HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
July 7, 2022 (Thursday)
Today, President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 17 individuals who Biden says “demonstrate the power of possibilities and embody the soul of the nation—hard work, perseverance, and faith. They have overcome significant obstacles to achieve impressive accomplishments in the arts and sciences, dedicated their lives to advocating for the most vulnerable among us, and acted with bravery to drive change in their communities—and across the world—while blazing trails for generations to come.”The seventeen appear to have been chosen quite deliberately to provide a snapshot of a multicultural, nonpartisan society in which people work to overcome hardship and contribute to the public good.
Biden praised decorated gymnast Simone Biles, who has won 19 World Championship gold medals and 4 Olympic gold medals, for her advocacy for the mental health and safety of athletes, children in the foster care system, and victims of sexual assault.
Sister Simone Campbell is “a prominent advocate for economic justice, immigration reform, and healthcare policy.” Dr. Julieta García “was the first Hispanic woman to serve as a college president and dedicated her career to serving students from the Southwest Border region.”
Former Member of Congress Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords, the youngest woman ever elected to the Arizona State Senate and later a U.S. representative, survived gun violence and co-founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to gun violence prevention.
Attorney Fred Gray “represented Rosa Parks, the NAACP, and Martin
Luther King, who called him ‘the chief counsel for the protest movement.’” Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, led both Apple, Inc., and Pixar. “His vision, imagination and creativity led to inventions that have, and continue to, change the way the world communicates, as well as transforming the computer, music, film and wireless industries.”
Father Alexander Karloutsos has been a Greek Orthodox priest for more than 50 years, “providing counsel to several U.S. presidents.”
Khizr Khan is a Gold Star father (which means he lost his son Captain Humayun Khan in the military service of the U.S.) and “is a prominent advocate for the rule of law and religious freedom.”
Sandra Lindsay was prominent in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, working as a critical care nurse in New York. She was “the first American to receive a COVID-19 vaccine outside of clinical trials and is a prominent advocate for vaccines and mental health for health care workers.”
Senator John McCain, who died in 2018, was a prominent Republican politician from Arizona, famous as an independent thinker who often bucked his party to do what he considered right.
Diane Nash helped to found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) that “organized some of the most important civil rights campaigns of the 20th century.”
Olympic and two-time World Cup champion soccer player Megan Rapinoe works “for gender pay equality, racial justice, and LGBTQI+ rights.”
Former Wyoming senator Alan Simpson, a Republican, has been “a prominent advocate on issues including campaign finance reform, responsible governance, and marriage equality.”
Richard Trumka, who died in 2021, led the AFL-CIO for more than a decade and worked for social and economic justice.
Brigadier General Wilma Vaught broke gender barriers as she rose through the ranks of the U.S. Air Force. “When she retired in 1985, she was one of only seven women generals in the Armed Forces.”
Award-winning actor, director, and producer Denzel Washington has “served as National Spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for over 25 years.”
And civil rights advocate Raúl Yzaguirre, who was a U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, led the National Council of La Raza for 30 years.
“Decorated athletes and military heroes, artists, civil rights giants, activists and trailblazing representatives, intellectuals, and innovators,” Biden tweeted. “That's America. And these are our 2022 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients.”
President John F. Kennedy established these awards for ”especially meritorious contributions to… [t]he security or national interests of the United States, or…world peace, or…cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” “
In a period when the national government must call upon an increasing portion of the talents and energies of its citizens,” Kennedy said, “it is clearly appropriate to provide ways to recognize and reward the work of persons, within and without the Government, who contribute significantly to the quality of American life.” And yet for all their apparent civic-minded origins, a 2018 study by political scientists E. Fletcher McClellan, Christopher Devine, and Kyle C. Kopko showed that the medals have become increasingly political since 1981 as presidents seek to reward donors and associate their presidencies with individuals who will appeal to their voters or show their administrations in a good light.
The difference between Biden’s first 17 award recipients and those former president Trump honored reflects their different visions of the country. Trump favored white people and focused on athletes, especially golfers; cultural icons (Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley); or icons in the Republican Party’s rightward swing (media figure Rush Limbaugh, economist Arthur Laffer, jurist Antonin Scalia). Trump also awarded a medal to Representative Devin Nunes (R-CA) on January 4, 2021, and, on January 11, 2021, to Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH).
That vision of the government as a way to reward loyalists might have moved past legal boundaries.
New York Times journalist Michael S. Schmidt yesterday reported that both former FBI director James Comey and his deputy Andrew McCabe were tapped for extremely rare invasive tax audits by the Internal Revenue Service during the Trump administration. Those audits are supposed to be random, and the chances that both Comey and McCabe, whom Trump singled out as enemies for their role in the Russia investigation, were randomly chosen seem small. The two men were unaware the other had gone through the deep audit until a reporter told them.
