A Psalm For The Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
I loved everything about this little book. When I first started seeing this cover online I didn't pay too much attention, until the day in which I heard a bit more about it. When I heard not only it's a cozy scifi but the main character is a tea monk I knew I had to have this. The story follows Sibling Dex, a tea monk living in a world where robots have left humans. After awakening robots had decided to leave humans and retreat into nature, and when the story of the book takes place the world has already moved on and readjusted to the change. In their travels Dex will meet a wild robot, and I won't add much more because I don't want to spoil the story. This book healed my soul, it gave me so much existential peace, it was the perfect thing to pick up right now. It's a comforting and calming story that brought me so much joy over simple things, I loved every second I spent with it. I cannot wait to read the sequel and I am sure I will be rereading this in the future. It made into the list of my comfort books. I highly recommend it to everyone, even if scifi isn't usually your thing, if you want to spend your time with a book that will warm your heart and make you smile this is what you should be reading.

Mister Magic by Kiersten White
"All words are imaginary. Sounds that we attached to meaning, images and emotions conjured out of the air. So really, all words are magic."
Unlike Kiersten White's last book, Hide, Mister Magic doesn't quite stick its landing. It's incredibly readable, allowing me to knock out well more than half of it in a single night. White builds palpable atmosphere and tension throughout. And yes, things do get fairly weird - including one especially cringe-inducing piece of body horror. But when we get to the final act things don't go down in a wholly satisfying manner, leaning too heavily on the childhood trauma and parental themes, and not enough on its creepy supernatural elements. I still enjoyed it, but it just didn't wow me in the weird way I was expecting it to back at the end of the first act.
6.5/10
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
Note: I made this photo out of one I made of the book, and other elements (photo of TV, color bars, font on VHS tapes) found online. I claim no ownership of any elements other than my own photo of the book.

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
I took my time with reading this book, but I loved every minute of it, and I cannot wait for the sequel to come out. This book is an historical fantasy that was also inspired by Mulan (who is indeed famous because of the movie but is also a legendary Chinese figure). The plot is quite simple and follows a girl who ends up taking her brother's identity to survive famine and war. With his name the girl also claims as hers his fate of greatness. This book was absolutely phenomenal. Our main character Zhu is amazing, and the way the author explores gender with them is absolutely great. The writing was beautiful, although at times it was a bit slower than my normal liking. It's been a few days since I finished it but I still have a lot of feelings I cannot put into coherent words. I definitely recommend this book, it was a great take on this story. I loved all characters, and as I said I cannot wait to read the sequel once in comes out this summer. I'm leaving a few additional spoilery thoughts under the cut. What I would say about this novel is don't go into it expecting heavy fantasy, as it's more of a backgroud element, but do give it a chance if this book is on your radar because it's worth it.
I read this for the pun in the title prompt of the jumbo challenge (and may I add that when I realized the word play in the title my brain exploded because I never realized it before actially thinming about it).
In the part I'll talk a bit more openly so there will be spoilers.
I am taking this spoilery section mostly to talk about how much I loved the parallel we have between Zhu and her relationship with gender and Ouyang the eunuch general that fights with the Mongols. It was a genious move in my opinion to have these two characters on each side of the war. I absolutely loved them both, because they are very much layered, especially Ouyang. He is a very complicated character emotionally and because of his past, and I am very much intrigued to learn more about him in the sequel. I would also like to add a small note on how much I loved Xu Da and his relationship with Zhu. Their friendship/brotherhood filled my heart with joy.

Winter 2023: favorite books
my sister-in-law got me a Liv Strömquist book for my birthday and I liked it so much that I then bought all of her other books
they’re nonfiction comic books, and as Wikipedia puts it, “her comics are mostly about sociopolitical issues from a feminist and left-wing perspective. They are satirical essay about power and injustices.”
bizarrely only two of her books have been translated into English, Fruit of Knowledge being one of them: tagged/fruit of knowledge
but you’ll have better luck if you can read French, Spanish, Italian, German, or obviously the original Swedish
