad situations. This is also the reason why she doesn't want Eren to put himself in danger and is very protective of him. Unfortunately, her fear of losing Eren gives her quite a bit of tunnel vision. Because of this, she puts herself and others at risk. It should be obvious that she is in love with him. Eren, on the other hand, never seemed to have more feelings for Mikasa, than he did for a good friend or sister. Isayama said he wanted Eren and Mikasa to kiss the moment they were attacked by the grinning titan, but I think that's nonsense. That would mean that he already had feelings for Mikasa at that point and was aware that she liked him too. Who else kisses their adoptive sister without being asked? No. He had to ask Mikasa and then Zeke if she loves him, nine years later so he could be sure. Especially because he should have known it, if he can see into the future. Most of all...why didn't he confess his love to her before kissing Historia's hand? No. From the reader's point of view, it really doesn't appear that Eren had feelings for Mikasa that went beyond sibling love. That's why the scene with Eren's emotional outburst was more than surprising and out of place. It just seemed forced. The whole chapter. ~*~ It just seemed like something had to be concocted to create extra love drama and still squeeze in the fact that Eren loved Mikasa so much. Otherwise you could have left it at Mikasa's kiss and then wrote the scene of the war ending and so on. It would have been a nice ending, because Mikasa was able to break free from her trauma and let Eren go. It would have been more logical, because Ymir would simply have been a slave and not a person with Stockholm Syndrome. And Isayama don´t need to have drawn a flashback in which Eren half-heartedly explains his behavior. That Ymir loved the king and it took Mikasa to break the curse and all the trappings were just out of place and made zero sense. Sorry.

Hitch Wins! On to the Next Poll...
Before any more time passes, let's get things rolling for the next round, guys.
First things first.......the results of the last poll.
First let me just say I was rather disappointed at the lack of votes, guys. A mere 61 this time around. 😞
I expected a better turnout. Especially since it was a poll honoring AOT's forgotten girls, one of the main points of my page. And I heavily suspect it was because I had to repost my original poll that it came up weak.
In my experience, when something is reposted, it generates less views on the second go around. I have seen it on YouTube and elsewhere. And I would appreciate if such a trend didn't repeat itself here. I feel like the vote turnout would have been better if I didn't have to go back and do that due to an error, and I do know the original results played out differently as a consequence.
I just hope for better from now on. And for those who do vote, PLEASE REBLOG as you do. It would help tremendously.
Anyway, as I was saying.....our top three winners. The first with 26% of the vote....
Tumblr media
HITCH DREYSE! Not too surprising, she always seemed to be a favorite with most. One of the few members of the Military Police to actually develop a likable personality. And one of the few people to establish any real connection to Annie Leonhart which counts for something. She definitely could have benefitted from a larger role in the story. Seeing how she represents a badly underdeveloped faction within the Walls.
And at second place with just over 21% of the vote....
Tumblr media
NANABA! The masculine beauty of Squad Miche. This is a character who continues to grow on me. And as one of the few supporting scouts with any substantial amount of screentime, she is a fascinating character. Cool under pressure, headstrong, and a natural leader. I think we can all agree she deserved better in the long run. Justice for Squad Miche.
And in third with just shy of 20% of the vote...
Tumblr media
ISABEL MAGNOLIA! Levi's long lost friend and companion. The third of the main ladies to have an intimate and lasting impact on Levi Ackerman's life. Would have been fascinating to explore more of that unique friendship, seeing the connections he already has with Petra and Hange. She was the initial frontrunner before I had to repost the poll. Wonder how she would have fared otherwise. But she is truly the dark horse here, even in third place. I may have to do an Isabel Deserves Better post one of these days. Who doesn't love an energetic redhead?
Meanwhile.....
Tumblr media
Poor Anka is dead last here. Didn't even crack 2% in this poll. 😔 Scoring less than Hannah Diamant And Rico Brzenska. Such a shame, I always thought she was cute and we deserved to see her in action. Please show her some love people. Because she got dealt a raw deal by Isayama. More on THAT one later....... 🔍🤔
To everyone who did vote and reblog, thank you! Let's hope for a stronger turnout this next go around.
Now, this week's poll......
In order to be fair, I am NOT including Levi as he is already plenty powerful. I also will NOT include Erwin Smith, as the controversial choice of giving Armin the serum over him I think speaks for itself. It's enough to assume that yes, there exists a vested interest in him coming back as a Titan Shifter already.
And yes I added Mikasa to the list. Let's pretend there was nothing that prohibited her from becoming a Titan, because frankly the so called Ackerpower is not well explained anyway. Also screw the canon, Isayama's rules don't apply here. Let's use a little imagination I say.
Well that is that. Please have at it people and please, REBLOG!
Let's see who comes out on top. 👍

