There are 10 spells that can be figured out by the player themselves, while the rest must be earned by befriending the fairies of Pixie Hollow.

In order to get a fairy's spell, you'll have to increase their friendship meter. After the meter is maxed (or very close to max), there's a chance that completing an errand for them will reward you with a spell.

These spells can only be used once, whereas the 10 self discoverable spells can be used indefinitely but only give a single item as a reward.

Geraldine Julienne’s main role in the villains’ master seems limited to outing volunteer headquarters to the general public. It’s possible she leaked some other intel on the organization’s traditions but her knowledge of what V.F.D. does seems incredibly superficial. I doubt  she even knows that it’s called V.F.D. for that matter, she just knows that there exists a secret society which does… secret things?

From the looks of it, Geraldine hasn’t done much ever since Lemony left the country. Esme contacted her just before she married Jerome, which would put their first interaction some time after “The Bad Beginning” at the earliest. That’s at least fifteen years Geraldine has spent doing little but writing what she herself calls a “boring old column” whose content is largely invented. So I would say Geraldine was a minor pawn that the fire-starting side mostly forgot about until Esme involved her in her plans to marry Jerome.

Someday, I hope to uncover a major story — maybe a murder — but in the meantime, I just write a boring old column called “Secret Organizations You Should Know About”. Sometimes, in order to make the column more exciting, I write rumors or things I make up, instead of facts.[Lemony Snicket’s un-Authorized Autobiography, p.42]

The video above is “The History of Race and Racialization” (Oxford Academic/ Oxford University Press, by Carlos A. Hoyt, Jr) In this video it is explained how racialization came to be. Dr. Hoyt explains that race primarily comes from two things: firstly, the general cognitive confusion that is quite common in our brains, and secondly, the not so positive way we follow this confusion. Our brains are wired to split things into sections, groupings, and categories. One example of this is the experiment that he showed the viewers of the video. An experiment where there are three small containers, two white, and one brown. When asked, most people assume that the two with the most similarities were the two white ones, when in reality, the white sugar was much closer to the brown sugar than the salt. We take markers and give them a meaning that simply isn’t there.

This video is called “Immigration and the Rise of Nativism” (NBC News Learn) explains how nativism came to be in our country and delves into its various roots. Nativism comes from fear, and intolerance. Intolerance of things such as other religions, such as Catholicism, and Judaism, entering the country, and fear that immigrants would bring crime and poverty, and that they would steal their jobs as well. The video also shows that as irrational as these ideas are, they still gained a lot of power in the U.S..

Both of these images I found on Instagram while looking under the hashtag #microaggressions. The first is a young woman holding a sign that has the words “racial microaggressions” crossed out in red, and looking uncomfortable. Surrounding her are a number of word bubbles, all containing demeaning statements, such as “Where are you from? No, where are you really really from?” and “What are you?”

The next image contains the heads of several minorities, all giving responses to what we can assume are several comments like in the picture above, and all more respectful than I think I would be in the circumstance.

Hypodescent:

Hypodescent, also known as the “one-drop rule” has been a part of the U.S. for the majority of our country’s history. It has been an official law since 1662, and has been upheld in court as recently as 1985, when a woman from Louisiana was not allowed to identify as “white” on her passport because one of her great-great-great-great grandmother was black. This article,  “The ‘One-Drop Rule’ Persists” by Steve Bradt from the Harvard Gazette, states that despite the fact that many believe that the election of Barack Obama to be a sign of progress in this field, James Sidanius, a professor of psychology and African and African-American studies at Harvard states that “Hypodescent against blacks remains a relatively powerful force within American society.”

In addition, the article also mentions that according do a study that he conducted, with help from others, that unconsciously, people considered children who are 1/4 asian and 3/4 white were more white than children who are 1/4 black and 3/4 white.

This link leads to a diagram within an article which shows how best to counteract the biased medical institutions and improve the health and safety of prenatal infants and try to reduce ethic and racial inequalities of patients.

This video is about Black Panther and how it relates to racial ideology. I found this on Dr. Kira Banks YouTube Channel “Raising Equity.” She opened the video by explaining the definition of racial ideology, which she defined as how one believes black people should interact with society. She then shared how that broad definition can be broken down into four types of ideology:

Assimilation ideology: this one is the belief that black people should “get along” with mainstream society.

Humanist ideology: everybody is human and we should ignore race.

Oppressed minority ideology: minorities and oppressed groups should interact and get along with each other.

Nationalist ideology: minorities should build and live in their own institutions.

