Theater Review: Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill

June 14, 2023 @ Citizens Bank Opera House (Boston, MA)

The Song of the Summer of 1995 was Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”! Hands down! The Canadian singer-songwriter came seemingly out of nowhere, even though she already had some albums under her belt and had been a child actress (she got her start on You Can’t Do That on Television). The accompanying album Jagged Little Pill became one of the biggest albums in history. She was the biggest among the wave of female musicians in the mid-90s who weren’t afraid to fill their songwriting with raw emotion. “You Oughta Know” was a perfect example, depicting a jilted lover not holding back on how furious she was at her ex for doing her wrong. I picked up Jagged Little Pill when I first got to college and really dug much of the album, but over time it’s an album I outgrew. But periodically I’ve returned to the album and there’s no denying her talent. The broad appeal and lasting impression of the album (today it’s considered one of the greatest albums ever made) is that it was catchy enough to appeal to pop and Top 40 radio, but edgy enough for the Alternative Nation. She’s also had multiple moments in pop culture: she gave Taylor Hawkins his start as the drummer in her band for the Jagged tour, she played God in Kevin Smith’s Dogma and she also appeared on Weeds among many other performances. Skip ahead to 2018, when a musical based on the album Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill began at A.R.T in Cambridge, MA (just down the street from me) before going to Broadway in 2019. It even won some Tony Awards. Last year, it began a North American tour and this month the production hits Boston at Citizens Bank Opera House, where I caught it on Wed. night!

Taking place in Connecticut, the Healy family prepares their annual Christmas letter: mom Mary Jane is still recovering from a car accident and has secretly become addicted to painkillers, dad Steve is a workaholic with an online porn addiction, son Nick has just been accepted into Harvard and their adopted daughter Frankie struggles with fitting in as a black teen in a white household and being bisexual. Nick witnesses an incident at a party that brings back some traumatic memories for Mary Jane. The music of Jagged Little Pill plays a pivotal role in the story as does Morissette’s post-JLP music as well. Worth noting is that the song sequence has changed and also the meaning as well, i.e. on the album opener “All I Really Want” (the best song on the album IMHO) was originally sung as one voice, here it is a voice singing one verse and then next verse is a different character’s perspective.

What truly made this more than just a jukebox musical was the book written by Diablo Cody, who is using the music to address one of her favorite themes, suburban malaise. So much of her films like Juno, Young Adult and the criminally underrated Tully address the idea of seemingly perfect suburban characters who seem to have the perfect family, house, and life, but it’s not as perfect as it seems. This play addresses a ton of topical themes like opioid addiction, #metoo movement, LGBTQ+ rights, etc. I think the strongest performances were from Mary Jane (Heidi Blickenstaff) and Frankie’s lesbian friend Jo (Jade McLeod). At times some of the characters bordered on archetypes (and almost tinkering on clichés), but stay with it, as the cast and the music lift it up. I liked the contrast between the parents and the kids both searching for meaning in their lives. It’s easy to compare this to American Beauty, but there is that same sense of confused kids and even more confused grown ups trying to figure things out.

Not all 90s music can lend itself to musical theater, but this album truly does. Now if only we could get a musical of Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville!

As we build up towards the release of HS3, I wanted to set out what has gone before and what Harry has already said - basically so when the inevitable happens we can try it make sense of what they are trying to sell us!

Harry Styles (May 2017)

Recorded in chunks LA and Jamaica 2016. Before and after Dunkirk.

Narratives - ha*lor, Kendall, Townes all as part of RS interview and Apple documentary. He talked about Townes for apple and the today show and in a crazy turn of events, was able to use the lyric for the song about her finding out he wrote the song! Amazing!The Kendall one they even brought back just as he went to Jamaica to record (literally two days before) Harry went on to say it wasn’t about a women but about himself. There was a book about pride and Harry wearing a dress in the album artwork. Also note, for SOTT promo which included RS, he posted the milkshake tweet not long after the article was released.

