Best BFF Brawl: Round 1| Match 4B
Tumblr media
Propaganda Beneath the Cut
Flynn and Julie
Literally ride or die besties. Flynn cares about Julie so much and is literally on a text basis with Julie’s dad to report to him that she’s worried about Julie after her mothers death.
Mei and MK
- Rides a motorcycle
- Is a dragon
- Wields her family's heirloom sword
- Green
- Has epic fire powers
- Can and will kill people
She was there for him through thick and thin! She dragged him out to arcades and other various outings, as a bestie should. She's also slightly unhinged and offered to kill a man for him in the first episode, and if that's not bestie behavior, I don't know what is. She once threw a glass at MK and it nailed him in the forehead. She also tries throughout the series to get their rival/enemy to join the team and it's adorable every time. At one point the creators of the show explicitly said, in an episode, that there is NO romance between Mei and MK. They're besties and that's it. When Mei was in trouble, MK immediately rushed to help his best friend, and she helped him in return by assisting him in the fight with the Big Bad of the season. The next season, when she was captured, she refused to sit by and let the bad guy get his way, fighting back to make it back to MK. Your honor, she's the best BFF out there.
She is SO ride or die for MK. They are the absolute besties of the series and are shown to hang out a lot. Not much is known about how the met but it is very clear they’d die for each other. Even when everything is falling apart for MK, Mei is always there to be a level head and protect him. She is a *really* good friend. Seriously, I can’t think of many characters that radiate the same “Best friend vibes” as these two do. They’re great.
She’s a dragon and I think that’s pretty cool

18 Modern Words That Had Very Different And Curious Meanings In Old Cincinnati
Some words we use daily today meant something totally different more than a century past. Here are a few normal, everyday terms that once had surprisingly altered definitions long ago in Cincinnati.
Affinity In the early 1900s, “affinity” meant something very much like “soulmate” does today. In Cincinnati newspapers, “affinity” usually shows up in articles about divorce. Many a husband sought a divorce because he had found his “affinity”, and it wasn’t the woman he was married to. Jacob Pels told the Cincinnati Post [31 October 1907] on the occasion of his second divorce: “Twice I thought I found my affinity, and twice I made a bad mistake.”
Blue Today, if you’re blue, you are mildly depressed. Back in Old Cincinnati, “blue” meant risqué, or even obscene. Cincinnati ministers erupted in indignation when Millie DeLeon, the “Girl In Blue” (wink, wink!) performed at Heuk’s People’s Theater on Vine Street in 1901. And, when Cincinnati Redlegs Manager Clark Griffith excoriated the team after a dismal spring training game in Georgia, the telegraph company refused to carry the Enquirer’s dispatch [14 March 1909]: “Wishing to be perfectly accurate, we wrote out the rest that Griff said, but the telegraph man would not send it. He said his wire was a family wire of good and regular habits, and he would not insult it by asking it to carry a lot of blue language.”
Tumblr media
Boom This old term had nothing to do with firecrackers or other explosions. It meant to promote, or to hype, or to publicize. When Judge Andrew J. Pruden wrote to the editor praising a Cincinnati Post editorial, the Post headlined his letter [6 January 1893]: “Judge Pruden Indorses The Post In Its Efforts to Boom The City.” An editorial an 1888 edition the old McMicken Review at the University of Cincinnati encouraged students to “Boom the ‘Varsity!” Cynical Thomas Emery, a pioneer real estate developer, told the Post [1 July 1886] he was concerned about future investments: “Boom Cincinnati? Can you boom a dead dog? I don’t mean that Cincinnati is dead exactly, but she’s overbuilt.”
Brace To brace somebody meant to cheat them, and Cincinnati was swarming with galoots just salivating at the opportunity to brace someone. The bracers needed to watch out who they braced, though. Frank Y. Grayson in his classic “Pioneers of Night Life” tells the tale of Frank James, Jesse’s brother, getting fleeced at a Cincinnati card game: “James dropped $800 on the night. He knew that he had been braced. Before he left he said genially, ‘Well, boys, I’ll say one thing for you, you get it easier than I do.’”
Cake We’re not talking pastry here. This word figures into one of the most obscure lines in Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s classic “Casey at the Bat” from 1888:
But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake, And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake;
A “hoodoo” we still recognize as a jinx, but a “cake”? In 1888, everyone knew that a cake was a fool. Within the context of baseball, a cake was a loser.
Candlelight Many a romantic evening has been conducted by candlelight. In the days before electricity, “candlelight” was a time of day, specifically that time of evening when you lit your candles. The Cincinnati Gazette [11 June 1857] presented this line: “The preacher gave notice that, if the weather was fair, he would preach at candlelight, but, as it sprinkled a little, there was no congregation.”
