reading the 15.09 script it really just strikes me how grief paralyzes Dean. The future that Chuck showed Sam shows Dean post-losing Cas, he's just. He's given up. He doesn't want to fight anymore. He's tired. Meanwhile Sam is after revenge, he "has a death wish", Dean wants to live because he family would have wanted him to, Cas would have wanted him to, but he's done with fighting. He doesn't have a death wish, he doesn't have a wish, he's just tired. Grief is paralyzing. It's exhausting.

I must have stood outside your dorm for hours. Because I didn't know what you would say. I thought you'd tell me to get lost, or get dead. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have you.

A rant and theory
It’s really long, but I think I make some valid points.
Supernatural was on for 15 years. There have been interactions with the cast, some crew, some producers, directors, writers, etc. due to the ongoing conventions and the existence of social media. Writers will talk about changes to scripts, actors will talk about filming, directors will talk about why they chose a certain angle.
Given that most of the fans/stans do not personally know any of the people involved or personally know anything about the things that are/aren’t going on, it’s weird the way some fans/stans speak so confidently about what happened with SPN behind-the-scenes, production, writing, casting, you name it!
Especially when it comes to PrequelGate. People will state with their whole chest, that their version of events is absolutely correct. One J is an asshole, and one J is an innocent baby. Which J is which depends on who is talking. It can be either or both. The only thing that all fans who have theories have in common is that there is a definite good guy and a bad guy.
But the Js are still friends. They say they got over it and forgave. Since no one has given any details, I thought I’d join the bandwagon and come up with a theory of my own. One where there is no good guy/bad guy. So here goes.
I fully believe that the story of The Winchesters was not meant to be an AU. It was supposed to take place between 15.19 and 15.20, with Dean and Sam finding out about their parents.  They had to switch it to the AU version because of the leak, a new timetable, and the fact that Jared was no longer available. There is also a recent podcast (I don't have a link) where a writer from The Winchesters said that Robbie Thompson, the writer and show runner for The Winchesters, kind of knew that they were only going to get 1 season because of all the mergers/sales of the networks and studios.
Robbie Thompson said in an interview (https://tvline.com/news/the-winchesters-recap-season-1-finale-dean-heaven-multiverse-jensen-ackles-1234942742/)  “There was the spot that takes place in between Episodes 19 and 20, when what happens to Dean happens to Dean… So there was an opportunity to tell stories there, but that just didn’t work for me because we wouldn’t have access to Sam in that way, in a way that we could easily explain or at least emotionally explain, and that just didn’t feel like it was a story that certainly I wanted to tell and none of us did.” (Underlining mine) They wouldn’t have access to Sam because Jared could not be involved. Not because no one wanted him, but because he just couldn’t.
The reason I believe this is because of the following.
It starts with Virtual Con (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADYwrZ787a0) held in March 2021. In the video, the question about Chaos Machine projects starts at around 23 minutes. Watch Jared’s face throughout Jensen’s whole answer. He’s nodding along, looking at his screen, and not even showing the slightest surprise in what Jensen is saying. He doesn’t because he already knows. To me, that is the face of someone who already knows what the other person is talking about. Jared already knows which projects Jensen is working on. He knows which alum he is talking about. So he just sits there and lets Jensen answer.  His quip at the end that he will also be acting in it is just that, a quip for the fans.  Because (supposedly) he is bound by a 5-year contract to CBS. He can not legally get involved in Jensen’s project with WB. He can acknowledge that he knows about it, but he has to show that he is absolutely not involved.
Next is the announcement of The Winchesters in June 2021 by Deadline. There were tweets by Jared that said he was upset that he didn’t know about it and that he wasn’t involved. There was also a tweet directed at Robbie Thompson calling him a back stabber that was later deleted. And, silence from Jensen, because he was unable to come online and address anything because he was on set in Canada.
Things were set in motion that were not meant to be put in motion for a while. I don’t think Chaos Machine was ready to start casting/filming yet. I think Jensen and Jared were trying to make it work with CBS so that Jared could be involved in the prequel. But those talks weren’t finished, or possibly even started yet. But the leak by Deadline, the WB/Discovery merger, and Mark Pedowitz leaving, combined to put pressure to do the show sooner, while Pedowitz was still in charge. If they waited, then nothing might come of Chaos Machine’s deal with WB once the new owners came in. Maybe they were waiting for Jensen to finish shooting The Boys to get together and talk about all this, but they still hadn't.
And this is what Jared was upset about. He thought there was time before the show would start, so was surprised that it was announced without him knowing. It also explains why he thought Robbie Thompson back-stabbed him. Because he was going to be a part of this show, and now he couldn’t. He couldn’t even say he had been part of the development from the beginning because it would be against his contract with CBS. He can’t even say wants to be a part of it now, because again, it would be against his contract with CBS. He’s upset, because he hasn’t had any communication from Jensen about this going through, and Jensen was also unreachable. So he vented online a little.
Once this narrative that Jared was never involved, and would not appear in it, spread, all of them had to run with it. Jensen apologized for not telling Jared. He said he was superstitious. He wanted to tell Jared, but he didn’t have his phone. That he was on set. That Jared couldn’t participate because he was busy. Etc. etc.
But, when Jared spoke with Jensen, and was (possibly) made aware that the news came out because it was leaked, and that they didn’t have time to clue Jared in, and (possibly) they were thinking of doing the show sooner because of WB, Pedowitz, Zaslav, etc., and that they were still in a holding phase, Jared forgave Jensen.
All of the above explains the inconsistencies and “lies” and “tantrums” and finally the forgiveness, and moving on.
I choose to believe that neither Jared nor Jensen are entitled assholes. They do not owe the fans any BTS details.
I’m sure people can tear this apart, but their theories don’t hold up either.

