Charles Leclerc : « I have no problem with pressure » — an article by Lionel Froissard for L’Équipe, 25/10/2018
The softness of his features, his youthful silhouette and his tender looks are misleading. In an F1, this boy is formidable. Recruited by Ferrari for 2019, Charles Leclerc will change life, not style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A promising novice in Formula 1, Charles Leclerc has, as could be suspected, switched to another dimension. At the wheel of a Sauber-Alfa Romeo (powered by the same Ferrari engine as that of the Scuderia cars), he never stopped inviting himself in the middle of the pack, scoring points literally and figuratively. Thus, what Ferrari decision-makers had not dared with Jules Bianchi (deadly injured at the Japanese Grand Prix in 2014), — who was the first member of the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2009 as well as Charles' friend and mentor, — they did with the Monegasque driver by announcing that he would be Sebastian Vettel's teammate from 2019 in the great Scuderia.
Then, when it became official, a week after the Italian Grand Prix, Charles first called his mother to tell her the news before tweeting a message to pay tribute to his deceased father and his friend Jules, who also passed away. Because the young Niçois Jules Bianchi, eight years his senior, is the one who first believed in Charles Leclerc when he saw him evolve on the karting track that his father was then managing in Brignoles, in the Var. When the Leclerc family ran out of money (because yes, not all Monegasques extremely wealthy), Bianchi asked his agent Nicolas Todt if he could do something to help his friend. Todt junior is not a philanthropist: he did not promise anything but inquired about Leclerc and began to help him so that he could progress in feeder series. Such a talent could not escape his destiny. Brilliant from his F3 debut, Nicolas Todt and the managers of the Ferrari Driver Academy were very quickly convinced that they held a "special talent" with Charles Leclerc.
In December 2015, the Monegasque was integrated into this prestigious sector. He enjoyed then a somewhat special status since Ferrari participated in the financing of his future GP3 and F2 seasons while guaranteeing him to participate in F1 test sessions at Haas, Sauber and for the prestigious Italian team. This time, Ferrari did not hesitate and enlisted the little prodigy. It had been nearly sixty years since the Scuderia had last bet on such youth (with the 19 year-old Ricardo Rodriguez, in 1961).
Three days after the Monaco Grand Prix, we had an appointment with the young driver on the Monaco heliport, at the end of the Fontvieille district, on the other side of the famous rock surmounted by the princely palace. After the madness of the F1 weekend and the hundreds of movements of the large metal dragonflies, the platforms placed on the sea had regained their calm. Few helicopter flights were carried out to transport hurried businessmen and merry Russian couples. But on that morning, Monaco looked like any city at rush hour. In addition to the dismantling work of the circuit which had started 48 hours ago, the incessant extension and modernization projects of the principality add to the chaos of traffic. Even an F1 driver, even a Monegasque who knows every alley and shortcut by heart, cannot escape this mechanical magma that glides in slow motion in the sloping streets of his small city. Polite, Charles Leclerc warns that he would be a little late
The team, who came to dress and photograph Leclerc for a shooting co-produced by Sport & Style and the eyewear brand Carrera, one of the sponsors of the Swiss team, worries about the gray that persisted and the rain that threatened. Upon his arrival, the young man immediately relaxed the atmosphere by being available and relaxed. If many athletes solicited by their equipment manufacturers or sponsors are reluctant for this kind of exercise, Charles announces with a big smile: « I'm already at my seventh photo shoot. I like it. I love clothes and discovering clothes that I wouldn't necessarily think I would wear. I really like beautiful shoes too. » It's a chance because Charles Leclerc surely had more than one reasons to be upset or look displeased. His first home Grand Prix ended in a huge crash at more than 250 km/hour, due to the rupture of a brake disc. « I tried to avoid the car in front of me, but there was no room. The main thing is that the team understood what caused the problem. We had a misjudgment with a set up. It's the race, » calmly tells an analytical and philosophical Charles Leclerc.
As for a displeased look: it would be justified by the round trip made the day before between Monaco and Maranello, where the Scuderia Ferrari headquarters is located. Driver of the Ferrari Driver Academy since the end of 2015, Charles has his towel ring there as well as a bucket seat to accommodate his height (1.80 m) and perform tests in the simulator — a cockpit equipped with all the controls of an F1 single-seater, all mounted on cylinders facing a screen wall with a radio connection with engineers. A few hours in this strange machine to prepare for the next Grand Prix justified this flash trip. « I had to prepare for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and in France at Paul Ricard where I never raced. »
It is perfidiously suggested to this young driver that compliance with the highway code was probably approximate. Leclerc giggles and recognizes that in Italy « cops are cool », especially if they recognize a Ferrari driver. The risk is rather to lose the time saved on the highway in signing autographs. On this subject, what is bred in the bone will come out in the flesh: the lover of beautiful mechanics goes into raptures about the qualities of his company car, a superb 540-horsepower Stelvio Quadrifoglio. « It is the fastest SUV in the world. It has the record in its category on the old Nürburgring... Do you realize? » No, we don't realize, but we have a little idea of the pace adopted by the Sauber pilot to make a Monaco-Maranello round trip (which translates to 900 kilometers eaten up in a day).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Between two shots, the director of the heliport sneaks up to the local hero to have the guest book signed. Charles complies with a smile, before posing for a souvenir selfie by pointing out his haircut that he describes as « coiffé-décoiffé » (styled to look disheveled). The lady is under the spell like the many young girls who, behind the fences of the circuits, devour this promising driver with their eyes.
