96 page Caitlin Clark ESPN special... 🙃
Even if you want to make Clark the star, is it really necessary to give her all 96 pages?
What if Clark had 36 pages? Then we could give the other 60 pages to other female basketball stars under 25 years old. Why not give a page to Dyaisha Fair? And let's check on Brink and Rickea and Cardoso. Let's check on Flaujae and Juju and Hannah and Paige. Let's also check on the 2021, 2022, and 2023 rookie classes. What are they up to? Go talk to Mic Onyenwere and Rhyne Howard and Nalyssa Smith and Aliyah Boston and Diamond Miller. Kristen Bell and Em Engstler just won AU medals. Show that. Talk to the young international Olympians that will be in Paris like Ezi and Aaliyah Edwards. Show the young players who spent their winters playing for glamorous cities in Europe and Australia. Give me a photoshoot of Dorka in Italy. I want a nice picture and nice blurb for every under-25 pro that's been playing good minutes in the WNBA.
If ESPN wants to promote the youth wave as the present and future of the game, that's great. But 96 pages on one player is not how you do that.

Renee Montgomery Shots
Renee Montgomery is a former professional basketball player with an extensive and incredibly impressive rap sheet both on and off the court. Hailing from South Charleston High School in West Virginia where she averaged 22.5 points per game, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals while leading her school to the WV Class AAA Final as a senior in high school, Montgomery would go on to play for the iconic UCONN Women's basketball team from 2005 to 2009, starting 35 of their 37 games her freshman year, all 36 of their games as a sophomore, as well as be named Big East Freshman of the Year in 2006. That year she collected ppg in the double digits in 29 games that included FOUR 20+ point performances. In 2008, she passed the 1,000 point mark in a W against North Carolina. Montgomery would win a championship with UCONN her senior year, leading them to an UNDEFEATED 39-0 season. She would set *numerous* UCONN records including No. 1 in games played at 150, No. 3 in Assists at 632, No. 4 in 3-point FG's at 254, No. 5 in Steals at 266, and No. 9 in FT's at 330.
Drafted into the WNBA the 4th overall first-round pick to the Minnesota Lynx, she would be traded to Suns, then to Seattle, only to be traded back to Lynx where she would help the team win their fourth championship in seven seasons. She was then traded to Atlanta, where she literally broke the league record for most 3 pointers in half and the most 3 pointers made in a season for the franchise.
The scope of her 11-year basketball career reaches far beyond the WNBA, however, as she also has a lengthy history playing overseas in Israel, Australia, and Russia to name a few. She is a 2x WNBA champion (2015 and 2017), 2012 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, and 2011 All-Star. She also received the Honda Sports Award for basketball in '09.
In 2020, Montgomery would announce an absence from the season due to systemic racism and the burgeoning pandemic. She would renounce her retirement in 2021, and would acquire the FCF Beasts that same year.
Let's not forget she also played USA Basketball!
NOTE: Montgomery is fun asf to watch. From her handles to her finishing to her timing and her passing and play execution — her entire game, especially during her days at UCONN and the championship games with the Lynx, are entertainment at its finest. Personally, I'm a little young to have watched the games in real-time, but boy are those fun games to tune into and recount. For whatever reason when it comes to hoops, I adore the nifty point guard/shooting guard types — high scoring, exciting dashes to the rim, the steals lol, — it's all great bidness to me, stats be damned.

Dawn Staley, the esteemed head coach of the South Carolina Gamecock's women's basketball team, has left an indelible mark on the sport. Her journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in the league is nothing short of inspiring. Let's take a closer look at her childhood years, high school experiences, how she entered the league, and her remarkable career.
Childhood Years Born on May 4, 1970, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dawn Staley grew up in a challenging environment. Raised by her mother and grandmother in North Philadelphia's Raymond Rosen housing project - a neighborhood known for its economic hardships, Staley faced adversity from an early age. However, it was during these formative years that she developed resilience and determination that would shape her future success.
