The silence. It was intense. The heartbeats could be heard out of the chest. The chaos in the village was parroting around as a reminder of the terrors that suffocated them just enough to make them suffer and kill them slowly, making them feel every single pain possible. To make sure that they felt it in all two hundred and six bones.
Was living even worth it in this world? In the end, everyone is supposed to die anyway. And being a slave and knowing there is no out, was it worth a try to live?
For so long, all the commoners, with little humanity left, lived with the hope to see a pretty sunrise and pink and purple sunsets. But all they got was grey-blue mornings and the darkest of the nights. Was there any day that the sun shone warmth? No. There wasn't. Just like King's heart, the sun was cold too.
The hatred in everyone's eyes was screaming red and bloody murder. Just one touch and your head could be gone flying in the air, away from your body.
No one was allowed to breathe without permission. Whoever was alive, wasn't because they kept themselves alive… It was because the King still hasn't written about their deaths.
Would it be too bad to wish for the King to write about their deaths soon? Death was easier than the torture they put everyone through every day.
Would the king be the one writing his own death? Or will someone else write it for him? Is he even supposed to die? Was he going to live forever?
What if the king died? Would the sun become warmer and bring warmth to people's cold hearts?
“Circe,” Coronis weakly started as she was sitting on the chair and her little sister was sitting on the floor by the hearth, to warm her hands. The evenings were getting even colder. “Why would you leave my side, especially when I told you not to?”
Circe's lips frowned downwards, “I saw a tiny puppy that was running away,” she said nonchalantly. “I just wanted to play with it,” her shoulders shrugged.
Coronis sighed and left for the kitchenette. She had no vitality to deal with Circe. How many times was she supposed to repeat one thing again and again? It was tiring for her.
Circe has always been the one to not listen. She always thought that whatever her sister and the rest of the family were saying was just a bunch of foolery just to keep her from going outside and keep her from the merriment outside.
Coronis was just four years old when she first witnessed a heartless, gruesome execution. That time, she didn't eat food for a week and kept vomiting out anything she put in her mouth. The reason was that the family wasn't able to produce enough material for the King's wife and son. The Assassin pulled all of them out on the gravely path and stabbed them in the face again and again. His partner started decapitating the bodies like a chicken.
The parts of the bodies were hung around the village to show the power and punishment. The young children were slaughtered and left to decay in the shack they lived in. A few nights later the shack was burnt with all the unfortunate members.
The picture of the incident was pasted in Coronis's brain.
Every detail of them was still fresh and very much alive in her. The trauma she survived. Just at the age of four, she understood that she was living in hell and had to obey to live.
From that day, she saw many heartless assassinations. She saw the path covered in pools of blood and flesh. Now a beheading was just a simple thing for her just like killing a chicken without any remorse.
When Circe was born, Coronis saw her smiling. She was still a child and seeing another human made her maternally emotional even though Circe was her sister.
That day she promised herself that no matter what, she was going to protect that raw, and genuine smile. Her younger self cried in silence and cursed at her parents for bringing another little human to life just to make her suffer this unjust too.
Every day she lived with a fear of losing her. The little bit of trust was gone and she became paranoid just for her sister.
But her heart kept hurting and breaking. Circe started growing up, wanting to go out and see the world. However, that world was not made for her. No matter how much Coronis scolded her, she would not listen and do what she wanted. She did not want her little sister to witness any assassination or straight-up lose her sister.
She did that today too. And as much as she wanted to go easy on her sister, she knew the lesson was still left. Circe's demeanour was enough to make the older realise that the younger was still not capturing the air.
Coronis took a wooden spatula and stood in front of Circe, gesturing to her to stand up. Her heart was squeezing inside her chest. Her body shook with rage and fear. Again and again and again and yet her little sister won't take her seriously. Her life flashed in front of her eyes when she saw her in the hands of the patrolman. “Bring your hands out.”
“Why do y—”
“I. Said. Bring. Your. Hands. Out, Circe!” she screamed.
Circe quickly brought her hands out and showed her. She gasped when Coronis whipped the spatula on her hand. “You make me want to kill myself, Circe!” she kept on hitting her hands. “Why do you not listen to me?!” Coronis's voice started to go higher. It was the first time she ever hit her. “Why the fuck do you have to be so nonchalant?! Are you so dumb?”
Coronis had lost her mind. She let out her inner fears and acted however she wanted. As much as her heart was aching, the pleasure was lessening the burden she carries.
Circe screamed and tried to pull her hands away but her older sister held them tightly and kept whipping them. “It hurt!”
“Shut up!” she threw the spatula away and held her by her hair. “Shut up! Why do you want to die so badly? Tell me, I'll kill you, happily! You do realize that you were going to die!” Coronis slapped her across the face once… Twice… Thrice… again and again. “When will you realize that the world is not for you? You do not belong outside of this shack! If not those men from the castle, the people here will kill you. They will fucking fuck you and leave you to die. No one is forgiving Circe, no one!”
Circe tried to save herself from her sister. At that moment, she felt like she lost her older sister. A fear sat deep inside her. She regretted not listening to her sister, brother, and parents. Even though she knew they wanted the best, she let her heart overpower her actions.
“I won't do it again!” the girl cried. “I will never go out or see outside without your permission, Coronis! Please, let me go!”
“Shut up! Shut up! Please, Circe, for the love of God, shut up! Do not make hollow promises!” Coronis's eyes were swollen from crying. “Please, stop hurting me, Circe. You do not have any idea of how much your actions hurt me. Who am I supposed to cry out to? I feel suffocated and you just close my nose with your non-seriousness. Is it that easy for you to pretend to be scared?” her hands fell on her sides. “Just… Just don't show me your face, okay? Stay here but do not come in the slot, I beg you.”
The light in the sky was gone. The slot was cold and dark, just how Coronis felt. Her hands were burning from hitting the little girl. Her eyes were dried. But her mind was empty of thoughts. There was not a spec of thought that she thought of.
The emptiness was needed for her to think straight. What worse could have happened today? Circe could have been beheaded. Was Coronis supposed to bring her head home? Was she allowed to mourn? Wasn't she already mourning in her own way… at her own pace?
The little light was flickering from the outside. She looked out and saw a pair of eyes looking straight into hers. They weren't hard to recognize from far away. She knew them by heart now.
This time, there was no fear in her heart, just emptiness. She looked into those eyes, thinking that if it wasn't for him, she would have been gone. Two hundred sixty-eight would have been her number.
As much as Coronis was thankful, she still didn't forgive him. What he did was utterly disgusting to her. That too, rightfully. But, was her forgiveness even mattered? Not at all. He was someone who held power over her. She wasn't to forgive him, he was to forgive her even though she had done nothing wrong. But isn't that the whole point? Wrong is always right.
Coronis touched the locket she had. It made her horrified, chills ran down her spine. Her heartbeat picked up the pace, pulling her out of her daze and realising what was happening.
She turned around and tried to calm herself. The door opened, making her flinch. In the dark room, her mother stepped in with a candle and a bowl. “Coronis?”
Coronis sighed and faced away from her mother. “Please, leave.”
Martha chuckled and sat beside her. She was a motherly mother. Whenever she was around, Coronis felt at peace. In the chaos, only she was the calm afternoon in summer.
“You know when Circe was born, I knew I did not need to be concerned about her as much. You were already there, taking care of her more than I ever could. It always felt like she was your daughter. You taught her how to speak, walk, read and so much more. You took care of her like a guardian angel. I have never seen you so protective over anything or anyone ever. It was as if you forgot about the whole world and yourself just to protect Circe from those demons who lurked around and hunted down people,” said Martha as she lit the lantern in the slot. The bowl of soup was in front of Coronis. “When Circe started to grow older, she became ignorant and brought troubles endless times. You know what I'm worried about?” Coronis shook her head. “I'm more worried about you than Circe.”
At her mother's words, she looked at her, speechless. Why would she even be worried about her when her younger daughter has always been laid with danger?
But Martha continued. “Because… I don't want to lose my older daughter to her silly ignorance. I feel how you feel. And I know if something happens to her, I will lose you,” she looked at her daughter with soaked eyes and smiled sadly. “I know this was not the right answer… But sometimes what is wrong is what we need to do just to make things right,” with that said, she got up and walked towards the door with her candle. “Eat something, you need it.”
Coronis was left alone with her thoughts. The orange of the lantern reflected on her features, making her look like a night goddess with a screwed-up mind.
It was early in the morning. Everyone was busy with their work. Draco had gone with the cattle to the meadows. Martha took Circe out so that Coronis could have the house to herself and work without worrying about anything.
Coronis had bought the yeast yesterday and was in the pocket of her gown. But the dry fruits from Nori's shop were left behind. She was too anxious about her sister to worry about those dry fruits. She was ordered to bake a dry fruit cake for the King. But later she remembered that she had forgotten them there. And now she was left with only ingredients for the bread. She made a mental note to stop by Nori's shop.
Coronis had removed the locket when she went to take a bath and had hidden it in her stack of clothes. Her mind felt lighter the moment she removed it. It felt like she could breathe properly.
She felt like it brought bad luck to her. Her heart felt heavier thinking about it. The swollen face of crying Circe was rolling in front of her eyes. It was her fault that Circe left her in the first place. Only if she could have held her hand and kept an eye on her instead of losing herself in her thoughts.