And in his city, how does Leclerc live his nascent notoriety? « It’s no different here from anywhere else, it always provides energy to feel supported. » And when we talk about the pressure of finding oneself in a sport as competitive as F1 in the company of the crème de la crème in terms of driving, our interlocutor is almost surprised. « The pressure? Frankly, I have no problem with that. However, it wasn't like that when I started. This is the result of work and small adjustments in the approach of race weekends. » A question of mental settings in a way, probably as precise as those required by a race car. Charles Leclerc does not say more about his concentration methods and this strength of character that characterizes him.
On this subject, we are reminded of an episode that marked all minds in the paddock, a year earlier, during a race in Azerbaijan. Leclerc was then a Formula 2 driver. A few days after the death of his father — a former amateur driver who oriented his sons towards karting and motorsports - the young driver had sailed through free practices and the race. Winning was the best way to pay tribute to his missing father. « This was undoubtedly the hardest moment of my career so far, » soberly remembers this 20-year-old kid who doesn't seem to allow anything to rattle him. Not even the speculations about his future, which did not stop after the first points scored by the F1 beginner on the Baku track, from the fourth race of the season. Just like a symbol and a sign of destiny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A timid ray of sunshine pierces the greyness of the Riviera. Leclerc, a docile model, advances on one of the platforms of the heliport, his clear gaze focusing in the distance on a magnificent sailboat that anchors offshore. « It's Abramovitch’s, » Charles tells us. « I love the sea, I love boats. » It is true that the Russian billionaire’s boat is the stuff of dreams. Unlike the oligarch, Leclerc is not rich but he is a real Monegasque, who has always lived in the principality and attended his first F1 Grand Prix from the balcony of the family apartment which overlooks the starting line. He still lives there in his room there but still thinks about his emancipation. « I would like to find something here in Fontvieille. It is more convenient to reach Nice airport (by helicopter, for example), quieter too but with some nice restaurants such as La Salière which is the canteen of a lot of pilots who live in the area. I sometimes come across Max Verstappen or Daniel Ricciardo. »
Tumblr media
Despite the half-hour lost in the early morning, Mia, Charles Leclerc's press officer, is inflexible on schedules. The session was scheduled until 12:30 p.m. They will get 5 additional minutes, not more. The Sauber-Alfa Romeo driver will finally be able to enjoy a little relaxation before finding his way back to airports and circuits, hours of technical briefing and endless training sessions to keep fit. The real life of an F1 driver!

"The story of my growing up" or "How I came to know Formula 1".
Before you start reading this.
I want to warn you that I am not a native English speaker and there may be mistakes here. This story is not fiction, it is a true story of my life.
Trigger warning: bullying, depression episodes, parental divorce.
2014
It was May, the Monaco Grand Prix. My father was watching TV as usual and accidentally switched to a sports channel, there was a race on. I was nearby and my attention was caught by the TV, I started watching and after 15 minutes I couldn't tear myself away from the TV, it was like I fell in love at first sight. During this Grand Prix, Jules Bianchi scored the first points for his team, finishing in 9th place. I was amazed by the applause and joy of his team and himself. From that day on, he became my favourite driver. I was just a kid I was not well versed in some important things like the leaderboard, what teams even existed (but I definitely knew Mercedes and Ferrari). I was just a little kid who watched the races mesmerised and Jules was the ultimate winner for me.
Unfortunately, I didn't know about the race schedule and hardly saw any of the races, but I did get to see the Japanese and Russian Grand Prix. The first one was Japan, I was very excited to see Jules again on the same channel on my TV, I was watching the whole race, I was jumping at every interesting and high-risk moment. Until all of a sudden Jules had a terrible crash. I didn't realise what was happening, I kept going back and forth around the living room to find out what had happened. I only learnt about Jules' condition during the Russian Grand Prix when the commentator said about the accident Jules had been in. From that day on I didn't watch the 2014 season anymore. Every time I came to the TV and realised that Jules wasn't there I went to my room upset.