Plus papped with the chef the week of album release (lol) complete with shared Gucci shirt and photo from the kitchen of Erskine House. She posted on the day of his london show herself outside his house in a very distinctive jacket … which she then wore to the show. This was quickly walked back “he only met her a couple of times” and in came CR. In time for Dunkirk promo and then tour - lasting exactly one year.

Fine Line (Dec 2019)

Recorded during tour (according to post it’s) WS, Cherry, FL; in Malibu (Sept 2018) golden, falling and in Bath (Spring 2019) TPWK, Adore You, LU. How he wrote a break up song on tour… well 😝 also just to note CR had a documentary with her in it called cherry and she posted a pic of herself in the “canyon” and wearing cherry earrings - handy.

Lead single LU released on International Coming out day (Oct 2019) discussing themes of acceptance and the MV including both men and women.

Then Another RS interview, this time with Kid Harpoon dishing up the gf stories sold as about having sex and feeling sad - a heartbreak album with clear ref to CR and Harry referring to his “ex gf” for the apple interview (rare for him to use this wording) just to hammer it home, a voice note of her voice included and a pineapple on the artwork (she has a pineapple on her IG profile and a pineapple ass tattoo) on the CD the liner notes say it was included “with her permission”. This is omitted on the vinyl. In an interview she denied knowing. He was seen with her in the May showing her something on his phone. And after a year of it being missing, her ring and cardigan reappeared in time for promo … which is lucky as there is a line in a song about wearing her clothes. 🤪 Promo also included interviews where he talked about his sexuality and gender and dress pics/beauty papers and the SNL Sara Lee sketch. Liner notes included a pride flag in the studio and Harry wearing a shirt about blowjobs.

So. HS3 rumour has it will be Friday 12th Feb. Expect a single in January. With the cancelled Miami show and the Italy stunt it looks like they are carrying on keeping his name in the headlines before the launch- text book winter gf stuff - complete with insiders talking to People and US weekly.

Harry has said he was working during lockdown 1. He was seen at the same FL studio in Bath Aug 2020.

Kid Harpoon said early 2021 that not much had been written. The Sun, in autumn 2021, had articles about it being released “imminently” which was then denied - suggesting it wasn’t yet finished.

Harry arrived in LA mid July after MP filming and the Italy trip and was seen in a studio and with Tyler Johnson (place your bets that he is in the RS interview this time) before then doing the pleasing shoot and tour rehearsals (leaving not loads of time to record an album?)

In Dazed, interview done sept and at the Boston show, Harry said he’d assumed he wouldn’t do any writing while filming and yet he found that exploring the characters on screen helped him to see life through the “lens” of other people and he wrote loads. (Can we expect to see songs written through the lens of Tom - a closeted man who has to hide his love and pretend to love a woman??????) Dazed also continued the conversation about identity, the binary existence and saw him continue to wear what he wants. We also have My Policeman (which is obviously still in post production but will be released in 2022) promo on the horizon.

So what can we expect? I can’t see how there won’t be a narrative around the director. But in Dazed Harry shut down all talk of it (keeping his private life separate to work lol) and she was only allowed to allude to it - with all the subtlety of a baby elephant admittedly- but the reps wouldn’t confirm. Will it be, once again, something for all groups of fans? He’s never actually been in a proper “relationship” during promo. I find it hard to believe, given how it’s gone before, he’d want to talk on camera about it. They must know the fan reaction is VERY mixed. But there will be some hints - Italy? Friends to lovers themed? Settled? Some ref already hinted at? (My money is on board games or something that was on that Bode bag… something totally ham fisted that gives the game away)

Edit to add - Rob Sheffield was at the NYC shows - wouldn’t be surprised if he did an interview then.