Card There is not much call for classified advertisements these days, when everything is advertised online. Ads used to be the main source of income for newspapers, who called small advertisements “cards,” as in this example from the Enquirer [22 November 1890]: “Mrs. Pollock did not stop at advertising her business in circulars. She inserted a card in the Sunday Newsdealer.”
Cockpit Did you ever wonder why the place an airplane pilot sits is called a cockpit? It’s named for an actual pit in which roosters (or cocks) fought to the death. Cock-fighting was popular in Cincinnati, though intermittently illegal. The Cincinnati Commercial [11 January 1847] advertised a new venue: “A regular Cock Pit having been established in the rear of the “Lunch House,” fights will take place three times a week.” If cock-fighting was too high-class, Cincinnati also hosted rat-pits from time to time in which small dogs battled rodents.
Tumblr media
Combination Strictly speaking, in the 1800s, a “circus” was that entertainment taking place withing a sawdust “ring” which in Latin was “circus.” The other aspects of the modern circus – the traveling zoo known as the “menagerie” and the “side-show” or “exposition” – were considered separate enterprises. The first impresarios to “combine” all of these shows called them “combinations.” So, we have the Cincinnati Gazette [8 June 1872] reporting: “Warner’s big combination show attracted an immense crowd of spectators yesterday afternoon and evening.” And old John Robinson advertised his traveling spectacular as “Robinson’s Great Combination.”
Dashboard We use “dashboard” today to talk about status displays on our computer screens, which derived from the instrument panel in our automobiles, which referred to the array of gauges and dials in an aeroplane. But there was a much earlier and practical use of this word as the actual wooden board at the front of a carriage that kept stones and mud from being kicked into the driver’s face. From the Cincinnati Dollar Weekly Times [1 November 1855]: “The mare was put between the thills of a nice light buggy, her harness thoroughly adjusted by the owner, the reins carefully laid over the dashboard, and the usual chapter of advice opened concerning her management.”
Drummer An old definition of this word, metaphoric in origin, has nothing to do with music. A drummer was a salesperson, usually a traveling salesman, and usually a man on commission. The Enquirer [22 December 1871] reported: “The State of Maryland has in force a statute similar to that of Tennessee and several other States, which classes ‘drummers’ selling goods by sample for houses out of the State with peddlers, and exacts a license from them so heavy as to prohibit effectually sales in those States.”
Embarrassed If you realize, after ordering at an expensive restaurant, that you left your wallet at home, you might be embarrassed. That is close to the old-time definition of this word. It meant bankrupt. The Cincinnati Gazette [27 April 1837] related the story of a scoundrel named John Law: “With him perished all Law’s hopes for regaining his personal fortune. He became embarrassed; suits were commenced against him.”
Grocery So many old-time groceries offered liquor by the glass that “grocery” came to mean almost any saloon that emphasized the hard stuff over beer. Here’s the Western Christian Advocate [20 May 1836]: “When I hear a man say ‘my cigars cost me two dollars a week’ – I should not be surprised if I see him drinking in a grocery or tavern.”
Hilarious The history of comedy reminds us that we find drunks to be humorous. Back in the day, “hilarious” did not mean funny; it meant extremely inebriated. The Enquirer [14 January 1870] recounted one such case: “Night before last, this identical phonographer, who now calls himself Henry Henderson, was found in a highly hilarious condition, enjoying the society of ugly females in a bad house on Eighth street.”
Map There are abundant synonyms for physiognomy, but Cincinnati in the 1890s had a good one – “map.” In regaling his readers with memories of post-midnight culinary delights, Frank Grayson recalled Simon the Hot-Corn Man, who slathered his steaming ears of corn with “a substance that passed as butter.” Grayson recollected how “There were a lot of greasy maps decorating Vine Street in the wake of Simon.”
Queer In recent times, “queer” has settled into a linguistic niche as a sobriquet for what used to be called “alternative lifestyles.” Around 1880, however, the primary connotation of “queer” was financial. It referred to counterfeit money. The Cincinnati Gazette [28 October 1873] reported on the trial of M.Y. Morton: “He is an old gray haired man, and told the detective that he had been ‘pushing the queer’ for thirty-five years, making a good business in buying and selling counterfeit.”
Slut Ever since it became a term of sexist opprobrium, “bitch” has been ruined as the technical name for a female canine. Few today remember that “slut” was synonymous with “bitch” and also referred to distaff dogs. An advertisement in the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune [21 June 1870] sought: “Dogs – Two full blood Scotch rat terriers dog and slut. Must be a year old or older.”
