for future me's reference, and anyone who cares as much about this character (""""") as i do, a hopefully comprehensive log of the now-unemployed local philosopher who doesn't believe in color television (a joke about the several TV broadcasts from lunar orbit done by the crew during the flight) as reported by ground control during the Apollo 10 moon mission:
day 2: A now unemployed philosopher has pointed out that due to your efforts color television has reached new heights.
day 3: It's been estimated that over a billion people have seen at least some of the television pictures from the Apollo 10. Whether you want to be or not, you're famous. But in spite of this enthusiasm, that now-unemployed local philosopher to whom we referred yesterday, says now he thinks color television is on its way out, way out.
day 4: And do you remember that unemployed local philosopher? He now says that while he believes in the future of color television, he thinks that because of your flight, it will go round and round in people's minds for a while yet.
day 6: Oh, yes, we heard again from that unemployed local philosopher. With all the excitement he lost his head and digressed from his favorite subject of color television to say that, "For three fellows who, by their own admission, could not figure out which way was up, you sure did a doggone respectable job yesterday."
day 7: Yes, I thought you might change your mind. By the way, the unemployed local philosopher now says that due to your efforts, color television is now on its way back.
day 8: And the unemployed local philosopher- He just showed up unexpectedly, and he says that color TV is on its way back, just as he predicted, and it's going to make a real splash around here pretty soon.
day 8, later: (Young, during telecast) This is your old retired philosopher speaking to you from outer space, and telling you that TV is on its way back.
full daily newspapers under the cut.
Day 2:
043:43:45 Lousma: Okay. You are right in the headlines. Among the biggest of news events of yesterday, were the three astronauts of Apollo 10. Millions of people throughout the world saw some or all of what one wire-service writer called the "Mini show". Tom Stafford was called the star, and John Young the supporting player, because he appeared upside-down throughout the show. Gene Cernan was listed as camera man. A now unemployed philosopher has pointed out that due to your efforts color television has reached new heights. Coleman Hawkins, jazz saxophonist, died at the age of 60. He was one of the innovators of Be-Bop during the late 1940's. President Nixon is reportedly in favor of keeping the 10-percent surtax past its deadline of June 30, 1969. His spokesman, speaking to a House of Representatives committee, proposed that the 10-percent surtax be extended to the end of this year, and then lowered to 5 percent. President Nixon also announced that he will meet with South Vietnamese President There within the next 2 weeks, probably at Midway Island or some other Pacific Ocean location. In the sports world, there were no major league baseball games played yesterday. Gardner Dickinson won the National Invitational Golf Tournament at Ft. Worth on Sunday with a two-under-par 278. The PGA tour moves to Atlanta this week for the Atlanta Classic. 043:45:31 Lousma: One closing note of special interest to the Apollo 10 crew is this story: Chief Winnie Red Fox of Philadelphia, who remembers his Uncle Crazy Horse fighting at the Little Big Horn, would like Man to leave the Moon alone because it's ruining the rainfall. The 99-year old Ogalala Sioux Chief summed up his reaction to the Apollo 10 moonshot in this manner, and I quote: "It doesn't seem to rain much since man started messing around with the Moon." [Laughter.] And we're tracking you guys out there now at 154,221 miles, and you have slowed down to 300 - 3,000 - correction 3,853 feet per second.
day 3:
070:31:06 Lousma: Roger. During the night, you entered the lunar sphere of influence: at 61:51, to be exact. And you are now 13,957 miles [25,848 km] from the Moon at 4,056 feet per second [1,236 m/s]. Technically, there is no change in the CSM systems status or your LM heater currents, and you are ahead of your Flight Plan on all consumables. And now the newspaper: the flight of Apollo 10 has been temporarily knocked out of the lead story position in the Houston Post. William Forster has resigned his position as Administrator of the Harris County Hospital, but never fear! As the Apollo 10 nears the Moon, news services around the world have followed the flight. It's been estimated that over a billion people have seen at least some of the television pictures from the Apollo 10. Whether you want to be or not, you're famous. But in spite of this enthusiasm, that now-unemployed local philosopher to whom we referred yesterday, says now he thinks color television is on its way out, way out. In other news highlights, Governor Nelson Rockefeller continues his South American tour. His reception in Peru was not too friendly. President Nixon will meet with South Vietnamese Premier Thieu on the island of Midway on June 8. Leaders of the Presbyterian Church, meeting in San Antonio, have called for the Nixon administration to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba. Texas International Airlines has won the privilege of sending the first plane into the new Houston International Airport on June 8; 99 VIPs will be aboard the flight that will depart from Hobby Airport and land at 1 minute after midnight. A 2-day open house featuring air show will be held on May 31 and June 1. The Soviet Union launched an unmanned spacecraft into orbit yesterday. It had been designated Cosmos 282. An old buddy of ours, world traveler Frank Borman, has arrived in Prague, Czechoslovakia, for the 12th plenary session of COSPAR. Although the Czech press did not mention Frank's arrival, there were several hundred people on hand to greet him. Frank waved back and said, "Hey, Hey." Frank doesn't speak Czech too well, you know. In sports news, it was Houston over Montreal 5 to nothing, and Cincinnati over Philadelphia 4 to nothing. In the American League, Detroit defeated Chicago 7 to 6, New York over Oakland 2 to 1, Washington beat Seattle 6 to 5, Cleveland over Kansas City 4 to 1, and Minnesota downed Baltimore 3 to 2 in 13 innings. In today's big sports story, the former scourge of the Big Ten, the University of Chicago, will resume intercollegiate football. This fall, the Maroons, once coached by the famous Amos Alonzo Stagg, will play such big midwestern football giants as Wheaten College, Lake Forest College, North Central Illinois, and Valparaiso at Indiana. That's the University of Chicago, that's a town up north, you know. In golf, today is Pro-Am day at the Atlanta Classic. That's today's newspaper.
day 4:
092:59:32 Lousma: Okay. One kind of interesting thing was John's horoscope this morning; says, "Everybody you know has something helpful to offer. Listen carefully while you make the rounds quickly. Put in a busy day and assemble your results in the evening." Now here goes the news. Springfield, Massachusetts: students at Springfield Technical College told President Edmund T. Garvey they were taking over the Administration Building. Garvey was nonplussed. The students, about 40 in number, marched into the building Wednesday night armed with mops, brooms, scrub brushes, and staged a "clean-in." They said they would clean all night. A student spokesman said the clean-in at the 1,200-member campus was to support the administrative policies of the 2-year-old school. Safi, Morocco: on Friday, Thor Heyerdahl will set out from here to cross the Atlantic in a papyrus boat. The man who must keep his papyrus boat together with rope and string bought his third wife this year, and is now complaining about the price. She cost about 60 dollars in Egypt, much more than the going rate in Chad, where Abu Debrine learned how to make papyrus boats and hitched onto Heyerdahl's expedition. If he succeeds in reaching Mexico in his boat, modeled after a 4,700-year-old Egyptian craft, Heyerdahl will consider he has strengthened the argument that the great early civilization of the Americas learned from the Pharaohs. Debrine is packing pictures of wives A and B, smiling side by side, into his kit for the reed boat trip. A photo of wife C, who has less seniority but is more expensive, gets a less prominent place. Good grief, Charlie Brown. Paris: Allied negotiators headed into the Vietnam talks today with what sources close to the meeting said were optimistic that discussions of proposals by President Nixon and the Viet Cong could bring progress. U.S. delegation sources said Henry Cabot Lodge, Chief U.S. negotiator, would comment, on the Viet Cong's 10-point peace plan Washington said included some points meriting further study. The chief North Vietnamese negotiator indicated he and his Viet Cong counterpart were still studying the Nixon eight-point proposal. Washington: Warren E. Burger, an Appeals Court judge with a reputation for being strong on law and order, was picked Wednesday by President Nixon to be Chief Justice of the United States. Burger, 61, a member of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington since he was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, is known as a strict constructionist, the type of judge Nixon promised to elevate to the court during his campaign, last fall. Plymouth, England: solo around the world sailor, Nigel Tetley, was pulled from the Atlantic by a tanker crew today when his boat sank 14 days from home. Tetley's wife, on hearing the news, said, "It is our home that is gone. All my pots and pans have gone to the bottom of the sea." Tetley was competing in a global race sponsored by a London newspaper. Moscow: Moscow TV showed the Apollo 10 astronauts in a 1-minute broadcast. It said it was live from the American space capsule. And do you remember that unemployed local philosopher? He now says that while he believes in the future of color television, he thinks that because of your flight, it will go round and round in people's minds for a while yet. Here is a sports story: Houston 3, Montreal 2, and Houston has just climbed out of the cellar. New York 5, Atlanta 0; Chicago at Los Angeles, a night game; just heard from the back room that Los Angeles beat Chicago. Over.
