So um, in light of my last post I was inspired to look into other dsmp people's ages because I feel like we don’t really think about it too often and oh does it make things interesting…

Just for reference and consideration, here are some United States Legal Age Minimums:

Drive: 16-18

Adult: 18-21

Vote: 18

Drink Alcohol: 21

Political Office: 25 (Representative) 30 (Senator) 35 (President)

Military: 17-18

Also Note: On average the brain is scientifically not fully developed until age 25 - and oh wouldn't you know it 90% of the server fall under that, meaning no wonder we have a bunch of wars their prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed and wouldn't you know it that part of the brain is responsible for regulating attention, behavior, and emotion as well as the processing that Actions Have Consequences... huh whelp that makes sense.

Anyways… age data is below (I didn't do everyone nor every event - nobody got time for that ;D... I didn't have time for this to begin with lol...) But I specifically want to highlight that not only was Dream 21 from Jan-Aug of his Imprisonment, but Sam was also 21 till Jun, and Quackity was literally 20 while he was daily torturing Dream... 20?! They were roughly a year apart, all of them so close. Like can you imagine, treating your peer like that? Sam is like a couple months older than Dream and that's it. Quackity can't even drink legally in the United States. That's insane...

Canonical Batfamily Birthdays

Here are all the birthdates I know of that are canon somewhere in DC, with a preference for the main comics continuities. I have included exact sources and image references when possible. I am not including character introduction dates, just actual birthdays.

If you find any other sources for Batfamily birthdays, please do share!

A moment of silence for Batfamily characters who don’t have canonical birthdays yet, so far as I know. This includes Damian Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and more. :(

Summary

Source images will be further down, but here’s an overview in roughly age order (I’m not sure of Kate vs Selina’s ages) with the dates the birthdays were introduced and used:

Tim Drake: July 19th (from 2003)

Jason Todd: August 16th (from 2004)

Cassandra Cain: January 26th (from 2002)

Helena Bertinelli: February 14th (in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold universe, from 2010)

Helena Wayne: September 7th (from 1984), potentially October 20th or the 22nd of unknown month or maybe October 22 or maybe Feb 28th (all the New 52 on passports from 2011-2012). These could also be New 52 Helena Bertinelli’s birthdays or nobody’s birthdays. who even knows.

Note: in this post when I say “main comics continuity(s)/universe” I’m referring to anything that’s been a “home” continuity for the comics at some point. For example, pre-Crisis Earth-2, Earth-1/New Earth, and Earth-0/Prime Earth, as opposed to Elseworlds or DCEU earths that are still part of the broader DC multiverse but have never been the primary continuity of the comics.

Tim Drake

Tim has only been given one canon birthday. He turned 16 on July 19th in Robin Vol. 2 #116 (cover date Sep 2003).

Jason Todd

Jason turned 18 on August 16th in Detective Comics #790 (March 2004). This is his only canon birthday.

In post-Crisis/preboot (1986-2011) continuity, there was a gap of six months between when Jason died and when he was resurrected (Batman Annual 25). Jason died April 27th according to his death certificates in Batman Annual 25 and Batman Files 2011, so he would’ve resurrected near late October.

So, it could be that post-resurrection Jason is biologically 6 months younger than he chronologically should be. But honestly, do we even really know what multiverse-breaking resurrection punches and then a Lazarus Pit on top of that do to someone’s body??? Either way it’s just much more simple to just use his chronological age.

Cassandra Cain

Much like Tim and Jason, Cass has only ever been given one birthdate: January 26th from Batgirl Vol. 1 #33. With that birthday, she turned 18 in Batgirl Vol. 1 #37.

When Jan 26th actually comes, Bruce suggests David Cain could’ve lied about it, but Cass denies that idea and continues to treat the day as her birthday.

Why it's likely her real birthday: Bruce initially believes Cain must’ve lied because he doesn’t think Cain could’ve known her birthday. However, we later learn Cain had lied about her origins and was actually her biological father. Batgirl v1 #62 and #73 show he was there for her birth and could absolutely know the date.

On top of that, in Batgirl #37 Cass remembers celebrating her birthday with him as a child, so he did seem to actually keep track of it. I honestly don’t see any reason to believe he’d lie (Bruce is just a jealous spoilsport).

