Tarot Time II: The Reckoning

Or; My Nice and Accurate SPNWin Tarot Shenanigans

So if you were following me last September, you might remember the day that I was overcome with a sudden urge to do a tarot reading for season one of The Winchesters. Given that I think it's always a good idea to listen to random bolts of inspiration, no matter how far out of left field they've come, I immediately shuffled my cards and got to work.

I pulled fourteen cards in total — one for each episode, and one for the season as a whole — and made an attempt at predicting the story direction and details based on what I saw. While my more specific interpretations weren't all winners, the baseline meaning of each card has turned out to be shockingly accurate and relevant.

My original post and the follow ups can be found here and here, but you can find a breakdown under the cut, followed by the new three card spread I did tonight... this got long.

First, here are all the cards I turned over for that initial spread, along with their base meanings, and how each card ultimately connected with the episode it was pulled for.

1.01 Pilot — Ace of Swords The pursuit of truth and the action of taking control. Both of these things describe Dean's role as narrator and the active role he's taken in his own story by delivering the letter, as well as John and Mary actively seeking answers. 1.02 Teach Your Children Well — The Hermit Striking out alone, stepping away to find a clearer perspective without outside influence, and seeking or gaining independence. The major theme of this episode as laid out by Dean's narration is the importance of breaking free from your parents expectations and living your life on your own terms, while still taking on the lessons they taught you. 1.03 You're Lost Little Girl — The World (reversed) Being stuck in place, being unable to move forward until you’re ready to take responsibility and free yourself from what binds you. This describes (quite literally) Mary's encounter with the Bori Baba, & turned out to be the key to freeing herself from the trap. 1.04 Masters of War — Six of Swords Moving on after a loss, picking up the pieces and accepting support, and trusting the onward journey. This episode was largely centered around John's PTSD and his feelings of guilt and grief relating to his friend who was killed in action, and a major aspect of this was all of his friends and family (and the staff at the hospital) trying to offer him support. 1.05 Legend of a Mind — Two of Cups Healing damaged relationships, forming deeper bonds. The heart of this episode was all about repairing the broken relationship between Ada and her son Tony. 1.06 Art of Dying — Three of Cups Reunions, friendship and support when it’s most needed, the harvest, things coming to fruition. We saw Mary reunite with Tracy, Tracy reunite (unhappily) with Mac, John struggling and being offered support from all of his friends, and Tracy having to reap what was sown through a past betrayal. 1.07 Reflections — Nine of Pentacles Unfulfilling abundance, dissatisfaction, the certainty that something is missing despite appearances. This episode sees the core four get a lot of things they've been searching for — Henry, power for the Ostium, more information on the Akrida. But none of it is enough. Henry disappears after a few minutes & John doesn't get the time he needed. The Ostium doesn't have enough power to absorb all the Akrida. They find out they're missing information about the queen. 1.08 Hang on to Your Life — Seven of Cups Uncertainty when presented with seemingly clear choices, looking for flaws before moving forward. Samuel catching the flaws in Loki's tricks. Carlos finding the loophole in the deal. 1.09 Cast Your Fate to the Wind — Eight of Pentacles Acknowledging the desire to move forward, exponential emotional and spiritual growth, working through issues, being proactive. This describes John and Mary deciding to be together after dancing around it in the previous episode, Carlos and Anton planning another date, as well as John's attempt to avoid the fate he'd been shown by being proactive about his "death." 1.10 Suspicious Minds — Temperance Testing the waters and moving toward healing, finding peace and balance. Carlos taking things slow with Anton, Dean's narration in this episode talks about how rare happy endings for are hunters. 1.11 You've Got a Friend — Eight of Cups Letting go of old constraints, looking to the future. This episode had a strong focus on the way Lata's past was hurting her and holding her back. 1.12 The Tears of a Clown — The Tower Breaking free, total upheaval of the status quo, letting go of the fear of change. Honestly... how much do I even have to say for this one? People were trapped in a pocket dimension by a clown named Limbo, and broke free by facing things head-on. 1.13 Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye — The Devil (reversed) Total release and liberation. We'll see in a few days!!! Season One Overall — The Moon (reversed) Seeing the light, anxieties being put to rest. Ditto!

