yoo joonghyuk sits on a roof of a dilapidated building somewhere in what used to be downtown seoul. he’s on watch for the night, on guard against any potential threat, human or monster or supernatural creature, trying to break into the building where the rest of the party is resting. instead of looking down and keeping an eye on all the entrances, he looks up at the ink black sky. it’s dark, moon nowhere in sight, but stars still wink in and out, warning reminding him of the constellations watching him even when the rest of the city is dead quiet.

sometimes, he wishes it could all stop. just for a minute. just for a second. he doesn’t wish for the scenarios to be over, or for the dokkaebi to stop appearing, or for the regressions to cease. he doesn’t want anything to come to an end, per se, because he’s wise enough to know wishing for something like that will only lead to disappointment. he’s not stupid enough to wish for the before, either. he just wishes it could all stop, just for a minute, just for a second.

yoo joonghyuk flexes his shoulders slightly, ready to rise and change watch shifts. there’s a tiredness to his muscles that isn’t physical and can’t be cured as such, but he ignores it, thinking instead of the appeal of the slightly warmer interior of the building. he pushes open the roof door and begins climbing down the stairs, even as he thinks of how he wouldn’t mind staying up there, stargazing. the stars are different from before, but he could pretend, just for a minute, just for a second.

instead, he continues down the stairs. as he reaches the second floor, he’s greeted with the sight of the rest of the party in various states of slumber. second floor, because the first floor is vulnerable, the first place to be attacked. he wishes he could turn off his brain, just for a minute, just for a second.

han sooyoung is curled up in fetal position, burrowing inside her napsack. lee hyunsung is lying flat on top of his, hand resting over his shield. lee jihye is leaning against a nearby wall, head lolling to rest on top of her sword hilt as she snores. yoo sangah and jung heewon are back to back, supporting each other even while sleeping. lee gilyoung and shin yoosung are in a similar position but facing each other, hands clutching each other’s for warmth. kim dokja is also inside his sleeping bag, lying on his side. he grips his phone in his hand, screen dimmed but not completely off. he must have been reading who knows what again on it before drifting off.

kim dokja has the next watch shift, so yoo joonghyuk goes to shake him awake. he bends down to do so, but hesitates before he can touch kim dokja’s shoulder. instead, he gently pries the phone from his hand and turns it off, setting it off to the side. his eyes catch on kim dokja’s fingers, slim and uncalloused. yoo joonghyuk isn’t too surprised; he’s is a terrible fighter, and even worse swordsman. his gaze traces from kim dokja’s hands to his face, where his bangs flutter every time he breaths out, where the dark circles beneath his eyes are more prominent than from afar, where his eyebrows are screwed together ever so slightly. it’s as if kim dokja is still thinking of plans and schemes and how to outwit other competitors and the constellations watching them, even when he sleeps.

yoo joonghyuk unconsciously extends his hand, wanting to smooth out the furrow in his brow. just for a minute, just for a second—

he retracts his hand, clenching his fist hard enough to feel his fingernails digging into his palm. he thinks maybe he isn’t as wise as he thought.

One of my favorite ORV headcanons is that TWSA has as much practical living advice as it does the metaphorical.

There's a 3-page long description of lsh dressing and bandaging yjh's wounds in the early rounds, intimately describing all the bruises and cuts and scrapes and the way they were handled. Kdj saw this as a humanizing moment for yjh and shipping fuel, but the next day he gets beat up by bullies and decided to dress his wounds himself since the school nurse isn't around (and they were getting tired of him anyway). It's sloppy and he had to rebandage himself after it unravelled, but it prevented an infection, and he got better over time.

In another chapter, yjh notices ljh having panic attacks in the middle of battle and teaches her a few tricks to steady your breathing and center herself faster as part of combat training. The description feels like text you'd see in a training handbook and completely breaks any sense of pacing. Kdj remembers it the next time he has one and was able to calm himself down before his relatives find him and punish him like they did before.

There was a chapter that came out around the time kdj was job hunting, where the party gets tangled in a subscenario involving securing a position through interviews. It felt contrived even with kdj's tolerance to TWSA shenanigans, but he takes note of what everyone does anyway and tries some of them in his job interviews. He comments that some of the actions felt unrealistic with his own experiences in job interviews; tls123 replied with a lighthearted apology (she's never had to bother with interviews, and she doubts she'll ever get to; she's grateful that it was still useful.)

