The second of the four designs for my 2022 Pride line: a portrait of Holy Antinoos, the deified lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. More myth than fact remains of either his life or his death, but the record is clear that he died while travelling with Hadrian in Egypt and that emperor had him deified, established a hero cult in his name, and named a city after him. The cult never became a major religion, but it was widespread and reasonably popular, and Antinoos became both a religious and literary icon of sexual love between men. I based this image of Antinoos on a Roman statue in the Antinous Mondragone style from the 2nd century CE, reframed in imitation of an ancient coin.

* Made of solid .925 sterling silver or shibuichi (an art metal alloy made of 3:1 copper:silver), yellow brass, or bronze.

* Available as a coin, with an upeye for use as a pendant, or with three jump rings for use in a rosary-style necklace.

Each piece is hand-made to order in my home studio, with unique variations and defects as a result of the fabrication and casting process.

My #1 post of 2022

my body has been wracked with grief since the shooting at Club Q on Trans Day of Remembrance, exactly 42 years after the shooting in Greenwich at multiple gay bars. That it happened in the same week a gay bar in nyc has had a brick thrown through their window 3 times. for all the moments we don’t make the news for.

i don’t have anything transformative to say and i’m beyond empty. yet, i still find myself dreaming through death and massacre and criminalization,

of a world where we live long lives

of a world i get to meet you

of a world we kiss our lovers and friends not worrying it’ll be the last

of a world where you get home safe, a world where you got home safe.

i’m waiting for your “got home safe” text. i’m waiting to hear the door unlock and to know you survived.

i feel desperate to keep going, not out of spite but dedication. for every moment taken away from us i will carry you with me. and if an early grave comes for me we’ll still find a way forward.

it wasn’t your time and you’re still gone. rest in peace is a cheap salve but i hope you find it; rest and peace.

every dc pride special has one story that is devoted to telling people that rioting is no longer necessary and we should all just relax and put our fists down because we do have rights now and Think Of The Children and what have you. and two out of three times they've used characters who are explicitly either extremely radical or just, in general, very violent people to be the mouthpiece of moderatism. and while yes this is unfortunately just a side effect of corporate pride in general because ultimately these are always less shows of support and more cash grabs (that at least thankfully support actually lgbt creative teams), one thing that has rubbed me the wrong way for two years in a row is how these stories get put in specials with. uhhh. deeply touching personal narratives about people's real, actual lives.

last year it was the whole "pride is a paaarty now it's all fineeee now" story in comparison with the late great kevin conroy's deeply touching autobiographical story, "finding batman," which is broadly about the cultural impact of homophobic violence in many forms and the way it nearly crushed him. it felt extremely bizarre to have a story where a character tells someone "oh pride hasn't been a Violent Dangerous Riot that Needs To Be Stomped Out for decades so it's all good :3" next to a personal narrative about kicking and screaming in forced silence for survival. and then this year you have the world's most baffling lineup of midnighter, apollo, and alan scott of all people being like "maybe violence against bigots Is bad" next to six people sharing stories about how a recently deceased transgender icon made their own lives better.

it doesn't feel nearly as bad as 2022's did because none of the celebration of pollack's life explicitly discuss homophobic and transphobic bigotry and violence (beyond joe corallo mentioning her being forgiving and encouraging of members of the uk gay liberation front who made amends for their past transphobia and became advocates for transgender rights)--in my opinion, last year's juxtaposition was much more inappropriate and borderline insulting. but when half the writers, artists, and colorists in your "celebration of dc pride" get violent death threats near-constantly to turn around and release a story about how actually while we don't have to get along with or even respect them fighting back would make us just as bad... uh oh! looks like a corporation endorsed letting their employees endure discrimination and harassment both on and off the job!

again. you can't expect anything different from large corporate pride events, and i do appreciate that stories and personal experiences that otherwise might not have been told were given a chance to shine here, but every time it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Limboverse

hello tumblr!

we've mentioned limboverse in our posts before, but we've never really explained what it is. so, here's an in-depth history and explanation of this roleplay/au!

long post incoming...

(let me set the scene. it's october, 2022.)

limboverse started as a ride the cyclone roleplay, (that I MADE (in a caffeine induced energy burst) -🌺) which takes place several years after the canon plot (the choir is roughly 20-21). we added fankids from alternate universes into it, as well-- savannah and donnie (spacedolls), amelie (nischa), and river (blackrose)

...everything started going downhill when dhar mann was introduced (11-10-22). it started off as a joke but soon enough, he was integral to the lore (being presumably a god and ricky's lover.) after dhar mann, we started adding other musical characters. spring awakening and falsettos were the first non-rtc characters.

for the next week or so it was extremely chaotic, with real people being brought in as jokes, leading to the creation of the "normal roleplay" channel. (the retired roleplay channel is still used for shitposting.) it was around here that non-musical characters were introduced in a serious manner.

as more characters were brought in, the setting was brought into question. it was impossible for all of these different universes to intersect naturally, so we made it fit. enter: limbo. (first mentioned: 11-14-22. began being used for worldbuilding around 12-09-22.)

and now for the actual explanation of what limbo is and how it applies to the roleplay!

-limbo is a ghost town with no way out. people (the characters) wake up in the surrounding forest and wander in. there are 3 main streets that have houses and a row of shops.

