The International Space Station (ISS) will be retired in 2030 after more than 32 years of continuous service. Naturally, there are questions regarding what will replace this station, which has served as a bastion for vital research and inter-agency cooperation in space. In the past, China has indicated that their Tiangong ("heavenly palace") space station will be a successor and rival to the ISS, offering astronauts from other nations an alternative platform to conduct research in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). As part of this plan, China recently announced plans to double the size of Tiangong in the coming years. This announcement was shared last Wednesday, October 4th, during the 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2023) in Baku, Azerbaijan. According to the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), three new modules will be added to Tiangong, which currently consists of the Tianhe Core Cabin Module (CMM) and two Laboratory Cabin Modules (LCM)—Wenhian ("Quest for the Heavens") and Mengtian ("Dreaming of the Heavens"). This expansion will be accompanied by extending the station's operational lifetime. According to the statement made by CAST, Tiangong will be in service for more than 15 years, 10 more years than previously announced. This means that China intends to keep Tiangong operational until 2037 or later, several years after the ISS is decommissioned and deorbited. As of the penning of this article, the station has been fully operational since late 2022 (a total of 894 days) and has been occupied for the past 764 days. The station has hosted 15 taikonauts (a maximum of three at a time) at orbital altitudes of 340 to 450 km (210 and 280 mi).

"Lieutenant, what is the purpose of this activity?"
Data's hand, surprisingly warm, rested steady in your own. Matter of fact, his hand was perfectly still; it was your hand's imperfect movements that caused it to move at all. Heavily focused on the task at hand, the question lingered in the air. The brush swept across the nail, leaving liquid pigment in its wake. Delicately, you evenly distributed the lacquer.. Then, with a relieved breath, you straightened away from his hand and deposited the brush back into the small bottle.
It was your idea. Data, with all his access to information and vast knowledge of early Earth history, knew nothing about human spa days. More accurately, he knew of them, but the greater purpose of taking care of oneself was lost on him.
"Well, nothing, really." You blew lightly on his nails, urging the yellow paint to dry faster. "I think it started as a beauty thing. Humans, mostly women, would paint their nails a bright color - like red or pink - and it would catch the eye of others. It became a form of vanity as it progressed, before it sort of died out."
"Intriguing." His brow furrowed at his hands, eyes distant as he skimmed through the database in his mind for more information. In a second, his eyes were focused once more on you. "Ah, I see. Painting one's nails became a popular form of self-expression in the early 20th century, temporarily increasing confidence and gathering the attention of others due to the humans' limited visible color spectrum.
"According to my records, disputes arose as to who would be allowed to wear nail polish, sometimes resulting in violence. I do not understand this. It is a rather simple activity - how could it cause such disagreement?"
You lifted his other hand and began the process of painting the nails once more. Your handiwork wasn't perfect - small bits of the paint attached itself to his cuticles, resulting in a non-uniform appearance - but the Android didn't seem to mind (or understand that it was 'imperfect') and you were enjoying the easy, repetitive motions.
"That's..." You struggled to find the word as you tried cleaning up a large dab of paint on his finger, the result of a sudden hand twitch. "Complicated. Back then, and I guess even still now, humans were uncomfortable with people even slightly different from them. They built up bullshit 'rules' to describe femininity and masculinity, and anybody that didn't fit into those societal standards was ostracized. It was mostly men who were made fun of for painting their nails, since it's considered a 'feminine' activity. They would be labeled as homosexual, regardless of their actual preferences in sex. It was a way to bully them for enjoying something that wasn't deemed masculine enough.
"But," you added, smiling softly at the man sitting across from you, "it was an excellent form of rebellion against those standards. People of all genders would wear the 'wrong' clothing or indulge themselves in things that went against the status quo. Of course, it died out once universal gender equality was established in... 2037?"
Data nodded, confirming the date. "Quite correct, lieutenant. The Complete Gender Equality Bill was passed in October of 2037, and stated that all persons, regardless of biological sex or personal gender identity, were allowed the same rights to equal pay, marriage, privacy, and expression."
His mouth opened for a brief second, ready to explain the various amendments that had been made to the original bill and their impacts on history, before shutting. You glanced up from your work in surprise when he didn't continue to ramble on.
"What's wrong?"
He was frowning again, appearing almost upset. "I have discovered that my tendency to, as the Captain puts it, 'babble' makes those around me uncomfortable and irritated. In an effort to avoid this, I have resorted to shortening my explanations."
Now it was your turn to frown. "You shouldn't have to do that, Data."
"No? But it makes my colleagues uncomfortable when I babble."
"Don't tell me they cut you off..."
Data remained silent, adhering to your wish.
You sighed, upset but also aggravated. Briefly, Data wondered if it was his literal interpretation that troubled you, as he often got confused with human expressions as such.
"You consider them your friends, correct?"