Never in her eighteen years had she thought about beating Circe. She felt like she had gone crazy. The way her hands itched to hurt Circe was haunting her even when she was asleep. She had woken up earlier than before, soaking in her sweat and out of breath.
A knock on the door pulled her out of her breaking mind. She looked out of the window and saw Nori standing, looking back at her with a tiny smile.
Coronis quickly left the kitchenette and opened the door, inviting the sweet girl inside. Offering her some water, she sat beside her. “What are you doing here, Nori?”
Nori smiled, “Yesterday, you left your stuff at my shop. I thought I must give back.” She placed a cotton bag on the table. Coronis looked at her and slowly opened the bag to see the contents inside. The dry fruits.
“Nori, you didn't have to. I would have gone there,” she said. “I appreciate it… That you came all the way here to hand over these.”
“I was gonna come yesterday, but I thought you might want to have some time with Circe. Whatever happened yesterday, it was distressing. I can't imagine what you have gone through. Oh, bless that man who saved her! He was like a miracle that had never happened before,” Nori sighed and looked at Coronis's hands that were resting on her lap. Hesitantly, she held them. “I'm glad that you are okay…,” They looked into each other's eyes. Nori saw grief in them, pain that was pouring out. “Are you?”
Coronis bit her lower lip to keep herself from crying out loud. Her eyes dampened with tears. Her body shook slightly and her shoulders shivered. Slowly, her tears trickled down her cheek. A painful sob echoed in the shack. She could feel the pain rising in her heart. Has she ever cried about her pain to someone? No.
“Uh,” Nori panicked. She looked around to see what could help her to calm down Coronis. But then the crying girl held her hands and rested her forehead on them. “I'm not okay!”
Nori realized she didn't want to hear something. Coronis just wanted to let out the pain that she had been hiding behind those cold, dead stares. No one is ever so strong. Everyone falls sometimes. It is hard to keep going when life has always given pain and nothing else. What it was like to be happy anyway? What exactly was happiness? Did it feel good? Did it last forever? Was it something that stayed forever and healed the broken parts? Or was it just a creation of some people to make them feel better about themselves and maybe for a short time, forget the pain that killed them alive?
“I hit her,” Coronis choked up. “I hit her so much. Her face was swollen. Her hands were bleeding,” Nori's eyes widened but caressed her hair. “I was so scared. I was scared to lose her. She never listens to me. I was infuriated!”
“It's alright,” Nori whispered, her own eyes getting damp. “You did nothing wrong. In fact, she will never go against you ever again. It's for her own good, Coronis. Don't beat yourself up.”
Her sweet voice tingled something inside her. She looked up with her swollen eyes and asked, “Am I going to be okay?”
Nori let her tears out. Her lips frowned, trying to not burst out herself. “Yeah! Yeah, you are going to be okay,” she cried. “You and I are going to be okay. Everyone is going to be okay, yeah?” she rubbed her thumbs on Coronis's cheeks. “One day, we will see what happiness is like. One day, we both will breathe the air of love. One day, this world will fall in love with kindness.”
Coronis or Nori didn't know what it was. Was it the vulnerability of the moment or the hidden liking for each other? But they felt a pull towards one another. Their teary eyes shifted at their lips. Nori couldn't keep it more. She let her feelings win and softly took Coronis's lips. Their lips were chapped but the spark was real. Nori cupped her face and kissed her passionately. Their tongues were lapping and their teeth were clashing.
“Please, Nori,” Nori has never heard Coronis as weak as she sounded now. “Please make me forget the pain. Touch me more,” she whispered and placed the girl's hand on her clothed breasts. “Touch me like this is your first and last… Please.”
Without holding back, they stumbled into the slot and closed the door. They sat down in front of each other. They both reached out to undo each other's blouses as they hugged. Coronis littered Nori's neck and shoulder with kisses.
They were bare in front of each other in just a couple of moments. Their nipples hardened when the cold air touched their bodies. They admired, and cherished each other.
“I have never seen someone so beautiful,” Nori said as she cupped Coronis's breasts. “So soft and pretty,” Coronis pulled her in a steamy kiss.
Their hands down their bodies, trying to remember every single curve. Their lips melted together. “I want more,” Coronis whispered against her lips.
Nori quickly pushed her back and spread her legs to see her. She kissed right below her belly button and moved down. Coronis was already wet enough for Nori to put her fingers in. She rubbed her slit with her finger and slowly eased one finger in making Coronis moan.
Nori spread her pussy lips and licked a long strip. She hummed at her sweet taste. It was the moment when Nori realized how much wanted to have her. She still remembered the day they first met. They were about five or six. At first sight, she loved her. She thought it was a childish attraction. But the older they grew, she fell harder and harder.
Whenever they crossed paths, Coronis would smile at her and call her, and say sweet things to her. It made her adore her more than she already did. Coronis's smiles hide sadness yet she lets the curve of her lips go up for her, genuinely.
“Nori,” Coronis moaned. “Come here.” She gestured towards her.
“What's wrong?” Nori asked.
“Sit on my face.”
Nori looked at her with her mouth wide open. “What?”
“I want to taste you, pleasure you,” said she as she pulled Nori on her face, her face facing towards Coronis's bare body.
Nori bent down and worked her lips on her. Their moans resounded through the slot. They were desperate for the touch, and the pleasure. It was both of their first times ever touching someone willingly. Their chests heaved up and down. Their bodies were covered in sweat. The sweet scent of their arousal wrapped around them. Their tongues worked on each other seductively, pulling each other to the climax.
Nori lay down next to Coronis who was still trying to catch her breath. She admired Coronis, looking at how her chest moved, her lips were now swollen and looking luscious. Her hair was sticking to her forehead and her eyes were unfocused.
“Coronis,” She called and her face tilted toward her to look into her eyes. “I don't know what it means to you… But, you mean more than just a friend to me. Since we first met, I have always wanted to be with you. You made my day. You are the only person who I find genuine in my life in this hell hole… For so long, I looked up to you from afar,” she dumbly chuckled. “I kept on wanting to touch, hold you. I felt so dumb. Like… Like, I can't even put these feelings into words. I- I have. I don't know. Bu–”
Coronis kissed her lips to calm her down. “We have all the time in the world for you to tell me however you feel, Nori. Let's just hold each other and live this moment.”
The door of the shack opened, showing Martha and Circe coming in. They saw Coronis and Nori sitting by the table, drinking tea.
“Ah, Nori! What brings you here?” Martha smiled.
“Coronis forgot some of her stuff at my shop, I had come to return it. I'll be taking my leave soon,” said she.
“No, no. Love, I just came back home,” Martha sat down with them. “You should spend a little more time. The evening is still young. And I'm sure Circe would love to talk to you.”
Circe awkwardly smiled and looked at her sister who was sitting facing Nori and not once looked at her. “I'm tired… I'll go and get fresh,” she left.
“It's okay, Martha. I need to go and sit at the shop. I, um,” she chuckled shyly, looking at Coronis. “I already stayed here for the whole day… I'm sure Coronis has to do her job too.”
Coronis smiled at her, “I'll see her off,” and said to her mother.
After the final greetings, the girls walked out of the shack, Nori stopped and looked at Coronis who was standing there with a soft smile. “I hope I will see you soon?”
“I'll stop by your shop, Nori… I can help you there if you want,” She offered.
“Just sit there and be pretty,” Nori bit her lower lip. “That's all I want you to do.”
With that, they hugged one last time and Nori walked away. Coronis wanted her to stay for more. But it would have been scary for her to go back at night. She had never felt this content in her shack. The burden she was carrying was somewhat duller. With everything going on around her, the way everything was falling apart, Nori came in like a warm sun.
Coronis's thoughts were crushed when she caught the sight of those dark, viscous eyes. A chill ran down her spine, knowing he was looking right into her eyes.
As better as she felt, new trouble set in her head. She shouldn't have let it happen. What if he came to know about it? Did he already know? Her beautiful eyes widened when he raised his glass towards her.
She quickly went back inside her shack and got to her work. She poured the ingredients for the bread which was not for the king. And added some dry fruits. She could see through the window of the kitchenette as the horses went by. She looked up, her heart skipped a beat when she made eye contact with him again. This time, from much closer. He stopped there and kept on looking.
She wasn't sure if he was that captive or if it was the fear of upsetting him, she just couldn't look away.
What would happen if she did choose him over her? This lonely question made her panic. This could not happen. But was it her choice to choose? No. It was his choice. She could only hope he leaves her alone.
He was a man of his king, she thought. He must be as dominant as his King. The Lord they say.
Those eyes. They made her shiver. Oh, did she pray for him to move away. She could feel her knees weakening. Why did she drag Nori into this?
“Coronis? Where did you get that locket from, that you were wearing yesterday?”

Fear and panic over the prospect of people eating insects is so funny. Like every now and then there’s some startup company about insects as food and it makes rightwingers run around like beheaded chickens because apparently the existence of people that eat insects means the UN is going to bolt their children to chairs and force feed them live centipedes through a tube

Why, then, did the killings go on for so long? The same irrationality lies at the heart of many other mass murders. In the Soviet Union, for example, shooting or jailing political opponents at first helped the Communist Party and then Josef Stalin gain absolute power. But after there were no visible opponents left, seven million more people were executed, and many millions more died in the far-flung camps of the gulag. So many engineers were seized that factories came to a halt; so many railway men died that some trains did not run; so many colonels and generals were shot that the almost leaderless Red Army was nearly crushed by the German invasion of 1941.
