Series rewatch thoughts - 1.17 “Hat Trick”

This is another episode where it kind of feels like it could be a horror. We have Mary Margaret running off into the night, with Emma following and running into a charming stranger, who lures her to his house, where he drugs her. She then discovers him sharpening knives (well, a scissors), finds her friend tied up in another room, and then the two of them try to escape, only the crazy guy with the sharp scissors catches them. There were a few quite dark episodes in the second half of this season, especially in the Storybrooke side of the story.

I can’t remember what the significance of allowing Mary Margaret to escape was, and why Regina was annoyed when she came back. I suppose she just wanted to make her look even guiltier. It’s funny that Rumple acted like he didn’t know what was going on, and then it turned out he had masterminded it. I think that all becomes clearer in the next few episodes, so I’ll talk more about their shenanigans then. It’s kinda sweet that Rumple didn’t take offence to Henry not wanting to talk in front of him, even though he already knew what had happened.

Jefferson’s pretty intense. I am glad he was reunited with Grace in the end. He’s another example of a parent who makes a wrong call and it costs them their child. It’s the same thing we see with Rumple and Wish Hook too. One wrong decision can cost so much. And, like Bae and Alice, Grace is a very sweet child, who doesn’t deserve this. At least she was with people who cared for her, though. Also, Tiera’s little sister, aw :)

I love the role they gave the Mad Hatter. The idea of using his hat to jump realms is cool, though they change the rules later. In season six, Zelena is able to use his hat (presumably a new version of it - maybe all the ones he made in Storybrooke now work) to save people from Oz, so the two in, two out rule gets ditched later.

Jefferson’s lines to Emma are cool as well. The idea that everyone wants a magical solution, but they refuse to believe in magic is another way of saying that everyone complains about stuff, but they won’t do anything to make it better. Also, I love what he says about the realms being infinite and touching each other. That suggests to me that Regina didn’t bring all the realms to Storybrooke: just the ones they had encountered through the book, but there are many, many others, some of which RumBelle visited, one of which Gideon ended up studying in, some of which he’s travelling through before he makes it back to Storybrooke :)

And Jefferson talks about holding conflicting realities in your head being enough to drive you mad, which is foreshadowing for Alice in season seven, because that’s exactly what happens to her.

Speaking of Alice, I like season seven’s Wonderland better, even though we only saw a tiny bit of it.

And speaking of magical solutions, Jefferson is the first person to hint that Emma has magic. And it’s interesting that he disappears when he falls out the window. I wonder where he went. I think we find out later, but I can’t remember how that played out. I know he turns up again anyway. So maybe Emma made the hat work?

The idea that you don’t abandon family is such a huge one. So much happens as a result of characters either leaving their family behind, or choosing not to leave their family behind. I thought it was interesting that Regina seemed sympathetic to Jefferson about promising Grace he’d be home for tea, but then she sort of threw it back at him about abandoning family. Regina definitely has a soft spot for family.

And the Regina/Queen of Hearts dynamic is interesting. Obviously they hadn’t decided that she was Regina’s mother yet. They play it like they’re each threatened by the other’s power, but it doesn’t take much to tweak it a bit and have Cora be Regina’s mother. It’s interesting that the Queen of Hearts wasn’t able to leave Wonderland. Or maybe she could leave, but she couldn’t get beyond the room of doors, which is what the hat seemed designed to do.

I love Emma opening up to Mary Margaret about considering her family, and we see that she’s starting to believe in the stories in the book as well.

Jefferson: Stories. Stories? What’s a story? When you were in high school, did you learn about the Civil War?

Emma: Yeah, of course.

Jefferson: How? Did you read bout it, perchance, in a book? How is that any less real than any other book?

Emma: History books are based on history.

Jefferson: And storybooks are based on what, imagination? Where does that come from? It has to come from somewhere. You know what the issue is with this world? Everyone wants a magical solution for their problem, and everyone refuses to believe in magic. Now get it to work.

Emma: Here’s the thing, Jefferson. This is it. This is the real world.”

Jefferson: A real world. How arrogant are you to think yours is the only one? There are infinite more. You have to open your mind. They touch one another, pressing up in a long line of lands, each just as real as the last. All have their own rules. Some have magic. Some don’t. And some need magic…like this one. And that’s where you come in. You and your friends are not leaving here until you make my hat. Until you get it to work.

Emma: And then what?

Jefferson: Then I go home.

“Hat Trick” - While searching for a missing Mary Margaret, Emma is kidnapped by a man whose affinity for hats has him teetering on the edge of madness. Meanwhile, viewers will be transported outside of the fairytale land that was for the first time when the Evil Queen persuades a skillful man of magic to come work for her one last time and travel to Wonderland in order to help steal something from the Queen of Hearts, on “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, MARCH 25 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
