He breathes out.
He follows the goosebumps caused by the carbon dioxide and oxygen mix coming from his lungs with his eyes.
Then his fingers itch to touch the bumpy skin; his fingertips almost not touching.
The man underneath him stretches and a noise is formed inside. It's a sound of content.
“What are you doing, Sherlock?”
“Deepening my analysis about the impact of my breaths on your skin.”
“You mean my goosebumps?”
“Horripilation, yes.”
“Nobody says that, you know.”
“Doctors say that. And I happen to know one.”
“But you aren't!”
Sherlock falls silent. So John turns around laying on his arm now, his upper body facing Sherlock. “What have you found out?”
“A variety of deductions, really.”
“Well, tell me about them.”
“First: Me breathing on your skin causes horripilation. Second: You like it when we share the air in between signs of affection.”
“It's called kisses, babe.”
“That's what I said, yes. Third: You like it when I breathe into your ear.” Sherlock whispers this into said body part. John stifles a shiver.
“You're such a tease.” The blogger growls and pulls Sherlock on top of him. They breathe the same air, hesitating, anticipating, until John gives in and kisses him lightly.
“Conclusion?”, he asks then.
“Conclusion”, Sherlock answers. “I am breathtaking.” Then he kisses him until breathlessness.

Fluffbruary: Day 25
Looking back, it's funny, the way Sherlock manipulated the truth to get John to move in with him.
"Sometimes I don't talk for days on end." A blatant lie. He's always eager to share with John everything he knows and learns.
"I play the violin when I'm thinking." A half-truth. He does, but he didn't mention how he "plays" it (makes it screech) half the time.
Finally, the omissions. He didn't mention his experiments, or the indoors shootings.
Even if Sherlock had been completely truthful from the beginning, it wouldn't have changed anything. John loves his life with the madman.

It's here! My second FTH entry for @shakespearelovedladymacbeth. I was going to wait until it was completely finished to post, but I'm mostly there... the once-weekly updates should keep me motivated and in check! Chapter 1 of 5 is now available, with updates to come ON FRIDAYS.
Rated E, but the reason won't come until Chapter 4. ;)
COLD INSIDE
Sherlock has just shot Magnussen, and John feels adrift. Everything is wrong. He's fairly sure he hates his wife, too. The regrets are too numerous for him to count. Sherlock is in prison, his ultimate fate unknown and the isolation slowly (or, rather, worryingly quickly) whittling away at his sanity. Mycroft is equally untethered, scrambling for options. Perhaps John can help. And perhaps, just perhaps, they can manage to save Sherlock and rid themselves of Mary in one fell swoop. (HLV fix-it, 5,076 words/?)
Excerpt:
Mycroft just blinked at him, head tilted. “Of course you have a future. A life sentence with a tariff of 25-30 years, as you well know.”
John groaned. “Jesus.”
“Brilliant as always, John. I fully agree. Hardly a future, dear brother. You’ll find I end up committed… elsewhere by summer. At least being housed amongst the general population would be mentally stimulating.”
“You’d be murdered within a day,” spat John. His eyes were closed, lips pursed; he appeared to be in physical pain.
“Quite,” winced Mycroft. “We cannot let that happen.”
Sherlock narrowed his eyes at Mycroft, then gestured both at the security cameras and to the officers behind the glass. “I can’t imagine you’d reveal any sort of nefarious plot while so carefully surveilled. Nor are you capable of perverting the course of justice within your beloved Crown Court. Not you, in bed as you are with the government.”
Mycroft leaned forward onto his elbows, almost hissing as he spoke. “Parliament, Sherlock, that means I have access to Parliament. And that my plan is wholly legal, if all proceeds as anticipated. Though I find your behavior alarming. You’d normally have expected such an intervention. For me to ‘work my magic’, as you so often say when you expect me to clean up your messes. You’ve not been alert. Not focusing. Not thinking. You’ve been–” “–In prison, yes. Well done. Thank you for the reminder.”