In the Congo, as in Russia, mass murder had a momentum of its own. Power is tempting, and in a sense no power is greater than the ability to take someone's life. Once under way, mass killing is hard to stop; it becomes a kind of sport, like hunting. Congo annals abound in cases like that of René de Permentier, an officer in the Equator district in the late 1890s. The Africans nicknamed him Bajunu (for bas genoux, on your knees), because he always made people kneel before him. He had all the bushes and trees cut down around his house at Bokatola so that from his porch he could use passersby for target practice. If he found a leaf in a courtyard that women prisoners had swept, he ordered a dozen of them beheaded. If he found a path in the forest not well-maintained, he ordered a child killed in the nearest village.
Two Force Publique officers, Clément Brasseur and Léon Cerckel, once ordered a man hung from a palm tree by his feet while a fire was lit beneath him and he was cooked to death. Two missionaries found one post where prisoners were killed by having resin poured over their heads, then set on fire. The list is much longer.
Michael Herr, the most brilliant reporter of the Vietnam War, captures the same frenzy in the voice of one American soldier he met: "We'd rip out the hedges and burn the hooches and blow all the wells and kill every chicken, pig and cow in the whole fucking ville. I mean, if we can't shoot these people, what the fuck are we doing here?" When another American, Francis Ford Coppola, tried to put the blood lust of that war on film, where did he turn for the plot of his Apocalypse Now? To Joseph Conrad, who had seen it all, a century earlier, in the Congo.

I love Collateral almost as much as Boy Blue, you know that 👀❤️ I suck at catching updates because I'm always running around like a beheaded chicken half the time but I don't miss them. ❤️❤️❤️
Question: I don't know if you have thought about writing anything "devil" related. Not that I want to add work to your list or anything, just genuinely curious. I think the way you write angs would suit it. ❤️
Sending lots of love and wishes on easy writing 💕🥰
Cherryyyy!!!! i'm so glad you like this story! (no need to apologize lol i am literally MONTHS behind on the list of things i need to read. life is so hectic.)
i have a plan for a demon possession story but i haven't had a chance to actually write it. but that is as close to anything devil-related as i have come. i am definitely interested in doing more of this kind of stuff at some point (after i have finished the Boy Blue sequel maybe, idk.) i wasn't raised anywhere near christianity/catholicism, so it'll take some research if i want to go that route. but we'll see if something happens! i am thrilled that you think i would do well with that kind of subject matter! <3 take care, my darling!!!

Not to be a horror hater nit picker etc but we are watching the Saw series and I keep getting catching inaccuracies in the gore scenes, most of them being missed opportunity. Like you ripped their rip cage open reverse bear trap style with hooks all up in there, where is the weighty splat of visvera plopping to the floor once the abdominal wall has been ruptured?
I dont think anything will top the disillusion moment in one of those "rainforest plane crash turns cannibalism" numbers where the beheaded limbless torsos are getting cooked without being dressed, let alone. When there are pigs and chickens running around.

THE PINK MAN
The pink man clicked his fingers at me. I went over to this table.
 “Yes, sir?” I said.
“We have a problem,” the pink man said. He was holding a fork.
 “What’s the issue, sir?”
 “That.”
He nodded down. I didn’t understand and I blinked. He nodded, again, at his fork.
 “That,” he said. “It’s dirty.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry, sir. The fork isn’t clean?”
 “No, it is not.”
“Apologies about that,” I took the utensil off of him, “I hope you’re enjoying your starters at least?”
He chewed his food. His family watched me. The family consisted of a boy and girl, in their teens, and a wife/woman, who was white haired and overweight, whom I’d never heard speak. The pink man was the only audibly verbal person. They were regulars at the restaurant.
The offensive fork was now in my hand. I thought about plunging it into pink man’s neck. It would be so enjoyable. It was a mad, plush, lovely imagination, though only fleeting.
“Okay well, let me know when you’re ready for your mains,” I said, and then left and went across the floor into the kitchen, where the chefs had ringed me to take more plates out.
The chefs were remarkably calm people – lads, around my age (in their mid to late twenties) – despite having to work fourteen hour shifts. Some of them did seventy hours per week. Their tactics in their worklives was to do lots of practical jokes, talk about trivial stuff, chat about the waitresses who we fancied. There wasn’t much else to do.
“The pink man,” I said to them, when I came into the kitchen, “is moaning again.”
“Oh, he’s in. Again,” the head chef said, “what’s his problem this time?”
“This fork is too dirty to use.”
I showed them the fork. They shrugged. The KP was this twitchy guy who stayed in the corner by his dishwasher; he always made weird noises, like he was a bird or a cat. He didn’t give a shit about the fork, he just put it in his cutlery bucket.
“Tell the pink man to go fuck himself,” the head chef said, and winked.
 “I’d like to.”
I had to take other plates out to a different table. This was a Sunday. And a hundred people every Sunday ordered roasts, you know, classic Sunday roasts with chicken and beef and gravy and peas on so on.
Weirdly, a lot of them never finished the chickens. There were all of these dead beheaded chickens in the oven and the chefs cut those in half once they were cooked and then hunk it on a plate with a bath of gravy and co. Barely anybody ever ate a full roast plate and you should have seen how much waste just went into the food bin in the kitchen. The flayed bodies of birds.
Lots of people liked the smell but I hated it.
Once back on the floor, I passed the pink man and his family. We called him pink man because, 1. We didn’t know his first name, and, 2. He always wore this pink shirt, which seemed to accentuate his already-pink neck: he forever looked drunk and coloured in the face, with high blood pressure or whatnot.
Widely renowned, this man was, for being rude to the workers in the restaurant. Not just me.
I wondered if he’d ever had to work a minimum wage job in his life. Whether he’d ever once been young and poor. Or if he’d had a job in hospitality. Maybe he had – and remembered what it was like – and resented us because of those bad memories. Or, perhaps he hadn’t, and saw himself as financially superior. That ‘posh arrogance’ or whatever you’d like to call it. Or, more realistically, the pink man only enjoyed being mean.
Cos we couldn’t do anything back to him.
Most of the people that dined in the restaurant weren’t mean; they were polite and complimentary and ate their food and left.
As were the people that I served the plates to now. They smiled, and thanked me, and I left.
It was around six o’clock – the rush hours had passed earlier in the afternoon and there weren’t that many people on the floor at this point.
Because it had been so heavy earlier, we’d run out a lot of the roast meat. The chickens were aplenty but the pork had just ran out the last hour.
I heard the waiter bell ding in the background. Meaning I had to go back to the kitchen. And, on the way, guess what?: the pink man clicked his fingers at me. His adolescent kids enjoyed gaping at me, it seemed.
“How’s it going sir?” I said.
“We’d like to order the mains.”
 “Brilliant, what would you like?”
I took their orders. Or, rather, the pink man told me what his wife and kids would like to eat. His wife wanted some pork with her roast meal.
“Ah, I regret to say, sir, that we don’t have any pork any longer.”
 “Huh?”
“I’m very sorry but we’ve ran out of pork. But there is still beef and chicken, still. And some lamb, if you’d like?”
He tutted. And turned to his woman and said, “Is that okay with you?”
She gave him a thumbs up. Her necklaces glinted and she had these maroon-painted nails and was usually more drunk than pink man was. I took down the details from him (as he kept chewing the remains of his starters) and left.
Fifteen minutes later I was called into the kitchen to take four roast plates out to pink man’s family. I wasn’t a good enough waiter to carry four plates at once. So I did two at a time. The first two I gave to him and the wife, and then I went back to get the other ones. When I returned the second time, pink man was scowling at me. Properly wrathful. And his skin colour had deepened to red.
“Are you joking me!” he said.
 “What’s the matter sir?”
He was holding a knife this time. A butter knife.
“Are you the one that cleans the dishes?” he said.
 “No.”
 “Who is it, then?”
“Well, one of my colleagues in the kitchen.”
“Look at that knife! Does that look clean to you?”
It did. Look clean. But I didn’t say this to him. There was a whole load of things I did want to say, instead, but I clamped them down. I apologised. Again. And took the knife away and brought him a new knife. Knives are far more lethal utensils than forks and there were further wonderful visions of attacking this obnoxious man.
Elsewhere, the other tables finished dining and vacated. I made a cup of coffee and drank it. I thought about how it was kinda self inflicted that I was working this shitty job. Minimum wage. I was 29, for fuck’s sake. What was I doing here? Laziness, I suppose. If I were 19 years old I wouldn’t have pictured myself being here ten years henceforth. It was my own fault … and similarly gloomy thoughts proliferated.
I wished I could just bail. Wished that my two degrees (I had an MA and an MSc degree) would help me get a better job. I longed for this shift to be over, and I had four more hours to go. And I knew that that table was still there.
I wondered, when I saw pink man, what he did for a living. What his hobbies were, if he had any. Was he really a nice person to his significant others? Was there some horrible story of how he was abused my his father (verbally and in a disciplinary sense, I mean) when he was younger, which would explain the way he was?
Snapping his thumb and middle finger at me didn’t make me feel like a dog. Cos most people like dogs and are friendly to them. Dogs are likeable cheery animals and you don’t get their attention to cause offense.
