What herbs would the cats in your rewrite use as painkillers? And how would a cat who had chronic pain be handled?
Pain is very varied; different herbs would be used for different types. The unfortunate truth though is that pain is going to be very present in the lives of all wild cats.
The best, most effective general painkiller is poppy seeds. That's actually because poppy is an opioid! As a result it could be highly addictive, and it has nasty side effects like withdrawls and lethargy.
I don't think this would be withheld from a cat with severe chronic pain though, if it's the only thing that helps. If possible, it would be much better to treat with a more specific herb.
For example, arthritis or joint problems have pain called by swelling. Rosehip, white willowbark, or feverfew would help treat that without having to risk poppy seed addiction or side effects.
Feverfew is actually VERY useful. Migraines are also covered by this one-- AND nerve pain!
There's also... cloves, specifically for mouth pain. HOWEVER; cloves are TOXIC to cats if swallowed, so the warrior would be told to carefully chew on it with the good side of their mouth and hold the juice there for a bit, before spitting it out.
Ingesting any clove juice could be toxic, but it's better than overusing poppy seeds.

PASSED THE PRACTICAL EXAM WITH ALMOST PERECT SCORE 🥳
I was stressing so much over it since you have to do literally every question to pass. You can make some minor mistakes while drawing (like wrong shape of the cell) but any question with wrongly identified sample, or even one letter wrong in the latin name means you failed no matter that everything else might be perfect.
Almost started crying when TA told me I passed after the test. I could literally feel the pressure I put on my brain to memorize it all disappearing and my head feels so much lighter now that I'm not quizzing myself over the drawings and specifics of smell, colour etc. al the time

After the dust from the Upside Down settles, and Steve gets his feet under him, he gets really into plants and gardening.
He fills his and Eddie's home with plants, as many as he can get his hands on, and he has outdoor plots that he tends to religiously.
He talks to the indoor plants, names them all. Eddie makes fun of him for it constantly, but really he finds it endearing.
Eddie doesn't understand the gardening as much- he's not as big on being outside and doing manual labour- but by god does he think it's hot seeing Steve get all sweaty pulling weeds in the summer.
Working in the garden calms Steve, it gives him a sense of purpose and fulfills his need to care for things. It feels good to get his hands dirty and he enjoys being able to see the (literal) fruits of his labour.
He has a huge vegetable garden- carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, even a pineapple plant. He got it as joke for Argyle, there is no way it should have survived in Indiana for so long, yet somehow it refuses to die.
Steve likes to cook, and he loves being able to feed the people he loves with food he grew himself. His pride and joy is a large blackberry bush that sits at the front corner of the house. It was the first outdoor plant he had, it came with the house, and it's what got him into gardening. He yells at the kids constantly for stealing all the ripe ones before he can pick them for a pie.
Steve also has some fairly impressive flower plots. He likes how they bring colour and life to the exterior of the house, and after everything they went through with the Upside Down, it's a way for Steve to reassure himself. The world isn't ending- as long as the flowers are growing, as long as there is plant life and bugs and weeds trying to get into places they shouldn't be, the world isn't ending.
He sets some chairs and a little table out by his flowers, for Eddie or the kids to sit at while he gardens. Eddie sits at the table and reads, or just watches Steve work.
The kids hang out in the yard sometimes, making noise and sneaking snacks off the plants when they think Steve isn't looking.
El learns how to make bee rest stops, and little butterfly feeders out of sponges, and starts leaving them on the porch, and in the corners of Steve's gardens.
Robin and Nancy come over often, and Nancy teaches Steve and Robin to make flower crowns, a skill that Eddie takes advantage of at every opportunity.
Steve likes that his garden can be a place his family can come to rest. That they can fill his life with their loud laughter and prove to him that, even after everything, they'll be alright.

Every now and then I get it in my mind that I absolutely /have/ to do a thing, but once that one specific thing is done I lose energy to do anything else, which is why all I ate yesterday was a plate confit cherry tomatoes and half a roasted chicken
Tumblr media
I needed to know what confit tomatoes tasted like (they are heavenly btw), but once that was done I had no drive whatsoever to make something that went with it and just cut up a Kroger chicken and called it a day

type 2 diabetes can be treated without insulin. im just on metaformin and some other medications, no insulin pump/injections yet thankfully
OH this ask reminds me to mention I've been looking at cat diabetes from the corner of my eyes as I work on 4435435 other things (send help)
Cat diabetes has very different trends than human diabetes, so I'm trying to hit a 'balance' between reflecting it for the diabetic human beings in the audience, versus the accuracy of cat diabetes
Because, Type 2 Diabetes in cats is treated the same way as Type 1-- insulin injections. Unlike humans who can take oral supplements like metformin, pancreas-affecting medications have a weird quirk in felines where they cause the cat pancreas to throw a tantrum, say "I DUN WANNA" and swap over to Type 1 Diabetes.
Meanwhile if you just treat Type 2 Feline Diabetes with insulin, the cat pancreas can sometimes go "oh oopsie woopsie" and just... stop having diabetes.
Why, you ask, you beg, does the cat pancreas act this way? Science doesn't know. Their organs are just jerks.
So that leaves me sitting here considering what to do-- because Metformin specifically is derived from Goat's Rue. Naturalized basically everywhere. Dangling right in front of my nose is the easy pharmacognological basis of Metformin, the specific thing that the Type 2 Diabetics in my audience have been telling me they take, and this solution is so simple it's almost painful.
But off in the horizon looms Type 1 Diabetes, which logically would be the one way the cats would want to treat all forms of diabetes... and I still need to work out how exactly they're going to get this INTO the patient while still being canon-compliant.
The earliest IVs were made of bladders and feathers, incredibly crude but still effective, and both of which are easy to get... maybe a cat was taken by a human and given an IV injection and that's where they got the spark of the idea? Long ago?
And making insulin... I've found some absolutely fascinating things about the early production of insulin, but the problem is the chemical separation of animal insulin from the digestive juices produced within the pancreas.
I think a cat with their sense of smell just doing dissections, with a LIIITTLE bit of an extra stretch, could tell there was something different about the islet structures inside of the organ... but how would they know the pancreas is connected to the development of diabetes? Would they be able to experiment enough to find out that freezing the pancreas separates the digestive enzymes from the insulin?
I'm still batting it all around though
