You can’t keep a good dog down, Charlie Brown.
When NASA launched a mission to the moon last week, the unmanned cabin included a stuffed Snoopy in an orange flight suit.
The space beagle was among the small items that serve as “zero gravity indicators,” which visually signal that the capsule has reached “the weightlessness of microgravity.”
Turns out, the agency couldn’t have picked a better pop culture symbol:
For seven decades, Snoopy and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang have defied the forces of time, freed from the gravitational pull of trends.
The globally beloved cartoon characters still pop up daily in comic strips, books and gift shops, as well as in animated specials, both new ones and the classic holiday programs such as “A Charlie Brown Christmas” that now stream on Apple TV Plus.
“Peanuts” is in the ether as surely as the jazzy Vince Guaraldi Trio riffs that bounce along the airwaves once Christmastime is here.
This year, the headquarters of Team Peanuts in Santa Rosa, California, has another reason to hold gatherings at its museum and library and ceremonies at its ice rink:
It’s the centennial of the birth of “Peanuts” creator Charles M. “Sparky” Schulz, who was born 26 November 1922 and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Schulz died in February 2000, the same weekend that his final original strip was published.
Yet what he launched into the zeitgeist in 1950 remains a cultural touchstone. On Saturday, many syndicated cartoonists will mark the centennial in their strips.
So why does “Peanuts” endure so strongly — remaining so firmly woven into the fabric of popular culture — when so many aspects of mass entertainment all but disappear?
Jeannie Schulz, widow of the cartoonist and president of the Charles M. Schulz Museum’s board of directors, puts it concisely:
“Sparky tapped into a universal humanity and translated it into simple lines with a subtle humor.”
Those elegant, poignant, slyly simple lines curled and curved their way into religion and sports and war and mental health and love unrequited.
To mark the centennial, The Washington Post asked celebrities from various areas of achievement what Schulz’s creation has meant to them.
‘As good as anything ever’
Producer Lee Mendelson approached Schulz in the mid-’60s with an idea: Coca-Cola was interested in a TV project.
Out of that seed grew one of the two greatest animated Christmas shows to emerge from that decade: a classic that, like “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” melded the genius of artistic minds.
Schulz teamed with animator Bill Melendez and, working under a deadline of mere months, the three men created “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” a masterpiece that daringly led with its heart.
Charlie Brown battled seasonal depression, Snoopy engaged in flights of fancy and Linus Van Pelt delivered the biblical monologue that, out of the mouths of a babe, still moves viewers regardless of age or faith.
“Over the course of my life, I’ve probably watched ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ more times than any single episode of television,” late-night host Jimmy Kimmel says. “It’s one of the main reasons I decided to have more kids.”
Kimmel thinks that special reflects the larger excellence of what a boy from Minnesota ultimately gave to the world.
“As soon as our daughter Jane learned to read, I bought her all the ‘Peanuts’ anthologies,” the comedian says. “I bought an original drawing of Snoopy by Charles Schulz that may very well be a forgery. I cherish it even if it is.
“The best of Peanuts is as good as anything ever. For me, it’s one of the greatest achievements in American art and literature.”
Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, director of such films as “Inside Out” and “Up,” says that brilliance was firmly rooted in the comic strip, which launched in fewer than a dozen newspapers before eventually being syndicated to thousands, becoming one of the most widely read strips in the world.
“Schulz was brave enough to talk about human, adult, often non-funny things in his strip,” Docter says. “He featured kids dealing with anxiety, insecurity, jealousy, unrequited love, which gave ‘Peanuts’ a real weight and importance.”
Growing up in Minnesota himself, Docter was drawn into a world that stays with him today.
“As a kid, I was totally hooked by Snoopy and the escapist fun and humor of that character,” he says.
“But whether Schulz was conscious of it or not, it was those deeper emotional things that made me continue to read into adulthood. Those deceptively simply drawn characters have real complexity and depth."
“And besides, they’re still funny 70 years later. How many comic strips can claim that?”
Bay Area author Gene Luen Yang considers how Schulz’s comic evolved from revelation to quiet revolution.
Says Yang, author of such graphic novels as “American Born Chinese”:
“He is so influential that pretty much every strip-format comic today, whether in the newspaper or on the web, has borrowed a bit of that innovation.”
‘We stayed close’
Ever the athlete, Schulz embraced baseball, golf and hockey from a young age. He grew to love sports like tennis and these passions regularly found their way into his strip.
Before he befriended some professional athletes well into his career, though, Schulz could not have known how much he buoyed them.
“As a young skater growing up, it was always fun to see the comic strip and celebrate everything we experienced at the rink,” says figure skater Scott Hamilton, who won Olympic gold in 1984.