High School Years Staley attended Dobbins Technical High School where she quickly made a name for herself as an exceptional athlete. Excelling not only in basketball but also track and field and tennis, she showcased versatility and raw talent across multiple sports. As a standout point guard on the basketball court with unmatched skills and leadership qualities, Staley caught the attention of college recruiters nationwide.
Entering the League After graduating from high school in 1988 as one of Pennsylvania's most highly recruited players ever seen at that time. Dawn Staley faced numerous offers from top-tier universities across America. Ultimately choosing to attend the University of Virginia under legendary Coach Debbie Ryan was a physical decision that would set her on course for greatness.
Career in College Basketball During her time at Virginia (1998-1992), Staley became one of college basketball's most electrifying players. She led her team to three Final Four appearances (1990-1992) while earning All-American honors each year - an impressive feat indeed! Known for her exceptional ball-handling skills and court vision, Staley's ability to control the game and make her teammates better was unparalleled. Her leadership qualities were also recognized when she was named ACC Female Athlete of the Year in 1991 and 1992.
Professional Career Following her illustrious college career, Staley transitioned into professional basketball. In 1996, she joined the American Basketball League (ABL) as a member of the Richmond Rage. Her impact on the court continued to shine as she earned All-Star selections and led her team to an ABL Championship in 1997.
When the ABL folded in late 1998, Staley seamlessly transitioned to the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was selected with the ninth overall pick by the Charlotte Sting in its inaugural draft. Throughout her WNBA career, which spanned from 1999-2006, Staley played for both Charlotte and Houston Comets. Known for her tenacity on defense and play-making abilities on offense, she left an indelible mark on each team she represented.
Coaching Career After retiring as a player in 2006, Dawn Staley embarked on a new chapter of her basketball journey, coaching. She began as an assistant coach at Temple University before taking over as head coach at South Carolina in April 2008. Under her guidance, South Carolina has experienced unprecedented success. Staley has transformed South Carolina into a powerhouse program that consistently competes at the highest level. The Gamecocks have won multiple Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular season championships and SEC Tournament titles under her leadership. Most notably, Staley guided South Carolina to their first-ever NCAA National Championship victory in women's basketball during the historic season of 2016-2017.
Beyond coaching at South Carolina, Dawn Staley has also made significant contributions internationally by serving as head coach for Team USA Women's Basketball since March 2017. Under her guidance, Team USA won gold medals at the 2018 FIBA World Cup and the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Dawn Staley's journey from a challenging childhood to becoming a revered figure in women's basketball is a testament to her unwavering determination, resilience, and exceptional skills. As she continues to inspire both on and off the court, Staley remains an influential force in shaping the future of women's basketball for generations to come.

WNBA Finals: The Australian and WNBL connections run deep
Tipping off tomorrow, Las Vegas and New York face off in the WNBA Finals, and there's plenty of Australian and WNBL storylines to follow.
HAYLEY WILDES
The WNBA Finals get underway tomorrow morning with Game 1 tipping off at 6am AEDT and after an incredible season, it all comes down to the two preseason favourites battling it out in what is sure to be a Finals to remember.
Las Vegas will be aiming to make it back-to-back championships, while New York will be hoping to claim the franchise’s maiden championship. 2022 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson and 2023 WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart headline both teams, while the likes of Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones will have a huge say in the outcome of the series.
Speaking of those that will have a big impact in the championship decider, there are a myriad of connections to Australia and the WNBL, with players with WNBL experience set to light up the Finals and a very familiar head coach.
There are three players on each team who have played in the WNBL, and of course Opals head coach Sandy Brondello is running the show in New York. This demonstrates the standing and importance of Australian basketball in the best league in the world.
For New York, Betnijah Laney, Kayla Thornton and Jocelyn Willoughby have all had stops in the WNBL, while Las Vegas’ Jackie Young and Kierstan Bell have suited up in the WNBL, and Opals superstar Cayla George is also on the squad.
