I really liked this scene of Aloy and Beta in Horizon Forbidden West, which is around the halfway to two-thirds mark in main quest progression.

Today, as you read this [...], there are almost 2 million people locked away in one of the more than 5,000 prisons or jails that dot the American landscape. While they are behind bars, these incarcerated people can be found standing in line at their prison’s commissary waiting to buy some extra food or cleaning supplies that are often marked up to prices higher than what one would pay outside of those prison walls. [...] If they want to call a friend or family member, they need to pay for that as well. And almost everyone who works at a job while incarcerated, often for less than a dollar an hour, will find that the prison has taken a portion of their salary to pay for their cost of incarceration. [...] These policymakers and government officials also know that this captive population has no choice but to foot the bill [...] and that if they can’t be made to pay, their families can. In fact, a 2015 report led by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Forward Together, and Research Action Design found that in 63 percent of cases, family members on the outside were primarily responsible for court-related costs [...].
Rutgers sociology professor Brittany Friedman has written extensively on what is called “pay-to-stay” fees in American correctional institutions. In her 2020 article titled, “Unveiling the Necrocapitalist Dimensions of the Shadow Carceral State: On Pay-to-Stay to Recoup the Cost of Incarceration,” Friedman divides these fees into two categories: (1) room and board and (2) service-specific costs. Fees for room and board -- yes, literally for a thin mattress or even a plastic “boat” bed in a hallway, a toilet that may not flush, and scant, awful tasting food -- are typically charged at a “per diem rate for the length of incarceration.” It is not uncommon for these fees to reach $20 to $80 a day for the entire period of incarceration. The second category, what Friedman refers to as “service-specific costs,” includes fees for basic charges such as copays or other costs for seeing a doctor or nurse, programming fees, email and telephone calls, and commissary items.
In 2014, the Brennan Center for Justice documented that at least 43 states authorize charging incarcerated people for the cost of their own imprisonment, and at least 35 states authorize charging them for some medical expenses. More recent research from the Prison Policy Institute found that 40 states and the federal prison system charge incarcerated people medical copays.
It’s also critical to understand how little incarcerated people are paid for their labor in addition to the significant cut of their paltry hourly wages that corrections agencies take from their earnings. Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of incarcerated people work behind bars. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, those who work regular jobs in prisons such as maintaining the grounds, working in the kitchen, and painting the walls of the facilities earn on average between $0.14 and $0.63 an hour. [...] Arkansas and Texas don’t pay incarcerated workers at all, while Alabama only pays incarcerated workers employed by the state’s correctional industry. [...]
For example, if someone sends an incarcerated person in Florida $20 online, they will end up paying $24.95. [...]
Dallas County charges incarcerated people a $10 medical care fee for each medical request they submit. In Texas prisons, those behind bars pay $13.55 per medical visit, despite the fact that Texas doesn’t pay incarcerated workers anything. Texas is one of a handful of states that doesn’t pay incarcerated people for their labor.
In Kentucky’s McCracken County Jail in Paducah, it costs $0.40 a minute for a video call; this translates into $8.00 for each 20-minute video call. [...] For those who need to use email, JPay charges $2.35 for five emails for people in the Texas prison system ($0.47 an email). [...]
People in Florida prisons pay $1.70 for a packet of four extra-strength Tylenol and $4.02 for four tampons. And with inflation, commissary items are priced higher than ever. For example, according to the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, incarcerated people in Kentucky experienced a 7.2 percent rise in already-high commissary prices in July 2022. Researchers noted that a 4.6-ounce tube of Crest toothpaste, which costs $1.38 at the local Walmart, is $3.77 at the prison commissary. [...]
In Gaston County, North Carolina, incarcerated individuals who participate in state work release may make more than the state’s $0.38 an hour maximum pay, but they pay the jail a daily rate based on their yearly income of at least $18 per day and up to $36 per day. In fact, Brennan Center research indicates that almost every state takes a portion of the salary that incarcerated workers earn to compensate the corrections agency [...].
