A Brief History of Aston Martin in Formula 1
Tumblr media
While most F1 fans will know Aston Martin as the latest iteration of ‘Team Silverstone’, the car manufacturer had a very brief spell as a constructor in 1959 and 1960, in which they build their own engine as well as the car chassis. Like many British based teams their cars were painted in British racing green, which continues to be the team’s main livery colour today.
While Aston Martin didn’t score any points across their five entries, the team did net 4 top 10 finishes, with the team’s best result being Roy Salvadori’s 6th place finished at the British and Portuguese Grand Prix in 1959, and 2nd at the non-championship BRDC International Trophy in the same year.
However the team’s poor run of form led Aston Martin to drop out of F1 after the 1960 British Grand Prix.

Aston Martin first returned to F1 as a sponsor of the Red Bull team in 2016, including a spell as title sponsor from 2018-2020. In January 2020 Racing Point team owner Lawrence Stroll took a 16.7% stake in the British car brand, which led to the decision to re-brand the team to Aston Martin for the 2021 season.
The 'Team Silverstone’ moniker comes from the various re-bands of the team that was originally founded by Eddie Jordan, who opted to locate the Jordan team factory directly opposite the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire.
While the various Team Silverstone team names could have their own post, the timeline goes as follows:
Jordan (1991-2005)Midland F1 (2006) Spyker (2007) Force India (2008-2018) Racing Point Force India (2018) Racing Point (2019-2020) Aston Martin (2021-)

Since 2021 Aston Martin have used Mercedes engines, which Team Silverstone have used in their various guises since 2009.
Aston Martin’s first driver line-up in 61 years featured German 4-Time World Champion Sebastian Vettel, and Canadian driver Lance Stroll - who scored Aston Martin’s first ever world championship points finish when he finished in 10th place at the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix in 2021.
In the same season, Sebastian Vettel achieved Aston Martin’s maiden podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he finished second. He also finished second at the Hungarian Grand Prix, but was disqualified after the race due to a fuel infringement.
2023 saw Aston Martin’s best ever season to-date, with Fernando Alonso achieving 8 podiums - including three in the first three races - which led the team to secure 5th in the Constructor’s Championship.

Their driver live-up for the 2024 season will see Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll be teammates for a second consecutive season. Their line-up also includes reserve drivers Felipe Drugovich and Stoffel Vandoorne, alongside driver ambassador Jessica Hawkins, who became the first female racing driver to drive a Formula 1 car, the AMR21, at an in-season test in 2023.
Outside of the team, Aston Martin are also joint providers of the Safety and Medical cars, which they share with Mercedes.

