#2021 Cpap
Text
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), recalled sleep apnea machines have been linked to more than 500 deaths since April 2021.
The regulator made this revelation in a Jan. 31 notice, saying that there have been more than 116,000 medical device reports – including 561 deaths – over the now-recalled devices. The reports stemmed from foam breaking down in certain Philips Respironics ventilators, bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) sleep therapy devices, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines that were included in a major recall announced in June 2021. (Related: A majority of Americans with sleep apnea are unaware they have it.)
Following the June 2021 recall, the health agency required the company, in part, to "provide a link for healthcare providers and registrants to access all available testing results and third-party confirmed conclusions on findings from testing polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam used in devices manufactured by Philips for particulates and VOCs, regardless of the Philips devices that the foam may have been tested in."
According to the regulator, black pieces of PE-PUR foam or certain chemicals – including invisible volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – could be breathed in or swallowed by persons using affected devices. Inhalation of degraded foam and VOCs could result in serious injury and may require medical intervention to prevent permanent injury.

The first complaints landed at the offices of Philips Respironics in 2010, soon after the company made a fateful decision to redesign its best selling breathing machines used in homes and hospitals around the world.
To silence the irritating rattle that kept users awake at night, Philips packed the devices with an industrial foam — the same kind used in sofas and mattresses. It quickly became clear that something had gone terribly wrong.
The reports coming into Philips described “black particles” or “dirt and dust” inside machines that pump air to those who struggle to breathe. One noted an “oily-like” substance. Others simply warned of “contamination.”
The complaints targeted some of the company’s most celebrated devices built in two factories near Pittsburgh, including ventilators for the sick and dying and the popular DreamStation for patients who suffer from sleep apnea, a chronic disorder that causes breathing to stop and start through the night.
Yet Philips withheld the vast majority of the warnings from the Food and Drug Administration, even as their numbers grew from dozens to hundreds to thousands and became more alarming each year.
“Black shavings in the chamber,” said one 2011 report that was kept from the government. “Contaminated with unknown sticky substance,” noted another three years later. By 2015, the year Philips launched the DreamStation, the company had amassed at least 25 complaints that pointed to a specific cause — the foam was falling apart.
In June 2021, more than a decade after the first reports, Philips announced a recall of millions of machines that had been delivered to nearly every corner of the United States and dozens of other countries. The company acknowledged that the foam it had chosen could crumble in heat and humidity and send potentially “toxic and carcinogenic” material into the noses, mouths, throats and lungs of users.
In a series of statements, the industry giant said it acted as soon as it learned of the “potential significance” of the problem.
But an investigation by ProPublica and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of the 11 years between the first complaints and the recall reveals a different story — one of a company that sought to protect its marquee products as stock prices soared to the highest levels in decades. Again and again, previously undisclosed records and interviews with company insiders show, Philips suppressed mounting evidence that its profitable breathing machines threatened the health of the people relying on them, in some cases to stay alive.
Federal law requires device makers to turn over to the government within 30 days all reports of patient injuries, deaths and malfunctions that have the potential to cause harm, and to take action to investigate them.
A ProPublica and Post-Gazette analysis of tens of thousands of reports shows that Philips withheld more than 3,700 complaints over 11 years from the FDA, which oversees medical devices. And the company did not launch a formal investigation of the problem until 2019 — nine years after the first wave of complaints and three years after the first known tests for the company found that the foam was degrading.
Instead, as the complaints continued to pile up in company files, Philips waged aggressive global marketing campaigns to sell more machines, including new models fitted with the hazardous foam.
The sales pitch worked: The devices went to infants, the elderly and at least 700,000 veterans. The company also promoted machines meant for some of the sickest people in the country, rolling out a new ventilator filled with the foam in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Philips didn’t stop even after the company learned the foam was breaking down in its ventilators in Japan and had to be replaced — and after tests in the United States revealed that the material released chemicals at dangerous levels. Among them: formaldehyde, a compound used in fertilizer, dyes and glues that has been tied to respiratory problems and certain cancers.

