Chapitre 183 - The World of Sand 

In which ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THIS IS INCREDIBLE. 

BLACK AND WHITE INVERSE COLOUR SAKURA AND SYAORANS? OHHHHH CLAMP ARE GENEROUS. CLAMP ARE GIVING.

Even just how each couple is wearing the colour opposite to their background, but also the opposite of the opposing pair.

And how the feathers are in the SAME but OPPOSITE part of the page for each side, showing that they are visual inversions of each other’s reality, but the feathers don’t look the same, and are shown at unique angles. Potentially they’re falling on one side but rising on the other. Potentially it’s the same for each, but its showing that neither story is complete without the perspective of the other. 

And how the small circles on the right are small and clearly defined against the background - perhaps falling water droplets, like the falling feathers around them? - while the ones on the left are fuzzy shiny orbs, like motes of air or magic rising through the sky. I think the implication of movement is a bit open to interpretation, you could go either way. IS one side falling and the other rising? Is the fate of that Sakura/Syaoran pair falling downward while the other rises? Is one falling to ALLOW the other to rise? Is one pair doomed by fate BECAUSE they are clones? Or are they drifting down and out of the narrative and into freedom, while the other pair takes up the fight in their stead? Is one background Black because their future is dark, or because they CAME from that darkness, as created tools of Evil Wolverine? Or is it their clothes that matter? Are they the light in the dark, the fragments of people who fought to change the future despite their origins? White clothing because they were initially empty and devoid of anything? Is the other background similarly white because it hasn’t been written yet - a future so undefined that no-one can tell what it will be when this is all over?

Are the circles actually heading in the same direction on both sides of the page, and the difference is how they are perceived? How one stands out against the darkness while the other needs help to be seen at all? The clones WERE the most visible throughout most of the story, and only through their existence did the other pair get the chance to enter the narrative again.

And OH all that gorgeous golden ornamentation, the gem colours actually staying the same on both sides of the page. The clasp on Syaoran’s upper arm is the same symbol as on the previous cover, on Fai and Kurogane's clothing, which is a very fun connection that shows it wasn’t just an alternate world we didn’t see, but an intended shared thread of imagery for them all. 

The long pieces of jewellery that the Sakuras wear are gorgeous and delicate and intricate. It could be echoing the design of vines and natural growth - perhaps because she can communicate with spirits, and is in touch with the natural world, or perhaps because she is a desert flower herself, growing out of a literal world of sand but also blooming despite the extreme adversity, and blossoming out of pure determination. It also has visual echoes of imprisonment - it circles her neck not at a low level like a necklace, but high like a collar. It spreads across her like roots, holding her in place - or is it the opposite of that now? Is she, aware of her fate as she is, wearing Evil Wolverine’s designs like they're just a gown to be worn? Something she can’t take off but has learned to make work for her?

The Syaorans have a circular loop in the design of their coat around their necks as well - because they’ve been just as trapped in Evil Wolverine’s schemes. For the Syaoran on the right especially the loop around his neck has two circular gems visible that could echo the same shape as the goggles he used to wear, bringing in an element of the past that shaped who he is but at the same time was a design placed on him from birth, one that was all by someone else’s plan. 

AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM. The colour version lets you see the heterochromia in Syaoran's eyes on the right, showing which pair is which, and the DIFFERENCES in how they stand. (If they ARE in the pairs you would expect) Clone Sakura looks down, as if unfocussed, because she IS currently narratively dead. Or is she instead gazing at her hand, being held by Syaoran? She has wanted this so desperately and for so long. Does she look sad because she is currently dead, meaning they might never be actually together? Is she unfocussed because she has not yet had the chance to truly see that her sacrifice worked, and that Syaoran really has been restored? Either way, Syaoran holds her hand up in support, gently from below. 

The Syaoran on the left holds the other Sakura’s hand up close to his chest, hand clenched tight. This Sakura and Syaoran both look ahead - at where they are going? At what lies ahead for them both? Neither looks especially happy, but neither looks especially unhappy either. Lava Lamp has always been particularly unreadable, but the way he grasps her hand betrays how hard he’s been fighting for her. Sakura in turn looks just as unfocussed as her counterpart - and if Evil Wolverine is to be believed, it’s because she’s also dead. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS THOUGH. She could potentially be in dreams, asleep for the entire plotline, held as a backup until they free her. She is not particularly aware that her hand is being held, and isn’t participating in the motion like the other Sakura seems to be, but she looks ahead all the same. Whatever they're looking at, they're clearly moving in a different direction entirely to their clone counterparts.