“Would you like the desserts now?” I said to him.
He was way into the wine. I got the dessert orders. They were sundae glasses, ice cream and berries and chocolate sauce and,
“My wife would like some toffee sauce instead of chocolate. Do you still have toffee sauce?”
 “Uh hu.”
 “Sorry?”
 “Yeah.”
 “Yeah what?”
 “We still have toffee sauce.”
 “Why are you being rude?”
 “I am not.”
“You don’t speak to customers like that.”
“Didn’t mean anything by it. I’ll get your sundaes for you.”
 I didn’t care anymore.
If you were to put this man into a military zone. A war zone, I mean: drop him off in a helicopter in Yemen, or the Sudan, or Syria, or even Ukraine (the one that Westerners seem to care about) … if you could pop him randomly in such a place, would he act the same way? How long would he last? Or, if you were to fly him out to Alaska or the Antarctica, drop him on the tundra, would his ego remain intact?
He must’ve been in his fifties. I was 29, and still on minimum wage. But I also knew that I wouldn’t be a cunt if I ever got past mu 50th birthday.
I went into the kitchen for the desserts. The KP was the person that made the desserts – it was his job as well as the dishes.
He was an interesting young man who would ask you conversational questions and he found eye contact hard and was insanely shy but you liked him and he was studied and underemployed as well and he was actually a total belter of a KP – he never put in a bad shift.
“Is this for pink man’s table?” he asked.
 “Yeah.”
“They complained about my ice cream the other week.”
“What was wrong with the ice cream?”
“They said it was ‘too melted’. It’d melted too much and was all liquidy.”
 I laughed.
He finished making the sundaes. They looked glorious. Could belong on a billboard advert.
I carried them out unto the colosseum. Using the same tactic as before – to give to the adults before the kids, two at a time, scared that I might drop something. Was full of hate and despondency, despite how much I loved the colleagues.
Unto the floor. I saw pink man’s head. He didn’t do the fingers this time – only pointed at his empty glass. He wanted another drink.
I picked up the speed as I crossed to the table. Then I pretended that there was something under my foot. Some object was under my boot. That snagged my gait. And it hit me and then I pretended to fall over.
And I aimed one of the sundae glasses at the pink man. During the fall. Projected all the sugary junk at him.
It went all over his cheeks.
At the same time I dropped the other glass. Because I didn’t want to hit the kids or the woman. Only him. And that glass rolled away.
The glass that I’d flung at him landed the right side of me and it didn’t smash. (Which I regret. I wish it would’ve smashed.)
I thought I did an okay thespian. The clumsy waiter.
“Oh, jeepers,” I said, standing up. And I addressed pink man. The cream and sauce and berries were all over his skull and his shirt and the content sluiced down towards his jeans. He sat. Stunned.
 “Oh no,” his wife said.
“Dad, are you okay?” his daughter said.
“What’d you do that for?” his son said, looking at me.
 “I didn’t mean it,” I said.
 And I laughed.
I could not help it. Just smirked. You know when you ejaculate some laughter and it infects you. And you can’t override the avalanche.
“I’ll run into the kitchen and get you some hankies.”
 I left.
Never saw the pink man’s family again after that night. They never came back. They put in a complaint against me. I got fired.
But, it’s one of my finest moments. Non violent revenge. Finest form of vengeance.

The Animals of the House I Loved Chapter 0-1
The Animals of the House I Loved- All the Pets I Ever Had - By Sarah Ali Wednesday 13 July 2022 - 1 September 2022 About 13,848 Words or 71,814 Characters Warning: Swearing, Illness, Death, Animal Abuse, Fighting Animals, Castration 0./25 Intro There is a great need in me to write this text. Even though I'm only 28, I can feel the memories slowly fading. So I want to lock them in just to be safe. My name is Sarah Ali, I am a trans woman. I was born in 1995, and live since 2021 as a woman. Simply put, I love animals. You can tell how far advanced a society is by how well they treat animals and treat people. Animals have a certain innocence, they do not possess, or to a lesser extent the self-consciousness and responsibility of a person. If you have a pet you can feel this, they are part of the family, they are a family member. I once heard the following: a dog is like a heater of love, as soon as there is a dog in the house or near it, you get love from it, you just have to look at it. I'm talking about platonic love, of course. I would also like to say that all our dogs and cats, neutered and sterilized. In this way we prevent the overpopulation of animals. 1./25 Zola, the Cat and the Chick Warning: Animal Death, Dead Animal Parts, Euthanasia, Animal Abuse Let's start before the beginning, my parents! I have two mothers, a mum and a mooka. My mum used to have a cat, she had named him Zola after a writer I think. The cat liked to eat ice cream. Animals are sensitive to maggots, especially at their buttocks, it is something you often have to check on animals, especially rabbits I've read. Anyway, Mum found out that Zola had worms, so she took him to the vet as soon as possible, but it was too late. Zola couldn't make it anymore, and was given an injection, to sleep forever. My mooka, I think she was about 9 at the time. It might have been the 70's or the 80's I don't know, but her mother, my grandmother, had bought chicks for my mother and her sister. She even let them roam around free in the house. My mooka didn't pay attention, and went to get a glass of water, suddenly she heard "crack!". It was as if a bucket of ice was suddenly thrown over her heart, she hardly dared look. She had stepped on a chick with her shoe! The poor creature. To this day my mother still feels guilty about it. My mum's grandma and grandpa (my great-grandparents) had chickens. They slaughter these birds and then eat them. My mother was still a child, but she had seen the film 'Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock. Her brother (my uncle) often took one of the chicken claws to tease mum. Apparently there was a tendon in those legs, and if you pulled on it, the leg closed. That's how he scared the ship out of mum! Also at my mooka's house chickens were sometimes slaughtered for dinner, she remembered how her mother had beheaded a chicken, the chicken's legs kept floundering and her mother had accidentally let it go, leaving the chicken running around! Apparently this is something that can happen, hence the Dutch proverb: "To walk around like a headless chicken.", it means that you walk around nervous or in a panic, not knowing what to do. This all sounds rather sinister, I suspect it's different times now. Animals are still being slaughtered, but it happens more secluded, in slaughterhouses. You can then ask yourself whether humanity will not become alienated from the animals that we eat. And whether it is more ethical in larger factories and slaughterhouses. People, now, often use a cattle gun or bolt pistol
where an animal is slaughtered quickly and painlessly (or as painlessly as possible). With this gun, a metal pin is inserted into the skull, and shot through the animal's brain, this goes so fast that the creature is immediately brain dead.

Skeleton's kid is running around the pool. Suddenly, they slips and falls in the water. Skeleton sees it.
Undertale Sans - Oh shit. He uses his blue magic to fetch the kid out of the water, then runs to pick them up, to check if they're ok. He got the scare of his life.
Undertale Papyrus - He was cooking with the barbecue. He gasps, lets go of everything, and jumps in the pool to save his child, forgetting he can't float. Papyrus pushes the kid back on the edge and then uses his floating ability to get out of there, his eye sockets flooded with water. Oh yeah, the barbecue is on fire now.
Underswap Sans - He asks for his kid to come closer to the edge, then picks them up out of there. God, he's never telling this to S/O. The kid was under his watch and he messed up really bad.
Underswap Papyrus - He screams in terror then jumps in the water. He grabs his child and puts them back on the ground, before getting out. Honey picks the child up and runs to the hospital to make sure they're ok, even if they're fine. Arriving there, he passes out on the floor lol.
Underfell Sans - He stares for long seconds before brutally realizing he's an idiot and S/O will kill him. He quickly picks up the kid with his magic and runs into the house to dry them before S/O notices.
Underfell Papyrus - He taught his kid to deal with these types of situations a long time ago and simply watch them struggle until they saved themselves. He then only goes to comfort them, saying they did a good job. That's how you're learning in his world. Next time, you'll be more careful.
Horrortale Sans and Papyrus - Oak gets flashbacks of that drowning trap in Snowdin and he's suddenly paralyzed, breathing heavily, and unable to do anything. A chance Willow was near and quickly noticed what was happening, running to rescue the child. Willow will lecture the child while patting Oak on the back, who is feeling terribly guilty for doing nothing.
Swapfell Sans - Oh man :( He's wearing a handmade suit. Does he really have to jump in? Urgh. He undresses for long seconds, before jumping in to save his child, who is exhausted and keeps crying. Why though? He saved them. Be grateful for Toriel's sake!
Swapfell Papyrus - He runs to save his child, slips hits his head on the edge, and sinks in. The kid saves themselves and runs to fetch Uncle Nox to save Rus. It's not like the skeleton can drown, but, you know, he's unconscious at the bottom of the pool, that can't be good either.
Fellswap Gold Sans - He somehow grabs the kid before he fell in the water. He looks like he doesn't care, but he's very attentive to his family and can react at the speed of light. That's quite impressive.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - He screams in utter panic and runs all around the pool like a beheaded chicken, screaming for help. Concerned neighbors called for rescue. When they're coming, that's a long time the kid saved themselves, though Coffee is still freaking out. They take Coffee in charge instead of the child.