day 6:
18:58:40 Lousma: Okay, Apollo 10. You've got LOS and AOS. We are well caught up on information going up, so let's go up with the news now. Prague, Czechoslovakia: US astronaut Frank Borman, one of three lunar pioneers on the Apollo 8 Moon flight last year has been awarded the Czech Academy of Sciences Gold Medal for service to science and humanity. About 1,000 Czechs, shouting "Long live, glory, glory" greeted Borman, first American to win the award, as he stepped from the Academy building, Thursday. "By the end of 1970," Borman told the news conference, "we'll be able to take scientists and doctors of many nations on flights to the Moon." [Laughter.] New York: Johnny Carson was honored Thursday as the Performer of the Year by the International Radio and Television Society. Carson told the audience at the Americana Hotel that he was once chewed out by a station manager for oversleeping and missing a broadcast. "So I got cocky and told them that someday I would have my own network show and win an important award," Carson said. And the station manager said, "The day that happens, they'll send a man to the Moon." Hong Kong: Communist Chinese authority [laughter] - thought you'd get a chuckle out of that. Communist Chinese authorities have confiscated a Hong Kong fishermans permit because he played hookey from Mao Tse Tung's thought study classes. A Hong Kong government spokesman said today, "The licenses allowed him to operate in Hong Kong and Chinese waters." Washington: one of our old friends, Charles A. Lindbergh, the Lone Eagle of pioneer aviation, says rocket pioneer Robert Goddard told him in 1929 a Moon voyage was theoretically impossible, theoretically impos - correction - theoretically possible, but economically improbable. In a rare public utterance, the reporters and news photographers barred, Lindbergh philosophized about the future of American aviation, and reminisced about Goddard. He said Goddard told him it was possible to send a multistage rocket to the Moon; then he smiled a little bit and said, "It might cost a million dollars and of course that was out." [Laughter.] Carlton, England: Fred Alder, 67, saved all his life to buy an 11-bedroom house on the sea to give children from poor homes a vacation. "It's the happiest day of my life," Alder said, as the first contingent of 20 youngsters arrived at the house that cost him almost $20,000. He said 200 children will have 10 days at his new seaside home by the end of summer. And a trust fund has been set up for the future. Oh, yes, we heard again from that unemployed local philosopher. With all the excitement he lost his head and digressed from his favorite subject of color television to say that, "For three fellows who, by their own admission, could not figure out which way was up, you sure did a doggone respectable job yesterday." And here's the sports news. Houston beat Montreal 7 to 4. Atlanta beat New York 15 to 3. And the Cubs defeated Los Angeles last night 3 to 1. John Young has had these interesting astrocasts. Today it is, "Keep all operations above board. Confidential transactions are apt to blow up later with considerable embarrassment for all. Travel is better postponed; the people you would go to see are not yet set for the visit." [Laughter.] And in the golf world, at the Atlanta Classic, the first round leaders are George Knudson and Jackie Cupit, under par, 67. That's the news. Over.
day 7:
145:58:52 Lousma: OK. Apollo 10 morning newscast from the Manned Spacecraft Center Public Affairs Office. Everybody's really raving about your latest television pictures. They say, the television pictures of the Moon beamed to Earth from Apollo 10 shortly after TEI are being described as the most spectacular of the mission. Because of the early morning schedule for much of the U.S., the transmission is being replayed at various hours throughout the day. However, the consensus of opinion here is the same as yours, utterly fantastic. Aside from the Apollo 10 news, here is a summary of other news highlights and a look at sports. President Nixon took time off from his busy schedule to enjoy a band concert on the White House lawn yesterday with the Soviet Ambassador Dobrynin. Music was provided by the University of Minnesota Concert Band that had just returned from a concert tour of the Soviet Union. Dobrynin was so pleased with the concert that he suggested that the tuba player be named Secretary of State. Both Dobrynin and President Nixon were observed tapping their toes and clapping hands as the band played "Minnesota, Hats Off To Thee." Another historic voyage was scheduled to begin today from the coast of Morocco. Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl was scheduled to leave the North African coast for an ocean voyage to the Caribbean Islands. Remember, he's the guy who had the crewman aboard that had three wives, the last one costing the outrageous sum of 60 bucks. Anyway, Heyerdahl and his crew of six are sailing in an exact copy of an ancient Egyptian sailing vessel. The boat is made of papyrus reeds. The U.S. Senate is expected to give quick confirmation of Judge Warren Burger as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice-Designate Burger is reported to be a law-and-order-type judge.
The City of Houston is without a symphony orchestra. Musicians rejected a 3-year contract proposal yesterday. Andre Previn also conducted his last concert with the orchestra. Former Governor John Connally told graduating students of the University of Saint Thomas that, despite the problems within the United States, our country is the greatest organized society this world has ever known. Connally received an honorary doctorate at the school's commencement exercises. Here's a look at sports. The Astros shut out the New York Mets last night by a score of 7 to 0. A crowd of almost 11,000 saw Tom Griffin pitch a five-hit shutout, striking out 13 batters. The Cubs' Ken Holtzman shut out San Diego 6 to 0, and it was Philadelphia 6, Atlanta 2. The Cubs now lead their division by five games while Houston is nine games out of first place in the Western Division of the National League. One of these days Oklahoma will have a baseball team. The weather is good for time trials at the Indianapolis Speedway. The weather is good for time trials at the Indianapolis Speedway today. A.J. Foyt and Roger McCluskey are expected to battle it out for the pole position. In previous runs around the track, Foyt has done over 172 miles an hour [277 kph] and McCluskey over 170 miles per hour [274 kph]. Mario Andretti smashed into a wall yesterday and totaled his Lotus-Ford, but was not seriously injured. He came back to drive a test lap in his backup car at a speed of 169 miles an hour [272 kph]. Foyt will try to win an unprecedented fourth "Indy 500" race. Augie Erturth is reported to have resigned his post as assistant athletic director at Rice University. Athletic Director Bo Hagan is expected to make the announcement today and appoint a successor to Erturth. Pete Brown shot a 66 to take the halfway lead in the Atlanta Classic Golf Tournament. After 36 holes, Brown has a card of 135. And the big name golfers are all down in the pack, three to six strokes off the pace. Boxer George Forman has signed up a manager and will make his professional boxing debut at Madison Square Garden in June. The 1968 Olympic champ is, according to his new manager, Houston's first heavyweight champion of the world. The Dallas Cowboys yesterday announced that reserve quarterback Jerry Rhome has been traded to the Cleveland Browns. In return, the Browns will set an undisclosed 1969 draft choice. The Cowboys will still have Don Meredith and Craig Morton in addition to Roger Staubach the former Navy great who joins the team this fall. And a final note, preparations are being made for a hero's welcome for the Apollo 10 crew at Pago Pago. Governor Owen Aspinall says he will personally supervise the welcoming. Over.
146:04:11 Stafford: [Laughter.] Roger. Houston. That's quite a bit of news. And tell the governor down in Pago Pago we appreciate it but he doesn't have to go to any special effort. Over. 146:04:24 Lousma: Yes. Well. I didn't read the last sentence here. It said. "Maybe there will be dancing girls there"; But now you know. And by the way, the unemployed local philosopher now says that... 146:04:36 Stafford: Oh, well. If he wants to go to the special effort. 146:04:41 Lousma: Yes, I thought you might change your mind. By the way, the unemployed local philosopher... 146:04:46 Stafford: [Garble]. 146:04:47 Lousma: ...now says that due to your efforts, color television is now on its way back. 146:04:59 Stafford: Roger. Give our best to the unemployed philosopher there. And that total situation down in Samoa sounds like it's - Is that going to be a top hat or topless type of affair? Over. 146:05:24 Lousma: Just come as you are, Tom.
day 8:
163:14:04 Lousma: Hey, Gene. I've got your astrocast here. We're trying to whip up some news, but I think it will be a while. Yours is... 163:14:13 Cernan: OK. Go ahead. 163:14:14 Lousma: This Sunday may find you in some quandary over home conditions. There should be some help available. Don't make smart remarks about Marines. 163:14:31 Cernan: Who wrote that? Did the great philosopher write that? 163:14:36 Lousma: The unemployed philosopher. He's got the day off today. 163:14:46 Cernan: Im still waiting for that special song. 163:14:53 Lousma: And here's John's. His money has to be spent today on institutions and the use of them for various purposes. Take the time to check everything out before doing anything drastic. Finding out the "why" in a situation may be more important than any other determination. 163:15:16 Young: They got me there, all right. 163:15:23 Lousma: Yes. And, Tom. Your relatives and neighbors expect to see you this Sunday. Do the amenities gratefully. Make the rounds; there are gifts for you here and there. Then seek solitude. Reprimand all those in your command who make smart remarks about Marines. Over. 163:15:44 Stafford: [Laughter.] 163:15:57 Stafford: Tremendous, Jack. Just tremendous. 163:16:02 Cernan: Hey, Jack. Don't you call us. We'll call you. 163:16:13 Young: Are you just coming on duty, or are you leaving? 163:16:16 Lousma: Just coming on. 163:16:20 Cernan: Oh, my golly. 163:16:22 Lousma: I've been out guarding the gate all night, of course. 163:16:29 Stafford: [Laughter.]
