Do you guys subscribe to the theory that (at least, starting in NuWho) the Doctor can, somewhat, subconsciously control his regenerations?

Like, of course, 8 wanted to be a warrior, so he became the War Doctor (I know that he drank a potion for that, but that might’ve just been lemonade according to the Target Novelization).

War wanted to be the hero, to earn the title, the Doctor, again, so he became 9.

9 wanted to be someone who was the perfect partner to Rose (human), so he became 10.

10, in his vanity, wanted his final regeneration to be young, so he became 11.

11, after all the heartache, wanted to be more distant (and also what they said in series 8), so he became 12.

12 wanted a kind, fresh start, so he became 13.

13 wanted to open up to someone, so she became 14.

14 wanted time to heal, so he split off 15.

This is not an original theory, and I'm not even saying that I buy into it fully it, but it's interesting. It would be interesting if the Doctor had a tiny bit of control over their regeneration (Romana did, somehow) and most of the time his wants either backfire or only half work.

tenth doctor is someone who's become so comfortable with his trauma that he doesn't want to move on from that. and that's one of the reasons they are scared of regeneration cause he knows he will finally get over rose, a lot of his time war trauma will be healed and he's afraid of becoming the person they are going to be after that. a lot of ten's personality is based on rose and his time war guilt so it makes sense why he feels like the new incarnation won't be him. it's like when someone has struggled with their mental health for so long that they don't know who they are without their internal struggles.

Short from my story

The Doctor had come a long way from the reckless and borderline suicidal man he was in his ninth incarnation. But he still had moments of sadness.

Like the time the two of you were striding through a field, hand in hand, looking for an ancient cave network that housed 10 foot sparkling crystals.

“Do you know where you’re going?”

“This way, y/n. You’re gonna love this! The crystalline structures were formed from silica created by a huge lava pit that used to be here. They’ve been growing for thousands of years. Bioluminescent organisms in the molecules of the crystals make them glow!” The Doctor rambled on happily leading you over rolling hills.

“Doctor I think I see an opening in the hillside over there” You said pointing across the clearing.

“That’s the one!”

He began tugging you in that direction. The two of you trudged down, into a valley between hills.

He had stopped abruptly, forcing you to stop with him. You turned to the Doctor, fully prepared to tug him along impatiently, as he often did to you. But the look on his face made you pause.

Big, sad eyes, framed by his creased brow. You couldn’t quite place the emotion. You followed his gaze back to the scene in front of you. It was beautiful, sure, but not something you’d guess would warrant that look.

But as you took in the mountains, the sinking sun casting an orange halo around them. And the field that stretched out between you, it clicked.

His voice in your memory, leaned towards you and hushed, for your ears only. He spoke of his home. Gallifrey, with its burnt orange sky and giant, magnificent citadel. Incased in a glass dome. You could picture the resemblance.

You could now put a name to the emotion spread across his face; a bittersweet nostalgia., homesickness. Your gaze softened and you took a step closer to him, gently squeezing his hand.

The Doctor finally glanced away from the scene to meet your eyes.

“It’s beautiful here” You say, keeping your voice soft.

“It is, isn’t it?” The Doctor smiles down at you and begins walking again at a slower pace towards the cave.

“AH” You fell flat on your face. “Well, that’s one way to make an entrance” You said standing and brushing yourself down.

Infront of you stood the doctor and a rather skinny man you hadn’t met before. He had slightly lighter hair then the doctor, but it was just as messy, as if he’d been running from something. Thinking about it this man was pretty easy on the eyes. The doctor kept looking from you to the man as if he was waiting for you to say something.

“Um hi, I’m y/n” You said extending your hand.

“Right, hi I’m the doctor” He replied shaking your hand.

“What?” You said clearly taken a back.

There was two of them? Well this was new, not that you were complaining. You looked back at your doctor.

“Care to explain, darling?” You asked your boyfriend who was currently playing with his hands nervously.

“Um yes okay. Y/n this is er, well, me. A past version of me, the 10th version. He was me before I turned into” He gestured at himself with his hands “Well the current me.” He explained.

A small smirk played on your lips.

“So, he is you?” You asked looking at the other man.

Your doctor nodded. You went over to 10 and circled him, examining everything about him. His clothes, the stiffness of his lighter brown hair, the eyes which somehow reflected even more sorrow then normal and the slightly odd choice in shoes.

“Well, if I’d known you were this good looking, I would have come searching for you a long time ago” You said standing back and admiring him.

11 stared at you with his mouth open, as if he was going to say something before closing it and just sighing clearly irritated. You laughed and walked over to him.

“You know I’m joking dear” You slid your arms around his waist, and he put his arm over your shoulder holding you tight against him.

“Okay well good” He said smiling a little before planting a quick kiss on your lips.

“Whoa wait hang on” 10 interrupted. He looked from you to doctor shocked slightly. “Are you two-? So we-?” He said pointing at you.