He considered this for a moment. "The definition of friend requires that we share a 'bond of mutual affection.' I do not believe this is true."
"Okay, then, what about companions?"
His head tilted, searching for the definition. "Ah, yes. 'A person or animal with whom one spends a lot of time with or with whom one travels.' My relationship with the rest of the Bridge crew does, indeed, satisfy this definition."
"Then they shouldn't do that. Friends or companions or colleagues or whatever should have a mutual form of respect. You don't just cut off somebody you respect. It's rude and mean and unfair."
"I do not comprehend their actions as mean; I am incapable of feeling that emotion."
You huffed, clearly annoyed at the topic of discussion. "That doesn't matter! What matters is that they know it's rude, but they don't care because they don't hold a mutual respect for you. They see you as lesser than them and it's not fair!"
"Inquiry: what is unfair about it?"
You barely stopped yourself from grabbing his shoulders and shaking to emphasize your point. Instead, eager to release the tension running through your veins, you stood from your bed and began pacing around your room.
“Regardless of whether you are an android or a human, or an android with human emotions, the Captain is human, the first officer is human - they have the emotions and rationelle to know what is rude or inappropriate when talking with someone else. Whether you are able to perceive it as rude means nothing when the people actively silencing you know it’s wrong! By continuing to interrupt you and cut you off, they are actively letting you know in a passive aggressive - possibly even subconscious - way that you are less than human. They claim to accept and encourage your personal goal of embracing human emotions, but actively play a role in stunting that growth by not giving you the space or time of day a normal human would get.
“It’s unfair because it’s hypocritical and demeaning and, ugh, so very human of them to look down on anything slightly different from them.” A long, drawn out sigh escaped you, stealing with it the last remnants of your anger and frustration. You plopped back down on the bed, laying unceremoniously across from Data.
It takes you a minute to gather the energy to sit back up. Your outburst has drained you of energy. After a long work day bustling from control panel to control panel, reattaching wires or rerouting power, you had just enough energy to have a quiet moment with Data. And now it was all gone. So much for a relaxing spa day.
“Lieutenant?”
You hum to let him know you’re listening even as you twist the yellow bottle of paint shut and retrieve the sealing top coat of polish from a miniature makeup bag.
“If, as you suggest, this repetitive behavior is detrimental to my goal, what would you suggest I do to confront the issue?”
Halfway to reaching his hand, Data holds it out for you, meeting you in a familiar middle ground. His hands are still warm and steady. Your brushing movements are clumsier than before. He would have gone so far as to say careless, but the change in your demeanor was akin to exhaustion, so he did not say anything.
You sighed. “If it really doesn’t bother you, do nothing. If you think they really do have a good reason for cutting you off, do nothing. But…” You placed his right hand back in his lap to dry and picked up his left hand. “I think you should mention it, at least. You deserve to be treated with respect, even if you do have a tendency to ‘babble’.”
Data’s mind rushed to consider the possibilities, and his own ‘emotions’. While, no, he did not feel irritation or unfairness in his colleague’s actions, he considered your empathetic viewpoint. Rationally, there were times when he was explaining something in detail to the Captain, something he felt was of importance to the mission at hand, only to be cut off and left lacking in the satisfaction of the explanation. It was not illogical to interpret this as an early form of irritation or inadequacy.
On the other hand, he could understand in certain situations that his extensive elaborating was unhelpful, such as listing times down to their seconds or stating every single number past a decimal point rather than rounding up - topics he often got cut off on.
Having the facts laid bare before him, it was easy to come to a consensus. If he could round up his numbers and calculate how vital the information was before continuing to elaborate on insignificant matters, there would be less need to be interrupted. And if his colleagues on the Bridge could conclude whether or not the information was vital, and learn to cut him off in a ‘kinder’ manner, there would be less interrupting overall.
When he zoned back in from his contemplations, you were softly blowing along his nails.
“Lieutenant?” You hummed again, carefully running your thumbpad over the lacquer to ensure it was dry and continuing to blow when one was a little wet. “I have considered your suggestions and have concluded the best course of action. From my understanding, when humans do not communicate their issues with one another, the problems begin to increase in magnitude. It would be beneficial for myself and my companions to communicate these issues as I have with you and find a middle ground with which to continue forward.”
You brushed your thumb over his nails once again before letting his hands go. You grinned up at him, eyes softened with fatigue. “I think that’s a good idea, Data.” You smiled a little bit wider when Data’s lips curled into an awkward facsimile of a grin.
As he returned to his room, leaving you with an in-depth description of the Complete Gender Equality Bill as you drifted off for the evening he considered how fitting it was to be wearing a symbol of rebellion and standing up for oneself.