167:14:59 Lousma: Apollo 10, Houston. We've got another news item here. In the Atlanta Classic, Bruce Crampton is leading. In second place by two strokes, Bert Yancy, Bruce Develin, and Gary Player. And the unemployed local philosopher- He just showed up unexpectedly, and he says that color TV is on its way back, just as he predicted, and it's going to make a real splash around here pretty soon. 167:15:28 Stafford: [Laughter.] Roger. Thank you very much for the news there, Jack.
day 8 telecast:
186:56:03 Lousma: Roger, Tom. And I think the people around the world are kind of sad to see this to be the last TV shots from space for a while, and I know that they've been very interested and enthusiastic about the pictures and the total flight. 186:56:22 Stafford: Roger. It's kind of a feeling of the same way for us not to see these beautiful views. Of course, we're certainly looking forward to being back on the good Earth in about 5 hours. And it's really been a fantastic overall flight for us, and some of the experiences that we've had all the way, from liftoff on the Saturn V to seeing the Earth and Moon, the lunar orbit work, and the climb out from the Moon and all the way back. And why don't we take you inside the cockpit for one quick minute? 186:57:31 Lousma: OK. We have it inside the cabin now, Tom, and weve got a pretty good look at a clean shaven Command Module pilot there. 186:57:42 Young: This is your old retired philosopher speaking to you from outer space, and telling you that TV is on its way back. 186:57:54 Lousma: Roger. Thank you for those words from the old retired philosopher. 186:57:59 Young: We have a little more work to do and then we'll be back with you and it will sure be great to be back. It's been utterly unbelievable, the mission has. We've really enjoyed every bit of it, so until we see you again, we'll say so long.

President Biden announced on Wednesday an unprecedented plan to forgive hundreds of billions of dollars in federal student debt. The controversial bill has stirred comments amount those who have already paid their debt off and those that now will not have to pay this debt. There are many wrinkles in the bill that yet need clarification. Your loan type will help you determine if you qualify; also if you received a Pell Grant, you may have additional relief. The AICPA has announced the following guidance for you to use to determine if you qualify. Direct Loans qualify for forgiveness Big picture, the vast majority – roughly 37 million borrowers – will be eligible for the forgiveness based on their loan type (and then as long as they also fall under the income cap), because their debt is under what’s called the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. That includes Direct Stafford Loans, and all Direct subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans. Under the Direct program, Parent Plus and Grad Loans, are also eligible for the relief, said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. Then it gets more complicated. Relief may not include ‘commercially held FFEL loans’ As of now, the U.S. Department of Education is saying that loans qualify if they’re held by the department. You may be wondering: Aren’t all federal student loans held by the government? Not necessarily. Initially, the federal government did not give out student loans, instead, it guaranteed the debt provided by banks and nonprofit lenders, under what is now known as the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program. But nearly 10 million people still hold FFEL loans. Mark Kantrowitz, U. S. Department of Education, said, “about half are held by the U.S. Department of Education and about half by commercial lenders.” There are two reasons the government may now hold FFEL loans. When these loans go into default, the private companies that previously owned them transfer them over to a guarantee agency that services the debt on behalf of the federal government, Kantrowitz said. The other reason is that the government bought back some of the loans during the 2008 credit crisis. Because much of the debt is still commercially held, and not with the Education Department, there’s concern that it won’t be included in Biden’s forgiveness. These loans also weren’t covered by the Covid pandemic-era payment pause on federal student loans, prompting criticism from advocates. “The broad student loan forgiveness is available for the same loans as are eligible for the payment pause,” Kantrowitz said. “It does not include commercially held FFEL loans.” Borrowers eager to know where their FFEL loans are held can go to Studentaid.gov and sign in with your FSA ID. Then go to the “My Aid” tab, and search for your loans. There’s currently no deadline by which they need to do this, but presumably there will be one. As a result, experts recommend borrowers in this situation act quickly. The broad student loan forgiveness is available for the same loans as are eligible for the payment pause and interest waiver. It does not include commercially held FFEL loans. Some Perkins loans, private debt is likely excluded Another type of loan may also be excluded from forgiveness because it’s not in the government’s hands, Kantrowitz said: certain loans from the Federal Perkins Loan Program. Some of these loans are with the Education Department, but most are held by colleges. If you pay your monthly loan bill to one of the government’s loan servicers, you should be able to get the forgiveness, Kantrowitz said, but if your payments are sent to another private lender, you’re probably out of luck. All private student loans are also excluded.

first choice (part 2)
2 weeks later
emma blew on her gloved hands to try to warm them up. she was wearing at least three layers, a scarf, boots, and she still felt the freezing cold in her bones. noah looked over at his shivering girlfriend and chuckled, putting his arm around her and rubbing her shoulders.
“how are you not cold?” emma whined, turning her body toward him to get as close to his body heat as possible.
“i’m always warm and it’s technically above freezing,” noah said, bending down to kiss her forehead.
berry high and eastridge had a partnership with a local community program that helped coordinate and fund group college visits. emma had volunteered to help coordinate schedules across schools. it took a little bit of convincing, and promising a lot of kisses, but noah agreed to come on the trip. even though the NAUA scholarship didn’t pan out, emma was hoping that hartfeld’s second chance scholarship might still be an option for him.
“we’ll take a 15-minute break everyone, feel free to grab some coffee!” the tour guide announced as they approached the campus coffee shop.
“oh, thank god!” emma muttered, half-dragging noah with her as she raced to stand in line.
“hot chocolate or coffee?” noah asked, wrapping his arms around her waist once they got in line.
they approached the front as emma still debated her order. “vanilla latte, please!” she said, kissing him on the cheek before going to find a table.
she sat down next to the red-headed tour guide. “hey emily, how easy is it to find flexible part-time jobs on campus? my boyfriend’s a little worried about balancing everything.”
emily smiled. “first of all, you guys are such a cute couple. second, it’s pretty easy to find a job on campus or close to campus. but how to balance it all might be a better question for my boyfriend, zig, who took a full course load while playing football and working to support his family. i’ll see if he can take his break now.”
emily walked to the counter as noah came back with their drinks. emma accepted the warm mug gratefully and sighed as the latte warmed her cold fingers. noah slid in next to her on the couch, putting an arm around her shoulders.
the tall, tanned brunette barista sauntered over with emily, who quickly introduced everyone. emma shook zig’s hand and was surprised that he and noah went in for a fist bump.
“have you guys met?” emily asked, also seeming surprised.
zig nodded. “i helped prep noah for his interview with dean stafford for the second chance scholarship.”
emma’s eyes widened with recognition. “oh, you’re the one chris mentioned when i spoke to him about the scholarship!”
“chris powell? yeah, he’s one of our best friends and team captain. he showed me your film, noah, and we made sure to pass it on to coach with our recommendations. it was a no brainer, especially hearing about your story from emma,” zig said warmly as emily cuddled in close to his side.
emma tensed and looked down. a couple of weeks ago, the hartfeld football coach reached out to noah “out of the blue” and recommended he apply to hartfeld formally. that noah would be a top candidate for the second chance scholarship, so long as he was willing to play football for hartfeld and kept his grades up. the captain of the team then reached out and walked noah through the application process and connected him with zig to prep for the interviews, which not-so-coincidentally aligned with the trip’s scheduled visit to hartfeld. of course, all of that happened after emma found chris’ contact information on the scholarship website and spoke to him about noah.
zig kept talking about how the scholarship changed his life and made it so he could finally pursue the college education he wanted and was able to put the stigma of his past behind him. noah asked zig if he could have a moment alone with him. emma bit her lip nervously as she walked away with emily to give them some privacy.
“is everything okay?” emily asked.
“um, well, he may or may not be mad at me for going behind his back and submitting his football film to chris. i came across the second chance scholarship during my research and thought it would be perfect for noah. i didn’t tell him about it because i didn’t want to get his hopes up,” emma said quickly, a knot of anxiety forming in her stomach.
“well, it sounds to me like he’s very lucky to have someone in his life who cares so much about him and his future. zig and chris also wouldn’t be here if someone didn’t give them a second chance. it inspired chris to create the scholarship, and i really hope things work out for you guys,” emily said reassuringly as zig and noah fist bumped. she walked over to give zig a kiss and emma watched apprehensively as noah approached her, his face thoughtful.