Laney and Young in particular have taken their respective careers to new heights after stints in the WNBL and will be among the most important players in the series.
Laney was a revelation for the Perth Lynx in 2015/16, alongside the likes of Sami Whitcomb and Tessa Lavey. That squad made it all the way to the Grand Final series and although they ultimately lost to the Townsville Fire, there’s no doubt it was a special season for the Lynx. Laney led the team in rebounds (7.7 per game) and assists (3.8), while also adding 14.7 points per game (second to Whitcomb at 19.2).
Her toughness and work ethic shone through back then and she returned to the league in season 2017/18 with the Bendigo Spirit, creating a dominant duo with Kelsey Griffin. That season wasn’t to be for Bendigo, with Griffin’s season ending after just six games due to a hip injury, but Laney battled until the end, averaging 14.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
After struggling to find her groove in the WNBA, everything changed in 2020 with the Atlanta Dream when she averaged 17.2 points per game, up from 5.6 the previous season. She won the Most Improved Player Award and was named to the All-Defensive Team that season.
Now she is a force for the star-studded Liberty team. As well as being a defensive headache, Laney is just super efficient on the offensive end, making her the perfect fit alongside the likes of Stewart, Jones, Ionescu and Vandersloot. This season she has averaged 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists on 49.9% shooting from the field and 39.2% from three.
Young was on the rise prior to coming to Perth for season 2021/22, but really announced herself as one of the best players in the WNBA after her summer with the Lynx. Young spent one season with Perth, in a loaded squad that included college teammate Marina Mabrey, Whitcomb, Darcee Garbin and Lauren Scherf.
Although the Lynx lost to the Boomers in the Grand Final, Young was massive. Despite a slowish start to the season, she quickly found her groove and became deadly on both ends of the court. After averaging 17.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for Perth, Young returned to Las Vegas a different player.
Not known for her three-point shooting in pervious seasons, Young showcased her improvement over the off-season and incredibly became one of the WNBA’s best three-point shooters, finishing third in the league for three-point percentage in 2022. Young’s newfound three-point shooting was integral in the Aces run to the Championship and she was named an All-Star for the first time in her career, while also taking out the WNBA’s Most Improved Player Award.
This season, Young has taken her game to a new level, and much like Laney, it’s all about efficiency and finding a role within a team full of stars. Named an All-Star again, Young is just an assassin on offence, averaging a career-high 17.6 points per game on otherworldly shooting splits of 52.3% from the field, 44.9% from three and 86.7% from the line.
Kayla Thornton, Jocelyn Willoughby and Kierstan Bell all played in the WNBL last season, and Willoughby will be back in the league this summer.
Thornton starred for Southside last season, helping lead the squad to an unlikely Finals appearance after a season filled with injuries. She was everything the Flyers could’ve hoped for in an import and played both side of the ball extremely well.
Leading the team in points (15.7 per game) and rebounds (6.8), Thornton announced herself on opening night with 21 points and 8 rebounds, and never looked back.
While playing for Southside earlier this year, Thornton was traded from Dallas to New York as part of the deal that landed former WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones in New York (and saw Bec Allen head in Connecticut). Although her minutes are down compared to what she playing in Dallas, her importance to New York cannot be underestimated. She’s a star in her role and brings it every game on both ends of the floor.
She does all the little things well and Brondello knows she can rely on Thornton whenever she calls her number.
In a rocky season for the Flames last season, Willoughby just kept working. A coaching and point guard change mid-season threw Sydney into chaos, but Willoughby – as well as Keely Froling and Tiana Mangakahia – did all they could to remain competitive.
Willoughby averaged 15.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, and will suit up for Adelaide this coming season alongside fellow import and WNBA player Brianna Turner. Willoughby is played sparingly off the bench by Brondello and appeared in 29 games in the regular season.