Today, the IRS director Charles Rettig, the Trump appointee under whom the audits took place, asked the inspector general of the Treasury Department to investigate the matter.
There was international condemnation of right-wing policies in the U.S. today, when the European Parliament voted 324 to 155, with 38 abstaining, to condemn the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision recognizing the constitutional right to abortion
. It also demanded that the European Union recognize the right to abortion in its charter, and to provide "safe, legal and free abortion services, pre-natal and maternal healthcare services, voluntary family planning, youth-friendly services, and HIV prevention, treatment and support, without discrimination."
U.S. Secret Service director James Murray announced his retirement from the agency today to take a position as security chief at Snapchat’s parent company, Snap. Former president Trump appointed Murray to the head of the Secret Service in May 2019. Questions about the loyalties of certain Secret Service agents have swirled since January 6, but the White House said the resignation was not connected to the recent testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, aide to Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, who mentioned hearing of a physical altercation between Trump and an agent after Trump spoke at the Ellipse on January 6.
In the U.K. today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson stepped down as head of the Conservative Party after dozens of officials in his government resigned over repeated scandals. He says he will step down as prime minister when the party chooses his replacement, likely this fall. Party leaders may force him out sooner. In a statement, Biden said that “the special relationship between our people remains strong and enduring…. I look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the government of the United Kingdom, as well as our Allies and partners around the world, on a range of important priorities. That includes maintaining a strong and united approach to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Putin's brutal war on their democracy, and holding Russia accountable for its actions." (HE RESIGNED)
Tonight, former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot in the chest while he was giving a campaign speech in the city of Nara. His condition is critical. Police have arrested a male suspect in the shooting. Washington Post Tokyo/Seoul bureau chief Michele Ye Hee Lee tweeted: “Can't overstate how shocking this shooting is—not only because Abe is very popular and prominent, but also because gun violence is extremely rare incident in Japan, a country with some of the world's strictest gun laws.” (ABE WAS NOTED TO BE THE JAPANESE TRUMP, VERY CORRUPT AND NOT WELL LIKED)
President of the European Council Charles Michel tweeted that Abe is “a true friend, fierce defender of multilateral order & democratic values.” He promised that the European Union stands with Japan and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Finally, former president Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary today. Theirs is the longest presidential marriage in our history. They were married in Plains, Georgia, on this date in 1946.

Getting to the bottom of gladiators, part 1.
In my forthcoming research paper on the political and social importance of gladiatorial combat, I start out with a modern analogy: gladiators versus the NCAA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has been around much longer than I realized: since 1910. The regulatory agency dismantled the model of student control coupled with faculty oversight for two reasons. One was that schools bent and broke the rules repeatedly in order to attract athletes; the second reason was fatalities: 1905 saw >18 deaths and >100 major injuries in intercollegiate football (see Rodney Smith 2000). Eventually, the organization expanded to include not only setting rules, but organizing championships. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, the NCAA had transformed from regulator to enabler. The rise of competitive “divisions” led to further corruption as schools vied with one another, all seeking to recruit the best athletes fresh out of high school. Television revenue had been increasing for years when the Supreme Court found that the NCAA violated anti-trust laws. Schools were then able to collect revenue from televised football games. Football and basketball were and remain the two highest revenue-producing male sports. Revenue from these televised games is then spread between the NCAA and the school, which uses the money to fund male sports that do not generate revenue, e.g. lacrosse, golf, tennis; and to fund intercollegiate women’s sports.
Where are the athletes in all of this? Both professional and college basketball and football are predominantly comprised of African-American male athletes, whose agency is significantly reduced once they join a team. Intense training regimens can impact both physical and mental health, sometimes to the detriment of academic performance. Some coaches go as far as restricting social lives of players, inflicting punishments, or conversely helping them cheat on tests and otherwise avoid academic responsibilities. I have not begun to touch on the physical toll of contact sports; it treads close to stating the obvious. However, one number that stood out to me as I was making this analogy is that, according to Boston University, an analysis of former NFL players’ remains shows that 345 out of 376 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy when they died. CTE is a brain disease that forms due to repeated head hitting, as seen in football; similarly, basketball can result in chronic leg injuries and reduced mobility later in life. That’s the NFL, not the NCAA, but the NFL is often the endgame of college players. Some of them may have had the goal of playing in the NFL since before high school, and their statistics are not as easy to come by.
