Sunshine to the Heart

by Aiden Wilson Tozer
Where there is knowledge, it will pass away - 1 Corinthians 13:8
That God can be known by the soul in tender personal experience while remaining infinitely aloof from the curious eyes of reason constitutes a paradox best described as
"Darkness to the intellect But sunshine to the heart." - Frederick W. Faber
The author of the celebrated little work The Cloud of Unknowing develops this thesis throughout his book. In approaching God, he says, the seeker discovers that the divine Being dwells in obscurity, hidden behind a cloud of unknowing; nevertheless, he should not be discouraged but set his will with a naked intent unto God. This cloud is between the seeker and God so that he may never see God clearly by the light of understanding nor feel Him in the emotions. But by the mercy of God faith can break through into His Presence if the seeker but believe the Word and press on.

How to Love like JESUS P1,2,3,4 | Tim Mackie [1 Corinthians 13:1-13]
In this sermon, Tim Mackie shows us what it means to love like JESUS loved us, from 1 Corinthians 13.
In this sermon, Tim Mackie shows us what it means to love like JESUS loved us, from 1 Corinthians 13.
Here's what Paul means at least when he uses word love & it's anchored in the teachings of JESUS is that it refers not primarily as it does in in our culture to a feeling that happens to you.
There is feeling involved, as we'll see, but it primarily love refers to action or behavior. Love is something you do--so we've been here for three.
There's our third Sunday in here & on Resurrection Sunday, Easter we finished 1.5 year long journey in our teaching series--as we explore the Gospel of Matthew.
One of the earliest accounts of JESUS's life and what we focused on were his final words in that account about JESUS declaring as the resurrected MESSIAH of Israel--that HE's the KING of the universe.
The KING of Heaven & Earth, HE said what    HE commissioned HIS followers to do is to    go out & tell everybody & to call them to    join JESUS's new family & to become part    of it & then HE defined what that meant
So HE said:
[1] Joining the family of JESUS followers you come          in by getting baptized symbolic sacred symbol          of going into the water & we did it last Sunday
We baptised over a dozen people.
Awesome stories unbelievable. The stories of          what JESUS is doing to mess with people; here          in our Church Community it's outstanding--so          we celebrated that.
First JESUS talks about at end of Matthew then          the second thing--it's very simple HE says what          is it you're going to add?
All these Disciples & followers to the family of          MY people & as their KING, here's what it means          to follow everything I taught you to obey & in          JESUS's teachings in Matthew we focused on a          few themes & we just saw it everywhere.
What you would hear JESUS talking about on          any given day is Kingdom of GOD that GOD is          taking back HIS rule & reign of the world and          JESUS is here to bring it all together..
So what is the appropriate response to the          fact JESUS is KING of Heaven & Earth, here          it comes into what HE boiled down as the          basics of what it means to follow HIM:
[a] Conversation HE had about what's the          greatest of all of GOD's commands & HE          boiled down to the great command that          had two parts.
Do you remember it was 1st love GOD,          love people so the Kingdom of GOD is          here; JESUS is KING over Heaven & Earth
What should I do about that as HIS follower          here's my true north as a Disciple of JESUS
         [1] love GOD & [2] love people
Growing in my capacity to love others well          is order number one of a follower of JESUS          so we thought before we dive into another          Book of the Bible--which we're going to do          week after next.
We're going to jump into a few of months          exploring the Book of Daniel in the OT..          but before we do that we thought no let's          just take JESUS at HIS Word like HE wants          us to obey what HE taught us.
To love GOD & to love people, so we just          wanted to take a few weeks & just camp          out on what it means to truly follow King          JESUS & grow in our capacity to love.
We're being guided in our reflections on          what it means to love by one of the most          beautiful expositions of what love is for          Christians anywhere in the whole Bible.
It's in Paul's first letter to the Corinthians CH 13.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13 | ¹ If I speak in the tongues of men & of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal.
² If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries & all knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ³ If I give all I possess to the poor & exult in the surrender of my body, but have not love, I gain nothing. ⁴ Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
⁵ It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. ⁶ Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth.
⁷ It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. ⁸ Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it’ll be dismissed.
⁹ For we know in part & we prophesy in part, ¹⁰ but when the perfect comes, the partial passes away. ¹¹ When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
When I became a man, I set aside childish ways.
¹² Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
¹³ And now these three remain: faith, hope, & love;    but the greatest of these is love.