Odd thought that occurred to me-Why would Lilian be able to buy Solar even if she had what Solar was worth(in terms of monetary value, I guess)? It’s not like you can walk into a business, point to the vending machine and say ‘I have $10,000, give me that’….Well I guess unless that business is specifically selling vending machines. I guess with some businesses they can decide where their employees will work to some degree, but that’s hardly buying them.
Did Lilian contact some sort of higher up and ask how much money Solar was worth? Was Solar just…Up for sale? If he was, why? From what was said he was doing pretty good at that point, and it’s not like he’s particularly old(I figure Sun is almost if not in the double digit range by NSSW, but that doesn’t really tell me how old Solar himself is other than…Older than that.)
Was Lilian just saving until she got enough money to justify asking or did she have a specific number because the company was willing to just…Replace Solar? That seems like an odd deal since if we look at it from an objective point of view, Solar is both an expensive commodity that requires maintenance(also expensive) and an asset that gains value as he gains experience in what he was made to do.
I could see if they wanted to sell a less popular animutant for that reason-You no longer have the maintenance cost but you do have a large pay out from selling an experienced and already valuable…product? That feels like the wrong word…
However the animutants seem to pay for themselves plus more since that’s how profit works, so why go to the trouble of selling something that makes you money continuously just to replace it with an inexperienced and thus “lesser” version?
Long story short I thought this over way too much and part of me thinks that Lilian either could buy Solar(The company didn’t value him specifically at all) or she couldn’t but told him she could because she was misinformed or something.
You got really good wonders here, and I actually have an answer for you:
Lilian was only told she could possibly purchase Solar. Possibly.
Solar was, indeed, good at his job, the Daycare was very popular and got even expanded and added to other locations as well. Around the time of Lilian's death, Solar had been working for about 9 years. So he had the experience and popularity (even if he wasn't as popular as the main stars), so I think his value was higher than the original purchase value.
So Lilian was working, working, working, because she knew that. Solar would be more expensive than a completely new mutant because he had the knowledge, practice, and experience from all those years working.
She did collect almost the double-amount, thus, the corporation was technically able to buy two new Daycare Attendants.
The company did value Solar, even if they didn't particularly like his personality. He was good with kids. Brought money in. Nobody really cared that he didn't get along with adults. Kids were his job. So he was, valuable.
Until he got depressed after Lilian's death, of course.
With the current timeline, Lilian died on August 1st 2036. Sunrise wakes up on September 30 2037. Level 3 Animutants incubate for 10-12 months, so he was coded and ready for the incubator between late September - early December 2036. This means that his coding and order had been placed very much likely before Lilian's death.
Was this because the company was aware that Lilian was getting close to the goal of purchasing Soalr, thus, they needed a new Attendant, or were they actually only planning for expansion anyway.
In the end, Lilian's money *actually* goes towards the Mega Pizzaplex. Moondrop and Sunrise had already been (at least partially) paid before the company even got Lilian's heritage.
//the timeline is partially just my calculation mistake, Moon and Sun were supposed to be purchased with Lily's money, but since the time doesn't match, the company just probably purchased them before Lilian's death.

Adam Fulford, Colorado inmate 178473, born 1984, incarceration intake at age 33, scheduled for parole December 2037, with full release October 2049
Kidnapping, Assault, Attempted Murder, Fleeing
Nearly eight months after Fulford led law enforcement officers on a massive manhunt across Fort Collins, around Horsetooth Reservoir and into Loveland, a Judge sentenced the 34-year-old man to 35 years in prison and 24 years of mandatory parole.
During one evening, police say Fulford fled from a central Fort Collins apartment complex when they tried to serve an arrest warrant related to missed court appearance in a felony drug case.  He fled on foot before hailing a taxi and directing the taxi driver to evade police, they said. During that time, the taxi driver was shot in the leg — though Fulford's defense said both the driver and Fulford said the gun discharged accidentally.
Police say Fulford hid overnight near Horsetooth Reservoir. The next morning, he stole a car at gunpoint and led law enforcement officers on a chase topping speeds of 100mph. It ended when he smashed into a car driven by Tara Hildebrand, who was taking her two young children to school in Loveland.
Fulford's sister read letters from both herself and Fulford's brother, in which they described him as a caring and giving man with a wonderful sense of humor. They said the father of two was temporarily waylaid by depression and addiction amidst the trauma of losing his father, his job and his dog in a short amount of time. He also endured a breakup, they said.
They did not excuse his "egregious mistakes," they said, but they knew him to be much more than his crimes.
"Adam is not a saint, but he is a loving, compassionate, artistic father," his sister said. As she spoke, Fulford bowed his head and wiped his eyes.
The prosecution and defense offered their own contrasting narratives as to how the crime unfolded.
The Prosecutor described Fulford as a "maniac with a gun" who was not taking responsibility for his actions and distorting the events in a light favorable to himself.  He said Fulford was solely responsible for the manhunt and the subsequent, high-speed chase.