As you can see, this ended up being a lot more accurate than I could have hoped as someone who had really been neglecting their tarot practice.

So even though I already pulled a card for the season finale back before the show had started airing, I thought I'd do a simple three card reading for 1.13 tonight, now that we're almost at the end.

The photo at the top of this post shows the cards I pulled for this reading, and these are the three cards, left to right:

Page of Swords (reversed) This card means trouble, generally in the form of a young person who stirs things up on purpose, tells white lies, or arrives bearing news of large-scale change that will result in challenges for those concerned. Ten of Swords (reversed) This card means that the worst is over. Forgiveness and letting go of hurt. Healing of physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds. It can also signify a refusal to accept an ending, and holding on even if something is over. Three of Wands This card means new adventures are ahead. Exploration, excitement, and looking ahead toward a world of possibilities.

The first card was drawn to represent where things will kick off at the beginning of the episode, the second to represent the core of the episode, and the third to represent where things ultimately land at the end of the season.

With what little information we have from the episode promo, I'm inclined to think that the "young person" represented by the Page of Swords is actually Dean.

Sure, he's technically older than his parents right now thanks to the Jeremy Bearimy of it all, but chronologically speaking he's younger. And we know he'll appear in the episode at least once because we saw that little flash of his arm in the promo as he handed the letter to John back before The Winchesters timeline began. Maybe the episode will open with that flashback, and give us some more information about what Dean is up to?

Dean certainly did come bearing information that resulted in major challenges for the main cast, and presumably did so while knowing that he could potentially cause problems by messing with the past. And he told a white lie of omission by not being honest with John about who he is or why he was there.

(I will add that when I saw the Page of Swords I also thought of Jack, so I want to jot that thought down just in case. The idea that he might make an appearance is honestly just wild speculation that has been floating around in my head for a little while based on nothing but a combination of vibes, themes, and intense over-analysis of a handful of AlCal's social media interactions, so while I don't think it's super likely, it's still pinging my brain enough that I wanted to mention it just in case. As I see it, Jack's departure on SPN was just vague enough that even though he said he was going to float off and turn into a sunbeam after fixing Heaven, there's absolutely enough wiggle room for him to still have a physical form if that's what this story wants to do. Mostly just noting all of that down here on the one in a million chance that he shows up.)

The Ten of Swords really threw me for a minute, because initially I'd been thinking of the episode's core in terms of, essentially, the bulk of the story. But this card makes me think that the answer I got has more to do with the core of the episode in terms of the heart, the root, the foundation, the focus.

Because the finale is what the season has been building toward, and back before the pilot aired Robbie said that episode thirteen* would turn over all the cards (yes, I'm having a sensible chuckle about that right now) and spoke about it in such a way that it feels like whatever happens in this episode, it's the whole reason for the rest of the show existing.

With that in mind, I can't help but think that this card has more to do with us than the characters. Holding on. Healing. Forgiving. These are certainly things we all see Dean doing through his narration and music choices, but it also feels a lot like what fandom (and frankly, Jensen) has been getting out of this, too.

Finally, the three of wands. I think this one is pretty self explanatory, and I don't think I could have pulled a better card for the end of the season. This puts me in mind of the Buffy finale, to be honest. The battle is won. There's a whole world of possibility. It's time to look ahead.

I'm still keeping all of my fingers and toes crossed for a season two pickup, but if things don't work out on that front, an ending that has this kind of energy is one that I think I'll be happy with.

Seeing lots of posts in the tags of people debating over if Clark and Lois treat the boys the same or differently. I think it’s quite obvious both parents are more strict with Jonathan. But I’m not trying to start an argument with random people on the internet, that doesn’t bring me joy nor do I have the energy for it. So enjoy a couple of examples just off the top of my head where similar (not exact) actions from the boys lead to different reactions from the parents.