Meanwhile Clone Syaoran looks directly at the camera.

Hozier Reading List of Free Texts You Can Finish in Less Than A Week

Another Hozier reading list is floating around the Internet, and it’s very thorough. Huge respect to @notmysophie for putting that together, they put in a lot of effort and research and it really shows. This is an alternative reading list for people who are too busy or tired to read all the entries on a complete list of Hozier’s literary influences. This list is incomplete—even after finishing it, there will be some very prominent literary references in Hozier’s music that might go over your head. But this will definitely help you appreciate the depth of thought in his songs, and if you read just five pages a night, you’ll be able to finish this reading list in less than one week. 

ONE: ICARUS

Hozier puts the myth of Icarus to song in I, Carrion. You could very easily argue that Sunlight is also a response to Icarus. Many classical writers have told or mentioned his story, but I’ll let my own personal tastes shape this list, and recommend Ovid’s Metamorphoses. He tells the story of Icarus in Chapter 8 Lines 183–235. If you can afford it, I love the Charles Martin translation. You could consult the free Brookes More translation, or the one by A. S. Kline. Remember, you don't have to read the whole chapter--just find the part named "Daedalus and Icarus"

TWO: DOOMSDAY CLOCK

The title track Wasteland, Baby! is such a gentle love ballad, I almost have trouble remembering it’s about the apocalypse. Wasteland, Baby! finds hope and love in the face of annihilation. Hozier wrote this song as a direct response to the Doomsday Clock moving two minutes in 2018, one year before the album was released. 

THREE: GENESIS 1-3

I also recommend reading Genesis Chapters 1-3. You’re probably familiar with the plot, but I think From Eden is such an ingenious twist on the familiar story that you’ll appreciate it even more after consulting the original. Hozier takes the symbols of Genesis 1-3 and uses them to make his own radically different point. The stories of Eden also come up in Be. 

My favorite translation is by Robert Alter, but it’s currently not free online, so you might want to check out the Sefaria translation or the New King James Version (NKJV), both of which manage to capture the beauty of Genesis without becoming difficult for the average English reader. The King James Version (KJV) is also roughly the same level of difficulty as a Shakespeare play. I definitely think the KJV is beautiful, but at the end of a long hard day, you might be better off with the Sefaria, the NKJV, the NIV, or the NRSV. You can Google “Genesis 1” followed by any of those names/abbreviations, and you’ll find it right away. 

FOUR: A MODEST PROPOSAL

Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, written in 1729, might be the most gutting satire in history. UCLA students put together a very thorough explanation of the economic suffering and the proposed “solutions” that inspired Swift. References to A Modest Proposal form the skeleton of Hozier’s Eat Your Young. 

FIVE: SEAMUS HEANEY

Before learning about Seamus Heaney, you’ll need some background information on the Troubles. I recommend this National Geographic article. I also recommend looking through these Chris Steele Perkins photographs of life during the Troubles.

During the Troubles, Heaney wrote a series of poems about bog bodies. His poetry directly inspired the corpse imagery in Work Song, Like Real People Do, and In a Week. 

Disclaimer: I cannot read Hebrew or Latin. I am evaluating these translations solely by 1) how difficult they are to read and 2) how beautiful they sound. I cannot independently review them for accuracy. Just know that all the translations I’ve listed are widely respected among academics and/or religious leaders.

002: Pudding Recording Location: Report 2: After clearing the report Profile: Channel 42 Reporter. Born September 5. Blood type: AB. She has an excessive and intense rivalry with Ulala. Her competitive-fueled destructive behavior is unpredictable. This time, she’s trying to stop Ulala with her new guitar in tow. Da-nan! 003: Pine Recording Location: Report 3: After clearing the report Profile: Space Police Chief of the Eastern Galaxy District. Born June 5. Blood type: A. She is a beautiful woman that is accompanied by a theme song, written and composed herself, whenever she appear. She is dedicated to maintaining order across the galaxy. Hobbies include swimming, reading, and space horse riding. She has a younger twin sister named Texas. Her father, the Space Police Commissioner, inspired her to choose her profession. She's scary fast and can hit a drum 97 times per second if she gets serious about it. 005: Sexy 2 Recording Location: Report 3: After clearing the report Profile: A female space police officer that backs up Pine. Real name: Lily. Recently assigned to this district last month and this is her first full-on mission. She loves Pine like an older sister. It may not be apparent due to slender frame but her grip strength is out of this world; she can crush space bricks with just one hand. Note, Game Hints: You can also hit the drums with UP, LEFT, or RIGHT. And, if you go to OPTIONS, select KEY ASSIGNMENT, and assign DOWN to an open button, you can hit the drums with that button!