It’s also very likely he recorded a Beats interview with Zane Lowe in November in LA (when his mum was around)

oh! this is mostly speculation because i don't fully remember all the details and i doubt anyone will ever publically confirm anything but sm botched the ngda act 1 launch. i'm fairly certain that the whole cycle was slated for a much earlier release in 2020; ie it was supposed to be superm concerts in feb and then he would do album prep in the spring for the original ngda concert dates (which i think were in may 2020?), which was probably going to be the official launch for act 1/criminal and then act 2 was probably gonna be mid/late summer. but the pandemic happened and everything got shelved while people figured out how in the hell to keep working and sm pushed his comeback back while everything was in freefall that summer. but pushing him back ran him into the tiger inside comeback in the fall and the scheduling was so tight that he was pretty much filming the criminal and tiger inside mvs at the same time. taemin was probably itchy to get something out before criminal dropped because ndga had probably been planned for as far back as 2019 and it's his most ambitious solo project, but 2 kids was the only thing that was filmed other than the concert vcrs at the time, so he had to compromise with having it as a prerelease. i don't think he doesn't like it, on the contrary i think he cared a lot about it since he wrote the lyrics for it and made time to film it while he was on tour and it has a second part (sad kids on advice, which! i feel like was maybe not intended to be a mini but a repackage epilogue on ngda); but i am 99% certain it was meant to be a mid-release as an entr'acte between act 1 and act 2, and so by releasing it early (and with literally zero warning or promo from sm) it fucked up his artistic intent and i am intimately familiar with how that can sour how you feel about anything you put a lot of care into.

About this, the situation with Harry's team is so disappointing tbh, leaving aside all the stunts, how they are handling tour is honestly insulting, also they haven't given him a break since 2019 when FL dropped he's done Grammys, tour, Pleasing and now Coachella. There's an argument to be done here that maybe is Harry's choice, cause he's a workaholic or whatever, but his team should know anyways that overexposure is never a good thing and that he should lay low for at least a year, if the rumors are true and he's gonna drop an album next month I fear gp is gonna get tired of him and find the littlest thing to cancel him. And going back to the tour situation they are not gonna need to dig deep cause honestly holding your fans money for 2 years and never mention it again is good reason to cancel him, God knows others have been canceled for less lol. As a last thought, I wouldn't put it past Full Stop to want Harry to be canceled as some sick and twisted PR strategy honestly

Harry's team is a bunch of nepo kids who got everything handed to them on a silver plate and rely on their connections, Harry's name and bare minimum to get by. They created the illusion of being Harry's saviors, when in reality, they would be nothing without him. Their laziness and conceit have been more visible in the past year especially and I don't think they expected the harries to start turning on them too. Glenne literally deleted her twitter account after she got ratioed one (!) time and Jeff only updated on the tour for America after people called him out in the replies.

The tour situation has been insulting to every fan and when it comes to merch, it's not better. They have been keeping their fans' money hostage for MONTHS or in tour's case YEARS, lowkey bordering on theft now, considering fans cannot get any update on what's happening to their money despite begging for it. They don't know any other way to promote Harry if they're not unnecessarily pushing his het image and I can already feel hs3 promo will be a mess. And the worst thing is, they know that in press, it will all fall down on Harry's back, as nobody cares about Jeff the manager, despite him desperately trying to make himself relevant.

As for the workaholic argument, see, in my eyes, Harry is doing exactly what he was doing in One Direction - working constantly and never having a break, but back then no one was calling him a workaholic and they were 5 boys. Now he is one person who didn't get to have a break since 2019 and I'm not sure hshq ever wanted to assure his longevity - they are 1dhq on steroids, milking Harry dry while they still can (can we talk about how they dropped Pleasing and just expected people to buy it? Their accounts haven't posted since December) and I don't expect them to manage any crisis since those geniuses were all in for holivia and we all know what that trash is doing to Harry's image right now.

I wish he could just disappear for a year but with what we already know 2022 has in store, welp, good luck to us and him.

I’m getting the unfortunate feeling that Louis will be invisible and MIA until that mans tour is over (not for the brainless reasons larries think he is) and there will be overlapping releases again :/

When Louis announced the AFHF, I assumed we wouldn’t see him again until year’s end. There’s nothing to promote right now. It’s no different from 2020. And it’s obvious that nothing has really changed for his career status.

(I was optimistic until we saw absolutely no promo for AFHF, and it’s completely disappeared off the radar.)

As for overlapping releases… I really don’t think we’re getting LT2 until the end of 2022, if that.