2015
I went back to the sports channels looking for information about Formula 1. It was the beginning of summer, with a couple of months to go until my birthday. For the first time in months, I saw Formula 1. It was the Canadian Grand Prix. Again without Jules. I knew he needed to recover from the accident as I had been in an accident myself a couple of months before and had a head and arm injury. I thought that since I had been treated and was running and having fun again, he would soon be on the TV screens in his race car, with his incredible smile that I had grown to love so much.
17 July 2015
My next birthday, family and friends gathered to celebrate. Even my godfather, who I haven't seen in so long but still love so much, came along. Everyone around was having fun and enjoying themselves, but in the evening I felt strange somehow, I couldn't describe it. And it's very difficult for me to do so to this day. A few days later, the Hungarian Grand Prix took place. At the moment when the commentators announced that the young driver's heart had stopped beating on the evening of 17 July, I couldn't believe what I heard. I couldn't stop the tears, I felt a sharp pain inside me as if a thousand daggers had been stabbed into my still very young heart. I cried for the rest of the day and all night. I didn't eat or drink well for days. I was insanely sad about the death of my most favourite rider.
I vaguely remember what happened next.
In 2016 I had not much time to watch races, my father often punished me for every little thing, forbidding me to use the computer and TV.
In 2017, my parents made the decision to divorce. My heart was once again full of daggers. I couldn't make many friends in the new city where me, my mum and my brother moved to. I had completely forgotten about Formula 1.
In 2019, I decide to switch on one of the sports channels I recently found. I was watching Formula 1 again. I was happy as a child, watching the drivers again. I started to understand more, I started to transcribe the racers' radios myself, because by then I started to understand English much better. Every time I thought of Jules, tears came to my eyes, but I stopped thinking about it.
In 2020, people at school started bullying me. I get depressed, I try to get away from bad thoughts any way I can, I watched old Grand Prix (very badly remember which ones) but it didn't help.
In 2021 I'm getting better but I don't watch F1, I took extra assignments at school. But I also ended friendships with many close friends, I couldn't keep anything in my head, my memory deteriorated. I got into an car accident again with my father, who I had been visiting for the summer all this time.
In 2022 Formula 1 stopped broadcasting in my country because of the political situation. I knew I had wasted too much time not watching it earlier. In the same year, I stopped communicating with my close internet friend who often supported me in difficult situations. I felt worse, I didn't know where I could now see my favourite sport again. I started to see Formula 1 videos on TikTok more often.
Since the start of the 2023 season, I haven't missed a single practice, qualifying, sprint or race. I fell in love all over again. It was a new breath of air for me, a return to my childhood, where I was a little kid who didn't worry about anything. I started to see more videos of Jules Bianchi and Charles Leclerc. I began to cry more often because of my longing for Jules. At the end of October my longing doesn't go away, I cry a lot because of the TikTok video with Jules. I remembered my dream from my childhood: I wanted to become an adult to meet him in real life. Unfortunately, that dream will never come true. I also cry a lot remembering this very talented man, his incredibly beautiful smile.
Every time I look at Charles, I see Jules next to him, his godfather, his close friend, his guardian angel, who is now forever with him, though not physically.
Jules Bianchi will always have a place in my heart, in my soul. He has been my favourite racing driver since 2014 when I was a kid. I'm not a kid anymore, but he's still my favourite racing driver. He made me fall in love with Formula 1, made it the meaning of my life.
"Time heals, but that part will always be missing."

american media: its effects on the teenage prodigy
For those who don't know, one of my favorite skaters is Alysa Liu.
Alysa is a 2x US national champion, junior and senior world bronze medalist, and 2022 Olympian.
But, one thing about her is when you look her up, one of the subheadings on her wikipedia is "2021–22 season: International senior debut, Beijing Olympics, World Championships, and retirement".
What happened to her? What was so troubling about the 2021/22 season that caused this all to happen at once, and at the age of 16?
From my limited research but somewhat extensive knowledge, the one thing I can connect this early retirement to is the American media.
Before I start, I just want to preface that I am very glad they retired on their own terms, and not due to injury or something worse. Though I do miss them.
-
Alysa was 13 when she won her first senior national title in January 2019, the youngest female to win US nationals as of today. She defended her title the next year, winning back-to-back nationals at only 14 years old.
Also in the 2019/2020 season, they had their international junior debut. During this, they became the first woman to complete a triple axel and quadruple jump in competition, as well as achieving the status of the first non-Russian girl to win a Grand Prix event for around 20 competitions. They went on to win bronze at the World Junior Championships in March 2020.
This bout of success caused eyes of every American media outlet to be focused on young Alysa. They started deeming her as an American prodigy, the only hope to have an Olympic medal in Ladies' Single Skating at Beijing 2022. This was still two years away from the Winter Olympics, and she was only 14.
The next year, 2021, Alysa underwent a growth spurt, which, obviously, is normal for a 15 year old girl. Because of this, she lost her triple axel and quadruple lutz jumps, causing American media to forget her, or worse, doubt and even berate her. If she can't beat the Russians at the next Olympics, who can? The media gave up hope on her and did not care about the effects of doing so.
