in case this is interesting (?) to anyone else. while talking to @weaksspot​ we were like, does sam ever say “ain’t”? so i researched, because apparently i miss uni.

hypotheses and theories:

DISPROVEN: as sam distances himself more and more from his college life (where he may have tried to drop the dialect to fit in with his peers), he assimilates to dean’s speech patterns over time

DISPROVEN (kind of): the episodes where sam says “ain’t” were written by the same people - 3/14 episodes each were written by Ben Edlund and Andrew Dabb respectively; but at the end of the day it all comes down to jarpad, really. i can’t imagine that the scripts decide whether actors use “aren’t” or “ain’t” (?)

UNRESOLVED: why was dean (quote) “cowboying it up” so much in s7. you could argue that if this development had happened in s8 that it were related to purgatory and his proximity to benny (who obviously uses the contraction liberally). but what was going on here

Who tf are you?

I’m just an anxious stressed millennial coping with life by hyperfocusing on my most loved and most hated television show. Also, I’m incapable of doing anything casually and feel compelled to make excel spreadsheets. So really, this was inevitable.

Please note that I’m going to do my best keeping up with posting but I have a full-time job, life obligations, etc. For example, I’m getting my wisdom teeth pulled on day 1 (Sept 10th) so I’m going to try and watch in advance and schedule a post for that day.

Oh gosh this is hard I really can't choose, I also answered a smiliar question here, however I really can't write only 5 scenes bc there are so many for me so here's my top 15 :1) 9x08- I'm obsessed with that episode sorry, it was the first time Jo talked with Alex about her past and he was the only one with whom she talked about her past, since season9 guys. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE.2) 9x14- The moment Alex realized he was in love with Jo.3) 10x12 - THAT KISS AND THE WAY ALEX HELD JO AND HIS SPEECH!!!4) 11x06 - "I'm not going anywhere except home with you."5) 12x24 Jo's first I love you to Alex.6) 13x12 - the hug.7)14x02 -“I swear to God, I would never hurt you..”8) 14x03 -"I'm asking you to come back home."9) 14x15 - ICONIC.10) 14x19 -“I want to have kids with you.”11) 14x24 - FINALLY.12) 15x14 - the last scene.13) 16x01. "I'm a better man with you."14) 16x05. Throwing things at wall.15) 16x06. Jolex wedding 2.0. (It was so them, it was their thing) PS: I loved SO SO much 9x09 and 9x10, and their first scene from 9x14. And sorry, again, I can't choose a top 5 I'm so bad with top 5 lol

DrSilverfish S9 Meta Masterpost

Blog housekeeping cont!

S9 was a bit of a hot mess of a season, in my view, summed up by this quote from my 9x08 Rock and a Hard Place meta-review:

“If you are going to use sexual dub-con as a “metaphor” for Dean’s control of Sam [the Ezekiel/ Gadreeel possession by trickery, and all its season’s assault/ dub-con mirrors] and yet you insist on mixing that with sex jokes and the sexualisation of violence via the camera, an unholy mess is pretty much to be expected...”

Nevertheless, there were some lovely gems of episodes in the season (as well as plenty of queer subtext) and I enjoyed meta-ing it, notwithstanding the grossness of the larger theme. These shone through, for me; Beren’s first episode Heaven Can’t Wait (9x06) is stlll one of my top SPN episodes of all time; Glass’ deeply touching Bad Boys (9x07) was illuminated by Dylan Everett’s excellent performance as young Dean. Robbie Thompson also delivered an awesome happy ending for Charlie Bradbury with her queer Dorothy in Oz, in Slumber Party (9x04) which I insist on considering her true exit from the show (yes, this blog is still repressing Dark Dynasty 10x21 hard). Plus, Robbie’s Metafiction (9x18) was a glorious meta goldmine (I continue to miss Robbie and Edlund in the SPN writers’ room, among other things for their sense of meta fun).

Also, now, looking back on the season from the vantage point of being several years into the future, it is apparent that (however unpleasant it was to live through it at the time, and despite its often problematic execution) what the writers’ room set out to do in S9 was hold up to the light, via the Zeke/ Gadreel possession metaphor, the tragic toxicity of Dean and Sam’s co-dependency. This was a season in which Dean’s care-taking of Sam (a historic responsibility thrust upon him as a child, through no fault of his own) became a violation. The tragic consequence of which, was Dean’s desertion of his angel, whom his heart had wanted so much, and for so long, to have by his side (witness Dean’s long search for Cas in Purgatory in S8 and his “Nobody wants him here more than I do, Okay?” in 9x04) just when (fallen and newly human) Castiel needed him most. 

Yes, Carver took us down a dark road, into the roots of the Winchesters’ psychic dysfunction in S9 (the Mark of Cain narrative of S10 and 11 being the cumulative consequence) so that Dabb could, from the turning point of 11x23, bring us back up, gradually, towards the light.

1. What season did you start watching Supernatural? Well, I watched the episodes in order, I barely knew anything about the show when I started, I just saw people in tumblr talking about it like it was cool and I decided to give it a try. I started around the time season 8 was starting - I remember looking for subtitles at some point and the subtitle site had the subs up to “We Need To Talk About Kevin”, I remember it because I was like, who’s Kevin and why do they need to talk about him XD I caught up with the show when Taxi Driver aired.

2. Who was the first character you fell in love with? Dean, by Dead In The Water I had sold my soul to the guy.

3. Who was a character that you hated at first but grew to love? Mmm not sure, maybe Rowena - it’s not like I hated or, just I wasn’t sold on the storyline when it started but then I grew to appreciate her :)

4. Which character would you most want to be in a long-term relationship with? Well no one honestly...

5. If you could go on a date with just one character, which one would you choose? Cas maybe?

6. What would you do on that date? Just hang out. Relax. Experience little humanity things lol

7. Which character would you most want to be like? Uh... I don’t know?

8. Which character would you most want to see brought back from the dead? Ash. I mean, he’s cool with being dead, so maybe not brought back from the dead, but just brought back on the show, you know. And Frank Devereaux.