Kid Harpoon had plenty of time 2020-2021 to write songs for HS3, now that they have the formula down to rack up numbers. Harry could have inserted a couple lines of lyrics to be “co-writer” again.

I would have thought they would wait for HS3 to coincide with the movie promotions, but it’s possible that Harry’s plan is for a bigger tour next year with HS3. His fans are sick of Fine Line and the whole Love on Tour schtick anyway. HSHQ hasn’t invited press to cover the tour because Harry already has the ticket sales and his shows have been boring. Harry’s merely going through motions. He doesn’t have a tour photographer because he’s not excited either; the tour isn’t about music. It is a vehicle to sell his brand, his merch, his billboards.

Finally… I don’t know if HSHQ really needs to arrange Harry/ Louis’ timelines to overlap this time around. 2021 is a lot different from 2019. Harry got all the awards and his numbers are a lot different than with HS1.

“Larries” are obviously fine with Louis getting the worst industry treatment; they will keep consuming Harry’s content regardless, and ultimately that’s the only important thing to HSHQ— that people not turn away from Harry. Larries have proven themselves easy to manipulate, exactly the hysterical, overly emotional, fic-reading and fantasy-spinning 1D fans Sony marketed to. Older fans proselytize to younger fans, who are being misled by the twisting rhetoric of social justice to shield an extremely privileged man. Larries keep “waiting” for change, but are actually the agents of the oppressors. HSHQ played them brilliantly (but Larries were more than willing to be played).

So it’s not even necessary to pretend to give Louis the minimum, because giving Louis nothing hasn’t had any negative impact on Harry. Insulting Louis hasn’t had any impact. Harry’s fans’ vile behavior toward Louis hasn’t had any impact. Taking headlines away from Louis, keeping him off radio, diminishing his presence on Spotify, cheapening his brand to “boyfriend” and “dad,” limiting his presence on social media— all of this has only hurt Louis, while not touching Harry at all. And ultimately, the bottom line is the bottom line: HSHQ can now take the gloves off with impunity. Nothing hurts Harry if the money keeps flowing.

Louis has a career because of his own grit and integrity. Yes, he has a lot of fan support, but a normal person at this point wouldn’t host a free festival. Any other person would probably have given up. They wouldn’t regularly rehearse with a voice coach. They wouldn’t continue to plow money into writing songs and recording. They wouldn’t keep a hamstrung and ineffectual team. They wouldn’t continue to mentor younger musicians. They would have conceded. The fact that Louis Tomlinson hasn’t conceded is exactly why solo Louies love him— he gives us all hope.

He did say it, on stage during HSLOT21, and it couldn't have been clearer. He said it more obliquely in the Dazed article, that he was more himself than he'd ever been. He definitely has no inclination at the moment to smile in public, presumably because he's fed up of being photographed by creeps, or he doesn't know he's being photographed by creeps. Or, idk, he's tired and it's winter. TBH he seems to go around being fairly normal, when he's not working//

Exactly. Some people don’t listen to him and pick and choose what to believe. I think he’s at a good place with his career and family life. I do really think he is happy right now. Apart from the tour last year Harry has done no recorded video interviews or any type of talk show so we haven’t really seen him. As soon as he starts HS3 Promo we will see him like we did during the fine line promo where he was really open for the first time in along time. He can be private with his life but also pick and choose what to let the public see. Us seeing him or finding out information from him isn’t him being fake or publicity, to me it just means he is older and more ok with what people know about him. He said so in the Howard stern interview (honestly one of my favourite interviews he has ever done as he is really open, you just have to look past stern being stern). In the interview he expressed how being so private and closed off with his old relationships didn’t work out in his favour and I think this is why in the future and currently he is more ok with being out and about. This ain’t be believing in Holivia btw I just think people need to realise he grew up and he isn’t 18 anymore and after Camille who was his first longer term relationship that he said affected him a lot, he now knows he can be more open and not worry about it. He has expressed looking for ‘the one’ in 2019 and wanting kids, he is almost thirty and I think he does want that. All his friends and family are at that point and I think he really wants that, if he wasn’t a celebrity I would think he would already have all of that tbh.