late submission for qijiu week day 2 (curses/blessings)! have roughly 3k of lighthearted fic feat. outsider pov and getting together. rating: t
When Qi Qingqi returned from a mission with Yue Qingyuan’s unconscious body slung over one shoulder, the entirety of Cang Qiong Mountain imploded. Disciples ran everywhere like chickens with their heads cut off, and half of the Peak Lords followed suit.
Mu Qingfang didn’t know—or care—about any of that. He was the one that Qi Qingqi dumped Yue Qingyuan’s unconscious body on, and so it was up to him to try to find a cure.
For a sleeping curse, of all the absurd things.
The demon had supposedly been putting entire villages to sleep so she could feast on their dreams. The stories had been alarming enough to warrant sending two Peak Lords to deal with the problem, but everybody had agreed it was probably overkill.
Well. Apparently not.
At least Qi Qingqi had managed to behead the thing after it’d cursed Yue Qingyuan.
Demons rarely used sleeping curses. It was an impractically complicated method to get something that could be achieved with simple knockout powder or any blunt object.
Unlike knockout powder or a blunt object, Mu Qingfang didn’t have the cure sitting readily on his shelf.
He was just starting to sift through what he did have when the distant crash of his door slamming open interrupted his concentration. He grimaced. One of these days, Shang Qinghua was finally going to snap and go after Liu Qingge for destroying so many doors.
“Where is he?” a voice demanded, as low and snarling and dangerous as any demon.
Mu Qingfang hastily put down his things and made for the entrance room as the danger level ratcheted up from Liu Qingge to Shen Qingqiu.
Sure enough, Shen Qingqiu was standing in the doorway, glaring one of Mu Qingfang’s disciples into a nervous wreck. “Tell me where he is, you sniveling brat.”
The poor boy looked like he was about to faint. Mu Qingfang came into the room and smiled pleasantly. “I would appreciate it if you could refrain from insulting my disciples, Shen-shixiong.”
Shen Qingqiu whirled on him, and the little disciple let out a squeak and ran for it. Mu Qingfang would have to scold him later, but he wouldn’t be too stern. All his disciples were terrified of Shen Qingqiu, and  for good reason. The man looked absolutely livid, his usual affected loftiness abandoned for a raw fury that even Liu Qingge couldn’t draw from him. At his hip, Xiu Ya rattled in its sheath. “Do not make me repeat myself.”
Mu Qingfang’s smile didn’t slip. “Zhangmen-shixiong is currently resting in a private room.”
“Resting,” Shen Qingqiu repeated, the word dripping with derision. He opened his fan with a sharp snap of his wrist, and his dark eyes glinted over its edge. “Let me see him.”
“Ah.” Introducing an element as volatile as Shen Qingqiu to a sick room was invariably a terrible idea. Explicitly telling him so was an even worse one. “Shen-shixiong, I’m afraid that Zhangmeng-shixiong’s state is currently very delicate. It would be best if he didn’t receive visitors right now.”
If looks could kill, Mu Qingfang would be a smear on the floor right now. “Was I asking?”
As mildly as ever, Mu Qingfang said, “I wasn’t aware that Shen-shixiong and Zhangmen-shixiong were close? If Shen-shixiong is truly so worried, then I suppose a brief visit would not be remiss.”
Shen Qingqiu’s eyes widened over his fan. “I’m not worried,” he snapped, “I am merely doing my duty, as the lord of Cang Qiong Mountain’s second peak.”
Got him. Mu Qingfang smiled, not at all smugly because he still had common sense and Shen Qingqiu still had Xiu Ya. “Shen-shixiong is truly admirable. Zhangmen-shixiong is still sleeping, and this one was just about to create a cure.”
Shen Qingqiu floundered as gracefully and loftily as he did anything else. After a beat, he closed his fan with a snap and whirled around. “Fine. Do it quickly.”
“Of course.”
Shen Qingqiu drew Xiu Ya in a dramatic sweep and leapt into the air. Mu Qingfang squinted after him. He was heading in the direction of Xian Shu Peak, which was not where he should be going if he was truly “doing his duty as the lord of Cang Qiong Mountain’s second peak.”
Which— interesting. Mu Qingfang hadn’t been aware that Yue Qingyuan’s frankly painfully obvious affections were returned with anything other than reluctant tolerance.
He could think of no other reason for Shen Qingqiu to go haring off to Xian Shu Peak if it wasn’t to harass Qi Qingqi for more information about the demon that had cursed Yue Qingyuan.
Well. At least that was a better use for his energy than pestering healers who had work to do.
Mu Qingfang gave it an hour before either Shen Qingqiu or Qi Qingqi got fed up enough with each other to draw a blade, which should give him at least an hour and a half before anybody came running to him for emergency healing.
With a sigh, he got to work.
---
It took them forty minutes. Mu Qingfang barely resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose as a hysterical Xian Shu disciple babbled about how Shen Qingqiu had attacked Qi Qingqi—
“Like a beast! For no reason at all!” the girl cried, “He’s going to kill her!”
Mu Qingfang considered his options. He didn’t like Shen Qingqiu, but he would never deny the man the respect he deserved. He was acerbic and impossible to work with, but he would never just attack Qi Qingqi for no reason. It was far more likely that she’d snapped at him and he—in his state of heightened stress—had overreacted and then she had overreacted too.
Mu Qingfang smiled his most dangerous smile. “I’m sorry. I don’t think I heard you properly. Would shizhi mind repeating herself?”
The girl made a vague choking sound and hastily dropped into a bow. “This humble disciple apologizes for her disrespect! She—humbly—requests that Mu-shishu sends medical aid to Xian Shu Peak!”
Mu Qingfang kept smiling, because otherwise he was going to make a very unattractive expression. “What exactly did Shen-shixiong and Qi-shijie get themselves into?”
The girl wavered, still refusing to meet his gaze. “This disciple is unsure. Guo-shijie sent this one here as a— as a precautionary measure before anything terrible happened.”
Mu Qingfang did not have time for this. He sent her away along with a handful of his best disciples to assuage her wide-eyed look of terror and irritably returned to his work. If Shen Qingqiu or Qi Qingqi got themselves hurt badly enough to need his help, then they’d need to wait their turn.
---
Thirty minutes later, there was another knock on his door. With a heavy sigh, Mu Qingfang gathered himself and went to open it. To his surprise, Shen Qingqiu was standing outside. He had his fan raised to cover the lower half of his face, and his hair and robes were only mildly ruffled by his flight here and whatever brawl he’d gotten into with Qi Qingqi.
Mu Qingfang just smiled and waited. It would do Shen Qingqiu some good to have to actually ask for what he wanted.
Those dark eyes narrowed over his fan. “Have you made any progress in your research?”
Mu Qingfang kept smiling, because otherwise he’d probably bang his head into the door. Did Shen Qingqiu think that constant interruptions were the ideal environment for productive work? Is that what was happening here?
It didn’t seem like he really wanted an answer, because Shen Qingqiu continued, “Qi-shimei shared the details of the incident with me. I would like to inspect our Zhangmen-shixiong’s condition myself.” He lowered his fan to reveal a smile that suggested it wasn’t a question.
Mu Qingfang did sigh this time, because apparently Shen Qingqiu cared about Yue Qingyuan! Who knew! Definitely not somebody who’d been forced to sit through their sniping at meetings, that was for sure. “Shen-shixiong may come in,” he allowed, “so long as he maintains the peace of the chambers.”
There was no point keeping him out, after all. He was practically vibrating with stress as it was, and there was no way he wouldn’t cause some other disaster if Mu Qingfang turned him away now.
“Of course.” Shen Qingqiu closed his fan with a snap. “No need for Mu-shidi to chaperone. I’m sure he has much to do.” Without waiting for a response, he strode past Mu Qingfang and through the door to Yue Qingyuan’s sick room.
Which. Great. Excellent.
Mu Qingfang spent exactly three seconds valiantly staring at his work before giving up and following after Shen Qingqiu, fully prepared to do some kind of damage control. To his surprise, the other man was standing motionless in Yue Qingyuan’s doorway, toes barely over the threshold. The hand holding his fan was white with tension.
Cautiously, Mu Qingfang said, “Shen-shixiong is free to enter.”
Shen Qingqiu’s shoulders tensed. He turned, unfolding his fan with a smooth, languid motion and bringing it up to cover the lower half of his face as he peered at Mu Qingfang. “Mu-shidi should get back to work. Cang Qiong Mountain needs our sect leader, after all.”
Mu Qingfang stared at him. Shen Qingqiu’s eyes were the color of lakewater at its murkiest. They were a deep grey-green, and they were filled with something terrible and unreadable, something that was somehow even more frightening than his usual hissing, spitting fury.
Ah, he thought, suddenly.
“I’ll find a cure,” he promised.
Shen Qingqiu’s fingers tightened around his fan. His eyes narrowed, as if he were about to scoff, but in the end he just looked back through the door at Yue Qingyuan’s unconscious form, arms tucked neatly at his sides and blanket drawn up to his chest. Without another word, he turned and stalked out.
---
Mu Qingfang read many, many scrolls. He looked through all his notes, attempted all his usual solutions, but the demon’s sleeping curse was tenacious. It clung stubbornly to Yue Qingyuan, locking him in dreams no matter what Mu Qingfang tried.
In the end, there was only one solution left.
. . . Shen Qingqiu was going to eviscerate him.
---
“Are you telling me,” Shen Qingqiu hissed, all but vibrating with poorly-disguised fury, “that the only solution is to sleep with him?!”