“i’m sorry for going behind your back, babe. you were just so upset about losing the NAUA scholarship, i didn’t want to get your hopes up but i did a lot of research and thought the second chance scholarship would be perfect, since it covers tuition, room and board, and books, with football and boxing fulfilling the activity requirement, so any extra money you make can be sent to your mom. i had to convince ava to help me sneak into the A/V office, and i owe michael a big favor since he put the highlight reel together quickly to make the deadline, so i didn’t have time to explain, and…” emma blurted out. “are you mad?”
noah gave her such a tender look that the tension in her body disappeared. “how could i be mad at my gorgeous, selfless girlfriend who found a way that i could go to college while dealing with her own applications? but i don’t like that you felt as though you needed to keep this a secret. i want us to be a team, okay?”
emma tilted her head up and leaned in to give him a soft kiss. “okay. and i couldn’t just not help you. i care about you, babe. you mean a lot to me.”
noah lowered his head until his forehead was touching hers and closed his eyes. “what did i do to deserve you?”
she laughed. “you chose me, remember?”
“and you chose me,” noah said softly, leaving a kiss on her nose and lacing his fingers with hers as they left the coffee shop to rejoin the tour.
4 weeks later
emma was in front of her house at 7am, waiting for mason. she had texted him a few days ago asking if she could join him for a run. she was pleasantly surprised when he replied but she still wasn’t sure what to expect. she looked carefully at mason’s face as he jogged up to her house, trying to gauge his mood. he gave her a nod and she fell into place jogging beside him. when they finally reached the park and took a break, emma turned to face mason.
“thanks for hanging out with me again, i’ve missed you,” she said, her voice hopeful.
mason gave her a longing look before a small smile appeared on his face. “i’ve missed you too, em. i wish things could go back to normal with us, but i don’t think my feelings for you are going to go away anytime soon. and it hurts to think about you with noah.”
“i felt the same when you were with ava and i’m sorry if i hurt you. mason, you’ll always have a special place in my heart but i also really want my best friend back. i think we just maybe outgrew the old way we used to be friends with all the changes that happened this year, and with us going to different colleges and experiencing different things, maybe we just need to find a new way to be there for each other,” emma said slowly. she had given this a lot of thought over the last couple of months.
mason nodded thoughtfully, seeming to agree. “yeah, maybe we can talk over a milkshake?”
they spent the rest of the morning sharing a malted peanut butter milkshake and catching up on everything and anything. as the sun rose high in the sky, they decided to order food and continue talking like they used to, and emma was hopeful that they would be able to keep finding moments like this to reconnect even when school and life kept them miles apart.
* * * * * emma kept hitting the refresh button on her phone mail app for the results of the photo contest she was expecting to hear about. she was sitting in the park with noah, who was attempting to study for midterms but kept looking over at emma with amusement.
“staring at your phone isn’t going to make the results appear magically,” he teased.
emma put her phone down and sighed. “i know, i’m just really anxious.”
“come here,” noah said, putting his book aside and pulling emma on to his lap. he wrapped one arm around her waist and used the other to draw her face closer to his. he left a line of kisses starting at her neck, working his way across her jaw, and up to her cheek. emma closed her eyes, tilting her chin toward noah so their lips could meet in a sweet kiss. she brought a hand up to the back of his neck and shifted so she could deepen the kiss when she heard the ping! from her phone. she quickly climbed off noah’s lap to grab her phone and read the new email that had arrived.
“oh my god, i won! i can’t believe it!” emma shoved her phone in front of her boyfriend’s face, who quickly scanned the congratulatory email and broke out into a wide grin.
he stood up, pulling emma up with him so he could wrap his arms around her and swing her around. “congratulations, babe. i knew you could do it! remember what i said when we picked that one?” noah asked, setting her back down on the ground and peppering her face with kisses.
after an hour of reading her write-ups for both photo options and looking at each photo carefully, noah grabbed the first one and handed it back to emma. “you should use this one. your write-up definitely brings the viewer into the moment and make it seem like so much more happened than the moment itself. and personally, it means the most to me since i was thinking of you when i scored that touchdown. i was so happy you were finally mine, the adrenaline made me feel like i could do anything,” he said, smiling fondly.
“how could i forget? i made sure to include it in my college applications because of that,” emma said, smiling.
6 weeks later
emma smoothed out the invisible wrinkles in her navy fit-and-flare dress outside of the neighborhood restaurant noah first took her to when he asked her to homecoming. it quickly became a fixture for them as a date night spot, but tonight was going to be the first time she met his mom and sister. to say she was nervous was a huge understatement.
noah took her hand and gave it a squeeze. “there’s no need to be nervous, i promise,” he said gently, giving her a kiss on the cheek before leading her toward a booth in the back of the restaurant.
emma waved shyly as they approached the booth. “hi, mrs. harris; hazel. it’s really nice to meet you,” she greeted tentatively. she was surprised when mrs. harris stepped out of the booth and wrapped her up in a big hug.
“it’s so good to finally meet you, dear. i’m so glad you could join us to celebrate!”
the rest of the evening was pleasant as they recounted how noah got selected for the second chance scholarship. emma and noah held hands under the table throughout dinner, giving each other side glances and small smiles when they thought his family wouldn’t notice. noah looked pointedly in the other direction when they started sharing embarrassing childhood stories, and emma just laughed along until the conversation eventually transitioned to emma’s future.
“so, emma, what are your college plans?” mrs. harris asked.
she saw noah shift in his seat and avoid her gaze. she hadn’t made any decisions yet but they also hadn’t really talked about their relationship long-term.
“um, well, i plan on focusing on fine arts so i’m deciding between the california institute of design and columbia university in new york,” she replied quietly.
mrs. harris clapped her hands. “oh my, those sound prestigious! i’m sure your family would want you to stay close.”
emma smiled half-heartedly and nodded. “yeah, california would be much closer to home.” but on the complete opposite side of the country from hartfeld, she thought glumly to herself.
dinner wrapped up shortly and after saying goodbye and promising to have dinner with them again soon, emma sat quietly in the drivers’ seat of her used SUV. her dad finally caved and bought her a car as an 18th birthday and congratulatory present after her acceptances came in. it was a safe, reliable car, perfect for the eventual long drives to and from college but emma was just glad to finally have a car of her own. emma looked over at noah with a twinge of sadness as she drove silently back to his house, stopping a couple blocks away so they could have some privacy.
“we should probably talk about what’s next for us, right?” she asked hesitantly.
noah shrugged. “we still have time before you have to decide. but honestly emma, i want you to make the decision that’s best for you. promise me you won’t factor me or our relationship into your decision.”
emma looked helplessly at how the moonlight seemed to sharpen the contours of noah’s face in the most romantic way; his eyes shining sincerely with every word he said. how could this kind, sensitive, gorgeous guy not factor into her decision? she sighed and nodded, “i’ll try.”
🔥⚡🔥⚡
he gave her a sympathetic but understanding look before taking off his seatbelt and reaching toward her. emma obliged, turning the engine off and climbing over the center console to straddle his lap. noah lowered his seat back, wrapping one arm around emma’s waist and the other around her neck, bringing her in for a kiss. emma sighed contentedly at the soft, sweet kisses that quickly grew heated. she ground her hips into his, trying to get her body as close to his as possible, as her hands tangled themselves in his hair. she moaned as he started kissing down her neck to suck gently on the soft patch of skin near her collarbone, one hand moving to palm her breast and the other trailing up the inside of her thigh.
they had agreed over winter break to go slow and that sex would be off the table for now, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t still have fun. emma was starting to get addicted to his touch and wanted to speed up her readiness for him even though logically she knew they needed to take their time; noah had more experience from his time in juvie but understood more than she did that he needed to go slow with her. they ended up meeting somewhere in the middle. emma let out a soft hiss as his fingers started stroking the fabric of her underwear and she ached to feel him inside. he pulled back to look in her eyes for permission and when she nodded, her lips swollen and eyes lidded, his finger dove underneath the fabric.
she could sense the smirk on noah’s face before it appeared as her hips started grinding against his fingers of their own accord and crashed her lips into his. he quickly added a second finger and emma moaned against his mouth; she wanted more. as his fingers continued their steady strokes, she unzipped his jeans as fast as she could, cupping him in her hands through the fabric of his underwear before diving her hand beneath his waistband. she felt him stiffen even more once she freed his cock from his pants and started stroking him; knowing that she caused this reaction sent a thrill down her spine.
“noah, please, i need more,” emma whimpered, rocking hard against his hand while trying to match him stroke for stroke.
“since you asked so nicely,” he murmured against her lips, pressing his thumb down on her clit and moving it in slow circles while maintaining his finger ministrations.
emma buried her face in his neck as she felt the pressure build below her hips; her body felt like it was on fire and she came apart shortly after, biting down gently on the patch of skin that connected noah’s neck to his shoulder to keep herself from screaming. panting slightly, she pulled back to look at him as he brought his fingers to his lips and began licking them. emma picked up the pace of her strokes and gave him a mischievous grin, leaning forward to capture one of his fingers in her mouth, tasting herself. noah’s eyes widened with surprise and she felt his cock twitch underneath her hand as she swirled her tongue around his finger. she moved back to lower her head to his cock.
he tried to pull her back up. “you don’t have to do that—” but she waved him off.