I started writing in the CMBYN fandom late in 2019 and finished my first fic in 2020 (Flo’s Shows). I first watched and wrote for Good Omens in 2020. It’s been a hell of a hellish year and fandom and writing has been one of my outlets. Fandom doesn’t exist without people and there are so many who have come into my life this year as I (essentially) entered two new fandoms. The problem with lists (when one cannot consult AO3 for reference) is I’m bound to leave someone out. So please know this is an incomplete list. I do want to thank those who’ve encouraged me, cheered me on, dragged me along when I was stumbling, and have just provided a place to talk and vent and laugh (oh my gosh the laughs!). Hello! long ass rambling incoming, but bear w/ me I just need to let this out. To start, I was a big fan in early 2015 up until mid-2017 then I stopped (sorry tay, I'm not your strongest soldier 🥲). It wasn't until she starts doing promo again that I saw her in my timeline, and I thought oh wow, this is going to blow at any moment (2015-6 made us swiffers built different ik💀). But anyway, she returned with folklore evermore and subsequently reach a new level of success. For real, it's just so amazing to witness this arc. Seeing how ambitious she is--like you could make a tv series based on after Red losing that grammy to Folklore winning aoty, and you'll see the rollercoaster that is the 7 years of Taylor Swift life, it's just so crazy.

There's so many things I want to touch on, but mainly 1989 era. In the light of what we know she went through, I felt sick to my stomach. I struggle w/ ED too and we pretty much had the worst years of our lives together lmaoo. So, I feel her. I mean idk about her, but I always go out of my way to avoid looking at pics of myself from that period. I had mini ptsd flashback every time I was reminded of memories from my worst time. Let alone her having to sing songs she wrote and perform during that time for re-records 😰 it's really sad when you think about how she was the one that orchestrated the whole thing. I mean let's not kid ourselves--candids for like two years straight with your bffs + power couple publicity + striving for #1s and Grammies + her biggest tour yet + not eating + every single industry bitch tryna take you down? boy, I would have a mental breakdown every night.

Looking back, I almost felt complicit. I'm not gon lie, she did sold me first with her PR than she did with her music, so at least the overexposure worked. But man... it tells you everything you need to know how a perfectionist like Taylor works tbh. Obviously, she knows better now. But looking back, I wonder if she views that era as a necessity for her to reach where is now, or just simply as one of her messy mid-20s schticks (not saying it's trivial, but like "I know everything when i was young" yk?). Because how one of pop culture most well-executed era ended up in flames should be studied by sociologist moving forward 😩 like we know she was chasing 1989 commercial high with Lover. How it resulted in ME! should be a case for the fbi 💀 my theory is that she was surrounded by too many yes man (while big machine put her on a leash, they know what's up). Seeing her doc, while it’s cool seeing her sitting in the head table, not one of them dare or has the musical experience to tell her “Taylor wyd” Maybe her mom, but Taylor herself is her biggest hater, and her mom trusts her.

So, seeing that it took her a literal world-changing event to make folklore; in that she needs to make one pop album longer w/ Lover to arrive in Folklore—I was going through your tag; you said she was on a 'crisis' during Lover. Care to shed a light on what happened in season 7? I saw that one toe-curling tumblr post where she passive-aggressively drops a "💗" to that cupcake post about ME! being a disney song... it was bad that for ha? 💀

Okay so the masters situation was much more than just a business deal and having to rerecord. The issue wasn't Scott selling her masters, it was that he sold them to Scooter who managed Kanye in 2016 and helped orchestrate everything that happened, and that was the catalyst to a lot of dark stuff that she's alluded to in music + interviews. Like Scott was there from the very beginning and that would've been beyond painful, and the situation took her back to 2016 because of Scooter's involvement, and on top of that, there was also the Karlie betrayal.

Based on some of the decisions she made that era, I think she was also stressing about turning 30 and how her career would be affected. And if you read her interviews from back then, you can tell she was pretty anxious about doing press too.