He initially faced 29 allegations, and the list eventually exceeded 50, including 48 felonies.
"Let's be clear: The police don't set the speed in a chase," he said. "... The speed was entirely controlled by Mr. Fulford."
Fulford's public defender countered that Fulford never intentionally caused any injuries and that he should not be defined by his worst mistakes.
"His actions were entirely out of character," she said, going on to describe him as a talented artist and a devoted father. "This is the man that I have gotten to know."
Finally, Fulford took the stand and read from a letter he'd written on a stack of paper. During his lengthy and tearful statement, he apologized to his victims for the emotional and physical pain he caused them.
"My heart broke into 1,000 pieces when I found out that I injured a family and shot a man," he said.
He later added, "I do understand what I've done and what could have happened."
He said that, after what he described as targeting by police, he adopted an "outlaw mentality" and his mind became his own worst enemy. During the night he fled from police, he said he continued to hide and to run because he feared he'd be fatally shot.
"My fear of being killed was not paranoia," he said. "It was a certainty."
He concluded by again apologizing to his victims, thanking his family for their ongoing support and asking for forgiveness in the community.
Ultimately, the Judge accepted the sentence previously stipulated in a plea deal. Fulford was convicted of seven felonies: aggravated robbery, two counts of first-degree assault, motor vehicle theft, second-degree burglary, vehicular eluding and possession of a dangerous weapon. The Larimer County district attorney dismissed dozens of other felony and misdemeanor charges.
The Judge also sentenced Fulford in an unrelated case for which he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. He received 18 years in prison and three years of mandatory parole, to be served concurrently with his other sentence.

13 and 11 combined for your ship of choice!!
Intimacy prompts: 11. "sharing secrets" and 13. "cuddles". Dean/Lisa, 2037 words
Ao3
-
Outside the night was wild, the threatening storm whipping through the mountains like a poltergeist. But inside the cabin was quiet, warmth just this side of smothering still lingering from the glowing embers of the fireplace. Dean knew how quickly the cold could move in, all-too-familiar with how it crept into any spaces it could find and sap everything, even the bone marrow, if given the chance. That’s why he relished his place in the bed, the warm line of Lisa’s body against his front, the slightly damp puff of her breath on his collarbone, how the heavy quilts cocooned their entwined bodies from the encroaching chill.
He pulled Lisa a little tighter to him and wondered what else out there in the night could come creeping in, seeking respite from the storm.
“Usually…” Lisa’s lips moved against his skin. “…people would tell ghost stories on a night like this.”
Her voice was hushed, but it still seemed intrusive in the quiet. Dean shifted his hand up to the back of her neck and began curling her hair through his fingers, causing her to shiver.
“I thought you were asleep,” he murmured into her hairline. The smell of her shampoo mixed with the lingering smoke and he sighed with it, unable to resist nuzzling at her hair.
“Not really,” she admitted. She shifted a little in his grasp, fingers curling loosely in his shirt. “Guess I’m feeling a little- restless.”
Air whistled through the chimney. The trees creaked and groaned outside and through all of it Dean kept his ears pricked for any noise from Ben’s room. An old instinct, well-practiced and at home in this new world he was still navigating; a thought that still sat oddly in his chest.
“Anyway-” Lisa poked at his stomach, payback for tickling her neck. “-how about that ghost story?”
Dean snorted, smiling in spite of himself. “Oh, sure. Any requests? ‘Cause I have tons to choose from.”
Lisa hummed, thinking to herself, and the hand between them drifted to Dean’s ribs, scratching lightly. “On second thought, maybe not; your stories are way too grisly.”
“That’s what makes them good,” Dean teased into her ear, and she swatted him playfully. It was clear they weren’t falling asleep any time soon.
Huffing a little, Lisa began shifting out of Dean’s arms, and he whined unhappily at the loss of her heat as she shifted away. She didn’t go very far, though, simply shifting up the bed so they were eye-to-eye on the pillows. Their fingers twined together in the meantime, and Dean hooked his ankle around hers, his knee nudging between her legs.
“So, if we’re nixing Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” said Dean, thumb rubbing the back of her hand, “what else do you suggest we do?”
From the faint light filtering through the window curtains, Dean could see the outline of her face, the soft impression of her features, half-lit. He caught the movement of her bottom lip between her teeth, tentatively mischievous.
“Truth or Dare always works,” she replied, voice low and scratchy.
Dean narrowed his eyes, skeptically. “Is this a slumber party now?”
“Yes. It’s mine. And I wanna play Truth or Dare- minus the dare.”
“You can’t minus the dare, the dare is the whole point.”
“Fine. I dare you to tell the truth.”
“You haven’t even asked me anything!”
Lisa shushed him through stifled giggles, and he kicked lightly at her calf. Wind blustered at the roof and the windowpane, and they settled again, listening.
