1K Dragons Challenge Reflection
Now that I've completed the challenge, I will write down my thoughts! And if I don't cover something you're curious about, feel free to send an ask. :)
The Facts:
Goal: Draw 1000 dragons before the year ends
Start date: January 1, 2021
End date: September 20, 2021
Time elapsed: 263 days
Things I liked about this challenge:
The engagement! I have received lots of support and encouragement. Lots of you were rooting for me to achieve my goal, and it made me happy to know you were there.
Related to the above, I enjoyed when certain dragons were pointed out. "X looks cute" "I like the pose for Y" "oooo Z is pretty" Hearing your thoughts and impressions felt good. It meant that the individual dragons were being perceived rather than just a batch of drawings with numbers attached.
Keeping things interesting. I tried to play with shapes and colors and anatomy throughout the challenge. I used different media too!
Things I didn't like:
Having to keep track of my sketches. Sometimes I'd sketch a few dragons on a spare notecard, and then I'd have to keep it around until I could take a pic and add it to the batch.
Counting my sketches. I had to do it for record keeping purposes (how else would I know when I got to 1k, after all?), but gah! I learned early on that I didn't like doing it.
This challenge pushed many other of my goals and projects from my mind. I fell behind on other things I had wanted to do for the year because all I could think about was getting this challenge done.
Other Things:
Do you feel like you got faster at drawing dragons? Not really. But I could draw pretty quickly already, so that wasn't a goal for me.
Do you feel like you got better at drawing dragons? Yes! Maybe not to any drastic degree because I've been drawing dragons for years already, but I feel certain that I've improved in variety, shapes, details, poses, expressions, and probably some other smaller things.
What materials did you use? A variety! I used a drawing tablet and CSP for the digital stuff. For traditional stuff, I used pencils, pens, watercolor paints, acrylic paints, and markers. As well as aluminum foil for the sculptures!
What counts as a dragon? I tried to keep the definition pretty loose from the start. In addition to the traditional dragons like western style dragons, eastern style dragons, wyverns, drakes, wyrms, amphipteres, sea serpents, and lindwyrms, I also allowed for chimeric dragons which under a stricter definition wouldn't count. I also included all dragon-type pokemon, even if they look nothing like dragons. Sometimes I feel like I strayed into "creature" territory where things weren't very draconic at all, so some of the designs didn't make it into the count because despite how blurry the line was, I felt like they didn't land on the dragon side.
Do you plan on doing another challenge like this? Nope! Not challenges of the "draw [big number] of things" variety, anyway. I still plan to do things like inktober and stuff. Maybe not this year, though...
What will you do now? Rest. I powered through the final hundred or so in about a week, and I think my body and brain deserve some time off. But after that, I'll review my other art projects and apply my focus and energy to one or more of those. (said projects include but are not limited to: Fire & Darkness, PMD Harmony, Foolmaster, a couple art tutorials that I've vaguely said I'd do, anatomy studies, watercolor biome series, any of the many WIPs I have....... yeah, plenty of projects)
Thank you all for the support! While I could have done it without the support, it made this project much more enjoyable knowing that others were rooting for me and enjoying what I created.
