Papa… if I find a way for you to get rid of the power, a way that doesn’t kill you or hurt me, would you do it?

Proposal: Give every player one Isekai Protagonist swap per Life Series.
This is both (evidently) funny as fuck, AND let creators invite friends onto the series without committing to them Officially Joining.
If someone has to be absent a second week they have to either pull a Grian and just be AFK or their substitute is Oli Orionsound. Their choice.
Some ideas for substitutes:
Joe Hills for Scar. Everyone assumes this will make Scar less deadly. It does not.
Zedaph for Joel. The entire server is covered in landmines and Joel has lost half his life by the end of this.
Doc for Jimmy. Likely to die horribly in funny ways and make threats they can't cash about it.
Fwhip for Impulse. If he claims he has a cold & doesn't talk with Skizz, he could get away with pretending to be Impulse for half an ep imo
Mumbo for Grian. Obviously.
Iskall for Etho. He hasn't played in vanilla for months, so a good match for Etho's knowledge of 1.19
Shubble for Scott. I'm imagining she can do a hilariously good imitation of his speech patterns, and an absolutely atrocious imitation of his voice.
False for Pearl. Equal wet cat energy, except even more deadly.
Pix for Ren (assuming he returns as planned next season). Ren's here, and he's GOING to make a narrative happen.
Gem for Bdubs. I want to see her mercilessly kill Etho multiple times, bc actual Bdubs will never let him live it down.
xB for Cleo. I want to see Cleo get 7 bow kills in a row. Also want to see xB's best British accent

Monday is President's Day in the US, which means if you work in parts of the government or banking system you might have the day off work. If you're in retail, you're probably working a sale. Sorry about that. In honor of the day, though, let us know about fics set in the White House! Reblog or reply with a link to your favorite Presidential fics!!
Tumblr media
Old Business:
Fishing For Treasures - This weekend is FFT weekend here at the Pond, and this month's theme is SMUT!! Since we got almost 250 links sent to us, and we can only queue 50/day, this weekend will end sometime on Wednesday. Enjoy!! 🤣
#TweetFicTues prompts - Since we missed the last two weeks, we've got three sets of prompts for you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Business:
Weekend Giveaways in the Discord server - The past few weeks, Admin Michelle has been cleaning out her collections of random things in her office by giving them away! We have now added a new channel just for giveaways! This weekend, you could win a near-pristine copy of the EW Ultimate Guide to Supernatural edition! All you have to do is drop a link in the giveaways channel for a fic that features the bond between Dean and Sam. Can be Wincest or gen fic, just as long as the bond between them is central to the story!
Tumblr media
Manta Rays in the Discord server - This week, Manta Rays Arthur and Spencer will be spending time in the Discord server chatting with you! Keep an eye out for announcement posts with exact dates and times, or take a look at our calendar. (You can also add our calendar to your Google calendar by clicking this link.)

SPN Rewatch: Fanfic Edition - Next weekend we are having another chat in our series rewatch, and we'll be discussing 1.19 Provenance and 1.20 Dead Man's Blood. Sam kisses a girl! John returns! Vampires exist! So much to talk about!!
Writing Sprints - Our sprint room is open all the time to anyone who wants to sprint, but next weekend you can win prizes for sprinting! Since a few have asked, writing sprints are where we set a timer, for usually 15-20 minutes but that is up to those sprinting, and you just write. You compete to see who can write the most words. They don't have to be polished words, just words on the page/screen. Some of our members use it kind of like ADHD body-doubling, even if there's no one else around to sprint with them! Competitive sprints mean you get to win prizes, too! If you have any questions about sprints, feel free to ask.
Angel Fish Awards - February is almost over, which means the monthly raffle deadline is approaching! Every fic rec you submit is one entry into the drawing, and there is no limit to how many you can submit! Spread some love and win prizes, too!! Here's a link to January's Awards, and more info about how it all works can be found at this link here.
Tumblr media
(Divider by @glygriffe!)
That's all for this week! To see all Pond events, and also other SPN-related things like conventions and online concerts, check out our Google calendar! Click here for a static view in Eastern US/Canada time (desktop only, no mobile app access, sadly), and click here to add our calendar to your own Google calendar! Deeper Depths Brings Deeper Feelings
Red's Sculk AU
Takes place in-between 1.18.2 and 1.19 with mentions of 1.16
Tumblr media
It was dark, wet, and cramped.
