If the spnepisodebracket craze has shown us anything, it's that the supernatural fanbase is extremely divided, with the lowly sam stan seemingly at the bottom of the pile. sam is always last in polls, so this is a bracket for the 10% or so who always votes for him. because yeah, there's 327 episodes of Supernatural, but how many are popular because of a dean or destiel moment? how many good episodes are drowned out because they focus on sam?

i've chosen, with some crowdsourced peer review (special thanks to @spneveryseason, @suncaptor, and @ambersock!) 125 episodes that are Sam Relevant. Some are extremely sam-centric, some just have a shot where sam looks like he's being crucified that gives me brain worms -- i tried to be generous about it to keep a relatively even seasons distribution! matchups will be random and polls will last 24 hours each. in the tradition of @spnepisodebracket (who this is obviously inspired by and would not be possible without!) i'll try to rb a gifset for every episode in the poll!

a final note: no this is not that serious but the criteria for voting here should be how good the episode is as a SAM episode, not as anything else, so please vote accordingly! i am making this for people who actually enjoy sam and if that is not you, then this is not the poll for you!

For what it's worth, given that we're talking about September 2023 - I'll gladly join you in a stacked rewatch for The 100. I've tried to rewatch in order and it's just impossible for me now, but I think the air date method is a really novel way to mix it up. Count me in! (In ten months, lol.)

I often find myself missing the ~energy of this fandom (read: exclusively that of my mutuals in my little dash <3), so if any of you joined me I'd love it! I do want to rewatch the show eventually, but like you, thinking of a regular rewatch... eh. But this way is a lot of fun and can lead to really interesting findings IMO.

(in particular, I think a rewatch of this show, knowing all I know in hindsight, it's going to make Clarke a more enjoyable protagonist for me LMAO)

The (tentative) idea would be start in October 22nd 2023 (in part so I have time after finishing stackediaries lol), with the second season's premiere. That way, we'd finish on September 30th (2024) with the proper series finale. I'm c&p how the schedule would look under the cut:

SPN Recurring Themes: Dean apologising for his failings at parenting Sam

I’m still waiting for Sam (and a large part of the fandom) to acknowledge just once that Sam doesn’t owe Dean forgiveness because all things considered Dean did reasonably well, because it’s so far in the past Sam had plenty of time to get over it, or because Sam is generous enough to be the bigger man - but that Dean should never have been placed in this position to begin with and that any discussion if Dean was a good abuse victim or a bad abuse victim completely misses the point.

i love hearing people talk about this so: what do you want out of the rest of this season?

ahhh anon you have no idea how much you’re indulging me rn. i have MANY thoughts so this is gonna be very unorganized but here we go(under the cut because i let myself fully scream into the void here):

i just want to start off by saying theres only 5 episodes left and my expectations are way too high so a lot of this will be me clowning:) also a lot of these are revolving bellarke so i apologize in advance but they own me. ok lets dive in

1. bellarke endgame (obviously lol). this is like pretty much the thing i want the most. its been 6 and a half seasons of me waiting and waiting and at this point if it doesnt happen i’ll be pretty pissed. i know this show isn't meant to revolve around romance or whatever but come on! its been built up for 7 seasons. just give it to us lol. but no if we don't get bellarke im gonna shit in jroth’s lawn bye

2. s5 we got “what does your head say?” “same as yours” so yeah im sure you can guess where i’m going, i need want a “what does your heart say?” “same as yours” BECAUSE THE HEAD AND THE HEART OK

3. let murphy live for the love of god. i just have this bad feeling that he’s gonna be sacrificing himself bc ~character development~ since he's the cockroach and is always doing things to ensure his own survival. but like. as nice as that is for character development my boy deserves to live after surviving for so long. i just want him and emori to be happy and if he dies i think that scene would break me

4. so now that we have our void!Bellamy i want to see that angst!! not just with bellarke but also with the rest of his friends and fam, he loves these people so much and seeing that just get turned off is gonna be interesting. 