Oh also part of why I’m feeling better is because i have extreme sleep apnea and finally started using the CPAP machine they gave me 2 years ago lol
I had a sleep study done back in 2021 that confirmed I wasn’t breathing in my sleep. and, like….REALLY badly
In the 7 hours they monitored me, I had 645 arousals, AKA my sleep was disturbed 645 times throughout the night.
and the most fucked up part? I got 0.0% REM sleep
Tumblr media
Most of my “sleep” barely counted as cat napping, and I literally DID NOT DREAM for YEARS. because I never fell asleep deeply enough for it
So they gave me this CPAP machine. But I was depressed and on drugs and a little scared and a little embarrassed, so it sat in my closet for over 2 years. And about a month ago, I finally tried it
Guys, I seriously think a LOT of my problems have stemmed from simply being fucking exhausted
I didn’t realize how TIRED I was all the time. I was passing out at my desk. Chugging energy drinks for dear life. Waking up all throughout the night and cranky and irritable and sad all day because of it. It was SO hard to be social and talk to people
Literally the FIRST morning after finally using my CPAP machine, everything just felt …. So much lighter. The change was both subtle and overwhelming: I finally had energy for the first time in years
I even finally had a dream!! It was about Finn from Adventure Time!!!
The mask was kind of challenging to get used to, and I still sometimes wake up and find it on the floor because half-asleep me apparently felt claustrophobic and took it off at some point, but seriously even 3 hours with it on feels infinitely better than 12 hours with it off. That sleep is USELESS and usually leaves me feeling worse
So, guys, if any of you have sleep apnea or think you might,,,,,don’t do what I did. Take it seriously. So much of my shit was just because I was exhausted. Everything is easier with a good nights sleep. My blood pressure is lower now too. Use the CPAP if you need to 😭 💖💖💖

Yeah. Knew it was gonna happen. Feeling mad about this.
Health-related vent with some info if your thyroid might be a messy bitch too. Just typing it out so my head doesn't blow up.
Myopathy in Hypothyroidism (quoth VeryWellHealth, I looked it up to make sure I wasn't hallucinating out of anger/relief)
Muscle weakness
Creatinine levels tend to be normal
Cramping (uncommon)
Rarely, issues with the muscles involved in swallowing and breathing (rare)
"Rarely, hypothyroidism can cause severe muscle symptoms. One example is Hoffman's syndrome. This is when a person develops muscle hypertrophy (enlarged muscles). It can lead to significant muscle stiffness, weakness, and pain."
Yeah. Ha. Yeah. In other news, in my body right now: 1)Hypertrophy of a muscle on the inside of my right thigh, causing constant pain and difficulty walking. 2)Shoulder that locked up the Winter of 2021 and continues to do so on a daily basis, making it difficult for me to type or draw. 3) Regular back spasms. 4) Occasional spasms of all kinds! 5) Sleep apnea that's resisting the CPAP.
And, if we count my mother, who died before she turned 70, all of the above, just in different places (with the exception of an apnea diagnosis, she never got one, she just had a horrible time sleeping) plus difficulty swallowing, weakness, falls, and brain fog. She had a million different diagnoses, and no follow up on any of them when she got no relief. To the best of my knowledge, nobody ever told her, "Hashimoto's, and Synthroid may not be enough to treat it."
She either killed herself shortly after yet another surgery, or aspirated her own vomit and died with no help from the pain meds they gave her. "Issues with muscles involved in swallowing and breathing," yes.
This is my life. This has been my whole life. Optimistically speaking, this has taken half my life, and my circumstances are irreparably different because of it. Might I have had children if I knew my mom's lifelong physical and mental health issues were down to an under-treated thyroid? Maybe! And if they'd been treating mine, my uterus and ovaries probably wouldn't have been so screwed up they needed to be yanked out and thrown away. Might I have been able to hold down a job and had a career without that constant pain and anxiety? Who knows! Might I have had enough strength to keep pushing and get published traditionally, thus being absorbed and rewarded by the broken system I've devoted my total-lack-of-notoriety to fighting and working without? Beats me! Would I still have two living parents and some ability to get closure for what I went through growing up? A riddle for the ages!
If my new doctor sticks with it and finds something that works for me, this is all the marbles. I did not over-state how important this was. This is my quality of life, for the rest of my life. But I look back, and there's so much I've already lost that I'll never get back. It's just gone.
Before this, there was nothing to stop me from being unable to eat, or breathe, or move, and going out just like my mom. Her story would've been mine - only mine would've been shorter. Going down the generations, my grandmother had a lot of these issues, just less severe. It was getting worse. The Agent Orange they dropped on my dad surely did not help. I was able to figure out what was going on thanks to internet access, but I couldn't get anyone to confirm it or treat me. I fought like hell, and it took someone who loved me to intervene on my behalf. Someone with a Y chromosome. And now I still need One Good Doctor to see me through. Just one, out of all of 'em. Please, Lord, just the one.
If you got a little extra in you, God, I could use a few more - this gremlin has been ripping up my health for a long time and there's consequences - but maybe I won't die choking on my own vomit in 25 years if just this one works out.