Her wings were tightly pressed against her back to avoid the possibility of the Elytram's wings scrapping against the top of the cave.
Red had been down here for a few hours; The lantern previously attached to her hip now held tightly in hand, lighting the area in front of her.
["So you're just going down there alone!? Are you insane?"]
Her wings twitch with barely concealed ire.
["We don't know what's down there-" "Exactly, we don't know, which Is why I'm not risking others getting hurt." The mothling's fingers curl in agitation.]
With lips twitching downwards, Red's hooves dig into the gravel and dirt as she marches forward through the cave. She doesn't have the time to be distracted by unnecessary events; it was only going to be a quick trip anyhow.
Her job, as a scientist and an Admin, was one she took seriously.
According to the report, there was a sighting of strange fungi growing out of the cracks in the deeper part of the caves. Red's immediate thought was this was caused by the strange new generation that's been occurring across worlds; information gained of course from the Hub.
While she hadn't heard of a fungus, it wasn't completely off the table with how special mushroom biomes seemed to now be present within the nether; as if the nether wasn't dangerous enough with the new generation there.
As much as Red wished to just send one of her eyes down here, she wasn't particularly in the mood of having to take the time and energy creating another one if anything happened. Better her than a feeble extension of her, she supposed.
["You aren't invincible, you can get hurt just like the rest of us!"]
She breathes. She needs to focus.
Her talons scratch against the base of her horns, relaxing only for a minute before stopping.
Because she feels it before she sees it.
Souls. Souls upon Souls packed in a small space, almost familiar to a mob farm if it weren't for the sheer agony that resonated from the dark, starry block. (Like the spider lily's now wilting in her garden.)
Her wings, tight against her shoulders, visibly convulse before settling. She blinks, watching the dark block blink back at her.
(It reminds her of the void in a way, of the eyes of her species' counterpart)
Red shakes her head, forcing her feet to move forward, her hooves creating that familiar click-
SCREECH
"Aa-" The teeth of her wings crack against the roof of the cave as wide, blood-red eyes stare at the fading cyan ovals from the block in front of her. Frozen; she waits, glancing down at her own keratin covered feet and glancing back up towards the very loud noisemaker.
Carefully, she puts her other hoof in front of the other after meticulously dislodging the points of her wings from the cave roof, making sure they didn't click against the cold stone. Nothing.
'Alright. Noise sensitive.'
Creeping up towards it, she stops only a meter away from the block. Peering at the top of it, her face contorts into a grimace, her suspicions (Not really suspicions, her mind supplies. She could practically sense it.) were confirmed. Two visible souls could be seen swirling in the dark, glistening pool, surrounded by what looked like bone.
Mentally sending the poor things a wish of safe returning to the beyond, she summons her netherite pick as silently as she could before quickly dismantling the block, only jumping slightly at the sound of clicking.
A small, half block of dark cyan…whatever, had four appendages at the top of it that swayed back and forth. The dark cyan fungi beneath it was far more spotted than the rest of the odd blocks she's seen.
Red squints, and chirps, watching the spires of fungus respond in kind with more clicks and movement. Quickly, she summons the book and quill she had brought with her. She wasn't sure what to call the odd blocks, so she simply settled for "The Cyan Cave Fungi". It'd do for now.
["You could get seriously hurt, would it kill you to just put your work aside for a second!"]
Carefully, she continues down the cave, finding more of the Fungus across the walls in concentrated amounts; The Elytram resisted the urge to run her talons against the walls, only fully pulling away as she spots an opening at her right.
She could only sputter as her eyes settle on the sprawling ruins before her.
"What in the void-"
SCREECH
Red flinches, her head snapping towards the noisemaker only a few blocks below her. Her wings droop behind her, crimson tipped feathers brushing against the deepslate floor.
Slowly, she made her way down the small slope towards the odd city; Her hooves had almost got caught on the small cracks of the stone, if not for a quick, careful opening of her wings.
It would've been fine If not for the very loud block, once again, yelling at her. A sharp 'Crack' had been her only cue that she'd fell before the searing pain begun to eat at the Elytram's wing. "⎓⚍ᓵꖌ! ↸ᔑᒲリ ╎ℸ !"
Then begun the cacophony of sheer noise, dozens of noisemakers going off all at once, and she feels it.