“To see the ‘Peanuts’ [characters] come alive on the ice made it seem like what we were doing was more than just skating. We had a place in popular culture.”
Schulz relocated to Northern California in the late ’50s, but you couldn’t take the Minnesota boyhood out of the man.
In Santa Rosa, he built the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, also known as Snoopy’s Home Ice, in 1969. And there, in the early ’80s, Hamilton began working with Schulz on ice shows.
(The skater will host “Sparky’s Ice Spectacular” at the venue on Saturday to mark the centennial.)
“Sparky was very hands-on in everything he did,” Hamilton says.
“In one of the productions I did for him, he had this dream of doing a cocktail party where I got to play the host of the party.
That character was interested in a girl at the party, but she gets swept off her feet by another guest, kind of like his stories of the Little Red-Haired Girl in the comic strip. Just when it seems he lost the girl, she comes back after all the other guests had left.”
Adds Hamilton, “To see how much Sparky loved that production made it one of my all-time favorite skating memories.”
Schulz also became a strong supporter of equality in sports, which included joining the board of trustees of the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded in 1974 by tennis icon and civil rights activist Billie Jean King, to “advance the lives of women and girls through sports and physical activity.”
Schulz would not only draw Snoopy serving aces. He would also reference his friend King.
“Sparky was actually very shy, and his comic strips were a great source of inspiration and comfort for me, especially as I traveled the world during my tennis career,” King says.
“I knew if he added my name to a ‘Peanuts’ strip, he was checking in on me and wanted to have a chat.
“We stayed close until he passed, and I will always cherish that.”
’A perfect pairing’
Mendelson, who died in 2019, believed in creative serendipity. He once told The Post that the first time he heard the music of Vince Guaraldi — while driving across the Golden Gate Bridge — he thought he might use it someday.
Singer-songwriter Ben Folds views Guaraldi’s music as inseparable from the classic “Peanuts” animation it accompanied.
“When you match the music with ‘Peanuts’ and the era and what it was doing and saying, then it starts to hit like Beethoven Piano Sonata time,” Folds says of Guaraldi’s sunny West Coast sound that “distilled jazz into something popular.”
Guaraldi’s “Peanuts” songs and the animated specials were “a perfect pairing,” he says, adding that the music “just gets the vibe.”
That “loomed large” when Folds was asked to write theme music for the recent streaming Peanuts special, “It’s the Small Things, Charlie Brown.”
He meditated on Guaraldi’s music rather than trying to imitate it: “I didn’t try to drop riffs. I just went with the color.”
‘Pursue their dream’
This month, “Jump Start” creator Robb Armstrong appeared on a Schulz Museum panel with other celebrated cartoonists to share personal stories about the Sparky they knew.
As he sat onstage, Armstrong appreciated that Schulz “made other budding artists either realize their dream, pursue their dream or smooth the road on their journey.”
“He was one of the most grand-hearted human beings I’ve ever encountered,” Armstrong says.
A 6-year-old Armstrong was inspired by “Peanuts” in the summer of 1968, when Schulz integrated the strip by introducing a Black character: Franklin.
Armstrong’s reaction: “I’m in this strip.”
(About a quarter-century later, Schulz gave Franklin the last name of “Armstrong” in a salute to his friend and syndicated colleague, an honor the “Jump Start” creator calls “otherworldly.”)
Barbara Brandon-Croft, the trailblazing creator of the comic “Where I’m Coming From,” also responded strongly in 1968.
“I was excited to see a Black character in ‘Peanuts.’ Even if Franklin’s presence was only that — a Black kid amongst the group — it absolutely made a difference,” she says."
“When you grow up as an ‘other,’ which is what this country laid out for us, when you see yourself represented, it gives you a sense of belonging.”
‘The cool astronaut’
Schulz, a World War II Army veteran, was long fascinated with aviation.
NASA and “Peanuts” have a long relationship that includes the Silver Snoopy Award, which is bestowed upon outstanding NASA contractors and employees.
In 1969, Schulz appeared in public alongside the Apollo 10 astronauts who rode in the module called “Charlie Brown.”
That was also the year that a future astronaut was inspired by Snoopy and space.
“In 1969, the Mets won the World Series, [astronauts] landed on the moon and I went to see ‘A Boy Named Charlie Brown,’ the new animated feature, at Radio City Music Hall, says Mike Massimino, an engineering professor and space adviser.
“It all happened within a few months of each other, and it kind of set up the passions for the rest of my life.”
That year, Massimino received a stuffed Snoopy astronaut toy as a gift.
In 2009, on his second NASA space mission, Massimino took that same Snoopy toy into space, a symbol of his lasting attachment to “Peanuts.”
Noting that his attempts to become an astronaut failed three times before he was accepted, Massimino says he admires Charlie Brown’s spirit of optimistic resilience.
“Charlie Brown is the friend and person I wanted to be, and Snoopy is the cool astronaut I wanted to be,” Massimino says.
Adds the astronaut, “I think it’s the greatest comic strip and characters ever created.”