Bell only played nine games for the Lightning last season before returning to the States. She showed flashes of what Adelaide would’ve been hoping for from her (she did average 14.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game), but it was shortlived. Back with Las Vegas in her second season of WNBA, Bell hasn’t been able to lock down totally consistent rotation minutes, but for a second-year player on a loaded squad such as the Aces, she’s done well to fight for minutes. She’s shown enough potential to be an option off the bench for Becky Hammon in certain match-ups and is only improving.
Cayla George has done it all in Australian basketball – won WNBL championships, a WNBL MVP, represented the Opals on countless occasions, highlighted by Olympic and World Cup campaigns – and now she is trying to add a WNBA championship to her resume.
George hasn’t seen consistent court time for the Aces this season. She has struggled with her long-range shooting (23.4% shooting from deep), which is vital to her game considering over 60% of her shots this season have been from beyond the arc. With that being said, she’s the type of player that has remained ready and is very clearly a positive personality to have on your bench.
Speaking of positives on the bench, Sandy Brondello has done a fantastic job balancing the many mouths to feed on a Liberty squad boasting ridiculous star power. She will be aiming for her second WNBA championship, after leading Phoenix to the 2014 title, with fellow Aussies Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips members of that squad.
Brondello has long been known as a defensive-minded coach and while the Liberty owned the third best defensive-rating this season (101), their offence was even stronger, finishing second with an offensive rating of 111.8.
Incredibly, as per ESPN, Brondello and Becky Hammon facing off will mark the first time in WNBA history that two former WNBA players will meet as head coaches in the Finals.
This truly is a meeting of the juggernauts and all I can say is, sit back and enjoy!
WNBA Finals schedule

PHOENIX -- Brittney Griner strolled down the sideline about 1 1/2 hours before the Phoenix Mercury played Friday night, giving hugs and high-fiving her teammates, coaches and opposing players.
Then it was a little stretching, a little shooting and a little agility work to prepare for a basketball game.
Just like old times.
“I'm grateful to be here, that's for sure,” Griner said. “I'm not going to take a day for granted."
Griner returned to game action for the first time since a nearly 10-month detainment in Russia on drug-related charges ended with a prisoner swap in December. The seven-time All-Star, who missed the entire 2022 season because of the detainment, finished with 10 points and three rebounds in a WNBA preseason game against the Los Angeles Sparks.
The 6-foot-9 Griner looked good, especially considering the long layoff, casually throwing down a one-handed dunk during warmups. She stood with her teammates while the national anthem was played and received a loud ovation from the home crowd when she was introduced before tipoff.
“Hearing the national anthem, it definitely hit different,” Griner said. “It's like when you go for the Olympics, you're sitting there, about to get gold put on your neck, the flags are going up and the anthem is playing, it just hits different.
"Being here today ... it means a lot.”
Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard said the anthem and introductions were emotional for the entire team.
“We looked at each other and we just had chills,” Nygaard said. “We were here last year for all of it. I'm getting emotional about it now. Just to see her back out there — it's an absolute miracle. It was amazing. It's giving me chills again.”
Once the game started, the 32-year-old Griner immediately went to work, scoring on a turnaround jumper early in the first quarter. A few minutes later, she was fouled on another turnaround and sank both free throws.
She even had a cameo with the medical staff in the third quarter. Teammate Sophie Cunningham went down with a knee injury and Griner helped carry her off the court so she didn't have to put weight on her leg.
“When one of us goes down, we're always right there,” Griner said. “That's one thing about this team — we're always there for each other. We've got each others' backs, big time.”
Griner’s return to the Mercury rekindles hope the franchise can make another run to the WNBA Finals. The former Baylor star helped the franchise win its third title in 2014 and has averaged 17.7 points and 7.6 rebounds during her nine-year career. She was runner-up for Most Valuable Player in 2021, when the Mercury also played in the Finals but lost to the Chicago Sky.
