Day 8: Your Favorite Couple

Gao Shi De and Zhou Shu Yi from We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd

Shi De and Shu Yi are by no means the perfect couple but the way they were so emotionally charged when it came to each other made a lasting impression for me. I love the recurring theme of how hate and love are 2 sides of the same coin for them.

Kurosawa Yuichi and Adachi Kiyoshi from Cherry Magic

Name a more perfect couple! Don’t worry I’ll wait. No they were perfect because so many imperfections were highlighted. Adachi was just a wallflower with high anxiety who wanted to just blend in. Kurosawa was the company’s all-star who hid his true self behind the mask of a good boy, only doing what was expected of him and not what he wanted. Who would think that a little virgin magic would guide Adachi to open his heart and for Kurosawa to get the man of his dreams.

Fighter and Tutor from Why R U? the Series

The series might have been a hot mess but I absolutely adored FighterTutor. I loved the entire setup of their relationship. I loved that we got to see Fighter go from an annoying himbo to becoming the most attentive boyfriend. I love how we got to see Tutor’s walls come down and become more vulnerable in front of Fighter, trusting him. They were honestly just magical together.

TharnType from TharnType 2: 7 Years of Love

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THARNTYPE! There’s no secret about it, I’ve gotten into arguments with people about it! I’m a TharnType apologist. S1 was a hot mess and I understand how they would be an acquired taste. But S2 TharnType showed a lot of growth, Type seemed to have mellowed out a lot and Tharn seemed to have learned to be more assertive. They argued a lot about marriage and both had valid points. I just love how mature they had become and cried when they tied the knot.

Cairo Lazaro and Gavreel Alarcon from Gameboys the Series

Another couple I love everything about. CaiReel made me laugh and squeal and literally cry. The first time I had seen an online relationship portrayed in a series. I love how Gav’s flirty and positive nature played off against Cai’s shy and grumpy demeanor. Gav helped Cai work through his guilt and coming out and Cai helped Gav work through the tail end of his grief. I love them and I’m looking forward to season 2.

Go Yoo Han and Choi Yeon Woo from Color Rush

THEY! THEM! *Chef’s Kiss* No secret that I love them too! Their story was new! We love a soulmate trope done well. I love how they were instantly connected and drawn to each other. They couldn’t stay away. They completed each other in more ways than one.

Gene and Nubsib from Lovely Writer

I LOVE THEM TOO! I love how Gene isn’t your typical type of lead in these kinds of dramas and it showcased in a blatant direct contrast of the series being filmed within the series. I love that Nubsib came up with such a convoluted plan just to be reunited with his one true love. I love that even thought Gene is older than Nubsib, it’s Nubsib that takes care of him. I love that Gene is honest with Nubsib and that even though he’s hesitant he’s still open and receptive of Nubsib’s feelings because he has feelings too.

#2: Favourite “I love you”

Skam(Og. and all the Remakes- yup, all of ’em)

I am a certified fool for hidden “I love you”s— or wait, lemme put it better; when you can see that one moment where the character goes ‘oh. I think this could be love.’

That’s where I think Skam served. The Og. ver (in Norwegian) had an iconic singing-to-Gabrielle-in-the-kitchen-scene where the intense staring is loud enough for anyone to get the memo. In fact, I think that feeling of love— in the air— can be found across all the versions; all the parallel universes (if you will). But if you’re asking for the epitome, the piano scene in the France ver. did that. All that and more.

Day 5: Your Favorite "I Love You"

Can't believe in all the ""excitement"" of work I almost forgot to do this before my day 5 clock was up. <_<;;

This was a tough one for me, and once I realized favorite, didn't have to be first, I knew just the one I wanted to do.

LIKE! They're working on this bear that records messages as something for his modeling competition and he says that while they're testing it.

And they both get so chuffed when it works. :'>

And Kao's telling Pete to push the button and Pete is like "Kao, I love you... that's me, not the doll."

It's honestly one of the sweetest scenes to me and definitely my favorite direct I love you. T_T

TharnType Get Married in TharnType 2: 7 Years of Love

THE WAY I WAS CRYING TEARS OF HAPPINESS! I’ve been rocking with TharnType since day 1 and I’ve seen them go through a lot but still stick together in the end. I know Tharn wanted to marry Type, but it was nice to see Type come to a decision on his own. Even with Tharn pressuring him he still took his time to decide.

TanBun(n) Get Married in Manner of Death

They had a whirlwind romance and a bond secured by blood. Solving a murder and almost dying multiple times would make anyone see that life is precious and if you’re in love then you should cherish it. I knew they were endgame but I was not expecting a proposal and marriage.

WenZhou Become Immortal Soulmates in Word of Honor

I know it was just a little snippet to appease fans, but it was a great snippet. It was great to see them have their happily forever after...even if they could only eat snow chips and drink slush. They just wanted to be together.