Apple TV+ debuts Oprah, Jennifer Aniston series for streaming service
CLOSE
Apple announced its own TV and movie streaming service, enlisting superstars to try to overcome its rivals’ head start. (March 25)
AP
It’s almost time to take a bite out of Apple’s new streaming service.
The company is launching Apple TV+ on Nov. 1 with nine original programs for $4.99 a month. The new programming includes dramas, comedies and movies with big-name stars and producers such as Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Momoa. (Several of them attended a major kickoff event in March to showcase the new service.)
But can Apple TV+ replicate the success seen by other services including Netflix, Amazon and even Hulu? Take a look at what will be offered to its streaming customers on its first day and beyond, and judge for yourself.
Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon star in the new Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show.” (Photo: Apple)
‘The Morning Show’ (Nov. 1)
First, this isn’t a morning show: It’s “The Morning Show,” a drama about a “Today”-like show. The series stars Aniston as an over-the-hill news anchor, Reese Witherspoon as an upstart and Steve Carell and a #MeToo’d anchor (think Matt Lauer). Apple has already picked up a second 10-episode season.
‘Oprah’s Book Club’ (Nov. 1)
Apple announced a multi-year partnership with the talk show legend and founder of the OWN cable network. The deal includes the series “Oprah’s Book Club,” a feature made popular on Winfrey’s talk show after it was first launched in 1996. For the first Apple TV+ episode, Winfrey interviews author Ta-Nehisi Coates about his new book “The Water Dancer.”
‘See’ (Nov. 1)
Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”) and Alfre Woodard (“Luke Cage”) star in this dystopian drama set 600 years in the future. The series follows the struggle and survival of the human race after a virus kills a large number of humans and leaves the survivors blind.
‘Dickinson’ (Nov. 1)
Hailee Steinfeld (“Bumblebee”) plays “Dickinson” – yes, it’s a comedy – about the early life of poet Emily Dickinson, with Jane Krakowski (“30 Rock”) as the poet’s mother.
‘For All Mankind’ (Nov. 1)
The new space series explores how different our world would be if the space race had never ended. The show is being created by Ronald D. Moore (“Outlander,” “Battlestar Galactica”) and stars Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) and Sarah Jones (“Alcatraz”).
‘Helpsters’ (Nov. 1)
The team behind “Sesame Street” takes on this series about lovable monsters who help solve problems.
‘Snoopy in Space’ (Nov. 1)
Get the gang together and bring the dog, too! The beloved characters from “Peanuts,” created by Charles M. Schulz, will make Apple their home for series, specials and shorts based on “Peanuts” characters. The agreement includes STEM content in partnership with NASA. First up: “Snoopy in Space,” about a dog who wants to become an astronaut.
‘Ghostwriter’ (Nov. 1)
A mysterious ghost in a bookstore enlists the help of four kids to release fictional characters from literature. The show is a reboot of a 1990s PBS series.
‘The Elephant Queen’ (Nov. 1)
Apple TV+ will also take on nonfiction fare, including this documentary that follows a mother elephant and her herd.
‘Servant’ (Nov. 28)
A tragedy creates a rift in the marriage of a Philadelphia couple, which opens a portal for a mysterious force in this series from thriller creator M. Night Shyamalan.
‘Truth Be Told’ (Dec. 6)
Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) star in this series, which examines true crime podcasts and the consequences of America’s obsession with this new form of media.
‘The Banker’ (January)
Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, who both recently starred in “Avengers: Endgame,” play entrepreneurs trying to provide housing loans to African Americans in 1950s Texas. The project also stars Nia Long (“NCIS: Los Angeles”) and Nicholas Hoult (“Tolkien”). The movie will premiere in theaters on Dec. 6 before it appears on Apple TV+.
‘Little America’
This new anthology series captures the stories of immigrants in the United States. Based on a collection of stories in Epic Magazine, the show will be executive produced by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the husband-and-wife team behind “The Big Sick.”
‘Hala’
A high school senior struggles to balance her life as a teenager with her traditional Muslim upbringing. The movie was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
The following Apple TV+ projects are among those expected to appear in 2020 and beyond.
Chris Evans project
Evans has been tapped to executive produce and star in “Defending Jacob,” a drama based on the book by William Landay. Evans, best known as Captain America in the Marvel movie franchise, plays a man whose 14-year-old son is the prime suspect in a murder.
Brie Larson series
Larson, who triumphed at the box office with “Captain Marvel,” will try her hand at producing and starring in an Apple TV+ series. The untitled project is based on the book “Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA,” by former CIA undercover operative Amaryllis Fox.
Bill Murray movie
Director Sofia Coppola is reuniting with her “Lost in Translation” star Murray in “On the Rock,” a film about a larger-than-life figure who reconnects with his daughter during an adventure in New York City. Rashida Jones (“Parks and Recreation”) is also set to star.
‘Time Bandits’
The new comedy series, about a young boy picked up by a group of time travelers, is based on the 1981 movie from “Monty Python” alum Terry Gilliam. “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi has been added to the project to direct and co-write the pilot. He’ll also be a producer on the series.
J.J. Abrams and Jennifer Garner will be reunited for a new Apple TV+ series. (Photo: Christopher Polk, Getty Images)
‘My Glory Was I Had Such Friends’
Jennifer Garner and director J.J. Abrams, who teamed up on ABC’s “Alias” more than a decade ago, are reuniting for this limited drama series about a group of women supporting a friend waiting for a heart transplant. The show is based on the memoir by Amy Silverstein.
‘Sunny’ Day
Fans of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” will be happy to see Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day working on the new Apple+ series “Mythic Quest” as writers and producers. McElhenney also stars in the workplace series about a video game studio alongside F. Murray Abraham (“Amadeus”) and Danny Pudi (“Community”).
Kevin Durant’s ‘Swagger’
The Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant’s life in youth basketball is the basis for the drama “Swagger,” which explores the lives of players, families and coaches in an amateur basketball league. The NBA star is an executive producer along with Brian Grazer (“Friday Night Lights”).
Spielberg’s ‘Amazing Stories’ returns
Executive producer Steven Spielberg is rebooting his NBC anthology series “Amazing Stories.” The 1985-87 sci-fi/fantasy series’ cast includes Edward Burns (“Saving Private Ryan”) and Kerry Bishe (“Halt and Catch Fire”) .
Animated ‘Park’
“Central Park,” about a family of caretakers in the famed New York City park, includes the voice talents of Josh Gad (“Frozen”), Kristen Bell (“Frozen,” “The Good Place”), Leslie Odom Jr. and Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton”) and Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”).