Griner said she was more rusty on the court than expected. But given the trials and emotions of the past 18 months, it was a pretty good night.
“Not where I want it to be, but on the right track,” Griner said. “We're making the right moves.”
Phoenix opens the regular season in Los Angeles next Friday.

I think I’ve seen you answer this before so hopefully you don’t mind- I’d love to start following the WNBA this season, do you have any recommendations for how to catch up and follow what’s going on? I know the game pretty well, and I know the big players and stuff, but I’d love to be more invested this year.
Well first I'll plug my side blog lol
Hmm... if you want to get more into it, pick a team or two to follow. I follow the Mercury and Storm pretty closely and I like to keep an eye on the Liberty. You can watch all the games on league pass and some games are uploaded on youtube.
But right now, it's the off-season. So there's college basketball and overseas basketball.
For news, there's no women's basketball reporter that I actually like. I just tolerate some of them better than others. Alexa Phillippou is fine I guess. And there's some podcasts that are fun. Tea with A & Phee is awesome but they haven't made any episodes since 2021. Erica McCall has a good podcast that she updates semi-regularly.
There just isn't enough social media and blogs doing women's basketball stuff. You kind of just have to follow all the players at once 😅 If you follow them all on instagram and check their insta stories, you see some fun stuff. Like yeah follow the stars. But also bench players and role players post a lot of hilarious shit. I've seen some crazy things in insta stories lol
And sometimes players will post something spicy on twitter too lol. So here's a twitter list of everyone who uses twitter. It's usually the more obnoxious players who tweet a lot. But the game wouldn't be the same without them lmfao.
There's a few shy or private players who don't use social media. And Diana has kind of a Ted Kaczynski thing going on. But otherwise, the players do a better job covering their own sport than the media does. It shouldn't be like that and they shouldn't have to do that. But it is what it is

What’s next for women’s basketball after this year’s March Madness April 10,2024
Millions of people have watched the NCAA women’s basketball tournament over the past few weeks, and the last three rounds of the tournament have sold out and set viewership records, especially games involving the Iowa Hawkeyes and their star point guard Caitlin Clark.
Iowa faced off against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday, and South Carolina pulled ahead in the second half to win it all, 87-75.
We talk about how the women’s March Madness tournament got so big this year and the role Clark and other star players like Angel Reese of LSU played in turning out an unprecedented audience. What’s next for women’s basketball at the collegiate and professional levels after this year’s burst of enthusiasm and viewership?

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are headed to the WNBA. Are they also destined for a pay cut? April 4, 2024
" Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have both decided to forgo their final year of college eligibility and enter the WNBA Draft, though there aren’t multimillion dollar WNBA rookie contracts awaiting them.
Clark, Iowa’s record-setting guard, is expected to be the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever, and rival from LSU should be selected later in the first round. The base salary for the first pick in the WNBA draft is $76,000, unlike the millions in rookie contracts for their NBA brethren.
Clark and Reese became millionaires during their college careers, and despite the WNBA salary range, going pro doesn’t doesn’t mean the collegiate standouts will take a dramatic pay cut — or any pay cut for that matter.
The pair had the top two name, image and likeness (NIL) valuations for women’s basketball players and those deals are expected to carry over into their pro careers."

Starting with USC’s JuJu Watkins, women’s college hoops remains in good hands APRIL 10,2024
The NCAA didn’t improve accommodations or extend March Madness branding for the women’s tournament until glaring discrepancies were uncovered in August 2021.
Now the women are kicking the men’s ass in popularity and TV ratings.
Guys still won at the bank ($873 million to $6.5 million in TV rights), but the NCAA knows it must sweeten the deal for women’s teams. Unlike their counterparts in the men’s tournament, women’s teams get nothing, a shameful arrangement. “You look at what the 68 (men’s) teams are going to divide up, I think I saw $170 million between the 68 teams,” South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said Saturday during a news conference. “When you start bringing in revenue like that, it will move your campus in a different direction when it comes to women. So we’ve got to fight for that.”
