Distribution of the Ottoman cavalry, the Timar army in 1527. These timar cavalry were given income of a certain area in exchange for military service in war times. The one with more income had to join with one or more armed retainers, called cebelu.

Timar were also given to some fortress troops these didnt join the army in campaigns as cavalry. The number of armed retainers is sometimes estimated to be double of the timars. East Anatolia consists of the Eyalets (provinces) of Sivas, Karaman and Dulkadir. Source is from Ottoman Warfare, 1500-1700 by Rhoads Murphey , page 38

#this book is...weird.#although it is going a long way in explaining how the views of the hashtag chapuyscult have been shaped #yeah. i think by 1535 .#mary probably knew her mother's position was not 'unassailable'. considering she had atp been banished from court/forbidden #from henry's presence for like four and half years......#very weird to place that quote in a paragraph about 1527.#also chapuys did not advise her to repudiate her mother until whatever that was. late june/early july 1536.#so to frame this as mary ignoring sound advice because of her own stubborness seems disingenous to say the least #it does seem some of her own supporters advised this in 1534-35 absent chapuys but like grain of salt?#bcus this is what they were claiming while they were being interrogated during that period #her supporters were mid-1536 (so like elizabeth carew etc...)#plausible that was their claim for the sake of self-preservation. not what they had actually advised .