This isn't me. You know that? I've been sick my whole life. I still am. I have no idea if the broken coping mechanisms I developed to deal with this are gonna go away. I don't know who I am. I'm not a ball of anxiety in constant pain that can't hold down a job, but I have no idea who I am.
I hope I get to meet me at some point.
Geez, and I hope you like me too.

Philips to halt sales of sleep apnea machines amid fears they can cause CANCER
Machines can spew carcinogenic foam through oxygen tube to the user's mouth
Cost for Philips to complete the settlement requirements will near $400 million
READ MORE:  Urgent recall for about four million Philips ventilators
Medical device manufacturer Philips will halt all sales of its sleep apnea machines amid fears about the devices' links to cancer.
In 2021, the company's CPAP machines, used to treat the sleeping disorder, were found to be blowing gas and foam into users’ airways as they slept, putting them at increased risk of tumors.
The discovery led to the company recalling more than 5million machines, but attempts to repair and replace affected machines has been dragging on for years.
Now, the FDA and Justice Department have forced Philips to halt all new sales until they address the problem with the old devices.
(...)
The FDA, for its part, said: ‘Until there is a finalized agreement that has been signed and filed with the court, we cannot comment further.'
A 2021 recall saw Philips pull millions of their Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (Bi-Level PAP), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), and mechanical ventilator devices for the same reason – foam used to dampen the sound of the machine can degrade and enter the airway, which carries a risk of cancer.
The foam particles can potentially induce irritation and inflammation in the respiratory system, which is especially threatening for individuals with pre-existing lung conditions or poor heart-lung function.
Exposure to deteriorated foam can also cause inflammatory responses, headaches, asthma, and adverse effects on other organs, such as the kidneys and liver, including ‘toxic carcinogenic effects.’
The foam in the recalled CPAP machines was made with polyester-based polyurethane which was found to degrade into smaller particles and toxic gases that would be inhaled by the user.
In addition to potentially causing asthma, respiratory infections, and organ damage, this foam is also linked to lung, bladder, kidney, breast, stomach, liver, thyroid, and blood cancers sych as leukemia and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Baby pacifier is one of the main types of baby care accessories that help to pacify fussy babies. There are various advantages associated with the use of baby pacifiers such as it offers temporary distraction, helps baby to fall asleep, and more importantly it reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Baby pacifier is one of those mandatory baby care products that are being used until the infant turns more than a year old. Hence, the segment has witnessed higher level of demand from the target customers. In recent years, manufacturers strategize on improvising its product offering that caters to specific requirements of target customers (parents of newborn). Thus, the innovation factor helps drive the demand for baby pacifier products in the global market. According to an analysis, the birth rate in developing/emerging countries is increasing at a rapid rate. The countries such as China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Egypt indicate a higher birth rate than the US and the UK, and exhibit great potential for the baby toiletries market. As the number of babies increases, the utilization of several key baby accessories including baby pacifier incur higher level of demand. For instance, India has the highest birth rate in Asia-Pacific, which is approximately 19.95 children per 1000 members of the population and the country is the most attractive market for consumable goods
Post-delivery of the newborn child, baby pacifier is one of those mandatory baby care product that is being used until the child turns 1 year old. As a result, majority of the hospitals and clinics provide baby pacifiers to the newborn babies as a part of their service. For instance, Philips Avent Soothie pacifier is being distributed by hospitals across the U.S. as it helps soothe and calm newborns. It is made of hospital-grade, durable silicone without any odor or taste. Hence, the rise in demand for pacifiers from the hospital sector, help drive the growth of baby pacifier market in terms of value sales.

After tests showed that breathing machines made by Philips Respironics could spew dangerous particles and fumes into the lungs of patients, the company in April 2021 decided to stop shipping the devices from its factories near Pittsburgh.
Philips notified the Food and Drug Administration and said it was considering a recall.
But for the distributors of the devices, the company had another message: Keep selling them.
Despite the findings of its own scientists that showed the machines posed critical risks to patients, Roy Jakobs, now the CEO of parent company Royal Philips, told his employees that the distributors could continue to sell the devices in their inventory, according to testimony in federal court.
The revelations that unfolded during a hearing in Pittsburgh last week over the parent company’s potential liability for damages casts new light on the inner workings of a global corporation accused of risking the health of patients who used its sleep apnea machines and ventilators, in some cases to stay alive.
“They’re still telling customers who have these devices that they can keep using them,” Caleb Seeley, a lawyer whose firm represents thousands of plaintiffs in claims against the company, told U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti.