Rising quickly from the ground, taller than both her and the pillar beside her, emerges what she can call nothing but a beast.
Before it can fully lift itself up from beneath the surface, she picks herself up from the floor and books it, her wing seizing in pain as it jostles and drags against the floor; Black feathers tipped with Red getting torn from their proper places as the beast slams its fist against the wall beside her, sending her falling once more down a slope.
"∴⍑ᔑℸ ̣… Are you…?" She heard its heart beat, against her own false one. The hybrid could only barely dodge the soundwave it released, her now far broken wing getting pinned between her and the wall behind her.
Faintly, she could feel something crawl against her hand and face as her sight begun to fade; Hearing the beast, all she could do was laugh.
Oh. Oh, how Red loathed being wrong.

Wip Wednesday: The Return of MY SOULMATE MADE A DATE FOR ME AND OUR BOYFRIEND.. | Empires SMP S2 1.19
It's coming, folks. My infamous wip, the tango/jimmy/fwhip one from the first day of the crossover, the sequel to the the first mcyt i published, the one I think about every day and feel bad about not finishing (b/c i can't write tango pov anymore). My dear @that-tall-queer-bassist is almost done with the story! I gave them my partial draft + outline, and they are giving you a story.
I can't make any promises on when it will be out because there's a lot going on... but if you want to reread the first fic and the wip, it wouldn't be a bad idea!
MY EX STOLE MY SOULMATE.. | Empires SMP S2 1.19
MY SOULMATE MADE A DATE FOR ME AND OUR BOYFRIEND.. | Empires SMP S2 1.19
With the combined help of Shubble and Impulse, he started work on the wondrous plan, Get His Boyfriends To Talk Feelings And Then Fuck. The Boyfriends™ had mixed reactions to Tango’s secret keeping. Fwhip seemed endlessly curious, always trying to pry information from Tango in subtle and obvious ways. Jimmy seemed impatient about it, but he told Tango that while the anticipation was awful, he loved good surprises, and Tango promised them both that it wasn’t a prank.
Soon.

LOUISE/DAMON + 'JUST FRIENDS'; louise and damon (mostly louise) trying to convince everyone they're just friends
1.12 UNPLEASANTVILLE
"Don't project your feelings for Vivienne onto Louise. I don't want you messing with her head." Stefan told him. Damon's jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed into a glare at his brother. "I'm not projecting my feelings onto her. I can assure you I know that they are completely different people." he said. "You know what Vivienne was to me. Louise is my…friend." "Your friend." Stefan repeated not quite believing him.
1.13 CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED
"But, I don't understand why you would offer to help." Louise looked at her sceptically. "I didn't offer. He asked and I agreed." She let out a sigh before she added. "Besides, Damon's my friend." It was now Elena's turn to sigh. "I know, okay. I know you and Damon are friends or whatever but I just don't want to see you get hurt."
1.16 THERE GOES THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
"You know, I actually have other friends besides you guys." "Like who? Damon?" Caroline snickered and Louise's lips pressed into a thin line as she didn't respond. The blonde stopped short in the hallway, eyes narrowing at the brunette. "You have plans with Damon?! Seriously, what's up with you two? I thought you said you weren't dating?" Louise shook her head. "No, we're not. It's just dinner between two friends." Air quoting the words as she spoke, Caroline mimicked Louise. "It's just dinner between two friends."
1.19 MISS MYSTIC FALLS
"Are you finally gonna tell me what's up with you and Damon?" "I've told you before we're friends-" Louise stopped as Caroline spoke mocking in unison with her saying 'we're friends'. The blonde rolled eyes and Louise frowned in annoyance. "Cut the crap, Lou." Caroline said. "Are practically walking in on your make out section with Damon a few weeks ago, there's something going on between you two. And nothing you said will convince me otherwise."
2.01 THE RETURN
"Louise, you're young - I get it." Jenna sighed. "But you can't let some pretty boy sway you merely on looks. You're still in school and he is a grown man. I just don't want to see you get hurt." "Damon and I are just friends." Louise assured her. "I've seen the way he looks at you. Whether you want to be friends or not, he wants more." Jenna explained. "I know his type. I've dated his type." "We're friends." The brunette stated once again.