i’m trying to write a s15 fix it fic and i’m kinda stuck on what the ending for heaven should be. along with other smaller details i have figured out, i know jack’s not gonna be god, and neither will amara, but that means heaven can’t keep functioning as it has been, smth needs to change. i do have a few ideas, but i’m interested in what someone like you, who has a much more comprehensive knowledge of spn than i do, thinks. like how you wish the ending happened (other than dean living ofc), how you wish they handled the cosmic consequences of taking out chuck?
and ofc i won’t like steal your ideas! i’m just looking for inspiration and another perspective in order to flesh out my basic ideas
Well... to be honest, when I read fix it fics I often skip the world building aspects surrounding "new heaven structure". Honestly I'm more the kind of person to feel that part of the fun of fic is not having to do complicated world building and getting right into the character-oriented portions of the story. 😂
As far as my own wishes: I am a HUGE proponent of an open ending for Supernatural. Because Supernatural is about a battle between the concepts of Free Will and Destiny, and the final season, in particular, is about an evil author/god writing the characters lives, I feel the only narratively satisfying conclusion is one where even the irl author sets the characters free from their vision (after a certain point—obviously we want to have our fun and set the characters up for success). This is a HUGE issue with the actual series finale in my mind—that it attempts to write out the entirety of the characters lives even into eternity, entombing them in the author's vision with absolutely nothing left to the imagination when this show was MADE for a "ride off into the sunset" style ending because it's about free will. 15.20 simply was not that—it was far FAR too intrusive.
I mean to be totally honest because of its negative narrative significance, I kind of think heaven should simply implode. I think it would be very cathartic for everyone involved. The Winchester's provided (imo) an excellent landing pad for a fully canon-compliant fix-it fic where Dean once again tears apart the script. And yes—to me heaven is still someone else's script in 15.20, whether that was the authorial intent or not. Even if one isn't "Chuck won" truthing, one still has the line, "Cas helped" in 15.20—meaning that at the very least, Cas and Jack are trying to write paradise. They are trying to write The Future. (I discuss my criticisms of that here). This is also why the summary for my own WIP fix-it... looks like this:
Castiel abruptly drops the cassettes onto the kitchen table in a clatter, barely avoiding Mary’s morning coffee. “I need help understanding your son.”  Much to Castiel’s consternation, Dean… isn’t happy with the heaven Cas and Jack have designed and built for him. If that wasn’t clear enough from his preference for universe-hopping to alternate worlds over spending time in the heaven literally designed to be his personal peaceful paradise, or his in turns defiant and despondent attitude when grounded (read: when he hasn’t quite figured out how to chew through the plastic of his “cage” yet again)… it would be impossible for Cas to miss the fact that Dean will barely speak to him. Instead, he afflicts Castiel with one-track cassette tapes.
On a symbolic level, to me, heaven in SPN represents false paradise. It represents Free Will losing to Destiny. It’s a hopeless, helpless, ultimate: “No matter what you do, you will always end up here”. Even if you succeed at defying The Man in life, you will ultimately be forced back into a heaven where someone else’s vision for your life plays out for the rest of eternity, sold as "paradise". You will always end up back in The Beautiful Room. The afterlife doesn't have to be conceptualized that way, but I think the "new" heaven in 15.20 still heavily misses the mark for me in this regard, especially given the surrounding context.
All of that said, in a more general sense, I think what you do with heaven in a fix-it fic really depends heavily on what relational/emotional themes you're exploring in the fic. For example, say I want to write a fic where Dean reflects on his life being full of responsibilities that were too big and how this deeply warped his sense of self-worth. Say though that I largely explore Dean's feelings and reflections on this through Jack, in the present, cracking under the pressure of being expected to be God. A narratively satisfying ending to that fix-it might intentionally leave the question of what exactly becomes of heaven an open question, because the catharsis in the end is that it isn't Jack's (or anyone else in TFW's) responsibility to figure that out. To have Jack say "I'm trying so hard to make everyone happy everyone wants me to make paradise and I don't know how and I'm drowning", and for Dean to say "You don't have to make paradise. You don't have to do any of this. It isn't your job." Could be a very emotionally poignant conclusion to a fic that focuses on that theme.
I wonder if taking even a further step back would also help? By which I mean: the concept of a heaven as a whole, or hell, or purgatory... they're all assumedly of Chuck's design, and while that doesn't make having four afterlife locations (including The Empty) inherently bad, it also doesn't make make for inherently good design either—practically or ethically. The angels were having trouble keeping the lights on upstairs as their numbers dwindled, Purgatory is an absolute mess (think about where Garth and Bess and their kids will end up...) The only place possibly doing okay in the end is Hell, under Rowena's rule. Death had lots of concerns about balance between the various afterlife areas and I actually think it would be hilarious to give Death... 4.0? a heart attack by just being like "Well... what if we just got rid of some of these places? What if we were trying to stay upright and balance on a seesaw instead of on a ball that can turn in any direction? Do we really need a separate afterlife for monsters? Can heaven and hell just both be in the same place and Rowena and a few other people run it?" Though the need for a new Death could also mean... a new one comes in with a new idea about how to structure the afterlife, but then you also have to ask yourself how intricately you want to detail any of this. If your primary goal is to build the most comprehensive possible fix-it fic that addresses any conceivable question a reader might have about the new reason of the world, then you might finely detail the new concept of the afterlife. On the other hand, if you're more interested in exploring an emotional theme, it might make sense to have whatever happens or doesn't happen with heaven symbolize or relate to an emotional/relational theme within in your story.
Idk that was very rambly sorry I hope it helps a little with brainstorming!