Cut to the 2021/2022 season, Alysa's international senior debut. She officially secured the third spot for US ladies at the Olympics, and performed average at her Grand Prix assignments, placing fourth at both. She had to withdraw from US Nationals due to COVID, but still managed to petition for a spot on the 2022 Olympic team thanks to her performance history. Once again, she was America's "only hope" for a spot on that podium.
Overall, she placed 7th, the highest out of the three American female skaters. She claimed she was pleased with her performances, and that she was just happy to be in Beijing. A little over a month later, she won bronze at the 2022 World Championships, being the first American woman to medal since 2016.
Months later, they announced their retirement, and have not (publicly) skated competitively or professionally since.
They also archived all social media.
While other reasons can be argued for this happening, the main one is the pressure put on Alysa at such a young age to be the saving grace of American figure skating.
I know you're wondering, has the media learned and changed?
And as an answer, I will point you in the direction of 18 year old Ilia Malinin, who media has dubbed "heaven-sent for US figure skating", or even tell you to keep an eye on 15 year old Isabeau Levito, "America's new hope".

💬 Lando's words on having reached 100 races in his career at Austin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lando on his debut race at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix:
“I can’t remember all of my debut race, but I can remember a lot of it,” Lando says. “I can remember being on the grid, the nerves, and having so many things to remember. We practised that situation so many times in pre-season testing, but having to remember my stop laps, the plan for the race, and things like that added a lot of nerves, and that’s what I really remember."
“Then I remember being on the grid, lights out and the run down to Turn 1. It was not my best start, I don’t think, but a good memory. It was exciting, and doing it for the first time is special. I wouldn't say my first race was my favourite, it is cool and memorable, but it is nothing compared to a podium or a pole.”
Lando on his 1st podium at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix:
“I remember the whole thing,” Lando says. “I got past [Sergio] Perez at Turn 3, I was driving as quickly as I could. The gap to Lewis [Hamilton] at that point was quite big, but I knew that he had a five-second time penalty and that I needed to push as hard as I could. This is where Scenario 7 happened."
“There were no fans there, which is the disappointing thing, but to see the whole team, to spray some champagne – that was my first time in quite a while - was very nice.”
Lando on his first pole at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix:
“It was an intermediate qualifying on a drying track." “There was one run on slick tyres in Q3, in conditions that I have always enjoyed since karting: slick tyres and that element of taking so much risk. You know that if it goes a little bit wrong, it is pretty much a guarantee you are going to be in the wall or crashing out."
“It is about who is going to take the biggest risk, basically, in every corner. The risk is a tyre's width, and if you go a little bit too wide, you're in the water. It is scary conditions in a way, but I remember my lap and the thought of 'don't mess it up'. I knew we had the chance of getting a good result."
“Crossing the line and getting told that I was P1 was super exciting, it put a big smile on my face. My first pole in Formula 1 was a good one.”
Lando on getting P2 in his home race at the 2023 British Grand Prix:
“Silverstone was one of the coolest, most exciting races,” Lando recalls. “One, because it is Silverstone, my home race, with the fans and the atmosphere, but then, of course, because of the podium. Getting my first podium of the year and having the turnaround we had to get to that point was quite incredible. It was just very special. It was my first [podium] in front of a home crowd."
“To hear everyone chanting my name, cheering for me, and seeing so many McLaren fans, it is one of those times that you remember looking up to as a kid. You really feel like you are in the moment when you are there, it is a very special feeling.”
Lando on his relationship with his teammates:
"There have always been filming days and things that we have done with Carlos [Sainz], Daniel [Ricciardo] and Oscar," he says. "There are moments you don't even see on camera when we are not filming. We have had great laughs. "It is about sharing these experiences with different teammates and people which is what always makes it a lot of fun. I wouldn't say there aren't any specific off-track moments I would name, but just time with my three teammates and the team, sharing my experiences with them."
Lando on having reached 100 races & his hopes for the future:
After completing my first 100, it has got to be a step up from everything that we have achieved so far, that next bracket of success, which is hopefully winning some races and competing for more race wins and podiums," Lando says. "I think this year has been our strongest so far in terms of actually competing on genuine pace for race wins and podiums."
"Previously, it was every now and then. It was a one-off strong race, or maybe we had gotten lucky. Now, we are actually competing."
"Over the next 100, it is about achieving more success with the team, sharing more moments, creating more memories and taking some gold trophies instead of silver or bronze ones - that is my target."
"We have had a great five years together, but there are hopefully many more to come in papaya with the Papaya Army cheering us on every weekend."