An investigation by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and ProPublica published last month showed that Philips kept secret more than 3,700 complaints about the faulty devices over the course of 11 years before eventually initiating one of the largest recalls of its kind.
While lawyers for Royal Philips argued in court that the parent company should be shielded from claims and that the responsibility lies with the U.S. subsidiary, Philips Respironics, attorneys representing thousands of patients countered that decisions over the safety of the company’s operations were made at the highest levels of the Dutch corporation.

"Dentistry is more of an art than a science, more subjective than objective, resulting in wide variations in clinical judgements and interventions between dental practitioners." Robert L. Caplin, British Dental Journal volume 230, pages337–343 (2021)
Ref: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41415-021-2726-4
During my dentist last visit to Japan, his colleague treated a Cerebral Palsy patient with tooth issues by carefully examining their body & providing PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) & massage treatment.
PNF could be beneficial for other patients with postural imbalance issues that may be connected to dental problems. It's recommended to seek a doctor who can provide a full diagnosis & a holistic approach rather than just treating the symptoms.
Prosthodontist issue: TMD (Temporomandibular disoders / Bruxism) TMJ teeth, muscles, joint
The jaw joint never rest, working 24 hours.
Temporary Solution: custom splint, adjustment needed every now and then. Some exercise and massage needed. However, it’s incurable disease, long life maintenance with hope it’s getting better w the given tool.
In relation to Sleep disorder & dental patient : Snoring & OSA Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Sleeping Cycle: -Non REM sleep 80% -Quiet sleep -Light sleep -REM deep sleep
Help to prevent snoring: -No alcohol or sleeping pills before bed -Maintain Ideal body weight -Sleep in side ways
Key factor of OSA: In relation with breathing muscle & upper airway, abnormal anatomy airway, obesity, pathophysiology.
Sleep related Breathing disorders
Test using PSG polysomnography
OSA complication: -Cardiovascular: Coronary, heart, stroke, sudden death, hypertension. -Exhausted & Sleepiness during daytime: accident, emotional, depression, low memory & coordination, headache, impotency -Gherlin hormon (hunger hormone) -Complication:
Pregnancy complication, eye (glaucoma), bladder peeing at night, diabetes, metabolism syndrome, fatty liver, chronic obstructive, pulmonary, & gerd.
Solution: Oral Medication, Operation, Device (CPAP/ MAD/ DSA/ OA/ MAS/ MRA)
I’m grateful for the gift of the day : a Jap toothbrush from the kind & passionate half Japanese orthodontist who carefully examined my issues without asking for money since he couldn't fix them. He honestly admitted that it's not his specialty, but he still discussed the matters with me & helped me find solutions alongside other professional dentists. I truly appreciate his sincerity, guidance, & patience. Looking forward for some improvement in 3 months. Btw, Japanese toothbrushes are the best!
Over the past decade, I have encountered numerous dentists specializing in various fields. However, the most valuable lessons came from a young friend who had just graduated from UI at the time, specialized in Prosthodontics. Surprisingly, she turned out to be the youngest & brightest dentist I had ever met. She tirelessly guided me & referred me to other specialists, patiently supporting me throughout the journey. I’m truly grateful for her TLC, she is a real unsung hero.
The 3 dentists I mentioned share a common trait: they genuinely listen to their patients & collaborate with them to find solutions, which builds trust through a holistic approach by diagnosing the root cause rather than just treating symptoms. They’re truly passionate about their work & prioritize patient well-being over monetary gains. They also welcome my endless Q without feeling insecure, leading to great discussions where we learn from each other. Such person is truly a gem. 💎 Further reading: Book by Prof drg. Laura Susanti Himawan, Sp.Pros(K)., FICD (only in Bahasa Indonesia) 1. Memahami Gejala, Penyebab, Serta Kiat Mencegah & Mengatasi Gangguan Sendi Rahang TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders) 2. Peran dokter gigi atasi gangguan Ngorok & OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) Additional Note:
It has been a frustrating experience to have certain pain and unknown diagnose of the core problems. Currently I am still trying the available method that has been suggested by the 3 dentists above. I've tried so many dentist in the past apart from the dentist I mentioned above, it was a waste of time and money, but one thing for sure, the tooth trauma and damaged can't be undone. In summary, there is no such perfect doctor, doctor has their own speciality and way to approach your problems. But I do believe on holistic approach doctor who can help you to see the big picture (full diagnose, not just a symptoms) and pivoting to the solution. To find a suitable doctor for your tailor made case is almost similar to find a suitor. Find what's best available in your area and budgeting accordingly. For instance, Overseas dentist is not up to my budget due to the long term maintenance. Hope you all healthy and well.