Helena Bertinelli + Wayne

I’m combining them here because the New 52 gives me a headache.

Helena Bertinelli celebrated her birthday on February 14th in a spin-off comic from the animated Batman: The Brave and the Bold series. This is obviously not part of regular comics continuity and the characters differ from the usual comics in many ways. And yet, for reasons that will soon be clear, it’s my favorite for actually being about Helena Bertinelli the Huntress and for not being an utter mess.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #14 (Apr 2010)

In a character profile at the end of Infinity Inc. #7 (Oct 1984), Helena Wayne’s birthday was September 7th, 1959. Calculating back from October 1984, that would make her 25 at the time.

During the New 52, Helena Bertinelli was initially portrayed as a long-dead (secretly alive but don’t worry about it) mobster’s daughter and replaced by Earth-2’s Helena Wayne who got stranded on Prime Earth. This H. Wayne stole H. Bertinelli’s identity in the form of several forged passports and IDs, which had hints toward birthdates. The question is, can we take any of those birthdates seriously, and if so, which birthdates and for which character? (Cue my headache.)

Skip ahead to Dick if overthinking fake passports sounds boring.

When comparing to a real Italian passport, the date on H. Wayne’s fake Italian passport appears to be a birthdate. Note that the fake name is Carol Bertinelli, not Helena. H. Wayne said her IDs were inspired by H. Bertinelli but clearly she’s taking liberties for the IDs so that’s a point toward these being useless for H. Bertinelli birthdays.

Huntress Vol. 3 #1 (Dec 2011)

I don’t recognize the month abbreviation as a real abbreviation, but from the visible letter O I’m going to assume it means October. If it is, then the date is 20 October 1985. Sidenote: a 1985 birthdate during 2011 could put her age at about 26, which is actually quite close to how old she could’ve been based on pre-Flashpoint! 1985 has been given as Helena Wayne’s death year before, so it’s an interesting choice of a birth year for her. (Thanks to DC’s sliding timescale, though, birth years don’t actually mean anything in the comics.)

They don’t show her complete US passport, but I can see a “22” in line where the day of the month should be for her birthdate. This already contradicts the previous passport. This one uses Helena Bertinelli’s actual name, though–does that make it more relevant than the Carol one or this all still ridiculous because of the discrepancies?

Worlds’ Finest Vol. 1 #1 (Jul 2012)

We can try to glean the US passport birth month from the passport number at the bottom. The first two digits (“12” here) indicate the agency that issued the passport. 12 means the Honolulu agency. Right after “USA” is supposed to be the birthdate plus an extra number, in the order of year/month/day with the year being the last two digits of a year. Here we encounter another problem. It says 810228. This would imply her birthdate is 1981/02/28. That’s February 28, 1981. Since the earlier line indicated her birthday fell on a 22nd, this already contradicts itself.

However, I’d bet comic writers and artists aren’t always well versed in passport numbers (it’s already a stretch for me to bother checking it…). If they put the extra digit before the birthdate instead after, and the date is formatted month/day/year (the most common format in American English, so probably their first instinct), then we can drop the first 8 and it’s 10/22/8[?] with the last digit unknown. This would put her birthday as October 22, sometime in the 1980s. The 22 matches the earlier line, the October might match the previous passport if that really did say October (but contradicts the 20th), and the 1980s year could be 1985 to match the Italian passport.

At the end of the day I’m personally just going to let Helena Bertinelli be a Valentine’s born baby and call it a day, unless/until she gets a better one in the comics. For Helena Wayne I’d easily pick September 7th.

(My question is: did they give the crossbow vigilante a Valentine’s birthday as a Cupid joke??)

Dick Grayson

Dick has probably had the most birthdays of everyone (unless Bruce has more I don’t know about). All of them have their drawbacks.

In a main comics continuity, his most popular and most recent is “the first day of spring” so probably March 20th. This comes from Robin Annual 4 when his mom says she calls him Robin because he was born on the first day of spring. That presents some problems since there are other explanations given for the origin of “Robin,” including that his mom said he was “always bobbin’ along” (Dark Victory #12, page 17) or the original inspiration of Robin Hood (Detective Comics #38, p3).

Before that, in Secret Origins Vol. 2 #50 (Aug 1990), Marv Wolfman wrote a version of Dick’s origins where Dick turned 10 a week before his parents died on Halloween. That would make his birthday October ~24th (presuming that “a week” before Halloween literally means 7 days here).