5. RADIO CALLS. i scream about these all the time but all i want is for bellamy to hear some of clarke’s radio calls from after praimfaya. we might get em in 7x12 since clarke will be in mcap. which leads me to:

6. the head and the heart parallels. last season: bellamy brought clarke back by pumping life into her heart. literally. this season: what im hoping is clarke or clarke’s memories in some way help get bellamy back. he is brainwashed so she brings him back through the head!!!

7. a proper blake reunion. i need octavia and bell to just hug it out man. i miss their dynamic 

8. lol where tf is gaia?? this is just my spec that i want to come true but i think she ended up on earth somehow. also i want her to come to sanctum and end sheidheda pls

9. echo character development. idk i feel like her character has been kinda inconsistent this season and i can't figure out how they're gonna end her story. just let her become her own person instead of a follower. also let raven be happy and give me princess mechanic back in full force. also clarktavia team ups pls

10. return to earth!! 7x14 is called a sort of homecoming and book 3 of the 100 is called homecoming where they go back to earth and bellarke get together. give me “he tastes like joy. and joy tastes better on earth.” give me “i’ve loved you for eons, clarke griffin.” let them have the “final journey to the ground”

11. speaking of which, some phrases i want one last time: the whole “in peace may you leave the shore” even though ik thats when someone dies but it never fails to make me cry. and “may we meet again” obvi. “we're back bitches” would be nice. “together” with clarke and bell. and some head and the heart.

12. let miller have his beach. with jackson. pls

13. ok ik this is getting super long but let them all live pls. i know this is so so unrealistic and we're probably getting more character deaths but im too attached to them all and in a perfect world i would want them all to live

14. a somewhat happy ending?? its been said that it'll be bittersweet, very the 100, but at least let bellamy and clarke have a life together.

1. Who is your favorite character in 2?

Zuko!!

I actually like all the characters in this show, they were all so nicely developed that I couldn’t help it. But Zuko was a perfection combination of a tragic past, a jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold trope and the fucking best redemption arc I ever did see. So I was pretty much a goner for this dude.

2. Who is your least favorite character in one?

If you’d asked me that a year or so ago, my answer would have been a different one... but now I’d go with Rumpelstiltskin, merely because of my overall feelings about how his story ended (and how the focus needed for that resolution stole precious screentime from other storylines, yes I’m still bitter). But I’m happy I’ve gotten over my hate both for him and any other character I’ve hated in that show. That was a very toxic feeling that I wish I’d never felt, especially for the amount of time I felt it.

3. What is your favorite episode of 4?

Oh, lol, that’s hard. I actually really liked the pilot? But the fact that I bingewatched seasons 1-4 and then 5 on its own, combined with the fact that I was frustrated with some writing choices give me a hard time choosing one specific episode.

4. What is your favorite season of 5?

Hmm so at first I wrote the current one (third) just out of the feeling of vindication I got from recent events, but overall I realized it dragged on. A lot. Especially the episode set in DC... lots of moments that were clearly there only for the torture pr0n.

5. Who is your favorite couple in 3?

Darryl and White Josh T_T and the development of the last episode I watched shook me so hard T_T

6. Who is your favorite couple in 2?

I mean... I don’t ship them, but I’m adamant in my belief that Katara ending up with Zuko would’ve been a much better choice from all perspectives. So yeah, Zutara. But Sokka and Suki were cute too.

7. What is your favorite episode of 1?

It’s been one year and I’m still not loving Alice any more than I love Killian, but she’s still in second place and this episode is one of the best written episodes of the whole show. 7x07 falls close second because despite its problems the lullaby scene still makes me wanna roll in a blanket and cry.

8. What is your favorite episode of 5?

... actually, I’d go with the one where we see how Luke survived being shot and managed to cross to Canada. It’s the first episode we don’t get to see a shit ton of women suffering, and my whumper side finally woke up and appreciated seeing a guy (regardless that he wasn’t very high up on the potential whumpees list) stumbling around the freezing cold with a bullet wound in his gut. But seeing the Waterfords being arrested wasn’t that bad, either.

9. What is your favorite season of 2?

How does one choose from three impeccably written seasons?

