A fabulous custom made cabinet for displaying a fine 18th Century Porcelain service. In Europe at this time, hand painted porcelain from the Far East was highly prized and sought after as only Japan and China had the secret recipe for hard paste porcelain that was so resilient to temperature. The table ware sets were often made to order with the family coat of arms. The fascination for all things Japanese and Chinese has endured through the centuries and continues to this day.

🏛️Living again the best neoclassical dream in Sweden - 📌 The great hall of Gunnebo Slott. This space stands out for its stately elegance, and for the richness in its walls and sculptures. This ones were made by Giocchino Frulli in 1786 and in this case the over door is an allegory to farming; the boiseries had all the attention by the main architect, remembering us to some Parisian private Hôtels. 🎵 Piano Concerto No. 22 in E♭ major, K. 482, 3rd movement - W.A. Mozart (1785). - #palace #admagazine #architecture #neoclassic #rococo #palacio #museums #gustavian #louisxvi #18thcentury (en Gunnebo Slott och Trädgårdar) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpLWHd0oFSf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Virtuous Bankers: A Day in the Life of the Eighteenth-Century Bank of England
Nicknamed "The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street," the Bank of England is probably the most historically influential British financial organization. In Virtuous Bankers: A Day in the Life of the Eighteenth-Century Bank of England, Anne L. Murphy synthesizes a vast and impressive amount of primary sources, such as bills, ledgers, and minute books, to accurately and specifically depict the bank's operations. The core primary source of this book is an inspection of the bank, conducted in 1783 by three Bank of England directors, Samuel Bosanquet, Thomas Dea, and Benjamin Winthrop. By situating the Bank of England in the contexts of London and Britain at large, Murphy paints it a lively, much-needed, and three-dimensional portrait that uncovers the unknown corners of this well-known bank. Clarifying the legal and economic distinctions between the Bank of England and the British state, this book is highly recommended to university students of financial history or anyone looking for an analysis of primary sources on the Bank of England.

Cornelius Ind. his mark & seal
Mohawk. One of many signers of this document representing Mohawk homelands that spread across areas known today as eastern New York State, parts of western Vermont and parts of southern Ontario and Quebec
Cornelius is Identified within the text of this document as “Cornelius the Indian the youngest,” and appears alongside seven other Mohawk signers, who agreed to transfer land at the site of Fort Hunter west of so-called Albany, New York. Fort Hunter was constructed several years prior to the 1714 date of this deed, built by colonizers at the mouth of the Schoharie Creek, on the Mohawk River. Cornelius and others sign with pictographs and identify themselves as representatives of “we the three Races or Tribes of the Mohaugs Indians the Turtle, Wolf & B[ea]r.”
Signed in “Mohaughs Cuntry” May 14, 1716. Seen at Chapin Special Collections Library, Williams College.

Music in Colonial Massachusetts

Lambert, Barbara, editor. Music in Colonial Massachusetts 1630-1820. II: Music in Homes and Churches. A Conference Held by the Colonial Society of Massachusetts May 17 and 18, 1973. The Colonial Society of Massachusetts, 1980.
This is the most comprehensive roundup of what we know about music in the early colonies--what instruments people owned, what kinds of music they played, and how everyone felt about music generally (as well as dancing). I've been losing my shit trying to figure out which bowed string instruments besides the violin made it across the pond in the 18th century and in what context; it looks like viola da gambas of various sizes, as well as octave violins and the bass violin (the precursor to the cello), are attested to. In plucked strings, there's lutes and guitars but mostly citterns, an instrument that is a bit like a cross between a mandolin and a guitar. Sons of Liberty does violin-picking in place of using a mandolin (an instrument which is not well-attested to in North America until much later), but I'm not sure how much of a case can be made for picking a violin as opposed to using some kind of cittern. I've only just started reading bits of this; I'll have to come back and read the rest soon. (So glad this is online! I was worried I'd have to hunt down a rare print copy.)