The first drawback of the October birthday is that it’s tied to Dick being 10 when his parents die on Halloween. Dick’s age and the date his parents die change a lot depending on the writer (Nightwing Vol. 1 #1 says his parents died June 27th, Dark Victory #8-9 says May, etc.). The second drawback is that few people remember this version of his birthday even exists.

Dick’s birthday is November 11th in Super DC Calendar 1976. Note: Despite being a non-diegetic calendar from almost 50 years ago, this source remains well known and used among comic enthusiasts (including those working at DC). Generally, I would say it should mainly apply just to pre-Crisis continuity, but it is also useful for characters that haven’t gotten updated birthdays ever since (like Roy Harper, Barbara Gordon, or Selina Kyle, for example).

Sidenote: Since Damian doesn’t have a canon birthday, November 11th is favorite to steal for my own fan canon Damian birthday. Dick has plenty birthdays to share and I think it’s cute. @ DC, give Damian and Steph birthdays, they’ve been birthday-less for decades!

Indeed, DC writer Tim Sheridan and editor Mike Cotton debated whether Dick’s birthday was in March or November. They favored March 20th and wrote a birthday scene in Teen Titans Academy #1 (published March 23rd, 2021). The publishing time near Dick’s birthday was intentional, though the date isn’t mentioned within the comic itself.

The above birthdays were all meant to apply to a main comics continuity at some point. However, Earth-16, better known as the animated Young Justice universe (therefore outside of main comics continuity), says YJ Dick’s birthday is December 1st.

Unlike Helena Bertinelli, Dick has plenty of comics birthdays to choose from, so personally I’ll only count Dec 1st as being the birthday for YJ animated/Earth-16 Dick Grayson until or unless it’s ever mentioned to apply to main comics continuity.

Barbara Gordon

Super DC Calendar 1976 says Barbara’s birthday is September 23rd.

Since then, the only time I recall her birthdate hinted at is in Secret Origins #20 when her adoptive mom says her birthday is in the fall. This could support her birthday being September 23rd.

Although she has celebrated her birthday on panel since then (the end of Nightwing Vol. 2 #153), she hasn’t been given any other actual birthdate. So I’ll keep September 23rd and call it a day.

Selina Kyle

Super DC Calendar 1976 says Selina’s birthday is March 14th. Once again, although it hasn’t been mentioned within a comic, it’s stuck around in popular consciousness (see: Catwoman actress Zoë Kravitz wishing Selina a happy birthday on March 14th).

Selina celebrated a birthday on panel in Catwoman (2002) #37 but the date was never mentioned. I don’t know of any other reference to her birthday, but my reading of Selina is thus far more sparse than my reading of the others.

Kate Kane

Kate’s birthday options all come from outside of the comics themselves.

In “An Un-Birthday Present,” season 1 episode 11 of Batwoman, a parallel version of her twin Beth had a driver’s license showing her date of birth as January 26, 1990. She and Kate later celebrated their birthdays on an episode aired Jan 26th, 2020. I don’t keep up with live action DC shows so I unfortunately can’t offer a screenshot (if anyone has one or the timestamp, please let me know!).

(I kinda wonder if somebody looked up Batwoman’s birthday for these episodes, saw Batgirl’s (Cass’s) birthday, and just ran with it. Batwoman and a Batgirl sharing a birthday is just. Ughhh.)

In 2012, one of her comic writers tweeted to choose a random date for her birthday and picked March 21st, which so far as I know has never been used as her birthday in comics.

Bruce Wayne

Bruce’s most popular birthday is February 19th, but his most recent one is October 7th from the digital-only comic Legends of the Dark Knight. I believe that’s the only time October 7th has been referenced, but I’ve heard the animated show The Batman said his birthday was in October (can’t confirm, haven’t watched it recently).

Still, even associates of DC seem to remember his February 19th birthday better. In February 2023, Warner Bro’s Gotham Knights game did a sale for Bruce’s birthday. I’ve also heard the birthday was used in the Gotham TV show, but again, I don’t watch much live action DC shows.