20 Questions for Fic Writers

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

I do, if only to thank the reader.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
None of my fics have angsty endings.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All my fics have happy endings. For a while, I played with the idea of writing an unhappy ending for Enigma, but luckily decided against it.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really. There’s been what I like to call ‘The Rabies Outrage’ in connection with my fic The Horse and his Doctor, in which I had John, a veterinarian, have an animal checked for rabies (as one does in this profession, especially if an animal is injured and is behaving oddly). Several (British) readers alerted me to the fact that there is no rabies in the UK and that hence, John wouldn’t have done this. I had, however, confirmation from actual British vets that of course one would check for this disease, even in the UK. But those readers made it seem as though I had personally insulted them by implying that rabies might be present in the UK after all.
9. Do you write smut?
Awkward and hopefully realistic sex-scenes, more like.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Kinda.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I’ve had fic uploaded at Wattpad and Goodreads without my permission, albeit on Goodreads, I think it was unintentional. They were uploaded via people’s ebook-readers. Still, it’s a pain to have them taken down again, and now with all this AI crap, I’m really sensitive about this issue, especially because plenty of my art has been stolen and uploaded in places where I’d never give permission for it to be uploaded. Some of it has also been used on t-shirt and stuff without my permission.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, several.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Back in the days of message boards, I co-wrote Tolkien fics.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Not sure about ‘all time’, but at the moment, it’s BBC Johnlock.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The Passage
16. What are your writing strengths?
My readers can probably judge this better than I can, but I’d say dialogue and making places come alive.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Smut, I guess.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I’ve done this a few times: German in Nightjet, Over Hill and Under Hill and Enigma; French and Italian in Slipstream. I enjoy it as a reader, too.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
My first fanfic (of sorts) was an Indiana Jones story (first written in longhand and then typed on an actual typewriter – those were the days ...).
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Difficult to say. I like and dislike bits of all of my fics.

Whumptober Day 25 "they're not breathing"
“You know,” after a while John continued, this time focusing his teary eyes on Sherlock, “Mrs Hudson found Mary’s recording. She had understood how you tick so much better than anyone else. Mycroft had been there in 221b as well and he had been utterly clueless about your real motivation for doing all this. It should have been funny to see him like this but it actually scared the hell out me.” John took a deep breath. “Mrs Hudson made me watch the video. Mary told you to go to hell in order to save me and I suddenly understood that you have done exactly what she demanded of you. Had I not heard what Mary had planned for you, and me, I would not have come back to the hospital to rescue you. You would dead now. For real.”
“It’s OK, John. It’s over.” Sherlock croaked, shaken by John’s inner torment.
John sniffed. “These minutes it took me to rush to the hospital were possibly the worst in my life. With every second ticking by I prayed that I would not be too late.”
Reaching out with one trembling hand, Sherlock grabbed John’s arm, tugging softly. His voice wavering, Sherlock stressed, “But in the end, you still returned. You saved me after all, John. The result is the same. You could have come earlier and have avoided the choking maybe but I am alive and that’s the only thing that counts. At least for me.”
“When I arrived, I was afraid to death that I’d be too late just like back then when you stood on this cursed roof. Smith had just killed you, Sherlock!” John cried out. “I saw the heart rate monitor and you were not breathing! You were fucking dead and it was all my fault again. When I performed CPR, I swore that if you survived, I would talk to you for real this time, say what I feel, not just babble to your gravestone.”
“And you did, John. You did it good.”
“Yeah, it feels good, too.”