These room and board fees are found throughout the nation’s jails and prisons. Michigan laws allow any county to seek reimbursement for expenses incurred in relation to a charge for which a person was sentenced to county jail time -- up to $60 a day. Winnebago County, Wisconsin, charges $26 a day to those staying in its county jail.

Degenbrecher vs Ch'en vs Irene S3
Alright because I'm curious and I haven't seen anybody do it yet, i'll make a comparison between the three Swordmasters' very similar S3s.
Please note that this calculation will not take modules into consideration (even if Ch'en should almost definitely have her first module level 3'd), as Ch'en already has 2 while Irene and DB have 1.
I will also be calculating raw physical DPS instead of practical (by that I mean against a target with DEF) because I have work and also I'm lazy. Ch'en's S3 has a much higher DPH per slash than either Irene or DB which matters when it comes to calculating physical damage, but Irene and DB have 50% and 25% DEF ignore talents respectively which means the damage of all 3 is really going to vary depending on the enemy attacked as well as Irene's talent RNG.
Ch'en
ATK at E2L90 Trust 100 = 660
Talent 2 gives +5% ATK so 660 + (660x.05) = 693.
S3 [30 SP cost, Attack Recovery ] = Seeks the closest enemy around and launches 10 slashes in a row, each dealing 320% ATK as Physical damage and Stun the target on the last hit for 4 seconds.
Damage on one enemy is 693 x 3.2 = 2217.6 per hit. For 10 slashes on the same enemy, that's 22,176 physical damage.
____
Irene
ATK at E2L90 Trust 100 = 701
Talent 1 has a 50% chance to ignore 50% DEF, chance increases to 100% against Aerial units.
S3 [24 SP cost, Attack Recovery] = Deal 300% ATK as Physical damage to all nearby ground enemies, and cause them to Levitate for4 seconds, then bombard 12 times, each hit dealing 250% ATK as Physical damage to all enemies in a small area around a random target.
Damage of first hit = 701 x 3 = 2103 damage. Damage of 12 attacks = 701 x 2.5 = 1752.5 per hit. 1752.5 x 12 = 21,030 damage. Adding it to the initial hit gives us 2103 + 21,030 = 23,133 physical damage.
____
Degenbrecher
ATK at E2L90 Trust 100 = 685
Talent 1- When attacking, 10% chance to increase ATK to 160% and inflict [Disarm] to targets for a 5 seconds
2- When attacking a Disarmed enemy, Ignore 25% Def
Disarm = Enemies cannot use normal attacks when blocked.
(Both are used in her S3)
S3 [30 SP cost, Auto Recovery] = Launch 10 slashes consecutively, dealing 235% Physical Damage to 6 enemies per slash. Talent 1 activation chance increased to 100%, and slashes will pull enemies in with a certain force. Then, she will do one final large slash with an increased pull force and 330% Physical Damage.
Since Talent 1 has 100% activation during S3, we first boost DB's ATK stat with it.
DB's ATK = 685 x 1.6 = 1096 ATK.
Damage of 10 slashes = 1096 x 2.35 x 10 = 25,756, or 2575.6 per hit
Damage of final slash = 1096 x 3.3 = 3616.8. Adding this to the damage of 10 slashes gives us 25,756 + 3616.8 = 29,372.8 Physical damage
____
Overall
Ch'en S3 = 22,176 physical damage.
Irene S3 = 23,133 physical damage.
Degenbrecher S3 = 29,372.8 Physical damage
Degenbrecher has a clear advantage over the other two in terms of raw damage output.
Some notes to keep in mind
As someone that can only slash 1 target at a time, Ch'en's S3 is at the biggest disadvantage, being the lowest overall damage, no multitarget capability, and no DEF ignore.
However, Ch'en remains the only operator able to give +1 SP every 4 (3 with module) seconds to all ATK/DEF recovery skills, giving her utility not seen in the other two Swordmasters
Irene's S3 is a weird one, dealing a true AOE attack to random targets inside her range. This means that while her attacks can get diluted by multiple enemies like Ch'en's can, an enemy within her range not being targeted can still get hit by the AOE targeting another enemy if both enemies are close enough. if a crowd is densely packed, Irene can hit all of them with all 12 of her attacks on top of the first levitation hit, which is a true AOE attack that hits all enemies in range at once.