The February 19th birthday appears to come from the 70s and 80s. It’s his birthday in the Super DC Calendar 1976, and in Batman Family Vol. 1 #11: “Suprise, Suprise!” (May 1977). Bob Rozakis (known as DC’s “Answer Man”) said Feb 19th was Bruce’s birthday in the letter column of Detective Comics #494 (Sep 1980).

Batman Family Vol. 1 #11: “Suprise, Suprise!” (Jun 1977)

Way back in the 40s, his birthday was in April, possibly April 7th. During a birthstone murder mystery, Bruce says his birthstone is a diamond, which is traditionally the April birthstone.

World’s Finest Comics #33/6 (Mar-Apr 1948): “The 5 Jewels of Doom!”

Star Spangled Comics #91 (Apr 1949) might imply the exact date was April 7th but we’d have to assume the party is on his birthday and that “this month” refers to the publishing month of April. I believe this is where people get the April 7th birthday when they bring it up.

Early April also shines in Batman: Year One where it shows Bruce’s first night out as Batman being either the night of April 6th or the early morning of April 7th (Batman #405). So although the April Bruce birthday hasn’t been used in decades, it’s still a Batman birthday in a way.

I have also heard people say Frank Miller considered Bruce’s birthday to be in November. However, I have yet to find an original source of him saying that, and honestly (just like the “March 21st” birthday for Kate) if he never used it in any canon material I don’t put much weight in that.

Jim Gordon

The only birthday I’ve ever seen for Jim is January 5th from Super DC Calendar 1976.

Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred’s birthday in Super DC Calendar 1976 is April 8th.

In the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe (an alternate reality where the video game of the same name is set in), they show Alfred’s birth certificate, where it says his birthday is August 16th, 1943.

Maybe you’ll notice that August 16th is Jason’s birthday. A little funny considering the issue features Alfred refusing to share his birthday only for us to learn it’s the same date as Jason’s. Still, annoying. There are so many days in the year! Stop choosing the same ones!

This Alfred birthdate runs into a similar problem Helena’s birthdates did: it’s not part of main comics canon, it’s an alternate universe, so it may not be applicable to the main comics universe.

Note: if we calculate that 1943 birth year from Jun 2016 when the comic was published, that’d make Alfred 72 soon to be 73. Does that mean anything in canon? Probably not, but oh well. Also...token British character born by Windsor Castle? …of course.

Personally, I would rather go with the April 8th birthday than the Injustice one, since Injustice is an alternate universe. Also, outside of the humor of it, the idea of Alfred and Jason sharing a birthday is a bit too much for me. Still, it’s up to people’s own cherry picking.

Chronology

The birthdays in publishing order alongside notable reboots. A soft-reboot refers to reboots that only changed a few details with minor consequences, keeping the overall continuity mostly intact. A major reboot has significant effects on continuity (too many to list).

1935-1986: Pre-Crisis era (Golden Age begins ~1946, Silver Age runs from late 50s--early 70s)

every time someone says they became a taylor fan bc of this fic we grow more powerful >:) so glad to hear! welcome to the brainrot 🫡 as for their favs, we talked abt their fav albums a while back but that was a While Back and i never deny an opportunity to talk acswy party x taylor so here are what we think their favs would be:

el: speak now stan first and human being second. she’s just like me <3 no notes here her taste is immaculate. she did in fact shell out for the merch earlier this summer

max: rep girly through and through (both the album and the vibes of the Era) but i think she holds a very soft spot for lover (specifically after she and lucas start dating). loves call it what you want bc she is a not so secret softie

lucas: lover! not a huge fan but got introduced to taylor more through max and naturally gravitated towards lover. i’ve said this before and i’ve said this again but his fav track off of it is def i think he knows. he got my heart! beat! skipping down 16th avenue! etc so on and so forth

dustin: not a huge taylor Fan for the most part. likes her more popular hits and therefore probably 1989 if he had to pick an album. however he can also be found listening to very random debut tracks that no one else in the party ever really listens to. his spotify listening activity will show him listening to cold as you for three hours and everyone thinks it’s a glitch (it’s not). also a should’ve said no enjoyer. he and el scream it in the car a lot

will: tells everyone it’s folklore for the lyricism and whatnot (it’s mostly true) but he holds a special spot for red tv that he conveniently does not mention (specifically the breakup songs) (#andyoucallmeupagainjusttobreakmelikeapromise). mostly bc of the timing of when it dropped but also bc red tv is a masterpiece and he is putting some well deserved respect on its name. el and max know his secret though bc they had to listen to him listening to it on loop for nov-december 2021 and then it carried over into jan 2022 before they finally staged an intervention