Plus, we know her mom's cancer relapsed around that time (and I don't feel comfortable talking about it but her 2020 Variety interview mentioned specifics that were quickly taken out). Those are the main things I can think of, but she said in Nov 2019 that she had a difficult year and not all those things were made public, so there might be more.

CapSwap - Chapter 2

Summary of the fic: Bobby and Owen exchange their station and team for show called CapSwap produced by Taylor Kelly.

Chapter summary: New captain, new rules. Owen Strand arrives at the Station and the 118 is ready to have get to know him and to have some fun.

Hanging banners has been a tradition in the 118 since Chimney, Hen and their former teammates hanged one to congratulate Bobby on winning the bet his first month here. They have had so many captains quitting after a few weeks that they wanted to celebrate, mostly by pranking him. So, before he arrived, they used the biggest ladder they could find and hung a white banner that read “You’re still here!!” and threw him a bunch of confetti as he walked in. Buck got his first one a few months only after he arrived. He came for his shift the day after being fired and the red letters formed the words “You’re not fired! (yet)”. It was one of the first times that he felt like it was a real family. Chimney had a few ones too, the most recent one was from when Bobby came back from his suspension and it read “Your reign is over Interim Captain Han”. It was Eddie’s idea. He knew Buck was on sick leave but he filmed the whole thing to cheer him up. They bought enough cakes and banners to be known by the local stores at the point.

This time, Chimney comes to work early, with the biggest smirk on his face. He is not about to break the tradition, especially with everything being caught on camera. Taylor and her crew are getting ready and Chimney waves at them.

“You guys don’t wanna miss this.”

“Get the camera ready.” She orders her team. “I need a strong clip for the promo of the show.”

Buck and Hen are already next to the ladder, ready to hang what Chimney always described as their best one yet.

“You’re sure it’s a good idea to prank the new captain?” Eddie asks. Taylor directs the camerawoman to film his reaction as she starts taking notes in her little notebook. “Maybe he’s not as cool as Bobby is” the firefighter adds.

The second person directs her camera toward Chimney who’s grinning. Taylor circles his name in her notes, hoping that by the end of the month, she will get the juicy reason behind his nickname.

“Trust me, when you’ll see this, you’ll know he’s not really shy,” Chimney promises.

“Okay Eddie, now move your pretty ass on that ladder,” Hen says.

Both Eddie and Chimney climb the ladders on opposite sides of the banner. Buck is not allowed to do it anymore since he proved he’s not capable of hanging a banner straight. So he just stays behind Eddie, having his back from the bottom of the ladder where he thinks about Hen’s comment. She is right, he can’t deny that.

The banner is a lot heavier than the ones they usually buy. Chimney insisted that it must stay rolled up until Captain Strands arrived. They climb the stairs, eager to start their shift. They all wait on the balcony, the oldest holding on the strings of the banner.

A car finally arrives, and Taylor keeps one of the cameras on the crew when she directs the second one toward the car. She has seen pictures of him and she picked him for her reason, the man looks perfect. She knows the public will love him and she’s counting on him making a grand entrance.

Owen gets out of the car, with his Austin Fire Department jacket as she requested in the contract. She was not expecting him to wear such a fit white tee-shirt underneath but she appreciates it. It would look great on the promo. He doesn’t bother to take his sunglasses off, he only moves them down a little to wink at the camera she asked them not to look at. She can cut it off, but she is not sure she will want to when she will check the footage.

He makes his way toward the inside of the house. He is about to take up the stairs when he hears whistles coming from the balcony.

The banner unfolds as he walks under it. It’s a huge picture of him from a firefighter calendar, wearing his NYFD pants, with the suspenders touching his bare chest. The text on the banner reads “Welcome to the 118 Mister December 2003.”

Everyone is laughing, including the man staring at a shirtless picture of himself taken 17 years ago. He runs toward the stairs to introduce himself. One of the cameras follows him when the other is on the opposite stairs.

“Welcome Captain Strand,” Eddie says first. He stands straight and shakes the captain's hand. The other members do the same, and Owen memorizes everyone’s favorite nickname. Chimney is the last member of the team to introduce himself.

“I’m Chim-” he starts but Owen cuts him.