006: Shadow Recording Location: Report 1: After clearing the report Profile: The Ground Leader of the mysterious dance gang, the Rhythm Rogues. Leads bands of robots in raids across the universe, forcing innocent people to dance and capturing them in transport ships. His over-the-top actions and crimson scarf that flutters without any regard to gravity are big parts of his appeal. Note:

007: Shadow Imposter Recording Location: Report 5: After clearing the report Profile: A BuffBot utilizing a hologram to transform into Shadow in order to throw Ulala off. Contrary to its purpose, even the subtle differences are surprisingly easy to spot. When changed into this form, he can move quite happily with eight times the usual the speed. Note:

008: Space Michael Recording Location: Report 4: After clearing the report Profile: A Super Star that rocked the galaxy, a Super Dancer that transcended space and time. At everyone’s request, he’s now Space Channel 5 Station Chief, filling the once vacant seat (his predecessor stepped down after being involved in a scandal). He watches over Ulala and her crew. The tension is unchanged. Note, Secret Inputs: Information for a secret input in Report 5 (see 115).

009: Jaguar Recording Location: From the start Profile: Space Pirate Broadcasting Station reporter. He has a history of saving Ulala's life, even did so the other day. This time around, after sensing a new evil presence, this elusive truth seeker hurried out to conduct an investigatory infiltration mission. He hasn't been heard from since… Note, Item Received: Gives you the crimson rose item if you check his profile after clearing Report 5.

A boy genius who achieved success in field of electromagnetic robotics at a young age. Convinced by his own delusion, he believes that it’s his destiny to lead the "foolish and unhappy masses of the galaxy" to a world without worries (paradise) by forcing everyone to dance. He grew up surrounded by robots. Note:

011: Peace Recording Location: Report 2: After clearing the report Profile: Our one and only Space President. He works hard, day and night, to bring smiles and happiness to all of those in the galaxy. The Song Energy created by his singing is enough to bring tears to even those with the coldest of hearts. Note:

012: Noize Recording Location: From the start Profile: A real jack-of-all-trades, he can do anything from broadcasting music, repairing space broadcasting shuttles, to designing new types of mikes. He mainly gives Ulala technical support. Fuse recruited him from Channel 66 to be Channel 5’s Technical Development Chief without any regard to the other channel. He’s unusually modest and polite. Check his profile twice and he'll announce he's developing a new mic. If you check out profiles 022 and 018—in that order—then speak to Noize again, he'll give you the the Ear of Corn item. After receiving the Ear of Corn and clearing Report 3, he'll announce he's developing an ice cream cone shaped mic. If you check out profiles 050 and 046—in that order—then speak to Noize again, he'll give you the Ice Cream Cone item.

These are mass produced copies of the Perfect Reporter Robot, something the former Chief made in order to stop Ulala in her tracks. Thanks to the Michael Chip that Noize installed in them, they’re now reliable allies and dependable dance partners. They patrol the station. 014: Padding Recording Location: World 2, Report 2: After clearing the report Profile: A comedienne who recently added an impersonation of Pudding to her act. She’s 48 years old. She stars in singing and other such shows at the Space Health Center. She dominated Channel 5's 42nd Entertainment Awards. Her talents are vast, she can even do comedy skits in sign language. She has lots of fans. Note:

015: Texas Recording Location: World 2, Report 3: After clearing the report Profile: Pine's twin sister. She's the Space Police officer in charge of Western Galaxy Shopping District. Her motto is "You break the rules, and we'll break you!" She’s infamous for arbitrarily confiscating space bikes left in front of the station. She’s staunchly feared by locals. Note:

017: Space Guide Recording Location: Report 1: Space Symphony · Lounge C Profile: A sexy tour guide from Viscount Travel. When she gets a moment to herself, she can’t help but swing her sweet hips. If tourists aren’t sightseeing, they’re spending their time chatting with her. She collects pennants and key rings from all over the universe. “of course not,” he smiles, subtly pushing his notes to the side to make room for your own. you ignore l’s glance as you pull out one of your textbooks and its corresponding notebook.

silence falls over the task force headquarters once again aside from the occasional noise of a mouse clicking or your pencil scraping against the page.

light occasionally glances down at your work, silently double checking your answers. he waits for you to finish answering the hardest questions before he shifts slightly closer to you. he moves now using his left hand to continue researching the yotsuba group. you smile softly when he reaches over, subtly resting his hand beside yours. you silently reach over to take his hand into yours, intertwining your fingers together before you turn your attention back to your notes.