Contact sports put a lot of wear and tear on the human body, but they are a labor of love. How many athletes are following in their parents’ or siblings’ or idol’s footsteps? How many have been tackling and dribbling since the moment they could walk? Colleges and the NCAA have been capitalizing on the love of sport for over a century. They have been capitalizing off the dreams of young black men who describe sports as their way of coping with life’s myriad disadvantages. Basketball and football are footholds out of the hood or out of poverty; and if professional sports aren’t the endgame, then a college degree is one path towards upward mobility. It wasn’t until 2021 that the NCAA lifted a ban on athletes capitalizing off their own images. Now college athletes see millions in revenue through endorsements and social media. But for over a century before that, the NCAA and colleges made money off the backs of young black men, many of whom did not see fame or even financial security; some may have seen their educations suffer, or may have even been unable to complete them, either due to poor grades or poor performance on the team that resulted in a rescinded scholarship. It’s difficult to imagine the neglected considerations of something so ingrained into every level of America culture. At the end of the day, modern contact sports like basketball and football became what they are through the exploitation of black bodies, specifically young black man. They ride on the coattails of chattel slavery and minstrelsy, two forms of bodily commodification and exploitation. Yet many still enjoy them uncritically.
It’s been a joy over the last few months to draw connections like these. When I see people talk about the depressing lives of gladiators and the cruelty of munera as an institution, I immediately look for paradigms in the present. This obviously isn’t a perfect parallel given that a huge proportion of gladiators were prisoners of war; the explosive popularity of gladiatorial shows in the late Republic correspond to Roman victories in the Punic Wars. Some, however, were freemen facing economic hardship; others were elites who sought to escape the oppressive expectations of upperclass society. They all took the same oath and underwent the same training, with no promise of upward mobility; and they all fought for their lives in the arena. Their bodies were for the profit of others. It’s important to note that fights were rarely to the death, nor was this the expectation of the audience: the gladiatorial show was in the afternoon, whereas public executions had already taken place in the morning. Sometimes they fought with blunted weapons, ad digitum, or “to the finger”, a sign of submission. They had state-of-the-art medical care, because even if they were dispensable in the long run, gladiators were expensive. And they had fans, attested in both housewares and graffiti. It might behoove us to think of gladiatorial shows as WWE matches: you’re watching for a theatrical, spectacular fight, but no one expects a folding chair body slam to end in their favorite fighter being dragged away deceased.
I always feel the need to disclaim that when I say I love gladiators, I’m not glorifying them. I’m not. War and slavery are obviously horrible, and life for a gladiator was no joyride. My research is more of an attempt to place myself in the shoes of someone who may have taken pleasure in live, lethal combat; and to return agency to the men (and occasionally, women) who have been stripped of their agency both in the past and in the present as we uncritically draw conclusions about their realities within the context of their world. We like to pretend that, with our modern medicine, globalized economy, and basic, if oft-neglected concept of human rights, we have room to judge Ancient Roman institutions. I personally think that we’re just more technologically advanced, more sophisticated in the suffering we inflict, and better able to conjure excuses for the shortcomings in existing systems and evade culpability thereof. Ancient Rome had a high mortality rate, and at the peak of the empire, 1.5% of the population controlled most of the wealth. Civil war was a near constant, as were wars against neighboring powers. Meanwhile, our once-high mortality rate in America is declining; half of the world’s net wealth belongs to 1% of the population; and the western world continues to sow strife by instigating and supporting wars in the Middle East.
I’m by no means an economist, nor a military strategist, nor a polisci expert, but I believe that when it comes to our Roman ancestors, if there was a ratio of, say, technological and intellectual enlightenment versus a commensurate measure suffering, then a lower mortality rate and higher standard of living do not necessarily give us room to judge.

Chili’s humble beginnings heat up with history Classic dish also features a myriad of variations
Tumblr media
https://www.timesherald.com/2023/03/23/chilis-humble-beginnings-heat-up-with-history/
Beans or no beans . . . seems to be the question or debate when it comes to chili. The dish is popular on restaurant menus, and in competitions that occur throughout the year to determine the best chili recipes.  And there are chili organizations including the International Chili Society https://www.chilicookoff.com/  whose mission is “to uphold the same core value of our founders by bringing together to enjoy healthy competition and America’s great culinary creation—CHILI. Our mission is to continuously improve chili while raising money for charities and non-profits year-round.”
Their mission is interesting, because we think of chili as a winter dish, however, as stated in their mission, chili competitions are popular events year ‘round. Notice, too, it is America’s creation. One thing that I learned in researching the dish is chili’s history is somewhat blurred.
A newer chili cookbook to join my collection is “Seriously Good Chili Cookbook: 177 of the Best Recipes in the World,” by Brian Baumgartner of the Emmy-winning show “The Office” where he played the accountant, Kevin Malone (2022, Fox Chapel Publishing, $24.99) His passion of making chili did not go unnoticed. He was invited to be a judge at the 2021 World Championship Chili Cook-Off sponsored by the International Chili Society.