In yet another chapter, yjh avoids the eyes of fellow incarnations and picks his words correctly in a game of three questions with nosy constellations. They were oddly dry and mundane for an apocalypse setting with superhuman powers. Kdj remembers them the next time he spots paparazzi lurking around the corners.

A chapter has yjh instructing knw, ljh and yma on how to make do with instant ramyun and add a few things to it to keep it somewhat nutritious (yjh isn't happy about it but it's the least he can do since they're gonna split for a multi-day scenario and he can't cook for them). Kdj remembers it when he tried to make ramyun for the first time in his new place after moving out of his relatives'. He remembers curling his hand to chop the scallions because knw got scolded for improper knife handling, and he remembers when to put in the egg because ljh got sternly corrected for confidently shouting out the wrong answer. Kdj didn't injure himself, and it was the fanciest and most delicious meal he ate in a while. (He remembers yjh patting his sister's head for getting everything right, and almost brings his own hands to his head before stopping; no one's gonna praise a college student for making ramyun right.)

they're so. they have a supernatural magical bond called the Nahel bond that literally links their souls. syl's life depends on kaladin's honor and kaladin's life rests on syl's support (bbg is So Fucked Up <3). they're constant companions and support each other through both of their grief and struggles (since they both have been through some Fucked Up Shit). they've defied literal gods (at least, the closest thing to one they had at the time) to stay together. and never at any point is their bond treated as anything other than deeply platonic and deeply valuable to both of them.

sash — Today at 7:55 PM okay. a little bit late but i've been giving it some thought.

i think the biggest Thing in orv in terms of philosophy is poststructuralism, and you're def going to find ideas by roland barthes in it (e.g. the classic "death of the author", or the idea of cultural phenomena as modern myths from "mythologies"). like, orv deals a lot with escaping clear categorizations and rejecting binaries + meaning of a text being generated from a network of related stories, rather than being intrinsic to one specific work. and those things are arguably the key characteristics of poststructuralism (though take this with a massive grain of salt bc it's notoriously difficult to define due to its very nature). i actually had an essay about this in the works but don't ask me when i'll finish it, it's currently languishing half-written in my google drive.

that aside sing shong namedrop quite a lot of literary works/philosophers. off the top of my head:

anna croft's zarathustra --> nietzsche's "thus spoke zarathustra" (i've seen a reddit essay that delves into this one in particular) theater dungeon endboss --> "simulacra and simulation" by jean baudrillard lsk's faction called "nouvelle vague" --> french art film movement from the 50s aileen makerfield's "etika clock store" --> POSSIBLY a reference to spinoza's "ethica" but do not take my word for this, it's just a wild guess fourth wall --> bertolt brecht's verfremdungseffekt hsy's --> "the neverending story" by michael ende outer gods/hounds of tindalos --> h.p. lovecraft (particularly sp --> nyarlathotep)

ofc there's also ysa's haruki murakami, han kang and raymond carver thing which. maybe that's a coincidence or just meant to highlight ysa's highbrow tastes but it's…. Something. in the epilogue, judith butler, roland barthes (or at least "mourning diary") and pierre bourdieu are mentioned by name as well. [8:00 PM] so like. there's A Lot. orv is juggling a million references at all times, some of which are super obvious (like journey to the west, wizard of oz or the book of revelations) and others are ??? who knows. they even like to draw connections to their other webnovels which is becoming even more relevant in the side stories.

sash — Today at 8:05 PM i have seen someone on postype talk about daniel dennett, walter benjamin and rené girard in relation to orv as well but i don't know much about them so i'm unsure if it's a case of sing shong planting explicit references that i have missed, or if op was simply doing "normal" analysis. point is that 1) sing shong love their french philosophers 2) if you want, you can find Anything in orv. there is a sheer endless amount of stuff to pick apart.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (9/10)

This book has been hyped up to the moon and back, so I was a little nervous going in, but I really enjoyed it! This book was packed to the brim with action, and I loved the romance. It is fundamentally a fantasy romance with the romance taking precedence over logic occasionally, but it was just so enjoyable to read. There's always something going on, I absolutely loved the worldbuilding, and the dragons, both their magic and personalities, were engaging and likable. Also, Yarros does a great job foreshadowing twists without over-compensating, which is an issue I run into frequently. I refrained from giving this book a 10/10 for two reasons. First, it is pretty cliche, and second, while I liked Violet and her skills, her personality is kind of cookie-cutter for NA romantasy protagonists.