Facts and Curiosities about RivaMika - Part 2
All credits go to Mundo RivaMika (Facebook) page. I just translated and am reposting with permission
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Mikasa in the manga calls Levi by his full title "Levi heishichou". The word "Heichou" is not wrong, it's just a diminutive. It shows the respect he has for him.
2) In a livestream promoting the first part of the third season. Hiroshi (Levi's seiyuu) and Yui (Mikasa's seiyuu) were the presenters. They even had a fun "Rol game". Here is the translation:
Yui (Mikasa): So... Looks like Levi heichou has to leave for an expedition now? right?
Hiroshi(Levi): Well, well...I'll do some entertainment in the dressing room.
Mikasa: Ehhh?! Really?! It's not for an expedition? Not for cleaning either?
Levi: Yeah, I guess. Maybe like that. I have things to do one by one. I've got to go.
Mikasa: You're leaving now? Is it okay if Mikasa doesn't go with you?
Levi: ... I'm sorry you have to speak for yourself.
Mikasa: That's too bad.
Levi: Yeah, you still have your mission, right?
Mikasa: Yes I do. This streaming still has 40 minutes to go.
*Burst out laughing*
Tumblr media
3) Her tag on the Fanfiction platform has more than 630 stories and on the Ao3 platform she has approximately +820.
4) In the first cover of the magazine where the monthly manga where they both appear is published, Armin was included. However, in the end he did not appear.
Left = Published cover.
Right: Sketch.
Tumblr media
5) Isayama has redrawn two scenes of them. The first is the look they both give each other at the trial and the second is Levi shirtless. The top part of the image is the one published in the monthly magazine, the second one in the official volumes.
Tumblr media
6) There is a funny CD Drama where they have a cleaning battle.
7) In the Livestream prior to the first part of the third season, they drew a picture of the seiyuus with their respective characters. Yui=Mikasa, Hiroshi=Levi
Tumblr media
8) Kanae Hazuki, the mangaka of the famous shoujo manga "Sukitte ii na yo", made a drawing of the two in the special edition of the magazine where the manga was published. If you ever wondered how the Rivamika shoujo version would look like, here is the answer ♡
Tumblr media
9) It was selected as one of the best ships of 2018 due to the insurrection arc according to wikia. It was a moment of happiness for the fans of the ship, due to the fact that, at that time it didn't have the same popularity as today.
10) In one of the magazines that promoted the third season, yui ishikawa (Mikasa's Seiyuu) was interviewed. Here is the translation.
Interviewer: Levi asking Mikasa to help him convey a message, seems to show that he treats Mikasa differently from the rest.
Mikasa differently from the rest. In other words, it feels as if there is a sense of recognition towards her.
Ishikawa: Something like that. The thing is, Mikasa feels a burden of regret towards Levi because his past mistake caused his injury. Although she respects him, she still can't trust him 100% (chuckle). At the same time, perhaps due to the worries that still remain within her, she also believes that Eren's current situation is actually because of Levi. Because of her worried words, "How's your leg?", I received this instruction (during recording), "Because [Mikasa] feels uncomfortable there, please use a 'harder style of expression for the dialogue." As a result, [the production team] allowed me to pause even longer during that line. Even though Mikasa wants to thank Levi, she still possesses some of the animosity from before, so she can't be as direct, at least in one part.
11) The first fanart published of this ship in The Pixiv Platform was in February 2013. This is the one you see here.
Tumblr media
12) Both promoted couple watches under the name of "the strongest couple of mankind". If you look closely at the image, you can see them on their wrists.
Tumblr media
13) Both represent the "Joker" in SNK's official card collection.
Tumblr media
14) They had a little over 25 moments omitted in the anime between the first 3 seasons. With the insurrection arc being the most cut.
15) They have more than 3,700 works (illustrations, doujinshis, novels, etc) on the Pixiv platform.
16) One of the most popular headcanons in the fandom, is one where Mikasa rescues Levi just as he did with her. This was only seen in the video games until chapter 135 was released.
Tumblr media
End ♡. I hope you enjoyed it. I will bring part 3

Reiner?.. Has anyone already mention him?
Hello!! 💕💕💕
Not yet, thank you for putting Reibear in my inbox!!
Give me a character
Our favorite depressed ray of sunshine — Reiner Braun!! 🎉🎉🎉
1. How I feel about this character:
I adored Reiner and his lovely eyebrows from the very beginning. I liked how kind and reliable his was, and honestly I was a little afraid he’ll end up dying tragically for shock value, but thankfully he turned out to be “a villain”. And then I started loving him even more!! He is so tormented, my poor babygirl, my heart breaks for him. He really considers himself the worst piece of shit, but I have forgiven him for everything. And so did Jean. :))
2. All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Jean is the only character I ship him with, to be honest. I see the appeal of his relationship with Bertholdt, but I guess it just makes me too sad. However, I do enjoy the Reibert fanarts a lot. Cuties, both of them.
We both know I can talk about Reijean a lot, so let me just say this: I really like how Reiner is able to find some peace and solace thanks to Jean. Even when Jean beats the living shit out of him in canon? I think that this is exactly what Reiner needs at that point in his life. This is almost a cathartic experience for him — to finally pay for what he did. But later, when Jean already feels guilty for hurting him and tries to do everything in his power to keep Reiner alive? That really brings me back to what Ymir said about being lower than shit and having someone smile at her with kindness regardless. Reiner didn’t have someone like that before Jean. And that makes me feel things!!
3. My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Ymir!! The freckled one, of course. I love their relationship so much. They are not even close friends, but they understand each other so well. I immensely enjoy how they tease each other.
4. My unpopular opinion about this character:
I feel like people tend to forget he’s actually pretty smart? He’s a vice captain. He was shown to be a good strategist. Isayama considers him one of the smartest members of the Cadet Corps, together with Armin and Jean. His whole standoff with Erwin in Shiganshina was to make us aware of how perceptive and collected he is on the battlefield. I get the impression that some fans like to paint him as a helpless bimbo post his nervous breakdown, but even when deeply depressed, he’s still intelligent and manipulative. He is not helpless in the least, he just wants to pay for his crimes.
5. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
The ReiJean hug!! I know we have this
Tumblr media
and this
Tumblr media
but I want more!