I guess the third one, since it’s the one we saw the climax and conclusion of Zuko’s redemption arc and see him join the Gaang.

10. How long have you watched 1?

I bingewatched the first season a bit before season 2 came out, and after that I watched the show every week. I only watched specific scenes from s6 (I’ve actually only watched two or three episodes in their entirety) and specific episodes and scenes from s7. I still rewatch some scenes once in a while, but not with the fervor I did back during the hiatuses between seasons and half-seasons.

11. How did you become interested in 3?

Netflix recommended it and I’m so happy it did. I had heard about it being a musical with good humor and self-knowledge, but I hadn’t expected it to be that good and exactly what I liked.

12. Who is your favorite actor in 4?

Rahul Kohli. 

13. Which do your prefer, 1, 2 or 5?

Let’s see, lazy writing with one (1) character that I happened to get addicted to, the best writing ever from any perspective (aside from that one) or derpressing torture pr0n?

I’m actually... I love Killian Jones despite all the flaws in the writing of him and his surroundings, and I’d dare say more than I love AtLA. 

So yeah. Even though I’m not proud, I choose OUaT.

14. Which shows have you seen more episodes? 1 or 3?

Well, 1. Even with skipping most of s6 and some of s7, it’s still more, especially if you count the rewatchings.

15. If you could be anyone from 4 who would you be?

I’d love to be Ravi, firstly because he’s dope and secondly, call me crazy, but I’d actually love to... “experience” those monthlies he had. Like, live like a zombie for a few days a month then go back to being a human. Considering how, if you ate the right brains, it seemed that being a zombie was a pretty tolerable experience, and even better if you ate some good brain. I’d much rather have zombie monthlies than period, that’s for sure.

16. Would a cross over between 3 and 4 work? 

Totally. And if they combined CEG’s humor with iZombie s5′s humor, I would probably die from humor overdose. Plus I can already see someone singing happily about being (or not being) a zombie, with Romero zombies dancing around, as they do.

17. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strange couple. 

You mean a crackship that no one has thought of?

Ruby and Cruella, lol. The conflict of interests alone...

18. Overall which show has the better storyline 3 or 5? 

Eh I feel like THT dragged on a bit and could have reached the point it’s at now much faster. And I can’t find it in my heart to say anything negative about CEG, truly, so I choose 3.

19. Which has the better theme music? 2 or 4?

I feel bad choosing iZombie for this one... but it’s just that I liked its theme music a lot. AtLA had a great soundtrack in general, but its theme music would fall second here, sorry D:

Season 1: omg they look like INFANTS

1. “Home” 1x09. This episode is amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing AND it’s super important to the mytharch AND we get Winchester family drama. One of those early instances of “Wow we need to give Jensen Ackles an emmy like yesterday”. Mary turns up and foreshadows like??? so much??

2. “Scarecrow” 1x11. Super creepy, major “The Lottery” vibes, fuck I just. I love it. 

3. “Hell House” 1x17. Close call between this one and “Something Wicked” but in the end, Harry and Ed and all the hilarity that ensues just. *chef’s kiss*

Season 2:  ugh so many good episodes season 2 is SO good

1. “The Usual Suspects” 2x07. SAM GETS TO BE SO SNARKY IN THIS EPISODE AND I LOOOOVE IT. Also Diana is a bamf. 

2. “Croatoan” 1x09. UGH YASSSSSSS. Close call between this and “In My Time Of Dying”, though

3. “What is And What Should Never Be” 2x20. Look man, I don’t know what to tell you. I’m cheap as all get out. Dean angst? Gimme gimme. Also it has WYNONNA EARP IN IT.

1. “Bad Day At Black Rock” 3x03. This episode it just hilarious from start to finish. Also, Bela vs. Dean. 

2. “Mystery Spot” 3x11. A double whammy of HILARIOUS and OH FUCK THIS IS DEPRESSING. 

3. “Jus In Bello” 3x12. It was real hard to decide between this and Ghostfacers but ultimately, Nancy Fitzgerald (aka Ella Lopez) and Victor Henrikson are the actual best and deserve all the love ever.

