Sailors outfit! I have always liked these and was reacently inspired by I'm from the 1940s to finally make an outfit for myself. T-Shirt, skirt and jacket are all hand made and self drafted. The skirt is a 3/4 circle skirt, the t-shirt is made of 100% cotton and the jacket has a cotton lining. #sew #sewing #diyfashion #diywardrobe #historicalfashion #history #1940s #1940sfashion #sailor #sustainablefashion #patterndrafting https://www.instagram.com/p/CezHLzkjPcO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lucille Ball, bathing beauty, doing her part for the war effort. 'This backless, strapless bathing suit is something movie actress Lucille Ball worked out as her contribution to the clothing conservation program in the United States. She calls it a Looloo.' Just some additional context to this photograph...During WWII, The Office of Price Administration published a three-point “victory pledge” it asked housewives to abide by “in the total defense of democracy”: buy carefully, waste nothing, and take good care of everything. “Make and mend” was the byword. The clothing conservation campaign urged that new purchases be made with an eye toward not aggravating shortages. For example, Pacific Factag Fabrics took out a full-page ad in the December 6, 1943, issue of Life magazine, directing those with a loved one in the services to “help him do his job, by faithfully performing your duties here at home.” The copy strongly advised: “The way is simple: buy only what you need, buy it wisely and care for it properly.” #lucilleball #bathingsuit #bathingbeauty #wartime #wwii #conservation #1940sfashion #vintagestyle #oldhollywoodglamour #oldhollywood #backless #strapless #ilovelucy #lifemagazine #summertime #pledge https://www.instagram.com/p/CfHblOOO9ib/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

McCalls 8380: Sportswear as Picnic Wear
In the realm of occasions, sportswear has two versions. Actual active sportswear designed to allowed the body to move and stay comfortable, think ski pants, and sportswear that is less formal yet still playful. This one-shouldered dress falls into the latter category. There aren’t a lot of sports played better with one shoulder. Well, maybe archery?
Instead, this re-issued pattern from the 1940s was a form of social playwear. See how they drew it with flat sandals, to be made in gingham or other woven cotton fabrics, perfect for a day near the beach or for a picnic. Or it could be dressed up a bit for a summer party, see the high heels on the other drawing, to be made in silk shantung. The big bow on the shoulder does not seem to keep the dress on; it slides underneath the strap, and is then tied. A bow at the waist echoes it. Stripes will take more planning, while solid will be easier.
It dates from pre 1947 as the just below the knee hemline tells you. That hemline length got frozen in the early 1940s because of wartime fabric conservation regulations. Only after that did hemlines drop to lower calf with the encouragement of Christian Dior.
You can find this pattern at your local fabric store or online through the link above.