I finally watched AOT's last episode and frankly, I am not okay, I have been sobbing a river oh my fucking god.
Anyways, it was really good, as expected of MAPPA anyway, I was pretty much crying the whole episode actually.
I have complaints, mostly because of the not included anime, little things like not having the flashbacks of Armin of reading a book in the rain, the squirrels etc. etc. I would have love to see them in the market and the way to the boy who sought freedom, goodbye was not implemented, I WAS WAITING FOR THAT COME ON
The anime only scenes were good too, like Levi giving food to the refugees, falco and gabi, i wish we saw their outfits tho, they slayed with that one.
the way they played 13 no fuyu, im killing myself, ive been listening to that shit since 2022 which mind you was when i was active once more in aot, the fucking flashbacks my god, that was so tragic RAHHH
i also saw aot's op, EREN WITH A BOW? EREN WITH A BOW!!! MIND YOU I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE HUNGER GAMES SO IMMEDIATELY IM LIKE YES YES IT'S GIVING KATNISS EVERDEEN, WITH WHAT HIM BEING HUMANITY'S HOPE, ESP WITH THE FIRE COMING OUT OF IT FORMING A BIRD
THE SAME BIRD WE SAW ON S4 ENDING 1, oh my god, the opening was really cool omg, it perfectly showcased eren's journey, what he went through, despite being absent in the final chapters, it still showed Eren was still the protagonist...Which isayama did not understand when he made 139
Yes, I am bitter still with the ending, no, I am not hearing anyone out and no, I am not going to pour my disappointments with it STILL, here because yeah.
It's such a shame that's the last and final time we'll ever see it, devastating tragedy omg.
ARMIN AND EREN'S FINAL INTERACTION, IM GLAD THEY MADE THEM HOLD HANDS, THANK YOU MAPPA, PLS THE WAY THEY'LL BE TOGETHER FOREVER AND WILL BE WAITING FOR EACH OTHER IN HELL, GAGGED, IM DEAD, MY ROMAN EMPIRE FOR REAL
Now that's out of the way.
It's been a long and fun ride, regardless, the final season has been going for what three years, i've been with this series for three years, it was fun really it was, this series took such a simplistic and cliched approach then twisted into something more complex and truly gutwrenching. 2020 was nothing without AOT, in my opinion, watching AOT broadened my media consumption, yanked me into the anime world and i already have so many fandoms i'm in.
2020 was a hard time too, i couldn't have done it without this bloody series, god, i remember aboarding the train hype, everything was everywhere, fics, art, videos, memes etc. All those I read influenced my writing style, all those theories made me think more critically, those memes and videos of it made me laugh. It's funny how a series like this one comforted me so much.
I remember being so traumatized by the first episode i'm like who the fuck would ever like this series with this much blood and that night i immediately searched for eren fics because i was like who is this boy i like him, i fucking dreamt of the beast titan, all those nights racing with my sister who could finish the series first, i literally woke up at 4 just to watch it before she could.
Fucking terrified which of my favorite characters were going to die next, literally sobbing over armin's death, god and the mindfuck with Marley and Eldians and Subjects of Ymir in the fray oh my god.
Can I just say, I wouldn't be who I was without AOT? Even with my cynical behavior, it's all because of it.
2021 who i never fail to reiterate and think fondly is good because of AOT as well, I figured wow, the final season is coming back, I should rewatch it again and so the hyperfixation began, i was sick too, almost dying too actually, dengue is dangerous and it was just a fond memory because i was watching aot and i acted like i never had watch these scenes in my life and despite feeling like dying i felt okay.
I was so batshit crazy when part 2 came out, that was the one that was actually peak AOT don't lie, I was literally screaming like i was giving birth OVER AN OPENING AND AN ENDING, i'll never forget any of it.
When I cried watching the whole episode, it really just occurred to me that this is really the end for AOT, i was only ever able to go through it because I have the anime and it what really kept the whole fandom alive, the anime's honestly the reason why it had this many fans as you can see.
And again the way it's heartwrenching for it to just be a simple series and then it's full blown war, jean and reiner holding out to each other, remembering how they used to be close and comrades then betrayals and war happened and it's all ruined.
The devastating realization of seeing the last few panels animated, watching the end flash through the screen, realizing there was nothing out of this now, no more next episodes, no more hype, it's gone and it's so devastating because how happy it made you, the way you'll never see these characters again, only in rewatches or art. But it's not the same.
I admit I don't feel as hyperfixated over it now, after getting burnt out of it last year, even good things go badly sadly and i was just here for eren now, but doesn't change the fact this series has nurtured my quarantine, i grew up with this series even if it was only recent, who changed the trajectory of my life and had me find my paths.
I'll never forget these characters who made my life, who brought life to the story, even if they were just moved by the plot now, i'll always have a soft spot for AOT, i will always love it, regardless how much i hate it, there will always be fondness within it.
It's kind of weird, really to see Levi who has done so much to the fandom just by existing and being drawn and animated now cease to exist? I suppose, looking at him feels weird like imagine comparing 2014 levi to 2023 levi now omg, that's where you really begin to realize how much time has passed and how much AOT has evolved AGAIN JKSDHJ
well, i'm still on eren's side, still hate what happened to him but i'll always love him, he is such an important character to me, i don't think i truly ever loved someone like him despite representing the total opposite of me, he just had that charm i suppose, his views are so hauntingly beautiful, idealistic, him representing hope, despite what he did, in the end he did what he could for himself and for his people IN MY HUMBLE ONION
eren yeager i'll always love you
i'm kinda scared what would happen to this fandom now, will it die now? Will it live? I doubt, I haven't even finished my eren fic and lol, either way i hope someone will still enjoy AOT, i hope still there will be new watchers.
This is long but this is just how I really feelt about AOT which I wholeheartedly do love and cherish with all the memories and the pain it gave.
Thank you Isayama for this world, for these characters, for these mindblowing revelations about war, life and freedom, for the heartaches and the joy.
Thank you WIT for raising AOT and truly breathing life to it, for garnering fans for it to be more appreciated.
Thank you MAPPA for continuing WIT's legacy, you are not the same but still delievered, thank you for carrying the final season and the fandom on your back, may you sleep well and have your deserved pay.
Thank you for the voice actors who breathed those memorable lines to be used in edits.
Thank you Linked Horizon for coming back, aot was iconic because of your openings.
Thank you AOT for everything.