Baumgartner mentions that the history of chili is “even a bit heated.” He said, “By many accounts, it is a red-blooded American dish; it did not originate in Mexico. In fact, Mexico denies any association with chili, and only a handful of spots serve it. Parts of Mexico that do serve chili only do so to please tourists.”
Was it in the 1880’s at San Antonio’s downtown, known for its famous Hispanic outdoor vendors called “chili queens” where the dish was first introduced? It is said that chili became popular outside of Texas at the San Antonio Chili stand during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Then, in the early 1900s chili parlors sprung up beyond Texas.
Baumgartner’s book gives myriad stories about the origins of the humble dish. He writes, some historians said, “the earliest versions of chili were made by the poorest class of people to stretch what little meat they could afford.”
“A Southwestern Native American legend claims the first chili con carne recipe was written in the 17th century by a mysterious nun, Sister Mary of Agreda of Spain.”  Another theory, “in 1731, a group of sixteen families emigrated to Texas to what is now San Antonio, from the Canary Islands. Historians say the women in those families would make a spicy Spanish stew that became known as ‘Soup of the Devil.’”
There is a cowboy story, too. A recipe from 1850 by Texan cowboys took dried beef, fat, pepper, salt and chile peppers and made “chili bricks” that were later rehydrated using very hot water. This became their go-to food during their long travels.
Baumgartner writes that “the Texas prison system made such good bowls of chili that inmates would rate each jail based on that provision alone!” Would you believe that once prisoners were released, they would request the chili recipe because it was what they missed most?
He writes about “Chili Goes Hollywood.” In 1936 Chasen’s Restaurant owner kept his recipe secretive. Famous people or their chauffeurs would come to the back door to buy the chili. The icons included Jack Benny, J. Edgar Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt. He writes, “it is even said it was Clark Gable’s last meal and that Elizabeth Taylor had 10 quarts sent to her while she was filming Cleopatra in Rome, Italy.”
Several sources mentioned that President Lyndon B. Johnson, a chili lover said, “Chili concocted outside of Texas is usually a weak, apologetic imitation of the real thing. One of the first things I do when I get home to Texas is to have a bowl of red. There is simply nothing better.” Rumor has it that his wife, Lady Bird received many requests for her recipe, so she had her staff print cards with the Pedernales River Chili recipe. It was named after the location of President Johnson’s Texas ranch.
Baumgartner said, his goal in writing the book “is to share a collection of seriously good recipes—whether they are passed down from days of old or new and original takes.”
Whether it be Texas or Cincinnati chili, beans or no beans, meat or no meat, you’ll enjoy Baumgartner’s sense of humor, and his travels to find the best chili from people of different cultural backgrounds, and differing tastes. One thing, though, every chili recipe has one thing in common…chili pepper. He writes, “by making these recipes yourself, you’re taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime journey I went on myself to find them.”
It is clear that this humble dish is much more than its simple ingredients. The stories about its beginning are as varied as the ingredients used in making the perfect chili. It’s time to get out your biggest pot and make a batch of America’s iconic dish. Below are a few recipes from Baumgartner’s book.

Brian’s Seriously Good Chili Recipe by Brian Baumgartner
The headnote says, “This is it, folks. My own personal go-to chili recipe. Has it been passed down for generations? No. But it serves as my own best chili recipe that I cook all the time. Don’t be afraid to play! Like it spicier? Add red pepper flakes or Spicy Bush’s Chili Beans. Like it thicker? Feel free to cook this over the stove all day. (Just add water as needed for best consistency.) I felt it was important to add my personal favorite recipe to this book but know that it is always changing. I love exploring new flavors and employing new techniques every time I make it – so you should feel free to make any adjustments.”

1 tablespoon grapeseed oil (or cooking oil)
1 large yellow onion (or 1 cup shallots), chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, diced
2 pounds lean ground turkey (or lean ground beef), undrained
One 6-ounce can tomato paste
One 24-ounce can diced tomatoes
One 16-ounce can tomato sauce
½ cup water (optional)
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ancho chile powder
3 teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon sugar
1 (16-ounce can) Bush’s® Pinto Beans in a Mild Chili Sauce, undrained
1 (16-ounce can) Bush’s® Kidney Beans in a Mild Chili Sauce, undrained
Garnish: shredded cheddar cheese
1.     In a large pot, sauté the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic in oil over medium-high heat. I like to use grapeseed oil because it’s a little less oily.
2.     Add in the ground turkey or beef. Before the meat has completely cooked, add the tomato paste. Finish browning the meat completely.
