- “What are you making, curly?”

Sanji’s intense concentration is broken at the sound of Zoro’s voice. He stood in the entrance as his eyes were zoned in on Sanji’s hand mixing some rice. Even though he wasn’t really doing anything that required watching the stove, Sanji still shot a glare over at Zoro. It still didn’t deter Zoro from sitting at the table to watch him.

“I didn’t even hear you,mosshead, get a bell or something,” Sanji grumbled as he finished up the rice. He brought the plate of onigiri to put in front of Zoro at the table. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched him lick his lips before taking his first bite.

“Not my fault that you can’t fucking hear,” Zoro said with a mouth full of food and Sanji sneered at the sight while putting the rice into a bowl for Zoro to eat. It was around this time that Sanji would start his snacks for the crew and he saved Zoro’s for last. Not necessarily regarding any favoritism, but it was just the order for the day. Tomorrow he could be first for all Sanji knew.

Sanji put the plate of rice in front of him and walked over to clean up where he cooked. A comfortable silence wrapped around the room as Sanji listened to the sound of Zoro eating his food. Zoro made a deep but loud coughing sound and Sanji shot his head over to him hitting his own chest with a clenched fist.

“You good?” Sanji asked him, his eyebrows furrowed as he watched Zoro keep his fist clenched like he was hiding something in his hand. The cough sounded almost guttural, like something was being pushed out of his throat.

“Yeah, just ate too fast,” Zoro answered, having the look of someone who didn’t just eat too fast. His lips wobbled into a wince that Sanji knew he was trying to hide. Even with his obvious lie, Sanji smiled small at the mosshead speak for a compliment.

That bastard must be getting sick or something, Sanji thought to himself as he watched the swordsman bring that once clenched fist back up to keep eating. So he was imagining it, he didn’t have anything in his fist. With a shrug, he put the last of his dishes in the sink.

“I’ll uh. Help you. With the dishes when I’m done,” Zoro said to him, making Sanji raise an eyebrow at the request. He wondered if Nami put him up to this nice act to lower his debt. Whatever the case may be, he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

“Sure,mosshead. You seem a lot more...docile, recently,” Sanji pointed out as he moved to sit across from him. Zoro nodded, no mosshead speak retort for Sanji to hear. He’s not gonna talk with his mouth full after all, Sanji realized with a smirk.

The two sat in silence during the time that Zoro ate his onigiri. He stared down at the rice and looked back up at Sanji. There was no real look of malice but curiosity instead and he grabbed a handful of rice and took a bite. Zoro hummed in approval as he kept eating.

“You had biryani rice before, mosshead?” Sanji asked him and realized he forgot to get him a spoon. Zoro grabbed his wrist with his free hand to stop him and Sanji jolted at the unexpected touch.

”Yeah, and you don’t need to get a spoon,” Zoro told him and let go of his wrist for Sanji to sit back down. “When I was 16, I ran into some guys that were eating this big thing of food.”

“I was low on money, I had no good bounties on my rader, and they offered me some food. How could I pass that up?” Zoro explained as he took another bite of the rice. Sanji nodded mindlessly, wondering what compelled him to share this bit of information. It’s not like he really knew a lot about the shitty swordsman before now, besides what Luffy has told before.

“That was very kind of them, did they also give the plant life on your head water too?”

“That one sucked, shitty cook.”

“You suck.”

“Stupid curly-“

Zoro’s insult was cut off into a harsh cough and he leaned his head away from Sanji. Sanji frowned over at him as he watched him take a deep breath. Pain spread across his face as he tightened his lips. So that stupid marimo is sick, Sanji thought to himself with a scowl.

“As much I appreciate our little banter, mosshead, you need to go see Chopper. I don’t want your germs all over my kitchen,” Sanji said to him and he got up then stared at his dishes. Completely finished, as he expected.

“What about the dishes?”

“They’ll be fine, mosshead. The same thing can’t be said about your lungs though,” Sanji teased him, trying to make the worry that was clouding him. Zoro rolled his eye and he stood up so that he was face to face with the cook. It was strange to be this close to the mosshead when they weren’t fighting.

But it let him see how…pretty Zoro was. Sanji let him think it in the comfort of his own mind, not daring to express that outloud. It wasn’t that different from him thinking that Robin or Nami were pretty. Just him providing a compliment in his head.

“Thanks, twirly brow,” Zoro said and patted his shoulder before walking out of the galley. He stopped to let out another guttural cough before walking quickly in the direction to wherever Chopper could be. In his speediness, Sanji saw something drop and he walked over to what felt to the ground.