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I love getting comments, so it’s the least I can do (even if it takes a few days). I love when authors respond to my comments, so it’s only fair.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Like many of the people answering these questions, I don’t write angsty endings. I considered it for Jam (I almost didn’t include the epilogue) but I love a happy ending.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All my fics have happy endings. If I had to pick one as “happiest”, I’d say The Man With the Cartier Frames.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have not, luckily. I’ve had a weird comment or two where I’ve thought “why did you tell me that”, but nothing super negative.
9. Do you write smut?
Not really? I’ve written some mature scenes that allude to things, but don’t go into detail.
10. Do you write crossovers?
No. I have particular objections, but I doubt I ever will.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, Lines in the Sand has been translated into French and That Time of Year into Russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I haven’t. I don’t object to the concept, but I’m not sure I’d be a great collaborator given my current writing style. I think I’m better at betaing which gives me a way to work with other fic writers.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
This is really tough. I feel like it’s okay if your “all time” favourite ship changes every five or ten years. I mean, I am a very different person at 40 than I was at 25. My favourite to write is definitely Johnlock—they have a great dynamic and are both really interesting characters in their own rights. So, they are definitely up there. The other ship that comes to mind in terms of those that have really stood the test of time for me is Goren/Eames from Law & Order:CI (a very small fandom). Goren has a lot of Sherlockian traits and Eames is just incredibly cool (and both actors are gorgeous, which doesn’t hurt!). I discovered Merlin in the last year or two and really like Merthur (honestly, I also really like Mergwenthur which I never thought would be my thing, but Gwen is so lovely), but it’s too early to tell if that will last long enough to be on my all time list!
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Corsi, my NHL Johnlock AU. I have a couple chapters written, but I started it a long time ago and my writing style has changed a fair bit since then. I think I’d want to go back and rewrite the first chapter, but that seems like a waste … so, instead, I will just leave it to languish.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I write Parentlock really well. I have young kids, so it’s relatively easy for me to make kids read age appropriate (which they often don’t in stories, be they fic or published). I hope I am also able to convey that delicate balance that parents feel—namely adoring their kids with every once of your being while wanting to throttle them. Basically, I think I can write believable kids and believable parents.
I also think I am okay at creating cases, mainly because I become a bit obsessed with making the pieces fit. I like internal consistency!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I can’t plot out a fic well enough that I can post anything before it’s done. Which means, that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to write a truly long fic (say longer than 50K words). To have the motivation to write something that long, I think I would need the dopamine hit from posting and getting feedback. But, I just can’t see me ever posting a fic before it’s completely written, because of how often I go back and revise as I write. Particularly for fics with any sort of case—I’ll have the loose parameters of the case set out, but the details won’t emerge until I write. Which may mean I have to go back and edit earlier content to make those details work (internal consistency!). Even things like John’s work schedule or the timing of a phone call or what time Rosie gets out of school may change a half dozen times as I write to make the other pieces work.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
I think it’s fine, but it’s best if you have a half-decent knowledge of that language. The only language I would use is French, should that ever come up.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
X-Files (this also seems to be a common theme)
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Ugh. This is an impossible question. I really like Beneath the Surface—I love epistolary fics and I think I did pretty well with text exchanges in that one. I am also pretty proud of Jam. So, I suppose those would be my faves.

"The camera," Sherlock had gasped, curling forward to protect it. He'd been breathing hard, his hair plastered against his skull, water running down his face, beading at the end of his nose. His eyes had been the color of the swirling sky.
"Fuck the camera," John had said, and kissed him.
Sherlock had kissed back. His lips had been cold. He'd gripped John's shoulder with one hand, his fingers digging in hard. The hood of John's poncho had slipped, icy rain spilling down his neck, and he'd barely noticed.
I finished my FTH 2022 fanart for the first winner: @discordantwords! The image portrays a scene from "Whirlwind".
I enjoyed making the scene completely digitally with Clip Studio Paint. I took the liberty of tweaking Sherlock's outfit from the scene, taking off his poncho and leaving him a wet white shirt! These fanarts have to be a fanservice first of all for myself! I hope you enjoyed my work dear @discordantwords I had a lot of fun creating it ♥

I love the idea that Sherlock and John danced together in 221b, so intimate! So I started a new fluffy and romantic fanart. I have been able to carry it forward a lot, and I want to show it to you before completing it with more pencils. As you can see, I start with red pencil on tanned paper.
Any suggestion for fics with dancing in 221b for me?

DANCING IN 221B
Hey lovely people! I have completed my drawing of John and Sherlock softly dancing in 221b. As in my other drawings, I used tan paper, with red pencil, black pencil and white gouache. These designs really have therapeutic power for my soul!