so like. i don’t think dsmp should have a reboot in terms of like. how reboots typically are. same story same characters just told in a ‘better’ way now that they know better.
i wouldn’t mind the title of dsmp 2 or whatever related to ‘dream smp’ though.
i think it would be fun if they made another server with all the same people, or at least most of the same people (whomever wants to return), and just. started fresh, completely fresh. new characters, new lore, new story. completely and utterly. not a sequel either or at least not a complete sequel. no one referencing events of the dsmp (unless, maybe for a handful of characters it applies to their lore if they chose).
like the idea of a “reboot” with rehashing the same characters and story and lore is bad.
but if they simply just make a new server on 1.19 and invite all the people that is already on the server and go ‘play and make stuff up as you go’ then that is absolutely fine, and i actually encourage it?
because a lot of the newer people, like eryn or cpk or aimsey, and even some of the moderately new like hannah and boomer and foolish and puffy, etc, will then get to be there from the beginning, and have more of a chance to story tell, if they wish to. they’ll also have more time to make things their own instead of trying to shoehorn in things to an already active and ongoing plot.
i think in this sense, if they make a new server that will be fine and okay, even if some peoples’ stories from the dsmp end up not getting told? its overall their choice with how they want to continue their characters, and that includes not at all, and if they chose that they’d rather start something new, that could be fun.
besides having new characters with new stories and plots being told through the minecraft medium can be SO fun.
we see this with so many other minecraft based fandoms, how they do “reboots” without being related to prior ones, or seasons if you will. think of the last life/third life/double life series, where they all have lore and stories and stuff but it’s reset, for the most part, every season. then they tell something different.
like. honestly a reboot or season 2 could be VERY GOOD if it’s actually a blank slate, or like 98% a blank slate (again some characters i think could benefit or have ways to be connected to the dsmp as their backstory and have it work).
i think you guys are just really scared of change and things ending up horribly.
if, and i mean if, the reboot is how i’ve said as some sort of blank slate server where these guys get to do stuff all over but new with different characters, it will ultimately be good.
the dream smp as a server has been ongoing for 2+ years. some of these people haven’t even gotten to explore or play on the server due to lore. think of cc!dream. he had to do a whole out of character stream after the prision break because he genuinely hadn’t seen most the builds that happened since he’d been imprisioned, and he wanted to see them. let alone actually just getting to play minecraft with friends.
the dsmp has become so lore heavy that it is story being told through minecraft, not minecraft with a story being told.
they don’t get to mess or fool about much anymore, and again i think a reboot would let them be able to do this.
we’d get that nostalgic feel of how casual rp was on the dsmp during 2020, we’ll get to enjoy new characters and immerse ourselves in a new story with new lore.
this is a good thing, i think. i genuinely don’t think most the cc’s on the server would even be for a total reboot. a lot seem to want to be done with the dsmp story like, 6 months ago.
i think a lot want to do new things, so a “reboot” will probably just be a season 2 type deal with a new story, new characters, new world, etc. and i am excited for that.

Ok, so, one of @moringmark‘s comics (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOwlHouse/comments/vl5c68/eda_taught_her_well/) gave me a through: exactly how many crimes has Luz committed in the show? I went through the episode list, and just tried to list out the ones I remembered, but holy cow, it was still so much!
1.1: A Lying Witch and a Warden
Breaking and entering (breaking into the Conformatorium)
Theft (Stealing King’s crown and Francois from the contraband locker)
Starting a prison riot
Assaulting a government official (Warden wrath)
1.2: Witches Before Wizards
Accessory to Murder (When Eda ate Adegast)
1.3: I Was a Teenage Abomination
Trespassing (into Hexide despite knowing she wasn’t allowed)
Assisting in academic dishonesty (Idk if this is a crime. Please correct me if I’m wrong)
1.4 : The Intruder
Use of wild magic and being a wild witch. I’m not gonna record every instance, because this applies for basically the whole rest of the show.
1.6: Hooty's Moving Hassle
Disturbing the Peace
Destruction of private property (Tibbles’ night market stand)
1.7: Lost in Language
Breaking & Entering (into the Bonesborough Public Library with Ed and Em.)
Vandalism (She wrote in a book to try and save Amity.)
1.8: Once Upon a Swap
Destruction of Government Property (the wall of the Bonesborough police precinct)
1.9: Something Ventured, Someone Framed
Destruction of public property (The detention room)
1.13: The First Day
Studying multiple tracks at once (again, idk if this is actually a crime, but it seems like it would be. Though if it is, it could be principal Bump in trouble instead.)