Formula 1: The Haas team to retain Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen in 2024
Kevin Magnussen (left) and Nico Hulkenberg (right) will remain with the Haas team in 2024 The Haas team will keep Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen as their drivers for a second Formula 1 season in 2024. Team principal Guenther Steiner said: "We've had an extremely solid driver pairing this season and ultimately there was no reason to look to change that." Both Hulkenberg and Magnussen are vastly experienced drivers whose careers were given a lifeline by Haas. Steiner said their feedback had been "invaluable" in a difficult 2023. Magnussen made a surprise return to F1 in 2022 after a year away when Haas' Russian driver Nikita Mazepin was dropped on the eve of the season following the invasion of Ukraine. And Hulkenberg, who had not had a full-time seat since being dropped by Renault at the end of 2019, was drafted in by Haas for 2023 when the team dispensed with Mick Schumacher after his sophomore season, preferring a more seasoned, proven quantity. Hulkenberg has particularly impressed this season, having a comfortable edge over Magnussen in qualifying - including a season's best second on the grid in Canada in June - and scoring the team's best finish with seventh in the third race of the season in Australia. Haas have struggled converting sometimes strong qualifying results - Hulkenberg has been in the top 10 in six of the 12 races so far - into points finishes because of the car's heavy tyre usage. Upgrades for this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix, where the season resumes after a summer break, are intended to make a start on addressing this issue by reducing the heat going into the tyres from the brakes. Steiner said: "Kevin and Nico gelled well right from the get-go and together they've both scored points, and in particular, Nico has excelled in qualifying - getting into Q3 on six occasions. "Having not raced in Formula 1 full-time since 2019, that shows you just how professional he is and how he's looked after himself physically. "Of note is also just how much energy both drivers bring to the table, they've been fantastic not only in terms of their engagement within the team, but critically, in our partner activations and fan facing opportunities." Hulkenberg said: "It's nice to get things sorted early for next season to just keep the focus on racing and improving performance. "I enjoy being part of the team and share Gene [Haas] and Guenther's passion for it. We're competing in a very tight midfield and I'm looking forward to building on what we've done together so far and taking that forward into 2024." Magnussen said: "My return in 2022 had been unexpected but was filled with numerous highlights, and although this season hasn't gone quite as we'd hoped, we've still managed to get into the points and shown potential in the package we have. "There's plenty of racing remaining in 2023 and we've got a lot of work to do to continue to understand the VF-23 - that learning can be applied into the 2024 car." via BBC Sport - Formula 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/

Teams intro for The Edge Of Control (Part 2)
Wow, these bios are getting really hard to cut down! Hope you don't mind the extra detail! CONSTRUCTORS OF THE 2021 FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: (in 2020 championship finishing order, continued) 6. MacNeil Racing
First Grand Prix: 2015 Based in: Richmond, Virginia, United States Team Principal: Carter Serrano (American) Drivers: #9 Freya Larsen (DEN) #89 Dimitri Rybakov (RUS) MacNeil Racing, F1’s newest team, is the first American constructor since Corsair Racing's controversial bankruptcy at the end of the tragic 2000 season. Debuting at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, MacNeil surprised the F1 establishment when French lead driver Renard Clement finished sixth, making MacNeil the first team to score points on debut since 2002. Clement would record solid finishes in the midfield, while his teammate Claudia Guerreiro remained at the back of the grid and recorded a single point all year with 10th in Germany. She was replaced by Danish driver Freya Larsen, and the team was a solid midfield fixture in 2016 and 2017. However, it was the 2018 season where the team found its feet: powered by the Rossolini engine that had won the 2017 championship, MacNeil were at the front of the midfield. Larsen scored the team’s highest-ever qualifying position with fifth on the grid in Austria; she drove brilliantly in the wet race conditions to secure the team’s highest-ever race finish with P4. The team finished the Constructors’ Championship in a phenomenal fifth place, with 117 points. However, the team has declined severely in recent years, with many rumours of money troubles. 2019 saw the team score just 31 points; in a dismal 2020, that was down to seven. Renard Clement retired from F1 at the end of the 2020 season, leaving Larsen without her mentor and long-time teammate. MacNeil have hired Russian rookie and pay-driver Dimitri Rybakov to replace Clement for the 2021 season. Rybakov was appointed a seat alongside Larsen on the basis that his father’s oil company will secure the team the funding it needs to return to the midfield. However, Rybakov is rude, lecherous and has been observed assaulting fellow drivers after collisions in the junior formulas. Will Larsen keep her cool to ensure success for MacNeil this year, or will the volatile driver pairing bring the team to the point of collapse? Author's notes: Yeah, this is basically Haas. The car may be grey and black instead of white and black, but it's pretty much the same team. Freya Larsen is based on one of my favourite F1 drivers - Kevin Magnussen - and becomes a fairly major character in TEOC. Dimitri Rybakov is based on 2021 driver Nikita Mazepin, and is also a fairly major character - for all the wrong reasons.

