What is the deal with the Exorcist's masks?

As we have seen with Lute, the other Exorcists and Vagatha (in the flash back), Exorcists wear "full-head masks with LED screens on their faces". I assume the same is true for Adam, but that is besides the point. Two questions that have been following me for a while, dear reader, are as follows: why do they wear masks at all and why do they usually have the right eye crossed out on it?

Of course, masks do have various practical uses: protection of one's face, obscuring one's identity and creating unity among those wearing the masks are just a few to name. I could see a possibility that the LED screens are meant to enable non-verbal communication between the Exorcists, that they are a scare tactic against Sinners or that they hide communicative equipment!

The far more compelling question though is why they consistently show an eye crossed out? It's not a standard, we know that by now; we have seen Exorcists without an eye crossed out on their masks and we have seen Vagatha with her left eye crossed out. But is it just a stylistic choice or does it have a deeper meaning?

Looking into the bible, Matthew 5.29 calls for followers to pluck out their right eye if it tempts them to sin. Lev. 24.19–21 call for returning damage in the same way it was endured - an eye for an eye.

Both are very interesting concepts, don't you think, dear reader?

The "right eye" in Matthew is meant as the good eye that stands for moral integrity, generosity and light, not literally the right side. But there are also interpretations in which the right eye symbolizes rationality, logic, and the conscious mind! The left eye meanwhile is linked to intuition, creativity, and the subconscious.

Is crossing an eye out a figurative reminder to ignore what could lead an Exorcist to sin - to refuse their order? Do Exorcists put aside their integrity and their morals, their intuition and gut instinct aside to fullfill their role? Could it even be a testament to prior transgressions and thus a reminder to not sin again? Could it be testament to Hell having wounded Heaven in such a way that the Extermination is paying it back the same way?

Vagatha, listening to her gut and thus not killing the child. Adam, having neither morals, nor intuition. His cruelty based in his unknowing. Lute, sacrificing her integrity to follow her orders.

Quite fitting, isn't it?