3.     Stir in the remaining ingredients, except the beans and the cheese. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer on low heat for 30 minutes (or longer until the desired consistency is reached), stirring occasionally.
4.     Then, 20 minutes before serving, add the beans. You can’t add the beans in right away or they get mushy.
5.     Finish with sharp cheddar cheese. Any leftovers are easy to freeze.

Slow Cooker Cheesy Chicken Chili
by Amanda Dorich from Windber, PA
The headnote says, “This is no ordinary chicken chili! It is made in a slow cooker and is full of secret ingredients, but, most importantly, it is extremely cheesy. Everyone loves topping their chili with cheese, but putting the cheese into the actual chili is even more delicious and adds great texture and flavor.”
Tumblr media
photo: Amanda Dorich
2 chicken breasts
2 (25-ounce cans) diced tomatoes and green chiles (I use Rotel)
2 (25-ounce) cans corn
32 ounces chicken broth
1 packet dry ranch seasoning
8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Garnishes: extra cheese, Fritos® corn chips, hot sauce
1.     Beginning with the chicken at the very bottom, add all the ingredients to the slow cooker except for the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and toppings.
2.     Set the temperature to low and cook for 6–8 hours or high for 4 hours. Halfway through the cook time, add the cream cheese.
3.     When you’re ready to eat, shred the chicken and add the cheddar cheese. Give the cheese a few minutes to melt, then serve with your desired toppings.

Vegan Pumpkin Lentil Quinoa Chili
by Kaleigh McMordie from Abiline, TX
The headnote says, “This recipe uses canned pumpkin to lean into the fall feeling, while also thickening the chili without hours of simmering. I’m very much an omnivore and often feel let down by vegetarian chili recipes, so I set out to create a vegetarian chili that still has the stick-to-your-ribs feel of traditional beef chili. Using both quinoa and lentils lends the familiar texture of chili con carne while also adding plant protein that you may not always find in vegetarian versions.”
Tumblr media
Photo:  Kaleigh McMordie
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 small onion, diced
2 carrots, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup dry (uncooked) quinoa
1 cup dry (uncooked) lentils
1 (15-ounce can) low-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15-ounce can) low-sodium diced tomatoes
1 (4-ounce can) diced green chiles, mild or spicy
4 cups low-sodium vegetable stock
1 (15-ounce can) pure pumpkin purée
1 tablespoon chili powder
½ tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ tablespoon smoked paprika
Garnishes: cheese, sour cream, avocado, cilantro, sliced jalapeño
1.     In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat.
2.     Add the pepper, onion, carrots, and garlic. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring, until the veggies are slightly softened.
3.     Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
4.     Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Let simmer for 30–45 minutes, stirring about every 15 minutes.
5.     Serve the chili hot and garnish with any toppings you like, such as cheese, sour cream, avocado, cilantro, or sliced jalapeño.

Fulton-Inoue and undercard bouts from Yokohama Arena will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ in a special early-morning presentation
YOKOHAMA, Japan (March 6, 2023) — Naoya “Monster” Inoue conquered the bantamweight division. He’s now moving up in weight to capture the biggest fish at 122 pounds. Philadelphia’s WBC & WBO junior featherweight world champion, Stephen Fulton, will defend his titles against Japan’s pound-for-pound king Sunday, May 7, at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. The showdown pits two of the world’s top fighters, as Inoue aims to become only the fifth Asian boxer to win world titles in four weight classes. Fulton-Inoue and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ in a special early-morning presentation. Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs) is 19-0 with 17 knockouts in world title fights, a championship run that started in 2014 when he knocked out Adrian Hernandez for the WBC light flyweight world title. He went on to rule the junior bantamweight division with seven title defenses, including a second-round stoppage over Omar Narvaez. At bantamweight, Inoue became the division’s first undisputed champion in a half-century, stopping Emmanuel Rodriguez in two rounds to win the IBF strap, outlasting Nonito Donaire in the 2019 Fight of the Year to add the WBA belt, starching Donaire in the second round of their June 2022 rematch to snatch the WBC title, and stopping then-WBO champion Paul Butler in the 11th round. Inoue vacated all four bantamweight titles to move up four pounds for a shot at “Cool Boy Steph.” Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) turned pro in 2014 and defeated five undefeated prospects in his first 12 bouts. In January 2021, he defeated Angelo Leo to capture the WBO junior featherweight world title. Ten months later, he added the WBC belt to his collection with a majority decision over then-unbeaten Brandon Figueroa in one of the year’s most action-packed championship showdowns. Fulton defended both titles last June with a one-sided unanimous decision over former unified world champion Daniel Roman. Fulton will enter the Inoue bout, his first away from American soil, coming off an 11-month layoff. The 28-year-old Fulton, however, is the naturally bigger man, holding advantages in height and reach.