Sanji bent down to stare at a flower that the mosshead dropped. A blue primrose, his favorite flower. He didn’t remember them landing on an island that had these kinds of flowers. Grabbing the flower, he winced at the feeling of slobber on his fingers and he tilted it to stare at the center.

“Blood,” Sanji murmured to himself and from where he was bent down, his head leaned over to find the same kind of flower on the other side of where Zoro was sitting. He coughed this up…

What the hell happened to Zoro?

Read my first fanfic in Japanese!! I had a sudden idea of looking for HP fanfics in Japanese on ao3 & found a Wolfstar fanfic titled 将来の予定 by SagaByakuya. It followed a short and simple conversation between Sirius Black & Remus Lupin, written in simple Japanese. I loved how the dialogue was written and how easily the conversation flowed between the characters. I felt the grammar could be improved, but the author mentioned they had been studying Japanese for less than a year and so I was deeply impressed! In fact, it inspired me to write my own fanfic in Japanese, which I definitely wish to do someday :D

Read another Tadoku graded reader titled 「ふしぎだな―ぼくが感じた不思議なこと」 where the narrator shares aspects of Japanese culture that they have found both fascinating and strange (the word 「不思議」 carries both meanings as far as the English translations are concerned, and I figured the same from the context of the story - would love to learn more about this word though; it feels kind of similar to 面白い in terms of the nuances it suggests across the meaning spectrum). It was a fun read!

Listened to the first 12 minutes of the podcast episode No 65 Girls Talk by Miku Sensei! Loved the conversation so far! I couldn't finish it as I was feeling very sleepy after a long day🫠

Today was the testing ground for some of the new routines I want to establish this year - I have decided it is better to bring them in a handful at a time as not to end up feeling too overwhelmed and chicken out immediately.

It has been a good day: I found the new habits I introduced today quite manageable and enjoyable. But at the same time it has also been somewhat wearisome because of my constant overthinking and worrying about what’s to come.

The fact is, I am afraid that, when I will have finally laid out all the new habits I want to integrate in my life, there won’t be any more time for life in itself. That I will end up giving more time, space and attention to only one aspect, thus leaving out the rest.

My plan is to be able to make all aspect of my life cooperate: my career (which is still a simple job search for now), my health (physical and mental), my social life (which is close to non-existent at the moment) and my passions (which I have neglected in the past years blaming it on the pursuit of my studies, and that I feel I am neglecting even now, only this time I am blaming it on having to focus my energies on planning of this glow up project).

The problem is, I spend more time planning things and worrying about the uncertainty of the future than doing the actual thing I am supposed to do to get things going.

This fear for what’s to come - fear for the failure that may occur - often leads to overthinking. In the past, this bad habit has stopped me many times from achieving or even pursuing my objectives.

Because of this, of my 2023 goals is to quit worrying too much for what’s to come and to start thinking, and enjoying, more the present season of my life and the gifts it brings me every day, every moment even.  

That’s why I decided to practice gratitude every day, so to focus my attention on the good parts and let go of the bad ones. And that’s why I am pairing today’s photo with this motivational quote I found on Pinterest.

2/365*2023 - Salam Perpisahan

Aku pernah merasakan begitu bahagia hanya dengan duduk berbincang bersamamu. Bercengkerama mengeluarkan isi otak masing-masing. Seperti hari itu, setelah semua yang terjadi di antara kita, kau kembali menyapaku. Padahal aku sudah membulatkan tekad untuk menyerah pada keadaan yang pernah tidak memihakku. Aku sudah berusaha untuk merelakanmu bersamanya.

Namun hari itu semua dinding yang telah kubangun runtuh seketika, saat kau dengan santainya mendatangi meja kerjaku. Berjam-jam kita bertukar kabar yang terlewat. Tanpa sadar semua harapanku kembali tumbuh. Kian percaya bahwa ada sedikit kisah yang bisa ku perjuangkan. Bodohnya aku, berharap kau telah usai dengannya.

"Tolong, jangan buatku berharap dan menunggu, jika yang kau berikan hanya asa yang semu."

Lalu semesta menamparku dengan kenyataan yang aku sendiri sebetulnya sudah paham. Hanya saja aku sering kali menyangkal karena sikapnya yang kembali "nice" kepadaku.

Namun hari ini aku mengerti, dia mendekat padaku bukan untuk kembali menyusun cerita tentang kita, melainkan memberi salam perpisahan karena dia akan membersamainya mengarungi kehidupan selanjutnya.