1.03 - The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower

2.03 - The Thing In The Mines

*Jordan calls his father a rageoholic to his face when his powers are glitching uncontrollably*

*Lois completely ignores it* “Boys, go upstairs.”

(PS: If you’re bashing Jonathan for his recent choices, maybe rewatch season one and two and pay more attention to how Jon is treated by literally everyone and all the shit he goes through. Oh, and remember, he’s a child going through all this 😊)

You woke to the mumbling noise of others talking. With a groan you sat up, whining at the pain you felt in your stomach.

You recognized the voices as Clarke, Bellamy, Raven and Octavia. You couldn’t make everything they were saying out, but Octavia was angry. Slowly you spun your legs around so they were dangling off the edge of the table, crouching slightly so you could hear better. A couple of words stood out more than others ‘bomb’ ‘Lincoln’ ‘Anya’ Who were these people? You could hear Raven’s voice getting louder.

“I’m not having this conversation again. I did what I had to.”

The moment your feet touched the ground you instantly regretted trying to stand up. You stumbled forward with a loud thumb, alerting the others to your presence. The hitch to the room opened, and you saw a head of black hair moving quickly. It was Octavia. She wrapped her arms around and squeezed tightly. “Oh my god Alba, you gave me such a fright.”

You hugged her back. “O, I’m okay. I promise.”

She pulled back from the hug, and you could see the tears in her eyes. “I thought you were going to die...I really did.”

You opened your mouth to ask Octavia about the grounder that stabbed you, but quickly closed it when Clarke came up the ladder.

With a frown she helped you stand up. “Hey, I don’t want you bursting those stitches.”

“Nice to see you as well Clarke.”

Clarke’s frown softened, “how do you feel?”

You paused before answering her question, because you honestly had no idea what you felt. The memory of what happened to you was hazy. You remembered being stabbed, because you pushed Finn out of the way. Finn. “How’s Finn?”

Clarke glanced over at Octavia before answering. “He’s fine, now.”

“What do you mean now? Did he get stabbed as well?”

Octavia stood by you and squeezed your hand. “You are both okay now, that’s what matters. The blade was poisoned. It caused you and Finn to both have seizures.”

Clarke sighed, “Finn didn’t get stabbed, but he had a cut on his hand and somehow got the poison in it.”

This didn’t make any sense. If you and Finn were fine, why did they both look miserable? “How long have I been out for?”

“Long enough.” Clarke shook her head, “After I check your stitches, I’m sure Octavia will fill you in what’s been going on.”

Your eyes nearly popped out of your head with the information Octavia had told you. Finn and Lincoln had set up a peace meeting that resulted in a war starting. Bellamy and Clarke had found weapons. Raven had managed to communicate with the ark. Murphy was back. Octavia explained how the grounders used him as a weapon to spread a virus around the camp, and they had blown up the bridge to try and give them more time. Something else had gone, your friend was holding back.

“O, I need to ask you something. You might think I’m crazy, but I’m so sure of it.”

Octavia stared at you nervously, she nodded her head. “Yeah?”

You spoke quietly so nobody else could hear what you were about to say. “The grounder that stabbed me...I don’t think he wanted to hurt me.”

“He didn’t.” Octavia let out a deep sigh, “I need to tell you something, so please don’t hate me. I let the Lincoln...the grounder who stabbed you escape.”

You were confused. “Escape from where?”

“Here.” She said waving her arms around the room. It suddenly occurred to you that they wouldn’t have carried you to the top floor of the drop-ship straight away. “Bellamy and his gang of thugs brought him back here for information. When Lincoln didn’t talk they began torturing him. I was afraid they would kill him...so once I got what I needed I helped him go.”

Octavia pulled up her sleeve to reveal the cut on her arm, you leaned in closer to inspect it. “O, what did you do?”