“Maybe Truth or Dare isn’t exactly right,” Lisa whispered eventually.
“You’re having trouble picking games tonight.”
“I don’t hear you making suggestions.” He wasn’t sure if she could see his expression in the dark, but after a brief pause, she added, flatly, “No, not that.”
“Fine, Chris Parker,” Dean grumbled, only partly disgruntled. “So- what did you have in mind?”
“Well,” Lisa replied, elongating the ell as she shuffled a little closer. “A night like this is always good for a secret or two.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean-” and her words were quiet, purposeful in the dark- “I tell you something I’ve never told anybody, and you tell me something you’ve never told anybody. Just between us.”
The window rattled, and Dean considered, something twisting uncomfortably in his stomach. It wasn’t as though he were secretive with Lisa, more just- there were a lot of things he didn’t say and a lot of things she didn’t ask. He felt her skin pressed against his, sensed the soft muscle of her body where she laid beside him and thought there wasn’t much that he wouldn’t give to her; but that was easier said than done when he often felt like a rock being flipped over to reveal something pale, wet, and wriggling that was never meant to see daylight in the first place.
Then again- it wasn’t exactly daylight in here, was it?
He must have been quiet too long, because her voice came again, forcing nonchalance, “Or we don’t have to. We can let it go and think of something else. Or go to sleep.”
Dean pressed forward to touch their foreheads together, noses brushing. “It’s alright,” he said softly before pulling back, and felt her relax. Exhaling, he asked, “So- who’s first?”
He watched her think a little; finally, she answered, “Me. I’ll go first.”
“Rookie mistake,” Dean murmured, but he settled a little closer, waiting.
Beneath the covers, Dean felt Lisa’s fingers tighten around his, betraying nervousness. Maybe he shouldn’t think it, but it was oddly reassuring, the knowledge that there were spaces in their relationship that even she was hesitant about. He rubbed her knuckles reassuringly, receiving a gentle squeeze back. Even so, he heard her start and stop, breath caught, before she spoke.
“I was engaged once.”
Dean’s eyebrows shot up. “Really.”
“Once,” she repeated. “Briefly. Like, a million years ago.”
“Before Ben?”
A sharp inhale. Dean shifted, waiting.
“…About two weeks after I found out,” she admitted, voice small beneath the storm outside.
He wondered how serious the relationship was. None of Lisa’s family ever said anything about someone long-term; they’d all seemed to think that she had been too preoccupied with raising Ben to focus on a boyfriend. Lisa had certainly never said anything to him- not until now, at least.
“I think he panicked,” Lisa continued, and even in the dark he could tell she wasn’t looking at him, the shine of her eyes angled away and down. “I panicked, too. I wasn’t even sure I was gonna-”
She cut herself off; only one secret allowed tonight.
“Anyway,” she continued with forced nonchalance. “I was young, and scared; and he was nice and good-looking, with a steady job. And I liked him. And I thought- stability, y’know? Better than doing it alone. Maybe that could’ve been enough for us.”
Enough, Dean thought. A path lay behind that word, dark and turbulent like the night around them. He shook it away, pushing it back with all the other things he hid in the back of his mind, left to brood and fester until a darker, lonelier night came along.
Instead, he said, “So, what changed?”
She shrugged. “After a week, I realized it wouldn’t work. I had this- premonition? I guess? Like I could just see how that would all go, how miserable we’d all be. And when I started thinking that it would be better if I did it alone, I realized I really could. So, I called it off, and we didn’t keep in contact after.”
And that was true. That was more like the Lisa he knew: self-assured and emotionally astute. Sometimes he felt that, so long as she had Ben, Lisa could weather anything: a lighthouse sat atop a stern cliff face, beckoning home even as it bid farewell.
“Do you…” His voice wasn’t steady enough, and he cleared his throat, trying again. “Do you regret it? Not marrying him?”
“No,” she said, calm and certain. Then her forehead was pressed to his again, her breath warm and soft against his cheek. “And I don’t regret anything since, either.”
Dean closed his eyes, something settling uneasily into place. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe her, exactly; just that some wounded animal inside his chest, flinching from affection still, couldn’t be persuaded yet. So, he met the press of her head with his own and slotted his mouth to her cheek, just behind the corner of her mouth, not quite a kiss.
“…So,” Lisa said, not quite a question, her lips catching on his stubble.
“Guess it’s my turn,” said Dean, voice muffled.
“You don’t have-” She stopped; there was a puff of air against his cheek. “I mean- maybe this got a little too serious.”
An out, then. Dean breathed in her shampoo again and felt the scent of her lotion tickle the back of his throat, and realized he didn’t want it. No sense in only one of them digging up old ghosts tonight, after all. Dean pulled back from her and found her silhouette again, a faint impression of nonchalance on her face. He wondered if, in a better light, would she look as exposed as he thought she did right now.