7. Scuderia Capelli
First Grand Prix: 1986 Based in: Misano, Italy Team Principal: Walter Chemmel (German)
Drivers: #15 Nobuharu Koyamada (JPN) #73 Cooper Wright (NZL)
Scuderia Capelli was founded in 1986 by dealership owner Leonzio Capelli and his brother Matteo. The Capelli family had sponsored teams and drivers in lower formula across Europe for nearly thirty years, and the two brothers decided to enter Formula One.
Despite the Capellis' best efforts, the team remained perennial backmarkers in Formula One, operating on old and outdated hardware with a shoestring budget. Between 1994 and 1999, the team scored just five points. By the end of 2001, Scuderia Capelli had not scored a single point in two years, and were nearing financial collapse.
Investor and owner of the Europcar Formula 3000 team, Australian Anthony Barton, purchased a controlling share in the team in early 2002. Barton was famous in the paddock for his unwavering belief in the team: he could always be found haggling with sponsors or promising drivers that the disappearing sponsor logos ‘made the car look better anyway’. Sadly, after the 2005 season Barton was forced to sell the team to prevent bankruptcy, with new constructor Riedel Rennsport using the team to test drivers from its youth academy into Formula One. The team was originally going to be renamed Riedel Academy Racing: however, a petition by Scuderia Capelli fans and an impassioned plea from the last surviving Capelli brother, Matteo, persuaded Riedel to keep the Capelli name.
Scuderia Capelli continued under this new arrangement, and while the team never really challenged for podiums or wins, the increased funding and pool of young talents from the Riedel driver academy saw the team score regular points, and establish a presence in the lower midfield. With a reputation for brutally discarding prospective drivers’ careers, Scuderia Capelli has nevertheless nurtured some of Formula 1’s best contemporary talents, such as Daniel Albrecht, Alan Worrall and Nicolas Theunis, and hopes are high that the team’s all-rookie line-up for 2021 will impress. Nobuharu Koyamada joins fresh from his impressive runner-up season in Formula 2, while Cooper Wright, the youngest driver on the grid at just 19 years old, joins from a successful fourth-place rookie campaign, also in Formula 2. Author's notes: Scuderia Capelli are based on several privateer or 'backmarker' teams, but most obviously Minardi F1 (1985-2005). The takeover by Riedel mirrors the real-life takeover of Minardi by Red Bull and rebranding to Toro Rosso, except they got to keep the name :). The livery is the same blue, silver and red as Toro Rosso's 2017-19 F1 liveries. Nobuharu Koyamada is based on 2021 F1 driver Yuki Tsunoda, while Cooper Wright is the novel's MC and POV original character.

8. Verrazano Racing
First Grand Prix: 1995 Based in: Basel, Switzerland Team Principal: Janna Holm (Swedish)
Drivers: #48 Callista Fontecchio (ITA) #25 Heidi Leitner (FIN) Verrazano are one of Formula One’s longest-standing privateer teams, with a large following due to their underdog status. After the company was founded in 1970 and enjoyed major success in endurance racing, team owner Florian Verrazano set his sights on competing in Formula One.
The team recorded a slow but steady stream of points in their early seasons, gaining a reputation for being a solid outfit in the lower midfield. In 1999, the team started to use Rossolini-designed engines and chassis, and enjoyed an increase in performance, even appearing on the podium a few times. The team's best spell occurred in the late 2000s under the backing of German car company Eberhardt - their powerful engines allowed Verrazano to record their only two wins in 2008.
After Eberhardt pulled out of F1 due to the global financial crisis, Verrazano were forced to scrape cash together, rarely finishing in the points at all. The team has gradually built a foundation beneath themselves, with a consistent all-female driver line-up of Italian Callista Fontecchio and F1's only female world champion, Austrian Heidi Leitner. Leitner is 42 years old this year, and looks to be leaving the sport at the end of the season. Will her retirement bring down Verrazano's rebuilt house of cards? Author's notes: Verrazano are primarily based on famous F1 privateers Sauber, without the Alfa Romeo ownership, although Sauber do retain Alfa Romeo's red white and black livery. Eberhardt is meant to represent the BMW Sauber era. Callista Fontecchio (retyping that name will be a pain) is an original character with a passing resemblance to former Alfa driver Antonio Giovinazzi, while Heidi Leitner is pretty much fully original.

9. Woodford Grand Prix
First Grand Prix: 1971 Based in: Harwell, England Team Principal: Amelia-Rose Woodford (British)
Woodford is a popular and well-respected name in Formula One, celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year. A proudly family-owned venture, the Woodford team was managed first by Jeremy Woodford, then his son Richard, before granddaughter Amelia-Rose took over in 2011 as the youngest-ever principal in F1 and the only female team principal on the current grid. Operating out of their base in the south of England, Woodford’s facilities are rather lower-funded and modest than those of other F1 teams, which belies the team’s intensely successful history.