WEC practice resumes after car lands in grandstand during support event | World Endurance Championship
Practice for this weekend’s World Endurance Championship round at the Autodromo do Algarve has resumed after a car landed in a grandstand during a support event. Porsche Sprint Challenge Iberica driver Alex Areia suffered a huge crash at turn one on the Portuguese track. A video shot by a spectator at the circuit showed the car leaving the circuit at high speed and clearing the barrier. Images of the crash scene show the Porsche 911 GT3 took out several panels of the debris fence and landed in a seated area of the grandstand. The area of the grandstand appears to have been empty at the time and the Monteiros Competicoes driver is reported to be unhurt. The incident happened during second practice for the support series, which followed the day’s opening WEC session. The second WEC practice session began on schedule following repairs to the damaged barriers. The Porsche Sprint Challenge Iberica is a new series which was launched by Spain’s Real Federación Española de Automovilismo for 2023. It is holding the first round of its new championship this weekend. The circuit Algarve near Portimao opened in 2008 and underwent some renovations and resurfacing in 2020. There are two different configurations available for turn one. WEC uses the faster of the two, as F1 did when it held the Portuguese Grand Prix at the venue in 2020 and 2021. Toyota filled the top two places in the first WEC practice session of the day. The number eight car shared by Sebastien Buemi,Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa set the pace. Alvaro Bautista secures 2022 WorldSBK crown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 37 year-old rider secured the 2022 WorldSBK Riders’ Championship at Mandalika. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba. It Racing – Ducati) fought hard during the 2022 season, resisting the charge of 2021 WorldSBK Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). He became WorldSBK’s 19th Champion, and the second Spanish rider to be crowned WorldSBK Champion after Carlos Checa in 2011; Checa was also Ducati’s last WorldSBK Champion. Bautista returned to Ducati for the 2022 season after two seasons away and did so in perfect fashion, taking his first win of the season in the Tissot Superpole Race at the season-opening Aragon Round. He also left MotorLand Aragon as the title leader following his Race 2 victory. Rea was able to fight back at Assen but that lasted for just one day as Bautista extended his lead again in Race 2, with the newly-crowned Champion leading the way from Assen’s Race 2 onwards. A Race 1 crash at Donington Park dented Bautista’s lead but he bounced back in style; taking 15 podiums in the 18 races that followed including a hat-trick at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. A crucial part of Bautista’s title-winning campaign was his fights with both Razgatlioglu and Rea, particularly with the 2021 Champion throughout the Estoril, Portuguese and Argentinean Rounds. Bautista began his career in the Spanish Championship from 1995 to 2002. In 2002, he was fighting for the title until the final race. In the same year, he made his first appearance in the FIM 125cc World Championship as a wildcard. He became a 125cc Grand Prix winner in 2006 at the Spanish GP. With eighth victories claimed that season, he secured his first World Championship title. The Spanish rider then moved up to the 250cc class, claiming 28 podium places including eight victories. Bautista stepped up to the FIM MotoGP™ World Championship in 2010. During his eighth seasons in MotoGP™, he claimed three podium places and one pole position, with a fifth place as his best classification in the Championship standings in 2012. In 2019, Bautista made his WorldSBK debut with Ducati, finishing his rookie season with 16 wins, 24 podium places, 4 pole positions and 15 fastest laps as he secured second place in the Championship standings. In 2020, he switched to Honda, racing for the Team HRC squad. Over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, he claimed three podium places for the Japanese manufacturer before returning to Ducati and the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team for the 2022 season. With 14 wins and 29 podium places, Alvaro Bautista became the 2022 WorldSBK Champion at Mandalika. Bautista becomes the ninth different rider to take a Riders’ Championship for Ducati with the Italian manufacturer securing their 15th Riders’ Championship overall. He’s the third different rider in three years to take the crown, as well as being from a third different country and on a third different bike, emphasising the competitive parity in WorldSBK. The newly crowned WorldSBK Champion will remain with Ducati in 2023 and both will aim to continue challenging many records.

Alvaro Bautista, Aruba. It Racing - Ducati: “It’s incredible, I’m so happy. It’s a dream come true, especially after the last two years and all the difficulties. I want to say thanks to everyone who trusted me, to give me this chance to fight for good places and we got the Championship at the first time of trying. Today was the first time I felt a bit nervous or stressed, but it was in Race 2 on the grid before the start. I tried to manage the emotions and when I was in first, I was making a lot of mistakes because I had too many thoughts in my head! I just preferred to stay second behind Toprak, but he was very strong, so I could just follow him. So happy. It’s difficult to know what to say. I’m just so happy. During the whole season, I was so happy because I had a lot of experience from the past. I tried to be the best possible rider, not make mistakes. I think our performance has been really, really high. I think I had the best performance level ever from Toprak and Jonathan. They performed at a really high level in all races. I was lucky that I made fewer mistakes than them. What’s important is also consistency. I could beat Jonathan, a six-time World Champion and Toprak, a one-time Champion, breaking all the records at all the tracks which means the level is so high. We can win with this amazing level.” Giulio Nava, Bautista's Crew Chief: “We worked really hard for this; this team and Ducati. I’ve been working with Alvaro for many years and I’m super happy to be here with him, seeing him achieving these results. It means a lot. I’m very lucky to work with him. You create very a strong relationship together. We joke together. Alvaro is like my brother. It’s difficult for me to explain what it means, but it means the world to see him winning.” Luigi Dall’Igna, Ducati Corse General Manager: “It is a wonderful day for us. We worked a lot with Alvaro in the past and in 2019 we did a fantastic job until the middle of the season. In the end, we could not win the crown. Today, in the end, and it was a fantastic emotion. It was a special day. This is probably one of the best seasons of his life. This year, and 2006, were two really amazing seasons for him. He won the 2006 125cc World Championship and today he won WorldSBK. He’s a real fantastic rider and I’m really, really happy he could get the title today.”