Assuming if Mikasa does indeed die by Eren's hand in the anime, I wonder how that will happen. Maybe he regenerates after she kills him? If Levi also dies, I wonder if they'll still keep the "Mikasa, stay with me" by having Levi hold Mikasa in her dying moments before Eren kills him too. I've also seen Tensa seaparately theorize that Mikasa may die from an arm injury like her Muv-Luv counterpart Sumika did. What do you think?

YES okay you brought up the “Eren is alive and well” branch of a theory too — a lot of people think that Eren lives even after being beheaded, due to 1) Reiner’s ability to transfer his conscience throughout his body to save his life when getting his vital point cut (mirrors Eren’s beheading) and/or 2) Jaw Titan ability to operate a full Titan with powers while being in a crystal underground… Just seems like Isayama builds and creates such OP Titan abilities for no reason…? And if anime-Eren actually intends to live, wouldn’t he exhaust all means he learned before accepting defeat? (The way he utilized Annie’s fighting style once he learned it too!)
All that to answer your question — I could totally see a route in which everything of manga is animated normally (including Stay With Me, etc!) to the death of Eren as it happens in the manga, making everybody think oh shit, maybe this is just going to be an exact manga adaptation……..
only for him to be shown to actually survive. BOOM, a cliffhanger where the Part 1 episode ends.
Then Part 2 happens and it’s where all hell and chaos lets loose.
You brought up the Sumika arm death with the butterfly wings!! I’ve seen this comparison too and I never stopped to think about how exactly that would play out. It would make sense, maybe, and honestly probably makes for a more emotionally impactful moment, for a slow death of Mikasa. Who knows if it’s exactly arm injury tho, since ripped butterfly wing could just symbolize any type of deadly injury. But knowing how specific the image is, absolutely it could be exactly that. Pure tragedy especially if her death happens in Eren’s arms, as some other theories suggest which is my next segue…
The AOT song theories are insane as a whole but let me bring up 1 specific song, written and sung in Mikasa’s POV: Clean Earth.
Clean Earth is quite literally a death song — if you’re into Les Mis it’s also very much like “A Little Fall of Rain” where Eponine ignores her slow death after being shot, only wanting to soak in being in Marius’ arms to the point where she doesn’t even finish the song. Pls read the full lyrics of these songs but here is how it ends:
Tumblr media
This is getting long LOL sorry, but yes — long story short, I believe if Mikasa’s death happens it will be caused by Eren injuring her to the point of bleeding to death, and she will die in his arms while speaking. Because after all, just being by his side was enough for him (ugh). It will be the most tragic ending; Eren doesn’t want to have to do it, but he knows it’s the only way for him to achieve real freedom from these deathly timelines she is somehow able to start, and it never ends bc she can’t fully let go of Eren.
Isayama also always said he always envisioned a tragic ending for AOT, too. How much more tragic can it get than THAT 😢
Throwing Levi into the mix… 100% I could see Levi giving his life to try to save Mikasa and the others. If Eren lives to complete rumbling I don’t see the alliance living 😭 And when it seems hopeless, Captain Levi who defended and protected them for so long would do exactly that til the very end. Fack.
IM SORRY @chrissythisissforyou
THIS IS A NOVEL, HERE U GO
(I’m also half falling asleep so hopefully this all is coherent enough)
((Real talk, I’m excited to have all of these written down because if all of this does freaking happen!!!! I have references!! LOL))

what do you do when inspiration suddenly hits you? like do you just memorize it in ur head or note it somewhere or do u work on that idea immediately?? im very very curious about ur creative process PLEASE OVERSHARE because i believe there are things that are new to me. like you write and draw and it's amazing how tou do both! i'm more curious about ur writing process because i don't write much (nowadays i only journal or write diary entries, in the past i did write fanfictions but they're almost all oneshots or unplanned dropped after 2 or 3 chapters). (how) do you plan your storyline? do you consider yourself flexible (like are u comfortable with changing plans in a big project where one change could lead to other changes?). Do you beta read by yourself or is there anyone who does it? if you do it by yourself, what do you feel when re-reading your writings? i literally have sm questions but i don't wanna overwhelm you 😭😭😭 you don't need to answer if you don't want to, that's alright!!!
when u said i could overshare
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for whenever the inspiration hits, i tend to start on it immediately. writing is such a mood booster for me and i'm in a low mood most of the time so i seize the moment whenever motivation comes :'D sometimes when i'm busy (let's say school/work) and a great idea pops in (usually in quote format), i just lay it down in my gdocs. for oneshots, 1 doc would suffice. for longfics, the docs per chapter are contained in a folder.
i don't think i'm great in fan arts (i just get the boost from those who draw well—like u!) so i'm glad you appreciate it as well <3
regarding my writing process, someone actually asked me about it before! but to generalize my answer there, i ponder on 3 things (plot, characterization, & chapter study). my first fic (and my first series in general) was dusk in the brightest. i worked on chapter study first: detailed sequence of events from C1-10, vague concept in 11-15, then the rest is just 2-3 sentences of how i want the story to end. the 2nd one, character study, was smth i learned from a professor in one of my subjects when i submitted a one-act play script to her and she heavily criticized my characterization (like so badly i still get jitters remembering it) 😭 since then, i've been very wary with getting things accurate and consistent with my characters. for my plot-heavy fics, that's what i'm most serious for.
i think my flexibility (i dont even think i got that) was v challenged during the last arc of DIB because i suddenly had a complete change of mind with the ending (exactly what u had mentioned: changes that would lead one thing to the other). it was def not comfortable but a great tip (i think) to work around it is that: go back to your earlier chapters, pick up the most random scenarios you had made, then come up with a reason why that random thing ensued. an example of executing it is how isayama worked around aot's first scene (child!eren crying & mikasa being the first one he sees) by connecting it to his last scene in the manga (ofc i wouldn't assume isayama just thought abt it midway. it's just with how he executed it).
i don't have lots of friends in this app so i usually do the revisions all by myself. i'm a type of author that releases chapters impulsively—i'd publish smth that i hadn't proofread yet, read it in the app, then just do all the editing there. i'll repeat the process until i finally get satisfied. i think it's easier for me to point out mistakes when i feel the urgency to do so (like omg i have to hurry in polishing this bc readers might click anytime soon 😭) though someone helped me change POVs (from 1st to 2nd) in DIB C1-13 and let me tell u that i never thought having someone help me beta read my work could bring me so much delight.
and pls don't worry about overwhelming me! using this app and dumping all my work here are literally what keeps me sane from the overwhelming things in my life atm. to have u appreciate it gives me joy & comfort. thats why i'd be honored to answer all of ur questions :'D