“I want my turn,” he said, infusing the words with a little petulance. He was rewarded with the tease of her smile, her head ducking. “Don’t steal my turn.”
“Fine, fine.” She shifted a little, readjusting her position. She didn’t say anything else, but just looked at him, expectant and waiting.
He squeezed at her fingers as the roof above them rattled.
“I, uh…” he started, but his voice unexpectedly gave out, and he swallowed. Lisa’s expression was curious, and the shine of her eyes caught him, settling him even as they made his nerves climb up the back of his throat. Suddenly, he felt ridiculous.
“I tried out for a part in a school play.”
He let the quiet sit between them for a moment, wind clawing at the windows again. When he glanced at Lisa’s face, he could just see her starting to grin, wicked and delighted.
“You did not,” she whispered, gleeful.
He laughed, a little embarrassed, and said, “I did.”
“I didn’t think you guys ever settled anywhere long enough to even think of doing that!”
“We didn’t.” Dean hesitated. “I- spent two months at a boys’ home. Got pretty invested in school, looked into extra-curriculars, and thought- hey, why not, y’know? Ended up leaving before I found out if I even got the part.”
As he spoke, Lisa’s expression shifted into something he couldn’t quite read. Honestly, he was a little grateful for it, unable to bear either her tenderness or her teasing, not about this.
“For the best, probably,” he said, looking away again. “Don’t think the world’s ready for the Dean Winchester One-Man Show.”
“I’d pay to see that.”
“Oh, would you.” He huffed, but it turned into a sigh. “Nah. Probably would’ve wound up where I am now either way.”
“But what if you didn’t?” she asked. “What if you- I don’t know. Maybe you wouldn’t have made Broadway or anything, but-”
“It was one play,” Dean said, sharper than he’d intended. Lisa went quiet, and he shuffled a little closer to her again, kissing her forehead in apology. “Sorry.”
“It’s alright,” she said softly. “I don’t mean to push.”
Dean shook his head. “You weren’t. I’m just- I’m fine with how I am now, alright? I don’t need to go chasing what-ifs, I’m good right here.”
Lisa freed her hand from Dean’s, and he felt her knuckles at his throat, her thumb against his chin. He dipped his head and kissed the pad of it. Tree branches rapped at the side of the cabin and Lisa shivered.
“Rough night out there,” Dean murmured against her hand. “Never know what might try and get in.”
“I’d protect you,” Lisa said. Her eyes were dark and glittering from the faint light of the window, and that, Dean knew, was a secret too, just for them.
They didn’t say anything more. Eventually they fell asleep, foreheads pushed together and limbs entangled; outside, the wind carried on.

The Alphas of Veda
In Veda, the top one hundred Betas and all Alphas are kept on a power ranking list. This is done for a lot of reasons, but the one most people care about is the online shows that broadcast the updated list changes. The hosts of these shows often show off public ability showcases the Betas and Alphas have done, events involving them recently, and all sorts of other BS.
Think of it like celebrity culture, but with superpowers.
The Alpha list only has seven people on it, at the start of Descent. It contains only the Alphas who are both currently alive and currently residing in the city.
There have been other Alphas in the city. Three of them have died before the story begins and one is currently not in the city. Thus, there are four Alphas in the history of Veda left off this list.
The first Alpha in the world, Gertrude Grey, was marked as an Alpha in 1994 and held the position as number one Alpha from the list's conception in 2011 to her death in 2034.
The list, ranked from most powerful to least powerful, in accordance to R scores, is as follows.
#1: Fiyero Monasterio
He/Him, 26. Pyrokinesis. Joined list in 2034.
The terrifying right hand of Thad Fabulon and the boogeyman of the Chorus. The third Alpha to ever be granted the rank of #1 Metahuman in Veda and the only person to ever regain that rank after losing it. Fiyero is a tattooed, smokey man who answers to Fabulon for reasons unknown. He is known for fighting in underground fighting rings, for which he is infamous for his prowess and efficiency, and he uses a cane for reasons unknown to the public.
There is quite a bit of controversy over having the #1 position filled by such a dangerous and notorious criminal, but as he is noticeably above the others, the position is officially his.
#2: Guy Carnell
He/Him, 25. Gravity Alteration. Joined list in 2036.
A pompous social media influencer who primarily uses his powers to pick up hot women and get ads and sponsorships on his online accounts. Guy takes the celebrity aspect of Meta culture very seriously and considers himself the "first professional Metahuman influencer". In interviews, he tends to come off as shallow but well-meaning and very charismatic.
As the most powerful Metahuman who regularly makes public appearances, Guy functionally acts as the #1 Meta of Veda, unofficially, something he takes massive pride in.
#3: Hani Qadir
She/Her, 31. Plant Communion & Control. Joined list in 2032.