If you're a fan of good ol charlie brown and the gang, this volume which starts at the very beginning, is a must have....
I just love looking at the very first Peanuts comics. People don't seem to know that the original comic strips looked pretty different from how we've come to know charlie brown and the gang. Mr Schulz was just starting out with this gang and they definitely evolved over the years. You can certainly tell who everyone is, but there are noticeable differences. Snoopy looks very different.Years ago when I was in high school I wrote a report on the philosophy of peanuts. At the time I thought cutting up my peanuts books to illustrate my report (I believe I got an "A" by the way. perhaps that's just a skewed self serving memory) was a good idea. Now, years later I have lots of books with many pages missing or cut up. These compilation volumes are fantastic. If you are a peanuts fan, you can't go wrong.BOTTOM LINE: Charlie Brown and the gang were not always quite a wise in these first two years, but they're still spectacular. To have all these early comic strips reproduced so faithfully in this volume is just fantastic Go to Amazon

Amazing content, high quality volume
Although far from its final form (there are many characters who won't stick around, familiar characters are much younger, and Snoopy is still very doglike), this is a great read and the art and storytelling that would make Schulz famous are already in evidence. In addition to the first two years of the comic, there is some interesting supplemental material -- a biographical essay and an interview with Schulz, both of which help shed light on him and his amazing career.Eventually this series will probably end up taking up a lot of room on my bookshelf. In addition to being a great read, this volume is very handsome. Go to Amazon