mike: if he had to choose an Album it would prob be evermore but i think his favorite songs are scattered throughout the rest of her discography! to meeeee he is a mine enjoyer, as well as delicate, hygtg, so on and so forth. is not allowed to listen to this is me trying anymore for his own safety (lucas keeps tabs on his spotify activity). also to me mike is a pop punk enjoyer so i think speak now’s sound really draws him in as well! definitely got excited over fob + hayley’s features on the vault tracks

This year OJTW will run from 24th of April to 30th of April.

And so it’s time for prompt submissions! Submit them here, in my ask box. Prompt submissions will be accepted from now through to the 15th of Jan.

Prompts can be as simple as ‘wing fic’ or as complex as ‘Jason’s pack grooms his wings after a panic attack’, but I will collate prompts around similar subjects for ease of voting, and the more complex your prompt is, the more likely it is that its core concept has been submitted elsewhere. OJTW is an all-ships event, so please don’t submit prompts requesting specific people (general categories like ‘JL member’ or ‘a Rogue’ are fine, however). Feel free to prompt NSFW and dark concepts, OJTW has had many of those before and doubtless we’ll have them again.

Falling In Reverse - "Live From The Unknown" Stream - Parts I-II

Falling In Reverse released a live concert stream named "Live From The Unknown" during the COVID lockdown, which was distributed on their stream channel on April 16th and April 30th, 2021.

The footage of this live stream wasn't available on the internet until this year, when it suddenly appeared on YouTube, uploaded by a random user. (The audio extract was already on YouTube before.)

My 2023 item review - Dockable Case (w/ Screen Protector and Thumb Grips) - Part 2/Final [Jan. 9th, 2023]

Back for this continuing review, my friends! While already covered the first parter back in Jan. 26th, I’m still catching up to do by installing my Switch system alongside my Joy-Cons. Before of doing that though, I wanted to make sure my Switch system needs cleaning and dusting. Which we’re in for today’s continuing review. However expect this one will be the final before moving to other items I’m eager to share.

⬆️ 14th through 15th Images

Here you can see I’ve two different wipes, a dust absorber, a cloth, and a screen protector onto my Switch for cleaning. There were came from the box after opening, BTW. Anyways, I handle well with the cleaning, wiping, and picking dust that I know what these are use for. At least I took about few minutes before moving to install the screen protector next.

Now for the next one, I’ve been carefully to install a screen protector on my Switch system. It’s a good thing I did just a bit right, but got it fit nonetheless. Though I recommend some stickers and an alignment frame tool for extra help. At least if I had the alignment frame tool for my Switch system, but I haven’t. 😅

⬆️ 17th through 19th Image Nevertheless, at least now I’m moving on to placing the dockable case shorty afterwards. I started on the back where I needed to be careful of installing. Thankfully as always, it fit right in where I took some time of showing off. Though I would’ve prefer changing the color for my dockable case than this, but probably next time. Regardless, it does stand out as I expected; especially for the material as I holding with my hands. I’ll get to that for later.

I’m now doing with my Joy-Cons that needed covering, but hold on. You may asking “are these new Joy-Cons instead of my original Joy-Cons? The gray ones?” Well ever since my original Joy-Cons had been worn out a bit; especially the last time where I show off the R button from the right sided Joy-Con. ➡️ Link Here

Not only that, It also came with an issue of stick drift which is unfortunate. Though I know I should get it fix by watching some tutorial videos like VK’s YouTube Channel if learning right. (Don’t know of fixing the R button, though) Nevertheless, I asked my mom to buy me second set of Joy-Cons; which happened back in April. 13th, 2021. That’s my story of it, but hoping to expect as I going through this review and saving my new Joy-Cons test later soon.

Anyways, back to setting up my new Joy-Cons to cover up; which I have when placing from bottom to top. Though I had to switch up from top to bottom, but at least fits right up as well. Just making sure it doesn’t have some scratches for each Joy-Cons. On the plus side, it’s what I’m hoping for so I don’t leave out any smudge stuff when holding my hands. Mostly my right sided Joy-Con when I’m pressing the A button for example.