He’s the Bad Boy of Chess. But Did He Cheat?
“The day before he beat the greatest chess player in the world, Hans Niemann was a curly-haired 19-year-old American known only to serious fans of the game and mostly as an abrasive jerk. Everyone, it seems, has a story. Like that time in June, when he’d lost in the finals of a tournament in Prague, then stood in the ballroom of the hotel where the event was held and ranted against the city and the accommodations. ...”

SHIT SHOW
Idiomatic Meaning:  A description of an event or situation that takes an unexpected turn and is thrown into chaos; it’s another expression for spectacle or a complete mess; a total disaster.
Literal Meaning: A display of feces.
Usage: Informal, spoken American English. “Shit” is not considered a polite word.  It is often used for emphasis or shock value, especially in conjunction with another word, depending on the context.
Origin: Mid-20th Century, British and American English – The word “shit” itself is very old, going back to the early 14th century with roots in Old English and proto-Germanic languages. It can function as almost any part of speech. But in combination with the word “show” it isn’t even 100 years old. It appears to date only from 1976 as an English translation of a comment made by a member of a radical left German group, the “Red Army Faction”. One of their leaders, Monika Berberich, was on trial and insulted the judge, calling him a swine and referred to the entire trial as a “shit show”. The expression caught on and in recent months has been in the news a lot, referring to the events of January 6th in Washington D.C.
Why is this funny? In the photo, we see a very large wooden tray, containing  large discs of dried cow manure. The sign on the tray says, “World Championship Cow Chip Throw.” This is an authentic event taking place annually in Oklahoma. “Cow Chip” is just a polite way of saying cow shit or cow manure. The contestants are examining the chips and deciding on which ones they are going to throw. Clearly the cow chips are on display in the tray. But one of the contestants is complaining to the other how terribly disorganized the event is. As a result, he might say that the shit show was a real “shit show”.
Sample sentence: The insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building on June 6, 2021, was a total “shit show” from beginning to end.

Soon-to-Open Gil Hanse Designed ‘New Course’ Highlights Sustainability at Les Bordes
Viable, sensitive management three courses, estate at forefront of property’s commitment to nature
Set to be unveiled this summer, the New Course at Les Bordes is one of the golf industry’s most talked-about new design projects and is at the heart of a comprehensive new eco-strategy devised by the luxury estate to deliver improved sustainability on and off the golf course.
The exclusive French venue is working in association with the Golf Environment Organization (GEO) and following its ‘On Course’ environmental stewardship program to implement a 3-year plan that provides improved efficiency and a more sustainable performance across all areas of its estate.
As well as improving sustainability on its three courses – including the New Course, designed by acclaimed architect Gil Hanse and due to open on July 1 – Les Bordes is adopting a more enhanced approach to conservation across its other sectors, including its array of sports and lifestyle facilities, general estate services and management of hundreds of acres of natural woodland habitat in the Sologne Forest.
Lee Strutt, golf superintendent and estate manager at Les Bordes, said: “The sustainable management of all three courses and the wider estate is at the forefront of our long-term approach to the environment.
“We started implementing ways in which our operation can be run more sustainably to improve efficiency in 2020 and this will continue as we work through the GEO program. The New Course has been a main focus area for us to deliver better sustainability but there are many other environmental management practices that can be used across the wider estate, and we are aiming to introduce these over the next two years.”
A 90-minute drive south of Paris, Les Bordes Golf Club is a private members’ club and features 46 holes of golf – the 18-hole Old and New championship courses and the 10-hole Wild Piglet par-3 course.
The first golf course to be designed by Hanse in continental Europe, the New Course fits harmoniously into its surroundings. The fairways blend seamlessly into the natural vegetation and trees thanks to the care and attention implemented by Hanse and his team to preserve the habitat.
With a hard-wearing fescue grass species used for all fine-turf areas of the par-72 layout, the course design has created low maintenance areas, meaning maintenance costs have been significantly reduced with less irrigation, fertilizer and pesticides required.
The New Course has been planted with 250,000 new heathers to expand the catchment area for wildlife that benefits from the extended heather swathes. Most of the course furniture has been made using recycled material from the estate or material that has been locally sourced.
A new maintenance and water-management program has been implemented across the three courses to make fairways and greens firmer and faster, reducing irrigation levels and the electricity costs of the irrigation pumping station. The promotion of healthier turf has helped Les Bordes reduce the nutrient supplements needed by 40 percent.
The far-reaching benefits of Les Bordes’ upgraded eco-strategy can also be seen away from the golf courses, with the estate management team planning further improvements over the next two years to enhance the environment.