Tian Returns to the Village to be With Chief Phu in A Tale of Thousand Stars

Chief Phu waited 2 long years to be back with his beloved Tian. When he came across Tian standing on that cliff waiting for him I’m sure Chief Phu thought he was dreaming. I was so happy to see they had finally reunited after being apart for so long.

Day 6: Your Favorite Kiss

You mean favorites kisses right? Duh! Because I’m not just picking one.

Gao Shi De and Zhou Shu Yi from We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd

Two for one special! OK these aren’t on-the-lips kisses but I just love the way these two showed affection. Gentle knuckle kiss here. Gentle neck kiss there. It just gives a very real feel to their relationship. Like a camera just dropped in on a real life couple. Also Shi De and Shu Yi’s makeup scene was utterly beautiful and I’ll never be over it.

Tharn and Type from TharnType 2: 7 Years of Love

Though their bar kiss from s1 reigns supreme, I’m gonna keep it 100, the SECOND makeout scene in the kitchen was on another level. From the p-hub like setup with Tharn’s bad cooking, to the whipped topping kiss, to Tharn hiking Type up on the counter! (I’m talking about the uncut version they showed in the special ep lol). It was a lot to take in but boy did MewGulf give it their everything. But TharnType’s kisses were on another level throughout both series.

Yeon Woo and Yoo Han from Color Rush

I don’t care what anyone says, their first kiss was beyond sweet. I wasn’t expecting a kiss in the series tbh, but theirs was very soft and inexperienced. Honestly the whole scene was super powerful because right before Yoo Han had revealed his disorder to Yeon Woo.

Woo Taekyung and Noh Shinwoo from Light On Me

That soft peck Taekyung gave Shinwoo is what made me watch the series. Such a sweet lil gesture that made Shinwoo malfunction. But then Shinwoo regained his senses and planted a passionate kiss on Taekyung’s lips. Top notch content tbh. Also Shinwoo is literally the sweetest boy ever.

Gene and Nubsib from Lovely Writer

Their makeup kiss. It was really sweet. The playful banter about the indirect kiss with a dog. The way Nubsib pulled Gene in by his waist. And then this beautiful kiss. All of Gene and Sib’s kisses were spectacular though.

10 Day BL Challenge

Kay so I as well as another mutual am doing a little BL challenge and then maybe moving on to a 30 day one. So here we are, Day 1 of a 10 Day Challenge.

(clearly this is old because that backdrop is TakuJae from The Lover and that came out in like 2015 but whatever)

Day 1: Favorite BL

Okay so I don’t really have a favorite drama anymore so let me just do my faves rn.

Color Rush (Korea): Such an intriguing story. The soulmate trope has become a favorite of mine lately and these 2 were soulmates in every sense of the word. Can’t wait for s2.

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan): I’ve never seen a series based around cuddling before but that’s basically what this was, enemies-to-cuddle-buddies-to-lovers. I even liked Jin Yu Zhen’s little back story with his ex. It was just a good drama.

Cherry Magic (Japan): A romance with amazing and relatable characters. Healthy relationships with great dialogue and there’s no true villain which is great.

Lovely Writer (Thailand): The entire concept of Lovely Writer was refreshing. I love how meta it was. A BL within a BL and the way they took digs at the industry and fans. The mains had great communication and pretty much stomped on every annoying trope out there.

Gameboys (Philippines): LOOK! Again great communication and loveable queer characters. THE ACTING WAS SUPERIOR! I loved that it was set during quarantine. I love that it had an interactive social media aspect. I love that it was shot entirely on an iphone. It’s so perfect.

Day 4: Your Favorite Story

Color Rush

The plot of Color Rush is super interesting. I love that this series explored the dark side of soulmates. I love that Yeon Woo and Yoo Han both had something the other needed in order to feel complete. I love how they connected instantly and that Yoo Han was all for it, but Yeon Woo tried to resist. It’s just a compelling story and I’m glad we’re getting a s2 because 8 15 min eps was not enough.

A Tale of Thousand Stars

The way this series wasn’t anything I was expecting. Because I for sure thought it was going to be told from the perspective a female’s spirit trapped in a man’s body and that had me worried. I’m glad I was wrong. Idk how to even describe how much I loved the plot to the series. Just know that I was 100% behind Teacher Tian and Chief Phupha’s wild love story.

Light on Me

A love triangle done right. This is the type of series where you just sit there not caring if Boy A ended up with Boy B or C because you love both relationship dynamics. The relationship between Taekyung and Daon was just as sweet as the relationship between Taekyung and Shinwoo. It was just interesting to see how friendships can be affected by romantic relationships and how true friends won’t stand in each other’s way. This is a series you watch for the friend group and the individual relationships throughout it. It also covers a number of important topics: coming out, school gossip, bullying, unrequited love, loneliness, and more.