"They certainly don’t have to fight for attention anymore. "

Stephen Curry, Ionescu tuloy ang shootout sa NBA All-Star Weekend
Tumblr media
“Sky is the limit for her and what she can do on the court in terms of her impact in the game but off the court as well,” ani Curry sa katunggali.
Reserves sina Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard at Karl-Anthony Towns.
Captain ng East si Giannis Antetokounmpo, kasama niyang starters sina Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum at Joel Embiid (injured). Pinili ng coaches na reserves sina Bam Adebayo, Paolo Banchero, Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Maxey, Donovan Mitchell at Julius Randle (injured).
Hinugot ni commissioner Adam Silver sina Trae Young at Scottie Barnes bilang pamalit kina Embiid (left knee surgery) at Randle (dislocated shoulder).

A highlight from Allisha's glittering career in 2023: How she had became an all star for the very first time in her WNBA.
To Dallas Wings: You need to do better & stop with "Get and hog all the draft picks-waive rookie/ draft pick player-add more rookies and draft pick players-waive- repeat this type of vicious; abusive and exhausting" type of vicious cycle you have. ✋ 🙅🏽‍♀️
Plus since Allisha had been feeling hurt from how you not only not prioritize Allisha as a franchise player for the Dallas Wings but what is worse is that you let Vicky Johnson get away with coaching for two years as a 'Former' head coach after she said something ill-fated and hurtful about how Lish didn't play well defensively and yet having to say she plays poorly during the game on Las Vegas Aces vs Dallas Wings back in June 2021 additionally having to prioritize a player who shown nothing but very bad and unacceptable behaviors which I "Highly" considered to be childish; immature and impractically awfully and truthfully unacceptable about how she had slammed the ball on the third game on Wings vs Aces back in 2021 followed by the slam on a half full water bottle to create a wet and a slippery surface on the basketball court additionally to add the insult into the wound; Arike did also kick a panel board on the sideline after a failed free throw shot plus **kicking the basketball into a stand in addition to not knowing there may be countless fans sitting at the area where sadly *she (*Arike) kicked the ball into that particular stand followed by an immediate ejection on a home game vs Seattle Storm(?). (**I don't know as I couldn't re call the game dejectedly)
And honestly, I do really think Allisha Gray deserves better in the Dallas Wings but too little too late unfortunately.
Plus I love the reunion between Satou and Lish in the 'All star' skill game where she had to play with Cheyenne and Satou have to play with Arike. (Again, I have nothing against either Cheyenne Parker or Arike but still . . . no 'true' offense to everybody in general but I am neither a 'huge' fan of Cheyenne Parker nor I am a fan of Arike as I do find her behavior extremely questionable and in some cases; truthfully and impractically childish and unacceptable: so 'No 'true' offense to any Arike fans out there but I didn't like Arike at all as she is one of my least favorite player in my very own opinion; sorry.)
Again, no "True" offense to everybody who is reading this post especially if you a "Die hard" Dallas Wings fan; Atlanta Dream fan or perhaps a fan whom you support Lish from her University of South Carolina days; sorry.
Also sorry again if the images are pretty blurry. (There is nothing I can do about that so sorry about that though.)
⚠️ Disclaimer: I don't own the images and none of them are mine. Also captions are entirely based and reflected on my own personal point views.
📷 Credits goes to YT, WNBA and Atlanta Dream (Via YT) for all of the respective images on Allisha's first time experience as an all star player in her WNBA Career.

As the seconds ticked down toward halftime in Diana Taurasi’s first professional basketball game, the guard threw up a shot that would serve as a preamble for the ensuing 19 years. Fifty feet from the basket, Taurasi launched a half-court heave. Her attempt banked in for three of her 22 points on May 20, 2004. “It’s not hype — Taurasi is the real deal,” The Arizona Republic headline read the next day.