Episode 104: 5.22 Swan Song
Welcome to the end of Kripke Era (sort of... he steps back, but is involved enough with s6 to have written 6.22... and he sticks around to help shape s7 before running off to Revolution and taking two free Led Zeppelin tracks with him... thanks for nothing, pal... >.>)
(aside to note i got my annual reminder that kripke is like two and a half weeks older than me while paying more attention than usual to write notes for this-- he gave the impala his own birthday, plus 7 years-- and i always feel like i’ve been mugged when i remember all of these facts)
So this is a fandom favorite, often cited at the top of Best Episode lists and I... don’t really like it much. Sorry! lol I am not sorry. It’s 15.20 turned inside out, with at least the veneer of a hopeful ending because *everyone was alive at the end of the episode so they could continue to live to fight another day.* Which is like one microstep above what 15.20 left us with >.>
Anyway, that’s probably enough side-eyes emoticons for one intro post, and I say more than enough in the episode itself. So let’s get to those links:

15.20 Carry On
Script:
If you want to read it offline, this is a useful tool.
Disclaimer: I (@lets-steal-an-archive) was, at the time it was listed on eBay, wary of the 15.19 and 15.20 listings and I still am uncomfortable including this script in the collection because I still suspect it is a reproduction made by someone who perhaps had access to watermarked originals that they retyped and then listed them on eBay as originals where they closed at around $2,000 each. They then offered pdfs for sale before the auction winners received the dead tree scripts they paid a fortune for (more than @spnscripthunt paid for any single script - $2,000 is more what people have paid, e.g. Shatner's 10.23, for scripts auctioned for charity). The winner of 15.20 reported the seller and received a full refund (and I'm glad they did, the whole thing was so sketchy). We have a 15.19 we know is legit and are holding out hope someone with a legit 15.20 will share a scan 🙏.

i don’t really go here anymore but i Literally do not care about the alternate version of the 15.20 script misha talked about during the con because i will never be happy with an ending that killed dean. i’ve talked about it before and explained why killing dean is the most disrespectful and disgusting message to the fans so i’m not rehashing it here. if you would have been satisfied with the ending solely if cas was in dean’s heaven then i can’t relate.