“Lincoln wasn’t going to give us the antidote, but I trusted he wouldn’t let me die so I cut my arm with the same blade he stabbed you with.” She paused, “Lincoln saved my life before. He blew the fog horn that stopped the other grounders from killing you.” Of course, it was starting to make sense. “He never wanted to hurt you. He asks me all the time if you are awake, he wants to apologize.” You had no words. Nobody had ever done anything like that for you before. You pulled Octavia into a hug that surprised her. “I thought you would be mad at me.”

You shook your head. “I’m not mad Octavia, I’m really proud of you.” You pulled back from the hug to point at her arm. “You did that to save me and Finn. And I’m glad you helped him escape.”

Octavia smiled at you. “I was so scared you’d hate me Al, I dunno what I do if I’d lose you.”

You shook your head with a slight chuckle, “is there anything else I need to know?”

Octavia shrugged, “probably. But my mind has gone blank.”

You looked out the window into the camp below. Everything looked normal, as if nothing ever happened. “Fancy helping me get down them ladders? I know Clarke said I should stay up there until she gets back from hunting, but I’m so bored.”

“Pissing off the princess? Now that I can help you with.”

After a while Octavia went off to see Lincoln, and you promised to cover for her if anybody asked. You spoke to Monty and Jasper briefly, who filled you in on the whole camp getting high after eating some nuts.

“Y/N!”

You turned to see Raven stepping out of her tent. She had a wide smile on her face as she hugged you. “I’m so glad you are okay!”

“Thanks Raven.” You stepped back, “I told you I’d keep your boy safe.”

A look of sadness washed over Raven’s face, something was wrong. She must have sensed you were going to ask because she shook her head. “I’m fine honestly. I just can’t thank you enough, Finn probably would have died if it wasn’t for you.”

Raven blinked away the tears in her eyes, “I better get back to work.”

“Are you sure? Whatever is going on you can tell me.”

She nodded. “Thanks, I just-” you followed her gaze to Finn, who was standing laughing with Clarke. Oh. “I just need to get back to making more bullets.”

You felt guilty for not following her, but the best thing to do was let her have time to herself. It couldn’t have been easy watching the person you love loving someone else. The feeling of a pair of arms wrapping around you from behind took you off guard. All the hugging was starting to hurt.

You chuckled, “who’s squeezing me now?”

The person spun you around to face them. Murphy. Tears started to spill from the corners of your eyes. You never thought you’d see him again. In typical Murphy fashion, he pouted when he saw your tears. “Are you disappointed that I’m back? No need to cry-”

You cut him off by pressing your lips against his, it wasn’t a passionate kiss. It was soft and gentle. Pulling back from him you smiled, “I’m so glad you are alive Murphy, I heard about the grounders.”

He looked down at you, “yeah. I don’t know who hates me more, the people in the camp or outside it.”

You took his hand. “Come on, you can tell me about it while I check you over.”

“Ouch!”

“Don’t be a baby, give me your hand.”

You had been pouring leftover alcohol onto Murphy’s fingernails to make sure they weren’t going to get infected. Clarke obviously hadn’t given him the once over because he still had a couple of deep cuts that needed to be stitched up.

“Thanks,” you glanced up at Murphy. “I mean it Alba, nobody else even looks at me. They all think I’m a traitor.”

You frowned, “I’m glad you told them. If not they would have killed you.”

“Maybe I’d be better-”

“No!” You snapped, knowing where he was going with this. “Don’t say that! Don’t even think about it! I’d be lost without you Murphy, and you might not think it now but things will get better someday. For all of us.”

Murphy tilted his head to the side and brushed a stay tear that had fallen down your cheek. He had made some really bad judgment calls since landing on the ground, but you knew Murphy was a good guy. He just had a tough start in life.

“So, did you have a welcome party waiting for you to wake up?”

You appreciated Murphy changing the subject, a small smile pulled at the corner of your lips. “I...I fell off the bed,” you laughed. “I tried to stand up but it didn’t work. Octavia rushed up to see me, then Clarke came to check on my stitches...oh and I spoke to Raven.” Murphy pulled a face at your comment. “What?”