Attack On Titan Season 4 Part 2: Thoughts
Tumblr media
MAL Rating: 8.77
Studio: MAPPA
Personal rating: 7.5/10
Well I've had my share of finishing the manga right after season 3 part 2. I was like everybody else, not blown away by the ending. But it didn't matter a lot to me. I appreciated the show for its jaw dropping sequences, story telling, and the mysterious world it offered us.
But yeah, I did get uninterested with the anime of Attack on titan after I finished the manga. I just couldn't get myself to watch it while it released anymore because the excitement of what happens next just wasn't there anymore. Yet after a year of not watching anime in general, I find myself back at it. So here are some thoughts I'd share on this season.
Studio change: Well one of the biggest demotivating factors of the fourth season was the studio change from WIT to MAPPA. While I think both the studios offer amazing animation to us viewers, MAPPA just did not have the time or schedule to fit my needs I guess. Studio WIT provided us with jaw dropping ODM gear blasting, smooth visuals, you could just tell they put the time and work for it. THEY GAVE US HAND DRAWN TITANS BRO. Of course the common opinion on "Mappas dark and gritty style suits the tone shift of season 4" is also something I agree on; the actual kick you got from the amazing ODM gear and titan on titan action was missing from this season. That being said, MAPPA's character design is phenomenal and some of the monologue driven scenes hit way harder.
Eren and Reiner: I have to say- I'm still astounded by these two. From Eren beginning the season with telling Reiner that he and Reiner were the same to Eren doing everything that you couldn't even think of Reiner doing. I love the duality of these two and it did make the whole show a lot more enjoyable.
Voice acting: Is it a surprise that the voice actors make Attack on Titan way more intense?
Writing: Hajime Isayama did something truly remarkable when he started Attack on titan. It wasn't a long straight road trip, but a truly intense puzzle where each piece of the puzzle is in the hands of Isayama and he knows exactly when and where he can fit it in. The story didn't feel like it was come up on the spot but rather thought out from the very beginning: each mystery reveal, character intentions make you surprised yet you don't think "this doesn't make sense" cause of course it does he set it al up.
Well in the end this final season sums up all of the show. It hasn't ended yet and I think they are planning for an anime original ending. I do think MAPPA would've done something phenomenal if they were given enough time. Cause season 4 part 3 hits the spot and they had time for it. This season lacks a lot but by no means was it a bad season. Maybe I'm just riding on the fact that no season can top season 3 part 2. But it's good to see Eren again. This character is built up from episode 1 and truly a remarkable journey to be on. I'll be keeping up with the next hour long episode and I guess we'll witness the end of Attack on titan.

ambro since we were discussing eren and reiner yesterday, i have to know… do you think floch is hot? because i’m tired of ppl pretending he isn’t. that man IS FINE AS HELL 😭😭 - 🎀
I KNOW YOU JUST DIDN'T SEND ME THIS BOW ANON 😨😨😭😭 you come into my home, judge MY baby girl reiner, say that HOBO EREN is hot, AND THEN SAY THE BIRD NESTED HAIR DICKRIDER IS SEXY?!?! i can let hobo eren slide but FLOCH nah you gotta go fr /j /s
ofc don't take what i said seriously but damn bow anon, i have crazy hear me outs too but yours are wild LOLOL
okay my actual and true honest opinion about floch, his hair from the wit seasons and s4 throws me off severely, the s4 is so 2010s yk LMFAO but idk what isayama was thinking with his old haircut, its so loopy? poofy? idk it kinda looks like a puffball toupee was slapped on there 💀 also some of his faces aren't that attractive to me and i feel like everyone knows which ones they are 😭
he isn't really one of my favorite character cause for one, he basically unintentionally-intentionally caused hange's death (i cried) and two, he got on my nerves a lot HAHA ig he's a reasonably well written character for that, he really did dedicate his heart to the goal no matter what.
i think when s4 pt 2 ended, i saw a tiktok afterwards and had THE CRAZIEST FIC IDEA that came into fruition that involved floch, eren, and cucking LMFAOOOO not bc i found floch hot but i found the idea so fucking funny that i wanted to write it out but never did cause i forgor about it until now lol