1.15: Understanding Willow
Entering the mind of another person (Eda outright says it’s “partially illegal”)
1.18: Agony of a Witch
Breaking & Entering
Attempted theft of government property (The healing hat)
1.19: Young Blood, Old Souls
Stepping on grass (Realistically, I know this was a gag, but she did get arrested for it, so I’m counting it.)
Multiple counts of assaulting government officials (Warden Wrath, various guards, Lilith, Emperor Belos, and Kikimora.)
Attempted Murder (She went for Belos’ head. I call lethal intent.)
Prison break (Broke Eda, King, and Lilith out of their cell, preventing their execution.)
2.1: Separate Tides
Obstruction of a law enforcement officer (Lied to hunter about having killed the selkidomus, stopping him from succeeding in his mission.)
2.2: Escaping Expulsion
Aiding in an illegal weapons trade (Hunter did come in at the end and tell the Blights that the Abomaton were considered a private army, and Luz had tried to help sell them)
2.6: Hunting Palismen
Assaulting a government official (Yeeting Hunter off his airship)
Obstruction of a law enforcement officer (by refusing to give hunter his staff to prove his identity to his subordinates, and also by drugging Kikimora with the sleeping mist to keep her from returning to the castle with the palismen)
Theft (the palismen, and also some added on livestock theft with Kiki’s hand dragon)
2.10: Yesterday's Lie
Aiding & Abetting (Got Vee to steal the Hexes Hold’em cards from the museum office)
Acomplice to Fraud (It’s not identity theft now that Vee has Luz’s blessing, but she’s still pretending to be someone she’s not and benefiting from it.)
2.11: Follies at the Coven Day Parade
Disturbing the peace (crashing the parade with mist glyph circles and siccing Hooty on the guards to cause pandemonium)
Aiding a kidnapping (doing the above crime to knowingly help Eda kidnap Raine)
Resisting arrest (Luz and Amity fighting back against Kikimora at the docks)
2.14: Reaching Out
Participating in an underground fighting ring (The Bonesborough Brawl)
2.16: Hollow Mind
Entering the mind of another person (Belos)
Espionage (To get information against Belos)
2.19: O Titan, Where Art Thou
Impersonating a guard (to break into the precinct)
Theft (Francois and the Palistrom wood)
2.20: Clouds on the Horizon
Impersonating a guard (sneak through Blight Industries)
2.21: King's Tide
Assaulting the head of state (Belos)
Attempted assassination (Belos. She may not have wanted him to die - she wanted him to stop the draining spell - but the coven brand would have killed him, and she knew it.)
In conclusion:

So I’m done with my season one rewatch. I feel like I need to make a little list of my own.
Favorite Episodes
1.07: What Are Little Girls Made of? - A good first exploration of the "Are robots humans?" question, plus Andrea was hot.
1.22: Space Seed - Holy fuck, Khan is just brilliant.
1.21: The Return of the Archons - Really nice costumes. Interesting exploration of the theme of individuality versus stability
1.26: Errand of Mercy - Awesome costumes, commander Khor and a great twist at the end
1.28: The City on the Edge of Forever - A classic that needs no explanation.
Best bad Episodes
1.04: The Naked Time - Pure gold in terms of the different reactions to the disease.
1.15: Shore Leave - The fight scenes were a bit too long, but the episode still stands out for its sheer insanity.
1.19: Tomorrow Is Yesterday - Humorous, Kirk totally flirts with that pilot, but a weird ending.
1.18: Arena - Despite some slow moments, the Gorn and the surprisingly thoughtfull ending make it absolutly great.
1.25: The Devil in the Dark - The Horta. Spock being protective. Bones nailing it. Awesome.
1.29: Operation — Annihilate! - Rubber brain cell aliens and great hurt/comfort dynamics.
Really bad episodes
1.02: Charlie X - Ugh to the implications and handling of assault.
1.05: The Enemy Within - Again the implied assault. They killed the unicorn dog. Also surprisingly dull.
1.20: Court Martial - Boring. Weird anti-technology message for a sci-fi series
1.24: This Side of Paradise - I’m not sure where to put this. Leila forcing Spock into a relationship via spores and then having him declare that he was actually happy was unsettling. The message of productivity being more important than happiness also didn’t sit right.
1.27: The Alternative Factor - Sooo boring and forgeteable.

