Pomander For All Ages - BGC
(More pictures under the cut)
Before the revelation of Germ Theory in the mid-1800s, it was commonly believed that diseases such as the bubonic plague were caused by foul odors in the air. People would walk around with pomander necklaces stuffed with herbs held up to their noses to try to ward off the bad vapors. Though society didn't understand the role rats played in transmitting the plague (they carried the fleas which carried the bacteria Yersinia pestis), there was some correlation made between the rodents and the filthy environment.
The 17th century necklace I used as a reference comes from The Medicine Cabinet, and was most likely worn during the Great Plague of London in 1665. Comes in the Lustrous Metals palette.
