How Wayne Knight Got His Foot Through the Stage Door
How Wayne Knight Got His Foot Through the Stage Door
[ad_1]
Wayne Knight, 64, is an actor who has appeared in “Seinfeld” and “3rd Rock From the Sun” as well as in “Jurassic Park” and “Basic Instinct.” He will star in “12 Mighty Orphans” this fall. He spoke with Marc Myers.
As a kid, I was fascinated by film noir. My mother was a movie buff and we’d watch old films together on TV. She could identify all the obscure character actors.

20 Questions, Writers’ Edition
Thanks for the tag, @totchipanda!
How many works do you have on AO3? 68 What’s your total AO3 word count? 334,156 How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Just the stuff on AO3 -- not things I did before or snippets posted straight to tumblr, I've written for: Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows Series - Leigh Bardugo (21), Men's Hockey RPF (12), Harry Potter (8), Generation Kill (5), Moby Dick - Herman Melville (3), Mighty Ducks (Movies) (3), A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones (2), The Social Network (2010) (2), Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World (1), Justified (1), My So-Called Life (1), The Outsiders - S. E. Hinton (1), Orphan Black (TV) (1), X-Men (Movieverse) (1), Life Unexpected (1), Anne with an E (TV) (1), The Terror (TV 2018) (1), Supernatural (1), Friday Night Lights (TV) (1), Teen Wolf (TV) (1), The Vampire Diaries (TV) (1), X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies) (1) What are your top 5 fics by kudos? UGH, they’re all hockey, which I’m so not into anymore!  Top five hockey are: Friday Night Arrives Without a Suitcase, Bad Press, Permanent Parking, The Unexpected Guest, and Playing for Keeps.  Top five NON-hockey are: By the Book, A Beginning, Thieves, Little Girl, and Brick by Brick. Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I'm trying to! I love receiving them, and I love receiving replies when I comment on other people’s fics!  I was doing really well responding to all the comments the first 2 days after a fic was posted, but at this point I do have a backlog of SoC fic comments to get through.  I haven’t abandoned them! What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I think it’s The Storyteller, which is gen fic about Tim Gutterson of Justified.  I love that story, actually! Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? I have not!  Though I did try to recruit a friend to write a Chronicles of Narnia/Skins crossover about Edmund Pevensie and Effy Stonem… I still think this is a good idea. Have you ever received hate on a fic? BOY HAVE I.  The fic in question has long since been removed from AO3, but I had a terrible experience in hockey fandom where a very well-known fan/fic-writer started an absolute flame-war in the comments of a fic she deemed “problematic,” which was like 11k long, that I’d spent a lot of time on, and which had gone through three beta readers, none of whom agreed with her opinion.  It gave me a major anxiety attack, and unfortunately I had been stupid enough to check comments on my phone in my ten minute break between two night classes, so I had to then sit through the second one hyperventilating.  ANYWAY, because I am the most contrary of people, this is why I stubbornly “Choose Not to Use Archive Warnings.”  If you’re a person who needs warnings about any and all potentially upsetting content, just don’t read my stuff because I refuse to promise you that. Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yes I do.  It is one of the hardest things to write, because you need to keep track of all of those limbs!  I liken it to writing about a game of Twister while blindfolded.  Most of my smut has been M/M – Kanej was my first foray into M/F. Have you ever had a fic stolen? To the best of my knowledge, no, I have not had an entire fic stolen.  I did very recently read a Kanej fic that really rubbed me the wrong way because I noticed that not one but several sentences/character-building ideas were lifted from things I’d written in Stories About Crows.  I know there’s really nothing original in fanfiction and I’m not interested in splitting hairs over it, so I just clicked out of the fic halfway through rather than saying something, but it did upset me. Have you ever had a fic translated? My one and only Supernatural fic was translated into Brazilian Portuguese! Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. What’s your all time favourite ship? HOW DARE YOU.  I have no favorite child!  No, just kidding.  My favorite of the moment is definitely Kaz Brekker/Inej Ghafa of Six of Crows, but I maintain long-term devotion to Remus Lupin/Sirius Black of Harry Potter.  They’re actually not the Potter pairing I write for – that’s Dean Thomas/Seamus Finnigan – but they were the first pairing I went really feral over back in my teen years.  I have similar devotion to Evan Q-tip” Stafford/John Christeson of Generation Kill, but that one is a weird one because they’re very minor characters in canon, so the story I constructed for them is actually a lot of original writing. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP ON THE WANDSMITH’S APPRENTICE, BUT IT AIN’T LOOKING PROMISING, FRIENDS. What are your writing strengths? The things people point out to me the most are my commitment to very specific realism and writing dialogue that “sounds” like the characters.  I think I’m pretty good at writing kids also. What are your writing weaknesses? PLOT.  PLOT PLOT PLOT.  Also I abandon a lot of things, but I honestly think that’s just normal.  Not all of the things are good! What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? LOL.  See Portrait of the Teacher as a Young Man for my response to that one. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Lord of the Rings.  I was like 12.  It’s still up on fanfiction.net under a different alias.  I am mortified. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written? Current/recent favorite is No Echo though if I manage to finish the plotty Crows-fic I’m working on, that one is better, but don’t hold your breath.  I think long term favorite is probably You and I Both Know that the House is Haunted, but I also really like my Moby Dick and Mighty Ducks fics.

Just saw a movie called 12 Mighty Orphans with my family for the 4th, and I gotta say, I was surprised how much I liked it.
My dad picked it and it's a football movie, so I thought, oh great I'll be bored, but it's also a true story set in depression era Fort Worth, Texas and is about a bunch of scrappy underdog orphans lead by Luke Wilson. Ron White and Martin Sheen are also in it and they all do a great job. It's a fun, feel good flick.
Oh, and Newman from Seinfeld is the bad guy and I was just saying how I haven't seen him in anything in ages. Man, that man should be playing The Penguin instead of Colin Ferrel. See this movie and tell me I'm wrong.

The project, executive produced by the films’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Jon Turteltaub and writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, is an expansion of the National Treasure movie franchise told from the point of view of young heroine Jess (Alexis) — a DREAMer in search of answers about her family — who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.