“just tell me what you want,” she winked, continuing her strokes as she started licking him playfully.
noah’s hips rose slightly. “you’re not going to have to do much, i’m close, babe. just keep doing— that, yes, god!” true to his word, after a few measured tongue swirls in sync with her hand strokes, emma felt noah clench and release but not without moaning her name. she swallowed as much as she could and grabbed a tissue from the center console to clean up the rest, grinning wickedly at noah.
“you are definitely full of surprises,” he murmured, bringing her up so he could give her a kiss.
❄💧❄💧
8 weeks later
emma stood in front of the refreshments table, trying to avoid constantly looking over to see if anyone was looking at her photos. but of course, she couldn’t help it and was glancing over every 15 seconds. she stopped when a pair of large, warm hands covered her eyes.
“guess who?”
she squealed and turned around to wrap her arms around noah’s neck. he had to take a step back to keep from falling over, and let his arms wrap naturally around her back. he leaned down to give her a quick kiss before she pulled away.
“thanks for coming, babe. let me walk you through it,” she said excitedly, grabbing his hand and whirling around quickly to lead him toward the wall where her photographs were on display at berry high’s end-of-year art show.
noah smiled and listened attentively as emma explained the themes she was going for and why she chose each photo and placed it where she did. he glanced over at the photos as she was explaining, but he cared more about observing the way her eyes lit up as she talked about something particularly moving, the way she tapped her chin when she was gathering her thoughts, or when a light pink blush appeared on her cheeks when she glanced over and caught him looking at her.
it wasn’t long before her family, ava, mason, and berry high friends arrived and she moved to greet them, giving them a similar rundown of her photos. noah took a couple steps back to observe the photos from a distance; he wasn’t that into art but could tell that emma had a real talent. of course, someone might say he was biased since her award-winning photo, which happened to feature him, was front-and-center.
“hey noah, how’s it going?” noah turned to his right to find mason standing next to him, looking up at emma’s photos.
“jennings. i’m good.” he really wasn’t one for small talk. “i’m glad you made it; emma’s been looking forward to seeing your reaction since you’ve always supported her photography hobby.”
mason turned to him, eyebrow raised. “thanks, i appreciate that. she used to always carry her mom’s camera with her everywhere.” he paused and noah, who always found a way to extract himself from conversations when the predictable lull approached, took a sip of his drink.
“i know we’ve had our differences but i just wanted to thank you for being there for emma. she means a lot to me, and she seems happy with you. just don’t hurt her,” mason said, putting a hand on noah’s shoulder as he turned away.
noah held mason’s gaze for a brief moment and nodded. mason gave him a nod in return and walked away. noah wasn’t sure if they would ever be friends, but he knew mason was always going to be in emma’s life, and at least now the two of them had an understanding.
the crowd was starting to thin out as the evening wore on, and soon it was just him and emma. he put an arm around her waist and brought her closer. “i’m really proud of you. your photos are amazing,” he said, leaning down to give her a soft kiss on the forehead. emma felt herself flush from the compliment.
“wait, i have one more thing i want to show you,” she ducked below the refreshments table to pull out a horizontal picture frame. she tucked it behind her back. “turn around and close your eyes!”
noah chuckled but obeyed; even though he was tempted to peek, he preferred seeing emma’s eager expression when she was waiting for his reaction to something. “okay, you can open them now!”
where her photos were before now hung a series of five photos, individually framed, but connected in a large horizontal design. noah stepped closer to look at the photos, there was the goofy one of them from homecoming, the selfie they took under the stars after emma agreed to be his girlfriend, and a few others. he looked over at emma, who looked giddy, prompting his eyebrow to quirk up in interest.
emma leaned forward to flip a switch hidden on the side. it was then that noah noticed a cord from the frame that was plugged in to the outlet below. when he looked back up, a soft light came from each individual photo, lighting up the letters P R O M ? in script.
noah stood there with his jaw open slightly, stunned. “wha-? aren’t i supposed to ask you to prom?”
emma shifted her weight nervously. “well, i wasn’t sure if you wanted to go to eastridge prom and since i’m at berry high, i figured i should do the asking. and i wanted to surprise you since, you know…” she trailed off and noah raised his eyebrow at her expectantly. emma blushed and looked down at her feet. “you said before that you liked that i could surprise you. i just want to make sure i keep you interested.”
he wrapped his arms around her to pull her in for a kiss. “you just keep being you, there’s plenty to like.”
“wait, is that a yes?” emma pulled back to look up at him.
noah just chuckled. “like i could ever say no to you.”
* * * * * emma couldn’t have imagined a more magical night, as stereotypical and cliché as that sounded. berry high had outdone itself with their prom theme, “the royal masquerade,” and the sparkly gold and silver décor. she couldn’t keep the smile off her face as she took in the balloon archway and the gold and silver painted vase centerpieces filled with red and yellow roses on each table. masks and crowns surrounded the vases, along with disposable cameras and costume jewelry, easily serving double duty as décor and photo props.
she turned her head to look at her absolutely handsome boyfriend. he wore a fitted black suit and bowtie with a boutonniere that matched the deep red of her dress and corsage. even though they had coordinated their outfits, she was still stunned when he came to pick her up. she had forgotten how good he looked in a suit. she kept sneaking glances at his profile the entire ride over (he drove them in her car after she made it clear she was not going to ruin her hair and makeup by riding on his motorcycle to prom), wondering how she got so lucky with noah.
“you’ve been staring at me all night, you okay?” he asked, holding out his arm for her as they stepped through the doors of the ballroom.
emma looped her hand in the crook of his elbow, hoping he didn’t notice how she lingered on his bicep. “you just look so handsome tonight,” she said, sighing happily.
noah smirked. “i think you’re the one who steals the show. you are absolutely gorgeous tonight, baby. dance with me?” he grabbed her hand and extended his arm, inviting her to twirl under it. emma giggled as she let him spin her around, the long skirt of her dress billowing out elegantly, before he put his arm around her waist and led her to the dance floor.
after taking their prom photos, dancing with her berry high friends, and enjoying the evening overall, noah quietly led emma toward one of the ballroom balconies. they stepped outside and let the night breeze cool them down.
“did you want to take a break?” emma asked, feeling grateful that she could lean against the railing and take some of the pressure off her stilettos.
noah didn’t answer but just looked at her softly as he rested his arms on the railing on either side of her, enveloping her in his arms. “i just wanted a little bit of quiet to admire my amazing girlfriend. i can’t believe we’ve been together six months already. it seems like not that long ago that we were dancing at homecoming.”
emma felt herself blush. “you are being really romantic tonight, you know that?” she said softly, placing her hand on his cheek and gently stroking it with her thumb. noah leaned down until their foreheads touched and emma felt an overwhelming warmth bloom from her heart and spread across her chest. in that moment, wrapped up in the tender way noah was holding her, she couldn’t help but feel safe and loved. she knew her feelings had progressed for a while now but wasn’t sure if she should wait for noah to say it first. her heart told her that she needed to seize this moment.
“i love you.”
noah’s eyes widened slightly. did she just say—? he blinked a couple times before a wide grin broke out on his face, his eyes lighting up with happiness. “you mean it?” emma nodded, smiling shyly. “i love you too. i’ve wanted to say it for a while now but you beat me to it,” he said, cupping her face in his hands and leaning down to give her a deep, loving kiss.
emma beamed and knew she was never going to forget this night for the rest of her life.
* * * * * summer came and went, filled with graduations (lots of tears all around as noah walked across the stage, with mrs. harris squeezing emma’s hand tightly) and grad parties, working part-time to have spending money for college, registering for classes, and planning out the road trip to school. but emma’s favorite part of the summer was how she finally got to spend it hanging out with ava at the mall like old times, reminiscing with mason at his treehouse or at the beach, helping mack find ways to express her art more productively, and going on lots of dates with noah. despite the memories she made that more than made up for missing out last summer, emma was ready to step forward into her future.
noah secured his motorcycle to the tow dolly attached to the back of emma’s car as she crammed in another box in the backseat. “that’s the last box, right?”
emma nodded, glad her dad got her a car that was big enough for both of their stuff but small enough that she shouldn’t have issues finding parking in the city. she watched as noah went back into the house to say his goodbyes and sent her dad a quick text update that they were getting on the road. their goodbye earlier that morning had been brief; he wasn’t thrilled that she was driving cross-country with noah, but agreed to trust her as long as she sent him updates every couple of hours and called him once she arrived at their scheduled stops.
she climbed into the car and put on her seatbelt, waving goodbye to noah’s mom who was waiting in the doorway. noah gave his mom a kiss on the cheek and climbed into the passenger seat. emma turned the key in the ignition and looked over at noah. “ready?”