Attack on Titan
English: This has been my favorite anime for a long time. I don't think it's overrated and I think it is a masterpiece, it will always be one of my favorites. If I remember correctly, this was my fifth anime, I found it so interesting, so I watched it in 2 days. It had 74 episodes then. Before I started watching it, various videos came out on my fyp on TikTok and that made me start watching, but I totally got the wrong picture. I couldn't have guessed how well thought out and complex the story is. The vibe that this anime gives off is indescribable, I liked the third season the most, especially Grisha's backstory and one of the best arcs in the entire anime fiction - Return to Shiganshina. While I was watching, I had so many questions, there were many mysteries, but I won't say that this anime is not completely unpredictable, because there are really parts that seem obvious, but again, you can't be sure. There were many parts that gave me goosebumps, the deaths that were totally unexpected, the twists, the history, the music... Eren is one of the best main characters I've ever seen, his pain and suffering develops throughout the anime, at the beginning he so cheerful and self-confident, but the more the story develops, the more depressed he becomes, because he realizes that actually the titans are not real opponents, but humans. That's why everything becomes different in the fourth season. Many people don't like this season, but I think it's perfect. There's a huge twist, Eren becomes a villain. His character has completely changed. I'm not going to say anything more about the story itself, because I think I've already spoiled a lot, but as it says above in the account description, read this at your own risk. I forgot to say how much natural beauty this anime has, I've rarely seen it this unique yet beautiful. I read the manga, since the anime ending will be changed anyway, and I have to say that unlike the vast majority, I really liked the manga ending, I can't put into words why, but I have my reasons, and even if I could say, probably no one would even understand. I'm just going to say that those who don't like the manga are crybabies. I believe the anime ending will be worse and that MAPPA will screw everything up like they already did with the animation. But if they work together with Isayama, we might get a great ending. Omiljeni Lik: Arlert, Armin

What if Mikasa chose a different answer?!
This is based on chapter 138 leaks, so it's not 100% confirmed but..
I think that it suggests that if Mikasa choose a different answer in chapter 123 -an answer similar to chapter 50, Eren might have ran away to live together with Mikasa like in this dream in the chapter.
I just realized what Isayama meant when he made Mikasa wonder what could have changed if she chose a different answer. Because I've always wondered what could have possibly happened?!
Tumblr media
From what I understood Eren says this inside the dream in the chapter to Mikasa. In which he gave up and ran away with Mikasa.
Eren: Ever since the day…we left everything behind and fled here, we could never…2 months ago, Marley finished the war…the invasion of Paradis will soon begin…if everyone on the island don’t run away now, they’ll all be killed…Armin, he must be doing everything he can to find us…I don’t want to push Historia into hell, and let the tragedy of killing each other continue forever…but I also didn’t gain the determination to massacre people outside the Island…If so, then I’d rather spend the remaining four years of my lives quietly…here in this sequestered place…with only the two of us…Mikasa, isn’t it you…who taught me to do so
The thread on Reddit
That day: chapter 123.
Two months ago: possibly chapter 100.
We actually saw Eren hesitating about the rumbling. But keep in mind that Eren did see the memories of his future self carry the rumbling as well as other memories that we have yet to see.
Tumblr media
What's wrong with trusting Zeke for five minutes, especially after learning about how Eldians live ourside the walls and hearing about the blood tests. also, he's literally the one that made all of this possible. Is wasting three years much better?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eren had two choices: the plan Kiyome and Zeke proposed to (that doesn't include euthanasia) that'll will buy time for paradise through using the rumbling on a small scale and always keeping a royal titan at hand starting with Historia but it'll only buy some time and the war will not stop and the circle will continue (thus the first king and Zeke wanting to end Eldians), or doing these atrocities to protect the people he cares about, because after three years they still can't find any other option, and all of them will get killed if they didn't do something. The "you can't accomplish anything if you're not willing to sacrifice anything" and "you can't fight if you didn't sacrifice your humanity " theme come into play, but Hanje and the scouts aren't willing to get their hands dirty. And Eren himself isn't willing to sacrifice Historia.
I wasn't an Eremika shipper when chapter 123 came out so I read the scene differently. It connects to chapter 50, when Eren reached his lowest point and lost hope Mikasa's words and appreciation gave him hope the courage to stand up and punch a titan and a miracle happened.
I thought he was hoping for the same when he asks "what am I to you?". She said he saved her as a kid, he made her life worth living. If he could just do it again. I guess he wanted to find a reason to stop fighting and get released from the burden, he was going for something selfish to continue living? If he could makes someone's life worth living, then it's enough. This was his third and his personal choice.
I guess he thought that this will not end well either way so he'd at least make someone happy and let the first king's wish continue.

Y'know for as much as we swoon and simp and wolf-whistle over Levi, I'm not sure he actually thinks of himself as very attractive. There's his whole 2/10 in-universe attractiveness and a lifetime of mockery for his height and being an underground thug probably did a number on his self-esteem. Plus him being raised in a brothel may or may not have given him complicated feelings on being praised for his looks.
Haha, yes, well, in universe, I suppose Levi isn't considered very attractive. Though I've heard Isayama refer to Levi as "pretty" before, so I tend to think the whole 2/10 attractiveness rating has more to do with Levi's personality than his appearance. People who bring up the 2/10 rating always says things like "Levi is canonically ugly", but I don't really think that's what it refers to. Of course, being as short as he is, is often seen as an unattractive quality too, especially for a man. But I think, because Levi tends to come across as very stoic and often seemingly rude because of his blunt honesty, it's more that which turns people off, then his actual physical features. Levi isn't charismatic at all. He isn't charming.
But I agree with you that it's unlikely Levi finds himself attractive. It isn't even clear that he's ever been with anyone in any kind of romantic relationship. The only reference we have to anything like that is when he says to Zeke's crack about him not being very popular, "I was popular enough", which, given Levi's sullen expression, could be a sign of uncertainty or embarrassment, or he could mean it, and maybe plenty of others really did try to flirt with him, or get with him. Still, Levi just doesn't strike me as the type to really dwell on his appearance, or worry over it. There's hints of him being insecure over his height though, like when he grouses about how tall all of the 104th are getting, or of course his expression in Marley when that clown mistakes him for a child. He's probably been teased and harassed over his height his whole life, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a sour spot for him. He's probably been underestimated countless times because of how small he is too. There's that scene from the extra stories in "No Regrets" where something like three or four men who are all about twice Levi's size try to beat him up, and Levi hands their asses to them. The same with the arm wrestling story. People see how small he is and think he must be weak because of it. That would get annoying, no doubt.
And no doubt, Levi's experiences growing up in a brothel, and seeing his mother having to prostitute herself to keep them alive, was a traumatizing experience. We have to also remember that his mother died because of having to sell her body, and given what we know about how people from the Underground were treated, Levi was exposed from the earliest stages of his life to concepts of inequality and disenfranchisement. I think it's a reasonable thing to assume that he saw his mother being physically abused by her clients, probably even sexually abused. And who knows what even happened to him in a place like that. When Kenny found him, Levi was starving to death, he was dressed in rags, and he was filthy. That tells us plenty about the kind of neglect he was subjected to outside of his mother's care. Nobody even cared enough about him to check on him, or to realize his mother had died. Well, anyway, all this is to say Levi's relationship and understanding of sex, and romance, was probably deeply, negatively impacted by what he saw and what he was exposed to growing up, and yeah, that probably also had a negative impact on how he saw himself in relation to those sorts of things.