10 Day BL Challenge

Day 9: Your First BL

Takumi-Kun Series (Japan 2007)

A live action adaptation of a manga. The 5 part movie series follows the relationship of Saki Giichi and Hayama Takumi as they navigate through high school together.

Takumi transferred to the all boys boarding school after an incident happens with his family...the incident being repeated s*xual ab*se at the hands of his own brother...anyways he has since developed an extreme phobia of being touched by other people as a way to cope with the trauma. Literally, if anyone touches him he either shoves them away or has an panic attack.

Insert Gii who is his roommate when they meet. He immediately falls in love with Takumi and make it his mission to cure Takumi of his phobia so they can be together. He does succeed...by some questionable methods (SA)...but all in all they do get together and Gii becomes the only person allowed to touch Takumi. He even helps Takumi to make friends and sort of bury his phobia, but not cure it.

That’s just the first movie. The other movies cover the tragic death of a close friend, a huge bump in their relationship featuring a possible love rival for Gii, one of the movies is actually about a secondary couple (Misu and Shingyouji), and the last movie covers the anniversary of Takumi’s brother’s (Naoto) death.

It’s honestly an interesting watch though it can be triggering. The storyline is pretty original and most of the characters a really likeable. This is a really old series so the fashion is a hot mess. The main actors are different in the first movie, but then Watanabe Daisuke and Hamao Kyuosuke were casted for the remaining 4 movies.

They’re a little awkward together during the intimate scenes during their first movie but after that their chemistry is on point. I do recommend the series if y’all are into darker plots but still fluffy. Also Takumi is a skilled violinist and Gii runs a lot lol and also the soundtrack is really good.

Day 3: Your Favorite Song From A Drama

Would You Mind by Merry Dancers x GOH M

AKA the one song from My Engineer the Series. Like I’m pretty sure it’s the only song from the series. The song is such a chill vibe and it honestly puts me at ease whenever I listen to it. Also the rap towards the end is always such a treat.

The Otherside by GOMU

This is from the Takumi-Kun Series. It’s a very old Japanese BL movie series. I don’t even remember which movie it’s from but I think it was the 2nd one after they changed main actors. The vocals are great and I always get hit with nostalgia every time I hear the song. I want to rewatch the series but the main character’s back story is so freaking messed up.

Secretly by Wayne Huang

This song is from History: Obsessed. Though the first installment of the History series was questionable in it’s entirety, I really liked this song a lot. It’s sang so beautifully and honestly deserves a better series to be paired with.

I have to admit when I was reading over this list yesterday I thought Day 1 would be the hardest but it turns out that Day 2 is even harder and I sat here agonizing over the decision and trying to contextualize to myself what I felt made a "favorite" lead character. More on the criteria I used below!

That being said... my pick for favorite lead character would be Khai, from Theory of Love. (Beware: Spoilers Below)

This ultimately was an incredibly difficult pick. When I first started digging around I listed about every lead character I even liked. I had to find some way to narrow it down and ultimately, I think it had to do with 1) how the character was portrayed and 2) the arc that he went through.

It's hard to choose a favorite without thinking a little bit about what their part in the story is. Some leads--like Mork from Fish Upon the Sky--don't really have much going for them. They're too perfect, too ideal, or lack any kind of personality outside of their affection for their potential partner. I feel like perfect relationship partners can be a little boring and so eventually I was able to use that to clear out a lot of leads that I did like but lacked a certain something when it came to the surrounding narrative.

Khai is obviously far from perfect and he's definitely not boring. Even early on, you get the feeling of Khai's deep adoration for Third. Even when he's doing things that hurt him--intentionally or not--I always get the feeling at least a little that in his own mind he thinks he's doing what is best for Third and preserving their friendship. (Somewhere I have an essay about some of the things Khai does in the first half of ToL (show only) and how even though he might not know the extent of Third's feelings until later are all soft rebuffs and gentle redirections).

But I guess to really dig into why Khai is the lead I chose for my favorite, you have to talk about his redemption tour. Khai I feel is a flawed but well meaning individual, he hurts Third in a lot of ways both on accident (womanizing, flaunting relationships, not wanting to be more than a friend) and on purpose (trying to "land" Third because he thinks he might have feelings, deliberately misunderstanding his confession, the scene where he kisses Third and calls him by someone else's name while saying he loves him... ugh)--but I think in his mind some of the on purpose stuff he'd think is "for Third's own good" because Khai doesn't like him like that (more on this) and he's trying to help him get over his feelings.

