Sustainable Development Goals
Bringing change to communities is the one and main goal we work upon in the community context. Although change can not be seen over night, and it requires people to work together and ensure that no resources are wasted while working on transitioning the community. According to WHO the 17 sustainable development goals are a call for action worldwide, in both developing and developed countries, to advance prosperity while preserving the environment or planet, to end poverty and inequality, and ensure that all people enjoy health and justice and that no one is left behind.

SDGs are a collection of 17 interwoven goals that were introduced in 2015 by the United Nations, to replace MDGs which started a global effort in 2000 to tackle the indignity of poverty. These goals were created to ensure that by the year of 2030, the world will be a better place and more sustainable for everyone.
In the community that I am placed in, I am determined to work towards 5 SDGs, which includes no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education and gender equality.
Ending poverty in all forms is the first goal that I intend to work on. Covid-19 has not only stopped working towards this goal, but it shifted the focus to almost one goal which is good health and well-being as people health and well-being were threatened by the pandemic. (Fenner, 2021) The pandemic has shown weaknesses in the global system, showing how the predominance of poverty, insufficient health systems, lack of education, and lack of international cooperation has exacerbated the situation. Most people lost their jobs due lockdown as companies were closing in the worse times of the Covid-19 pandemic, (Shulla, 2021) this increased poverties in many households, mind you schools were closed, and some learners depend on school feeding.

We as OTs working in the community, we should focus and work on upskilling people and help them find jobs, so they can be able to provide themselves with necessities for survival. Subsistence farming can be another way to tackle poverty, as they can grow crops to feed their families. However, commercial farming can be another option for people who wants to grow crops to sell in order to make money and provide for their families, which also creates entrepreneurial opportunities.
Hunger is another cause of crimes in community. Cato crest community is a highly populated area with a lot of crime occurrences. In the past few weeks, the Mayville Secondary school was held at gun point, where the robbers took the school teaching and learning resources, and teachers personal resources. It is highly possible that most of these resources were sold to get money. (Abraham, 2020) Stated that, if we promote sustainable agriculture with modern technologies and fair distribution systems, we can sustain the whole world’s population and make sure that nobody will ever suffer from hunger again. Farming can ensure that there’s Zero hunger in homes and can provide nutritious and sufficient food for families. OTs can train people in the community to do handwork, so they can sell the products to other people in order to get money.

Ward counsellors must initiate community Zero hunger Program, (de Mattos, 2017) where people can donate food for poor people and begin feeding schemes for poor people in the communities, to ensure that no one sleeps on an empty stomach. Sharing is caring. Food parcels can be given to poor people, to ensure Zero hunger.
Primary health care is a whole-society approach to health and aims to attain the highest possible level and distribution of health and well-being by providing an accessible and wide range of services, including health promotion, disease prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, and palliative care. (Chotchoungchatchai, 2020) The SDG 3, aims to provide access to good-quality health services for all, without financial hardship. In densely populated areas like Cato crest, diseases spread easily, which results to many people getting sick, and this community depends on one clinic, (Cato manor) which delays the access and quality health services, due to many people in queues waiting for services. I am determined to work towards good health and well-being.
As OTs we do health promotion, disease prevention, and provide interventions in the community clinics, to improve the health status of individuals and communities and advocate for health.

Quality education is the key to prosperity and opens a world of opportunities, making it possible for each of us to contribute to a progressive, healthy society. (Nazar, 2018) This is one of the goal’s that can end poverty, ensure zero hunger as well as good health and well-being.
Occupational therapists ensures that all children have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education, as we attend day cares and pre-schools to ensure that early stimulation and age-related developmental milestones are met.
We also work with primary and high school children from the community, that were identified to be struggling in class. Some of these learners are highly affected by the home context. Occupational therapists provide holistic intervention to a person, to ensure equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes. In this way quality education can be maintained and improved.
Last but not least, gender equality, this is another goal that I intend to work on. This goal focuses on eliminating discrimination against women and girls, unfair treatment, violence, as well as elimination of forced marriages to women. As OTs we want women to be recognised and valued. Women do a lot of work, including house chores, caring for children and others, attending school meetings, regardless of their health and well-being. OTs need to advocate for women’s rights, fair treatment and equality in workplaces, political decision making, promotion of gender equality as well as the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels. (Kim, 2017)
Achieving the SDGs in communities without leaving anyone behind requires the community and the community stakeholders to work together with the local government in ensuring that all these goals are met or achieved. No matter how proficient we get at resolving environmental issues, we must also address the social issues that put sustainability in jeopardy if we are to build a truly sustainable economy. Inequality and poverty top the list of such issues.