A PhD holding botanist trying to solve hunger and drought problems throughout the world. Considered one of the most benevolent and powerful Metas to ever live. Hani has spent years working toward healing the damage made by global warming to plant life and food security, as well as helping nature thrive in a changing world.
Hani comes off as a saint on television, always well-spoken, always polite, always sweet, but her friends will tell you she has the sharpest, driest wit you'll ever find. Hani keeps quiet about it, though she is often seen giggling behind a hand in interviews.
#4: June Holiday
She/Her, 15. Vector Manipulation. Joined list in 2037.
The youngest Alpha to ever be recorded, as she was ranked as such at age thirteen. June is a dorky, energetic teenage girl who wants nothing more than to be the best twin sister to her brother, Jonas, and the best girlfriend to her girlfriend, Simone, as she can be.
June is considered, by the government (Veda, Canada, UN) and by the culture of the city to be the perfect Alpha Metahuman. She exists entirely without trauma, something thought impossible of Alphas, and her powers are by far the most stable and most capable of growth. While June manages to balance this pressure most of the time, she is terrified of messing up and causing more people to hate Alphas.
#5: Sage Beaufort
They/Them, 34. Teleportation. Joined list in 2028.
The owner of a pizzeria, Sage does their best to avoid the spotlight and celebrity life that being an Alpha brings. However, Sage has never been able to stay away from people in need, and so whenever Riko calls, asking for search and rescue help, Sage gears up and heads out. It's a unique situation, as heroes are illegal, and Sage had to be authorized to work with the firefighters on a volunteer firefighter basis.
You won't find anyone more jaded by the Alpha list and Alpha hate-love culture of Veda than Sage. Sage lacks the charisma to make themself seem less scary than their powers make them look, and mostly just scowls when on camera or in public. They're a hard worker, and they want to help, but Sage has no love for Veda and stays only because it's easier than trying to run.
#6: Riko Yamamoto
She/Her, 32. Durable Constructs. Joined list in 2029.
A firefighter and a trans woman who is considered one of the closest things to a modern day superhero the world allows. Riko utilizes her ability in her work to help her firehouse be one of the most effective in the city. She and her wife are quite happy together.
Riko has been on the list for ten years and has remained near the bottom the entire time.
As she puts it, however, being on the bottom of the Alpha list still puts you at the top of the food chain and in the public eye. Riko is a working class woman with a crude sense of humour and a deep love of bar games, cheesy poetry, and making people laugh.
#7: Thad Fabulon
He/Him, 29. Psychic Puppetry & Hub Connection. Joined list in 2037.
The most famous Alpha of Veda is Thad Fabulon, who is also the only unofficial Alpha. Technically, Thad's abilities have never been recorded at Alpha levels, but they also haven't been recorded in over a decade. Based on prior knowledge of his abilities, and subsequent showcases of greater power, he is assumed an Alpha. Though it could be argued he's also in this list for safety reasons. After all, when a man like this runs a cult, you take notice.
Thad Fabulon is the founder and leader of the Chorus, an infamous cult of Metas and non-Metas alike who live and work in Veda. Thad strives to connect people, to bring people together, and to remove the burden of overwhelming pain and struggle from everyone who lets him. Or so he says, anyway. Mostly, Thad is publicly known for staying in the background, allowing his Muses to do his work for him, and making spectacles of how little the police can do to stop him.
He's a dangerous man and it was his act of pulling Fiyero Monasterio into his cult, and thus under his incredible psychic power, that cemented his status on the Alpha list.

Underground Hero Course - U.A.'s Newest Department
Underground Hero Course - U.A.'s Newest Department by AnalistaVacilo
After meeting a bunch of kids wanting to become Heroes, Shouta is shocked to know that some people actually aspire to be Underground Heroes even with flashy quirks, or, in a very specific case, no quirk at all. First, in the current society, most people see heroics as a path lined to fame, money and attention. Those kids claim that underground heroics will give them the resources to save much more lives than the limelight could ever do. This is true, that's one of the reasons he chose it in the first place. Second and most concerning in his opinion, hero students hardly become aware that underground heroics is even a possible career path until they are already finishing their school education. Those kids not only know about it, but they see past what Shouta used underground heroics for and thrive to turn it into something much bigger than he always thought was possible. Hence, that is how he finds himself asking Nedzu to open a Hero class for Underground Students. The Rat seems more than happy to comply, Tsukauchi not so much.

Just create a separate wing for transwomen inmates. That way actual women are safe from them and the transwomen are safe from other men.
A transgender inmate who impregnated two women while incarcerated at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women has been moved to a new facility, according to the Department of Corrections.
Demi Minor, 27, was transferred to Garden State Youth Correctional Facility, a prison for young adult offenders in Burlington County, last month, Dan Sperrazza, a Department of Corrections spokesman, said.