A leading discount supermarket in Germany has raised the prices of a selection of its products to reflect their real cost on people’s health and the environment.
In a week-long experiment in all 2,150 branches of the Penny chain, a range of nine products, mainly dairy and meat, will be priced at what experts from two universities have deemed to be their true cost, in relation to their effect on soil, climate, water use and health.
The “wahre Kosten” or “real costs” campaign has seen the price of wiener sausages rise from €3.19 to €6.01, mozzarella go up by 74% to €1.55, and fruit yoghurt increase by 31% from €1.19 to €1.56.
The awareness promotion week is taking place in conjunction with academics from the Nuremberg Institute of Technology and the University of Greifswald, and was triggered by the conviction among consumer researchers that price tags in supermarkets in no way reflect the true environmental or long-term health costs of producing the foodstuffs and getting them on to retailers’ shelves.
Included are a range of foods from cheese and other dairy products to processed meats such as sausages, as well as vegan meat replacements such as vegan schnitzels (which were given a moderate 5% increase). Wiener sausages and the popular maasdamer cheese, which has risen by 94% to €4.84, are among the items to go up most in price. Regarding the cheese, the scientists calculated hidden costs of 85 cents for climate-harming emissions such as methane and CO2, as well as 76 cents for damage to the soil from intensive farming and animal feed production, 63 cents for the effect of pesticides used, including their impact on the health of farmers, as well as 10 cents for pollution of groundwater through the use of fertiliser.
The discounter has said it will donate the excess proceeds it makes from the sales, without commenting on whether it was prepared to take a knock in profits. The charity Zukunftsbauer or Future Farmer, which supports family-run farms in Alpine regions, many of which are increasingly struggling to survive amid low returns or sometimes even making losses on their produce, will be the beneficiary.

The Void: A Hypothesized Explanation of Ancient Cities' Reinforced Deepslate Structures
Abstract:
The structures of reinforced deepslate in ancient cities are attempts to recreate End portals by a society who lacked the knowledge to do so. In this process they made contact with a new dimension called the Void, and life forms known as Sculk and the Warden. Three hypotheses on the relationship between the Ancients, the Sculk, and the Warden are presented herein: The Invasive Species hypothesis, the Haywire hypothesis, and the Hubris hypothesis.
Facts we know:
All of these facts are either freely found in-game or confirmed by the Devs. Most of my developer sources come from wattles’ “Everything” videos about the Warden and Reinforced Deepslate
Reinforced deepslate only spawns in portal-like shapes in Ancient Cities, and like bedrock and end portal frames is unable to be mined or moved. (Implication: This is the shape it is supposed to be, and it does not have another use)
The rectangular shape has been referenced as a “portal” in an earlier snapshot of the game. The environment feature named “small portal statue” in a 1.19 snapshot is a miniature replica of the reinforced deepslate rectangle and replaces the burning soul sand with candles. (Implication: it is intended to be a portal, and the soul sand is important to the structure.)
The sides of the deepslate portal’s structure are reminiscent of the Warden’s antennae, as well as the earlike shapes of earlier Warden designs.
A “warden” is one who guards or watches an area. A prison warden, for example, stops prisoners from escaping.
The blue glow inside the Warden’s chest has been confirmed by the devs to be souls.
The Warden is summoned by the Sculk and by noise.
Sculk spreads when a creature is killed near a skulk catalyst (and drops XP), and sculk itself drops XP. (Implication: xp = souls, and the sculk feeds on and contains souls)
“Skulk” is a verb meaning to sneak or lurk (Like what one does when trying to avoid the Warden)
Minecraft’s overworld contains ruined Nether portals and partial End portals.
The game has a history of providing overworld hints to accessing other dimensions or bosses.
There is a hint to summoning the Wither in the 2x2 painting “Wither” available in-game.
There is a painting of the same size named “The Void” of an angel praying into a black void alongside pixelated fire.
Ruined Nether portals always spawn with nether materials and provide in-game hints to accessing the Nether.
End portals always spawn partially completed with Eyes of Ender.
A completed End portal displays a starry void on the other side.
The End is populated by a powerful being with a breath weapon, and many creatures that will attack if they make eye contact.
The deepslate portals are surrounded by blue-fire-burning soul sand.
Sculk blocks, dark blue/black with twinkling blue dots, are reminiscent of a starry void.
The Warden is a powerful being with a sonic weapon, and will attack if it hears something.
