Mongolia 1997 / 160423

i don’t normally write text but felt these needed some context:

I worked on a documentary in Mongolia in 1997. The country had only opened a few years earlier, so interesting times.

We drove across the gobi desert. Our Mongolian driver was obsessed with status quo. So a lot of these images are tainted by their sound track. ‘You’re in the army now’ very loud at 6am is hard to take

I returned the next year with the filmmaker polly Renton. our idea was to bring a bunch of uk musicians over to play with some of Mongolias finest. Obviously status quo. But we were also rather optimistically pitching mick jagger and the stones. they apparently were up for it but no broadcaster would touch it.

Polly went on to make more serious documentaries, moved to kenya and set up Medeva, training local journalists for many years

She tragically died along with her 4 year old daughter in road accident there in 2010