“Mister April 2019. I’m guessing you’re the one I owe that great surprise to?”

“Huh, yeah.” He answers.

“Can one of you show me my office and the nearest shower please? I just spent the best part of the weekend in my car and I would kill for a shower, and a coffee.”

“You drove here, Captain?” Eddie asks.

“I was not gonna miss an opportunity to take a road trip to our beautiful country.”

“I’ll give you a tour” Eddie offers.

Owen is taking the longest shower, so the crew decides to rest. The cameras are off, or at least off their faces so they can take a break. They are all sitting on different couches and there is still a free one when Eddie arrives toward his friends with a bowl of popcorn. Taylor walks toward them with a gentle smile on her face and Eddie walks faster to arrive before she does. He hurries up and sits next to Buck on the couch. It’s just more convenient to share the popcorn with his team, he tells himself while he looks at Taylor who’s sitting down on the last couch.

They are eating in silence, not daring to speak while she is here. Buck offers her some popcorn but she politely refuses. She looks even more uncomfortable than they are. Hen notices and invites her to the kitchen.

“Do you want a coffee?” she offers. “It’s bad but it will keep you awake for a long shift.”

“Yes, please,” Taylor answers shyly. “I know you guys all hate me. But I’m just trying to do my job.”

“We don’t hate you, girl,” Hen replies. “We are not fans of having cameras around though.”

“I thought Buck would be the one hating me after what happened between us.” Taylor says. She looks down at her coffee mug, taking one sip and confirming what Hen told her, it really is a disgusting beverage.

“Buckaroo is a golden retriever. I don’t think that boy is capable of hating someone.”

“What’s the deal between him and Eddie?” she asks while turning to face the couches where the three boys are chatting. Eddie is throwing popcorn in the air for Buck to catch them with his mouth. “I feel like he’s gonna murder me.”

“He’s just having Buck’s back,” Hen says. “We should go back to the boys before Buck chokes on a popcorn or something.”

They walk back toward the couchs, grimacing as they drink their coffee. Taylor explains some ideas she has and then she tells them that they will turn the cameras back one while they talk about Owen. She sits somewhere off camera and directs her team to start filming.

“So, what do you guys think about the new captain?” Buck asks. It’s not his natural tone and he has to force himself not to look at the camera. But then Eddie starts speaking and Buck has something more interesting to look at.

“He seems nice.” Eddie simply says.

“It’s hard to judge a book by its cover” Hen answers.

“We all did it with Eddie on his first day” Chimney says. Buck takes a handful of popcorn and sends it on his eldest friend who’s happily catching half of it with his mouth while the rest ends up on the couch. “What? I was talking about Hen’s comment, not about your jealousy.”

“Okay, first of all, I wasn’t jealous,” Buck clears, shifting a little on the couch to look more at Eddie. He can feel his face turning red from remembering that day. “And second, we were talking about Captain Strand.”

Eddie chuckles and adds “The man seems okay, we should give him a chance.”

“You okay Buck?” Chimney asks. “You look like you’re praying for an emergency right now”.

“Huh. I.” He starts, but Owen is finally out of the shower, wearing another tee-shirt that compliments his body. Buck wonders if this man already took a DXA scan to measure the fat in his body. He stands up and walks toward Owen.

“I think this is for you, Captain” Buck says. He holds an LAFD blue shirt, with the Strand name written on the metal name tag on the pocket.

The captain puts his long sleeves shirt on with the help of his youngest team member. He read a detailed file about these people but he still doesn’t know them like he knows the 126. He chose his entire team, learned to work with them and even though the idea of the show seemed interesting, Owen misses his team.

“So” Owen starts, he claps his hand and takes an enthusiastic tone. “Let’s get to know each other a little.”

“What would you like to know?” Eddie asks first.

“Come on, guys, this is not a job interview. I just wanna get to know the people who I’m working with.” Owen says. They all look at each other, it’s like the first day of school and no one wants to be the first to introduce themself to the new teacher.

Buck lets himself fall back on the couch and sights dramatically. He wouldn’t know where to start. So much has happened to them lately. Every person in this room could use some serious therapy and there’s a lot you can’t tell a person you just met. So how can the 118 introduce themselves without talking about all of the trauma around them?