The Warden cannot see, and summons darkness.
The Warden drops a skulk catalyst upon death, as well as the same amount of experience a skulk catalyst would drop if broken.
The Warden is “summoned”, not “born” or “spawned”.
The Warden’s summoning animation and despawning animation involve it digging up out of the ground and returning into it.
Just like many of the other structures of minecraft, we do not know who built the ancient cities or deepslate portals.
Just like many of the other structures of minecraft, we do not know why they are gone.
Pulling it together:
Just as the Ruined Nether Portals and partial End portals are hints to other dimensions, so is the reinforced deepslate structure inside the Ancient City. This dimension is the dimension of souls called the Void, and was either created or discovered by the architects of the Ancient City as they tried to either recreate or access the End. The people of the ancient city (the Ancients) came sometime after the people who created the End portals. They tried to recreate the End portal, and in doing so the Warden escaped the Void.
Accessing the Void may require filling a deepslate portal with sculk, or filling a deepslate portal with soul sand and then using a sculk catalyst to turn it into sculk. This will make it resemble the starry void of an End portal. This is also why the Warden always drops one sculk catalyst- so that if you have broken all the sculk and catalysts, there is still a way to get more sculk.
The Void is a dimension of souls, and has no light or very little light. Perhaps it is connected to enchanting, which requires experience, or is what gives life to undead like zombies and skeletons. Perhaps the entities therein are not able to die, and must only be avoided. Perhaps it is a sort of afterlife, connected to the angel-like being in the Void painting.
The Lore:
I have several hypotheses for what the Warden and the Sculk are, and why the cities are empty.
1. Invasive Species Hypothesis
Sculk is an invasive species, and the Warden is how it spreads. (Non-sentient Warden)
Consider a mushroom: What we think of as a "mushroom" is only a tiny portion of a fungus, a reproductive structure that is drastically different from the main organism and only serves to grow and then spread spores. The Warden is a reproductive structure of the Sculk- not only does it carry sculk catalysts, it kills any nearby creatures therefore allowing sculk to spread. The souls in the Warden's chest are its power source, allowing it much more motility than its sedentary life stages.
The Warden's unheard-of strength and aggression can be likened to the way animals are affected by the rabies virus: whatever makes it more likely to successfully spread (the sculk/the virus), it will do. Animals affected by rabies drool excessively to increase the chance of an infected bite and become hydrophobic because water would wash away the virus and prevent it from spreading. They become uncharacteristically docile and then uncharacteristically aggressive as a method of getting closer to other animals to spread the disease to them. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear. Even once the animal dies, rabies can still be contracted from its body.
The Warden wants to kill everything, because sculk spreads when something dies. It hits hard, and if it cannot kill you by hitting it will still pierce through your armor and enchantments with its sonic blast. The Warden is intended to be 100% fatal once it appears, because that is evolutionarily beneficial to the sculk. Even when dies, it drops a sculk catalyst to create more sculk. Much like many plants will design their seeds so that animals or the wind will carry their seeds further away, the Warden's motility and instinct to hunt and chase its prey ensure that when it finally dies, the new area of sculk will likely be far from the parent block.
The Ancients didn't know what they were unleashing- once it appeared in the middle of their civilization, the Warden destroyed them and continued to spread its sculk. The Ancients deactivated the portal themselves in an attempt to prevent anyone else from making the same mistake.
Unanswered questions within this theory: Why did the Ancients try to make their own End portal instead of finding and completing one? Why is the shape of the deepslate portal and the design of chiseled deepslate reminiscent of the Warden, if it was only summoned accidentally?
2. The Haywire Hypothesis
The Warden came from the Void and goes haywire (Once-sentient or partially-sentient Warden)
2a. The Warden goes haywire because it can’t get back to the Void
This theory paints the Warden as a sort of out-of-control prison warden, with an original intent much like an Iron Golem. I already theorized the Void is soul-themed because of the soul sand, souls in the Warden's chest, and the way that sculk feeds on and drops XP. I hypothesize the Void is a sort of afterlife, which is not supposed to be escaped once it is entered.
The Warden's job was originally similar to Cerberus: to prevent souls from leaving its domain and protect the souls within its domain from intruders. It held the escaped souls in its chest until it could return to its domain.
