Lessons from Exodus 3: Complaining Against God
Psalm 106.21, 24-25
They forgot God their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt… Then they despised the pleasant land; They did not believe in His word, but grumbled in their tents; they did not listen to the voice of the LORD.
The next thing I noticed in the book of Exodus is that the Hebrews did not trust God to do what He'd promised. At every turn, they complained. Nothing suited them. They didn't want to wait for God to act; they wanted to turn back to Egypt, to slavery,
In the movie (The Ten Commandments), one of the characters was used as a device to keep the people stirred up against Moses and against God. But people seldom need encouragement to complain against God.
The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The sons of Israel said to them, 'Would that we had died by the LORD's hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.' Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you…' —Exodus 16.2-4
But they even complained about the heavenly manna!
'We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.' —Numbers 11.5-6
And so God gave them meat, enough so that, as we say, it was coming out their ears.
Say to the people, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying 'Oh that someone would give us meat to eat! For we were well-off in Egypt.' Therefore the LORD will give you meat and you shall eat. You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, but a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you; because you have rejected the LORD who is among you and have wept before Him, saying, "Why did we ever leave Egypt?"' —Numbers 11.18-20
Have we ever done that? Do we ever complain to God, because we think we were better off when we were sinners? Do we complain because we think we had more 'fun' back in Egypt? Do we forget what we once were? Do we forget the slavery to sin from which we have been freed?!
In Psalm 106, we read this cryptic comment:
So He gave them their request, but sent a wasting disease among them. —Psalm 106.15
Most commentators interpret this to mean that in exchange for granting their grumbling requests, they developed a 'leanness of soul'. I suppose it could mean a lot of things: a general apathy, a general decline in health, a general shift in attitude.
God cared for them, fed them, provided everything they needed, yet they continually grumbled and complained.
Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness. —1 Corinthians 10.5
Paul said that we should take heed and not behave as they did.
Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved…. —1 Corinthians 10.6
Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. —1 Corinthians 10.11-12
Take a moment to reflect on that: 'Let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall'.
This is not a game we're playing. We are living at the end of the age, and we need to become serious about our relationship with the Messiah.
