November's Fossil of the Month: Deinogalerix (Deinogalerix spp.)
Family: Hedgehog Family (Erinaceidae)
Time Period: 10-5 Million Years Ago (Late Miocene)
Native to what is now the Gargano region of southeastern Italy (which, as a result of higher sea levels, was an isolated island at the time,) the members of the genus Deinogalerix were relatives of modern hedgehogs comparable in size to small dogs. Lacking defensive spines but possessing long legs and proportionally enormous jaws, it is believed that, in the absence of large carnivores on their home island, the ancestors of this genus' members developed into fast-moving carnivores that may have fed on smaller vertebrates in addition to the invertebrates that make up the bulk of their smaller relatives' diets. The evolutionary phenomenon by which small carnivores isolated on islands gradually become larger, known as insular gigantism, is fairly well documented (being seen in both modern animals such as the Komodo Dragon and numerous extinct species known from fossils found on islands or in areas that were once islands, including a species of eagle-owl sized barn owl, Tyto gigantea, which coexisted with Deinogalerix on what is now Gargano) and is thought to occur in response to a lack of established large predators compared to nearby mainlands. The assumption that Deinogalerix species developed to exploit a lack of competition from similarly-sized predators would also explain their eventual extinction; the Miocene period ended in a major ice age, and as an increase in ocean freezing caused sea levels to fall the island on which Deionogalerix developed would have become more easily accessible from the mainland, possibly allowing for other similarly-sized or larger predators to colonise the former island and outcompete its unique inhabitants - a theory supported by the fact that Tyto gigantea also seems to have gone extinct around this time.

The need to hunt for food is essential to survival.
Carnival masks are, in my opinion, related back to the earliest of times. Animals that are important to the culture he represents. When the addition of the African influence is added to the Carnival. A circle of belief based upom prehistoric understanding that underpin our fundamental nature as people. Now I believe that if we go further back to the Greeks we can find examples of big festivals and the same type of open air festivities associated with Carnival. When Roman began to accept Christianity the pagan festivals were modified to become a part of the Christian calendar. If we accept our common ancestry then it makes sense. Around mid February there used to be a Festival called Lupercalia. The links between the traditions in all parts of the world hold common elements. Yet from our knowledge of tribal people studied in times closer to ours it is possible to understand the links. Ibex, reindeer, bison, stag and horses. (It could of course be the interpretation of the academics who have influenced my studies with their own agendas.

What really fascinates me is that these links are embedded in our modern cultures through masquerade, carnival and other traditions such as Halloween and Day of the Dead celebrations. He stands, shaman like, surround by animals. 
Amazingly these European traditions, superstitions, and links to ancient practices, have passed into other cultures in South, Central and North America plus of course the Caribbean. The settlers changed the local festivals to embody Christian elements. An interesting picture can be seen. Many other carnival masks and masquerade mask traditions can be traced back far into medieval times. So that when today we view masquerade and Carnival it is possible to recognise the Mayan or Inca festivals on which they were based. So here is a first link. All this from looking at masks. Probably some people who participate in these festivals understand their true nature. The European conquerors took their traditions of festivals to the Americas.

The gods link all matters, stay in good standing with the gods and food will be available. These must have influenced the Greek way of life. It is generally accepted that our original ancestors came from Africa and spread gradually to take over the whole World. And maybe bitten off more than I can realistically substantiate.
 The need to hunt for food is essential to survival. Our present position is to use this understanding of our common ancestry to build a forward looking route to the future. Now if we accept the links between Egypt and Africa then the initial influences probably came from tribes further South. 🎼 01535 「バラが咲いた」。
一昔前の東京駅が映り "皆様、ちょっとご案内申し上げます。東京駅は ご覧の通り南口北口ふたつのドームが御座います。右のドームの中にステーションホテルがあることは ご存知な方もおられませう。左のドームの中、即ち北口の中に何がありますか ご存知でいらっしゃいますか?" といった感じの渥美清さん似の声なナレーションから始まります、とある車掌さんの日々を描いた 日本国有鉄道協力な東映列車映画 「喜劇 急行列車」 を観ています。瀬川昌治監督作品。17:00 東京発 佐世保・長崎行き "特急さくら " に乗り込んだ 渥美清さん似の車掌アオキ・ゴイチは "皆様、大変長らくお待たせ致しました。この列車は 17時発佐世保、長崎行き特別急行列車さくら号で御座います。尚、この列車には乗車券の他に特別急行券が必要で御座います" なんて感じで東京駅を離れます。よこはま、おだわら、おおさか、とくやま、もじ、鳥栖、神崎、佐賀、久保田、牛津、鹿島、太良、諫早、そして長崎へ。少しの休暇とロマンスを楽しんだあと、帰り道 (上り) は あっさりと端折られます。後半は 新幹線 (ひかり) や ブルートレイン (富士) がスクリーンいっぱいに映ったりして トレイン好きにはたまらないかもしれない この映画、わたし的には 左卜全さんが陸前階上駅の駅長さん役 (アオキの回想場面に登場) を、西村晃さんがお客さん役を (気仙沼線で機関士をされていたさう) それぞれ演じていたところが好かったです。