“Yes I’m his, well your, girlfriend I guess. I mean not technically yours yet, but his definitely” You said smiling up at your boyfriend.

10 continued to look baffled for a moment before nodding his head.

“Well, that’s understandable. Your beautiful.” His comment made you smile brightly at him.

“Why thank you. As previously stated you’re not too bad yourself.” You replied with a wink.

You felt your doctor’s grip on you increase slightly as he moved you back. You chuckled at his actions, finding it hilarious that he was getting jealous of you flirting with himself.

“Doctor?” Clara’s voice called through the portal.

“Ah yes hello Clara. Can you hear me?” He dropped his arm from you and moved closer to the portal. 10 hung back a bit and stood by your side.

“Who’s that?” He asked.

“Clara. A friend of mine.” You replied.

“So, me and you huh?” 10 commented, shooting you a boyish grin.

“It looks like it.” You said, returning his smile.

“How long?” 10 pressed.

“A while.” You replied vaguely.

“What you’re not going to give me a figure?” You chuckled at his question.

“I can’t just go telling you all the details of your future. I don’t want anything you might learn to change the way things happened. You do know time can be rewritten right?” You said cheekily.

10 laughed at your comment, causing your doctor to turn round and look at the two of you. He frowned at the sight of you getting friendly with his past self. He wasn’t sure why it annoyed him, at the end of the day you were his girlfriend and it’s him you’d be going home with. But the way 10 looked at you struck a nerve in the doctor.

“You’ve been spending too much time with me if you’re quoting me” 10 replied.

“No such thing as too much time with the doctor. Every second is a gift” You said casually.

10 stared at you while you gazed around the forest the three of you were currently in. He was utterly amazed by your presence. Everything about you drew him in. Your charming nature, the way you carried yourself, your comedy. Not to mention your appearance. Suddenly a feeling of eagerness swept over him. The eagerness to meet you in the future, to catch up and live his life with you. The one you were living right now. It was a weird feeling to him; he wasn’t one to wish time away. You were some girl, having this effect on him.

Your doctor had had enough. He marched over to you and promptly wrapped his arms around your waist pulling you into him before capturing your lips with his. You were slightly taken away by the passion of it, but it didn’t take you long to return his fire and wrap your arms around his neck.

Your fingers threaded their way into his brown locks, tugging slightly, causing him to smile against your lips. He squeezed your hips in his hands which made you jump into him slightly, but you didn’t mind. When the two of you finally pulled away, you stood there staring breathlessly.

He raised his hands to cup your cheek, gently caressing it with his thumb. The love he held for you was evident in his eyes as it shone back at you. After a while, the moment was broken as he let go of you and turned to face 10.

“She’s mine. So back off” He grumbled.

“We are literally the same person. I’m allowed to feel-“ 10 started before he got cut off.

“No. No you’re not. You are a past version, she doesn’t know you. She knows me. And there is no way in any universe that you could possibly even begin to feel the way I do about her.” He ranted.

You stood and watched, speechless.

“She is the one thing in this life that holds me still and keeps me sane. No measurement of time or space would ever be big enough to describe my love for her. So don’t think for one moment that just because you’ve got a glimpse into your future, that you feel what I feel.” He concluded. His words hung in the air; the atmosphere thick with tension.

10 blinked before nodding his head and walking away. You approached your doctor, placing your hand softly on his arm and turning you to face him. His anger dissipated almost instantly when he locked eyes with you. A few tears slid their way down your cheeks are you stared at him, words failing you.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.” The doctor said sheepishly, backing away from you. You reached out and grabbed his hands.

“You think I’m crying because I’m sad?” He nodded at your words. “I’m far from it. I’m crying because of how much what you said meant to me.” You explained.

He moved closer but stayed silent allowing you to continue.

“I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling second best, like I was constantly living in the shadows of everyone around me. No one cared about me or put me first. I’ve always been an afterthought. Until you. Everything you do for me, everything you make me feel – its extraordinary. And I can now say I’ve finally found somewhere I feel wanted. This is the feeling I’ve been searching for my whole life; you are the feeling I’ve been searching for my whole life” You said, bringing his hands close to your chest. “And I love you more every day for it.” You concluded, smiling at him.

Once again he cupped your face in his hands, wiping your tears away.

“I promise, I will never push you aside. I will never make you feel the way those people did. Because you deserve this.” He gestured around him. “You deserve to feel loved and wanted in this life. I’m just glad I’m the one who can provide it for you.” He said, a smile gracing his lips.

“I love you.” You whispered.

“I love you too.” He replied, kissing your forehead.

Suddenly, 10 cleared his throat. “Sorry to interrupt. But your friend needs you” He said pointing to the portal.

You smiled at your doctor before taking his hand in yours.

“Let’s go sort the world out.”
