Mantle

Early 1870s

This mantle appears to have been made from a wool shawl woven with broad bands of boteh motifs, originally with a central medallion now cut in half at the base of each side to fall attractively over arms in wear, and quarter medallions at each corner that are now placed at each side of the centre front and back of the garment.

Shawls striped with pattern, sometimes known as zebra shawls, were an alternative to the ubiquitous style of broad borders to a plain ground or central motif. Particularly popular from the 1820s to the 1860s they were produced by European manufacturers as well as the original Indian avid Kashmiri centres.

Day Dress

The 1870s was a period of marked romanticism and whimsy in fashionable dress. Much like the picturesque paintings of Renoir that depict such confectionary creations, both day and evening gowns were highly ornamented and often executed in delicate, feminine textiles. Though eveningwear was marked by décolleté necklines and lavish silk satins and taffetas, day dresses were made more modest with austere fabrics like cotton or wool. While many women owned walking and traveling dresses which afforded slightly greater moveability, also quite common was the summer day dress that was to be worn to an afternoon tea or reception. This garment, emblematic of warm weather day dresses of the period with its sheer printed cotton and delicate lace trim, is a particularly pristine example, and notable for its clear revival of eighteenth–century aesthetic sensibilites. The late nineteenth century, abetted by the luxury and progress of the Industrial Age, recalled distinctly, both in its textiles and in the etiquette that surrounded fashionable dress, the notorious material excesses of the third quarter of the eighteenth century. The wealthy classes of the late–nineteenth–century showed a particular respect for the formalities of fashion. While their garments were not nearly as ornamental and their entertaining circles not as elitist, the decorative effects of late nineteenth century afternoon reception dresses such as this one unarguably echoed the lavishness of the eighteenth–century gown, most notably here in the sleeve and neckline.

Robe de dessous en satin blanc. Première jupe en tarlatane blanche, avec volant plissé ayant 25 centimètres de hauteur. Au-dessus de ce volant une bordure grecque en velours rouge, se terminant par des bouclettes de même velours. Seconde jupe pareille garnie de même (volant de moitié moins haut que le précédent), relevée de chaque côté. Corsage décolleté en velours rouge à petites basques et manches courtes. Collier en corail rouge. Dans les cheveux diadème en grenades.

Jupon de faye fris bleu, garni d'un volant froncé ayant 35 centimètres de hauteur. Au-dessus de ce volant, des pattes en velours de même couleur, fixées par un grand bouton d'argent. Au-dessus des pattes, une ruche en faye. Tunique garnie de même. Corsage montant à basques, et manches à volant avec même garniture. Sous-manches larges en dentelle.

White satin underdress. First skirt in white tarlatan, with pleated flounce 25 centimeters high. Above this flounce a Greek border in red velvet, ending in loops of the same velvet. Second similar skirt trimmed in the same way (ruffle half as high as the previous one), raised on each side. Low-cut red velvet bodice with small peplums and short sleeves. Red coral necklace. Pomegranate tiara in her hair.

Blue Faye Fris petticoat, trimmed with a gathered flounce 35 centimeters high. Above this ruffle, velvet tabs of the same color, attached by a large silver button. Above the legs, a faye ruffle. Tunic trimmed in the same way. High peplum bodice and ruffled sleeves with the same trim. Wide lace undersleeves.