But Khai does like him like that. I have some theories about when it started but nothing relevant. And when Khai does realize that and his friends advise him how deeply he's already hurt Third/that Third is trying to move on, Khai makes it a mission to make up for the hurt he's caused. I feel like Khai's revelation and then desire to turn himself into the type of person who does deserve a love like Third has for him is one of the more compelling plot lines in a BL. Usually, the factors preventing a relationship are external, or internal in a way that deal with coming to terms with sexuality (which there is some of that for Khai as well but not really when it comes to making up with and getting together with Third), but I liked how it was internal with coming to terms with how much he'd hurt his friend and what he'd need to do to make amends and prove that he wasn't going to treat Third like all his strings of ex-girlfriends.

I just want to mention one of my great turning points for him was that scene in the train station. There's something very very very telling about the type of devotion and willingness to try and be better that's encapsulated in that series of scenes, even though he's being ignored, and abandoned, and tossed aside--he still stays, waiting.

There's something I feel very compelling and warming about a level of commitment like that. Not only to get over his own fears but also work hard to work on himself, to really prove that he can change--and does change. I think Khai is a very interesting character and of course, the portrayal of him by Off is absolutely fantastic. I think he's one of the more complex and interesting characters I've seen as a lead.

Just for a fun bit of trivia the runner ups for this were: Pete from Dark Blue Kiss, Chonlatee from Tonhon Chonlatee, and Kevin from I Miss You When I See You.

Day 1: Your Favorite BL

Let's first talk about the absolute big dick energy of the creator of this challenge to put favorite overall right at the top. That's capstone level shit and probably the most difficult one to answer (for me.) SPOILERS AHEAD, BEWARE!

That being said... my pick for favorite BL would be A Tale of A Thousand Stars!

There's a lot to be said about how much I loved this so I'm going to try an articulate it in a way that isn't too rambling or ridiculous.

Story: I felt like this was such a beautiful love story and it surprised me in the way it handled it. Reading the summary on mydramalist versus actually watching the show was something of a revelation. The summary on MDL makes it seem almost like the fact that Tian is in possession of Torfun's heart is the reason that he develops feelings for Phupha and vice versa. Watching it, I don't feel as though that's necessarily true. (Mostly because canonically Phupha does not have romantic feelings for Torfun, so it's a non-factor.)

That being said-- the pacing and slow burn of the story I felt was done in a really refreshing way. I liked how it didn't suffer from a lot of the pitfalls other BLs do where a lot of the conflict is sexuality confusion based and it was interesting to see a romantic conflict more rooted in class and cultural differences.

I felt like it was all handled quite well and I enjoyed the conflicts and pitfalls that the two main characters faced, especially as it felt like a realistic conflict for people from two different worlds to face. (10/10)

Acting/Cast: All things being equal, I think I first got interested in the series because I'd just come off watching Tonhon Chonlatee and wanted to consume everything I could with Khaotung in it, whom I thought was amazing, and he didn't disappoint in this either. (Shoutout to Longtae.)

The acting and cast in this was absolutely stunning, imo. It had a lot of people I already liked in it (Nammon and Khaotung and Earth and White) as well as people I would come to later have more of an appreciation of as I continued watching more things.

Honestly, I felt the acting in this came across as incredibly genuine, nothing really felt forced, the chemistry between the leads was absolutely stellar and the relationships between everyone came across as very sincere. You really believe the setting through the characters. (10/10)

Music: This is probably the one thing across BLs I don't really have an opinion on. Usually I think it's fitting and helps evoke the right mood and and feeling but it's not something I hugely pay attention to. (?/10)

Rewatch Value: I think this has a lot of rewatch value mostly because I think everything does. Sometimes knowing the "twists" can make it interesting to frame the series again knowing what you know now. That being said this feels like one of those eternal love stories that has almost a fairy tale quality to it that you can just sink into again and again.

#3: Favourite Couple

so many to choose from… hmm…. nope, imma break the borders and choose my favourites. Noh Shinwoo and Taekyung [ Light On Me]

Off the top of my head— it’s our saebit highschool’s cutest Couple. I loved Taekyung for all his quirks and Shinwoo for his selflessness. I loved their unusual dynamics. I loved that they were ‘right’ for each other; that they deserved each other; that they grew into their love for each other. I mean, I predicted so much- about how they‘d start befriending each other or when they’d get together- but they surprised me every time with these lovely little twists.

They are definitely a couple I‘d like to see more of…..(season 2 where are you 👀?)

Cairo and Gavreel [Gameboys the series]

Honestly, this series aced in everything- from the characterisation to the storyline to the music. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Caireel features on this list.

The thing that touched me most with them is the character development; everytime they fought and made up, I could see them learn from each other or rather, learn together. Plus, Gavreel’s cringe-worthy flirting and Cairo‘s deadpan responses, their pain, their laughter, their cheesy apologies, their mutual understanding— all of it made them so very real.

Yes, yes I could go on but I’m afraid I won’t stop so😅….. (until season 2, I suppose)