4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. "THAT CONTAINER IS LYING ABOUT ITS CONTENTS"
Matthew 7:15, “Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you LOOKING LIKE SHEEP on the OUTSIDE, but on the INSIDE they are really like wild WOLVES.” (GNT) My two favorite seasons are Winter and Fall! Winter, because I love Christmas, snow, carols, decorations and the like. And Fall, because I love the colors, Thanksgiving, the start of the scent of fireplaces, but most of all,…

1 John Bonus: What is Love? (Part 2 of 3)
Probably the best-known passage on love in the Greek scriptures is found Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth, 1 Corinthians 13. #WhatisLove #Agape #1Corinthians13
Expositors will often speak of heavenly love as agape, and probably the best-known passage on love in the Greek scriptures is found Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth, 1 Corinthians 13. 1 Corinthians 13 In this chapter, Paul describes the nature of agape as patient, kind, humble, cooperative, even-tempered, generous-hearted in a way that conveys trust and loyalty, ever…

What Lasts!
Whether there be prophecy, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away. . . . But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three. - 1 Corinthians 13:8-13
We discern the run of the Apostle’s thought best by thus omitting the intervening verses and connecting these two(v8 and v13). The part omitted is but a buttress of what has been stated in the former of our two verses; and when we thus unite them, there is disclosed plainly the Apostle’s intention of contrasting two sets of things, three in each. The one is prophecies, tongues, knowledge; the other, faith, hope, charity. There also comes out distinctly that the point mainly intended by the contrast is the transiency of the one and the permanence of the other. I ask this question: What will drop away? Paul answers, "Prophecies, tongues, knowledge." Now these three were all extraordinary gifts belonging to the present phase of the Christian life. But inasmuch as these gifts were the heightening of natural capacities and faculties, it is perfectly legitimate to enlarge the declarations and to use these three words in their widest signification. So understood they come to this, that all our present modes of apprehension and of utterance are transient, and will be left behind.
"Knowledge, it shall cease," and it shall cease because the perfect absorbs into itself the imperfect, as the in-rushing tide will obliterate the little pools in the rocks on the sea-shore. "We shall know face to face," which is what philosophers call by intention. Here our knowledge creeps from point to point, painfully amassing facts, and thence, with many hesitations and errors, groping its way towards principles and laws. Here it is imperfect, with many a gap in its circumference; or like the thin red line which shows the traveler’s route across a boundless prairie, or like the spiders thread in the telescope, stretched athwart the blazing disc of the sun - "but then face to face." Incomplete knowledge shall be done away; and so many of its objects will drop, so much of what makes the science of earth will be antiquated and effete. What would the hand-loom weaver’s knowledge of how to throw his shuttle be worth in a weaving-shed with a thousand looms? Just so much will the knowledges of earth be when we get yonder.
Modes of utterance will cease. With new experiences will come new methods of communication; as a man can speak and beasts can only growl or bark, so a man in heaven, with new experiences, will have a new method of communication. The comparison between that mode of utterance which we now have and that which we then possess will be like the difference between the old-fashioned semaphore, that used to wave about clumsy wooden arms, in order to convey intelligence, and the telegraph. Think, then, of a man going into that future life, and saying, " knew more about Sanskrit than anybody that ever lived in Europe"; " sang sweet song"; "was a past master in philology, grammars, and lexicons"; " was a great orator." "Tongues shall cease," and the modes of utterance that belonged to earth will drop away and be of no more use.
If these things are true with regard even to the highest form of these high and noble things, how much more and more solemnly true are they with regard to the aims and objects which most of us have in view! They will all drop away, and we shall be left, stripped of what, for most of us, has made the whole interest and activity of our lives.

When Do Tongues and Prophecy Cease?
(In my second article on “The Best Arguments for Cessationism” I mentioned that I would address the argument for the continuation of the gifts based on 1 Corinthians 13:8-13. I addressed this matter directly in a sermon I recently preached, Heaven Is a World of Love. The following is an excerpt from that sermon.) Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will…

“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.” Psalm 40:3 I am sure many of us have witnessed two distinct ways of singing a song and playing an instrument; and one appears to be more of a gift or an acquired gift than the other. There is the soloist and musician who studies the notes and practices methodically until the…

A Love Conqueror
Jesus Is "A Love Conqueror" He loved well and He finished well. We, as a family member can learn a lot from Him. So, take some time to glean from this family prayer exhortation, pray it up for your family. Live-Laugh-Love Well. Be A Love Conqueror!
Do not remember the past events; pay no attention to things of old. Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Isaiah 43:18-19 Open Your Heart To New Things Family means relationship mixing, as our families open up their borders to envelop new people coming in from other families. I call this the mish-mash of family dynamics. Some families have an easier…