The Estimated Mathematics Of Sam’s Life Post-Dean:
Dean died when Sam was 37.
Tumblr media
If we go with the widely accepted fandom headcanon that Sam lived 40 years without Dean, then Sam died at age 77. (but he does look older, so one could estimate higher)
Tumblr media
Based on the actor’s age, Dean Jr was 26 when Sam died. (one could also estimate higher here, if you think the actor could pass for older)
Tumblr media
So 77 - 26 = Dean Jr was born when Sam was 51 (with blurry wife having to be 10+ years younger than him…like me). 14 years after Dean died.
Tumblr media
(14 years + however old Miracle was when the brothers took him in = it being perfectly reasonable and not at all a disservice to Miracle if he didn’t live to see Dean Jr born/take his first steps, so f*ck st@nds and their “Miracle deserved better” patch.)
Also, the script indicates that the events of 15.20 take place 6 months after the events of 15.19, but if you wanna go by Jensen and Jared’s headcanon that the episodes were 5 years apart, then: Sam was 42 when Dean died, 82 when he died(once again assuming he lived on for 40 years), and 56 when Dean Jr was born(which would still be 14 years after Deans death).

hey. hey pat.
look up.
ask old banned polol what the big shiny lights mean since you like to try to lean on them. ask em what a development klatch is while you’re there.
you lost before you ever heard there was a prequel.
If I hadn’t known you were too oblivious, I’d say sowing discontent in the server to begin with was methodical, but sorry. The drafts survived. No matter how many foot stomps and attempted deletions shook the server and development drives. The logistics, the mini bible, the proposals, it all made it. Both timelines. The storyboards. The arenas. Eat my shit. Seriously, fuck you.
go figure the closest you’ve ever been to success in being able to hurt the prequel is when you were oblivious to it. i must say that’s very on brand of you, patrick.
it’s like yall forgot how wayward started
i keep saying there’s no coming back from this for them but they refuse to accept it. It’s so wild. like you’re being given the warning to walk away on every front now.
I keep saying, over and over, reality isn’t gonna change for them, that this isn’t all speculation for all of us like it is for Pat, but he won’t shut the fuck up and listen.
you’ve been outnavigated for 2 years, you idiot
two years. there’s been two years of people pulling levers and you screaming in denial while you pretend to know what’s going on.
sorry pat
polol are the warriors that built this town.
bet your meet and greets didn’t tell you that.
dumb motherfucker’s arguing with me about my own variant storyboards
why’s he using the fandom developed pitch like bobo and wayward and not Jared’s? I don’t know. Fucking ask him. Maybe because we put the effort in to fully develop the concept but leave it open to reframing. They had the prequel element, the sequel element, the kid reboot angle all supplied to them and two angles to take the script, one post-15.18 and one 15.20 with two storyboard pitches towards the same goal, and no matter what happens, it’s the same fucking goal, you dumbass.
I know.
I wrote it.
I wrote it even while my development team argued the concept was too big for Supernatural and yet here it is.
Let me beat it into your skull a little bit more. Jensen isn’t who you parasocially think he is and try to find threads for in M&Gs. Figure out who he chose to work with. Christ.

this is on me, but I just finished my rewatch of spn INCLUDING episode 15.20 and just. what a weird episode. what a weird finale. story, script, pacing, music. so many weird and unsatisfying choices that were made on purpose. it's impossible to take seriously and impossible to believe in

Note
From the leaked script TW was set in the time between 15.19 and 15.20, so clearly he wasn't trying to "fix" the ending in that version. Then in the trailer we see the Impala's license plate is the KAZ 2Y5, implicating that it's taking place while Dean is in Heaven. So, their logic is he's fixing the ending, by doing a spin-off where he's playing Dean either before he had died or already had died.
I mean, the fundamental problem here is the phrase "their logic" because it implies that logic plays any significant part in their convoluted theories of how their ship STILL has to be made canon somehow.
If it was between 15.19 and 15.20? Jensen was totes going to "fix" it by rewriting things such that 15.20 never happened. Between telling the story about John & Mary, Dean would be working to save Castiel and it would result in a completely different ending where Dean lives happily ever after with Castiel on Earth!
Since the trailer appears to show Dean in heaven? Jensen is totes going to "fix" it by showing scenes of Dean making out with Castiel in heaven in between telling/learning John & Mary's story!
The part where Jensen has made it clear he was ultimately happy with the finale? The part where Jensen has never seen their ship as part of Dean's story? The part where he has multiple times gone on about loving John as a character and particularly feeling that John got an unfair rap in the later seasons, indicating he really was interested in this concept? The part where it's clear having Dean narrate is just a(n awkward AF) framing device? Nope! All that is completely irrelevant, Jensen is totally just in it to "fix" the finale!