And now it’s finally completed! All secure with a screen protector upfront. As I picked up with my hands, it felt smooth due to the materials of my dockable case. I looked up that it made with "shock-absorbent and anti-scratch PC" material. Sounds promising, right? I'll see if it can hold up until I'll get a new case soon. This time, I’m picking a theme like blue or the Super Mario themed case.

Not done with this review though, I have a set of joy-con thumb grips/caps to pick on. There are ten total of caps in two each: red, blue, black, and purple with paws. The difference between four black caps is smaller while the other was a bit big; though at least not way too big. If I had to pick though is going with red and blue for each joy-cons. Does make sense of having both new controllers I’m having. However how well protective for each controlling sticks on top? They’re pretty alright that it made in different material. I tested out when pressing and moving them; especially in games like Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Very appreciate of using the caps so far, but I’m okay with the red and blue ones.

My Overall Thoughts: After owning one of last year’s Christmas gifts, the dockable case and other accessories is something I’m hoping for. These includes a screen protector right after cleaning and ten total thumb grips/caps. The main item itself though was good too. It’s made with "shock-absorbent and anti-scratch PC", but felt smooth when holding both hands as to playing games in handheld mode. Do hope this holds longer as it should and to everyone can get one of those. If you had your Nintendo Switches that is. My mom ordered from Amazon.com, BTW. ⬇️

i guess i should say that i feel a little emotional, yeah?

in some aspects i missed out greatly with dreamsmp. i never saw nov 16th live, or the exile streams, or even the disc finale. i fell in love with this little server afterwords, when all the highs had already happened.

i joined late jan 2021 by happenstance. i saw one of sad-ist's animations in my youtube recommend and i finally decided to give it a watch. then i saw the other two that were out at the time. and i caved in.

the first Major lore stream i watched live was c!tommy's visits to the prison. and his death. and his revival. i was hooked.

i followed blogs here on tumblr and followed all the ccs on every social media account they had.

i got invited to flycord! friggin flycord!!! and i met so many wonderful people there!

i met my pals @sunlitmcgee, and @tobi-smp and they are some of my best friends!

i made so much art, over the course of dsmp's life i made over 200 pieces of art (and counting.)

i bought so much merch, none of it i am Ever getting rid of. my l'manburg flag hangs proudly on my wall still.

i hum the l'manburg anthem every now and then, and even the beginning notes of "Hit the Road Jack". bc it all mattered to me.

there are some parts of me that will forever be bitter about the constant hiatuses, the shitty finale, and well. green boy himself.

but there's also parts of me that will always be happy abt this server. i got to know about Techno and watch his streams and videos before he died, i grew attached to the characters (c!tommy is my son), i am in the process of writing a finale fix-it that i am putting my all into.

and for what it's worth, everything was worth it. everything was worth the 2 years i put my heart and soul into this fandom and i wouldn't trade it for anything.

Why the c!Sapnap and c!Tommy conversation before Doomsday is so important

[Quick note, I use the term season 2 to refer to the period between the November 16th war and the disc war finale on Jan 20th 2021 as I find it useful in discussion of Tommy’s arc.]

Hey there, so I wanted to discuss one of my favourite conversations (From roughly 10:45-13:44). This scene isn’t all that long or really critical to the greater narrative yet it still serves a really important function which I thought I’d highlight.

So, it’s the Doomsday stream. Technoblade and Dream are preparing to attack New L’Manberg. Tommy is, of course, against them. And Tommy begins his stream by asking to speak with Sapnap (6:40-7:50).

He proceeds to jump into the ocean in order to search for Mars, Sapnap’s old fish that they released together on November 15th (Roughly 1:27:30-1:31:00), the day before the last war over L’Manburg. And this conversation is very much a callback to it. They’re good parallels to bring up now too, the previous conversation was very much an agreement to end the pet wars for good and to cease hostilities between them so they could maybe be friends in the future though they were on different sides back then. This current conversation is Tommy inviting Sapnap to be his ally and have them fight together as friends. Sapnap accepts his apology and accepts his fish back and agrees to help Tommy in his fight.