Among the measures being proposed is the development of a green-waste program – using grass cuttings and leaves to generate composted material for use around the estate including in the horse paddocks and the landscaping of the venue’s new residential properties – and increased woodland management to improve the visual appearance and screening of areas.
A review of both birds and animals’ natural habitats on the 1,400-acre estate, identifying where numbers could be increased to enrich the environment, is also set to take place alongside a drive to improve Les Bordes’ approach to recycling, waste and packaging. In addition, within the GEO program, there is a further incorporation of the clubhouse, hotel and service areas planned, including investigating the installation of light fittings that use less energy, with proximity sensors that automatically turn off light in rooms not used.
“These are early days for the estate in terms of improving our sustainable environment management but, with the changes that have been made on the golf courses, we have already made great progress,” said superintendent Strutt. “Everyone at Les Bordes has a long-term commitment to improving the estate by using sustainable practices that benefit the surroundings, are environmentally responsible and enhance the experience that we offer to our members and their guests.”
The July opening of Hanse’s New Course illuminates three years of investment at Les Bordes, developing a community where all family members have endless possibilities for fun and adventure. Completed on-site amenities include natural swimming lakes and pools, beaches, water sports, go-karting, fishing, equestrian, petting farm and biking and walking trails.
Future investment plans include an announced partnership with Six Senses for the transformation of the 19th century ‘Chateau Bel Air’ into a luxury hotel and spa, a village square with shops and restaurants and a variety of residential villas in various styles, as well as an equestrian centre, an organic farm, an art gallery and outdoor amphitheatre.

Major League Baseball is scheduled to hold its 91st All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta on July 13—the first time in 21 years the league’s annual showcase is to be played in that city. But pro baseball should extend Atlanta’s All-Star drought, and other sports should avoid scheduling their own signature events in Georgia, to show Republican state lawmakers that their latest efforts at voter suppression are unacceptable.
In the past, major sports organizations have forced other states to reconsider infringements on their citizens’ rights, and that kind of pressure is sorely needed in Georgia now. Last week, Georgia’s Republican governor, Brian Kemp, signed an elections bill that President Joe Biden has described as “Jim Crow in the 21st century.” The law imposes new voter-identification requirements for absentee ballots, limits the use of ballot drop boxes, and hands state officials more power over local elections. Even before the legislation passed, many voters of color in Georgia faced hours-long queues at the polls. Making those waits even more arduous, the new law bans giving food and water to people in line to vote.
It’s bad enough that the new law furthers the “big lie”—the baseless election-fraud claims that former President Donald Trump and his associates made before, during, and after the 2020 presidential election. The Georgia law also is an obvious attempt to intimidate and discourage voters of color, who helped clinch Biden’s narrow victory in November, elected two Democratic U.S. senators in January, and gave the Democratic Party full control of Congress.
In the days after the election bill passed, the Major League Baseball Players Association’s executive director, Tony Clark, indicated that players might support moving the yearly summer classic in response. “Players are very much aware” of the new law, Clark told The Boston Globe. “As it relates to the All-Star Game, we have not had a conversation with the league on that issue. If there is an opportunity to, we would look forward to having that conversation.” Meanwhile, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who is Black and Asian American, already has said that he would consider passing on the opportunity to manage the National League team in the All-Star Game because of what’s happening in Georgia.
Civil-rights activists have discouraged a comprehensive boycott of Georgia, because such an action could harm vulnerable families and undermine the Black economic base in the state—most notably in Atlanta, a city that has been ripe with opportunity for people of color. Bernice King, the daughter of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., tweeted: “Please stop the #BoycottGeorgia talk. That would hurt middle class workers and people grappling with poverty. And it would increase the harm of both racism and classism.”
But more targeted actions could help, and this is where athletes and sports leagues could be particularly influential. When major sports organizations have taken a stand for civil rights, they have been able to achieve substantive results. The NFL moved the 1993 Super Bowl out of Arizona because the state refused to enact a paid holiday honoring King. The NBA moved its 2017 All-Star Game out of North Carolina because of a state law demanding that transgender people use public bathrooms and locker rooms matching the sex on their birth certificate. For almost 15 years, the NCAA banned South Carolina from hosting championships because the Confederate flag flew on statehouse grounds.
In each case, those states backed down. Major sporting events are powerful motivators because they provide a significant economic boost and a badge of prestige for host cities. Conservative politicians who willingly ignore civil rights and other social-justice issues may listen when their stubbornness jeopardizes their standing in a sports-obsessed culture. Some fans might support Georgia’s new law now, but that support could be severely tested if the law winds up costing the state the All-Star game or other big events.