“I’m guessing your new BFF didn’t tell you how things went down with the grounder? I mean...I know I wasn’t here but I’ve heard things. And shit, she got dark.”

“Octavia already told me about Bellamy torturing Lincoln...I...wait, when you said ‘she’ do you mean Raven?” Murphy nodded. “Raven helped torture the grounder?”

“I heard she shocked him with wires.”

You were lost for words. You didn’t know Raven that well, but you assumed she wouldn’t have stooped to that level. Wait...Finn. She did it for somebody she loved. “No, O never mentioned it.”

Murphy suddenly stood up, “what was that?” You turned to look in his direction to the flaps of the tent, and shrugged. “I thought I saw somebody was standing there.”

“Probably just the wind.”

When night fell most of the delinquents gathered around the fire. A few couples strayed to have some privacy, while others stayed and got drunk. You twiddled with a piece of thread that was coming from your top. Trying to process so many things at once was hard, and it was starting to give you a headache.

Sighing, you said goodnight to Monty, Jasper and Octavia, and headed towards your tent. As you approached your tent you noticed movement inside it. Shit. Gulping down you reached for the gun tucked into the back of your trousers. Bellamy would no doubt freak if he saw you with it, but having it close made you feel safe. You slowly pushed open the flaps to the tent with one hand, while clicking the safety off with the other. The light was dim but you could make out the figure of someone sitting on your bed.

“Raven?” She jumped to her feet, and gave you an alarmed look when noticed the gun in your hand. “What are you doing in the dark? I could have shot you.”

“Sorry...I Just needed to talk to you, and I didn’t know where you were.”

You sighed, “it’s fine.” You tucked the gun underneath your bed and flung some dirty clothes on top of it. “What’s going on? Is something wrong?”

“I came by to see how you were feeling earlier when I heard you and Murphy talking. I-he told you what I did.”

You sat down on the bed, and kicked off your boots. “Raven, I don’t agree with it. But I’m also not judging.”

“You don’t think I’m a monster?” Raven’s voice broke as she spoke, it was the first time you had ever seen her so vulnerable. You shook your head. “How can you be so nice all the time? Isn’t it exhausting?”

You let out a snort of laughter at her comment. “I’m not, trust me. I’m just trying to make the best of a bad situation.”

Raven joined you on the bed, “what do you mean?”

“I’m just trying to enjoy my freedom until the rest of the ark comes down. I imagine many of us won’t be pardoned of our crimes and will either get floated or locked up again.”

Even in the dark you could see the brunette’s eyebrows coming together in a frown. “Well the ark would just need to get through me first.”

“I’m sure Jaha will be shaking.” You chuckled, before noticing the look on Raven’s face. “Is there anything else going on?”

“From the moment I landed I knew something was different. Finn...he doesn’t look at me the way he used to, he looks at her like that instead.” her? It took you a few seconds to catch on to what she was talking about. “They had sex not long after they came down here.”

You knew Finn had feelings for Clarke, but never realised how far they had taken things.“I’m so sorry, I had no idea.”

Raven began to sob. “I feel so stupid! I risked my life to come down here to be with Finn, and the whole time he was sleeping with somebody else. What makes it worse is he hid it from me.”

You admired Raven for being so strong, she was heartbroken but still used her amazing brain to help the rest of the camp out.

She turned to face you, “I’d hate to impose...but I really don’t want to see him right now.”

You smiled at her, “you can stay in here whenever you want.”

Raven thanked you before you both got comfortable in the bed. You spent the rest of the night talking before falling asleep.

The 3 times Ahsoka called him ‘Anakin’

It rocked me the first time I saw Brothers it still rocks me now though I’ve never talked about it. Only In Season 4, Episode 21 (out of 22) is the very first time we have the main character refers to the other main character with his first name in person.