After spending the early 1970s as a privateer self-funded outfit struggling for race finishes, the close-knit Woodford team's work finally bore fruit almost overnight, winning their first race in 1979 and their first world title the year after with Australian driver Graham Vinson. Woodford went on to dominate F1 in the late 1990s, but their run of seven Constructors' and six Drivers' championships ended with Venezuelan driver Lisandro Cruz in 2003.
The legendary British outfit's last win was with Japanese driver Keiji Matsude in Belgium 2005; since then, a string of poor engines and poorer finances started a decline to the back of the grid. The team plummeted to dead last in the 2018 standings, and were forced to take on pay drivers to stay afloat. This decline worsened, and the 2020 season was the team’s first season where no points were scored at all during the year. Pay-driver Natasha Talley and aggressive, hot-headed yet talented rookie Matthew King, the reigning Formula 2 champion, could hold the key to the team’s prayers. Maybe they'll win just enough championship points to keep the team afloat.
Author's notes: Woodford are based on several classic privateer British teams, such as Tyrrell, Williams and Arrows. The team's family-run approach is similar to Williams, with a similar 'Martini' white, blue and red livery. Natasha Talley is a original character, whereas Matthew King is loosely based on current Formula E driver Daniel Ticktum.

10. Lancaster F1 Team
First Grand Prix: N/A (team bought out end of 2020: started in 1991 as Norton F1) Based in: Cheltenham, England Team Principal: Marcos Garcia Ortiz (Spanish)
Drivers: #45 Ryan Stone Jr. (CAN) #60 Evangeline Fuentes (POR)
Lancaster is a storied name in the motoring world, carrying more than a century of racing pedigree. However, they have never ventured into Formula One, preferring instead to race in endurance championships, grand tourers, and other forms of road car-derived racing. American telecoms entrepreneur Patrick Callaghan, owner of the financially struggling Pinnacle Motorsport team, sold title shares in the team to Lancaster.
Pinnacle Motorsport was originally started by Scottish businessman Peter ‘Tricky Pete’ Norton, who had run several successful teams under the Norton banner in lower formulae. Originally competing under the name 'Team Norton F1' in the early 1990s, Norton were solidly rooted in the midfield, bringing an air of unprofessionalism, casualness and often comedy to the circuit, with Pete Norton 'unable to stop fucking with people who didn't immediately beat the shit out of him.'
In 1999, Austrian driver Christian Spiedel completed perhaps the greatest underdog story in F1 history. Maligned as nothing more than a number two driver after stints in several top teams, the Austrian driver took the uncompetitive Norton to three Grand Prix wins. In perhaps the most sensational season finale ever at a torrential 1999 Malaysian Grand Prix, Spiedel spun his car just before the finish line, and reversed over it to win the race - and the drivers’ world championship - by just two seconds.
Sadly, Norton's bad business sense and inability to turn up to races with his teeth intact sunk the team, and Norton F1 were bankrupt by 2004. The team changed hands to Dutch/Belgian joint team Oranje F1 before selling to an Indian consortium, which renamed the team Pinnacle Motorsport. They campaigned the team from backmarker fodder in the late 2000s to a respectable midfield contender by 2018. Further financial irregularities caused a collapse, and American businessman Patrick Callaghan bought out the team in the middle of the 2018 season.
However, alongside consistent Portuguese racer and two-time podium sitter Evangeline Fuentes, Callaghan insisted his son Levi remain with the team in 2021. Levi Callaghan is one of the more controversial figures on the F1 grid, with many fans claiming his father's money outweighs his talent. He seems to lack the consistency and pace of his teammates, although he has been known to produce brilliant results on occasion. Eyes will be on Lancaster to see if they perform to their lofty expectations this year.
Author's notes: Sorry for the long post!
Norton is a slightly exaggerated version of Irish F1 team Jordan, with Pete Norton a (very fictionalised) version of Eddie Jordan. Oranje is similar to Spyker, whereas Lancaster themselves are certainly based on Aston Martin, right down to the metallic green colour (except lime green accents instead of pink). While Evangeline 'Eve' Fuentes is an original character, American Levi Callaghan is based on current F1 driver Lance Stroll and Patrick Callaghan on his father, Lawrence Stroll.

In the 3rd Junior Grand Prix 2018 JGP Lithuania short circuit, the triple lutz + triple toe loop combination was judged under, and the triple flip showed an overall uneasy appearance, such as stepping out. Fortunately, he showed strong performance in the non-jumping element [8] and scored 61.63 points. In the free race, he neatly succeeded in the triple lutz + trip길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon)le toe loop combination, which was judged under in the short, and earned a high bonus of 2.11 points, and perfectly succeeded in all six subsequent jump tasks. The strong non-jumping element also showed a good performance, receiving a high score of 130.26 points in the free and raising the overall ranking to second place with a total of 191.89 points [9], showing off its potential to win the silver medal following Alexandra Trusova. The free and total points recorded this time are길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon) the highest among all Korean female single players who have appeared on the junior stage, and are the third highest free and total points in Korean female singles after Kim Yuna (150.06 points) and Choi Da-bin (131.49 points). In the meantime, she has been evaluated as being far behind Yoo Young and Lim Eun-soo in terms of her performance and topicality, but this tournament provided an opportunity to be reevaluated by changing various records.