Magnificent
My grandmother is (still) a great collector of all things Snoopy. Back in the 70's, when I used to visit my grandmother's house, I remember spending a lot of time reading some of those early collections of Peanuts cartoon strips. They are one of the many great memories of my youth. Now, we have a collection of the very first Peanuts strips. Magnificent! How many of us still remember the beginning? So many things would grow and change. Violet and Patty (not Peppermint Patty) were Charlie Brown's "girlfriends" whom he could torment as much as he was tormented by them. Violet was actually the first to pull the football away from Charlie Brown. Snoopy was still a dog with no words. Schroeder is very prominent as a child prodigy with his love of piano and growing love of Beethoven. Charlie Brown is the catcher for the baseball team. Lucy & Linus make there first appearances. And so much more. Still, we can see this wonderful world taking shape and we can see how it will become to be this most beloved of comics. This volume also contains a nice introduction by Garrison Keillor and concludes with an interesting interview of Charles Schultz, enlightening us to some of his own feelings about his strip and what has become of the world of comics. As the first of a projected twenty-five volumes collecting all the Peanuts strips to be released every six months for the next twelve years, all I can say is I can't wait for volume 2. Endorsed by My 8-Year Old Son
My 8 year old son loved this book. It's the third one in the series that he's read, and he's asking me to buy him another one. I wondered if he would like 1950's Charlie Brown after reading a 1970's collection where all the characters are drawn differently, but it didn't seem to bother him at all. I highly recommend this book! Go to Amazon

Li'l Folks
Before Charlie Brown developed into the lovable loser, and before Snoopy and Woodstock took over the strip, this collection of the first two years is an excellent compilation of PEANUTS. It is hard to imagine, but in these early strips, Charlie Brown is more of a DENNIS THE MENACE and girls are actually fighting over his affection (i.e. Violet, Patty, and Lucy). Snoopy is actually a "pet dog" and inventive in the early years and, as support player, is more likeable and refreshing than his modern day persona which pervades the main focus of the strip in the later years. Sifting through the multitude of these daily panels, we do see the early glimpses of what is to come (i.e. Lucy, Charlie Brown, and the infamous football),Charlie Brown's famous shirt, Shroeder becoming a "concert pianist" with references to Beethoven, etc. This is a must have for all PEANUTS lovers with strips that haven't been reprinted or seen since their debut fifty years ago. Charles M. Schulz' simple but effective line drawing shows off a little more dimension in the early art work with some compicated "sets" and "backgrounds" with added perspective in some of the panels. Finally, the most important thing is Schulz' writing. The dialogue and situations he puts upon his characters is what makes PEANUTS a cut above the rest especially in the early years of Charlie Brown and cast. Go to Amazon

Great Series
one of the best things in life is looking back on things you loved as a kid and find out that you love them just as much if not more as an adult. This collection is complete (two years of strips per book) and with added insights from a guest columnist (such as billy jean king) that gives us a glimpse of why this beloved strip is still so strong today. It's universal, it's honest and it's real, not overly political or too philosophical but you'll undoubtedly see bits of yourself within these comics. I highly recommend everyone buy this series, and make sure to get the two book sets (as opposed to separately) as you get free shipping and they come in a hard cover slipcase that will help ensure that this can be passed down through the generations.