Seven “Best” Character Arcs in AOT by GameRant
This list is just all over the place, so here’s my two cents..... https://gamerant.com/attack-on-titan-best-character-arcs/ 7) Sasha Freaking Braus earns her rightful place on this list alongside the main three and in actuality is FAR more deserving of her placement there than some of them are. She may be a secondary character but she became a fan favorite for a reason. And I am still not about to shake on my stance that she is EASILY far better developed than Mikasa, despite only get a fraction of focus. Sasha easily could’ve been the main girl of the series and it would’ve been far more satisfying. More testament to what a criminal decision it was to allow Assassin’s Bullet to EVER be published. It was not just a bad call on Isayama’s part, it was an ABUSE.
6) Armin Arlert certainly earns his spot, going from a shirking coward to arguably a better strategist than Hange Zoe or even Erwin Smith. Too bad the final season undermines this badly with his failure to field the Colossal Titan when it really could’ve come in handy, his nonsensical promotion to commander of the Survey Corps which for all intents and purposes was functionally destroyed by that time, and of course his infamous final exchange with Eren. Nevertheless......Armin does earn his spot for his growth in the story preceding the timeskip.
5) Like Sasha, Hange Zoe’s demise is one hundred percent UNJUSTIFIED. She is a truly great character (Whether you choose to refer to her as male or female, however you roll) and like Sasha has an infectious personality, not to mention her great intellect which made her an effective warrior against the Titans. But......her character growth is kind of static. And once again, the goddamned timeskip didn’t do her any favors, making her come off as an incompetent commander who failed to subdue a betrayal from the likes of Floch and his fellow Yeagerists, and as many a fan will tell you, she NEVER GOT A BACKSTORY. Too many questions left unanswered about the Regiment’s third or fourth most senior soldier.
4) Annie Leonhart, you gotta be kidding me. Story takes almost a decade to find a place for her again and she doesn’t regret any of her past actions......And she walked for her crimes despite being partially responsible for provoking Eren into setting off the Rumbling. That’s not character development.......That’s evidence that Annie should’ve died back during the Female Titan Arc. The bare minimum is afforded to her in the timeskip after her rather contrived return. As I’ve said before, TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.
3) Mikasa Motherfucking Ackerman............Do I really need to repeat myself on this one? On why she doesn’t earn her spot on this list?
2) Eren Yeager. One word for his arc: BASTARDIZATION. People thought Anakin Skywalker’s transition to Darth Vader was handled clumsily no thanks to the prequels. But that’s peanuts compared to Eren’s descent into madness. One of the biggest criticisms of the ending of Titan is how it completely undermines Eren’s motivations for why he did everything he did, with this insultingly forced predestination subplot that shows he was evil all along......A revelation that subverts everything previously established. And all for a world-destroying revenge scheme that it’s hinted he knew was never gonna truly succeed in the end. That said, I am in the crowd that considers Eren Yeager to be effectively discredited as both a protagonist and antagonist with the events of the timeskip, and he may very well be the weakest link due to its horribly misguided execution. Eren turning evil could’ve worked, but in the end......I have concluded that it was one of the worst bad calls of Attack on Titan. He absolutely should not be on any “Best Of” lists ANYWHERE.
1) Levi, the only character who truly earned his survival in the end. Too bad he was pretty badly mutilated in the final acts. He is a true badass, but I am going to say I think his character growth is somewhat lacking. Probably because he loses all the friends relevant to his growth. And YET AGAIN, the timeskip did him no favors for sidelining him through the entire War on Paradis Arc. Levi’s saving grace is that he is enough of a badass and complex character to back up the focus he has enjoyed outside of these stumbles, so while I think his growth is lacking, he as a character is still good. And he deserved a better ending than what he got, because it wasn’t satisfying in the slightest. And he’s still an infinitely stronger character than his closest rival and mystery relative, Mikasa. Perhaps the series would’ve benefitted from him being the true main protagonist.
This list doesn’t really acknowledge the deeper problems that undermines its selections, so it’s overall not reflective of how Titan handled its main cast.
But on the plus side, whoever complied this did not include that bitch Gabi Braun, easily the most unwarranted and unnecessary character in the saga. Too often praised for a character arc that simply DOES NOT MATTER. Sorry Gabi fans, but the payoff you love to tout doesn’t exist, so arguing that she was necessary to the themes and final conclusion of Titan simply hold no water. You cut her out and not much would change, except Sasha and perhaps even Eren would’ve gotten the focus they still needed in place of this bitch.
Also, NO HISTORIA OR YMIR! Seriously, what the hell?
Thoughts on this list? Thoughts on my verdicts on this list? Do tell.