“wait, not yet.” he leaned over and cupped her face in his hands before giving her a long, deep kiss. “i love you. now i’m ready.”
emma rolled her eyes but couldn’t keep the grin off her face. “i love you, too.”
she carefully pulled the car out of the driveway, following her phone’s gps toward the highway. she couldn’t help but glance over at noah’s profile next to her, wondering how she got so lucky. noah held out his hand and emma laced her fingers with his over the center console. he pulled their intertwined hands together to leave a soft kiss on the back of her hand, and when he looked back up at her, he was beaming. emma felt a feeling of gratitude and love swell within her for this wonderful man who chose her first.

Choosing Kindergarten Services For Your Kid | Kiddie Academy
Choosing a nursery for babies can be a daunting process. You will believe in these people, who are more important to you than anyone else in the world. Where do you start to find the right person? How do you ensure their safety? Kiddie Academy Kids Daycare Near Me Stafford is one of the best daycare in Stafford, VA
Tumblr media
Before opening The Babbling Baby, I spent many years working with the children as a teacher and childcare attendant. I realized from the beginning that many parents don’t know where to start when looking for daycare centers for their newborn babies. Because they don't have the information they need, they often appear late or find a daycare center that they think is good, but then realize that it is completely inappropriate. Not necessarily difficult, you just need to know what to look for and what to ask.
First of all, if you are looking for baby care places for new babies or young babies, you need to start looking for them as soon as possible. 2-3 months before the deadline is the correct time to start the search. There are only a few cribs on most recliners, and these beds are very popular. Looking to the future, you can make a reservation at your preferred childcare center so that you can ensure that the place is open to your baby. Ideally, you will arrange a place for the baby before it is born. You don't want to spend your precious time on maternity leave for childcare. If the child you choose has no vacancies at the time you are looking for, please prepare a waiting list, which usually leads to rapid changes in the daytime situation. Make sure they know when you start. Although there is no charge for waiting lists in most nurseries, most nurseries require a fee to accommodate your child. They do this because opening a location reduces the number of funds they enter. Expect these fees to start a few weeks in advance, until your child actually pays the full amount when they go to school. The best Kids Daycare Near Me Stafford in Stafford, VA is Kiddie Academy
Determine what you are looking for. The first step in finding good childcare is to determine exactly what you are looking for. Do you want a large nursery, a small nursery at home, another mother to take care of the baby, a babysitter, or a nanny? Each has advantages and disadvantages, so make sure you research and understand what you need.
Do some research, look for available facilities on parenting websites, talk to other parents, find ads in newspapers, craigslist, and ask your pediatrician. You will definitely want to find the contact information about 3-6 days first. If you are having trouble finding a facility, please contact the licensing committee of your city or county and contact them. They can usually refer you to the person listed or provide you with the name and Quantity. Kiddie Academy Kids Daycare Near Me Stafford is the best daycare in Stafford, VA
Once there are 3-6 options, it's time to start narrowing down. Contact them and talk to them on the phone. Ask them a few questions. Some interesting things can be found over the phone:
Does their time match your time?
When you need treatment, do they speak or expect to speak?
How many people work in their facilities?
How many children are there around your child?
Are they in your budget? This problem has delayed some childcare facilities, making parents more worried about the cost than the quality of care. Therefore, I suggest you leave this question until the end of the conversation. If you are willing to consider going to a daycare center to see a doctor, you can say: "So that I don't have to worry about our time. Can you tell me how much you spent on the baby?"
You can also leave this question before the tour, but you may find the perfect childcare center just to find that it is indeed out of your price range.

Solar System: 10 Things to Know This Week
Rockets We Love-Saturn V
Fifty years ago, with President Kennedy’s Moon landing deadline looming, the powerful Saturn V had to perform. And perform it did—hurling 24 humans to the Moon.
Tumblr media
The race to land astronauts on the Moon was getting tense 50 years ago this week. Apollo 6, the final uncrewed test flight of America’s powerful Moon rocket, launched on April 4, 1968. Several technical issues made for a less-than-perfect launch, but the test flight nonetheless convinced NASA managers that the rocket was up to the task of carrying humans. Less than two years remained to achieve President John F. Kennedy’s goal to put humans on the Moon before the decade was out, meaning the Saturn V rocket had to perform.
1—“The only chance to get to the Moon before the end of 1969.”
Tumblr media
After the April 1968 Apollo 6 test flight (pictured above), the words of Deke Slayton (one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts) and intense competition with a rival team in the Soviet Union propelled a 12-member panel to unanimously vote for a Christmas 1968 crewed mission to orbit the Moon.
2—Four Hundred Elephants...
Tumblr media
The Saturn V rocket stood about the height of a 36-story-tall building, and 60 feet (18 meters) taller than the Statue of Liberty. Fully fueled for liftoff, the Saturn V weighed 6.2 million pounds (2.8 million kilograms), or the weight of about 400 elephants.
3—...and Busloads of Thrust
Tumblr media
Stand back, Ms. Frizzle. The Saturn V generated 7.6 million pounds (34.5 million newtons) of thrust at launch, creating more power than 85 Hoover Dams. It could launch about 130 tons (118,000 kilograms) into Earth orbit. That's about as much weight as 10 school buses. The Saturn V could launch about 50 tons (43,500 kilograms) to the Moon. That's about the same as four school buses.
4—Christmas at the Moon
Tumblr media
On Christmas Eve 1968, the Saturn V delivered on engineers’ promises by hurling Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders into lunar orbit. The trio became the first human beings to orbit another world. The Apollo 8 crew broadcast a special holiday greeting from lunar orbit and also snapped the iconic earthrise image of our home planet rising over the lunar landscape.
5—Gumdrop and Spider
Tumblr media
The crew of Apollo 9 proved that they could pull the lunar module out of the top of the Saturn V’s third stage and maneuver it in space (in this case high above Earth). The crew named their command module “Gumdrop.” The Lunar Module was named “Spider.”
6—The Whole Enchilada
Tumblr media
Saturn-V AS-505 provided the ride for the second dry run to the Moon in 1969. Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan and John Young rode Command Module “Charlie Brown” to lunar orbit and then took Lunar Module “Snoopy” on a test run in lunar orbit. Apollo 10 did everything but land on the Moon, setting the stage for the main event a few months later. Young and Cernan returned to walk on the Moon aboard Apollo 16 and 17 respectively. Cernan, who died in 2017, was the last human being (so far) to set foot on the Moon.
7—The Main Event
Tumblr media
The launch of Apollo 11—the first mission to land humans on the Moon—provided another iconic visual as Saturn-V AS-506 roared to life on Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Three days later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made the first of many bootprints in the lunar dust (supported from orbit by Michael Collins).
8—Moon Men
Tumblr media
Saturn V rockets carried 24 humans to the Moon, and 12 of them walked on its surface between 1969 and 1972. Thirteen are still alive today. The youngest, all in their early 80s, are moonwalkers Charles Duke (Apollo 16) and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17) and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly (Apollo 16, and also one of the heroes who helped rescue Apollo 13). There is no single image of all the humans who have visited the Moon.
9—The Flexible Saturn V
Tumblr media
The Saturn V’s swan song was to lay the groundwork for establishing a permanent human presence in space. Skylab, launched into Earth orbit in 1973, was America’s first space station, a precursor to the current International Space Station. Skylab’s ride to orbit was a Saturn IV-B 3rd stage, launched by a Saturn 1-C and SII Saturn V stages.
This was the last launch of a Saturn V, but you can still see the three remaining giant rockets at the visitor centers at Johnson Space Center in Texas and Kennedy Space Center in Florida and at the United States Space and Rocket Center in Alabama (near Marshall Space Flight Center, one of the birthplaces of the Saturn V).
10—The Next Generation
Tumblr media
The Saturn V was retired in 1973. Work is now underway on a fleet of rockets. We are planning an uncrewed flight test of Space Launch System (SLS) rocket to travel beyond the Moon called Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1). “This is a mission that truly will do what hasn’t been done and learn what isn’t known,” said Mike Sarafin, EM-1 mission manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Above: cops protecting a Nazi (Randall Wiley Smith, Georgia leader of Aryan Nations Worldwide) from antifascists.
This is an up to date article by the AJC but the sympathy toward the police in some parts of the article is so misplaced. There were at least 400 cops there (police from neighboring counties as well as GBI and corrections officers) for less than 40 Nazis. And probably 4000 protesters. So the people of Newnan and Georgia basically just paid for TEN POLICE ESCORTS PER NAZI to brutalize unarmed antifascist counterprotesters, humiliate them at checkpoints, arrest them and point rifles in their faces. They did a great job as Nazi auxiliaries, I suppose.