Along with all of these she says that no person is one or the other, rather a mix. She also identifies the two main characters of the movie, T’Challa and Killmonger, both as having primarily nationalist ideologies, though both having a different connection to the term. T’Challa’s relationship with the term is all about protecting his country and helping it flourish, while Killmonger is unable to achieve his desire for a society like Wakanda’s due to his struggles with white supremacy. At the end of the film, Dr. Banks says that she feels compelled to choose between two ideologies, one of sharing Wakanda’s success with the World, or keeping and protecting the success from others.

🐾;; Hello everyone. I do have to apologize for not being around for a while. Work is getting more hectic by the minute. Dead-line is coming up and it will require that I work... work... and work.

It’s finally calming down now, so I will be able to get back on some of my blogs now. I probably won’t be on fully as I want to be, but I will try and check in to answer asks and what not.

Blue House, Amazon Packages, Old friends

I can’t sleep. Actually, that’s not exactly true… I refuse to sleep. My anxiety has been crippling, exhausting, and just plain maddening. It’s 0213 and I’m surrounded by my overactive thoughts, cats (Mr. Butters & Mila), and this crushing weight that has been on my chest for the last two days. When I’m laying down I can’t focus on anything other than that persistent heaviness. It’s suffocating me and really fucking with my spiritual journey advances. I can’t, I can’t, I can’t seem to be the words of the wee hours of the night. My waking self, sleep self, floating self all have one thing in common right now. They’re all a fucking stress ball. The anxiety and depression cloud are really pouring down tonight. We’re all afraid to close our eyes. My sleep self refuses to let my waking self turn over for the night. My floating self is just waiting for one of us to make a damn decision. I’m just along for the ride, and after tossing and turning for the last few hours I decided for all of us that a bowl of Frosted Flakes was a great first step into avoiding the terrorizing night terrors. My mind is so exhausted that it seems to be past the point of no return. I’ll have to try sleeping during the day when JP’s awake so I can feel safe. He can’t save me if he’s catching zzz’s right? I mean last night I didn’t have an unpleasant experience meeting my sleep self. She took it easy on me… Instead of throwing me a fastball she set me up at the tee like you would a 5 year old. She was nice enough to set up the t-ball stand and even make sure my stance was acceptable. She encouraged me to liven up a little, except I wasn’t eager to play this game with her. I just wanted to disappear into a cozy slumber. I never get what I want it seems when it comes to her. She threw me a nice easy ball, and here we go… 

As a child and even into my adult years most of my night terrors have taken place in the old blue house I used to live in. I loved that house though. We lived behind a cemetery which was quite peaceful. Anyways, the night terrors all start in the basement of the house and I’m trying to escape through the top floor window in every terror. This one didn’t start off that way. Let’s Set the scene shall we… Action!  

We’re all hanging out in my Aunts old room. Chilling and listening to music on the old shaggy 90s carpet.  JP and I are cuddled up, embracing each other and leaning against the bed. We’re listening to something Pumba is going on about. Just vibing to whatever music is playing on the old stereo in the background. I’m expecting a package today. It’s supposed to be a pair of leggings I’ve been waiting on. While the scene is set to be calm and easy going I can’t help but fret about the doors being locked. I’m mentally going over it in my head and trying to remember if I locked them before we all headed upstairs to hang. My friend Kristen walks into the room next. Pumba seems surprised to see her. It’s been some time since they’ve been in the same room together. She is glowing with happiness. Going on about how the traffic impeded her from being here earlier. She comes over and gives me a hug and pulls me into the bathroom, “What’s going on in your head? You seem a little out of it.” I shrug it off and can’t seem to find the words to reply to her. All of a sudden we hear a loud banging on the front door. We poke our heads out of the bathroom. I feel my heart in my chest and panic overcomes me. Pumba gets up and stalks down the stairs. In whispered alarm I say, “No! No, don't open it. They’ll go away. Just stay away from the doors and the windows.” Kristen pats my shoulders to calm me down. Pumba turns to look at me at the top of the stairs, grinning, “Mae there’s nothing to be worried about. I think your packages are here.” Jean Paul looks up from where he’s sitting and shrugs with a small smile on his face. “Please, don’t open it.” I plead. I make my way down the stairs careful not to step on the third to last stair because I know it makes a creaking sound. As if the person outside could really hear it, but still I’m not taking any chances. Pumba was right, the packages were delivered… It seemed like so many of them. Some were empty hanging in the cherry blossom tree branches like they were hanging decorations. I unlocked the door quickly and nervously grabbed the packages and locked the door with haste. Triple checking that the screen door was locked and finally double locking the actual door. Everyone went back upstairs, and I just wanted to be sure we were all safe so I went to lock the door leading to the basement, next I padded off to the kitchen. I wanted to bring some snacks up with me so I started pulling some things out of the fridge. When all of a sudden I felt this overwhelming sense of angelic presence. I stopped what I was doing and turned to face the yellow metal door in the kitchen. The lock magically started to turn. I didn’t feel any fear at that moment. I couldn’t move or avert my eyes. I couldn’t close them. I couldn’t speak. The door opened slowly and all I could see was a bright warm light. It took my eyes some time to adjust and there she was. Ms. Millie standing directly in front of me making her way up the stairs. Her small frail body moving with such ease for a 90 something year old woman. As she walked I could feel the warm breeze and smell of those cherry blossoms follow her. She had this angelic glow about her. I felt tears start to flood my eyes. She stood before me and peered up at me with a bemused look. As if she was silently chuckling at an inside joke. Then she embraced me. I felt the warmth of her hug, her motherly love envelope me. “Ms. Millie? Oh my goodness? It’s been so long!” I said shakily with tears streaming down my face. “Hi my sweet child,” She said with a beautiful warm smile. She held me at arms length and asked, “Why are you so frightened? There’s nothing to fear.” I just stared at her with a shocked expression. I didn’t know what to say. Her warm eyes comforted me and I felt this sense of peace wash over me. (End Scene) 

