Week 52.3/52: December 25th - December 31st 2023 | Hai Di Lao with Charmy 🍅

5 months no see her. A nice and long lunch with Charmy over some yum yum soupy hot pots. We got two soup bases: tomato & tom yom. Soup for both were so good. Mostly ordered veggies like corn, potato, greens, and tofu puffs. I also got a cheap plate of beef for myself. It was a good time catching up! She takes the nicest photos for me, I swear. After eating, we walked around Richmond Center. I got some stuff from MUJI as well as the Jo Malone perfume I have been wanting for over a year!

#also typing out 24/7/365 reminds me of how one year at girl scout camp we were at the leatherwork cabin #and one of our younger members stamped out '' 20 4 7'' instead of 24/7 #to be clear by ''younger'' I mean she was at least 14 #uh anyway she's in law school now. the world works in mysterious ways!

Anaya always loved to lay out in the sun like a sunbathing cat. Really, she just loved being outside and doing anything when it’s warm. Like right now, as she is using the sword cleaning oil to clean off her swords and listening to their purrs in her ears. One of the best parts about her power was listening to the different noises a sword makes. It scratched at a corner of her brain.

“Hey girly,” a voice greeted her and Anaya looked up to find Michio pulling a chair to sit across from her. 

“Oh hey, Michio,” Anaya greeted back, wiping her hands of excess oil that got on her hands. Michio pulled out his own arsenal of blades and a little vial of what she assumed was a cleaning oil as well. He stopped momentarily as a thought seemed to pop in his head.

“So..does your power only extend to swords?” Michio asked her with raised eyebrows. Anaya tilted her head, wondering where Michio would be going with this. “So like. Let’s say you were in the kitchen when Nadia was cooking something and they were using one of their knives right. Would you be able to hear its reactions to being used?”

Anaya let out a contemplating hum as she tapped the handle of her sword. Her sword whisperer abilities weren’t something she kept note of, she realized. Maybe she needs to be prepared for questions like this. 

“I really don’t know, honestly,” Anaya answered with a shrug “I don’t necessarily understand how my power thing works. But I think it depends on the age of the blade, sword or not.”

Michio nodded as he took in the information and the two of them went back to cleaning their blades in a cozy silence between the two of them. Once Anaya finished her swords, she placed them back in her sheaths. She moved the barrel towards the side of the kitchen entrance and came back over to lay on the deck so that the sun directly hit her face.

“As usual, you’re acting more like a cat than I do,” Michio teased looking down at her and Anaya rolled her eyes while enjoying her sunbathing. Even with Michio’s mix of golden brown and black mane and fur with pointed ears, there was always the joke that Anaya was the most catlike on the ship compared to the actual cats. Etsuko, embarrassingly enough, even going along with the joke. 

Michio finished his own blade cleaning and like Anaya, placed the barrel beside hers and came back to sunbathe himself. “Couldn’t let my little cat sister sunbathe alone,” he said with a grin, his body moving to lay on his stomach. The two of them sat in their silence yet again, basking in the heat of the sun. Anaya’s quiet hums and the sounds of the ocean waves were the only things that could be heard between them.

“Do you think Etsuko would pay attention to me more if I was actually a cat of some kind?” Anaya asked, looking over at Michio with a slight frown. He lifted his head up to stare at her with narrowed eyes and a slackened jaw. 

“What kind of stupid question is that?”

“I mean, I don’t know, I just-“

“You never see the way she looks at you or hear how she talks about you.”

“Well, she probably does that with everyone.”

Michio leaned his head back with a twitch in his eye and he took a deep breath. They’ll figure it out on their own, he thought to himself. He shifted back into his comfortable silence and pushed back his desire to smack both Anaya and Etsuko. He can’t be too much in his future sister-in-law and sister’s business.

Anaya let out a deep sigh and Michio watched her body relax deeper. She closed her eyes and she slowly fell asleep as she began to fall into a nap. Michio stood up and leaned down to pick her up to take her to the bunks to place her in her bed. It amazed Michio that she could sleep through any sort of movement like that. He did seem to be forgetting something-

“Her swords,” Michio murmured and when he turned around for them, Etsuko was behind him holding the two swords. She moved to place them on a rack that he didn’t realize was in the bunk. 

“You’ve always been like mom when it came to people napping,” Etsuko pointed out with a small smile “if it’s anywhere that didn’t have a blanket, you’re making sure they’ll have that blanket.”

“That wood’s not comfortable for a regular human, you know that,” Michio told her and Etsuko nodded in agreement when she fully turned around to face Anaya. That soft look he saw in his sister’s eyes when she looked at Anaya always made him sick. Was it because it reminded him of how alone he was? Yes. Was it also because it reminded of Anaya’s stupid lamenting about her seemingly “unrequited” feelings? Definitely yes.

“I’m gonna go out and get some food with Nadia, you and Anaya get some sleep alright?” Etsuko said to him and Michio nodded before he leaned down to transform into his tuxedo cat form. He hopped up to lay around Anaya’s head and laid down.

As oblivious as she was, Michio always had the softest spot for Anaya. And despite what Etsuko said, he really didn’t care about how other people took their naps. He just cared about few people that weren’t his family, Anaya being one of those people. She was one of the kindest people he’s ever known and was truly strong in every sense of the word. Anaya always knew how to make everyone around her laugh and keep everyone smiling with her big smile. And she was gorgeous, too. He couldn’t blame Etsuko for falling for her, honestly. 

Michio felt his own body vibrating from purring and he rubbed his chin on top of her head. No matter how he looked at everyone, he hoped that the two of them would become less oblivious. And that Anaya realizes how much she means to Etsuko. His tail gently flopped side to side as his head moved down to fall asleep himself into a dreamless nap.

I did take notes for the days though, so here's a batch update for last week - it was a pretty generic week in terms of studying Japanese tbh, in that I ended up using the same resources I started with or was already continuing with in the new year. Still, it feels nice to look back even on the most mundane of days, so here goes nothing:

Week 9.4/52: February 27th - March 5th 2023 | 图书馆写真 📖

Packed for Calgary but got so tired and bored so I went outside and played with film camera apps at the library because I cannot bring myself to use an actual CCD in 2023 even though I totally had it for the past 14 years........ These turned out kind of cool????? Not sure if I like it but I definitely don’t hate it LMAO. The library without a filter is ugly asf... I feel like film filters are just here to save ugly environments so we can always get cute photos??