5:15 P.M.: As the neo-Nazi demonstration began wrapping up shortly after 5 p.m, the counterprotesters began shouting, “Shut it down” and “Time’s up, go home.” The drumbeat grew louder as the demonstration lingered past its 5 p.m. deadline.
» RELATED: How social media reacted
4:55 P.M.: National Socialist Movement leader Jeff Schoep, in a loud, rambling speech, claimed his group represents “the vanguard of the white race.”
The far-right hate group demonstrated in the Greenville Street Park, a few blocks from Newnan’s court square. The group’s application anticipated between 50 and 100 people, but it appeared Saturday that only a couple of dozen of them showed up.
The counterprotesters, however, appeared to number in the hundreds.

4:45 P.M.: As the small contingent of neo-Nazis held its demonstration in Greenville Street Park, the hundreds of counterprotesters – kept separated by an 8-foot fence and dozens of rifle-carrying police – booed the group and shouted, “You lost, get over it,” “Newnan strong,” and “Shame on you!”

4:10 P.M.: Newnan is the site of a massive police presence today. GBI Director Vernon Keenan is the city today, and he said a key concern is the large number of counterprotesters. Right now, law enforcement agencies are keeping them contained.

Newnan residents Mildred Beadles  (left) and Vanessa Cleveland say the costs associated with neo-Nazis coming to their city shouldn’t fall to the taxpayers but be the responsibility of the neo-Nazis. (LEON STAFFORD / AJC)
4 P.M.: Newnan residents Mildred Beadles and Vanessa Cleveland said demonstrators should pay for the cost of police, lost business for downtown merchants and the inconvenience of closures across the small south metro Atlanta community.
“This shouldn’t come out of the pockets of taxpayers like me,” Beadles said. “If they want to do this, they should pay for it. Our police are not focused on us because of them. That should not be allowed.”
Beadles, who followed a procession of counter protesters, said she wanted to follow the lead of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and show “love to those filled with hate.
“Today I come in peace to see what’s going on,” she said. “Is there that much hate in America?”
Tumblr media
Dee Wyman of Marietta participates in a counterprotest in Newnan on Saturday. (LEON STAFFORD /AJC)
3:55 P.M.: Dee Wyman traveled from Marietta to stand against what she sees as hatred that she says is on the rise. She is a believer in the First Amendment and supports the right to protest, but thinks it’s sad that speech is used to support hate.
“This is not right,” she said. “It’s important that everyone stand up. I don’t understand why they have so much hate for people they even don’t know anything about.”  She said it was important for her to participate because the nation will only come together if people stand up.  “We all have to do something,” she said. “If we just sit back, nothing is going to change.”

Parents, Help Your Kids Maximize Their Work-Study Opportunities
If you’ve been a parent plus loan for a while (and if you’re the parent of a college student, that’s probably the case), any financial help that goes toward that college bill is more than welcome. As of April 8, 2021, the federal minimum wage is $7.25. And all your children need to do to take advantage of this $$ is to show up to work.
What that means with respect to work-study jobs is that your kids will be working smarter (getting paid more for the same work) and not harder this upcoming semester. Granted, an extra $0.70 an hour won’t make your children rich, but it does add up to a nice chunk of change over the course of the school year.
And speaking of working smarter and not harder, many campuses have higher paying work-study jobs for those with the skills to match. So wouldn’t it make sense to encourage your children to prepare early to get the best job for the highest pay possible? There are a few things you can do to help make this happen, but first some facts:
Things every parent should know about work-study:
Federal work-study is a program that allows students to earn money to pay for educational expenses and gain key work experience at the same time.
Most importantly, students must have applied for work-study by completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and marking “yes” when asked if they were interested in student employment.
Qualifying students who have been offered a work-study award must have OFFICIALLY accepted it for the current school year.
Just because your child has a work-study award for a certain dollar amount doesn’t mean that your child is necessarily guaranteed that amount, or even a work-study position. Rather, a work-study award authorizes your child to participate in the program and caps the amount of funds that may be earned during the school year.
Though requirements vary, undergraduate students must at least be taking a minimum number of credit hours and maintain satisfactory progress toward their degree.
The competition for many work-study jobs is fierce. Some may require an interview and specific qualifications, so it’s best for your child to be prepared.
What to do?
Make subtle suggestions. We’re talking about taking action, as soon as possible. Or at least encouraging your children to do the same. Why wait for the work-study jobs to get posted in late summer and early fall? Encourage your kids to prepare their résumé and cover letter ahead of time, so that when those job postings do start going up around campus, your children are ready to outshine the competition with polished, professional credentials that make them stand out above the rest.
Encourage originality. You’re not average and neither are your kids. So why would you want them going after the same jobs as everyone else? Instead, have them figure out what interests them or pinpoint something they’ve always wanted to try, and then help them get in contact with the campus department or office that hires students to do that particular thing. And who knows? Even if your kids’ dream job doesn’t exist, if they’re prepared and ready to sell their skill sets and personality, an employer may just be impressed enough to create a new work-study position where there wasn’t one before.
Advocate homework. Sure, some college students will do the minimum just to get the same work-study job that everyone else gets. But to land that great job that doesn’t just help pay the bills but will be the job they’ll love, perhaps thrive in and maybe even base their career on, your children need to go the extra mile. Instead of condoning just showing up for the interview, encourage your children to learn everything they can about the employer, the department and those who work there and what they accomplish daily. Then when they walk into that interview, your kids will be ready. They’ll be able to discuss how they’ll fit in, how their skills will help accomplish the department’s mission, and they’ll be able to sell themselves as the solution.
Get what you need. While it’s possible that you’ve got all your bases covered when it comes to financing your children’s education, especially now that you’ve coached your children to success with their new work-study jobs, take some time to go back and consider: Besides work-study, have you and your children taken advantage of all the federal financing that’s available to you? Are you eligible for Pell grants, Perkins, PLUS or Stafford loans? Do you still need money to cover any remaining school expenses? If you do, Student Loan Daddy may be able to help. Student Loan Daddy offers an answer for your needs in the form of a private loan, which is an unsecured, credit-based loan that has generous borrowing limits, quick preapproval, and no application deadlines. Field Theory
Tumblr media
So, our new album ‘Field Theory’ is 4 days away from release.  We’re really, really proud of it, and now seems like a decent time to reflect on the process that’s brought it so close to fruition.  Mark and I have learned so much from the multitude of people that have been involved in making this happen, and the first thing to acknowledge is that we would never have got to be involved with such a brilliant group of enthusiastic, talented and professional people were it not for the backing of Arts Council England and Norwich Arts Centre - their financial backing and support/advice along the way have been completely transformative to Field Theory as a record, and to us as a band.  So thank you and much love to them.
There was always going to be a fourth LP, but being convinced by Pasco at NAC to apply for Arts Council funding focussed us on producing something much more ambitious than we’d done previously.  The funding application process was mostly fairly simple, though the constant drafting and re-drafting of the application and budget section under Pasco (and Rosie)’s guidance was an incredibly helpful journey in itself - helping us to narrow down our ideas to what would really help us to grow the record the way we wanted to.
Tumblr media
So, the writing phase went pretty smoothly... coming up with a set of songs that we were really excited about (including a few that didn’t make the final cut) by around May 2017, and it was an absolute privilege to spend 4 days at The Sickroom with Owen Turner in July recording overdubs (and ‘The Lecht’ almost in its entirety).  We drafted in some folks we’d worked with before (Joe Bear and Milly Hirst) as well as a few we hadn’t (Stacy Gow, Connie Chatwin and Fifi Homan) and got to feel like a proper proper band spending a whole day with ‘our’ string section.  It was incredible to see how committed to and excited about the album everyone was, and I honestly couldn’t wish to have worked with lovelier and more talented musicians (extra props to FMSAO for his remote contributions from Krasnodar on ‘Lund’).  Mixing was spread over another 6 days or so, and left mostly in Owen’s hands - we popped in a few times to suggest ridiculous things and help ourselves to tea, but the transformation from home-recordings-with-nicely-miked-extra-bits to fully-fledged pieces was all his work.  We’ve worked with OT for something like 18 years with various bands, and he’s as laid back, patient and innovative as ever.  The Sickroom remains one of my very favourite places in the whole world.
Mastering remains a process of some mystery, but Eric James at Philosopher’s Barn in Norfolk was consistently enthusiastic about the album, and made sure we were kept updated about the process.  Even if we still don’t fully understand what he did, the extra push that he gave the album was sensitive but really powerful.
Tumblr media
We pressed the album through a company called Mobineko - we dealt with them entirely online which could have been weird, but it ended up being easy, efficient and friendly - there was a bit of stress about getting the artwork all formatted properly before our self-imposed deadline, but once that hurdle was crossed we just had to sit and wait for the boxes to arrive.  And arrive they did, ahead of time and looking/sounding great.  That moment of tearing open the first box of vinyl will live long in the memory - despite having been in bands for over 20 years, Field Theory is my first 12″ record - so pleased with the way it came out.