Degenbrecher's S3 is not a true AOE attack, but is limited to 6 targets. Rare to have more than 6 enemies in range at once, but notable for niche scenarios.
Irene's S3 has a 50% chance to proc 50% DEF ignore, while Degenbrecher's will always ignore 25% DEF on a disarmed enemy. This means that even when levitated enemies fall, Irene can still RNG a DEF-ignoring hit, while Degenbrecher's DEF ignore should normally be 100% reliable with S3, but will stop working entirely if the enemy is immune to status effects.
Should also be noted that all 3 have different Crowd Control effects. Ch'en's stuns, Irene's levitates, and Degenbrecher's disarms, a new status effect. Take note of which enemies are vulnerable to which.
Note again that this calculation does not take modules into effect.

Hi Mike! I created an account just to ask you questions. I’m a huge fan, and I’m a dollar baby filmmaker, I got to adapt King’s story Cain Rose Up. So many questions I’d love to ask you about the adaptation process because from what I’ve learned it’s a tough one. But I’ll just ask this.
Have you seen any dollar baby films? And what do you think of the dollar baby program itself?
I have another question… I noticed after Gerald’s Game your work started to have a different look to it. Cinematography wise. Your work previously was always in 2.35:1 with black bars on top and bottom. Haunting of Hill House all the way to The Midnight Club has been full frame. Was this something Michael Fimognari did or was this your input?
Best of luck with your movie! I'm very familiar with the Dollar Baby program, it's a great thing, and I hope you have a great time. As far as aspect ratio, this isn't quite correct. Michael and I make that decision together project to project for any number of reasons. Oculus, Before I Wake and Hush were 2:35:1 to take advantage of the theatrical experience, but Ouija: Origin of Evil was shot anamorphic and then cropped to 1:85. This was a decision unique to that movie because we wanted to emulate the horror films of our youth. We wanted anamorphic optical quality, but a more contained aspect ratio. We had experienced a lot of horror movies on VHS when we grew up, and a lot of those were shot scope and then crammed onto VHS through a hideous process called "Pan & Scan". It created this strange dissonance where we'd see anamorphic optics in a frame that filled our television sets, so we did a variation on that. Ouija: OOE is probably the only project I'd ever consider handling that way, and it was really fun to do.
Gerald's Game is back to 2:35 again because we preferred the look when we considered Jessie's blocking in the movie (sitting up with her arms fully outstretched). It helped her fill the frame while feeling the claustrophobia of the movie. Hill House was not full frame - in fact, it was 2:00:1 and still had subtle letterboxing. We wanted to go scope but Netflix had an internal policy that wouldn't allow original programming to have an aspect ratio wider than 2:00:1, because they were scared of subscribers watching it on their devices and kicking back on any black bars (this was a very stupid decision on the behalf of Netflix, and they've since backtracked on this). That locked us in to 2:00:1 for Hill House, Bly and Midnight Mass, but that was all about Netflix's policies. I would have shot Midnight Mass scope if they'd allowed us to. With Doctor Sleep, we opted to shoot 1:85 because that's what The Shining was, and strange as it sounds, we wanted them to work together as a double feature. Midnight Club actually employs a lot of different aspect ratios. By this time, Netflix had done away with their dumb aspect ratio rule, and we were free. So we opted to shoot 1:85 for the "A Story" of Midnight Club, so the world felt more ordinary and real, and so younger viewers would have their devices' screens filled. But for the "B stories" that the club members tell each other, we use a ton of different ratios. 2:35, 2:00, even 4:3. For The Fall of the House of Usher, we went back to 2:35. It has a very gothic theatrical feeling throughout. So there you have it - every project is different and we have a thoughtful conversation about what the right aspect ratio will be. There's really no overarching rule at all, now that Netflix's policy has changed. FWIW, Hill House wanted very much to be 2:35. They were wrong to jam us on that.

