twd used their entire budget on the weird fisheye focus shit they got going on instead of hiring real actors to play the walkers

I don't know why there's a resurgence of Just My Imagination images and gifs, but I'm certainly not complaining! It's one of my favorite episodes, and Sam looks fabulous in every shot (particularly in the single layer night shirt), including sleepy Sam!

something something sam's history of defining himself in opposition to the characteristics of his brother and father as a way of asserting his independence and identity and, occasionally, superiority to the family he's always felt a certain degree of exclusion from, plus something something dean continuing to perform for sam as a way to give sam characteristics to define himself in opposition to so he doesn't find other ones that will land him in rubyimean trouble or push him to leave again. something something channeling sam's defiance at his own self image into bursts of *mostly* harmless teasing something something no reason to defend himself against it because it's essentially exactly what he wants to happen and also something something yay sex gambling and food
Hoho! Dean is definitely likely to be outdoing Sam at something or other or Sam is likely to be mad about something else in episodes where Sam is the hardest on Dean for having fun so I definitely think you're onto something. Plus how Sam casts himself as this kid who was always desperate for normal in 1.08 "Bugs", but episodes like 11.08 "Just My Imagination" show him desperate to be included. One of the things Sam seems to desire the most imo is respect, and asserting his independence and distancing himself from the family business allows him to reject his need for respect from his family.
Idk if Dean's worried Sam will leave necessarily if he doesn't play a role for him in a very direct sense/throughout the whole series, but I do think he's used to playing up a persona in his family, and especially in season 1, I think the humor and smiles and brushing Sam off as a bore/no fun when Sam criticized him was probably frequently Dean's way of de-escalating conflict in the family occurring between Sam and John, and also avoiding being drawn into conflict himself when Sam and John took out their frustration with each other on him (1.08, 1.10, 1.11, 1.20, 1.21, 2.01). If Dean didn't deal with all the fighting with deflection and humor, he would've gotten angry. All of that resentment—and the belief that Sam and John are both selfish and used him and don't care about him (1.06) would have to come out and Dean doesn't know what the fallout of that would be (probably the entire family falling apart because there's no one left trying to cool tempers) so he doesn't touch it.