Charlie Brown Lucy Snoopy Linus Marcie and the rest 1971-1974
Peanuts has always been my favorite comic strip. Charles Schultz always came up with good stories like when Snoopys doghouse burned down Charlie Brown bought mittens for a girlfriend as a Christmas present only to find out shed just bought some herself Charlie Brown getting a chain letter-leave it to him to get one- among many others. Those stories are in different books but the ones that are in this one are just as good. My two favorites are the one where Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty go to camp and Charlie Brown gets a roommate that wont say anything to him except shut up and leave me alone meanwhile Peppermint Patty is luckier as her roommate is Marcie who she meets for the first time and the one where Lucy signs up to skate in a Christmas skating pagaent but Snoopy is the only one willing to skate with her. After practicing in the wee hours of the morning for several nights Snoopy gets cold feet when the big day arrives. He sends Woodstock to skate in his place and leaves Lucy yelling Im not gonna skate with a bird.I wont spoil anymore stories either but theyre just as good. You should get it.

It's Peanuts, what else is there to say!
This was a gift for my oldest adult son. He loves all things Peanuts (as do I). I haven't seen it yet, but hope to. Peanuts, succinct observations on life.

I have been searching for this set for a while and I'm happy that I found it and looking forward to giving this to my Husband for Christmas. I can't wait to see his expression. I know he will be a happy camper since he loves peanuts books.

Li'l Folks, dontcha love them?
I have bought and totally loved every single available box set in these Complete Peanuts series. So why pick this one for a review? Well, you've got to take a stand sometime. Can I add that I've got a special soft spot for Peppermint Patty -- the hippie kid? -- who seems to be on every page of volume 12? Charles M. Schultz began his Peanuts (can you believe he hated the "Peanuts" name to his dying day? It was imposed by the syndicate) strips back in 1950 and never missed a beat up until his death in 2000. We're talking 17,897 daily and Sunday strips here. And Fantagraphics will offer all of them. 50 years of Peanuts, 4 years of Peanuts per yearly boxed set. We're barely halfway through with this boxed set. This humble review comes as a tribute to the undying genius of Schultz. The man is a saint or something. I believe everybody on Earth has at least once in his life seen at least an image of Snoopy. On a T-shirt, a sticker or something. I bet every reader of this poor review knows his Peanuts through and through. If not, buy all the boxed sets already released in this series. In 1974, Schultz really was in full swing, his pencils literally took off while his mind was somewhere else. Peanuts are one of the milestones by which the second half of the 20th century will be remembered. Do not miss them. A big shout to Fantagraphics. Can't wait for the Complete Peanuts boxed set 1975-1978! (which will be available in October 2010)

We love Peanuts!
These volumes are rapidly becoming my most prized posession. You have to understand, I AM Charlie Brown. I can link every one of these little personalities with people in my family. Every time I pick one of these books up I am transported to this nameless little town. Aren't we all a little like Charlie Brown? He tries, and tries, and tries, and usually fails; but we love him anyway! Its great to be able to see the strip that ran on special dates in your life, like the day you were born, etc. Charles Schultz was truly a genius. He was able at the same time to present a melancholy almost sorrowful work that was uplifting and always entertaining. These sets are a triumph that I eagerly await every year!

The Complete Peanuts from 1971 -1974
First, I love the peanuts. Second, I love this wonderful collection! I especially love the fact that I can see which strip was published on different important dates in my life. The Peanuts also gives a little insight as to world events and opinions at that time without getting too controversial. Well done!