Snide You rarely hear this word today outside the phrase “snide remark.” When you do, it often has the tint of sarcasm. In old Cincinnati, however, “snide” meant fake, cheap or counterfeit. The Cincinnati Daily Star [23 January 1880] recorded that “Ed. Kline was pulled in yesterday for selling ‘snide’ jewelry.” The term applied to people, too. The Enquirer [5 April 1880] noted: “A snide party styling themselves Tennessee Minstrels were rotten-egged and mobbed in Easton, Maryland, on Friday night.”

“I did not expect you to show up,” Carrie told Julie. It wasn’t accusatory or anything, just honestly surprised.
“Well, it’s kind of what we do. You know, fires and stuff?” Julie said, not sure what she should be saying right now. She should go get lunch actually.
“Yeah, no, I just- didn’t expect you to show up,” Carrie said again. Oh. Right. Julie wasn’t sure if she should be offended or not.
“Uhm…”
“I didn’t mean-” Carrie hurried to say. “Shit. It wasn’t a dig at you,” she tried to explain.

Which era of Archie Sonic did you enjoy more? Pre reboot or post reboot?
Hmmm that's a good question. Idk I think I liked some of the writing post reboot better and I did like the new characters. I also personally think the removal of the love triangles specifically made the comic so much more enjoyable for me and opened up for better characterization for Sally. However, reading post sgw I did miss some of the old charcters (rip all those claimed penders ocs) and their now unresolved storylines, was sad at the loss of certain character struggles (like Rotor who was struggling between his health and wanting to be in the field again), and I missed how pre sgw had just some of the most insane or out of the blue plot developments/world building choices.
In terms of enjoyment, though, I'd have to say post reboot for the following reasons:
1. I enjoyed pre reboot for what it was more often than not, but I had my most fun during Flynn era. I liked how the Penders era moved things to being more serious, but I often felt like he had good and interesting concepts/ideas without the writing to back it up. Meanwhile, while Flynn wasn't perfect either, I felt like he was able to make a lot of those established relationships more believable to me, and while he also made some batshit plot choices he had more of the writing skills to back it up. This is all to say that aside from some stuff at the very beginning of pre reboot, it was a long while before I was able to really enjoy what I was reading instead of just taking things I liked where I could. Post reboot was a lotta Flynn, so despite the loss of characters and plotlines I enjoyed greatly, I at least felt like I could enjoy everything post reboot.
2. It didn't have all of those Sonic based love triangles. I know I know I'm a multishipper I ship Sonic with a lot of people but by god. I just could not take the Sonic/Sally drama anymore. Bunnie/Antoine was fine. Flynn actually made me believe in Julie-Su and Knuckles as decent partners. But by that point (and this is coming from someone who loved Sonic/Sally before reading the comic) everything going on re-Sonic and Sally's romance prospects with the opposite gender and each other was like beating a dead horse. And for Sally specifically, she had been recharacterized so so so many times pre-reboot just for the sake of drama that she often...didn't feel like her own character. So post reboot with the love triangles and the romance with Sonic removed I felt like we could really see who she was as a character and a clear vision of her ambitions/cares. I could feel like who she *is* wouldn't be changed on a whim for the purpose of plot.
3. As they say, people get better with practice. And while I thought some of his pre-reboot stuff was interesting, I felt like by post reboot era, Flynn had grown better at depicting the nuance of living under the eggman empire.
So yeah I guess I'd say, gun to my head? Post reboot. But it's really more complicated than that. I did enjoy both a lot, and especially in the last like 80 issues pre reboot. Pre reboot was wild an interesting in a way that I enjoyed with characters and storylines I loved, but it wasn't always written amazingly and contained much too many ongoing love triangles and mehhh canon relationships to me. Post reboot gave certain characters more time to shine as characters, reverted the pre reboot growth of other characters, delivered some of its nuanced situations better, and was largely written nicely, but you could often feel that the post reboot team was now restricted in a much different way than they were pre reboot (like, pre reboot's struggle was keeping up with existing storylines and relationships and keeping things true to what they have been, but post reboot's struggle feels more like it may have had some of Sega's restrictions we see nowadays).
In the end, though, I miss characters and storylines from both pre and post reboot after the cancelation.

Part II of Harper starts Hogwarts
Challenge: 'New Clothes' for the Back 2 School Chaos Challenge
Flynn and Harper go shopping with their reluctant mother for new clothes who sees the magical world as something terrible and destroying her plans for their future but can Flynn change her mind?