I woke up yesterday morning at 0513. Wonder, gratefulness, and a joyful sadness all seemed to hit me at once. I haven’t thought of Ms. Millie in so long. I don’t even know if she’s still alive anymore… She always made me feel safe, seen, and loved as a child. It was lovely being able to see her again even in that short moment of dreamscape. She knew my heart and mind have been heavy for some time. She never seemed to worry about anything in her waking life. She always had a way of just peacefully existing. Nothing seemed to phase her or pierce her happiness or peace. As children we are all rowdy. She’d just let us be and calmly continue whatever task she was doing. I miss her dearly, what a treat to be able to reconnect with her again. I’ll have to call mama and papa to share this story. They’d be tickled. I’m feeling a bit lighter after sharing this story. Maybe I’ll try to just lie down for a bit. Listen to some music and wait for the sun to come up. Jean Paul has to be up in two hours to workout. I’ll have to try and sleep now with him beside me, because I’ll be afraid to sleep alone… Maybe I should listen to Ms. Mille. She’s right, there’s nothing to be frightened of. I can, I can, I can. I can do this. I can overcome this. These terrors don’t define me. They’re a part of me, but I’m safe and I can always rewrite the story if I so choose. Goodnight everyone… Until next time…

My my my, are you in for a treat! Stevie Wonder bringing THE FUNK to Sesame Street!

April 12, 1973, Season 4, Episode 0513. About to enter high school, I was supposed to have outgrown Sesame Street by now, but nobody should outgrow THIS: Stevie Wonder fully into the peak of his powers, leading a scorching jam on “Superstition”, the most blazing funk you may ever behold.

There’s so much to love about this video! One of the best live recordings I’ve ever heard (every instrument is crystal clear, a true feat for early 70s TV), a 19 year old Ray Parker (who’d write and perform the original Ghostbusters theme) on guitar, these two guys seriously bringing the horns, this kid on the balcony at :39 and again at 4:10 who’s dancing for us all, multiple shout-outs to Sesame Street along the way, and not one but TWO false endings ‘CAUSE STEVIE AIN’T FINISHED JAMMING YET.

The thing is, Sesame Street was more than a TV show to me. It inspired me. It shaped my career choices (I became a teacher, worked in the inner city in Baltimore and DC, and later made nature documentaries shaped by those amazing little animal shorts on the show), but more broadly, Sesame Street was a vision of the urban utopia I wanted to live in.

This was true for the performers in some ways, too. Sonia Manzano (”Maria”) joined the show in 1971, and when asked in 2015 about the single most standout moment in her 44 years on the show, this is the one she chose.

“The whole studio rocked out and it was great because, white people, black people, young people, old people — everybody was on the same page,“ she said.

“It was a moment of clarity. You know, we started this show, we thought we were going to end racism, we were going to close the education gap. ... We had big dreams! And moments like Stevie being on the show gave us a glimpse of the way things could be.”

So prepare to jam, yes, but also open yourself to the possibilities of this world of Wonder.