She’s such a good student and has so much respect for her master. No matter how reckless Anakin Skywalker seems to the casual eye, he has taught her so much about courage, command and compassion. She has fought by his side and she trusts him with her life. He believes in her and stood by her when no one else does. He is her big brother. In return of that trust, she vowed to watch over him too. She would have his back in battles and she would keep an eye on him during his ‘aggressive negotiations’. She would never stop trying to save him. (1.13)

Outside of my sentiment and looking at the progression critically, it’s also interesting to see Ahsoka’s gradual closeness with her Master, and that’s she getting more comfortable and confident to see herself as his partner instead of just his subordinate.  

Sure in the first three seasons Ahsoka refers to her Master by first name with other people, but with all the seniors around her, she really uses ‘Master Skywalker’ more often. Even with her being the most ‘high-ranked’ person in the room around Rex, ‘Master Skywalker’ is still what she goes for (1.06, 1.19). The formality is only broken down in literal life and death situations or when she relaxes enough to reveal herself.   [Gifset]

1.13 Jedi Crash is the first episode we see the first name drops from Ahsoka, when Anakin was mortally injured saving her. It’s also an important episode for Ahsoka to learn balancing her loyalty to Anakin and to sacrifice for the greater good, her compassion versus an overdose that turns into attachment. In Jedi Crash alone, Ahsoka calls her Master by his first name four times, but never in front of him. The very first mention from her is actually her response for Aayla, a Jedi Knight and her superior, asking her to help on the bridge when their ship is heading for a star. ‘Commander Bly doesn’t need my help, Anakin does,’ she protested. (which isn’t included in the set because it’s a weird shot to gif and i proceeded on the easy path and picked the third mention) She is so distraught her Master nearly died trying to save her, that she fails to see the bigger picture. If nothing she’s made even more insecure that she is to blame with any harm that comes Anakin’s way. The second mention is similarly another protest only minutes later, ‘That will cut off Anakin’s life support!’ to Aayla’s very necessary action to save the crew. Third time featured in gifset. 

The last mention is a concluding comment, a temporary relief - ‘If I had stayed with Anakin, we probably wouldn’t have found this village in time to save him. At least this whole ordeal is over now.’ She has been desperate to save Anakin this whole episode and only when they’ve succeeded she allows herself to relax a little, to take a breath, but she hasn’t yet sprung back to default. It just makes me ache all over again for how determined she already was despite being looked down on simply of her age, and how this trait makes her such an admirable and lovable figure for the then younger me to look up to.

Season 2

The discussion with Barriss is the odd one from the set because it’s the only occasion where she is not exactly worrying about her Master’s safety. Barriss was the first peer that Ahsoka has, who understands her pride as well as insecurities as a Padawan. It’s easier to open herself to discuss her doubts with a fellow learner, adding to the fact that they’ve just shared being buried alive together. Therefore, we are treated a glimpse of the little girl that Ahsoka is, the reservation she held regarding her master’s method, and the insight from which the attentive and observant Padawan who admires but is cautious of her master. She also understands his weakness in such a way that does not accuse or condescend, and she tasked herself to be his reminder. 

I don’t have the scripts for Season 2 to do a thorough search, but if my memory serves, the only other instant of ‘Anakin’ comes in 2.21 R2 Come Home when she introduces R2 to Master Plo as ‘Anakin’s droid’. Now usually she still refers to Anakin as ‘Master Skywalker’ despite her closeness with Plo. This is evident in 1.03 Shadow of Malevolence and 3.18 Citadel when she pleads with Plo to be on the mission. It could just be a writer’s slip but I can also factor in that Plo and Ahsoka were (kind of) alone in the war room then and hearing R2′s incoherent beeps unnerves Ahsoka a little too.