“Okay, I’ll start” Owen says when it becomes clear that no one else would. “I’m from New York. I’ve been a firefighter there for two decades.”

“So, you were there when…” Eddie starts asking.

“I was.” Owen answers briefly before continuing his introduction. “My son and I moved to Austin a few months ago. He’s a firefighter in my station too. He’s about your age, Buck. Does your captain have kids?”

“You mean besides Buckaroo, here?” Chimney jokes.

“Bobby’s not my dad.” Buck pouts. He looks at Eddie, hoping he would take his defense but his friend just holds his hand up and pretends to zip his mouth shut.

Hen laughs at the three boys and answers Owen’s question “His wife has 2 kids.”

“Oh she remarried too. I have something in common with his wife. Do you guys have kids?”

“My wife and I have a son and we are fostering a baby girl,” Hen says.

“I have an 8 years-old son.” Eddie answers.

“His name is Christopher,” Buck adds, holding his phone up to show Owen the picture of Eddie and Chris he has on his lockscreen. “He’s the smartest kid!”

“Hey!” Hen cuts, pretending to be offended.

“I'm sure Denny and Nia will grow up to be as smart as Superman.”

“Are you two…” Owen starts. He felt like he might have missed some information in his files.

“Oblivious” Chim whispers and Hen laughs.

“Buck is helping me a lot with my son. Christopher loves his Buck.”

“And you, Mister April? Do you have any kids?”

“He’s dating my sister” Buck answers for him “So if he ever knocks her up, I’d better be the first one to know.”

Chimney almost chokes on the food he’s eating. Hen gently pads his back. He tells her everything, even the things Maddie made him promise not to talk about. She is his best friend and he can’t keep big news to himself. So she knows Buck won’t be the first one to know about the Hans’ new secret.

“You are dating his sister? Family dinners must be interesting.”

“She’s a 9-1-1 dispatchers. So you might get to talk to her while you’re in L.A.”

“Okay, bonding time is over for now.” Owen declares. “Probie, you start cooking while the others clean the rigs” he orders.

“Huh, probie?” Eddie asks when he sees his Captain looking at him. “My probation period ended last year.”

“According to your files, you’re the last one who arrived, which in my eyes, makes you a probie” Owen half jokes. He knows he misses his probie, and he’s probably trying to find a replacement for them. Judging by Chimney’s and Buck’s laughs, he knows the nickname is gonna stick for a while.

“Huh, the Cap was usually the one cooking.” Eddie says hesitantly.

“My house, my rules. Everyone takes turns in my house.”

“Then you’ll probably talk to my sister soon Captain, cause we are definitely going to call dispatch to report the entire house suffers from food poisoning.”

Everyone but Eddie takes down the stairs to clean up the trucks. Eddie looks at the kitchen, terrified. Even his kid that never complains about anything told him that he can’t cook. He doesn’t want to poison his captain on the first day. And the show is gonna be broadcast on national television, his whole family is gonna know what an awful cook he is.

The alarm goes off and puts him off his misery and he runs down the stairs. The team was already cleaning the truck so they climbed before he could even get to them. He’s the last one to arrive so Owen ends him the key.

“Heard you can’t cook” Owen says and everyone pretends they didn’t say a thing while they were cleaning the rig, “but I hope you can drive, Probie.”

Buck and Chimney’s phones buzzed from the back seat. Hen looks at the both of them, assuming it might have something to do with Maddie since they both got a text at the same time. She forgot her phone at the station, like she always does. Buck shows her the texts they received. It’s from a new whatsapp group they’ve all been added to.

Unknown Number: How’s the new cap treating you?

Unknown Number: Please, go easy on my dad.

Unknown Number: Yeah, we kinda like the old guy.

By this point, they’ve all guessed what this group chat is about but they get the final confirmation when they receive a picture of 5 firefighters doing funny faces while Bobby has his back turned.

Unknown Number: Thanks for lending us your Captain for a month. We'll try not to drive him crazy!