you pretend not to hear matsuda’s cheering or light’s father scolding him in favour of absentmindedly rubbing small shapes against light’s skin.

light softly smiles to himself as he quietly enters your shared bedroom before closing the door behind himself. your body lays sprawled out on the bed - one of your arms haphazardly thrown across one of his pillows, keeping it closely pressed against your bare chest. 

a small sliver of moonlight just barely illuminates the room as light tugs his own shirt off. he tosses his clothes into a laundry basket hidden away in your closet. he slips into an old pair of your sweatpants before carefully slipping underneath the covers to lay beside you. 

you stir awake at the feeling, lifting your head up just enough to squint at him in the darkness. “light?” you whisper. 

“go back to sleep, y/n,” he murmurs. you shuffle even closer to him, tangling your legs together underneath the blankets. your arm lays draped over his side as you lean in to nuzzle yourself against his body. he stifles a chuckle, pulling you even closer. goosebumps raise along your waist when his hand ghosts against your skin. he leans down to press a kiss against your forehead. “i love you,” you whisper. 

“i love you too,” light murmurs.

you stifle a small yawn as you tiredly walk back to the makeshift workstation you had set up at one of the free tables in the middle of the task force headquarters. the fluorescent lights beam down on you from above as you walk through the sea of empty desks until you find your computer. 

set delicately in the corner away from your computer is a small bouquet of flowers and a fresh cup of coffee with a small note taped to the mug. you smile softly at the sight as you approach, setting your bag down on the ground before you sit down in the chair. you push your computer aside, reaching over to grab the still-warm cup and opening the note.

l asked me and the other task force members to assist him on a mission. we’ll be back soon.

you smile as you pocket the note before you pull your phone out of your pocket to quickly send him a text before finally sitting down to start doing your work.

“i don’t understand why this is necessary,” l says, reaching out to eat another chocolate-covered strawberry. the chain of their handcuffs clink as light reaches over to grab a frying pan to continue making breakfast. “you’re not even going to eat the food.”

“it’s for y/n,” light says. his attention remains focused on the stove despite the complaints of the man chained to him. “he has a few classes this morning so i’m making his lunch.”

l remains silent, instead choosing to observe light. he occasionally tugs them around the grand kitchen as he expertly moves to cook your favourite meal. the chain drags against the marble countertops with each movement, though their complaints are left unsaid.

the handcuffs clink once again as light leans over the counter, quickly writing a love note on a piece of scrap paper. “i still don’t understand,” l comments.

light simply shrugs as he slips the note and container of food into your lunchbox before returning it to your backpack. l watches over his shoulder as he sets the bag down beside the couch. “i do it because i love him.”

“i’m fine,” you mumble, turning to look back down at your notes. “just… a little stressed.”

“you know you can tell me anything,” light frowns slightly as he reaches over to carefully grab your hand. “what’s wrong?”

you let out a small sigh as he begins to rub miscellaneous shapes against your hand. “i’m exhausted.” your voice shakes as each word leaves your mouth. “i have so much work - it all feels neverending. i don’t know what to do.”

“y/n,” light whispers. he reaches over to cup your face in his hands. “you’re incredibly smart, and handsome, and kind,” he brushes away a stray tear as it rolls down your cheek. “you don’t have to go through this alone. i’m here for you. i love you. let me take care of you.”

you nod, leaning further into light’s touch. “thank you.”

hey, i don't want to put you out or anything, i was just wondering if like off the top of your head if you knew any disability studies articles/books/whatever that center (or even just feature) tic/involuntary movement disorders?

so the answer to this was pretty much no but i spent a bit of time poking around and turned up this 2023 undergraduate honors thesis (link) by a student with tourette’s which seems like a solid starting point for going down the citation rabbit hole!

that piece is “The Embodied Performance of Tics and Tourette Syndrome in the Academic Environment” by Benjamin Allen; i’m only ~1/4th through rn but they argue for a continuum of ticcing + criticize the diagnostic system so i’m comfortable reccing it on that front! the (non-medical) tic-related works cited there are:

i also want to mention “Movements of the Uncontrollable Body Part Two” by Bronwyn Valentine (2019), a creative writing piece about her experiences of embodiment + ableism with spina bifida that i first read pretty soon after it was published & went looking for after developing my movement disorder a year ago because it was so impactful. @fndportal also has some incredibly vital work.

also if you haven’t already read Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s Staring: Why We Look, it’s not specifically about involuntary movements but definitely a core text for theorizing any visibilized disability.