He said the DOC moved Minor to the vulnerable unit at the facility and that she is currently the only woman prisoner on the site. Sperrazza said he could not comment on the DOC’s specific housing actions in Minor’s case because of policies around privacy.
According to the corrections department, Minor is serving a 30-year sentence for manslaughter and is eligible for parole in 2037.
Neither she nor her attorney could be reached for comment Friday.
But a July 5 post on Minor’s website claims corrections officers forcibly removed her from Edna Mahan and beat her during the transfer to Garden State Youth Correctional facility.
The DOC said it couldn’t comment on the allegations but is investigating.
“NJDOC cannot comment on any active investigations,” a statement read. “The Department has zero tolerance for abuse, and the safety and security of the incarcerated population and staff are of critical importance.”
The news of Minor’s transfer comes nearly three months after NJ Advance Media reported that Minor impregnated two women during “consensual sexual relationships.”
The revelation drew criticism of state corrections officials, who have grappled with allegations that correctional officers sexually abused and exploited prison inmates for the past decade.
It also cast a spotlight on New Jersey’s transgender prisoner policy established following a settlement agreement with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Jersey in June 2021. The policy stipulated that the DOC house transgender prisoners according to their gender identity. The settlement agreement mandated that the policy remains in place for at least a year. The year ended last month.
Sperrazza said the DOC continues to operate under the policy agreed upon with the ACLU but added that “the department is currently reviewing the policy for housing transgender incarcerated persons with the intention of implementing minor modifications.”
He said decisions related to an incarcerated person’s housing, like Minor’s, “are made within the parameters of the settlement agreement which requires consideration of gender identity and the health and safety of the individual.”
Advocates hailed the settlement agreement as necessary reform that moved New Jersey to the forefront of trans rights along with states like California and Massachusetts that have implemented policies on how transgender prisoners should be housed and medically treated.
The majority of transgender inmates in the United States are housed in prisons according to their gender assigned at birth and are often subjected to violence and harassment, according to an NBC News investigation published in 2020.

Post 796
The inmate came to court with a black eye and a cut to his head. He didn’t say what caused the injuries; the Judge didn’t ask.
Justin Clark, West Virginia inmate 3512268, born 1989, incarceration intake in 2019 at age 29, scheduled for released 07/27/2037
Murder
A 29-year-old Fairmont, West Virginia man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, admitting he shot a 39-year-old Grafton man in the back in June 2017.
Justin Edward Clark could face up to 40 years in prison but was sentenced to 20 years. No matter what sentence is imposed, Clark will face at least 10 years in prison.
He could have been convicted of first-degree murder without mercy had he gone to trial.  Also, the plea deal between Taylor Prosecutor John Bord and defense attorney Kevin Tipton saw multiple other charges of wanton endangerment and child neglect dismissed.
Those charges were made in connection with the danger faced by four children who were in the vehicle when Clark shot Frank Newbraugh with a .22-caliber pistol.
Three of the children are Samantha A. Dakon-Clark’s, while the fourth is Justin Clark’s.
The guilty plea by Clark, as well as an earlier plea to voluntary manslaughter and child neglect by Dakon-Clark, 31, of Fairmont, enabled Bord to resolve the case without putting the children through the trauma for a second time at trial.
Justin Clark described a volatile vehicle ride involving himself, Dakon-Clark, Newbraugh and the children, with a stop at a gas station in Fetterman and, shortly after that, his shooting of Newbraugh in the left shoulder.
Justin Clark said he and Dakon-Clark then pushed Newbraugh out of the vehicle.
Justin Clark indicated he didn’t know that Newbraugh was mortally wounded. But he said he did see the man fall to the ground as he was pushed out, then stagger to get up as Dakon-Clark sped away in her Expedition, in which they were riding.
Dakon-Clark’s plea deal had required her to cooperate against Justin Clark, which may have helped pave the way for Tuesday’s plea.
Represented by attorney Scott Shough, Dakon-Clark faces up to 15 years for manslaughter and 1-5 years for child neglect. However, she would be eligible for parole after serving 4 3/4 years, even if the maximum possible sentence is imposed.
The defense attorneys are likely to suggest that Newbraugh posed a threat, but they will have to overcome a statement from Justin Clark that Dakon-Clark wanted to meet up with Newbraugh that day to help her score some drugs.
And there also may be plenty of statements to the court from the family of Newbraugh that paint a different picture of the relationship and what might have happened. Several family members or supporters of Newbraugh attended the hearing. A handful of supporters or family of Justin Clark also were on hand.
Justin Clark showed up for court with a black eye and a cut to his head. The Judge asked him about treatment he received for it to make sure the defendant was in good enough shape to plead guilty. Justin Clark said he was taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a facial fracture and a small concussion. He has been taking Tramadol for pain, he added.
Tipton and the defendant said he was fine to enter a plea.
Justin Clark didn’t say what caused the injuries, and the Judge didn’t ask.