Season 4: Somehow there is only one episode that is not stunningly amazing?? 

1: “On the Head of A Pin” 4x16. Cas becomes a main character and it is AMAZING and oh my god give Jensen ALL the emmys oh and ALSO we finally learn exactly what Sam and Ruby’s “extracurricular activities” entail. Feels like a movie. We get the reveal that the angels are working to break the seals. Anna is also amazing. Why is this episode so beautiful. I’m fucking crying and so is Dean. I could gush for hours. 

2. “It’s a Terrible Life” 4x17. This episode is just a fucking delight. (Am I giving it such a high score on the basis of The Kink’s “Well Respected Man” alone? Maybe. Honestly I SHOULD be putting Rapture here but oh well. I’m biased.) 

3. “Monster Movie” 4x05. It was hard to decide between this “In the Beginning” “Lazarus Rising” “The Rapture” and “Lucifer Rising” (which all deserve all the praise ever) but ugh ugh ugh this episode is ALSO perfect AND I love it a bajillion. It’s in black and white and the guest actress is SO pretty and also I think I’ve already gone into detail about how the MoTW is a Lucifer Parallel. Also Dean says he’s been rehymenated so TRANS!DEAN RIGHTS!

Season 5: You want to be sad? You also want to watch really good TV? SEASON FIVE IS WHERE IT’S AT! 

1. “Two Minutes To Midnight” 5x21. I know, I know. I should be putting “Swan Song” here but look,, I am easily bought with the promise of Julian Richings as Death. 

2. “Free To Be You And Me” 5x03. Funny Destiel buddy cop film, Sam gets to be filtered through the eyes of an audience-stand-in in universe, also contains Castiel’s ICONIC line “but today you’re MY little bitch”. 

3. “Dark Side of The Moon” 5x16. Narrowly beats out “My Bloody Valentine”, “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid”, and “The Song Remains The Same”. I am trash for any pieces of Sam and Dean’s childhoods and also this episode gives me SO MUCH material for beating up John with a baseball bat.

Season 7:  Terrible reputation given the fact that it has SO many great episodes. Sera Gamble? You’re mean. 

1. “Slash Fiction” 7x06. Why is this episode so hilarious???? Robbie Thompson starting out with a BANG!

2. “Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie” 7x14. In the total goop of “thick. black. ooze.” of this season, 7x14 is a light in the darkness. Every inkling of joy, of spark, of color, of childishness, all of it, poured out into this one episode, wherein Sam totally loses his cool and I love it. Sam looks so pretty at the end. Dean is simultaneously an actual child and an actual Dad and I love it. 

3. “Out With The Old” 7x16. I love me some levis, man, don’t know what to tell you. It’s just so fun!!

Stray thoughts

1) I really don’t think Snyder would’ve gotten such a huge… oh, wait. Inferiority complex. Yep. He totally would.

2) I really don’t understand why Giles is so upset about Buffy having Spike’s chip removed? Like, he worked alongside Angel when he had a soul and not once did he show concern about Angel attacking them or going on a killing spree. Moreover, the chip had proven to be useless if Spike was under the influence of The First, so whether he had it or not was kind of a moot point at the moment.

Oh. I think maybe Giles was upset that Buffy didn’t check with him first. Like, how dare she make such an important decision without asking for my opinion?

3) Chao-Ahn is hands down my favorite potential. There’s no contest, really.

4) How convenient…

GILES I have to ask—why on Earth did you make that decision?

BUFFY Guess it was instinct, like you were talking about.

GILES I made that up!

5) It’s ironic that Giles accuses Buffy of letting her feelings cloud her judgment because I think that’s exactly what he was doing. Giles despised Spike, and I don’t blame him, he had reason to. But he was letting his hatred of Spike get in the way of seeing the bigger picture: if the First wanted Spike dead, then they should guard him at all costs because he might be a key player in defeating The First – as he rather obviously turned out to be…

GILES Buffy, I want more for you. Your feelings for him are coloring your judgment. I can hear it in your voice.