"Ah, fudge!", John said, facepalming. They had just walked back into the changing room after their ice-hockey training.
"What's up?", Mike asked.
"Forgot my helmet at the rink. I'll be right back!"
John rushed out, grabbed his helmet from the bench right next to the ice, straightened up and-
dropped the helmet. It bounced a few times on the ice. It made loud thuds.
"Watson! You alright?", a voice from somewhere on John's left hand side yelled.
"Yeah, Greg, just forgot my...", John's eyes were fixed on the boy on the ice rink. It was a figure skater. A really beautiful figure skater. "Um..." His skating was... beautiful. His face was beautiful. In fact everything about him was beautiful. "My uh..."
The skater finished a flawless pirouette, in a half sitting position, his leg stretched out. How is that even- Wait- why did he stop- oh my god. Is he coming- what- wait that's-
"Your helmet?", the figure skater asked with a kind smirk on his lips. A kind smirk?! What the hell is a kind smirk?!
"Sorry- what?", John asked, after his brain finally registered that the figure skater had said something.
"You forgot your helmet?"
"I- uh... Yeah- I-", John let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding. He half recognized Greg smirking at him, bemused.
"Do you wanna go-", a side glance at his friend proved his suspicion. He didn't care. "On a..." Damn, this guy has gorgeous eyes. John gulped. "Date? With me?" Where did that question come from?
The boy raised his eyebrows. "Is that it?"
"Is that what?", John countered.
"We only just met. And we're gonna go on a date."
Oh, shit. He hadn't been thinking. He had just spoken. Come on, Watson. Get a grip! Confidence! Confidence is everything! "Problem?", John asked, feeling himself grin (hopefully convincingly).
The skater bandied looks with Greg, bemused as well as amused. He shifted his weight on one hip, then looked John up and down. "We don't know a thing about each other. I don't know where we're meeting. I don't even know your name."
Oh, right. Awkwardly John fumbled with his helmet, stuck it under his left arm, so he could extend his right, "John Watson. Speedy's. Tomorrow night at six P.M.?"
The boy shook his hand, with a suspicious eye. "Sherlock. And fine. But only because you're cute when you're flustered."
"Why- I am not-"
"See? Cute. See you tomorrow.", and Sherlock glided off the ice. There was a certain swing in his hips that made John drop his eyes...
"What. on earth. was that?", Greg asked with a disbelieving chuckle.
"That, Greg", John sucked in a breath. "Was me realizing, there's no way in hell I am straight." John said, still staring at the door through which the beautiful figure skater had left.

Is it a phenomenon worth thinking about? I guess. But after a while it just ends up like…… okay you can’t make people unwrite those fics. You can’t go in and mass delete all the Johnlock fic or whatever. So what’s really being accomplished here? If people took half the time they spend handwringing about this and actually leave kudos/comments on the stuff they say they want… you’d likely see more of it.

Hello everyone! Happy WIP Wednesday. I thought I'd use the opportunity to share an excerpt from my latest FTH work (for @shakespearelovedladymacbeth) - COLD INSIDE, a Johnlock HLV fix-it. I've included the accompanying graphic and a bit of conversation close to the end of Chapter 1 (of a planned 5). Everything has been outlined and Chapter 1 has been completed. I plan to tackle Chapter 2 over the next few days! So... not too sure when it will be posted. I'd rather wait until the fic is completed to share. (Tagging everyone below the cut who's asked to be tagged in the past or who is kind enough to tag me in their own posts! Feel free to share your own WIPs, everyone.)
SYNOPSIS: Sherlock has just shot Magnussen, and John feels adrift. Everything is wrong. He's fairly sure he hates his wife, too. The regrets are too numerous for him to count. Sherlock is in prison, his ultimate fate unknown and the isolation slowly (or, rather, worryingly quickly) whittling away at his sanity. Mycroft is equally untethered, scrambling for options. Perhaps John can help. And perhaps, just perhaps, they can manage to save Sherlock and rid themselves of Mary in one fell swoop. (will likely be rated E)
Mycroft just blinked at him, head tilted. “Of course you have a future. A life sentence with a tariff of 25-30 years, as you well know.”
John groaned. “Jesus.”
“I find I quite agree, Mycroft. Hardly a future. You’ll find I end up committed… elsewhere by summer. At least being housed amongst the general population would be mentally stimulating.”
“You’d be murdered within a day,” spat John. His eyes were closed, lips pursed; he appeared to be in physical pain.
“Quite,” winced Mycroft. “We cannot let that happen.”
Sherlock narrowed his eyes at Mycroft, then gestured both at the security cameras and to the officers behind the glass. “I can’t imagine you’d reveal any sort of nefarious plot while so carefully surveilled. Nor are you capable of perverting the course of justice within your beloved Crown Court. Not you, in bed as you are with the government.”
Mycroft leaned forward onto his elbows, almost hissing as he spoke. “Parliament, Sherlock, that means I have access to Parliament. And that my plan is quite legal, if all proceeds as anticipated. Though I find your behavior alarming. You’d normally have expected such an intervention. For me to ‘work my magic’, as you so often say when you expect me to clean up your messes. You’ve not been alert. Not focusing. Not thinking. You’ve been–”
“–In prison, yes. Well done. Thank you for the reminder.”