“Dual cultivation with a suitably powerful partner, yes,” Mu Qingfang replied evenly, smiling as if he wasn’t sweating bullets. The other Peak Lords, summoned for an update on their sect leaders’ condition and now attempting to melt into their chairs to avoid Shen Qingqiu’s rapidly building wrath, happily avoided eye contact. Liu Qingge had probably zoned out two sentences into the meeting.
Shen Qingqiu tilted his chin up, both dismissive and derisive all at once. “You have access to resources of the most powerful sect in the cultivation world, and the best you can give me is dual cultivation.”
Mu Qingfang did not flinch. It would’ve been a near miss, but Shen Qingqiu’s now obvious affection and concern for Yue Qingyuan had diminished his wrath to the hissing of an overprotective kitten and also Mu Qingfang was probably running on a few too many days without sleep. So he said, “Unfortunately, yes, that is accurate.”
Shen Qingqiu’s eyes locked onto him. Several tense moments passed. Shang Qinghua, several chairs away and not at all involved in the action, was nearly purple with stress. Finally, Shen Qingqiu stepped back, drawing his anger into some secret part of himself until nothing was left but a cold, cruel elegance. “Well! How far the majesty of Cang Qiong Mountain has fallen.” His lip curled into a sardonic sneer. “If I am ever cursed and the only solution is to sleep with my unconscious corpse, then just slit my throat and put us all out of our mistry.”
Somewhere in the back of the room, somebody mumbled, “Please.”
Shen Qinggqiu’s teeth clicked together. “Mu-shidi,” he said, in the same voice that made Mu Qingfang’s disciples piss themselves, “Surely there are some books on my Qing Jing Peak that you haven’t yet looked over. How can you make a diagnosis when you haven't done all the research yet?”
Mu Qingfang considered slamming his head onto the table. Unfortunately, he doubted that Shen Qingqiu’s mood was permissive enough to allow such dramatics.
. . . it was never permissive enough to allow such dramatics.
With the pleasant smile of a man who had definitely already read every single relevant book on Cang Qiong Mountain, he said, “I suppose I may have been remiss in my responsibilities. Zhangmen-shixiong’s condition is in no danger of worsening, and so there is no harm in further examining what information we have.”
Shen Qingqiu’s smile might as well have been fanged. “Good. I will drop them off as soon as possible.” With one last glare at the rest of the Peak Lords, he turned sharply on his heel and strode from the room in a flurry of green silks and danger.
Shang Qinghua sagged into the table. Qi Qingqi snorted and patted Mu Qingfang on the shoulder. “Good luck with that one, Mu-shidi.”
Mu Qingfang carefully did not stop smiling.
---
He waited until he was safely alone in his workshop before slamming his head on the table. It didn’t solve anything, but it did technically give him several seconds of shut-eye and that was better than nothing.
He was interrupted—once again—by the sound of his door violently slamming open.
“Shen-shixiong,” he said, peeling his face off his desk.
“Mu-shidi.” Shen Qingqiu sat down next to him and folded his hands neatly in his lap, deceptively demure. “Is dual cultivation really the only way to cure Zhangmen-shixiong of his curse?”
Mu Qingfang peered at Shen Qingqiu’s sleeves. They didn’t look very full, but there was no telling how many books the man had shoved into them. “There may perhaps—” Theoretically, possibly, somewhere. “—be other alternatives.”
Shen Qingqiu tilted his head down in acknowledgement, but his eyes never left Mu Qingfang’s. “But this is the best solution.” He didn’t wait for a response before adding, words crisp and only mildly colored by the revulsion he’d displayed in the meeting room earlier, “Dual cultivation with a suitably powerful partner is the best solution.”
“Yes,” Mu Qingfang said, not even bothering to summon his usual smile. It was what he’d already said in the meeting, after all, and Shen Qingqiu wasn’t looking for his smile anyways.
Shen Qingqiu’s lips turned white as he pressed them together. He didn’t speak, but the glint in his eyes made it clear that he was waiting for something.
Mu Qingfang had absolutely no idea what. If anything, all he’d learned from this entire affair—beyond the surprising effectiveness of sleeping curses—was that he could not read Shen Qingqiu whatsoever. Here he was, pale and tense and snappish for a man that the whole sect was convinced that he hated.
“Would—” Shen Qingqiu began, before stopping and scowling at the wall. “Would. My cultivation level. Work.”
“Oh.” Mu Qingfang wondered if he should even bother being surprised anymore. At least this was one thing he’d already known about his Shen-shixiong: he was an absolutely abysmal communicator. “Um.”
Shen Qingqiu’s cheeks colored, and he quickly said, “Not that I want to do this. But Zhangmen-shixiong deserves better than some brute like Liu Qingge, and there’s hardly a wealth of cultivators powerful enough to match him. So excuse this lowly one for his flawed foundation, but—”
Ah, what?! Mu Qingfang had not asked for any of this??? Hastily, before Shen Qingqiu could ramble himself into changing his mind, Mu Qingfang said, “Shen-shixiong, you are one of the most powerful cultivators in the world.” There was a reason that he’d been able to last as long as he had in duels with Liu Qingge in their youths. “You would absolutely, ah, work.”
Shen Qingqiu’s fan opened with a snap. It did little to hide the redness of his face. “Ah. Well. Good.”
“Right,” Mu Qingfang said.
They stared at each other.
Shen Qingqiu bristled, shoulders tilting upwards again, and Mu Qingfang realized abruptly that he was about to get eviscerated if he didn’t leave very, very soon. Quickly, Mu Qingfang exclaimed, “Well! Good. I’ll take my leave first, to allow you and Zhangmen-shixiong your privacy. You know how this works?”
“Of course I know how this works!” Shen Qingqiu yelped, too indignant to maintain an even tone.
Mu Qingfang smiled. It was perhaps his first genuine smile since Qi Qingqi had absconded after dumping Yue Qingyuan’s body in his arms. “Good. I’ll leave Shen-shixiong to it, then.”
Before Shen Qingqiu could figure out how to stop spluttering, Mu Qingfang gathered his things and quickly vacated the premises.
---
Well. He supposed that was one way to do things.
---
Yue Qingyuan was up and about by the next day. Any assumptions Mu Qingfang had had about Shen Qingqiu wanting to be private about his affairs were quickly dashed. Yue Qingyuan walked into the next Peak Lord meeting with, ah, marks visible high enough on his neck that his collar couldn’t cover them, and he seemed utterly incapable of keeping his eyes off of Shen Qingqiu.
Shen Qingqiu ignored him as usual, but Mu Qingfang was sitting close enough to see that they were holding hands under the table.
Which. Great. Excellent. Exactly what Mu Qingfang wanted to see at every sect meeting for the rest of his life.
“It’s all your fault, you know,” Liu Qingge said.
“I wouldn’t say that,” Mu Qingfang protested.
“No, it absolutely is,” Qi Qingqi said glumly, “I can’t believe we have to watch Zhangmen-shixiong making bedroom eyes at Shen Qingqiu every single month.”
Mu Qingfang put his head on the table. Maybe if he just ignored everything, it would all go away.
“Did you see them yesterday?” Qi Qingqi continued, “They were wearing matching outfits.”
Shang Qinghua, inexplicably, shot Mu Qingfang a strange gesture with both thumbs sticking up. “Nice.”
“No,” Liu Qingge said.
“Absolutely not,” Qi Qingqi agreed.

Tumblr media
Welcome, dear readers, to part 1 of the finale to the BackupKingdom2 saga! We’re in our final ambition now, let’s check how Liz’s post-divorce-bloodbath is going..
Tumblr media
Oh yes, excellent. Our path to death-achievement-glory has been paved with so many executions that wherever I look I see npcs crying..
Tumblr media
..comforting each other..
Tumblr media
..and in Agnes' case, coming straight to Liz to.. ask for mercy for the populace I guess?? Bruh. I can't believe we even brought down AGNES, truly this is the saddest kingdom on earth. Amazing job, Liz, you've definitely earned your place in the tyrant hall of fame!
Now a lesser player would be like "oh, maybe we should chill a little on the insane tyrant thing, finish the Pirate/Noble arc cause we've been dragging this war out so the pirates/guildsmen would keep spawning and it should have ended like 20 quests ago" and true, we could just end it, we ran a very effective operation around here, shoutout to MVPs Donius and Bellinda and their 'seductive' legendary traits:
Tumblr media
They bedded them and Liz beheaded them, the power of teamwork! So one could say that we should consider raising kingdom morale now because everyone is so depressed but I think, if anything, now is the time to ramp it up and go for some of the other morally questionable achievements! Like Machiavelli said, you should commit all your atrocities at once! What do you think, Liz? Ready to get atrocious?
Tumblr media
-OH FUCK YEA, I’M ENRAGED, I DROPPED MY FIDDLE IN THE PIT AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE SERVANT TO GET ME A NEW ONE!! WHY DOES EVERYTHING ALWAYS HAPPEN TO ME >:(
Aw I’m sorry Liz, but I’m sure you the upcoming suffering of your subjects will cheer you up!
Tumblr media
-Ok motherfuckers, by order of the Crown aka ME -you hear that Rae?? ME, NOT YOU. God I want to execute you so bad, fucking ingrate, do you remember what rags you were wearing when I hired you??