FAQ:
"But how can you be a Christian and leftist?" Because Jesus is!
"The Bible isn't about politics. Why are you bringing your own personal agenda to the text?" We all always bring our own biases to the text. The question is simply whether we acknowledge them or not. Most interpretations of the Bible you'll hear twist the Bible to support the status quo. We read the Bible, usually pretty straightforwardly, and realize that that interpretation isn't congruent with the book written by an oppressed people about their liberatory God.
"I don't really know the Bible all that well. What can I contribute?" Your perspective! We read the Bible from a leftist and liberationist perspective, and a big part of the liberationist perspective is that everyone has something to add to our understanding of the Bible. We offer many, often contradictory, readings of a story in each episode. Your job as a co-host isn't to know the Bible in and out, but to do as much reading and/or research as you need to feel comfortable sharing your thoughts with a broader audience.
If you're interested, it doesn't hurt to just post a take! Worst case scenario, you can tell me you're not interested later on. More likely, you'll have a great time recording with us and I'll be DMing you again to get you into new episodes!

i feel like the tipping culture in my country might be different than in yours so i have a question (in good faith, i hope it comes across this way): why does tipping seem to be “reserved” only for waiters? why isn’t tipping for example cashiers a thing?
yeah im not super in the know on why tippong originated but heres my perspective as someone whos worked counter service cashier jobs and food retail and as a server
tipping is not reserved for waiters it's for people in the food industry, including cashiers, baristas, delivery drivers, etc (& support staff at restaurants get tipped out too) as well as for people giving services like hair dressers, masseuses, tattoo artists, taxi drivers, etc. like many people (stupid) wont tip cashiers and many places (fast food) wont let you tip their cashiers (they do get paid regular minimum wage though, while server minimum wage is 2.35 but it's weird to me to not allow tips). I always tip on to go orders bc the workers are doing the same amount; my restaurant doesnt have to go orders really but my old one did and tips on to go went straight to the support staff. but basically, its just how it is. why not tip retail? thats just not how it is. I dont know. Sorry. I havent really worked retail (i worked food retail and didnt get tips, but people would sneak me cash since i was doing some barista stuff) but it's kind of just that you are less in control of a customer's experience, generally. Like if you get your bra size measured, would you tip the person who did it? Idk. I'll have to check this out when i get my size measured soon. Idk, i try to tip as much as possible lol. Cashier, barista, etc. i buy something for $5 leave a $5 tip because it feels bad to leave just a dollar or two... theres also a retail store that allows tips at checkout and idk what it really goes to but i tip every time, i guess i could ask. and there's other services you tip for like hairdressers or masseuses or tattoo artists or taxi drivers like i mentioned before. at least thats just how i and others do it. because these people spend time, even several hours with you helping you and are probably not paid enough is my guess. (definitely taxi drivers are not paid enough especially if its uber/lyft...) Do you tip car repair? I need to get my car repaired, I'll look into it...
For why servers are prioritized in conversation: The bottom line is that it has been ingrained into american culture down to LAW that servers get paid less because they get tips. love it or hate it, by not giving tips you are not showing you disagree with a system, you are just fucking over a worker. You still spent the money at my restaurant, it will stay open. Many servers are also against passing laws to invoke minimum wages to lessen tipping because they would be paid way less, and i cant blame them. Like, my restaurant cant afford to pay me $60/hr. I got paid $60/hr tonight. I felt like i was going to die, but i would feel the same way if i was getting paid minimum wage by my employer, and i would be getting 1/4 that amount. Like serving simply isnt really worth it as a job because of the toll it takes on your mind and body to deal with customers, stand on your feet all day, carry heavy plates, clean the restaurant, etc, if we are not getting lots of money. At least for me since im disabled and killing myself with this job lol. But i have no college education and i LOVE feeding people good food! (I've also worked counter service not fast food, complicated , we did a lot of takeout, i mostly cashiered, never got a ton of tips, it was definitely much easier than being a full server in a full service restaurant. you should still tip people there thoughh)