Season 3 

And here comes the glorious Mortis trilogy, my favourite arc. Simply put, this is another life or death situation. But Anakin is the first thing she worries about after hearing a threatening prophecy about herself, from herself! How much faith and selflessness do you need to have to worry about someone else now? My focus of analysis shifted to Ahsoka's future self's warning, (the future self’s nature is too complicated to put in a footnote here) 'Seeds of the dark side planted by your Master' - has she not been occupied with Anakin's safety, could she decipher the undertone that seeds of the dark need to be uprooted in Anakin? She admitted to Anakin's impulsiveness, but she also trusts him with her life. She almost idolizes him. Always in motion is the future, but Ahsoka might find herself reluctant to believe her Master would choose to fall from grace.

There are two more instances not mentioned in the gifset. The name calling is a bit more required by context that they carried little literature value. Both times she’s under a stressful life-or-death situation and away from Anakin’s presence.

‘(Evan Piell dying) I should find Anakin or Obi-Wan. They need to hear this.’ (3.20 Citadel Rescue)

Season 4

More deaths. The funeral scene is when Ahsoka shares a deep sorrow with her grandpa/father figure, one that she feels easier to share emotionally with. Herself is no doubt grieving for Obi-Wan, yet she is still faithfully fulfilling her duty to watch over Anakin. Her maturity is at the very least, catching up to Anakin's. The burden she has, worrying about Anakin when the horror of her mentor dying in her arms still hangs above her. And they have to be soon swung back into war. Amid the swirling, noisy mess of a loved one's passing, she still cares deeply. That is a strength inherent to Ahsoka that the Jedi teachinngs can only reinforce, but not fabricate.

Season 5

Okay okay okay, so we finally get to the star of the show: when Ahsoka calls Anakin by his first name in front of him for the very first time. Keep in mind that this is right after the Hardeen arc where Obi-Wan died and Anakin is ever closer to the dark side fueled by anger. Ahsoka was by his side the whole hunt. And before that, is the traumatising slavery arc. Anakin is not in a particularly emotionally healthy place right now. She also made a verbal promise to Obi-Wan in 4.11 Kidnapped to 'keep an eye on him'. Anakin is extra uptight and Ahsoka is extra cautious. After two years fighting alongside each other, they've grown into the comfortable sense of mutual respect and a guardian to each other, especially when Obi-Wan isn’t available to balance the mood. Ahsoka must make sure her Master is on the right path. To me the turning point was Anakin learning to let go and Ahsoka's return a season ago in 3.22 Wookiee Hunt. Ahsoka reassures Anakin of his capability as a teacher and expresses her gratitude, and Anakin accepting the credit he deserves is important to his growth as well. He is insecure about responsibility and has avoided it from the start. The Padawan Lost arc as a contrast to The Citadel in discussing Anakin's choices as a teacher will be a good topic, for another time.

*long sigh* where do I even begin in the Wrong Jedi arc. It's their Master/Apprentice relationship unraveling. Take this in a factual light, their status as Master/Apprentice deconstructs, but not their bond. They are evolving to beyond an uneven partnership to true friends. I want to introduce a Chinese word here, the topmost level of friendship (according to me anyway) - 知己 (lit. the one who knows me). Anakin and Ahsoka has already achieved the tier right below (手足 lit. arms and legs/comrades). While I think the rank of 手足 definitely applies to Anakin and Obi-Wan due to their impeccable coordination on the battlefield, I have my reservations about 知己 applying to them. I feel that they held back from one another more than Anakin and Ahsoka would emotionally. Anakin as a teacher has some really soft mentoring moments with Ahsoka where they discuss challenges and he encourages her. (Film.Teth, 1.19, 5.05) With Anakin and Obi-Wan, Anakin is reluctant to show his need for consul in his insecurities and feels shadowed by his awesome Master (not unlike Ahsoka's struggle) and Obi-Wan has that big brother sense of duty that prevents him from sharing with Anakin that his life is sometimes just miserable because it would worry him. Or that he would brush aside Anakin's sensitivity mistakenly believing he has as good a grasp on being liberal with Jedi teachings while Anakin takes things literally. I am certainly not as knowledgeable about their dynamic or rating any one relationship 'better' but it's difficult not to compare the two Master-Padawan duos.