Could officials in Georgia be persuaded by such arguments? Keep in mind that Atlanta has become an extremely attractive destination for major sporting events because it has favorable weather, excellent transportation links to the rest of the country, and the headquarters of many potential corporate sponsors. If not for the global pandemic, the 2020 Final Four would have been played in Georgia’s capital city. The Super Bowl was held there in 2019, as was the College Football Playoff semifinal. The PGA Tour’s Masters Tournament is in Augusta every year.
By moving the All-Star Game to another city, Major League Baseball could show an overdue commitment to social progress. Despite how much pro baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson for breaking the sport’s color barrier in 1947, MLB doesn’t exactly have a reputation for taking a strong stance on racial issues. Last year, MLB was the last among the major professional sports leagues to speak out after George Floyd died under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer. When another wave of protests hit the sports world following the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, several MLB teams postponed games to acknowledge the racial reckoning sweeping the country. But the league brass had difficulty coming up with a unified response involving every team.
Overall, pro baseball has struggled to attract Black players and fans and address a long history of entrenched, systemic racism in the sport. Today, just 8 percent of MLB players are Black, down from 18 percent in 1986. At the start of last season, three teams—the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Kansas City Royals—didn’t have any Black players. Pro baseball has only two Black managers, one of whom is Roberts, who is just the second Black manager in MLB history to win a World Series.
Although baseball’s past record on race can’t be excused, becoming the first pro sport to cancel a major event in Georgia would give some meaning to MLB’s otherwise empty statement last June pledging to “be better” on racial issues. Baseball can be the first to lead the way with a targeted boycott, but every league should now consider Georgia off-limits for major sporting events. Those who undermine democracy shouldn’t be rewarded for their pernicious efforts to disenfranchise people of color.

Tamio "Tommy" Kono (June 27, 1930 – April 24, 2016) was a Japanese American weightlifter in the 1950s and 1960s. Kono set world records in four different weight classes lightweight (149 pounds or 67.5 kilograms), middleweight (165 lb or 75 kg), light-heavyweight (182 lb or 82.5 kg) and middle-heavyweight (198 lb or 90 kg).
Kono was born in Sacramento, California, on June 27, 1930. His family was of Japanese descent and were interned at Tule Lake internment camp in 1942 during World War II. Sickly as a child, the desert air helped Kono's asthma. It was during the relocation that Kono was introduced to weightlifting by neighbors including Noboru "Dave" Shimoda, a member of the Tule Lake weightlifting and bodybuilding club and brother of actor Yuki Shimoda and his friends, Gotoh, Toda and Bob Nakanishi. After 3½ years they were released and Kono finished Sacramento High School. He later worked for the California Department of Motor Vehicles and attended Sacramento Junior College.
Kono was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 but was kept home from the Korean War after officials learned of his Olympic potential.
Kono was a gold medalist at both the 1952 Summer Olympics and 1956 Summer Olympics, and a silver medalist at the 1960 Summer Olympics under coach Bob Hoffman. Kono won the World Weightlifting Championships six consecutive times from 1953 to 1959 and was a three-time Pan American Games champion; in 1955, 1959, and 1963. A knee injury prevented him from qualifying for the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the following year he retired from the sport. He set a total of 26 world records and seven Olympic records, making him the most accomplished U.S. male weightlifter to date.
Kono was also a successful bodybuilder, winning the Fédération Internationale Haltérophile et Culturiste Mr. Universe titles in 1954, 1955, 1957 and 1961. After his retirement he turned to coaching, taking on the Mexican 1968 Summer Olympics and West German 1972 Summer Olympics weightlifting teams before becoming head coach of the United States' Olympic weightlifting team at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
During his weightlifting career in the 1960s, he developed a pair of bands to support knees during training. These eventually extended to the elbows and became standard weightlifting equipment.[9] While he was coaching in West Germany during the 1970s, his correspondence with Adidas led to the firm's development of low cut weightlifting shoes.
Along with his weightlifting and bodybuilding titles, Kono was an eight-time Amateur Athletic Union James E. Sullivan Award finalist, an award given annually to the top American amateur athlete. He was also one of the first members of the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame in 1978. In 1990, Kono received the Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen Highest Achievement Award and was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. He was elected to the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2005, the International Weightlifting Federation named Kono the "Lifter of the Century."
Kono appeared in Universal Newsreel volume 32, number 63, August 6, 1959. He is depicted as part of a mural located at 37 West Philadelphia Street in York, Pennsylvania. This mural was finished in 2000.
Kono was depicted in a Google Doodle marking the anniversary of his birth in 2021.
Kono died on April 24, 2016 in Honolulu, Hawaii from complications of liver disease, aged 85. Survivors included his wife of 53 years, the former Florence Rodrigues of Honolulu, three children, and three grandchildren.