Shingeki no Kyojin's Ending Interview (May 2021)
Tumblr media
Translation commissioned by @goldsword07, DO NOT REPOST in full, always include credits and a link to this post if you use or share any parts of it.
Question: Congratulations on completing Shingeki no Kyojin’s serialization! How do you feel now that you have finished writing the final chapter?
Isayama: There’s still some work left to do when it comes to putting together the final manga volume*, so I don’t actually know how a “life without deadlines" feels like yet (laughs), but by publishing the final chapter, I feel like I can finally breathe again. However, there are still several things that need to be done.
(*Translator’s note: usually, putting together a volume includes: fixing drawing mistakes, sometimes even redrawing certain scenes if the author wasn’t satisfied with how they looked/their composition, fixing text (both wording or simply changing the Japanese characters used), drawing omake/extra pages, like the High School Caste fake previews, which usually take up 2 pages, and so on. So, of the 8 extra pages he mentions below, probably only 6 at max will be used to add new original story content.)
Q: What?! What else is there to be done?
Isayama: At first, the draft for the last page of the chapter was neatly divided into 5 panels, but I was feeling quite indecisive about it. At the time, that last page was a scene of 3 people running towards a tree on a hill. After having a meeting about that with Bakku-san and my other editors, I decided on a last-minute change, and I turned it into the one that is now published in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. The limit for each printed chapter in Bessatsu Magazine was 51 pages, but since up to 8 extra pages can be added in manga volumes, I want to finish up everything that I couldn’t draw in the printed magazine and add it in the final manga volume.
Q: As for the serialization, which spanned 11 years and a half, have there been any changes about the way you think about mangas?
Isayama: Up until recently, I had drawn as if sexism wasn’t a thing, but when drawing the Marleyan military, which was comparatively more modern, if I had added, with no explanation whatsoever, female soldiers like I did for Paradis Island, it could’ve given the impression that Marley was quite a developed nation. It would’ve felt out of place. That’s why, as long as I was drawing a story set in an era of the past, I couldn’t draw female characters as part of the top brass of the military, because it would’ve meant acting as if there was no actual history of gender discrimination at the time.
It might be a story set in a fictitious world, but if you don’t connect it in some ways to the real world, it could end up becoming a story people cannot relate to.
Q: The unraveling of events that led to the final chapter has been quite shocking. Especially when it comes to Eren…
Isayama: I have been frenetically checking any and all reactions to that. There are as many honest opinions as there are people, and they’re all correct. With how I portrayed that part, it’s not so strange that it was interpreted as if Armin accepted the massacre. My portrayal was lacking. Armin didn’t approve of the despicable measures taken by Eren, but he ended up benefiting from the mass slaughter, regardless of his intentions. Armin, who couldn’t possibly understand Eren, faced their last farewell with a firm “Thank you for becoming a mass murderer for us”, essentially conveying how he himself was also an accomplice. He wanted to feel closer to Eren, even if just a little. I realized the final stage in particular had too difficult themes, and my portrayal was inadequate. I deeply regret that I wasn’t able to fully express them in the manga proper.
I’ve been drawing this manga for 11 years and a half, and when I completed the manuscript I truly believed that “everyone will be happy with this”. I was conceited. I apologize to those who have supported me until the end but have felt let down by the ending.

Q: During these 11 years and a half of serialization, have there been any memorable events?
Isayama: I’m happy that I could deepen the relationship with my assistants, as “manga friends”. When the serialization started, everyone was in their twenties, but now some of them are married and have even become parents, and we have become close family friends.
Q: Was the manga becoming an anime a memorable moment, too?
Isayama: The anime adaptation can certainly be considered another part of Shingeki no Kyojin. Lots of people got to know this story through watching the anime. Personally, it was refreshing for me too, as I could experience the story anew. In addition to that, the characters were taken out of my hands - in a good way - by the directors and voice actors, they began moving as independent “existences”. It was a first and interesting experience.
Q: Do you have a favorite scene?
Isayama: As far as drawings go, the scene I like the most is the one in chapter 104, “Victors”, when the Jaw Titan claws at the Attack Titan. Besides the fact that I feel like I can’t draw anything better than that, there also haven’t been that many action scenes with titans after chapter 104.
Q: Well then, what about your best chapter?
Isayama: One of them is chapter 71, “Bystander”. I feel like that chapter exceeded my abilities at the time. I like the way it doesn’t feel like “Shingeki no Kyojin”, as the spotlight was on the life of a single character who isn’t involved with the original story.
Q: Chapter 69, “Friends”, also depicts some characters’ personal life.
Isayama: I like that chapter, too! At the time of drawing its draft, I flattered myself with words such as “Uh? Aren’t I so mature?!”. Normally, I would draw the main story’s continuation, but in chapters 69 and 71’s case, it felt like I was drawing stories that were complete on their own.
Q: With the start of the Marley arc in chapter 91, “The other side of the ocean”, both titans and modern times’ weapons made an appearance in battle.
Isayama: That battle scene was the time I had the most fun while drawing mangas, I was in a state of total concentration and full energy.
Q: How has Shingeki no Kyojin been for you?
Isayama: It’s as if youth has come a bit late, a third of my life has been packed into this work. …Of course, there have been hard times, too, but it’s been a chapter of my life that normally you wouldn’t be able to experience and even now I struggle to think it was real. Although I’ve been spoiled by my readers, I had planned to draw all the while accepting even harsh opinions.
Q: Finally, a message to the readers, please!
Isayama: Through Shingeki no Kyojin, I could connect with an unfathomable number of people. I’ve been happy to share this time of my life with my readers, which is something that, if I had had a normal life, I would have never experienced.
Also, now that the serialization is over, I have been freed, so I want to stroll around a small city with a can of One Cup sake in one hand. That’s what I would call freedom.