The Real Deal would later be given another nickname: In 2021, she was voted, by fans, as the WNBA’s GOAT. For nearly two decades, Taurasi has stuffed stat sheets and frustrated defenses. The 41-year-old is already the league’s all-time scoring leader, having passed Tina Thompson in 2017. Later this week, she likely will log another major milestone by recording her 10,000th point. Taurasi, who is averaging 15.3 points per game and returned to action Sunday after missing three games with an injury, is 47 points away. No other player currently competing in the league is within 3,000 points of her. “She’s definitely one of those generational talents that I don’t think (there will) ever be another one,” says Ticha Penicheiro, a four-time WNBA All-Star who played against Taurasi in her league debut.
To mark the occasion, The Athletic talked to 10 opponents who guarded Taurasi. Some, like Penicheiro, faced off against her during key regular-season moments in her career. Others guarded her in practice or went from on-court foes to roaming the same sideline as her. Consider this an anthology of Taurasi tales. Ten stories for 10,000 points.

Puma x Breanna Stewart Stewie 1
Tumblr media
PUMA along with WNBA MVP and champion and Olympic gold medalist Breanna “Stewie” Stewart announced the upcoming Stewie 1, the first new women’s signature basketball sneaker in over a decade.
The Stewie 1 embodies Breanna’s fierce-yet-humble nature with its Quiet Fire colorway—a striking combination of neon yellow and contrasting black. The aggressive flame molding morphs into the calming ripples of water in the midsole showcasing the duality of Stewie’s game and personality, while a North Star-inspired upper captures the Forward’s brilliant talent and is a nod to her high school team.
Stewie’s signature sneaker is the latest in PUMA’s commitment to growing equality for women athletes. The brand officially launched a Women’s Hoops category in 2021 with iconic Creative Director June Ambrose and they’re continuing their progress through the division. In launching the Stewie 1, Breanna is taking the next step in inspiring a generation of young athletes to believe that a signature shoe is a possibility, no matter who you are or where you are from.
"Working with PUMA to craft the first women’s signature basketball sneaker in the last 12 years was an honor,” said Breanna Stewart. “I hope that this is the first in a legacy of signature sneakers to come for women athletes across all sports and serves as inspiration for all young people that this, along with any achievement, is possible.”
The Stewie 1 provides multi-zoned monomesh layers for targeted support, breathability and comfort along with NITRO Foam technology for superior responsiveness and cushioning while remaining lightweight, and a Molded Heel Counter for additional stability and lockdown marked with scars to represent Stewie’s two Achilles surgeries.
“Throughout her career, Breanna has always been a champion for athletes both on and off the court,” said Adam Petrick Chief Brand Officer at PUMA. “A signature sneaker was long overdue, and our team at PUMA has been proud to work with her to see this come to life. Just as importantly, we are excited to see athletes of all ages, backgrounds and genders wearing The Stewie 1 as a reminder that equal representation and access is a must in sports.”
An apparel pack consisting of nine items will also launch in tandem with the Stewie 1, inclusive of the Stewie Packable Jacket, Stewie Packable Snap Pant, Stewie Sports Bra, Stewie Shorts, Stewie Crewneck, Stewie Legging, Stewie Graphic Tee, AOP Graphic Tee, and Stewie Jersey. Stewie’s first product collaboration with PUMA – an apparel capsule titled Overdue – was unveiled in October 2021 as a teaser for what’s to come. The performance packed kick is unmatched on all fronts. Retailing for $35-$140, the Stewie 1 and accompanying apparel will be available this fall in North America on PUMA.com, at the PUMA NYC Flagship store and select retailers.
The PUMA Hoops roster includes WNBA athletes Skylar Diggins-Smith, Jackie Young, Katie Lou Samuelson and NaLyssa Smith.