Let’s get this back on track, Liz.
-Right, so by order of the Crown, Magus Olivia and Spymaster Spainot are given COMPLETE LEGAL IMMUNITY to do whatever the fuck they want in the interest of earning achievements, so don’t you people come crying to me cause I don’t give one tiny chinchilla crap about your health and livelihoods. If you need me for something actually important, I'll be at the gates, executing anyone who doesn't like my fiddle playing.
Tumblr media
-Oh man, this folksy peasant hat isn’t protecting my ears enough.
Tumblr media
-THOUGHT I WOULDN’T HEAR YOUR LITTLE MURMUR, DID YOU  -YOUR MAJESTY NO I ONLY MEANT MY EARS WERE COLD -WELL ALL OF YOUR BODY’S ABOUT TO BE COLD NOW! CONSTABLE, THROW THIS PEASANT IN THE PIT
Tumblr media
-Death marker? I hardly know 'er!
So the Constable npc has this little Billy Elliot subplot going, I'm pretty sure he has the 'drunkard' fatal flaw because he was always at the tavern so I had Bellinda try to hire him to perform in one of her plays just to see what would happen and it actually worked, and now he moonlights as an actor! It's cute but it also takes forever for him to come arrest people.
Tumblr media
-THEY LOVE ME ❤️😁 -CONSTABLE WHATSYOURNAME, COME OVER HERE AND DO YOUR FUCKING JOB OR YOU'RE NEXT FOR THE PIT
Tumblr media
-No one knows what it's like to be the bad man, to be the sad man, when someone dies😢
In the background you can see that Bellinda just got a pregnancy bump, it’s her lovechild with Donius, I for real can’t keep these two apart. Anyway, the time has come..
Tumblr media
..to unleash Magus Olivia onto the populace.
-You know what, I'd rather not, this book is finally getting good and I'm sick of cursing peasants, it doesn't even drop their mood that much..
Oh no, Olivia my beloved, we're not cursing them, we're going for the 'Well Done' achievement!
-NO WAY.
WAY.
-Won't I be executed??
You have immunity! You can do whatever you want!! And, AND, once you complete it, because I know it's tiring, I'll give you a magic skeletal parrot as a gift!! Edward got all the materials for it while treasure-hunting, you'd think I'd let him keep it but that's not the kind of shop I'm running here.
Tumblr media
-This is my face of pure, childlike happiness!
Good lord, it’s terrifying, please don’t look at me like that.
Tumblr media
-Alright, time to roll down my sleeves so they look more sinister and do this thing.
You can do it, Olivia!
-Of course I can, save your reassurance for the flops that need it.
Tumblr media
-I.. cast.. INFERNO!
...
-What?
I mean really, those are the words, "I cast inferno"? Can't you say something with more evil magical flair?
-Not when I have to cast it 80 fucking times I can't.
Tumblr media
-IT BURNS, IT BURNSSSSS
Oh how the tables have turned, usually it's the witch that gets burned, huhu! Did you hear that, Olivia? Did you like my joke??
Tumblr media
-Oh, it's beautiful!
Well it wasn't one of my best-
-Not you, you needy moron, the sight of burning flesh! I can't wait to do this 79 more times!
Tumblr media
Alright, so everyone in the tavern has been turned into a chicken nugget, time to get some rest and check in with Spainot!
Tumblr media
-Amazing news, Rodolfo, I just got royal permission to unlawfully lock up and interrogate whoever I want for the achievements!!!
Tumblr media
-Darling, no offense, but aren't you a bit too shit at your job for that? -WHAT????
Tumblr media
-FUCK YOU RODOLFO YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS OF MY SUCCESS -I WISH I WAS JEALOUS OF YOUR SUCCESS, THEN YOU'D BE SUCCESSFUL AND I WOULDN'T BE MARRIED TO A BROKE LOSER
Tumblr media
-And then he says the only reason he hasn't dumped me is he doesn't wanna be a rando npc while Batshit Liz is on an execution spree, can you believe this bullshit? How can anyone be so hurtful??
Tumblr media
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA NO NO PLEASE DON'T HAVE THIS CHINCHILLA MAUL ME I'LL GIVE YOU WHATEVER YOU WANT
-How about you give me some marital advice, are you even listening?! Ugh.
Tumblr media
That's right, while Olivia is inferno-ing the peasants, I've sicced Spainot on the nobility, specifically all those foreign diplomats that are always hanging in the reception hall, lagging up the place. We're going for the 100 interrogations achievement and we’ve installed a nice spiky torture chair right in the middle of the hall to save time! Now this is how we keep every stratum of society terrified enough to not realize that the person in charge is.. uh.. well you know:
Tumblr media
-DANCE TO MY FIDDLE, PIRATE, DANCE!
-I AM!!!!!
-DANCE MORE ENTHUSIASTICALLY. ALL THE WAY TO THE PIT
Tumblr media
After a couple days and several locations I feel we’re pretty close to 80 infernos!
Tumblr media
I’d say we’ve burned a good 50-60% of the population at this point, everywhere I look I see singed townies-
Tumblr media
-so we take this little barbecue to the palace because we’ve ran out of peasants and it’s time to start burning the foreign dignitaries. And it’s a good thing we do, because Olivia meets Nyrexis the Dragon!!!!
Nyrexis is the human form of the dragon from a hilar quest where there’s a dragon in the kingdom and you can either befriend it or slay it, I had Bellinda befriend it:
Tumblr media
So if you complete the befriend route of the quest, the human form of the dragon appears in town and is in love with whoever did the quest, in this case Bellinda. I am of course not about to waste Dragonfu on Bellinda’s basic ass, plus I feel Olivia is kind of a dragon with all the people she’s been burning so they have a lot in common!
Tumblr media
We dazzle Dragonfu with a coin trick! True magic at work.
-OMG IT WAS BEHIND MY EAR THE WHOLE TIME -I KNOW!
Tumblr media
Good God, all of Olivia’s ‘happy’ expressions are terrifying, just don’t smile ever again, you’re too evil for it, you’re gonna scare the dragon away!
Tumblr media
Or not!!!!
Tumblr media
 AWWWWW 🐲❤️🔮
Tumblr media
You know what, fuck it, let’s lock it down, when it’s right it’s right!
-Burn stuff with me forever?? -I WILL!!!!
Tumblr media
-We are gathered here today, under threat of fiery death, to join two unholy abominations in holy matrimony. Yes, the irony is not lost on me.
AW CONGRATS GUYS <3333 The wizard tower is so small and family un-friendly and Olivia is so unmaternal but come on, like I’m not gonna have her reproduce with a fucking dragon.
Tumblr media
Back to Spainot, we’ve hit a slight bump, mainly that this Snordwich lord is proving fucking impossible to torture.
-Um.. Are you enjoying this??? -Sure am, bad boy, but why don’t we take this somewhere more private already?
Wtf, stop sexually harassing the innocent person who’s torturing you! Does no one around here have any sense of humanity anymore??
Tumblr media
-Come on, Spainot, throw some flesh-eating rodents at him! -I’M BUILDING UP TO IT, RAE, GAWD. No one likes a back-seat torturer!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-HA, who’s the loser now, Rodolfo? Rodolfo?? RODOLFO
Ya Spai I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m pretty sure he left while you were interrogating, I haven’t seen him in like 3 days.
-WHAT. So Olivia completes one achievement and gets a dragon wife and a magic skeletal bird and I complete three and get dumped?!
Well what do you want from me, I don’t make the rules!
-YES YOU DO
Can we move on, please? And Olivia had a very rough go of it-
Tumblr media
-she got burned in some rando quest and looked positively karma-stricken after, inferno-ing left and right while sporting this look! She deserves a magic bird!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Congrats on your success and 4 kids, Olivia!
-I love this skeleton bird more than I thought it possible to ever love something.
-Gee, thanks mom.
Tumblr media
We had leftover bones so here, Spainot, you get a magic bird too.
-A bone parrot is little comfort when you’ve lost the only bone that matters! Why Rodolfo, whyyyyy!!!!!!!!!
Oh I don’t know, probably because you challenged him to duels 3 times a day?
-No, that can’t be it.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but you look like a man who has nothing to live for?
-Yea, I certainly don’t.
So you wouldn’t mind like, jumping into the pit multiple times so you can get the parts we need for the hardest achievement in game aka Legendary Doomsword?
-Rodolfo had one of those too, it was legendary and now that it’s gone I’m doomed!!!
Ok ya ENOUGH metaphors about Rodolfo’s absent penis, although they really are writing themselves. We’ll get him back! If you survive all the pit jumping that is. Join us next time for part 2: Legendary Doomsword!

Captive Love Ch. 2
Prince! Yoongi x Maid! Reader
Tumblr media
Here is chapter 2! This chapter will focus on Y/N’s first day of work…and maybe a little bit of a cliffhanger.
