I’m so torn on what to do cause I currently really want to move out of my parents house since I’m starting online college this fall and I’ve already learned it’s impossible to get anything done at home since my dad works from home and is very very loud 24/7 and I have enough saved up that it is possible as long as I continue having a job that pays at least $15/hr (not super hard for me) BUT the area I currently live in (and the surrounding areas that are still near my work) has ridiculously high rent prices and while I’m not exactly attached to the area and have looked into places near my aunt’s (an area I’m obsessed with) which are so much cheaper BUT I would have to quit my job which I genuinely love doing and I love the clients who I see on a regular basis and while I could easily get another similar job it’s gonna be a whole different group of animals and idk if I’d like it as much

#i also would feel so bad quitting because I genuinely love my managers and the owner and when I was hired I told them Id be there for a whil #and it hasn’t even been a full year #and I’ve looked in literally every area that I would be able to move to AND continue working my current job #and my god are they expensive #like maybe not to some but $2000 a month for a 1bed 1bath 450 square ft apartment? #fucking expensive #especially when the area I love it’s like $900 a month for the same thing #which also means I can get an even bigger place and actually decorate all cute cause I won’t be dying broke on the floor #rent #moving #job #work #general complaining #life #real life

#i like my shed but i would prefer just. having a family home that was actually big enough to be a family home. #(the shed tldr is i moved out then had to move back in but into a shed because there is negative space in the main house) #the original house was actually only a 2bed but it had an extension done to give it a 3rd bedroom and an indoor toilet #great for retired couples not great for families with kids #for a while we were up to 8 people living across the main house a 1bed 1bath granny flat and me in the shed #i am very much only living here because i cant afford to rent solo and the rental market is so many levels of fucked these days anyways

You could still rent 1bed 1bath apartments in my city for 500 dollars in 2019. Now they are 1100. 1100$ apartments are now 1600 at the lowest.

My syringes for my meds were 20¢, now they are a dollar.

We’re spending about the same on groceries because we are learning cheaper places and cheaper ways to shop, but if we were buying what we were then, it’d be more than 2x as much.

And I look around. Some peoples wages have gone up, a bit. But a lot of folks have stayed the same, and a lot of folks have gone down. There’s less “good jobs” anymore.

A lot inspired by the new quest area on Ord Mantell in Star Wars: The Old Republic! Features a cantina and a droid repair shop on the first level, plus six rental units. Four are 1bed/1bath, one is 2bed/1bath, and one is 1bed/1bath with an office. Two have balconies. All are fully furnished. I tried to give each unit its own personality while remaining reasonably within the Star Wars aesthetic, but feel free to redecorate at will!

I could not place ceiling tiles on the rounded corners of the units :(

Could not get my sim to interact with the hot pot in #220 and I couldn't figure out why. It just kept disappearing from the action bar. This is an issue since it's the only unit without a stove. If you also run into this problem, go ahead and edit to your heart's content

Also ran into issues testing the stoves in a couple of the unitsd where my sim kept acting like there was no available counter to do meal prep on, even though there very much was. Sometimes my sim would continue if prompted, but do the meal prep over the sink. (???) I couldn't figure out how to fix this, either. Again, edit your way out if encountered!

Hey, Tumblr! Let's do some math!

My current apartment, 1bed 1bath, 765 sqft (about 71 sqm) costs $1,337/month. That's just rent, no other expenses.

Okay, so all the financial guidelines say your pay should be 3x your rent per month.

So my apartment is $1337/month. So three times that: 1337 x 3 = 4011

4011 / 4 = 1003 (rounded)

1003 / 40 = 25

So I need to be paid $25 an hour to meet that advice.

Twenty-five dollars. An. Hour.

How much per hour are a lot of jobs around here? $12-$15 an hour--and that's way above minimum wage here ($7.25). It's still $10/hr less than I'd need to make that 1/3rd-of-the-rent rule.

And this is not accounting for any other expenses (like food, electricity, water, the misc. expenses landlords like to tack on, insurance, car expenses, &c).

just to have something to upload on here, here is a 2br, 1bath 100% cc-free(!) 20x20 house i built based on this 1908 Sears catalog:

I have obviously taken some liberties, for instance replacing the ground floor bedroom with a dining room, the pantry for a sunroom with an easel, and moved the attic to the roof level to make room for a study and nursery. but the basic shape and floor plan is the same.

I tried to go for a Craftsman-esque interior just because I have been looking at California bungalows recently, and Craftsman style was definitely popular in 1908. I both love and hate the sheer simplicity and woodiness of Craftsman houses, they feel very masculine to me, and of the irl houses I've seen they are pretty dark even with some natural light streaming in. speaking of which, the window placements are crazy in this house, i always start placing furniture and rooms before i remember windows exist.

there IS an apartment building literally like right next door to my job that i could probably make rent on a 1bed/1bath if i split rent but living in a 1b/1b with anyone other than my husband would be pretty awkward and he is not working atm and even if he was he’d have to get a new job anyway if he moved so we’d be in a very perilous situation regardless