Here for part 1 but can be read as a stand alone
Warnings: Magic hate
Walking through Diagon Alley were three of the Nowak brood. It was Flynn's fourth time here; he first went alone with Hagrid, who helped him find everything. The second year, he went with his father, who was curious about the magical world and how it all worked. He was easily fascinated and amused by all he saw, though when his father came home to share what he had witnessed, his mother wanted to hear none. The third was when they bought everything except the school clothes a few weeks ago.
Their father went last time, but his mother had to take them due to the last-minute situation and his father's work preventing him from coming. Flynn didn't miss the roll of her eyes at the breakfast table.
"So this is Diagon Alley? It's a lot smaller than I thought." She remarked. "Don't run ahead, sweetie. Flynn, where can we get the robes?"
"Oh, that's at Madam Malkins." Flynn looked around; he only recalled the dark dewberry with mannequins. He remembered the owls were on the opposite side of the cobbled road, making up the main road of Diagon Alley.
Harper bolted off regardless, looking at every window again. Flynn was distracted alongside Harper until they finally found the Eeylops Owl Emporium. Elizabeth backed off the loud hoots and beady eyes judging her.
"Right, kids. Let's see what we need to get first on the list. "She held the list at a distance, squinting until she put on her reading glasses. "Robes. A pointed hat. Protective gloves, dragon hide or similar. Dragon hide? Dragons are a real thing, Flynn?"
"Yeah, mum. There's actual dragons you know." Flynn shrugged nonchalantly. His time at Hogwarts made him quickly learn that the strange, bizarre and mythical was the normal. His mother's face paled as he said that.
"Wait, actual dragons! At Hogwarts, so cool!" Harper butted in.
Flynn shook his head, his curls landing on his face. "Well, we don't have at Hogwarts but apparently Gringott's had or was the ministry of magic?"
This didn't reassure Elizabeth any further. Instead, she reluctantly ushered them in. She nervously looked round; Flynn realised how out of his place his mum looked like a fish out of water. Wizards and witches look around in black, green and purple robes and pointed hats and his mother in muggle clothes, nervously clutching her bag. To be fair to his mother, there were more muggle parents during July and not the week before the term started.
The seamstress, Madam Malkins, plump and dressed in a soft lilac robe, approached their mother asking about making new robes. Harper went first for measurements. Their mother was astounded by the tape moving like a snake around Harper's shoulders.
Flynn looked around, brushing his fingers over the fabrics and picking up anything interesting. Bags that change texture, robes that can repair themselves.
"Don't touch that Flynn! "Elizabeth slapped his hands away. "You don't know if that's dangerous!"
"It's just sunglasses, mum," Flynn said matter-of-factly as he put the squiggled-shaped sunglasses away.
"Well, I'm learning nothing is truly safe based on what you tell me. "Her voice pitched higher. "I shouldn't let you and Harper go to that wretched, dangerous school."
"Not everything is dangerous, mum. There's so much fun things like quidditch." The look on his mum's face prompted further explanation. "It's were we fly on brooms with three different balls. I'm a beater for my house team. Basically I used a bat to protect my team from bludgers. I also get learn and see magical creatures this year. I heard we might get to see an actual hippogriff, you know those half eagle, half-"
"I get the picture, Flynn. "His mother said coldly. He thought sharing all the fun things he gets to do would be as exciting to her.
He said nothing else. Flynn hated being useless and, worse of all, a disappointment. His mum had already given up the idea of any higher education for him as his grades would just be below or just average. It's why when Flynn showed talent in sports, particularly in football, she clung to it and helped him to pursue his future there.
They didn't speak much throughout the process of getting measured and tailoring the robes. It took a bit for Elizabeth to wrap her head around the wizarding money system. Still, she managed to figure it out quicker than Flynn could remember.
Once they got all they needed as they were about to head home, Flynn spotted the ice cream parlour, now famous for having any flavour possible. Hagrid had told him how the establishment was bought and continued the legacy of the past owner, who was dragged off by death eaters to his demise. His mum and Harper didn't need to know that part of history.
"Mum, mum! Could we have ice cream, please, mum, please!" Harper tugged on Elizabeth's sleeves.
"They have every flavour possible, Mum," Flynn explained.
"Every possible flavour? That's not possible!" Their mum scoffed.
"Could we still have an ice cream, please mum?" He begged alongside his sister. Elizabeth sighed but gave in to their wishes.
There were different and new flavours that Flynn didn't recall seeing last time. Harper went for the gummy bear flavoured while Flynn tried out the custard cream and hot cherry pie. He could taste the blend of the cold custard and hot, sweet flavour melting in his mouth.