She competed in her first senior event of the season to secure skill points for the 2019 Four Continents Championships. She competed at the 2018 CS U.S. Championships in Salt Lake City, USA from September 12-16. At the International Classic길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon), she won the bronze medal behind Satoko Miyahara and Eunsoo Lim.At the 5th Junior Grand Prix 2018 JGP Czech Republic, she broke her personal best with a score of 69.45 in a clean shot in a series of mistakes. In the free, she also performed without any major errors and received 126.89 points with a one point deduction from the time limit as the music ended midway through the final spin. Although scoring slightly lower than her third competition, she again broke her personal best with an overall score of 196.34. She then won anothe길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon)r silver medal following her last 3rd event, behind Alyona Kostornaya. As a result, she became the first Korean female athlete to win medals in two Junior Grand Prix events in a row following Kim Yu-na and Choi Da-bin. has become She is also the only non-Russian player to qualify for the Junior Grand Prix Final Women's Singles this season.[10]
In her first appearance, at the 2018-19 Junior Grand Prix Final Short, she received a score of 62.51 when she landed on her hand while being judged under in the linking jump of the triple lutz + triple toe loop combination. In the free, she fell on 길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon)her triple flip and was under judged on her other two jumps, giving her a score of 115.40. She finished sixth in the final with a total score of 177.91. Since all of the contestants in the women's singles were Russian except for herself, she appeared at the gala with winner Alyona Kostornaya.
In the short game of the 2018 President's Cup Ranking Competition, she was clean but lost a little in the non-jumping element, scoring 64.58 to finish second. She performed rather poorly in the free the following day, where she scored only 116.86 points to place fifth, but with a total of 181.44길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon) points, she won the bronze medal behind Lim Eun-soo and You Young. This earned her a spot at the Four Continents Championships.
She missed out on the 2019 World Championships and 2019 Junior World Championships, finishing 5th in the final standings due to several mistakes in the free at the 2019 All-Around Championships.
At the 2019 Four Continents Championships short, she was judged by attention on her triple flip, and she only scored 64.42 points, but in the triple lutz + triple toe loop combination, she received first place in additional points among all players who길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon) competed. In the free, she failed to connect the follow-up jump in her scheduled combination of double axel + triple toe loop and faltered slightly on the steps, but overall impressed her composition points, receiving a total of 123.51 points. She finished the season with a final score of 187.93 in 8th place.
After her fifth tournament at the Junior Grand Prix, she ended her season with treatment for a sore heel that had deformed her bone due to her boot change. Although she regretted not being able to continue participating in the World Championships, she achieved the highest score in short, free, and total points for Korean junior players, as well as entering the first junior women's Grand Prix final after Kim Yuna, and placing in the top 24 of the season's best ranking. It was also a season to receive.
Appeared at the ice show held from June 6th to June 8th. Prior to the Grand Prix series, they participated in the 2019 CS Lombardia Trophy and the 2019 CS Nebelhorn Trophy, where they placed 4th and 2nd, respectively. After this tournament, coaches were changed to Shin Hye-sook & Lee Eun-hee.
She competed in the 2020 Youth Olympic Trials and made up a layback spin for the first time in a long time in the short, but misunderstood the double Axel sequence in the free and placed third, thus failing to qualify for the Youth Olympics.
She made her senior Grand Prix debut by participating in Skate Canada 2019. She finished in 8th place with a score of 61.23, placing attention on the triple lutz, under judgement on the single triple loop, level 2 on the step, and level 길복순 다시 보기 무료보기:(Kill Boksoon)3 on the flying camel spin and sit spin. In the free, she handled her first 3-3 combination jump alone, and in the triple flip, she was downgraded and fell down. Overall, she performed poorly, earning 115.70 points and finishing 7th in the final. In a situation where she was waiting for an additional assignment with Yoo-young, she herself did not perform well, so she virtually finished her Grand Prix competition with her debut.
In the short of the 2019 President’s Cup Ranking Competition, he received 68.61 points with equal bonuses in jumps and spins, except for level 2 in step. In the free, she got a score of 140.06, clean all the jumps she performed, and took her first win in the President's Cup Ranking Competition with a total score of 208.67. She has placed second and third in this event before, but this is the first time she has won. Fans were worried and disappointed due to the lack of additional assignments in the Grand Prix series this season, but they returned to the ranking competition with a solid appearance and won the championship, securing the right to participate in the 2020 Four Continents Championships.