Turning our focus back to Anakin and Ahsoka's sewer scene, Anakin probably knows she calls him by his first name to get his attention, and when she is worried or nervous. She called him ‘Anakin’ to make him listen, because she knows he will. She knows what to do but she is also hurt. She needs a friend, and she knows she would find one in Anakin Skywalker whether he is her Master or not. Ahsoka is also distancing herself from the Jedi Order and the system she distrusts. Besides herself, the next person she trusted most is Anakin. While their faith in each other is unshakable, their faith in the Council are not. It's only a little earlier that Ahsoka witnesses the flaws of the Council than Anakin and the two of them reacted very differently. (which is another good topic for another time)

In The Wrong Jedi, Ahsoka has already made up her mind in the courtroom. Even with the Council's excuses, Ahsoka only hesitated when her Master pleads. Her fingers hovered above his palm, then she has to force her eyes open to face him. 'I'm sorry, Master. But I'm not coming back.' As she wrapped both of her hands around his hardened mechanical fist, she could feel the tiny gears running, thumping. Her cheeks puffed and her nose sours, she turned away when what's done is done. She pays the final respect by calling him ‘Master’ one last time, the idol who she looked up to, the comrade who watched her back numerous times, the brother who taught and cared for her. All she has left, is the respect and all the memories of their time together as Master-Padawan that no one can take away, for him.

When she left the Temple, she calls to her friend, once finally free of worry. 'I know you believed in me, Anakin. And I'm grateful for that.' Trying to hide her regret, trying to ignore the disappointment in Anakin's plea, trying not to throw her arms around him for fear of not being able to leave him, alone, again. He needed to know he hasn’t failed Ahsoka, that she is grateful. Anakin Skywalker would always be her Master, and a friend when she needed him, and maybe now, he is less and could be more at the same time.

UPDATE: Taking my time and finished the gifset 3 hours later. Don’t even talk to me about Rebels, or the Ahsoka novel. We will cry about that when season 7 is over and we will cry a river.

[7:30am-13:30 17/4/2020] Took me 4 hours of writing and 1 hour of editing to write these 2000 words.  (No really minus the headings and numbers it adds up to the tidy digit of 2000) I came into this with the vaguest of ideas. I didn’t even have that much feels when the gifset idea came to me. I never envisioned it as a full-blown lit essay, and this time I took a little be more attention to the tone so it appears more academic than the rambling about trust. I did rant not the most coherently in Paragraph 2. See, High School? This is the kind of quality work we could’ve gotten if you’ve let me work on TV shows instead of films. Treat that Mortis!Ahsoka piece as a potential prep work for when one day I finally decided I have enough to blow the water up to a full tsunami. Haha, I also planted so many good topics to write about in this essay. Guess when I will get around to writing that when I hadn’t even cleared my debt for 7.08 Together Again yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  This became what it is in length because I just suddenly made up my mind halfway through the introduction to turn this into a detailed analysis of each season. It’s still only part of the growth of Anakin and Ahsoka’s relationship though, and almost exclusively on Ahsoka’s point of view. Her viewpoint is practically my major in Star Wars-ology anyway. But to understand this relationship fully, seeing from Anakin’s point of view is equally important, and such a parental viewpoint is something I am very familiar with being in the same seat when the Wrong Jedi arc first aired, and similarly a big sister myself. The Wrong Jedi part turning into a mini-fanfic is fun. It’s fun writing how (I want) Ahsoka thinks, to describe the sensations that were lost in the visual form. I made myself sad covering for the fact that I’m getting tired writing analyses for 2 hours straight. Anyway I really like the completeness of this essay assessing all seasons, 7 not withstanding. I’m glad I completed something like this before we plunge right into the Siege of Mandalore. I really really hope Filoni feeds me new material for an update to this essay. LIKE ANGSTY ONES BUT ALSO REALLY HAPPY ONE TO MAKE IT HURT EVEN MORE.