-it regenerates food and resources weekly. despite this, there is only one working fridge. the Limbo Fridge is located at the town center and is used as a landmark. there is an 82-year-old package of edamame in the fridge that has bad side effects when eaten-- also, it respawns/grows when removed. the victims of the edamame claim to have a psychic connection to it post-food poisoning.

-the actual roleplay portion of it takes place within the "limbo neighborhood watch" group chat. everyone who wakes up in limbo automatically has a phone with this installed. dms also exist for characters who came from the same universe-- groundhog day dms, falsettos dms, omori dms, etc.

-buildings within limbo: the store, mendel's psychiatrist's office/dispensary, the cafe, the marriage hall, and the pharmacy

-there is a giant groundhog.

and now, for the most used/iconic characters of limbo!

-MENDEL WEISENBACHFELD (falsettos). i guess you could say he's the antagonist of limbo? he's violently homophobic due to being a repressed bisexual. played by buddy.

-PHIL CONNORS (groundhog day). he is in constant anguish. married to rita. played by mart.

-RITA HANSON (groundhog day). also in constant anguish but more organised about it. played by theora.

-KEVIN PRICE (the book of mormon). got bullied and now he's not an asshole anymore. works at the cafe as a barista. his only friends are rita and 2 teenage girls. played by me (annie)!

-MARVIN (falsettos). hes a little hater. he's also in looooooove. played by sunny.

-WHIZZER (falsettos). sarcastic ass. he has a talking cat named colonel pumpkin. played by me, pt 2.

-ALL OF THE RTC CHARACTERS AND FANKIDS (will be expanded on later).

-OMORI KIDS (omori). sunny, basil, and kel. they are always up to some shit. played by annie, basil, and yuri.

that basically sums up limbo as it stands now! now, i'll leave you with our limbo documents!

2022 was the first year I considered myself an actual content creator and has also been my first full year of gif making so I thought it would be fun to compile some of the giffing highlights of the year. thanks jazzy @woosansang for tagging me in this event! In combing through all of my gifs I found a lot of growth and improvement in my own gif making skills (coloring is so much better (!!!!!!!), sharpening is so much better) which is something I'm really proud of because it was always something I beat myself up for. There is always room for improvement but that doesn't negate where I am now!

Besides my improvement as a gif maker, here are some highlights of the content:

the first eight months of the year belonged completely to jongho. I was at peace with the world. everything was fine. and then, everything changed when the dude with the cane attacked. I now have another bias. thanks and fuck you hongjoong

there were always spooky posts. no matter the time of year.

this was the year I started and completed my AUteez series, where I match ateez with an alternate universe that fits them. This series is a testament to my coloring skills and shows off my imagination. One of my favorite things I've done, ever

my 2MVapplejh series, where I color match two music videos that (usually) have similar elements in them. I also really like this series too but I don’t work on it that often

Practice 1: Assignment 3, Concept Art - Nostalgia and Memory

"Memories and Nostalgia" are universal themes that resonate with every one of us. Our memories have the power to transport us back in time, reliving cherished moments and experiences that have shaped our lives. For this assignment, I've chosen to delve into a cultural memory, a vibrant and significant celebration in the heart of Yakutia, Russia - the Yhyakh Festival.

The Yhyakh Festival, also known as the Yakutian Summer Festival, is an event that has been celebrated for generations in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. It is a symbol of cultural pride, where the Yakut people come together to celebrate their heritage. This festival is rich in tradition, featuring vivid displays of traditional clothing, throat singing, and an array of games and contests. The Yhyakh Festival is not just an event; it is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Yakut people, who have persevered through the harshest of environments.

For this assignment, I set out to recreate the iconic environments of the Yhyakh Festival using 3D concept art. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience.

The heart of the Yhyakh Festival is its grand festival grounds. It's an expansive area filled with colorful tents and pavilions, each showcasing various aspects of Yakut culture. Here I used blender in combination with Photoshop.

One of the most striking features of the Yhyakh Festival is the traditional Yakut clothing. Both men and women wear elaborate, embroidered garments made from vibrant materials.

Memories and nostalgia are powerful tools for artists, helping us connect with the past and celebrate our shared human experiences. I get why fantasy authors would default to using, like, the same basic arrangement of seasons and weather and gravity that we have here in The Real World because they have to make up so much shit as it is and it IS probably good praxis to give your readers some familiar touchstones in your world so they can just focus on the plot, but. having said that. I think there should be more settings that have seventeen seasons, all of them different lengths, and constellations that don't have fixed patterns because sometimes they'll get pissy and just move to a different part of the sky, and sometimes the sun tells people things telepathically, and there's a type of weather where the air just gets really thick and difficult to walk through that's unpleasant but not any more uncommon than rain. it's called smärklf.

the worst part of my job (standing around at college orientations being Visibly Queer) is when parents nervously alter their entire walking trajectory to stay out of range as if I'm going to bite them and pass on my infectious homosexuality.

this is wildly eclipsed by the best part of my job, parents who are such wildly enthusiastic allies that their children seem a little embarrassed about it. I'm talking parents who eagerly point out my little rainbow-draped table and urge their kids to come over, parents who excitedly pick through my button box offering up the relevant pride flags and pronouns to their kids, parents who have detailed questions about harassment policies and gender affirming care while their kids are trying to wander away, parents who rush over with open arms and obvious glee on their faces knowing there's a space on campus dedicated to keeping their kids safe.

the ferocity with which these parents love and affirm their queer kids is so humbling and wonderful.