Warnings for this chapter: Swearing, violence, description of past deaths, mentions of smut
Prev | Next
“Rise and shine girls!” Lilith shouts through the halls of the servants’ quarters, her meaty fists pounding on each of the girl’s doors. Y/N swears she can feel her room shake every time that woman’s fist comes in contact with a door. “You all have 10 minutes to get dressed and come down to eat!” Lilith calls, her heels clacking away. Y/N raises her arms up to stretch. She looks out of her small window to see a garden with a path that leads to a small set of doors going into the back of the castle. She turns to her cupboard and takes out her servant’s outfit. She takes off her dress that she wore yesterday, neatly folded it like her mother taught her to, and placed it in the cupboard. She took a look at the outfit laid out on the bed. It was not elegant in the slightest, but it was sure prettier than any outfit she had worn in her life. It was a pretty beige with ¾ sleeves that were flexible enough to move the arms comfortably to perform the needed tasks. The skirt was neatly fitted on the waist and ran to the ankles. It was not puffy at all and had a comfortable feel to it. And to top it all off, pretty little white lace ruffles were added to the ends of the sleeves and around the top opening to give it some style, which Y/N really appreciated. When she got the dress on, Y/N took a look at herself in the small mirror hanging on her wall above her tiny sink. She spotted some dirt on her cheeks, probably from the wagon, so she splashed her face with water, rubbing at her skin. After her facewash, she noticed how messy her hair had gotten. She ran her fingers through the h/c locks and tied the hair in the front to the back, creating a half up-half down style. She made her way to her door, slipping on her shoes and head down the hall to the servants dining hall.
When she arrived, she found a seat at a table where some of the girls she arrived with yesterday were sitting at. They were not talking to each other as much as the other servants were, probably because they were new or nervous. Y/N sat down next to a young girl with dark brown hair. Once she sat down, an older woman brought her a tray with a piece of bread, some water and a small bowl of what looked like to be chicken broth. Y/N turned to the girl and offered a small smile, “Hi, I’m Y/N. We came together on the wagon yesterday. Sorry for not introducing myself earlier.” The girl’s hazel eyes met hers and she gave Y/N a small smile, “It’s okay. I’m Emily. I don’t really talk when I’m nervous. I have a lot of anxiety when I feel pressured.” She said in a quiet tone. “I get it. I am totally nervous. I mean, yesterday I was living my normal life and now suddenly, I’m a servant to the royal family. The people who I thought of as family, gave me away for money without a second thought.” Y/N said taking a bite of her bread and immediately chasing it down with some water. Emily frowned, “I’m sorry to hear that.” “So,” Y/N said after eating a spoonful of the bland broth, “How did you get here?” Emily looked down at her food and played with it with her spoon, “I’m actually a twin. My sister and I are daughters of bakers. My mom and dad worked so hard their entire life, baking for the royal family. My sister was a big help in the kitchen. She is so smart, kind, outgoing and beautiful. She is pretty much everything I am not. I would usually mess up tasks that would get me in trouble, but she would always defend me. My parents loved me, don’t get me wrong, they were just worried about me a lot. I wasn’t let out a lot. I could have been an embarrassment to them. Then, my sister met a man who came from a good family. They fell in love and are to be married. However, the guards came before the wedding and were trying to get my parents to give them my sister for a large sum of money. So that’s when I volunteered myself to go in her place. I didn’t want her to leave everything behind and to ruin her chance of a happily ever after, so I went in her place.” Y/N looked at the girl with awe, “You are such a good and brave sister to go in her place. I’m sure she is very thankful for you. I don’t think you are an embarrassment. Just stick with me and we will get through this together!” Emily smiles at her and nods in agreement. Before anything else could be said, Lilith’s voice was booming throughout the room, “Mealtime is over! Everyone sit down a listen. Tomorrow is the Grand Royal Gala so we will need to clean the castle extra today. Royal families from all over the country will be attending so I want that castle spotless. Here are the groups and their tasks for the day. Rosetta, you and your hall will clean the floors and windows of the ball room. Claire, take your girls and polish all of the utensils and dishware. Isabel, you and your hall are in charge of cleaning the dinning hall. I want that space especially clean.”
While scrubbing away the dirt on the floor of the halls, Y/N reflected on what Elizabeth informed them about the royal family:
First off, the king. He has his own personal servants who clean, dress and cook for him, so it was highly unlikely for her to be involved with him. He is a strict ruler and likes for everything to be perfect. He does not interfere much with his sons’ lives, but he is more attentive to his two eldest sons. He wants to make sure they are both well-educated and fit enough to rule the kingdom when his time is up.
Same goes for the queen. She is a more carefree person than her husband. She enjoys balls and festivities. She interacts more with her sons than her spouse, but definitely more with her youngest sons, since the older ones are with the king or in counsel or military meetings. She clearly loves her family but is not the most observant or caring mother. She lets them do as they please.
Now, the eldest prince, Prince Seokjin. He is the next in line for the throne. Elizabeth said that he is very serious about his role in the family. With his brothers, he can be a fun person who will crack jokes and enjoy the company of others. But when wronged, he can be a completely different person. He once chopped off a chef’s fingers for making a soup too spicy for his liking and fed those fingers to his dogs. Since he will most likely become king in the near future, more galas will be held to find the prince a suitable wife. Overall, Y/N believes that she will not be in contact with the prince very often either.
The second eldest is Prince Yoongi, the second in line for the throne. According to Elizabeth, he rarely shows his face in public. He is extremely introverted. He keeps to himself, usually in his room where he will write poems, or he will be sleeping. Even with his introverted nature, he is somewhat of a genius. Elizabeth said that when he was a teenager, the king went to war with a foreign land and was at a disadvantage. It was Prince Yoongi, at age 16, that stepped in and completely remodeled the military tactics, which won them the war. However, like his brother, when wronged, he turns into a beast. One day, he was asleep in his room when a servant came in to clean. The servant did not notice the prince asleep and continued his task. It was not until he accidentally knocked the prince’s favorite ink off of his table and spilled it on the ground. The prince woke up in a rage. The man tried to apologize to the prince, only to have himself sent to the dungeons for a week with no food or water. On the last day, Prince Yoongi went down to see the servant, only to behead him himself.
When Elizabeth told them that story, Y/N felt deep chills run down her spine. Hopefully she won’t have to interact with Yoongi during her time at the castle.
From what she heard about the third and fourth oldest princes, Hoseok and Namjoon, they are not as hot tempered as the two eldest. Hoseok is a kind person with a bubbly personality, but when he is pushed the wrong way, he can be a force to be reckoned with. Namjoon on the other hand has not publicly displayed any hostile actions. He is extremely smart and a good leader. From what Elizabeth said, Namjoon is somewhat of a leader to all the brothers. He is very considerate of all of their opinions and is able to settle any arguments between the brothers. Y/N does not suspect to have any issues with those two princes.
Now the last three. Jimin and Taehyung, the fraternal twins who like to cause mischief in the palace. They seem to like to pick on the staff and belittle anyone who is of lower status then themselves. Out of the two of them, Taehyung is more sadistic. He will keep harassing staff members until they leave, hurt themselves or commit suicide. Jimin on the other hand, likes to make people, especially the women he has accompany him in his chambers, feel like they cannot survive without him. Whenever he has wronged one of his girls and they try to talk to him about it, he uses his charming attitude and well-chosen words to turn the whole conversation around onto the girls. He would make them feel like they were the ones who wronged him, and they would apologize to him and swear that they will do better.
Last but not least, the youngest prince, Jungkook. He had everything handed to him on a diamond plate. Elizabeth noted that his beauty almost rivals that of his oldest brother and Jungkook knows it. She said that he excels in anything he does. However, he is probably the scariest out of all the brothers. Jungkook can get away with anything…ANYTHING. Apparently, he was in love with a princess once and planned on marrying her. One day before he planned on proposing to her, he caught her having sex with one of his guards in the library. Furious, he went to his room and waited for her to return. When she did, he asked her where she was, and she lied to him saying that she went for a walk in the palace garden. Jungkook then called the guard she was with into his room and had two guards block the doors out of his room. He tied the princess to a chair, ignoring her cries trying to convince him that she would never cheat on him. He then ordered the guard to remove all of his clothing, leaving him nude. Jungkook had the guard put on prison cuffs himself while the prince hammered a hook into the wall. He beckoned the naked guard to lift his cuffed hands onto the hook. Once everything was in place, he slowly began to castrate the guard, relishing in the man’s screams of agony and the princesses’ shrill screams of horror. After he castrated him, Jungkook swiftly sliced the man’s neck, causing blood to spew out from the slash and him to choke on his own blood, all the while Jungkook forced the princess to watch. Once the man’s body stopped twitching, he untied the frozen princess and took her to his balcony. The princess began apologizing to the prince promising that she will never be unfaithful to him ever again, swearing her loyalty to him and begging for his forgiveness. He gave her a warm smile and gave her a small kiss on the lips, telling her that she is forgiven. And Just as the princess began to relax, Jungkook shoved her over the balcony and watched her body fall to ground. When the prince’s parents found out, they sent word to the princesses’ father that she had run off with a man and that they cannot find them anywhere. The princesses’ father believed them and sent search parties all around the country, never to find out the truth about what happened to his daughter. It’s because of that incident that Jungkook ends the lives of those who betray him.
All of a sudden, she heard something being knocked over and water spilling. Then a sudden cry of pain. Worried that one of girls hurt themselves, Y/N immediately got up and ran down the hall towards the noise, ignoring Emily telling her not to involve herself.
Y/N could hear a males voice from down the hall, “You stupid whore!! Your spilled you water on my fucking new shoes!!”
Once she turned the corner to where she would find the girl, her eyes widened, and her heart stopped.