Now, Tommy is the only one streaming here of the pair and its a very big stream for Tommy but this also is only the start of the stream and Sapnap has not been a major player in Tommy’s season 2 arc so this conversation is important but it’s not built to be a big critical moment like the later conversations he has with Technoblade and Dream later, two characters which his season 2 arc revolves around. So this isn’t a conversation you would expect to see any big turning points in his arc but some character continuity would be really lovely here. Essentially, you want each conversation he has to support his ongoing arc and solidify his character and its development even though that’s not the true purpose of this conversation.

And indeed, this conversation is welcome although it is not critical to Tommy’s season 2 arc. It does indeed link to the established key themes, namely it explores attachments* and making amends**. These are already well-established but scenes like these are always helpful to reinforce them. And its a positive scene which is always useful in reminding the audience that you want to root for Tommy’s character and that he’s grown over the course of the series even as other scenes will also remind you of how he’s flawed and developing.

All this is stuff that makes it a good, consistent scene but not unique nor why its actually important to the narrative. After all, this scene takes place on Doomsday, a very plot heavy stream where time is precious, and time spent talking to Sapnap about Mars could’ve been spent prepping for the battle and chatting to the rest of his allies, which he lacks time for despite how pressing it is. Or it could have been spent further talking to Tubbo as their pre-Doomsday chat is rather brief (2:27-5:25) given what a huge turning point had occurred the day before and how central his relationship to Tubbo is to his story.

What makes this brief conversation so valuable is how it provides Sapnap’s character strong motivations to participate in the doomsday stream.

One of the challenges in huge events is including as many characters as possible. Many characters want to be involved in these big events but not all of them are given the most useful motivations to really justify their involvement. It leaves them awkwardly trying to give themselves motivations to be involved without necessarily having it be natural for their character. The more forced it is, the less engaging their perspective will be.

Without this brief, five-minute interaction, Sapnap’s character likely would’ve stayed on the sidelines. His character even says he intends to be neutral before Tommy talks to him the day before. Optionally, he might’ve still taken the same role and fought alongside Tommy but with far less justification for it meaning it’s much less impactful.

Remaining on the sidelines might be logical and sensible from an in-character perspective, but it tends to be far more exciting from a content perspective if a character chooses a strong side and fights for it. (As a sidenote, Ranboo’s Doomsday stance is not an example of this. His character had a strong conviction of choosing to see that there are no sides which is a choice built on strong motivations, very much distinct from being on the sidelines without taking a strong stance. As such his Doomsday POV is very significant.) All characters should want to be involved if they can, with proper motivations. This helps the event to feel bigger rather than restricted to just a few key players though naturally some players will have a larger role in an event than others.

I love this conversation as in a very brief amount of time, while remaining consistent with the ongoing arc and its themes, it offers Sapnap a really strong motivation to be involved in the upcoming Doomsday fight and solidifies his friendship with Tommy’s character. This leads to some highlights such as Technoblade and Sapnap fighting, where he comes close to killing Techno. (About 51:50) There’s also moments where Tommy calls for his help and Sapnap’s there for him. (27:20-27:35) Thanks to that earlier scene, Sapnap is a highly motivated distinctive player on Doomsday which is absolutely ideal. He didn’t just turn up to the event, he was a part of it.

Doomsday of course ends with New L’Manburg’s destruction so Sapnap’s presence does nothing to change its fate and so it might seem wasted by the narrative in that moment. It might seem like making this new alliance was pointless if it immediately fails. Yet this moment is not forgotten and continues to matter beyond Doomsday as it goes on to have further payoff in Tommy’s season 2 finale where Sapnap appears to directly support Tommy against Dream and the characters are finally rewarded with a victory. So not only does it improve the doomsday stream, but it has relevance later and indeed is a permanent change in Tommy and Sapnap’s relationship.

*Attachments are very important in Tommy’s arc. Like how Dream states he only cares about Tommy’s discs when Tommy threatens to burn Spirit. (39:40-41:00) And Tommy’s disc finale is practically built around this. See Dream’s attachment speech. (46:00-48:20).

**Exploring apologies and forgiveness also comes up frequently. Eg: Tommy making Tubbo a gift as a sort of apology while not really being sorry pre exile (1:22:12-1:25:50) . Tommy awkwardly yet genuinely trying to apologise to Tubbo and finding the subject too much. (58:02-58:32) Tommy refusing to apologise to Sapnap and Sapnap killing his horse. (42:42-49:30 long clip as server crash mid convo xD)