Blood Bonds by J. Bree (8/10)

I pushed through this one last night so I could include it in the post. I will say that I hit a block with this one. It starts out with a ton of action and then it just kind of stalls in the middle. Oleander expresses frustration about being protected and doing nothing, and I was right there with her. Honestly, a lot of the action is starting to feel recycled in this book; the Resistance has like one plan of attack. The huge upside is Oleander's bonds. We're finally getting to properly know them, and North in particular has a miraculous redemption arc. As of right now, my favorites of them are Gryphon and Atlas. The reason this book is an 8 instead of a 7 is an absolutely crazy, jaw-dropping, insane plot twist at the end.

Into the Wild by Erin Hunter (8/10)

I am rereading the Warriors series with some of my friends, so this is the beginning of a hefty endeavor, especially considering how much more has been published since I last read it. While I remember some crazy stuff from this series, the first book is pretty standard. Honestly, you could probably transplant this plot into a high fantasy and nothing would be amiss. I do appreciate that even with a name like ShadowClan and their constant antagonism towards ThunderClan, the Erins did not decide to just straight make an entire Clan evil and instead create a corrupt ruler instead. As someone who has read the books before and is now like twice the target age, everything's very predictable, but I can definitely see some twists taking a fourth grader by surprise.

Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger (9/10)

Another reread, I'm starting from the beginning of KotLC because I don't remember much. I find the plot to this book super engaging, especially for middle grade, and it does a great job setting up a conflict that will last for over nine installments. The pacing is great, keeping the major reveals for later without stalling in the middle, and there's a ton of fun worldbuilding. Sophie is, obviously, ridiculously overpowered, but that presents a ton of obstacles by itself, and I find it incredibly interesting that she has to deal with her own existence not fully being her own, a complex concept for middle grade. I will say that, while not unexpected, the weird focus on romance was a little grating at times. Connected to that, I'm sorry, but I just don't like Dex. I can tolerate him, but I think the breaking point is when Sophie tells him some really devastating news for her and he just focuses on what it means for him.

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint Vol. 1 by Sing Shong (CR, 83%)

I've finally started reading ORV again! I hit a wall a couple of months back, but I've got the motivation again. I feel like taking this book at face value kind of leaves a lot of questions; it seems like a ton of plot development and worldbuilding with little if any attention to character. However, Kim Dokja is a very unreliable narrator in my opinion, and what he chooses to focus on is very telling. The conflict between his separation from the other characters, which is one of his main skills, and the natural human connection that blooms from these sorts of situations is so interesting. Also, I think I'm at a place where everything starts to pick up a little.

The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White (CR, 13%)

I just got an ARC of this one, and it's very good so far. Silas is a very interesting main character, and his reactions to be forced to suppress natural parts of himself, specifically his autism and gender, are visceral. While I'm a little squeamish, the medical content is well-written, and so far I'm picking up on some very complex family relationships. I'm looking forward to continuing!

Fire and Ice by Erin Hunter (CR, 2%)

Second book in the Warriors series, and I've barely started. I'll likely end up finishing it later this week!

[10:58 PM]at no point have i ever felt that orv lost sight of the focus on human psychology or get bogged down with debates about redemption and whether someone "deserved" the fate they received (which is a very christianity-heavy subject might i add), but whether or not the person/character in the scenario has chosen to help them or abandon them completely

[11:04 PM]and the thing with dokja is that hes not your typical "yeah ill help you out of the good of my heart and bc im a nice person! ill always do that for any person in need no matter who it may be!"