Flynn glanced over as he noticed his mum looking curiously at the flavours. His mum hovered near the opening with their most popular ice cream displayed but ultimately approached the ice cream parlour.
"Do you make cherry garcia? "She asked.
"Yes, we can make cherry Garcia for you, ma'am." The man smiled. "That will be three sickles and eleven knuts."
Elizabeth fumbled through her purse and handed the money to him. Five minutes later, he appeared with the ice cream in a cone.
"Bon apetit, madam." He said.
Their mother walked over, ensuring her ice cream didn't spill onto their table. Harper and Flynn cheekily grinned, remembering the fuss their mother made and how stiff she acted around everything to do with magic.
She took a bite of the ice cream. Her eyebrows furrowed before her face displayed mild confusion.
"What is it, mum?" Harper asked.
"How did he do that?"
"Do what?"
"This ice cream taste exactly like how I remember back when I was a child. "Elizabeth pointed to her ice cream. It was a mix of vanilla with a large chunkGarciaherry and chocolate. "Cherry garcia was all the rage back then but now I can hardly find it or doesn't taste how I remember it."
"Maybe its magic? "Flynn grinned.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, but it was that step forward Flynn had hoped for. It may be small, but it was better than nothing.

TCM Remembers: Olivia de Havilland (July 1, 1916 - July 26, 2020)
Tumblr media
Originally written for TCM’s Now Playing Guide in 2016 by our late host Robert Osborne (May 3, 1932 - March 6, 2017).
I confess it: as a Brit would say, I have been one very lucky bloke. It has never ceased to amaze me that a fellow with no connections whatsoever to show business, and who grew up in a small farm community in the Northwest (population: 2500), could end up on a national television network with the dream job of talking about classic movies as I get to do on TCM. Something else which constantly reminds me of how lucky I am is the 40-year friendship I've had with TCM's Star of the month for this July, Olivia de Havilland.
I first met Olivia in 1976 when I did an interview with her for a magazine article I'd been assigned. At that point she'd long since been semi-retired from acting in films and was happily living in Paris as the wife of Pierre Galante (the editor of the renowned publication Paris Match), living life as Madame Galante, and being the mother of a son, Benjamin, and daughter, Gisele. Our interview was scheduled for an hour in the commissary of the Universal studios--it lasted four hours, accompanied by a great many champagne bubbles. It turned out to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, Louie.
During that initial visit we spent a great deal of time talking about her Hollywood years and her strong, thoughtful memories of the great films she'd made-- Gone With the Wind (1939), The Heiress (1949), the underrated In This Our Life (1942) and the nine films she made with Errol Flynn, including The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), which forever after defined Olivia and Errol Flynn as one of the great screen teams. She also talked about the clinkers, which she'd been forced to do under the old studio contract system, recounting them with great flashes of humor. The first film she'd made had been Warner Bros'. lofty and distinguished A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) and, she said, "When they asked me to sign a long-term contract I thought 'Shakespeare--what better way could one have an acting career than by doing Shakespeare?'” Soon came a rude awakening.

Next, they assigned her to do a weak little comedy about baseball with Joe E. Brown, followed soon after by Wings of the Navy (1939), which she considers the absolute nadir of her career. It was as far afield from Shakespeare as one could get, and she said to herself, "Whoa, Olivia. This doesn't bode well for you at Warner Bros." From then on she began campaigning for better roles, and they did eventually come her way, along with two Academy Awards and the reputation of being one of the screen's finest actresses.
We'll be sharing many of Olivia's stories with you on Friday nights this month as we also celebrate a great landmark birthday for her--her 100th. It is her birthday but we're the ones who get the presents. Every Friday we'll be toasting Olivia, showing 39 de Havilland films in all, including all the biggies such as To Each His Own (1946, Oscar #1), The Snake Pit, (1948, Oscar nomination #3), The Heiress (Oscar® #2) and several which are lesser known, such as when she played France's Queen Mother in the era of the Three Musketeers in the rarely shown The 5th Musketeer (1979) with Rex Harrison, Jose Ferrer and Cornel Wilde. And just for the fun of it, you can see 1939's Wings of the Navy and decide if you agree with Olivia's assessment of it.

Through the years, in addition to all the many assets that are such an integral part of her, she's also proven to be someone who always makes good on promises. The night she celebrated her 80th birthday in Paris in 1996, Olivia told me she'd just made a vow to live to be 100. And she's done it. During a more recent phone chat, she said, "I've changed my goal. I've decided I want to live to be at least 110." That's the best birthday present this amazing woman from Hollywood's golden era could give us. I have no doubt she'll make it. Bravo, Olivia!