queerbaiting doesn't have any negative affect on me. bc when it's really good I love it and when I don't love it it means nothing to me. destiel meant nothing to me bc even tho baby me was a bi dean truther from day 1 I hated castiel and thought he was so deeply boring. deanbenny was it for me. johnlock meant nothing to me bc benedict cumberbatch and martin freeman. sterek meant nothing to me bc stiles is 15 at the start of the show and 18 by the end and derek is like 25. I never watched star trek but im pretty sure spock and kirk were like for real for real dating. hilson is just absolutely delightful to me and it would be nothing w/o queerbaiting

Sherlock: Don't be ridiculous, John. I solved the case twenty minutes ago. I merely wanted to evaluate whether you don't kiss me because you don't fancy men in general or whether it's me in particular.

Let me help to fix this mess you’ve made.
You’ve always cared too much. With that big heart of yours, you’ve always been prone to sentiment. You should have told them.
I’ll make them return to you. I don’t know how, but I promise I will succeed. I’ll do anything. But please, Sherly, don’t shut me out.
Yesterday I’ve read a beautiful and very angsty fic by @arwamachine with a caring Mycroft (check out her fics, they are great). This inspired me to draw my first illustration for the year - some angsty Sherlock (not based on the fic).
Let me tell you the story to this illustration: John and Rosie moved in at Baker Street, but things between John and Sherlock weren’t good. While John tried to keep Rosie out if Sherlocks way to not be an inconvenience, Sherlock didn’t want to overstep, kept his distance and loved them both secretly. Angst, angst, angst, John moves out, drugs, Sherlock adopts a puppy (probably high as a kite), Mycroft is a good brother. And a happy ending. Preferably also lots of fluffy bits throughout the story, a long fluffy ending to make up for all that angst and maybe bits of glorious smut.
Now I just need someone to write this. 😅

John: I'd like to get married on day.
Sherlock: Good. That's indeed good.
John: Why do you ask?
Sherlock: Because we're getting married next July and it's obviously much more convenient to do so when you actually want to get married.
John: Wait. Who's getting married?
Sherlock: You and I. Do keep up.
John: Sorry, but I'm sure I must have missed a significant part of this conversation. Why are we getting married?
Sherlock: Because I told my parents that you proposed to me last September. And since they insist to attend the wedding, we actually have to get married. Luckily they also offered to help with the preparations, so it's less work for us.
John: Luckily. Why did you tell them I proposed in the first place? And why didn't you tell me a word about it?
Sherlock: Mummy kept asking when we're finally getting married and it got a bit annoying. And for why I didn't tell you, I simply forgot. Apologies.
John: Right. Okay. And why did your mother kept asking this in the first place?
Sherlock: Because she thinks we're dating for some years now.
John: And that's because?
Sherlock: I told her so. She kept going on about my being single. It was annoying.
John: So you lied to your mother and told her we are dating?
Sherlock: It worked long enough. How could I anticipate that she'd insist to attend the wedding?
John: Right. How could you?
