The story on the savannah, and how the savannah trees evolved and survive. The story also makes it clear that savannah trees rely on fires, but any thought that we can fix our wildfire problems with savannah trees and forests are quickly dismissed. The savannah trees required eons to adapt to what they are today, not decades.

Excerpt from this story from BBC - Earth:

With the exception of wildlife film makers, arboriculturalists and a few scientists, most of us don't spend much time in the leafy upper reaches of tree canopies. But in the underground forests beneath the savannahs of southern Africa and South America, it's an experience open to all.

With most of their branches safely underground and just their leaves and perhaps some twigs poking up above the surface, these subterranean versions of their above ground ancestors are close to indestructible. Some can live for more than 10,000 years.

Recent research into when and why these underground trees first evolved is starting to shed light on how the savannahs in which they live came into being.

Savannahs are ecosystems in which trees are widely spaced enough for plenty of light to penetrate, allowing grasses to dominate at ground level. They cover around 20% of the vegetated surface of the Earth.

While they may look relatively impoverished, during the wet season they can produce more vegetation than forests and a large proportion of this is digestible by animals. Savannahs house the last of the great mammal communities: the elephants, rhinoceros and big cats that have been driven to extinction elsewhere.

Prehistoric humans often made their home on them, and in the past researchers even suggested their spread played a key role in humans evolving to walk on two legs. Today they are home to approximately a billion people.

While scientists are in broad agreement about the importance of savannahs, it is when questions about their origins arise that the arguments begin.

②旧坂本小学校

かつて自分が通った小学校も昭和4年築の復興小学校だったので、共通点が多く感慨深かった。どの校舎も似た様なものかもしれないが、正門を潜ったすぐ先に玄関ホール（昇降口）があり、そこから左右に廊下が伸びて一方は教室、もう一方は講堂（体育館）に繋がっている。そして玄関を通り抜ければコの字型の校舎に囲まれた狭い校庭があるのだ。建物は鉄筋コンクリート造だが、内壁には腰板が貼られている。 1階の教室は階段を数段上がったところから始まっているのでバリアフリーの観点とは相容れない仕様。階段の手摺りは人研ぎ（人造石研ぎ出し仕上げ）だ。

坂本小学校には講堂の壇上奥に奉謁所（戦前、天皇の御真影を掲げていた場所）の跡が残っていた。今回は映像のみの公開だったが、玄関ホールに地下室があって戦時中は防空壕として使われた様子。それで思い出したのが、我が校にも床下収納の様な入口を持つ地下室（防空壕）があり、御多分に洩れずそれにまつわる怪談があった事。夜中に血塗れの日本兵が出没するという話で、よくよく考えてみれば内地の防空壕に日本兵がいた確率は低いと思うのだが、小学生の僕らは真剣に恐れたものだ。当時流行っていた口裂け女もまた然り。

そんな訳で以前見学した復興小学校「常盤小学校」の写真も併せて公開。こちらの学校にも同じ様な入口を持つ地下室（防空壕）があって、中に入らせてもらったのだった。

Task #2: Let’s Get Real

The following excerpts are good examples of the content and tone that I plan to include in my magazine. I want to touch on all aspects of the musicians’ lives and music, introducing the audience to what they create, as well as a behind the scenes look at their lives and what inspires them.

I want to have a nice balance between seriousness and humour and to feature interesting and compelling facts and examples of content.

On Andrew McMahon and Leukemia:

“McMahon is no stranger to leaps of faith. After winning over Warped Tour crowds over the course of two Something Corporate albums, the frontman from Southern California forged ahead solo, and in the process expanded his pop palate, as Jack's Mannequin. Then, in 2005, came his unexpected diagnosis of acute lymphatic leukemia at 22, which naturally unsettled McMahon's entire world. After three more albums as Jack's, McMahon retired the name in 2012, in part as an effort to leave behind years of emotional baggage.”

“The new album attempts to capture McMahon, a father and husband. At this point, the key, he said, is to write material that both engages audiences and feels true to the singer's current place in life, which is easier said than done.”

It’s no easy thing to create a credible, original other world. “Adventure Time,” which McHale helped develop, has managed it by the steady accretion of detail, a tendency to show rather than explain and a dedication to the principle of “weird thought, best thought.” Its Land of Ooo seems less invented than discovered.”

Anadarko Announces LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement with JERA And CPC Corporation, Taiwan

HOUSTON, May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: APC) today announced Mozambique LNG1 Company Pte. Ltd., the jointly owned sales entity of the Mozambique Area 1 co-venturers, has signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with JERA Co., Inc. (JERA) and CPC Corporation, Taiwan (CPC). The SPA calls for the delivered ex-ship supply of 1.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) for a base term of 17 years from the commercial start date. Mozambique LNG’s portfolio of long-term sales now includes four of the top five LNG importing markets in the world.

“This co-purchasing agreement with JERA and CPC brings together two prominent Asian foundation customers and will ensure a reliable supply of cleaner energy to meet the growing demands of both Japan and Taiwan,” said Mitch Ingram, Anadarko Executive Vice President, International, Deepwater & Exploration. “We are excited to take the next step with the expected announcement of a Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Mozambique LNG project on June 18, as we remain on track to complete the project financing process and secure final approvals. This new SPA brings our total long-term agreements to 11.1 MTPA, and we are extremely pleased and grateful to JERA and CPC for selecting Mozambique LNG to be part of their long-term energy portfolio.”

Anadarko is developing Mozambique’s first onshore LNG facility consisting of two initial LNG trains with a total nameplate capacity of 12.88 MTPA to support the development of the Golfinho/Atum field located entirely within Offshore Area 1.