[11:11 PM]huiwon is this lady who he saved from poisonous gas and later becomes one of his companions/friends, and he was like "do you want to be companions?" she was all "what? did you not consider me one this entire time?" and he was all "no, i actually have. i was just thinking that you might not have reciprocated the sentiment"

[11:16 PM]he wont leave behind someone who needs his help, but when someone clearly doesnt want to be his friend or just wants to manipulate him hes like "yeah ok bye" and later they get cursed by their own hubris, or not, he dont care, thats none of his business hes just a background character after all /j

well there is one exception which is junghyeok but that guy is literally THE main character of the story within orv, dokja knows literally every single little detail about this guy and he cant afford to have the dude die prematurely bc the plot isnt going his way in his current life/groundhogs day scenario

[11:28 PM]but also junghyeok is very quick to murder people he doesnt trust which is Not Ideal when dokja, once again, knows every detail of every one of his lives, past present and future

[11:35 PM]its so interesting and i keep having to hold myself back from saying that its not a typical trait for dokja, or even a main protagonist to have bc hes literally stated multiple times that hes not the main character, hes a reader, a background character, Just Some Guy, hes not confined to whats typical of his genre at all bc he was never supposed to fill that role in the first place which makes his whole existence a paradox within the narrative since yknow, from our perspective he is the main protagonist while junghyeok is a side character

[11:39 PM]and i think thats where having one of his skills, being able to break the fourth wall within his own world, is such an integral part of his whole thing, i actually thought that he was breaking the fourth wall in our world, but no hes breaking the fourth wall in his world

kim dokja has held onto this trump card for ages.

he’s known for planning tens, hundreds of steps ahead, and coming up with brilliant solutions on the spot when even those contingencies fall through, so he’s never had use this particular move.

until now.

now, he’s gone through hundreds of simulations, dug through the deep recesses of his memory and read and reread his copy of ways of survival to see if there was a solution to this whole mess. there wasn’t. nothing would fix this, except for it.

there’s also another reason why kim dokja hasn’t use it beforehand. it was when it was first given to him, when dionysus came down to speak with him in person, when he warned kim dokja of the consequences, when he spoke in a grave voice of what it would do — how it would rip his incarnation body to shreds and scatter his soul to the four winds, how no regeneration stigma or resurrection skill would bring him back, how it would tear his very mind apart to never be pieced back together again.

it was when it was first given to him, when dionysus told him he hoped kim dokja would never have to use it, but if he ever did, left the parting words: “you can’t unring a bell, so be certain when you call.”

but kim dokja knows there is no other way. there is no scenario where the entire party survives this, and it’s either they lose him or everyone dies, and he knows which one he would choose in a heartbeat.

even when han sooyoung screams at him to stop, and when lee hyunsung reaches futilely for him, and jung heewon’s face crumples, and yoo joonghyuk breaks into a dead sprint towards him, he knows he made the right choice.

despite seeing the tears in their eyes, he doesn’t hesitate.

kim dokja smiles one last time at each of them, reaches for it, and calls down the gods.

Ok but the thing that's really funny about Kim Dokja is that he's a massive hypocrite and whenever someone else tries to pull the bs of trying to sacrifice themselves for him instead of the other way around he gets annoyed and is like well shit now I have to fix their mistake so that they can live and have a happy life or whatever :///.

Like (spoilers) with his mom and then Yoo Jonghyuk those couple times and also that time with the breaking sky sword saint.

But then you can see how his hippocrisy inherently influences the rest of his group to try and have his mindset as well where they value their lives less because his saving their life influences them to care more about others and it's sort of like this cyclical trauma that you can see the roots of in that it's something that he learned from his mother in the same way when he was younger.

 So Hyunsung doesn't reach out. He waits, instead, arms loose at his sides, until Dokja just casually bumps against him. Hyunsung blushes at the deliberately careless touch of Dokja's fingers on his shoulder, the way he murmurs an apology so lightly and makes to go, but his hand can't help but linger. 

 He 'accidentally' sticks out his leg, and Dokja 'accidentally' trips, and Hyunsung folds him into a hug tight enough to creak his bones. 

 "Hey," Dokja says, laughing, "you'll crush me. I thought you liked me, Lee Hyunsung." 

 "I won't crush you," says Hyunsung. He rests his chin on top of Dokja's head, lets Dokja relax into his hold and cling to him in turn. "And I do." Dokja turns his head, listening. Hyunsung smiles. "I'm not good at anything else besides liking you."

i think what a lot of people fail to realize about kim dokja is that he isn't Oblivious. he's Traumatized.

he doesn't fail to pick up on things. he's really good at it actually. he hyperanalyzes. overthinks. and when the things he picks up on indicate anything about himself or how others feel about him him? when the things he picks up reflect on any sort of serious emotions? his knee jerk trauma response is to Bury it, Avoid it, Cover it, Scatter it, Chuck it as far away from himself as possible.

he's not dense. he's scared.