I’m not saying that Buffy’s feelings for Spike weren’t influencing her decision-making because they obviously were. But… Buffy’s emotions had always been her strength, her emotions are what drive her instinct, and the fact that she didn’t voice a logical reason to explain her choices doesn’t mean that they were wrong.

6) This is so me as a teacher...

PRINCIPAL WOOD Um, what're you doing tonight?

BUFFY Preparing for tomorrow's counseling sessions.

PRINCIPAL WOOD No, really.

BUFFY Watching a reality show about a millionaire.

7) Why would he keep his knife collection at the school, though? Doesn’t make any sense!

10) I genuinely had to stop watching to laugh for a solid minute after this…

GILES Yes, and the language barrier is formidable. I was concerned that my Mandarin is a little thin, but as it turns out, she speaks Cantonese, which is thinner. But we muddled through, and, as I suspected, ice cream is a universal language.

BUFFY What'd she say?

GILES She's grateful to be in the land of plenty. 

11) Oh, the double standards…

ANDREW  Um, I follow Buffy's orders now. I'm redeeming myself for... killing you... I mean, for... killing Jonathan.

JONATHAN/FIRST Really, why? So you can earn a spot on her little pep squad? You think she'll ever let you in? You're a murderer.

ANDREW Confidentially, a lot of her people are murderers. Anya and Willow and Spike.

JONATHAN/FIRST Interesting. And you're the only one she makes seek redemption. Does that seem fair to you?

You forgot Giles on that list, Andrew.

12) I love the little callback to Conversations with Dead People…

BUFFY Well, it is unclear. That's why I chose a top that says, you know, I'm comfortable in a stodgy office or a swinging casual setting—or killing you, you know, if you're a demon.

ANYA It also says I sometimes get blood on my shoulder. Or it might be pizza. I don't think I can fix it.

13) Such a great delivery on Emma’s part here…

ANYA And I wasn't talking about your date anyway. I was talking about this sham date of Xander's. I think it's part of a plan to make me jealous.

BUFFY Well, it's not working.

ANYA Are you nuts? Of course it's working. Observe my bitter ranting. Hear the shrill edge of hysteria in my voice!

14) Oh, but he does care…

SPIKE Heard you got a date.

BUFFY Well, it's unclear. I mean, I have this whole theory about a promotion. Or he's evil.

SPIKE Buffy, I'm all right.

BUFFY You don't have to—

SPIKE What? Be noble? I'm not. Really, I'm all right. Think I still dream of a crypt for two with a white picket fence? My eyes are clear.

15) Oh, Xander, you’re still the same awkward dork you were seven seasons ago…

XANDER I'm just glad you're here. You're gonna love the coffee. Got myself a redeye—it's black coffee with a shot of espresso. It's kinda rough if you're not used to that sort of thing—

LISSA It's hot cocoa.

XANDER Well, sometimes I don't sleep too good.

16) ICONIC! So glad to see Giles’s gory doodles back, I fucking love them.

ANYA Giles made them for Chao-Ahn, and now she's locked herself in the bathroom. There’re other girls upstairs, and they're starting to complain.

GILES Those are flashcards. I made them to facilitate her training. Chao-Ahn never had a watcher. The language problem...

WILLOW You showed her these?

GILES I wanted her to understand the seriousness of her situation.

DAWN Holy crap!

17) Well, excuse you, Giles, but if I knew the world was going to end, I’d like to get laid. And seeing your flashcards is all the more reason to.

GILES For God's sake! How can anyone think about their social life? We are about to fight the original primal evil. These girls are in mortal danger. Didn't you see the flashcards? This isn't right.

18) I wonder why Xander doesn’t quite disclose exactly what was that he did to Anya… could it be that he knows is way worse than “bad” and he doesn’t want to seem like a douche in front of the girl he’s flirting with? I’ve said it before, I don’t necessarily disagree with Xander’s decision not to get married – although he truly picked the second to worst possible moment to do it. That being said, if you did the deed, own up to it, call it for what it was – you left your girlfriend at the altar.