TLRD: Gabriel and Barbara were working together these past years to bring back the Portugal GP after they were risked off the sport’s calendar because of Portugal's war crimes. Last year, after the renovation of the Algarve Circuit, Portugal got their license back and Gabriel is now the patron.
❍ 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗚𝗟𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧 —  𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴  ❜
ESPN:
Gabriel di Savoia is back... for the weekend. After announcing his retirement following an accident during the qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, Prince Gabriel is back driving for the Scuderia. His Royal Highness accepted to give the inaugural lap on Saturday (22), at the recently renewed Algarve International Circuit located in Portimão, Algarve region, Portugal. Gabriel opened up the weekend with two laps around the renewed Algarve Circuit and taking his father, King Henrique II, on the ride with him. Other members of the Portuguese Royal family also attended the Grand Prix; Queen Catarina, Crown Princess Barbara, Princess Ariel and Prince Fernando were seen in the Paddock cheering Gabriel on and, back on Sunday, to watch the race.
“It feels good to be back,” The Prince commented, but neither him or his team said anything about a possible comeback. Instead, Queen Catarina was all praises: “We have no reservations putting these matters into our kids' hands, they always do good.”
Other members of the Royal Family, such as Princes Joaquim and Jaime and Princess Veronica, were also spotted in the venue.
The circuit was originally designed by Ricardo Pina, Arquitectos. The new construction was first finished in October 2021 and the circuit was homologated by both the FIM on 11 October 2021 and the FIA two days later. The total cost was €195 million. Both Prince Gabriel and Crown Princess Barbara projected growth in their economy that justifies the investment. The development includes a karting track, off-road track, technology park, five-star hotel, sports complex, and apartments.

Nelson Piquet fined 780k for racist and homophobic comments about Lewis Hamilton
The Brazilian three-times Formula One champion Nelson Piquet must pay 5m reals (£780k) in moral damages for racist and homophobic comments about Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, a Brazilian court ruled on Friday. In an interview in November 2021, Piquet used a Portuguese racial slur in reference to the seven-times world champion when commenting on Hamilton’s crash with Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix. Hamilton called for action to change “archaic mindsets” after footage of the interview surfaced last June. Piquet, 70, apologised to the British driver and said his comments had been mistranslated. In another clip that surfaced later, Piquet used racist and homophobic language against Hamilton in a podcast interview when describing how Hamilton missed out on the 2016 championship to Nico Rosberg. Hamilton, who was awarded honorary Brazilian citizenship last June, is the sport’s only Black driver. The charges were brought by four human rights groups, including Brazil’s National LGBT+ Alliance, which wanted Piquet to pay 10m reals for alleged moral damages. In his decision, Judge Pedro Matos de Arruda said the amount of compensation was decided on “so that, as a society, we can some day be free from the pernicious acts that are racism and homophobia”. via Formula One | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/sport/formulaone

Tanque You: Remembering the Original (no #) F1 Portuguese GP
Tanque You: Remembering the Original (no #) F1 Portuguese GP
It’s like that, innit. Just when we thought the Portuguese GP would never ever return to the F1 calendar – here it is and for the second year in a row! This time, entertaining local wild life at Portimão and possibly a couple of circuit cats? My catzilla cat would love to have made it to the paddock to scratch Pirelli rubber, he loves to do that. Can he get a VIP pass, please? And one for me as…