雪が降る中を赤い服を着た子が駆けていて、そんな男の子を追いかける男の子の姿が映るところから始まります、消えた男の子に関係する人々の苦悩を描いた 映画 「赤い雪 Red Snow」 を観ています。甲斐さやか監督作品。凍えてしまうやうな物語はさておき、眞島秀和さんが 男の子らのパパ役で (さらっと) 出演されていました。さけんでばかりいました。

長崎で三年とちょっと遊学しておりました 加山雄三さん似の青年が "小石川養生所" なる養生所を訪れるところから始まります、若い医師見習いの病み患った人々との出会いを (親分医師との心の触れ合いを交えながら) 描いた 東宝映画 「赤ひげ」 を NFCで観た以来、久しぶりに観ています。黒澤明監督作品。幕府の御番医になる為に長崎へ遊学し蘭学を学んでいた (江戸へ帰れば御目見医に席が与えられるはずでした)、町医者の息子ヤスモトは、本名は舌を噛みさうな名前を持つ男、周りからは "赤ひげ" と呼ばれております ドクターN の元で見習いとしてはたらくことと相成ってしまい、実家から荷物もドサッと届くとのことで、ギャフンッて感じで、映画が始まって早々 とっととその場を後にしないと出世の道が閉ざされるぅぅって思って焦りを感じているのですけれど、町奉行 (北町奉行所) から正式に辞令が下りているからと 既に身動きが取れない状態になっていることを知り、映画が面白くなる前に サッサと逃げ出さうと 駆け足でその場を後にしやうとしたところ、ふと目に止まった 鍵のかかった戸口で悶える娘さんを見かけて この映画を面白くさせます。そんな美人さんな 3人殺しの "カマキリ娘" と呼ばれていたりする娘に簪でころされかけてから ヤスモトのジンセーが段々と変わり始めていく この映画、赤ひげ先生の 「この病気に限らず、あらゆる病気に対して 治療法などない」 や 「しかし問題はもっと前にある。病気と無知さえ何とかできれば 病気の大半は起こらずに済むんだ、いや、病気の陰には いつも人間の恐ろしい不幸が隠れている」 ということばに今を思います。

Descripción: De riguroso perfil a la izquierda, con el pelo recogido y un pendiente de arete en la oreja. La reciente limpieza ha permitido levantar todos los repintes antiguos que modifican un tanto la imagen y podían hacer pensar que se tratase de un fragmento de composición mayor. Liberada de ellos, se advierte que es un prodigioso apunte del natural, de una extraordinaria frescura, quizá concebido como estudio a conservar en el taller y utilizar cuando llegase la ocasión en composiciones mayores. Atribuido a Velázquez de antiguo, se creyó retrato de su mujer, Juana Pacheco, y como tal se exhibió en varias ocasiones a principios del siglo XX [...]

Clasificación Razonada: La reciente limpieza ha permitido levantar todos los repintes antiguos que modifican un tanto la imagen y podían hacer pensar que se tratase de un fragmento de composición mayor. Liberada de ellos, se advierte que es un prodigioso apunte del natural, de una extraordinaria frescura, quizá concebido como estudio a conservar en el taller y utilizar cuando llegase la ocasión en composiciones mayores. Atribuido a Velázquez de antiguo, se creyó retrato de su mujer, Juana Pacheco, y como tal se exhibió en varias ocasiones a principios del siglo XX. Una vez limpia, persisten las dudas respecto a su autor. Su soberbia calidad, la frescura y espontaneidad de su técnica y el efecto de fuerte contraste de la cabeza iluminada con el fondo oscuro, la acercan desde luego al estilo juvenil del maestro, pero la gama de color de las carnaciones, de tonalidad clara, contrastan bastante con las gamas tostadas que solía usar Velázquez en su etapa sevillana. Si fuese suya, habría que situarla ya en Madrid, cuando los tonos grises invaden su paleta. No es posible, por ahora y por mi parte, lanzar otra atribución convincente.
En el catálogo de la exposición dedicada a Pacheco (2016), se comenta "...el uso por parte de Pacheco y Velázquez de modelos comunes realizados a partir de calcos que replican figuras ya utilizadas anteriormente, como puede observarse en las similitudes señaladas entre el rostro de la Santa Justa de esta pareja y la Inmaculada de Velázquez [...], así como en el perfil de la Santa Rufina de Pacheco y el de la Cabeza de muchacha de la Fundación Lázaro Galdiano. Esta posible vinculación familiar entre Juana Pacheco representada como Santa Justa, extensible a la Santa Rufina por su parecido a la modelo del cuadro de la FLG, prueba la utilización de modelos cercamos por ambos artistas.