19) It’s nice to hear Robin’s “origin” story, so to speak, but I felt the scene was lacking emotion and gravity. This was kind of a big revelation as far as the Slayer lore goes, you know? But it’s a scene that just goes under the radar.

Anyway, I also feel it would be very unlikely for Robin not to know Spike was the vampire that killed his mother before coming to Sunnydale. He says he was raised by a watcher, and we know there were written records about the Fanged Four. Plus, we know how Spike loved to brag, so if he truly tried to track him down, he would’ve found him.

21) I still don’t see why they would take ANYTHING the First said at face value! Like, Giles hears this…

SPIKE Why did it appear to this one, then? I thought it was supposed to be pulling my strings.

ANDREW It said it wasn't time for you yet.

…and you can see that he’s thinking: “I’m right, he’s a danger to us all, we have to get rid of him immediately!”

But why would The First disclose its real intentions to any of them, especially the ones it’s trying to manipulate?

It’s just so dumb that they couldn’t read the First’s intentions properly, especially Giles of all people, it annoys me.

22) I find this moment really funny, but when exactly did Xander manage to send the bat signal? Or did he send the “I just got lucky” signal and thankfully they interpreted it wrong?

WILLOW No, it's a text message. Oh, it's from Xander. It's one of our signals.

AMANDA Signals?

WILLOW Yeah, the system we set up a while back. Like codes. Uh, this one's either "I just got lucky, don't call me for a while" or "my date's a demon who's trying to kill me."

KENNEDY You don't remember which?

WILLOW It was a long time ago.

DAWN Well, if we play the percentages...

GILES Something's eating Xander's head.

24) And how annoying is it that Robin keeps LOOKING at Spike in the rear-view mirror? You’re not supposed to see anything in the mirror because he’s a vampire, ya mook! And if you happen to look in the mirror and not see someone who should be there, don’t you think you’d go “ooh”?

(btw, before anyone suggests this, he's not pretending he doesn’t know because later on when they’re fighting, Spike turns, and he goes: “you’re a vampire” all surprised!)

27) This is probably one of my favorite whole-gang dialogues in the show.

WILLOW What happened?

XANDER What do you think happened? Another demon woman was attracted to me. I'm going gay. I've decided I'm turning gay. Willow, gay me up. Come on, let's gay.

WILLOW What?

XANDER You heard me. Just tell me what to do. I'm mentally undressing Scott Bakula right now. That's a start, isn't it?

ANDREW Captain Archer...

XANDER Come on, let's get this gay show on the gay road. Help me out here.

BUFFY What if you just start attracting male demons?

DAWN Clem always liked you.

ANYA It would serve you right.

GILES Children, enough.

XANDER I'd need some stylish new clothes.

28) I think Giles’ speech would’ve resonated better if he hadn’t picked up the flashcards again, I mean, come on…

But in all seriousness, I get that he wants them to focus and he might have a good point that they seem to be distracted with trifles. But… don’t you think they needed that? Don’t you think amidst all the death and danger and apocalypses they’d want to have at least some crumbs of normalcy? Don’t you think that’s what has kept them sane and helped them plow through it all?

But let’s keep this reaction in mind for future episodes, okay? Let’s try and remember how Giles’s speech might have affected Buffy and the way she handled herself as a leader moving forward, okay?

29) I’m just going to leave this here…

SPIKE It, uh, it talked to the little boy. Said it wasn't time for me yet. I should move out. Leave town before it is time for me.

BUFFY No, you have to stay.

SPIKE You've got another demon fighter now.

BUFFY That's not why I need you here.

SPIKE Is that right? Why's that then?

BUFFY 'Cause I'm not ready for you to not be here.

30) This woman is just… stunningly beautiful.

31) Again, why would you believe whatever the ultimate evil has to tell you? I mean, this time, it was the truth, but Robin had no way of knowing that, and he immediately believes it? Everyone’s so dumb, it makes me angry.

32) I should probably re-read my recaps and figure out exactly when I started to get so pissed because I think I’m becoming angrier and angrier at the characters with each episode that I rewatch and I’m not even on Empty Places yet. I dread that moment.