Somehow something broke down in this system, and the Warden couldn’t get back to the Void. This may have been the Ancients closing or destroying the portal themselves. Perhaps the portal was one-way, and only accessible from the Void. Perhaps the Ancients fled into the portal, and locked the Wardens out in the overworld. Perhaps souls are the only things that make sound in the Void, and the Warden went haywire and began attacking the Ancients the moment it crossed into our dimension that is full of creatures who make noise, prompting them to shut down the portal.
2b. The Warden is working exactly as intended, and just appears to be malfunctioning because souls work differently in the Void and the Overworld
The Warden was a guardian of souls in the Void as before. The Void-based depictions of souls, the Warden and the Sculk, are blue and solid. While this is reflected in the blue fire of soul sand and soul soil, XP doesn’t reflect that at all. XP is fleeting, green and yellow, unable to become solid and only able to be temporarily captured in bottles. In the overworld, it is mostly used as a power source (Enchanting). When a creature dies, all the XP it gained in life spills onto the ground. The XP from the death of a player, a fish, and a creeper are indistinguishable.
When a creature dies near a sculk catalyst, that xp is absorbed and becomes more sculk. Sculk is storage, or a physical form of souls. Consider a Void where when creatures die, their souls exit in one cohesive piece instead of being shattered into XP. In such a dimension, a physical body is a tool to possess instead of the only thing holding together one’s life force. In such a dimension, a prison Warden whose job it is to stop certain souls from escaping would want to remove the soul from its body the same way that police would want to remove a fleeing suspect from their vehicle. When you remove someone from a car, the car doesn’t die. It just needs someone else to get inside to activate it. In a car crash, the damage to the car is not felt by the driver- they are separate entities.
The Warden’s job is not to kill or harm or destroy, just to capture and restrain. It’s not the Warden’s fault that when we break in this dimension, so does our soul.
Unanswered questions within this theory: If XP = souls, why do we gain XP from smelting metal and mining minerals? Who created the Warden? Why is it so intent on restraining these souls? Why do the souls in its chest retain their form in the overworld, when no other “soul” does so?
3. The Hubris Hypothesis
The Warden came from the Void to punish the Ancients and prevent anyone else from accessing the Void (Sentient Warden)
This theory reads the most like a cohesive legend.
The Ancients had a powerful civilization. They dug deep within the Overworld, built elaborate cities full of riches, and were able to access the Nether. They wanted to access the End as well, but the existing End portals did not fit their needs. Perhaps the portals were too small, and they wanted to bring creatures like the Ender Dragon or sail their End Ships into our world. Perhaps the End portals were too far away, and they wanted to have a convenient doorway within their existing cities. Or, perhaps, they sought to go further and discover a new dimension- a world of souls that would erase the divide between life and death.
They built their portal of immovable, nigh-unbreakable, artificial material. They filled it with fossilized souls and sacrificed many creatures until their life essence turned the soul sand into a flat, starry void. A doorway to another realm, just like the one leading to the End. A boundary that was not meant to be crossed.
Instead of ships and dragons, instead of souls, what came through this doorway was punishment. The Ancients had reached too far and had taken power for their own that was never intended for mortals. The Warden destroyed the Ancients, and destroyed what it could of the portal. To this day it stalks the long-abandoned cities, destroying all who might stumble upon the portal and attempt to learn the same forbidden secrets that died with the Ancients.
Unanswered questions within this theory: Who decides what boundary is “too far” to cross? Are there gods of this world? Would they be the same beings that speak in the End Poem? What reason would they have to so violently keep some realms secret and inaccessible?
Conclusion
I meant to try and connect some loose thoughts and ended up with over 2,200 words of analysis. I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of this doesn't come to pass or ends up never clarified at all, but I'd stake money on that structure being a portal, and soul sand and a sculk catalyst being important to accessing it. What do you all think?

Flower Correspondence
Minecraft has an array of flowers that can be used as ingredients for spells!
Originally the game started out with only two flowers which are the dandelion and the poppy (which was originally called a rose at the time).
Now, as of 1.19, it's grown to 17 different flowers and all that can be located in an array of different biomes.
This list will detail the dye that can be crafted from them, and the meaning of the flowers themselves so you can figure out which can suit the sort of spell you want to use them in.
Note: I am also in the belief that the flowers can also be used to stand in for the correspondence for the dye colours as well, but if you want to see the meanings of dye colours then that's over at [Dyes and Colour Palettes]