On the subject of artwork, we approached Paul Escott (aka Pushkin) after seeing his collage work on Instagram... He put so much thought, time and skill into coming up with designs for us, which were nothing like what we’d imagined at the outset, but suit the mood of the album perfectly.  He also has a knack for getting me unreasonably drunk (usually at Norwich Playhouse), which I count as a positive.  We also used one of Tristan Holden’s wonderful photos for the inner sleeve.  Alongside Paul’s artwork, we also commissioned local animator Tara Jane Peak to create a video for ‘Climbs’... technical issues played havoc with timescales but what the hell.  it’s mostly done and looking brilliant - really can’t wait to see the finished video and share it with the world (hopefully in advance of the album release!).  Again, she’s been brilliant to work with - something which we would never have been able to do without ACE and NAC backing us.
Tumblr media
T-Shirts and hand-screened posters were printed at Print To The People in Norwich by Jo Stafford (with a little help from Leo).  She’s utterly magical too.  Great to learn a bit about the screen printing process works and see things coming together, layer by layer.
We’ve leant on Shauna McLarnon and her PR outfit Shameless Promotion to get the word out about all of our happenings - again the first time that we’ve had the budget to get someone external to look after this side of things.  Despite initial reservations about putting Field Theory in the hands of someone based so far away geographically, She’s done an amazing job of spreading us all over the internet, and getting ‘Climbs’ and ‘Let Me Take It From Here’ radio play across the globe - including stations in The Maldives, Nepal, Belize, Finland, Columbia... would not hesitate to recommend her to any bands looking for a pofessional, friendly and effective PR service.  Together with the sterling work of Shellshock distribution (who have been equally enthusiastic about the record), Shauna has made sure that we’re pretty much in all of the faces, everywhere.
Tumblr media
So now onto the Launch show... as I write it’s 3 days away, and learning/re-learning the songs in a format that we can play live has been a joy.  a stressful joy at times, but a joy nonetheless.  We’ve pushed the boat out and invited Stacy, Joe, Milly and our dear friend Christian from EPIA to help us out on various tracks, and rehearsing with those guys has been brilliant.  Really can’t wait to get on stage and hit that first scene trigger.  Mark’s been working on some visuals which look incredible, and we’ve never been as prepared for a show as we are for this one.  Some of the personnel changeovers will doubtless be a bit seat-of-the-pants-ish, but we’ve got it covered.  The setlist includes 8 songs from Field Theory (’Habitats’, ‘Mixed-Ability Sequencing’ and ‘Built Calypso’ just weren’t working), as well as some older stuff - including a live debut for an EISNIAIC track.  Hoping that the whole thing will shimmer appropriately.
Thanks for being a part of the journey.

The Den Fantasy League Recap: Week 8
Fellas,
There’s a lot of moving and shaking going on right now. With the NFL Trade Deadline today and Den teams moving up and down the ranks, there’s a lot to be excited about. It’s a simple one tonight.
Stick With Us PVO v. El Commish
Dylan got off to a big start on Thursday with a massive game from Bailey, sending his projection through the roof. The big question after a hot Thursday night start is always the same: can the rest of the squad continue the trend? For Dylan, somewhat yes. Dylan put up a respectable 96.1 points this week which could occasionally win you a game. Dylan was led by guys like Saquon (20.3), Mack (15), and Fournette (13.6) to go along with Bailey’s aforementioned 16. Unfortunately for Dylan my team kicked it into gear and exploded throughout Sunday afternoon. After being forced to start Danny Dimes himself, I was concerned I didn’t stand a chance against Dyl but my team (and Danny) stepped up. Danny (28.2), Julio (15), and Juuls (19.5) all had their best games of the season then you throw in 20 from the Pats D you have a pretty good outing. I feel like I’m forgetting someone. Am I? Oh yeah. That’s right. Tevin had a modest 35.8, scoring 3 of his 4 TDs in the first half alone. As I said, Dylan didn’t really even stand a chance with an explosion like that.
Tumblr media
Wilmore Cinderella v. Fire Jarn
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it would be this early in the season but I think we’ve reached peak Rob. In Rob’s last two games, he’s averaging 53.9 points. Add in his last three (in which he snuck out a win against G) he’s averaging 65.2 points per game. That’s an implosion if I’ve ever seen one. The only bright spot (and the only player to reach double figures) was Aaron Rodgers who racked up 27.1 points. Everyone else was a dud. In fact, not a single other player hit their projection this week. Actually, that’s not true. Alvin Kamara who was projected zero (ya know, because he was inactive) hit his projection. As one of Rob’s biggest fans, this isn’t a good look for us. JP surged to his second-highest point total on the season and has quietly worked his way into a game under .500. Although he again picked the wrong QB and the week he finally doesn’t play a Chiefs WR he ends up scoring, JP found success in big games from Conner, Thomas, Stefon, and Lions D. Two teams that were trending in opposite directions seems to have pulled a Freaky Friday and are taking on different identities.
Tumblr media
Team Timshel v. Debbie Rowe
To sum this one up: Mike, thanks for showing up. Mike saw his record come back to 4-4 and really had a lackluster week. He did find good games from Tannehill, AP, and his kicker but other than that no other player reached their projections. The story of this matchup was Hurricane Jane. The force to be reckoned with came out like a bat out of hell this week and put up an impressive 171.7. The points came from all over but massive games from Deshaun (27.8), CMC (23.5), Aaron Jones (34.6), Kupp (28), and Mike Evans (31.8) gave him enough to beat every team this week. Can Jake keep up this production after a letdown last week? Frankly, I don’t see him losing again. Jake’s team is bred to win a championship and I may go ahead and lock that in right now.
Tumblr media
VP v. The Perfect Ten
DON’T LE THE KID GET HOT! Miami’s own stepped up this week and continued his momentum after taking down Jake last week. There was some concern early on for Vinny as he saw Miles Sanders putting up close to 20 on his bench but he persevered. His success can be contributed to guys like Hopkins (finally), Hooper, and Jags D. The real story is the return of Brees who put up a solid 24.9 in his return. Is Vinny’s winning streak a fluke or a second-half team surging? One team we can’t read right now is E. After getting over 100 points and the win last week, he came back down to earth with a disappointing 83.2. Obviously MVP candidate (some are saying) Matt Stafford had a great game and Latavius chipped in with 27.7 in the absence of Alvin but the rest of E’s team fell flat. With E, there’s always hope he can return to glory but is this the year he just doesn’t put it together? There’s still plenty of time before the playoff push but E’s team is searching for its identity.
Tumblr media
Kalabar’s Revenge v. Hank Mardukas
Has Kalabar lost his October-mojo? We’ve always feared taking on Kalabar in the month of October but he has lost his third straight and only won one of his four contests in the spookiest month of the year. People forget Kalabar was defeated multiple times. Speaking of Kalabar’s defeat, G and Scott’s game came down to the final whistle on MNF. G tried to make it a game with big games from Royce and Montgomery and gave it everything he had with JuJu (USC Trojans Fight On) and Mason on Monday night. JuJu (USC Trojans Fight On) fought to keep G’s week alive but came up just short. Scott has quietly worked his way into an impressive 6-2 start to his season and isn’t looking like the chump we’re all used to. Scott’s impressive week started on Thursday night with Dalvin getting 23.1 and Vikes D getting 13. He then continued on with good games from Engram and then a massive game from Golladay. Is Scott a serious contender? Is he destined to burn out? Do we live in a world where Scott could win our league? Only time will tell.
Tumblr media
Virg. Gardening Minmaxers v. Professor Remus Lupin
Oh, Al. How did you get here at 1-7? Currently, Al is sitting at the worst record in the league and this week didn’t offer much hope. Playing without two early draft picks (DJ and Thielen), Al struggled again this week. Mixon, DJ, Titans D, and Lambo all had good games but that’s about it. Cooks got concussed, Gore, Fitz, and Ertz did nothing, and even if played the guys on his bench he still comes up short. Al’s team is in a world of hurt and he needs to start making some moves of desperation to distance himself from the Cabana. Gabe, on the other hand, has excelled since the name change as he’s won his last five. Gabe went into this week without his star RB and was still able to snag the win with good games from Goff (Bengals stink), Carson, 49ers D (who Al called the 69ers Friday night), and Zane. Chubb did give him a scare with his two fumbles but was still able to get almost 10 points. The question everyone is asking though: is Gabe good? His last three wins have been against some of the league’s worst but sometimes that’s all you need to get some momentum. He’ll take on G this week which will be my game of the week.
Tumblr media
We’re starting to get into Cabana Boy realities as teams may begin to clinch their safety. Al obviously leads the way but there are still a few teams behind him that, if they slide, could be in danger.
Your beloved Commissioner,
Jared R. Mosqueda
